IGCSE Accounting Tutoring, From First Ledger Entry to Final Accounts

Families searching for IGCSE Accounting tutors almost never describe the problem as accounting. They describe a mark. A trial balance that refused to balance. An eight-mark control account question that scored two. A statement of financial position written in an order the examiner would not accept. Accounting at this level is unusually mechanical, and that is genuinely good news, because mechanical subjects can be drilled into reliability in a way that essay subjects cannot. It is also unforgiving, since one wrong figure entered early travels through everything after it. IB Gram matches Grade 9 to Grade 11 students to a tutor who has already taught Cambridge 0452 or 0985, or the Edexcel route, online worldwide or at home in selected Indian cities.

Matching

How a Match Is Made, and What You Need to Tell Us First

Four details decide which tutor is suggested. The syllabus code the school teaches. The school year, since Grade 9 bookkeeping work and Grade 11 interpretation work are separate jobs. Whether the student has sat any full past paper yet. And the specific topic or question that triggered the search. A message saying only that a student needs accounting help costs two more exchanges to reach the same place, and when a school assessment is a fortnight away those exchanges are expensive. Two or three tutors then come back with their real history: which boards they have taught, whether they have marked structured written papers, how they handle a student who reverses debits and credits under pressure. The trial lesson is a diagnostic rather than a lecture. The tutor puts a genuine past-paper question in front of the student, watches them work, and notes precisely where the first wrong entry appeared and whether everything after it was consistent with that error. That diagnosis is written up and sent to the parent, which is the point at which most families realise the issue is narrower than they feared. Fees vary with the tutor's seniority, the year group and how often you meet, and the figure for a specific tutor is confirmed in writing before any booking happens. If the pairing is wrong, say so and we move the student to someone else.

Grade 9, Grade 10 and Grade 11 Accounting Need Different Work

In Grade 9 the whole return comes from mechanics. Double entry has to become automatic, to the point where a student writes the second half of an entry without pausing to reason it out. Time spent here on the cash book, the petty cash imprest system, the journals and the ledgers looks slow and pays for the rest of the course. A student who is still deciding debit or credit by argument in Grade 9 will run out of time in Grade 11 on a question that was never about direction at all. Grade 10 is where the course stops being tidy. Control accounts, suspense accounts, bank reconciliation statements and the end-of-period adjustments all arrive, and each one requires holding two views of the same data at once. This is the year most students report that class made sense and the homework did not, because the homework asks them to choose a treatment rather than follow one. Tutoring at this stage works best on mixed exercises where the student has to identify what kind of problem it is before touching a pen. Grade 11 is examination craft plus interpretation. Full papers under time, marked against the published mark scheme, with every lost mark classified: not known, wrong direction, format, slip, or ran out of time. Alongside that, the ratio and stakeholder questions get proper attention, because they are the part students most often leave until the fortnight before the series.

Grade 9: double entry to the point of reflex, cash book, journals, imprest system

Grade 10: control accounts, suspense accounts, reconciliation, adjustments

Grade 11: timed full papers, mark-scheme marking, ratios and stakeholder comment

Students joining from CBSE, ICSE or a national board get a vocabulary bridge first

Late joiners are triaged: foundations first, presentation second, breadth last

Subjects

What Does Cambridge IGCSE Accounting 0452 Actually Assess?

It assesses one skill applied repeatedly: recording a transaction correctly and then reporting its effect. Cambridge IGCSE Accounting 0452 and its 9-1 graded equivalent 0985 share the same content. There is no Core or Extended split and no coursework component, which makes this one of the cleaner subjects to plan for. Candidates sit two compulsory written papers: a multiple-choice paper and a longer structured paper built from several multi-part questions, with the structured paper carrying the larger share of the marks. Timings and mark totals have been revised between syllabus cycles, so confirm the current figures with your school or on the board's own syllabus document rather than trusting an old past paper cover. The content runs in a chain. The accounting equation and double entry come first, then books of prime entry and the cash book, then the ledgers and the trial balance. On top of that sit the error corrections a trial balance cannot reveal, suspense accounts, control accounts and bank reconciliation. Then the adjustments: depreciation by straight line and reducing balance, accruals and prepayments, irrecoverable debts. Then final accounts for sole traders, partnerships, limited companies, clubs and manufacturers, plus incomplete records. Ratio analysis and interpretation close the course. Pearson Edexcel splits its International GCSE Accounting differently, with an introductory bookkeeping paper and a separate financial statements paper. Naming your board first prevents a mismatched teaching order.

0452 and 0985 share content; 0985 is the 9-1 graded version of the same course

Chain of content: equation, double entry, prime entry, ledgers, trial balance

Adjustments: depreciation, accruals, prepayments, irrecoverable debts, provisions

Where IGCSE Accounting Tutors Work, in India and Overseas

Most sessions happen online, worldwide, scheduled in your own time zone rather than ours. That is what lets a family in Doha or Kuala Lumpur reach a tutor who has taught 0452 specifically, instead of settling for the nearest available commerce teacher. Outside India, online is the only mode we offer, and we say so before you ask. Demand for this subject overseas is concentrated where South Asian and expatriate school communities are large. Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Doha and Muscat account for a steady share, often from families whose children intend to read commerce or finance later. Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong and Bangkok follow, then Nairobi, Lagos and Accra, where British curriculum schools have long taught bookkeeping seriously. British and European families usually arrive through the Edexcel route instead. Inside India, home tutoring is sometimes possible and depends entirely on who is taking in-person students near you. It is densest in Bangalore around Indiranagar, Koramangala, HSR Layout, Whitefield and the Sarjapur corridor, in Mumbai across Bandra, Juhu, BKC and South Mumbai, and in Hyderabad and Pune. Gurugram, Noida and South Delhi have coverage too. There is no centre, branch or office to visit anywhere, and if nothing is free near you we will tell you plainly rather than keeping you on a list.

School ecosystem

Fitting Around the School's Accounting Scheme and Calendar

Schools teach this subject in different orders and with different house rules about presentation. Some insist on folio columns from the first week; others drop them. Some introduce the three-column cash book early, others hold it back until after the ledgers are secure. Some mark strictly to the board's layout conventions from the start, and some accept looser work until the mock. A tutor who teaches a second style over the top of the first leaves a student with two half-habits and worse marks than before. So a tutor begins from the student's own file: the current unit, the last marked assessment, the teacher's written comments and the worksheets the school actually uses. Where the school's convention is defensible, the tutor drills the school's version. Where it genuinely conflicts with how the board marks, the tutor explains the difference to the student and writes it down for the parent, so nobody is left guessing why the tutoring diverged. Session plans also follow the school calendar. Internal assessment weeks, the mock timetable and the school's own deadline for coursework in other subjects all compete for a Grade 11 student's evenings, and a sensible plan works around them. One line that never moves: tutors coach. They do not complete homework, prepare assignments or produce any work that will be submitted for assessment, and a tutor asked to do so will decline and tell the parent.

Reinforce the school's presentation conventions where they match the board

Modes

Should Accounting Sessions Happen Online or at Home?

For this subject, online is the stronger default, and that is not a polite way of saying it is the only option. Accounting teaching is watching a ledger take shape entry by entry and stopping the student at the exact line where the direction went wrong. A shared screen, a document camera over the student's own ruled page, or a tablet the tutor can annotate does that at least as well as sitting alongside, and it has one clear advantage: you get a tutor who has actually taught your board and your code, rather than whoever lives nearby. Home tutoring inside India suits two kinds of student. Younger ones in Grade 9 who quietly stop working the moment nobody is physically present. And students whose real difficulty is organisational, the ones who do workings on scrap paper, lose past papers and never rule anything off. Somebody in the room can enforce a format habit faster than somebody on a screen. Hybrid is common in Grade 11: a weekly online session for steady coverage, with occasional in-person sessions before mocks and the examination series. Whichever you choose, session length and frequency are agreed up front, the first lesson is free, and you can switch mode later if the student's needs change. Outside India, every session is online.

One-to-One Accounting Tutoring Against the Other Options

Most families weighing up support for this subject are choosing between a private tutor, a commerce coaching batch, a recorded course and whatever extra help the school offers. These are categories rather than named providers. The differences that matter here are about who reads the student's actual handwriting on a ledger page.

What Gets Checked Before IGCSE Accounting Tutors Are Matched

A commerce degree does not prove someone can teach this syllabus, and a practising accountant is not automatically a good match either. Professional habits and examination habits are not the same thing, and a tutor who prepares real ledgers for a living sometimes skips exactly the presentation steps an examiner is looking for. So subject checks are specific. A tutor is asked to produce a set of final accounts with adjustments under time, to mark a genuine student script against the published mark scheme, and to explain aloud how they would award own-figure marks where an early error carried forward. That last task filters more candidates than anything else, because it separates people who know accounting from people who know how this examination is marked. Identity and qualifications are verified, and teaching history is checked against the level claimed rather than taken at face value. Communication is weighed as seriously as technical depth. A tutor who cannot explain why a purchases ledger control account sits on the credit side, in language a fifteen-year-old can repeat back, is not the right person however senior their finance career has been. After a match is made, we track the written notes and what families report. Tutors who stop sending notes, reschedule repeatedly or drift away from the syllabus stop being matched. None of that promises any particular grade, and nobody honest would.

Why Families Start Looking for Help With IGCSE Accounting

Three situations bring parents to this page, and they need very different responses. The first is a topic test that came back far below what the student expected. It is usually on control accounts, bank reconciliation or correction of errors, because those three topics punish a student who has memorised a layout without understanding which side of the ledger each figure belongs on. The second is a teacher comment about untidy or incomplete work. That sounds like a behaviour issue and is almost always technical: missing dates, missing narratives, totals that are not ruled off, balances brought down on the wrong line. The third arrives earlier and matters more. A Grade 9 family has option forms in front of them and is deciding whether Accounting belongs in the set alongside Business Studies or Economics. That decision deserves evidence rather than assumption, and a trial fortnight of real bookkeeping exercises tells you more than any careers leaflet. Whatever brought you here, the starting point is the same. Tell us the syllabus code, the school year, and the exact question or topic that went wrong. Sessions run online in your own time zone across every continent we serve, and in-person teaching is available only inside India, only where a tutor currently has room. The first lesson is free, and a written summary follows every session after that.

Why Do Students Who Understand Accounting Still Lose Marks?

Because this subject marks the process, not the intention. A student can name every adjustment correctly in conversation and still hand in a script that an examiner cannot award. The losses cluster in four places, and all four are fixable inside a term. Format is the first. Ledger accounts need a date column, a narrative naming the corresponding account, folio discipline where the school asks for it, totals ruled off level, and the balance brought down on the correct side underneath. A student who writes a bare column of figures has shown the right thinking and earned a fraction of the marks available. The second is direction. Reversing a debit and a credit on a return, a discount received, or a dishonoured cheque produces an answer that looks plausible and is worth nothing. The third is arithmetic under pressure, which matters here more than in most subjects, since a single slip in a cash book propagates into the trial balance, the control account and the final accounts. Mark schemes on this subject do carry own-figure and error-carried-forward allowances, which is why a tutor teaches a student to keep the later workings internally consistent rather than to panic and start again. The fourth is interpretation. Calculating a current ratio is the easy half. Saying what it means for a specific business, in a sentence that names the consequence, is where Grade 11 marks quietly go.

Dates, narratives, ruled totals and the balance brought down on the correct side

Debit and credit direction on returns, discounts and dishonoured cheques

One early slip travels forward, so later workings must stay internally consistent

Own-figure and error-carried-forward marks reward consistency, not restarting

Ratios calculated but never interpreted lose the second half of the question

What You Should Be Able to See Four Weeks In

By the end of a month there should be paper, not reassurance. Specifically, a written note after each session naming the topic and the errors found. A diagnosis from the trial lesson that later notes keep referring back to, so you can see whether the original problem is closing. And at least one past-paper question that the tutor has marked and annotated, with the lost marks labelled by cause rather than simply crossed out. If none of that exists after four weeks, the tutoring is not being managed properly, however much your child enjoys the sessions. What you should not be offered is a grade. No platform and no tutor can honestly promise a 7, an A star or a 9, and one who does is reading the room rather than the student. What is reasonable to expect by week four is narrower and more useful: entries written with dates and narratives without being reminded, a trial balance that balances more often than not, and a student who notices their own error and traces it back rather than rubbing out the page. This subject also tends to improve in steps rather than smoothly. Marks often flatten while a student is being forced to abandon a fast sloppy method and write properly, then move up once the new habit stops costing time. A tutor who warns you about that in advance is doing the job.

A named diagnosis the later notes keep returning to

At least one marked past-paper question with losses labelled by cause

Starting Accounting Support This Week

A useful first message takes about thirty seconds to write. Something like: Grade 10, Cambridge 0452, lost most of the marks on the control accounts and suspense account questions in the November internal, examinations in May, based in Pune and would prefer online. That is enough to shortlist tutors properly on the first reply rather than the third. If you are undecided about the subject itself, say that instead. Plenty of Indian families are weighing Accounting against Business Studies or Economics for the commerce stream, sometimes with strong opinions in the house about which route leads where. A trial session on real bookkeeping exercises answers that better than any conversation about it, because some students take to the mechanics immediately and some clearly do not. You will get tutor profiles with their board experience and the rate for that specific match, both in writing, before you commit to anything. The first lesson is free. Write to ibgram24@gmail.com or message +91 7439 368 115 on WhatsApp. Families outside India should add their city and time zone so that a slot is proposed in local hours rather than Indian ones.

FAQs

IGCSE tutoring FAQs

How much does an IGCSE Accounting tutor cost?+

There is no published price list, because the rate depends on the tutor's experience, the student's year group, the board being taught and how often you meet. A senior tutor preparing a Grade 11 student for the May series is doing a different job from someone building double-entry fluency with a Grade 9 student, and one rate for both would be dishonest. Once a specific tutor is suggested, their rate is confirmed in writing before you book anything, so you are looking at a real figure rather than a bracket. Ask for it in your first message if you want it early.

Which syllabus code is my child taking, 0452 or 0985?+

Look at the front of the school's course outline or the textbook, where the code is usually printed. Cambridge IGCSE Accounting 0452 and 0985 cover the same content; 0985 is the version reported on the 9-1 grade scale, and some schools enter students for it because their other subjects are graded that way. Pearson Edexcel runs a separate International GCSE in Accounting with its own paper structure. If you are unsure, photograph a recent worksheet header or assessment cover and send it over, and we will identify the route before matching anyone.

My child is strong at maths but weak in Accounting. Why?+

Because this subject is not really testing arithmetic. It tests whether a transaction has been recorded in the right place, on the right side, in the right format, and whether the effect has then been reported correctly. A student with fast mental arithmetic can still reverse a debit and a credit on a purchase return, or write a perfectly calculated ledger with no dates and no narratives, and lose most of the marks. The fix is procedural drilling rather than more mathematics, and it usually shows results within a few weeks because the rules involved are finite and learnable.

Is IGCSE Accounting harder than Business Studies?+

It is harder in a different direction. Accounting is narrow, rule-bound and unforgiving: there is normally one correct treatment, and a careless entry early in a question damages everything after it. Business Studies is broader and more interpretive, and rewards written judgement rather than precision. Students who like clear rules and visible right answers usually prefer Accounting; students who write fluently and enjoy arguing a case usually prefer the other. Neither is an easy option, and a trial session on real bookkeeping exercises is a better guide than anyone's general opinion.

Does IGCSE Accounting have coursework or a project?+

No. On the Cambridge route, 0452 and 0985 are assessed entirely by written examination, with no coursework, no portfolio and no practical component, which makes the planning much simpler than in subjects carrying internal assessment. Everything a student is graded on happens in the examination room. That said, schools set their own internal assignments and mock papers during the course, and a tutor will coach a student through those topics without ever completing the work itself. Confirm the current assessment arrangements with your school, since boards do revise them between syllabus cycles.

What papers does Cambridge IGCSE Accounting involve?+

Candidates sit two compulsory written papers with no Core or Extended tiering, so every student takes the same assessment. One is a multiple-choice paper drawing on the whole syllabus; the other is a longer structured written paper made up of several multi-part questions and carrying the larger share of the total marks. Exact timings and mark totals have changed between syllabus cycles, so check the version your child is entered for on the board's own syllabus document or through the school rather than relying on an older past paper.

Will IGCSE Accounting help with CA, ACCA or a commerce degree?+

It gives a genuine head start on the mechanics, which is a real advantage but a limited one. Double entry, ledgers, trial balances, depreciation and financial statement preparation are the same building blocks that professional routes such as CA, ACCA or CPA begin with, so a student arriving with them secure spends first-year effort on new material rather than catching up. What it does not do is decide anything. Universities and professional bodies set their own entry requirements, none of which depend on a single IGCSE, and plenty of successful commerce students start the subject at A Level or equivalent instead.

Can a tutor focus only on control accounts and bank reconciliation?+

Yes, and it is one of the most common requests on this subject. Those two topics, along with correction of errors and suspense accounts, account for a large share of the marks students lose, because each one asks the student to hold two records of the same transactions and explain why they differ. A tutor can run a short focused block of sessions on exactly that, using past-paper questions rather than textbook exercises. Say so in your first message and we will match someone who has taught those topics recently rather than a generalist.

My child lost a whole question because of one early mistake. Is that normal?+

It is normal, and it is usually less catastrophic than it looks. Mark schemes on this subject carry own-figure and error-carried-forward allowances, meaning an examiner can still award method marks for later work that is consistent with the wrong figure the student produced earlier. What loses those marks is panicking, starting again halfway, or mixing a corrected figure with uncorrected ones. Tutors teach students to keep going consistently and to note the suspect figure rather than abandoning the question. Confirm how your board applies this with the school, since the detail differs between papers.

Can we have a home tutor, or is everything online?+

Online tutoring is available anywhere in the world and is how most of our accounting sessions actually run. Home tutoring is offered only within India, and only where a tutor near you is currently taking in-person students. Coverage is strongest in Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Pune, Gurugram, Noida and South Delhi, and it changes as tutors fill their schedules. We do not run any centre or branch you can visit. If no in-person tutor is free near you, we will say so directly rather than leaving the request open indefinitely.

We live in the Gulf. How are session times arranged?+

Sessions are scheduled in your local time, not Indian time. Tutors are based in India, and the offset between India and the Gulf is small enough that after-school slots in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha or Muscat land comfortably inside an Indian tutor's evening. Families in Singapore, Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur usually take early-evening local slots, and families in the United Kingdom take late-afternoon ones. Include your city and time zone in the first message and we will propose a specific weekly slot in your own hours. Outside India, teaching is online only.

How many sessions a week does this subject need?+

One focused session a week is a reasonable baseline through Grade 9 and Grade 10, provided the student does the set exercises in between, because fluency in double entry comes from repetition rather than from explanation. Two a week is common in Grade 11 or during a recovery after a bad mock, usually split into one teaching session and one where a past paper is marked and picked apart. Beyond two, extra contact hours rarely add much; at that point independent practice is the limiting factor, and an honest tutor will tell you so rather than sell more slots.

Will a tutor complete school assignments or homework?+

No. Tutors explain the topic, work through similar questions, mark the student's own attempt and coach them through the corrections, but they do not produce work that will be handed in or assessed. If a student asks a tutor to prepare an assignment, the tutor will decline and the parent will be told. This matters even in a subject assessed entirely by examination, because internal school assessments still shape predicted grades and set placements, and work a student did not do teaches nothing about where their double entry actually breaks down.

How quickly can tutoring start?+

Usually within a few days, since most of the delay is in confirming details rather than finding anyone. Send the syllabus code, the year group, the topic that went wrong and your city, and two or three profiles with rates normally come back the same day or the next. A free trial lesson can often be scheduled inside the same week. Unusual combinations, such as an in-person tutor in a specific smaller Indian city or a tutor for a narrow overseas time slot, can take longer, and you will be told that rather than matched to whoever happens to be free.

Is IB Gram connected to Cambridge International or Pearson Edexcel?+

No. IB Gram is an independent tutoring platform, not affiliated with, endorsed by or partnered with Cambridge International, Pearson Edexcel, Oxford AQA or the International Baccalaureate Organization. Codes such as 0452 and 0985 are named purely to describe which syllabus a tutor teaches. The awarding bodies remain the only authority on syllabus content, entry rules, assessment structure and results, and anything about timings, mark totals or entry deadlines should be confirmed with your school or directly on the board's own published documents.

Ready to plan IGCSE support?

If a control account question, an unbalanced trial balance or an approaching examination series brought you here, send four things: the year group, the syllabus code, the topic that went wrong and your city. Tutor profiles come back with their board experience and the rate for that specific match, both in writing, before anything is booked. The first lesson is free, and the tutor can be swapped if the pairing does not suit your child.
