IB & IGCSE in Umreth

A Charotar taluka town with overseas cousins, saree shops and no international school

Umreth is the seat of its own taluka in Anand district, a town of a little over thirty thousand people in the middle of the Charotar plain. Its old core is walled, with gates on four sides and a maze of pols and phalis where carved wooden houses still stand. The bazaar is known for saree and cloth shops, and the edges of town hold a good number of puffed-rice units. Anand, the nearest city, is where much of the district's administration and higher education sits, and the temple town of Dakor lies a short drive to the north-east.

Schools in the town follow the Gujarat board or CBSE. We looked for an IB or Cambridge IGCSE school in Umreth taluka and could not confirm one. The families who still ask about IB and IGCSE tutors in Umreth usually share one thing: a link outside the district. Charotar is well known for relatives settled in the United Kingdom, North America and East Africa, so a child may have studied at an international school there, or may be planning a degree abroad in a city where cousins already live.

On home tuition we are precise. IB Gram tutors do not come to houses in Umreth; in-person visits run only in Gurugram and some Delhi NCR neighbourhoods. A student in Umreth gets private tuition at home in its online form: a live video lesson, a shared digital board, past papers marked while the child watches, and a written note afterwards, with a tutor based in India who teaches in IST. For a family that once treated a Vadodara tutor as a weekend expedition, that is a real saving of time.

IB Gram is a small independent service. No school named on this page, and none of the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, has endorsed us or agreed anything with us. Tutors teach, explain and comment on drafts, but the Internal Assessment, Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge essay and coursework are always written by the student.

At a glance

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to Umreth school years

Umreth's classrooms speak the language of the Gujarat board and CBSE, so the IB's own vocabulary needs translating. This is what each programme involves, and what we tend to hear from Charotar families.

PYPNursery to Class 5, ages 3-11

IB Primary Years Programme

Children work through transdisciplinary units of inquiry and finish with a self-chosen Exhibition project; there are no board-style written exams to sit.

In Umreth the PYP question usually comes from a family that has lived abroad, where the child began an inquiry-based primary school, and now wants reading, writing and number skills kept in step.

MYPClass 6 to Class 10, ages 11-16

IB Middle Years Programme

Each subject is assessed against four published criteria, and the Personal Project at the end is an independent piece of work the student plans and reports on.

Students arriving from a Gujarati-medium classroom tend to need most help with extended answers in English and with explaining a method, not only stating the result.

DPClass 11-12, ages 16-19

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects at Higher or Standard Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS; the final papers fall mainly in May, with a smaller November session.

With no authorised school in the taluka, a Diploma student tied to Umreth is in practice enrolled in another city, so online lessons fill weekends, the Diwali break and the study leave before the May papers.

CPClass 11-12, ages 16-19

IB Career-related Programme

A pair or trio of DP courses is combined with a career-related study, a reflective project and a personal and professional skills strand.

The CP runs in only a minority of IB schools, so a request from Umreth is unlikely; the DP-course part of it is taught exactly as it would be for any Diploma student.

Subject coverage

IB subjects we tutor

A student in Umreth on an IB or IGCSE course is usually the only one in the lane. We match tutors on subject, level and syllabus code, and the tutor teaches from the official subject guide or specification, not from a textbook summary.

IB Mathematics: Analysis & Approaches

HL / SL

Functions, calculus and proof-style reasoning for students aiming at engineering, physics or computing; the exploration is a short written investigation of the student's own choosing.

IB Mathematics: Applications & Interpretation

SL / HL

Statistics, modelling and technology-supported work, a sensible choice for commerce, economics, design and life-science paths.

IB Physics

HL / SL

Mechanics, waves, fields and modern physics, with a practical investigation that the student plans and writes up alone.

IB Chemistry

HL / SL

Bonding, energetics, kinetics, equilibrium and organic routes, with fluent use of the data booklet.

IB Biology

HL / SL

Cell biology through to ecology, with the structured long answers the papers reward.

IB Business Management

HL / SL

Cases analysed with the course tools; a student can test them on firms he already knows, such as a dairy cooperative, a cloth wholesaler or a puffed-rice mill.

IB Economics

HL / SL

Markets, cooperatives, trade and development, with accurate diagrams and evaluative paragraphs.

IB Computer Science

HL / SL

Algorithms, data structures, databases and a documented programming solution.

IB Geography

HL / SL

Population, resources and change, drawing on Indian river-plain case studies as well as global ones.

IB Environmental Systems & Societies

SL / HL

Land, water and sustainability, tested through a fieldwork-style investigation.

IB Psychology

HL / SL

Research methods, the three approaches to behaviour and a small experimental study carried out by the student.

IB English A: Language & Literature

HL / SL

Close reading and comparative writing for students whose home language is Gujarati.

IB Hindi B

SL / HL

Reading, writing and the individual oral, for students who already speak the language and need exam structure.

Theory of Knowledge (TOK)

DP Core

Testing how claims are known across subjects; the exhibition and the essay stay entirely the student's.

Extended Essay (EE)

DP Core

Choosing a researchable question and keeping to a timetable; the essay itself is the student's own work.

IB MYP Sciences and Mathematics

MYP 1-5

Criterion-based investigations and clear written reasoning.

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Umreth

01

Is there an IB or IGCSE school in Umreth, and where do families look instead?

  • No IB or IGCSE school confirmed in Umreth taluka
  • Vadodara and Ahmedabad hold the nearest confirmed schools
  • Weekend and holiday lessons suit students who board elsewhere
  • Private IGCSE candidates need an exam centre in a larger city

We could not confirm one. The schools we found in Umreth and across the taluka teach the Gujarat board syllabus or CBSE, and none of them shows an IB authorisation or a Cambridge or Edexcel IGCSE centre. The nearest confirmed international-curriculum schools are in Vadodara and Ahmedabad, both too far for a daily school run from the town.

Distance explains the gap. Anand, the nearest city, is about 25 kilometres away in a straight line, and its own schools follow the state board or CBSE. Vadodara is about 45 kilometres to the south-west and Ahmedabad about 65 kilometres to the north-west, and the road journeys are longer than those figures suggest. A family that wants a full-time IB or IGCSE school therefore has to think about boarding, a rented flat near the campus or a household move, none of which is a casual decision.

That is where tutoring fits. A child enrolled at a school in Vadodara or Ahmedabad can keep a tutor in Umreth for weekends and breaks without disturbing the school week. A child back from abroad can keep an earlier syllabus moving while the family decides what comes next. A student preparing for IGCSE as a private candidate can follow a complete course at home. In each case the arrangement for IB and IGCSE tutors in Umreth is the same: a live online lesson, one tutor and one student.

None of this replaces a school. A Diploma student needs laboratories, a peer group and the CAS programme, and only an authorised school provides them. If a school in the taluka has recently started an IB or Cambridge course, tell us and we will correct this page.

02

GSEB, CBSE, IGCSE or IB: how do the routes differ for an Umreth student?

The Gujarat board and CBSE reward accurate recall and application of a fixed textbook, while IGCSE and IB reward explanation, interpretation and answers shaped to a mark scheme. A student who is excellent in one route is not automatically strong in the other, which is why a switch needs a plan.

Most Umreth students sit the Gujarat board's Secondary School Certificate papers in Class 10 and the Higher Secondary papers in Class 12, written in March. Many classrooms teach in Gujarati, with English as a subject, and the papers follow the prescribed textbooks closely. Preparation is thorough, and students arrive with disciplined habits, a good memory for facts and speed in arithmetic.

CBSE schools in and around Anand use the NCERT syllabus with more application questions, and they feed the JEE and NEET stream. IGCSE and the IB break from both: papers are in English, command words such as evaluate or justify decide how much a sentence is worth, and marks are allocated by criteria rather than by the page of a textbook. The IB adds internal assessment, the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge.

The table sets the routes side by side as an Umreth family would meet them.

03

What does IB or IGCSE tuition cost for a student in Umreth?

  • Level, subject, tutor experience and weekly hours set the rate
  • A written quote before the free trial and again before booking
  • No weekly trip to Anand, Vadodara or Ahmedabad
  • Start light and add hours only when the notes show a need

There is no published rate card, because the fee depends on four things: the level (IGCSE or IB, and which stage), the subject, the tutor's experience of that exact course and the number of hours each week. You receive the figure in writing before the free trial and again before booking, so nothing is a surprise.

The differences are real. A tutor who has taught Higher Level Chemistry is harder to find than a general mathematics tutor, and an IB Diploma student in the months before internal assessment deadlines needs more hours than a Class 6 MYP learner. A single weekly lesson and a daily exam-season programme are different products with different results, and they are priced accordingly.

For Umreth, the sensible comparison is rarely with a cheaper local class. It is with the cost of reaching a teacher at all: a weekly journey to Anand or Vadodara in fuel and lost evenings, plus a parent's time, or a boarding arrangement in a bigger city. Online lessons at home remove the journey, which saves time as well as fuel.

A staged approach keeps spending predictable. Many families begin with one lesson a week, add a second ahead of mocks and drop back after the exams. If a student is already coping well, the tutor's notes will say so, and we will not sell extra sessions.

Online tutor, Anand coaching class, private home tutor or self-study: what works for Umreth?

For a specialist course such as IB Physics HL or IGCSE Extended Mathematics, a live online tutor who has taught that exact syllabus usually helps most. Coaching classes and neighbourhood tutors are strong for Gujarat board and entrance-test work, and self-study is best kept for revision.

Coaching in and around Anand is built around state-board and CBSE batches and, for older students, JEE and NEET. That training is valuable, but a batch of thirty cannot mark a criterion-based Internal Assessment draft or explain why an answer earned four marks out of six. Private tutors who visit homes are trusted and flexible, and the question to put to each is whether they have taught the specific syllabus.

The weak point of online tuition is infrastructure: a short power cut or a slow connection in the middle of a lesson. We agree a fallback slot at the start and suggest a phone hotspot as backup, so a bad evening costs a few minutes and not a whole session.

Self-study with past papers is a good habit and a poor teacher of new material. It works when a student already understands a topic and needs timing practice; it does not help with a topic that was never understood in the first place.

How do Navratri, the Diwali break and Charotar summers shape the study year in Umreth?

They set the rhythm. The school year opens in June, Navratri takes late evenings in autumn, a long Diwali break splits the year in two, Uttarayan pauses a day in January, and the heat of April to June makes afternoons unproductive. Lessons work best when they are planned around those fixed points.

Navratri is the largest of them. For nine nights, garba circles take over societies and lanes, and students who were out late are not fresh the next morning. We keep lessons light that week or move them to a weekend daytime, and we place heavier teaching before the festival begins.

The Diwali vacation, which in Gujarat schools can run to about three weeks, is the best stretch for a concentrated block, because a student can finish a topic without homework from school on top. Uttarayan on 14 January is a day of kites and rooftops; nobody studies well on it, so we do not schedule lessons.

From April the heat builds, and May and June in central Gujarat are often above 40 degrees Celsius. Midday lessons tire everyone; early mornings and evenings work better. The monsoon from late June to September brings relief and the occasional power interruption. The table maps the year against the exam series.

Where can an IB or IGCSE student from Umreth study after school?

Within India, the Association of Indian Universities treats the IB Diploma as equivalent to Class 12, and a set of IGCSE results is accepted in place of Class 10. Central universities admit through CUET-UG, and for engineering and medicine the JEE and NEET conditions on subjects must be checked early.

Close to home, Anand district has its own education cluster. Vallabh Vidyanagar, beside Anand, is the seat of Sardar Patel University and of engineering colleges run by Charutar Vidya Mandal, and Anand Agricultural University offers agriculture, food technology and related degrees. Ahmedabad adds Nirma University, CEPT University, Ahmedabad University and the National Institute of Design, and Gandhinagar has IIT Gandhinagar and the Gujarat National Law University.

Overseas study is a live option for many Charotar families because relatives are already abroad. Universities in the UK, Canada, the United States and Australia read IB and Cambridge results directly, so there is no equivalence step, but language tests, budgets and timelines add their own work. Planning in Class 10 or the first term of Class 11 leaves room for subject choice and for the entrance tests some countries ask for.

Whatever the destination, the Class 11 subject choice is where paths split. A tutor can say which combinations keep engineering, medicine, commerce or design open.

IB Maths and the sciences for a student from a Gujarati-medium classroom

  • Board discipline carries over; written explanation needs practice
  • AA points toward engineering, AI toward economics and biology
  • Internal investigations need a method the student can defend
  • A bilingual glossary for each science unit

A student from a Gujarati-medium or state-board classroom usually brings quick calculation and an exact memory for formulae, and the IB can use both. What it asks in addition is explanation in English: why a method works, what an assumption costs and how a result should be read. Strong mathematicians lose marks simply because working is not set out in the shape examiners expect.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches suits students pointing toward engineering, the physical sciences or computing, with an emphasis on algebra, calculus and proof-like argument. Applications and Interpretation suits commerce, economics, design and the life sciences, with statistics, modelling and technology. Both include an exploration chosen by the student. A diagnostic lesson, marked to the criteria, helps a family choose between the two courses and between HL and SL before the decision sets.

In the sciences, the internal investigation is the biggest change. The student must pose a question, design a method, handle uncertainty and reach a defensible conclusion, which is quite unlike reproducing a prescribed practical. A tutor helps with planning, structure and what a mark scheme looks for; the investigation itself is the student's.

Science vocabulary is the first hurdle. Terms learnt in Gujarati need English equivalents, so each unit starts with a short glossary the student builds and keeps.

08

IGCSE Core or Extended, and which subjects suit a Charotar student?

  • Extended keeps A* possible; Core caps at C
  • Accounting and Business Studies suit commerce-minded families
  • 0606 prepares for IB Mathematics HL
  • Decide the tier using real mock marks

The Extended tier opens grades up to A* in tiered Cambridge subjects, while Core stops at grade C, so a student aiming at A Level, the IB or a science degree should usually sit Extended in Mathematics and the sciences. Core suits a lighter load, but it should be a decision and not an accident of enrolment.

Subject choice follows direction. Accounting and Business Studies suit families from trading and cooperative backgrounds, and they connect naturally to IB Business Management and Economics later. Co-ordinated Sciences is a lighter route for a child who will not pursue science, while separate Physics, Chemistry and Biology keep medicine and engineering available. Computer Science rewards a student who already enjoys coding.

Language deserves attention. A child who speaks Gujarati at home gains from English as a Second Language and from reading science texts in English early. Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel differ in how they assess, so the board is chosen first and the tutor matched after.

Review the tier at mid-course using mock marks, not on the first day. Extended mathematics, additional mathematics and a first look at calculus also prepare a student for IB Mathematics at Higher Level, if the IB is the next step.

Where we tutor

Umreth and the Charotar towns around it

Online lessons ignore distance, but evenings, power and exam leave still differ from one lane to the next. These notes cover the town itself and its neighbours.

Old Umreth (pols and phalis)

The walled core with its carved wooden houses and narrow lanes. Homes are often multi-generational and compact, so headphones and an agreed quiet hour make a lesson far easier.

Chokshi Bazar and the market streets

Home of the saree and cloth traders, many of them family firms. Children from shop families tend to study after the shutters come down, so a later evening slot suits.

Station and bus-stand side

Where the roads out of town begin. Students whose parents commute to Anand or Nadiad for work often ask for slots after seven in the evening.

Residential societies at the town edge

Newer housing outside the old walls, with more room for a fixed desk and a closed door; evenings here are usually the easiest to protect.

Ode

A town some distance south of Umreth. Families here weigh Anand and Vadodara for schooling, and online lessons remove an extra leg from the journey.

Dakor

Known for the Ranchhodrai temple and the pilgrim crowds on full-moon days. On those days traffic and mobile networks get crowded, so a spare lesson time is worth agreeing.

Thasra

A taluka town on the Dakor side. Families split their attention between Kheda district and Anand, so we ask where a student's school is before suggesting hours.

Anand and Vallabh Vidyanagar

The nearest city and its education suburb, home to Sardar Patel University and the engineering colleges. Umreth students aiming at local degrees visit often.

Nadiad

The Kheda district city to the west, on the Ahmedabad road. A natural stop for families commuting between Umreth and Ahmedabad.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Umreth

Umreth taluka

We found no school in the taluka with an IB authorisation or a Cambridge or Edexcel IGCSE centre. Local classrooms teach the Gujarat board syllabus or CBSE.

    Nearby: Vadodara

About 45 kilometres south-west in a straight line, and the nearest city with confirmed IB and Cambridge schools; road journeys are longer, so a move or boarding arrangement is the realistic route.

    • Navrachana International School
    • VIBGYOR High School, Padra Road
    • The Kabir School

    Nearby: Ahmedabad

Around 65 kilometres to the north-west, with the widest choice of IB and Cambridge schools in the state, and the usual direction for a family that wants a bigger city.

    • Calorx Olive International School
    • Ahmedabad International School
    • Mahatma Gandhi International School

IB Gram runs tuition; it is not a school, an agent or an admissions desk. The schools below are listed only so Umreth families can see where international curricula are actually taught in this part of Gujarat. None has endorsed, recommended or contracted with us, and inclusion is not a quality ranking.

    5. 05

      Watch the notes

A short written note after every lesson, plus a broader review every few weeks.

    Why families choose us

What Umreth parents tell us matters most

    Clear about Umreth

We say plainly that no IB or IGCSE school is confirmed here and that tutors do not visit houses.

    Course-specific tutors

Matched by IB subject and level or IGCSE syllabus code, not by a general subject label.

    Calendar-aware

Navratri, the Diwali break, Uttarayan and the pre-monsoon heat are planned for, not fought.

    Trial first

You see the tutor teach before paying anything.

    The student's own work

Coursework is coached, never written for the student.

    Easy to change

A poor match is replaced with a new tutor at no charge.

    Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Umreth: your questions answered

Is there an IB or IGCSE school in Umreth?+

We could not confirm one. The schools we found in Umreth and the surrounding taluka follow the Gujarat board or CBSE. The closest confirmed IB and Cambridge schools are in Vadodara and Ahmedabad, which are too far for a daily trip from town. If a local school has recently begun an IB or Cambridge programme, write to us and we will update this page.

Do IB Gram tutors visit homes in Umreth?+

No. In-person home tuition is available only in Gurugram and some parts of Delhi NCR. A student in Umreth gets private tuition at home in its online form: a live video lesson with a shared whiteboard, past papers marked while the student watches, and a written note afterwards. The tutor is based in India and teaches in IST, so there is no time-zone problem.

How does online home tuition work for an IB student in Umreth?+

The student joins a video call at a fixed time each week, and the tutor teaches on a digital board while the student writes on paper in view of the camera. Work is photographed and marked as you go. Use headphones, keep a phone hotspot ready for a power cut, and tell us if the line is weak so we can shorten or reschedule that session.

What does IB or IGCSE tuition cost in Umreth?+

There is no rate card; the fee follows the level, the subject, the tutor's experience of that exact course and the hours you choose. A written quote reaches you before the free trial and again before booking. For most families the fair comparison is the cost and time of travelling to a teacher in Anand or Vadodara each week, and online lessons remove that journey.

Is there a free trial lesson?+

Yes, the first lesson with any matched tutor is free. Your child works on a real topic from their own syllabus, and you can see how the tutor explains it. If the fit is wrong, we change the tutor at no charge. Nothing is billed until you have seen the tutor teach and approved the written rate.

My child studies in Vadodara or Ahmedabad. Can lessons run on weekends?+

Yes. Many students enrolled elsewhere use Saturday or Sunday slots, plus Diwali-break and summer blocks when they are home in Umreth. The tutor follows the school's own scheme of work, so lessons reinforce the term and do not compete with it. Some families then keep one weekly slot going all year.

We have relatives abroad and may move. Can a tutor bridge a change of curriculum?+

Yes, within reason. A tutor can map what a student has covered in a Gujarat board or overseas classroom against the IGCSE or IB syllabus, spot the gaps and set a catch-up plan. The earlier this is done, the easier it gets, because IB and IGCSE units build on one another. Tell us the target school and year, and we will plan backwards from there.

Which IB subjects can you teach?+

The sciences, both Mathematics courses, Business Management, Economics, Computer Science, Geography, Environmental Systems and Societies, Psychology, English A and Hindi B are the usual requests, with Theory of Knowledge, Extended Essay guidance and MYP support alongside. If your subject is not listed, send it over and we will check who has taught it.

Which IGCSE syllabuses do you cover?+

Both Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel. Typical requests are Mathematics 0580 or Edexcel 4MA1, Additional Mathematics 0606, the three separate sciences, Business Studies, Accounting, Economics, Computer Science and English as a Second Language. We confirm the exact code and whether the student sits Core, Extended, Foundation or Higher before suggesting a tutor.

Can a tutor write my child's Internal Assessment or Extended Essay?+

No. A tutor can explain a criterion, test a research question and comment on an outline or draft, but every word submitted must be the student's own. The IB and Cambridge both treat authenticity as non-negotiable, and so do we. The same applies to Theory of Knowledge essays and any IGCSE coursework.

How do Navratri and the Diwali break affect lessons?+

We lighten or move lessons in Navratri week because late garba nights leave students tired, and we use the Diwali vacation for longer blocks instead. Tell us your family's dates at the start and we will plan around them. Heavier teaching goes before and after the festival so that progress is not lost.

Do summer heat and power cuts disturb online lessons?+

They can, so we plan for them. From April to June we prefer early-morning and evening slots, and younger children get shorter sessions. A short power cut is handled with a fallback slot and a phone hotspot. If the connection drops mid-lesson, the tutor resumes where it stopped and the time is not lost.

Can a student from Umreth take Cambridge IGCSE as a private candidate?+

Often yes, by entering through a Cambridge-registered exam centre, usually a school or institution in a larger city such as Vadodara or Ahmedabad. Fees, deadlines and practical arrangements are set by the centre, so ask early. IB Gram tutoring covers content and exam technique only. The IB Diploma is different: a candidate must be registered through an authorised IB school.

How do IB and IGCSE affect college options from Gujarat?+

The Association of Indian Universities treats the IB Diploma as equivalent to Class 12, central universities admit through CUET-UG, and engineering and medicine add their own subject conditions through JEE and NEET. Gujarat's professional-course admissions have their own rules, so check the current brochure early. Foreign universities read IB and Cambridge grades directly.

    When should we start tutoring?+

Earlier is easier. For IGCSE, Class 8 or early Class 9 leaves time to settle the Core or Extended decision. For the IB Diploma, the summer before Class 11 lets the student begin calmly. A late start is possible, but it needs a tighter plan and more weekly hours.

Can younger children on the PYP or early MYP be taught online?+

Yes, with shorter sessions and plenty of interaction. For a child in Classes 1 to 5, a lesson usually runs 30 to 40 minutes, with reading aloud, number games and short writing tasks. MYP students from Class 6 can manage 45 to 60 minutes. A parent is welcome to sit nearby for the first few lessons.

Is IB Gram connected with any school in Umreth or Anand?+

No. We operate independently, with no tie to any school or to the IB, Cambridge or Pearson. School names on this page only show Umreth families where international curricula are taught nearby.

    How do I get started?+

Write to support@ibgram.com or WhatsApp +91 7439 368 115 with the programme or board, the subject, the level and how your child studies now. We reply with a tutor shortlist and a suggested trial time in IST.
