IB & IGCSE in Una

An honest look at IB and IGCSE study from Una, Gir Somnath

There are two towns called Una in India, so to be clear, this page is about Una in Gir Somnath district, Gujarat, on the Machchundri river, close to Diu and Kodinar. It has about 58,000 residents and a market that serves one of the largest clusters of villages of any taluka in the state. It does not have a school we can confirm for the IB or Cambridge IGCSE.

That does not leave a student without options. Families in this coastal part of Saurashtra often have relatives in Africa, the United Kingdom, Canada or the Gulf, and some children have spent years abroad before returning. Others are preparing for a move to a larger Gujarat city. For all of them a tutor who is fluent in IB and IGCSE assessment is useful, and a screen removes the hours on the road.

Tutors do not come to a house in Una. Home visits run only in Gurugram and parts of Delhi NCR, so here every lesson is online, live and one to one. The student sits at a desk with a laptop, the tutor sees written working through the camera and uses a shared board for graphs and diagrams, and corrections happen in the moment.

IB Gram is independent of the IB, Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel and any school on this page. Tutors explain and set practice; they never write Internal Assessments, Extended Essays, TOK essays or coursework. The first lesson is free, rates come in writing before booking, and a tutor can be swapped if the fit is wrong.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to Una school years

An Una family will usually meet an IB programme through a particular plan, such as returning from abroad, joining a school in Rajkot or Ahmedabad, or applying overseas. The tutor starts from that plan.

PYPNursery to Class 5, ages 3-12

IB Primary Years Programme

Young children learn through guided inquiry across themes, and the programme ends with a joint exhibition. Tutoring keeps it light, with reading, number work and talking through ideas.

A child from Una who grows up speaking Gujarati at home benefits from short spoken-English sessions before joining a PYP classroom, especially in the first months of a new school.

MYPClass 6-10, ages 11-16

IB Middle Years Programme

Students meet subject criteria in eight groups and close the programme with a Personal Project. The habit that matters most is explaining why an answer works, not just giving it.

Gujarati-medium students entering MYP at Class 6 or Class 9 usually need a bridge in scientific English and in writing analysis paragraphs before the first reports arrive.

DPClass 11-12, ages 16-19

IB Diploma Programme

Three Higher Level and three Standard Level subjects are taken with TOK, the Extended Essay and CAS. A steady weekly tutor in one demanding subject can relieve pressure elsewhere in the timetable.

Students from Una who take the Diploma do so away from home, often in Rajkot, Ahmedabad or Vadodara, and usually ask for support in Mathematics, Chemistry and Economics.

CPClass 11-12, ages 16-19

IB Career-related Programme

A short set of Diploma courses is paired with a career-related study and a reflective project. Only a few Indian schools offer it, so tutoring stays with the academic courses within the pathway.

A student from Una on the CP somewhere else gets support with the Diploma subjects it includes, while the reflective project remains the student's own.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around Una school timetables

No tutor visits a home in Una, so every format below runs online. Pick the one that fits the present stage and change it when circumstances change.

Regular weekly lessons

The standard pattern for a student already enrolled in an IB or IGCSE course away from Una or returning from abroad. One tutor, one evening, and the lesson follows the school's current unit.

  • Consistent tutor and time each week
  • Written work reviewed live on camera
  • A short note after every session
  • Keeps the course moving through holidays spent at home

Readiness before a move

Suited to a GSEB or CBSE student who will join an international school. Lessons target English for study, explanation in words and the topics that differ most from the current board.

  • For Class 6 to Class 10 students in Una
  • Builds English and reasoning together
  • Timed to the admission calendar
  • Reshaped once the new school confirms the course

Focused exam blocks

Short, intensive stretches before the May or November sessions, using past papers, mark schemes and the student's own recurring errors.

  • Two to six weeks of added sessions
  • Timed papers with written feedback

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Una

01

Who studies IB and IGCSE around Una, and where do they go to school?

  • No confirmed IB or IGCSE school inside Una
  • Rajkot, Ahmedabad and Vadodara are the common destinations
  • Tutoring tests fit before a move and supports the child after it
  • Returning overseas families can keep a syllabus going at home

Una sits in the Saurashtra coastal belt, a few kilometres from the Union Territory of Diu, and its families have long looked outward. Trade, migration and the Gujarati diaspora are part of ordinary conversation here, so a parent asking about the IB is often thinking of a child's eventual university abroad, or of a return from Africa, the Gulf or the United Kingdom.

The local schools are GSEB and CBSE institutions, some with a long history, and none is confirmed to teach the IB or Cambridge IGCSE. Families who want those boards therefore weigh a move to Rajkot, Ahmedabad or Vadodara, sometimes with a child living in a hostel or with relatives, and this is a serious decision that deserves time and information.

Tutoring plays two parts in that decision. Before a move, it lets a child test whether an English-medium, criteria-based course suits them, at low cost and without uprooting anyone. After a move, it supports a student who is settling into an unfamiliar syllabus and is far from the family's ordinary sources of help.

Returning families need a third kind of help. A child who studied the IGCSE abroad may land in Una with a few months before a new school starts, and a tutor keeps the syllabus alive and explains what Indian schools expect, including how marks and subjects map across.

02

GSEB, CBSE, IB or IGCSE: what changes for a student from Una?

The Gujarat Board has a clear structure: textbooks prepared by the state, examinations at Class 10 and Class 12, and a large cohort that makes the marking consistent. Many students are taught in Gujarati until Class 10 and then move to English-medium science in Class 11, which is already a hard jump for some. CBSE is English- and Hindi-medium with a national syllabus.

The IB and IGCSE differ in that they test reasoning as much as memory. A chemistry question might give unfamiliar data and ask what it shows; an English task might require a comparison of two texts the student has not met; a mathematics question may ask for a justification. Students used to predictable papers find this unsettling at first, and that is normal.

Language is the first practical issue for a Gujarati-medium learner. Terms such as evaluate, assess and justify carry precise expectations, and a tutor can practise them directly. Strengths travel well too: Gujarat's culture of commerce produces students who are quick with numbers and comfortable with business ideas, which helps in IGCSE Mathematics and Economics.

The table below sets out the differences in one view.

03

How much does IB and IGCSE tuition cost for a family in Una?

  • Tutor experience, level, subject and session length set the fee
  • Nothing spent on travel or hostels for lessons
  • Rate shared in writing before any trial
  • Pause, extend or finish when you choose

The fee is driven by the programme and level, the subject, the length of each session and the experience of the tutor. A Higher Level Diploma science tutor is more expensive than a tutor for early IGCSE work, and a longer session costs more than a shorter one. We tell you the exact figure, in writing, before the trial is booked.

With online lessons a family saves what other students pay in travel. A parent in Una who would have driven to Rajkot or Ahmedabad for a specialist, or paid for a hostel year just to get a single teacher, avoids all of that. The money goes into teaching time.

It is worth asking how much tuition a child actually needs. A student who is strong in most subjects but struggling with IB Physics kinematics may need eight sessions, not a year. Tutors who tell you this are helping you, and the written notes make it straightforward to see when a goal has been reached.

There are no compulsory packages. You can pause for a family wedding or Navratri, resume afterwards, add sessions before exams and stop once the need is met. If the first tutor is not suitable, a replacement is arranged without charge.

04

Online tutor, local tuition class or self-study: which suits a student in Una?

Una and the towns near it offer tuition classes that are good for GSEB and CBSE school subjects and for entrance-test practice. They work well for their purpose. They are not built to explain how an IB Economics extended response is graded, or why a Cambridge 0620 answer lost a mark for a missing unit.

An online tutor is aligned to the exam board. The lesson follows the syllabus code your child will sit, the school's schedule and the official mark schemes, and since it is one to one, the tutor adapts the speed to the student. Screen fatigue is the drawback, so a good tutor keeps the student active, writing, speaking and solving throughout.

Self-study has a place, particularly for past papers, but it depends on feedback. An error that nobody spots can be repeated for weeks. A sensible pattern is one or two tutor sessions a week, daily independent practice and a short review each week to see what the practice exposed.

The comparison below shows how the options stack up.

How do monsoon, cyclones and festivals shape the study year in Una?

IB Diploma examinations are held in May for most Indian schools and in November for some, while Cambridge IGCSE runs in May-June and October-November. A student in Una prepares through hot, humid months on the coast, and the practical steps are a charged laptop, a hotspot as backup and a fixed evening slot once the day's heat has passed.

The Saurashtra coast is exposed to the monsoon and, in some years, to cyclones. Una was directly affected by Cyclone Tauktae in 2021, and power and mobile networks can go down for days after a serious storm. Families planning exam study should keep a backup plan for the June to October period, and tell the tutor early if a storm warning is issued.

Gujarat's festivals also shape the calendar. Navratri brings late nights and reduced study in the weeks around it, Diwali and the Gujarati new year follow soon after, and Uttarayan in mid-January is a favourite holiday. Lessons can be shifted by a day or two without penalty, and students generally do better when the plan acknowledges these weeks openly.

The table gives a typical annual outline.

A typical IB and IGCSE year for a student in Una
MonthsLocal conditionsStudy emphasis
March to JuneSummer heat, IB and Cambridge May papers, mango seasonTimed past papers, late evening sessions

University pathways from Una for IB and IGCSE students

In India, the Association of Indian Universities recognises the IB Diploma and Cambridge qualifications for admission, and CUET-UG is the main gateway to central universities. JEE and NEET have eligibility rules for international-board students that are updated from time to time, so the current notices must be checked each year.

Within Gujarat, students consider Nirma University, Ahmedabad University, Pandit Deendayal Energy University, the Gujarat National Law University at Gandhinagar, CEPT University, and Saurashtra University in Rajkot, alongside the Maharaja Sayajirao University in Vadodara. Further afield, Mumbai and Pune are popular, as are Ashoka and Jindal in Haryana.

A good number of Una families look overseas, given existing links to the United Kingdom, East Africa, Canada and the Gulf. Students applying there need predicted grades and subject combinations that match the course, for example Mathematics and two sciences for engineering, or Economics and Mathematics for finance.

Tutors are not admissions consultants, but they can say plainly what grades a target requires and whether a student's current trajectory is realistic. It helps to ask in the trial lesson, and again after the first mock.

07

What is IB Mathematics, and which course should a Una student choose?

  • Analysis and Approaches for engineering and pure science
  • Applications and Interpretation for business and data
  • Explaining each step is the biggest new skill
  • Science data questions reward care with units and graphs

IB Mathematics is offered as Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, each at Standard and Higher Level. The first suits students aiming at engineering, physical sciences or pure mathematics. The second suits economics, business, psychology and other fields where statistics and modelling dominate. The decision should follow the intended university course.

Gujarat students are frequently confident with arithmetic and accounting-style reasoning, which carries over well. The new demands are explaining each step in words, stating assumptions clearly and using a graphing calculator skilfully in Paper 2. The internal assessment is an exploration of a topic chosen by the student and often feels unfamiliar at first.

A tutor usually begins with a short diagnostic, then sequences topics by their weight in the exam: functions and calculus first, statistics and probability next, then vectors and further topics. At Higher Level, Paper 3 style extended problems are brought in gradually during the second year.

The sciences follow a similar structure of exam papers, an internal assessment and a group project. Data questions are the usual trouble spot, with marks lost through careless unit handling and graph reading rather than gaps in memory.

08

IGCSE Core or Extended, and separate or combined sciences: how to choose

A typical IGCSE student sits between five and eight subjects, including English, mathematics and at least one science. The rest should point toward what follows, whether that is the Diploma, A Levels, or an Indian board in Class 11 and 12.

Core and Extended tiers exist in most subjects. Core caps the highest grade at C, while Extended reaches A*. A student who is capable but under-confident can be placed in Core unnecessarily, so it is worth asking early whether Extended is realistic. A tutor can assess this candidly after a few weeks.

Separate Physics, Chemistry and Biology carry more content and are sound preparation for further science. The combined and co-ordinated courses are lighter, and suit a student whose strength is in commerce or the humanities. Neither is better in general; each suits a different plan.

Gujarati speakers should consider using Hindi as a second language as a scoring subject, while English as a second language develops the writing fluency that every other subject depends on. Business Studies and Accounting also fit well for students from trading families.

Where we tutor

Una, its neighbouring towns and villages where our online tutors teach

Online lessons treat every address the same, so a student in a Gir-side village has the same tutor choice as one beside the Una bus stand. These notes cover daily rhythm, not distance.

Una town centre

The market core on the Machchundri, where trading families are busy until late and evening lessons tend to start after eight.

Bus stand and highway side

Near the main roads toward Veraval and Diu, where students commute by bus and need a tutor available once they are home.

Delwada

A well-known town close to Una, popular for its Jain temples, with families who travel for schooling and value a fixed evening slot.

Ghoghla and the Diu approach

The border area with Diu, where some families have links to both places and are comfortable with online teaching.

Kodinar side

Households toward Kodinar to the west, who commonly drive out for school or coaching and welcome an online specialist.

Veraval road

Families oriented to Veraval and Somnath, sharing the same district, with school journeys that rule out very early slots.

Tulsishyam road

The approach to the Tulsishyam temple, where pilgrim traffic and festival weeks can alter evening routines.

Coastal villages

Fishing and farm communities toward the sea, where mango and coconut orchards shape the season and cyclone warnings can close schools.

Villages toward the Gir forest

Farm households inland, with limited internet in places; a backup connection is settled beforehand.

Una taluka villages

Una has more villages than any other taluka in Gujarat, so many students come to town for school and return home by evening.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Una

Una itself

No school in Una is confirmed for the IB or Cambridge IGCSE. The local choice is among GSEB, CBSE and other board schools, so tutoring supports a family planning a move or a student already at an international school elsewhere.

    Nearby: Rajkot

Rajkot is the largest Saurashtra city within reach and the usual first look for families wanting an international board, though the journey makes it a boarding or relocation decision.

    • The Galaxy School

    Nearby: Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad has the widest choice of international schools in Gujarat, and some families from Gir Somnath shift there for the senior years, especially those with relatives in the city.

    • Ahmedabad International School
    • Udgam School for Children
    • Calorx Olive International School

    Nearby: Vadodara

Vadodara is another long-standing education centre, sometimes chosen by families with existing links to the city or to its universities.

    • Navrachana International School

IB Gram is an independent tutoring service with no link to the IB, Cambridge, Pearson or any named school. We cannot confirm a school in Una that teaches the IB or IGCSE. The schools below are in other cities and are named only to show where families from this area often look; check each school's current curriculum and admissions directly.

    Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Una: your questions answered

Is this page about Una in Gujarat or Una in Himachal Pradesh?+

It is about Una in Gir Somnath district, Gujarat, the town on the Machchundri river near Diu and Kodinar. Una in Himachal Pradesh is a different place. Our online lessons work from either, but the school and board information here, including GSEB and Saurashtra universities, refers to the Gujarat town.

Are there IB or IGCSE schools in Una?+

We cannot confirm any school in Una that teaches the IB or Cambridge IGCSE. Local schools follow GSEB or CBSE. Families seeking an international board usually look at Rajkot, Ahmedabad or Vadodara. Tutoring supports the student before and after such a move, without any claim on behalf of a school.

Can a tutor visit our house in Una?+

No. Tutors do not visit homes in Una, because in-person home tuition runs only in Gurugram and parts of Delhi NCR. Lessons here are online, live and one to one. Your child takes them at home on a laptop, and the tutor watches written work through the camera.

Is online home tuition effective for IB and IGCSE?+

Yes, when it is interactive and the student is active. The tutor checks handwritten working on camera, uses a shared whiteboard for graphs and diagrams and corrects errors immediately. The free trial class lets you judge whether the format suits your child before making any commitment.

How much does tuition cost in Una?+

We do not publish a price list. The rate depends on the programme, subject, level, session length and the tutor's experience, and it is given to you in writing before the trial. There is no travel cost, and no package is compulsory. You can stop whenever the need is met.

My child studies in Gujarati medium. Can they move to IGCSE or IB?+

Yes, with preparation. The main challenge is English for analysis and explanation, not ability. A tutor builds vocabulary, written reasoning and speaking confidence over several months, particularly in science and mathematics. Starting six to twelve months before admission makes the first term far easier.

We have returned from abroad. Can a tutor keep the IGCSE or IB course going?+

Yes. A tutor can continue the syllabus your child was following, cover missed topics and explain how Indian schools map subjects and grades. This is common for families with a link to the UK, Africa, the Gulf or Canada who return to Una for a period before the next move.

Do tutors write the IA, Extended Essay or TOK essay?+

No. Tutors coach and explain but never write or edit submitted work. They can help a student pick a question, understand the criteria, plan time and practise, but the IA, EE or TOK essay must be the student's own. This protects the student's grades and record.

When are the IB and Cambridge exams?+

IB Diploma exams fall in May for most Indian schools, with a November session in some. Cambridge IGCSE runs in May-June and October-November. For Una students these coincide with summer heat or the tail of the monsoon, so plan early and keep a backup for power and internet.

What happens during a cyclone or monsoon storm?+

Power and mobile networks can fail for a day or more. Tell the tutor when a warning is issued, and we will reschedule without penalty. Keep the laptop and phone charged, and have a backup connection ready during the June to October period, particularly in the weeks before exams.

Can IB or IGCSE students from Una apply to Indian universities?+

Yes. The Association of Indian Universities recognises these qualifications, and CUET-UG is the usual route to central universities. JEE and NEET have conditions for international-board students that change from time to time, so check the official notices each year. A tutor helps the student target the grades each route needs.

What is in the free trial class?+

A real lesson of thirty to forty-five minutes on a topic from your child's current work. The tutor checks the level, teaches part of the topic and suggests a plan. You are under no obligation, and the rate has already been shared, so you can decide without pressure.

How many hours a week should a student take?+

Most students take one or two sessions of about an hour a week, increasing before exams. A student who is doing well may need less. The short note after each lesson makes it easy to see whether the pace is right, and you can adjust it at any time.

Can you help a young child before PYP admission?+

Yes, gently. Sessions focus on spoken English, reading, number sense and curiosity instead of formal exam practice. For a Gujarati-speaking child likely to enter a PYP classroom elsewhere, early practice in explaining ideas aloud makes the transition smoother.

    Can we change the tutor?+

Yes. Tell us what is not working, whether teaching style, pace or timing, and we arrange another tutor, usually with a fresh trial. A good fit matters more than persisting with a poor one, and there is no penalty for asking.

    How do we begin?+

Email support@ibgram.com or WhatsApp +91 7439 368 115 with your child's class, school or board and the subjects involved. We reply with a suggested tutor, a written rate and a time for the free trial. A photo of the syllabus page or the latest report card is enough.
