IGCSE Computer Studies Tutoring, Beginning With Which Code You Are Entered For

Almost everyone who lands on a Computer Studies page has the same unresolved question underneath their search, whether or not they have said it out loud: is this really the qualification my child is entered for? Computer Studies is the older Cambridge computing route. Most schools moved years ago to a current Computer Science specification, and Cambridge's own material shows Computer Science taking over from the 2015 examination series onwards. So the single most valuable thing IB Gram can do in the first ten minutes is help you read the entry paperwork correctly, then match a tutor to whatever it actually says. Our IGCSE Computer Studies tutors work with students still on this route, with resit candidates, and with families caught mid-switch. Sessions run online anywhere; home visits are India-only.

Matching

How a Computer Studies Tutor Match Is Made Here

The first exchange is diagnostic paperwork rather than sales. We ask four things: the syllabus number from the entry document, the school year and country, the reason you are looking now, and whether the student is continuing on this route or being moved onto a current specification. That last question changes the tutor more than anything else, because preparing a candidate for an older paper and preparing one to cross over are different jobs with different session plans. We then suggest a small number of tutors with their real background attached — which boards and which computing syllabuses they have taught, whether they have handled a transition case before, and what they are less strong on. The trial lesson is free and is spent on the student's own material: a returned mock, a class assignment, a past question the student got stuck on. The tutor reads the working and reports what is actually going wrong. That report reaches you in writing after the session, along with a plan you can argue with. Fees are not published as a list because they move with a tutor's experience and seniority, the student's year, and how often you want to meet; the number for the specific tutor suggested is put in writing before you commit to anything. If the pairing is wrong after a session or two, say so and we will change the tutor.

Send the syllabus number, year group, country and the reason you are searching

Say whether the student is continuing on 0420/0441 or crossing to a current course

The free trial works on the student's own script, not a scripted demo lesson

A written note follows every session, including the trial

Rates are confirmed in writing beforehand; the tutor is changed if the fit is wrong

Boards and tiers

Grade 9, Grade 10 and Grade 11 on a Legacy Computing Route

The useful help changes sharply across the three years, and on a legacy route it changes in an unusual way, because the further into the course a student is, the more the question of which qualification they will finally sit needs a settled answer. In Grade 9 the job is mostly comprehension and vocabulary. Students at this stage can describe technology conversationally but not in the register an examiner expects. We work on precise terminology and on writing three sentences where they would naturally write one. This is also the year in which a school planning to migrate is most likely to do it, so it is worth asking the department directly what the Year 11 cohort will be entered for. Grade 10 is where the volume of content arrives and where a student on an older syllabus can quietly fall behind their own class, because the shared revision material circulating among their friends is often written for the current course. Tutoring here includes filtering: telling a student which of the resources they have been sent are relevant to their paper and which will mislead them. Grade 11 is examination craft. Timed archived papers, mark-scheme reading, question selection where the paper allows it, and a deliberate decision about which weak areas are worth rescuing and which are worth capping so the remaining weeks go where the marks are.

Grade 9: examiner vocabulary, register, and writing at answer length

Grade 9: ask the department what the current Year 11 cohort is entered for

Grade 10: filtering revision material so current-course resources do not mislead

Grade 11: timed archived papers, mark-scheme reading, triage of weak areas

Students arriving from CBSE, ICSE or a national board get a bridging plan first

Subjects

What 0420 and 0441 Are, and Why the Number Decides the Tutor

Two numbers sit in our catalogue for this subject. 0420 is Cambridge IGCSE Computer Studies, the original international version. 0441 is Cambridge IGCSE Computer Studies (US), prepared for Cambridge schools working to a United States calendar and context; published schemes of work for it open on the range and scope of computer applications rather than on writing programs. They are siblings, not rivals, and a tutor who has taught one can usually read the other without difficulty. What neither of them is, is interchangeable with the modern course. Command words differ. Mark schemes reward a different kind of answer. The archived question papers ask students to describe and justify where a current paper would more often ask them to construct. A tutor who has only ever taught the newer specification will teach your child beautifully for an exam they are not taking. So when you write to us, lead with the number. Everything downstream depends on it: which archived papers we practise from, which vocabulary we drill, whether we spend session time on written explanation or on preparing a student for a specification change. Where a school says Pearson Edexcel, its international route in this area is a Computer Science qualification rather than a Computer Studies one, so ask that school for the specification code in writing before booking anything.

0420 — Cambridge IGCSE Computer Studies, the international version

0441 — Cambridge IGCSE Computer Studies (US), the United States version

The code determines which archived papers a tutor practises from

Command words and mark-scheme expectations differ from the current course

Edexcel schools should be asked for their specification code in writing

Local coverage

Where Families Book This From, in India and Abroad

Inside India, enquiries for international computing subjects cluster where the international schools cluster. In Gurugram that means Golf Course Road, the DLF phases, Sushant Lok and the sectors around 43, 50 and 56. In Delhi it is mostly the south and south-west, around Vasant Vihar, Vasant Kunj and Saket. Noida contributes steadily from Sectors 44, 50 and 62 and along the Expressway. Mumbai enquiries come from Bandra, Juhu, BKC and South Mumbai; Bangalore from Indiranagar, Koramangala, HSR Layout, Whitefield and Sarjapur Road; with a regular flow from Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai as well. Home tutoring exists only in that Indian list, and only where a tutor who knows this route happens to be available. Density is honestly thin for a legacy computing syllabus, thinner than it would be for Maths or Physics, so in many of these cities the realistic answer will be online. Internationally, this route surfaces most often through long-established Cambridge schools: the Gulf, particularly Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha and Muscat; Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Bangkok; Nairobi, Lagos, Accra and Kampala; and British-curriculum schools across Europe and the UK. Outside India every one of those is online only, in your own time zone, and the tutor is normally based in India.

School ecosystem

Working With the School's Scheme, Calendar and Entry Paperwork

A tutor's job is to support the school's plan, not to run a competing one. So we ask for the department's scheme of work, the internal assessment calendar and any deadlines the student is already carrying. Where a school still teaches this route, its scheme is the authority on component structure, and we follow it rather than anything we remember from elsewhere. On this particular subject there is one extra reason to stay close to the school. The school owns the entry decision. If the department is planning to move its cohort to a current specification, that plan should shape what a tutor spends the next two terms on, and a family often hears about it later than they should. We encourage parents to ask the question plainly at the next meeting and to get the answer by email. It is not an awkward question; exams officers deal with it constantly. On assessed work, the boundary is not negotiable. Tutors coach. They do not write, complete, part-write or co-author any assignment, project, portfolio or piece of assessed work that carries a student's name to a board. They will explain a task, model a comparable example that is not the student's task, read a draft and say where it is weak. The student's submitted work has to be the student's own, and we will say so to a family that asks for more.

Drafts are read and critiqued; the finished submission stays the student's own

Modes

Online, at Home or Hybrid: What Actually Suits This Subject?

Online is the stronger default for this particular subject, and we will say so even though home tutoring is the more expensive booking. The work is largely reading questions, writing answers and marking them against a scheme, and a shared screen with an annotated paper on it does that as well as a kitchen table does, sometimes better, because the annotated file is still there next week. Online sessions run worldwide, in your own time zone, and that matters more here than on a mainstream subject. Tutors who know this legacy route are not thick on the ground in any one city. A family in Doha or Kuala Lumpur booking online can reach the right person; a family insisting on a home visit may be choosing from nobody at all. Home tutoring is offered only in India, and only in cities where a suitable tutor is currently free. It is genuinely useful for a student who will not focus alone in a room, or where the household wants a visible routine. Pretending it is available everywhere would only waste your week, so ask us about your specific city before assuming. Hybrid works well in practice: a fortnightly visit for accountability, weekly online sessions for the actual marking work, and the written note after each one either way.

Compare

One-to-One Tutoring on This Route Against the Other Options

On a legacy syllabus the comparison is different from a mainstream subject, because most of the available support in the market is built for the current Computer Science course. These are categories rather than named providers, and the differences that matter are about whether the help is aimed at the paper your child is actually entered for.

Verification

What Is Checked Before a Tutor Is Put in Front of Your Child

Subject knowledge is checked against this route specifically, because general computing competence is not the same thing. Plenty of capable teachers have never opened a Computer Studies paper in their career, and a few have never seen one that predates their own training. We ask a prospective tutor which computing syllabuses they have taught and over what years, and we ask them to talk through an archived question and the answer it was looking for. We also check something less obvious: whether the tutor can tell the difference between the two routes without being prompted. A tutor who cannot articulate how expectations differ between the older course and the current one will teach the wrong exam technique with complete confidence, and a fifteen-year-old will not catch the error. Beyond subject checks, we verify identity and qualifications, take up references where they are available, and run a trial with a real student before a tutor is offered widely. For home tutoring inside India, the verification is stricter because the tutor enters a family's home. Tutors are told plainly during onboarding what they may not do with assessed work, and a tutor who treats that as flexible does not stay on the platform. Nothing here is a guarantee about outcomes; it is a description of the filter.

A walk-through of an archived question and what its mark scheme rewarded

Ability to explain how the older and current routes differ in expectation

Identity and qualification checks, plus references where available

Is Your Child Sitting Computer Studies, or Computer Science?

Check the statement of entry, not the timetable and not the textbook cover. The document the school submits to the board carries a four-digit syllabus number, and that number settles the argument. If it reads 0420 or 0441, your child is on the older Computer Studies route. If it reads 0478 or 0984, the subject is Computer Science and this page is the wrong one to book from. We raise this first because the confusion is genuinely common and it costs families money. Parents search the words they heard at a parents' evening, or the words printed on a second-hand book, and end up buying tuition for a syllabus nobody in the room is being examined on. Teachers use "computer studies" loosely as a general description of the subject long after the qualification changed name. Older siblings sat something different. Schools that migrated keep legacy resources on the shared drive. Cambridge's published material indicates that Computer Science replaced Computer Studies from the 2015 series, and 0441 was the United States version of that same older course. What we cannot tell you from a distance is what your particular school has entered your particular child for this year. Ask the exams officer for the code in writing, and ask the board if the school's answer is unclear.

Ask the exams officer for the statement of entry, not a verbal answer

0420 or 0441 means the older Computer Studies route

0478 or 0984 means a current Computer Science specification instead

A textbook cover, a class name or a shared-drive folder proves nothing

If the school and the board disagree, trust the board's record

Where the Older Course Puts Its Weight Compared With the Current One

Teachers who taught both describe the difference in one sentence: the older course asks a student to explain computing to another person, and the newer one asks the student to build and reason it out on paper. That is a generalisation, and your school's scheme of work is the authority, but it predicts where marks go missing better than any topic list. On the Computer Studies route, a large share of the available marks came from written description and justification. A candidate had to say what a system was for, who used it, why one approach suited a particular organisation, and what the trade-offs were. Students who are fluent with a keyboard often underperform here, because the skill being tested is expository writing about technology rather than technical ability itself. They know the answer and write four words where the mark scheme wanted a reason attached to a consequence. Our tutors spend a lot of the early sessions on exactly that gap. Not on more content, but on turning a correct instinct into a paragraph that a marker can award. We do this with archived papers and their mark schemes side by side, so the student sees the shape of a two-mark answer rather than being told about it. If your school's component structure differs from anything described here, follow the school's syllabus document.

The older route rewards written description and justification heavily

Confident computer users still lose marks on written explanation

Answers are practised against archived mark schemes, not from memory

Reasons must be tied to consequences to earn the second mark

Component structure varies — confirm it against your school's syllabus copy

Resits, Late Entries and Students Who Changed School Mid-Course

A fair number of enquiries on this route are not from students sitting in a normal Year 10 classroom. They are from candidates repeating a paper, from students whose family relocated between countries halfway through the course, and from private candidates preparing outside a school entirely. That group needs something different from ordinary top-up tuition. A resit candidate usually has a marked script or at least a grade breakdown, and that is the most useful document we can be sent. It tells a tutor where the previous attempt fell over, which is rarely everywhere. Often it is one component, one style of question, or simply time management. We build the plan backwards from that evidence rather than restarting the course from its first page, which wastes a term the candidate does not have. Relocations are the other frequent case. A student who covered half a course under one board arrives at a school working to a different one, sometimes to a different qualification entirely. Here the honest work is triage: mapping what has genuinely been covered, what has to be picked up quickly, and what can be safely left. Private candidates should also confirm entry arrangements and available sessions directly with the board and with a recognised exam centre before paying for tuition, because entry availability for older syllabuses is not something any tutor can promise.

Send the previous grade breakdown or marked script if you have one

Plans are built backwards from evidence, not restarted from page one

Relocation cases start with a coverage map before any teaching happens

Private candidates must confirm entry routes with a recognised centre

No tutor can promise that a given session or code remains available

What You Should Be Able to See by the Fourth Session

We will not tell you what grade to expect, and you should be wary of anyone who does. What we will tell you is what a working arrangement looks like from the outside four weeks in, so you can judge it yourself rather than waiting for a report card. By then you should have four written notes, each naming what was worked on and what is still weak, and they should not read like copies of each other. You should be able to see at least one archived question the student could not answer in week one and can now answer to a mark scheme. You should know which code the student is entered for and have it confirmed by the school, because if that is still open after a month something has gone wrong in the communication. You should also have the tutor's rate in writing and a schedule that has actually been kept. And the student should be able to explain, unprompted, what a two-mark question is asking them to add to a one-mark answer. That last one is the best single indicator on this subject. If none of it is visible, tell us and we will change the tutor rather than ask you to give it another month.

Four written session notes that differ from each other in substance

At least one previously impossible question now answered to a mark scheme

The entry code confirmed by the school in writing

The rate in writing and a schedule that has been kept

If it is not visible, ask for a different tutor — that is a normal request

Starting This Week Without Wasting a Term

The fastest useful first message is short and carries documents. Send the syllabus number from the entry paperwork, the student's year group, the country and city you are in, and the reason you are looking now — a mock result, a resit, a relocation, or a school that has just announced it is changing specification. Attach whatever marked work exists. A photographed mock with the examiner's ticks on it is worth more to a tutor than three paragraphs of description, because it shows how the student writes under time rather than how they talk about the subject. If you have a previous grade breakdown from an earlier attempt, send that too. We reply with a small number of tutor suggestions and their real background, the rate for each in writing, and a free trial slot in your own time zone. Nothing is charged before that trial, and after it you get the tutor's written assessment whether or not you continue. If the honest answer turns out to be that your child is on a current Computer Science specification rather than this one, we will tell you that instead of selling you the wrong thing.

Send: syllabus number, year group, city and country, and what triggered the search

Attach a photographed mock or marked script if one exists

You receive tutor options with real backgrounds and rates in writing

FAQs

IGCSE tutoring FAQs

Is IGCSE Computer Studies still being taught?+

In most schools, no. Cambridge's published material shows Computer Science taking over from Computer Studies from the 2015 examination series onwards, and the great majority of international schools migrated at or around that point. A minority of settings kept older material in circulation, and resit or private candidates can still be looking at this route. Because availability of any older syllabus changes over time, the only reliable answers come from your school's exams officer and from the board itself, so please confirm with both before making decisions about tuition.

How do I find out which computing syllabus my child is entered for?+

Ask the school's exams officer for the statement of entry and read the four-digit code on it. That document is what the school submits to the board, so it settles the question in a way that a timetable, a textbook or a class name cannot. If the code reads 0420 or 0441 the subject is Computer Studies; if it reads 0478 or 0984 it is a current Computer Science specification. Request it by email rather than in conversation, so you have the answer in writing and can send it to a tutor.

What is the difference between 0420 and 0441?+

They are two versions of the same older Cambridge Computer Studies course. 0420 is the international version and 0441 is the United States version, prepared for Cambridge schools working in a US context and calendar. Published schemes of work for 0441 open on the range and scope of computer applications rather than on programming. A tutor comfortable with one can usually read the other, but the papers and the school's own scheme of work should still be checked, because component detail can differ and your school's documents are the authority.

My son's school says Computer Studies but the book says Computer Science. Which is right?+

The entry paperwork is right, and everything else is a label. Teachers commonly use the phrase computer studies as a general description of the subject long after the qualification itself was renamed, and departments often keep older books and shared-drive folders in use for years. Ask for the statement of entry, note the four-digit code, and treat that as the answer. If the school's reply and the board's record appear to disagree, ask the school to check with the board directly rather than guessing between them.

Can you help a student who is being moved from Computer Studies to Computer Science?+

Yes, and it is one of the more common reasons families contact us on this page. The work starts with a coverage map: what has genuinely been taught so far, what the new specification expects that has not been touched, and what can safely be left alone. From there the gaps are taught in priority order rather than by restarting the course. Send the school's confirmation of the change and the new specification code, because the plan is only as good as the accuracy of that starting information.

Do you tutor resit candidates who have already left school?+

Yes. Resit and private candidates are a meaningful share of enquiries on this route, and the plan for them looks different from ordinary school-year tuition. The most useful thing to send is the previous grade breakdown or a marked script, because it usually shows that one component or one question style caused most of the damage rather than the whole course. Please confirm entry arrangements and available examination sessions with a recognised exam centre and the board yourself, as no tutor can promise that a given route remains open.

How much does an IGCSE Computer Studies tutor cost?+

There is no published price list, and the number varies for honest reasons. It moves with the tutor's experience and seniority, the student's year group, whether the work is resit preparation or a specification transition, and how often you meet. Once a specific tutor is suggested, that tutor's rate is put in writing before you book anything, so you are comparing a real figure rather than a bracket. Ask for it upfront. Any tutor unwilling to state a rate plainly before a first session is worth questioning.

Is tutoring available at home, or only online?+

Online is available worldwide and runs in your own time zone. Home tutoring is offered only inside India, and only in cities where a tutor who knows this route is currently free, which on a legacy computing syllabus is a real constraint rather than a formality. Gurugram, South Delhi, Noida, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai are where in-person availability is most likely. Ask about your specific city before you assume, because we would rather tell you no than arrange a poor substitute.

Why do strong computer users still lose marks on this syllabus?+

Because a large share of the marks come from written explanation rather than technical ability. A student who is genuinely capable with technology will often answer correctly in four words where the mark scheme wanted a reason attached to a consequence, and the second mark simply does not get awarded. The fix is not more content. It is practising against archived mark schemes until the student can see the shape of a full answer, which is what most of the early sessions on this route are spent doing.

Will a tutor help with an assignment or project that gets submitted?+

A tutor will explain the task, work through a comparable example that is not the student's own task, read a draft and tell the student where it is weak or thin. A tutor will not write it, finish it, part-write it or co-author it. Work that carries a student's name to an examination board has to be the student's own, and we say that plainly to families who ask for more, because a piece of work produced by someone else puts the candidate at risk, not the tutor.

Do you cover Pearson Edexcel as well as Cambridge for computing?+

IB Gram works across Cambridge IGCSE and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE generally. On this subject specifically, Edexcel's current international route in this area is a Computer Science qualification rather than a Computer Studies one, so if your school names Edexcel you should ask it for the specification code in writing. Send us that code and we will tell you honestly whether this page or the Computer Science page is the right starting point for your child, or whether neither of them is.

How quickly can sessions start?+

Usually within a few days for online tuition, because the tutor pool is not limited by geography. Home tutoring in India takes longer and sometimes cannot be arranged at all on this route, since it depends on a suitably experienced tutor being free in your particular city. Send the syllabus code, year group, city and time zone in your first message and you will normally have tutor suggestions with rates attached shortly afterwards, followed by a free trial lesson scheduled at a time that suits your household.

What happens in the free trial lesson?+

The trial is worked on the student's own material rather than a rehearsed demonstration. The tutor takes a returned mock, a class assignment or an archived question the student could not finish, and watches how the student reads it and writes the answer. Afterwards you receive a written assessment of what is going wrong and what the first few weeks would target. That note is yours whether or not you continue, and nothing is charged for the trial itself.

Can we change tutors if it is not working?+

Yes, and it is treated as a normal request rather than a complaint. Fit matters more on a subject like this than families expect, because a tutor who is excellent with a Grade 9 student building vocabulary may not be the right person for a resit candidate six weeks from a session. Tell us what is not working and we will suggest an alternative. You do not need to persist out of politeness, and you do not need to justify the request at length.

Is IB Gram connected to Cambridge International or Pearson?+

No. IB Gram is an independent tutoring platform and is not affiliated with Cambridge International, Pearson Edexcel, Oxford AQA or the IB, and it does not speak for any of them. What we can do is match a student with a tutor who has taught the relevant syllabus. Anything to do with entries, codes, available examination sessions or results comes from your school and the board, and we will always point you back to them on those questions rather than guess.

How will I know it is working?+

By the written note after every session and by what the student can do that they could not do before. Four weeks in you should have four notes that differ from one another in substance, at least one archived question the student can now answer to a mark scheme, and confirmation from the school of the code your child is entered for. We do not promise grades and will not pretend to predict one. If none of that is visible, ask for a different tutor.

Ready to plan IGCSE support?

If you are not certain whether your child sits Computer Studies 0420 or 0441 or a current Computer Science specification, start there, because everything else follows from it. Send the syllabus number from the entry paperwork, the year group, your city and time zone, and whatever marked work exists. You will get tutor suggestions with real backgrounds, each rate in writing, and a free trial lesson in your own time zone, with a written note afterwards either way. Email ibgram24@gmail.com or message +91 7439 368 115 on WhatsApp, and say plainly if the reason is a resit or a school changing specification.
