IGCSE Business Studies Tutoring Built Around the Case Study
The complaint that brings most parents here is oddly consistent. The student revises properly, can list the features of a partnership, can draw a break-even chart, and still comes back from a mock somewhere in the low fifties. That is not usually a knowledge problem. In Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies 0450, recall is only one of four assessment objectives, and the other three ask a candidate to do something with what they know inside a company invented for that paper. IB Gram matches Grade 9 to Grade 11 students with an IGCSE Business Studies tutor who marks against the real criteria and teaches the moves that earn application and judgement marks. Sessions run online worldwide; home tutoring is India-only and depends on local availability.
How a Business Studies Tutor Gets Matched to Your Child
Five details decide which tutor is suggested, and "we need a Business tutor" is not one of them. We ask which board and code the school enters students for, which grade the student is in, whether the weaker paper is the short-answer and data-response one or the longer case-study one, what specifically prompted the message, and whether English is the student's first language. That last one matters more in this subject than families expect, because every mark above simple recall is earned in written sentences. Two or three tutors are then put forward with a plain description of what they have actually taught: which boards, how many cohorts, whether they have worked with second-language writers, how comfortable they are with the quantitative sections. You speak to them before committing, and the first lesson is free. That first session is diagnostic. The student attempts a real question from a past case study under something close to exam timing, and the tutor marks it against the published criteria in front of them, saying where each mark was earned and where one was available and missed. That is far more useful than a topic test, because it shows whether the problem is content, application, structure or speed. A written note follows every session, naming what was practised and what to do before the next one. Fees depend on the tutor's experience and tier, the grade and how often you meet, and are confirmed in writing before any booking. If the match is wrong, we change the tutor.

Grade 9, Grade 10 and Grade 11 Need Different Business Help
The course usually runs over two years, and useful tutoring looks different at each stage. In Grade 9 the priority is vocabulary and the shape of a business: forms of ownership from sole trader through partnership, private and public limited company and franchise, who the stakeholders are and where their interests collide, what an objective is and how a small firm's differs from a multinational's. Students also need to become comfortable reading a simple table of figures without panic, because stimulus material appears from the first paper onwards. Grade 10 is the heavy content year. The marketing mix, market research and segmentation, motivation from Taylor through Maslow to Herzberg, recruitment and selection, the different training routes, break-even analysis, the distinction between cash flow and profit, and methods of business growth all arrive within a few months of each other. This is where students begin to confuse terms that look similar, and where a tutor's job is largely to keep the definitions clean and the calculations accurate. Grade 11 is almost entirely examination craft. The content is mostly there; the marks are going to undeveloped analysis, judgement-free conclusions, misread command words, ignored appendices and running out of time on the last question. Sessions at this stage should be dominated by timed answers, marked and returned with the criteria visible. A tutor who is still delivering topic lectures in the final term is spending your money in the wrong place.
Grade 9: ownership forms, stakeholders, objectives, reading a table of data
Grade 10: marketing mix, motivation theory, recruitment, break-even, cash flow
Grade 11: timed case-study answers, marked and returned against the criteria
Students arriving from CBSE, ICSE or a national curriculum get a short bridging plan
Option-choice conversations in Grade 9 where Business competes with Economics
The Codes and Papers Inside IGCSE Business Studies
Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies is syllabus 0450, with 0986 as the version reported on the 9 to 1 grade scale. The taught content is the same across the two; the difference is how the result is expressed, and which one a school enters for is a school decision. A detail worth knowing early: there is no Core and Extended split here. Every candidate sits the same two papers, so there is no tier conversation to have and no lower entry route to fall back on. Assessment comes in two halves of equal weight. One paper uses short-answer and data-response questions built on shorter pieces of stimulus drawn from across the whole syllabus. The other is built on a single case study, supplied as a separate insert with appendices holding tables, charts and extracts, and its questions demand longer, more developed reasoning and firmer judgements. Pearson Edexcel's International GCSE Business also runs two externally assessed papers of equal weight, but it divides the content thematically, starting with small business contexts and moving on to a growing business. Boards revise syllabuses on a cycle, so confirm the current version with your school. The content areas themselves are broadly familiar across both routes: business activity and ownership, marketing, operations and production, people in business, finance and accounts, and the external environment the firm trades in. Naming the code in your first message saves the first two sessions, because the sequence and the question style differ.
0450 — Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies, reported on the A* to G scale
0986 — the same content reported on the 9 to 1 scale; a school-level choice
No Core or Extended tiers: every candidate takes the same papers
One data-response paper and one case-study paper, equally weighted
Edexcel International GCSE Business splits content thematically across its two papers
Content areas: activity and ownership, marketing, operations, people, finance, external environment
Where IGCSE Business Studies Tutoring Reaches
Most of our Business Studies teaching happens online, across time zones, which is what makes code-specific matching possible in the first place. A family in Doha wanting a tutor who has actually marked Edexcel case-study answers is not restricted to whoever teaches nearby. Business is a heavily chosen option in schools across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha and Muscat, in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, in Hong Kong and Bangkok, in Nairobi, Lagos and Accra, and in British and European international schools where students are aiming at commerce or management pathways afterwards. Inside India, in-person tutoring is possible in some cities and not others, and it moves as tutors' schedules fill. Demand is thickest in Gurugram around Sushant Lok, Sectors 43, 50 and 56 and the DLF phases off Golf Course Road; in South and South-West Delhi near Vasant Kunj, Vasant Vihar and Saket; in Noida across Sectors 44, 50 and 62 and along the Expressway; and around the international-school belts of Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai. In Mumbai that means Bandra, Juhu, BKC and the southern neighbourhoods; in Bangalore, Whitefield, Sarjapur, HSR, Indiranagar and Koramangala. Outside India there is no in-person option at all, and no arrangement with any local partner. Say where you are in the first message and you will get a straight answer about whether home tuition is currently possible there, rather than a fortnight of waiting.

Working With the School's Scheme Rather Than Around It
Schools sequence this subject very differently. One department opens with business activity and ownership and saves finance for the second year; another starts with marketing because it engages a Grade 9 class faster. Some run their own case-study booklets written in-house; some drill the board's past inserts from the start. A tutor who ignores all of that and teaches their own preferred order leaves the student carrying two parallel courses. So sessions are built from what the department is actually doing: the current unit, the last marked assessment with the teacher's comments on it, the school's worksheets, and the internal examination timetable. Where a teacher's marking is already specific and useful, the tutor reinforces it. Where feedback has been limited to a grade and a tick, the tutor supplies the detail that was missing, in writing, so nothing contradicts the classroom quietly. On assessed work, the line is not negotiable. Tutors coach. They do not write, redraft, complete or co-author assignments, projects, mock answers submitted for marks, or anything else a school treats as the student's own work. If a student asks, the tutor will say no and will explain why the request cannot be met. What a tutor will do is take an old question, sit beside the student while they plan it, and mark the result honestly. That is the version that still works in the examination hall, where nobody is available to help.
Sessions follow the department's sequence, its booklets and its assessment calendar
The last marked script and the teacher's comments are the best starting material
Tutors never write, redraft or co-author anything submitted for marks
Where school feedback was only a grade, the tutor supplies the missing detail in writing
Requests to complete assessed work are declined and explained, not quietly ignored
Online, Home or Hybrid for a Written Subject Like This
Business Studies is unusual in that the online version is arguably the stronger one. There is no laboratory, no instrument and no performance to supervise. What the subject needs is a shared screen with the case insert open, the tutor highlighting the sentence the student should have quoted, and the mark scheme visible beside the answer so the student can see the gap themselves rather than being told about it. Marked work is returned as a file the family keeps, which is harder to do with pencil on paper. Online sessions are available worldwide and are scheduled in your own time zone. Home tutoring exists only in India, and only in cities where a tutor currently has in-person slots. It suits students who write better on paper than on a keyboard, who need a person physically present to stay in the chair for a full timed answer, or who are young enough that a screen becomes a negotiation every session. It is not available everywhere, and we would rather say that than take a booking we cannot honour. A hybrid pattern works well in the final year for families in cities where both are possible: weekly online sessions for marked writing practice, with in-person blocks in the fortnight before mocks when timed papers and immediate feedback matter most. Whichever mode you choose, the written note after each session is the same.
Online worldwide, in your own time zone, with the insert and criteria on screen
Marked answers returned as files, so progress is visible over months
Home tutoring inside India only, and only where a tutor has current availability
No branch, centre or campus exists to visit anywhere
Hybrid: weekly online writing practice plus in-person blocks before mock season
One-to-One Business Tutoring Against the Alternatives
Business Studies marks are won in written answers that are marked, returned and rewritten. That is the dimension worth comparing, so this table looks at what each option can realistically do with a student's timed case-study response rather than at cost alone.
| What matters | IB Gram one-to-one | Coaching-centre batch | Recorded video course | School lessons alone |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Marked timed answers per week | One or two, marked against the published criteria and rewritten | Usually one common answer discussed with the whole batch | None; questions are modelled on screen but nothing of the student's is read | Limited by class size and the department's marking load |
| Feedback on application to the case | Paragraph by paragraph, showing the evidence that was available and skipped | Generic advice to use the case more, without the student's own script | A worked exemplar only; the student's own habit is never diagnosed | Depends on the teacher's time; often a grade and a short comment |
| Command-word coaching | Trained deliberately, with over-writing on low-mark items corrected | Covered as a class topic, rarely tracked per student | Explained once in a lesson on examination technique | Taught, but hard to police across thirty scripts |
| Break-even and cash-flow work | Worked live, with the student's arithmetic and labels checked as they go | Demonstrated at the board; errors surface later in a test | Watchable but not checkable | Covered in the scheme, with practice set as homework |
| Turnaround on a long marked answer | Within the session or before the next one, with a written note | Whenever the batch reaches that topic again | Not applicable | Typically a week or more in mock season |
| Pace and scheduling | Set by this student; online sessions run in your own time zone | Fixed timetable for the group | Entirely self-directed, which suits very few teenagers | Set by the department calendar |
What Is Checked Before a Business Tutor Is Put Forward
Subject knowledge is the easy part of this subject and the least predictive of results, so it is not what the checks concentrate on. We look first at whether the tutor has taught the specific route the family needs and can describe its question style without being prompted. Someone who has only ever taught Cambridge inserts will need a term to become useful on Edexcel's thematic papers, and we would rather place a tutor who already knows them. Then we test marking. A prospective tutor is given a genuine mid-quality student answer and asked to mark it against the published criteria and explain the decision. It is remarkably revealing. Plenty of well-qualified people award analysis marks for a list, or evaluation marks for a paragraph that never reaches a decision, and a tutor who cannot see the difference cannot teach a student to close it. We also check the quantitative corners that some Business tutors avoid: break-even calculations and the chart that goes with them, reading and completing a cash-flow forecast, and the difference between a cash shortage and a loss. And we check how the tutor works with a student writing in English as an additional language, since the sentence patterns that carry a judgement can be taught directly. References are taken up, identity is confirmed, and every tutor accepts the coaching-only rule on assessed work before being matched.
Confirmed experience with the specific board and paper style, not Business in general
A live marking exercise against published criteria, with the reasoning explained
Can distinguish a listed answer from a developed chain, and reward accordingly
Comfortable with break-even, cash-flow forecasts and the profit-versus-cash distinction
Experience teaching written judgement to second-language writers
Identity and references verified; the no-ghostwriting rule accepted in advance
Why Families Start Looking for an IGCSE Business Studies Tutor
Very few of the families who write to us are worried about revision hours. The student has usually done the reading. They can define a franchise, distinguish a private limited company from a public one, and explain what Herzberg meant by hygiene factors. What comes back marked is something else: paragraphs of accurate theory with no visible connection to the firm described in the examination insert, and a final question that lists three benefits, three drawbacks, and then stops without deciding anything. A marker reading that answer is not being harsh. They are following criteria that reward what a candidate does with the material, and a beautifully written description of motivation theory that never names the delivery company in the case, never quotes its staff turnover figure and never reaches a decision has simply not met most of them. Parents find this genuinely confusing, because in many other subjects, knowing the content is most of the battle. So the tutoring that helps is not another pass through the syllabus. It is repeated, marked practice on the specific habits the paper pays for: quoting the case, building a consequence chain rather than a list, and finishing with a judgement the student is willing to defend. Families reach us from international schools across Indian cities and from Gulf, Southeast Asian, African and British schools where Business sits in a popular option block.
Knowing the content and scoring well are two different skills in this subject
Most lost marks are application and judgement marks, not recall marks
Practice is marked against real criteria, not given a vague verbal verdict

What Does Each Command Word Actually Pay?
Every question opens with an instruction, and that instruction is a price list. Read it wrongly and the student either underwrites and forfeits marks or overwrites and loses the minutes they needed later. "Identify" and "state" want a named item and nothing more; a candidate who writes four sentences there has given away time for no reward. "Define" wants the meaning in the technical sense the syllabus uses, not a colloquial one. "Outline" wants the point plus a short clarifying clause. "Explain" is where the pattern changes. It wants a point and then a reason chained to it, usually a sentence beginning with "because" or "which means". "Analyse" wants that chain taken further: a cause, its effect on this firm, and the effect of that effect, so the examiner can follow the reasoning to a business consequence such as unit cost, cash position or staff retention. Four separate one-line points typically score less than two properly developed chains, which is counter-intuitive to students who have been taught to write more. "Evaluate", "justify", "recommend" and "do you think" all demand a decision. Weighing is not optional and neither is choosing. The strongest answers also say what the judgement depends on — the firm's cash position, how long it can wait for a return, how loyal its customers are. Mark allocations shift between series and boards, so treat the number beside the question as the real instruction about length.
Identify and state: name it, stop, move on — no development is being paid for
Explain: point plus a linked reason, using "because" or "which means"
Analyse: a chain running through to a business consequence for this firm
Evaluate and justify: weigh, decide, and say what the decision depends on
The mark figure beside the question tells you how much writing is being bought
Why Does a Student Who Knows the Theory Still Lose Case-Study Marks?
Because describing is not applying, and the criteria pay for applying. The insert hands the candidate a business with a name, a sector, a size, a set of problems and a folder of appendices. Everything in that insert is there to be used. An answer about promotion that could have been written before the paper was opened, with no mention of the firm's product, its customers or the figure sitting in Appendix 2, is a general essay dressed as a response. The fix is mechanical and it is teachable. Every analytical paragraph should contain at least one piece of evidence lifted from the material: a number, a quoted phrase, a fact about the firm's ownership or market. "Cash flow could become a problem" earns very little. "The forecast in the appendix shows a negative net cash flow in two consecutive months while the owner is also committed to new equipment" is doing the work, because the reasoning is now anchored to this company and nobody else's. The second habit is the conclusion. A list of advantages followed by a list of drawbacks, ending in silence, leaves the judgement marks unclaimed. A supported judgement names the option chosen, says why the strongest counter-argument does not outweigh it, and states the condition under which the answer would change. Students resist this because it feels like committing to something they cannot be certain of. The paper is asking for a defended opinion, not a correct one.
Quote or cite something from the insert in every analytical paragraph
Replace "it might affect cash flow" with the actual figure from the appendix
Advantages then disadvantages then nothing is the commonest way to lose marks
A judgement names a choice, answers the counter-argument and states its condition
Underlining the insert before writing takes two minutes and changes the marks
What You Should Be Able to See by the Fourth Week
Nobody can promise you a grade, and anyone who does is telling you something they cannot know. What you can reasonably expect after a month is evidence that the specific weaknesses are being worked on, and it should be visible without asking for a progress meeting. Look at the student's written answers rather than at their confidence. By week four, an analytical paragraph should contain something taken from the case material — a figure, a phrase, a fact about the firm — instead of general theory. Concluding paragraphs should begin with a decision rather than drifting towards one. The insert itself should come back marked up, with the appendices annotated, because a clean insert after a timed answer usually means the material was never really used. Timing should have improved on the shorter questions, which is normally where minutes are being wasted on command words that never asked for a paragraph. The written notes are the other evidence. Each should name what was practised, what the marked answer scored and why, and what the student is to do before the next session. Four of those notes read together tell you whether the work is targeted or merely regular. If the pattern is not there by week four, say so. Changing the tutor early costs nothing but a conversation, and it is a far better outcome than discovering in February that the term went nowhere.
Answers that quote the case material instead of reciting textbook theory
Conclusions that open with a decision rather than trailing off
A marked-up insert with annotated appendices after every timed attempt
Faster, shorter answers on the low-mark command words
Four written notes that name the practice, the score and the next task
Starting This Week With an IGCSE Business Studies Tutor
Getting started is a short message rather than a form. Write to ibgram24@gmail.com or send a WhatsApp to +91 7439 368 115 with five things, and a shortlist usually comes back the same day or the next. Say the board and code — Cambridge 0450 or 0986, or Edexcel International GCSE Business. Say the grade and when the student is entered for the examination session. Say which paper is causing the trouble, and if you are not sure, say that instead of guessing; the trial lesson will establish it. Say what the last marked assessment scored and, if you have it, attach a photograph of a marked answer, because one real script is worth more than any description of the problem. And say where you are, so the honest answer about home tutoring comes immediately rather than after a week. The trial lesson is free and involves real marking, not a sales conversation. Fees follow in writing before anything is confirmed, and they vary with the tutor's experience and tier, the grade and how often you meet. IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with Cambridge International, Pearson Edexcel or any school. If the tutor is not right after a session or two, tell us and we will change them.

IGCSE tutoring FAQs
Do I need to know the syllabus code before asking for a tutor?+
It helps a great deal, but it is not a barrier. Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies is 0450, with 0986 as the version graded on the 9 to 1 scale, and Pearson Edexcel runs its own International GCSE Business. If you do not know which your school uses, look at the top of a recent examination paper or ask the class teacher, since the code is usually printed there. If you still cannot find it, send whatever you have and the tutor will identify the route from a past paper in the first lesson.
My child revises hard but scores badly on the case-study paper. Why?+
Almost always because the answers describe theory instead of applying it to the business in the insert. The criteria reward using the case material, reasoning through to a consequence for that particular firm, and reaching a judgement. A paragraph that could have been written before the paper was opened earns knowledge credit and little else. The habit is fixable within a few weeks of marked practice: quote something from the appendices in every analytical paragraph, and end evaluative questions with a decision rather than a balanced list.
Does Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies have Core and Extended tiers?+
No. Unlike several other Cambridge IGCSE subjects, Business Studies has no tiered entry. Every candidate sits the same papers, so there is no lower route to fall back on and no tier decision for the school to make in Grade 10. That matters for planning, because a student who is struggling cannot be moved to an easier entry; the only way forward is improving the answers themselves. It also means a tutor's time is best spent on examination technique rather than on tier strategy.
What is the difference between analysis and evaluation in this subject?+
Analysis is reasoning; evaluation is deciding. An analytical paragraph takes a cause, follows it to an effect on the firm, and follows that effect to a business consequence such as unit cost, cash position or staff turnover. Evaluation weighs competing arguments and then commits to one, saying why the strongest objection does not overturn it and what would have to change for the answer to change. Students often produce excellent analysis and stop just short of the judgement, which leaves the highest-value marks on the table.
How do tutors actually teach a student to use the case material?+
By marking their own answers in front of them. The tutor puts the insert and the student's response side by side and points to the specific figure, quotation or fact that was available in the appendices and went unused, then asks the student to rewrite one paragraph with that evidence included. Repeated over several weeks, this builds a reflex: read the insert, underline the usable material, plan, then write. Most students see the difference in their own marked scripts before they believe the advice.
Is there coursework in IGCSE Business Studies?+
The Cambridge route is assessed by written examination rather than by a coursework portfolio, so there is no folder to build over the year. Schools do, however, set their own assignments, projects and internal assessments that count towards reports and predicted grades. Our position on all of those is the same: tutors coach, and they never write, redraft or co-author anything a student submits for marks. A tutor will help plan and will mark a practice attempt honestly, which is the version that survives the examination hall.
Can tutors help with break-even, cash flow and the numerical sections?+
Yes, and those sections are often the quickest source of recovered marks. Tutors work through break-even calculations and the chart that accompanies them, completing and interpreting a cash-flow forecast, and the distinction between a business that is profitable and one that has run out of cash. Students frequently lose marks here to unlabelled axes, missed units or an answer that is arithmetically right but never interpreted. Practice is done live so errors are caught as they happen rather than in the next test.
Do you cover Edexcel International GCSE Business as well as Cambridge?+
Yes. Both boards are supported, and we match a tutor who has taught the specific route rather than asking a Cambridge specialist to improvise. The Edexcel qualification organises its content thematically across two externally assessed papers, beginning with small business contexts, while the Cambridge papers draw on the whole syllabus. The question styles and the way stimulus material is presented differ enough to matter. Tell us the board in your first message and the shortlist will reflect it.
Is home tutoring available in my city?+
Home tutoring is offered only within India, and only where a tutor currently has in-person slots free, so the honest answer depends on your city and on the month you ask. Availability is usually best in Gurugram, South and South-West Delhi, Noida, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai, and it changes as schedules fill. Outside India there is no in-person option at all. Send your locality and you will get a direct yes or no rather than a vague maybe.
How does an online Business Studies session actually run?+
The case insert or data-response extract is shared on screen alongside the student's own written answer and the marking criteria. The tutor annotates as they go, highlighting the evidence that should have been quoted and the point where a chain of reasoning stopped early. Students write during the session, often against the clock, and the marked file is returned afterwards with a written note. Sessions are scheduled in your household's own time zone, wherever in the world you are.
How much does an IGCSE Business Studies tutor cost?+
There is no published price list, because a single figure would be misleading. Fees depend on the tutor's experience and tier, the grade the student is in, whether sessions are online or in person, and how frequently you meet. What is fixed is the process: you get the rate in writing before anything is booked, and the trial lesson is free, so you can judge the marking quality before money is discussed. Ask for the quote in your first message and it will come back in writing.
Can you help a student who is strong at the content but weak at written English?+
Yes, and this is one of the more common requests from families where English is an additional language. The sentence patterns that carry marks in this subject are surprisingly few and can be taught directly: linking a point to a consequence, introducing evidence from the case, and phrasing a judgement with its condition attached. Tutors experienced with second-language writers drill those patterns rather than asking a student to write more fluently in general. Say so when you enquire and the shortlist will reflect it.
How many sessions a week does a Grade 11 student usually need?+
Most Grade 11 students work well on one or two sessions a week, and the shape matters more than the count. In the final months, a productive rhythm is one timed answer written and marked each week, with the rewrite done independently and checked at the start of the next session. More frequent sessions help when there is significant content still missing, but three lectures a week with no marked writing will not move a case-study mark. The tutor will tell you plainly which situation you are in.
Will a tutor write or improve my child's assignment before submission?+
No. Tutors coach and never produce assessed work, which includes writing, redrafting, editing or co-authoring anything submitted to a school for marks. If a student asks, the tutor will decline and explain why. What a tutor will do is take a comparable past question, plan it alongside the student, mark the finished attempt against real criteria and show precisely where marks were lost. That leaves the student able to do the same thing unaided, which is the only version that helps in the examination.
Can we start only a few weeks before the examination session?+
Yes, and short late-stage blocks are common, but expectations should be realistic. With a few weeks available the sensible plan is triage: timed practice on the paper that is weakest, command-word discipline on the low-mark questions where time is being wasted, and drilling the habit of quoting the case. Rebuilding a year of missing content in that window is not possible, and a tutor who claims otherwise is not being straight with you. We will say what is achievable before you book.
Is IB Gram connected to Cambridge International or Pearson Edexcel?+
No. IB Gram is an independent tutoring platform and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or partnered with Cambridge International, Pearson Edexcel, Oxford AQA, the IB or any school. Tutors teach towards those syllabuses using publicly available specifications, past papers and published marking criteria, which is what any tutor anywhere does. We have no access to unreleased papers and no influence over grading. Anyone claiming a special relationship with a board is worth treating with suspicion.
Ready to plan IGCSE support?
If the pattern in your house is a student who knows the content and still comes back from a case-study paper disappointed, that is a fixable problem and a specific one. Send an email to ibgram24@gmail.com or a WhatsApp message to +91 7439 368 115 with the board and code, the grade, the examination session, which paper is weaker and where you are. A shortlist of tutors with their real teaching background follows, along with a free trial lesson that involves genuine marking rather than a sales pitch. Fees are confirmed in writing before anything is booked, and if the tutor is not the right fit, we change them.
