IB & IGCSE in Udupi

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like around Udupi

Udupi is a temple town with a serious academic streak. The Krishna Matha draws visitors all year, but it is Manipal, a few kilometres up the road, that shapes how many local families think about education: the Manipal Academy of Higher Education campus, its medical and engineering colleges and a steady flow of students from other states and countries give the belt an unusually outward-looking feel for a town of its size.

That outward look has not yet produced a local IB or Cambridge classroom that we could confirm. Searching school directories for the Udupi belt returned no listing for an IB World School or a Cambridge or Edexcel IGCSE centre, so we name none. Families who want these qualifications either study through a school elsewhere, enter as private candidates through an approved exam centre, or arrive in Manipal already partway through the course.

This is where online one-to-one tuition earns its place. A child following the IGCSE at a boarding school in Bengaluru, an IB student whose parents have just joined the Manipal faculty, or a Grade 9 student preparing privately can all work with a tutor who has recently taught the exact syllabus. The lesson happens on a laptop at home. Nobody from IB Gram travels to Udupi.

The service is independent. IB Gram has no tie to the IB, to Cambridge, to Pearson or to any school or university mentioned here, and tutors coach rather than author: no Internal Assessment, Extended Essay, TOK essay or coursework is ever written for a student.

At a glance

  • IB PYP, MYP, DP and CP support, plus Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel IGCSE
  • Online private tuition from home, one to one, in IST

  • Free trial lesson, tutor change if the fit is wrong, rates agreed in writing first
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to Udupi school years

Since the Udupi belt has no IB school we could verify, each programme reaches a local family through a different door. Some arrive through a transfer, some through a distance or boarding arrangement, and some through a parent who simply wants a child to keep an international syllabus going after a job move. The notes below describe what each stage tends to need.

PYPClass 1-5, ages 6-11

IB Primary Years Programme

Learning is organised into units of inquiry rather than subject silos, and the final-year Exhibition asks a child to investigate a question of their own and present it. Reading fluency, number sense and confident spoken English are the practical foundations a tutor can build.

In Udupi, PYP requests mostly come from Manipal households whose younger child began primary school abroad or in a metro city and needs a familiar style of teaching to bridge the gap.

MYPClass 6-10, ages 11-16

IB Middle Years Programme

Each subject is marked against four criteria, and the Class 10 Personal Project is a piece of independent work a student plans and reflects on in a process journal. Criterion-based writing is the skill many students find hardest to pick up quickly.

A Udupi student who joins a Karnataka SSLC or CBSE school after MYP years elsewhere often needs help moving from criterion language back to a single end-of-year paper, or the other way round.

DPClass 11-12, ages 16-19

IB Diploma Programme

Three subjects at Higher Level, three at Standard Level, Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS make up the Diploma. Internal Assessments feed into most subjects, and the written examinations arrive in the May session.

DP learners connected to Udupi are usually enrolled at a school outside the district or studying alongside relatives in Manipal, and they tend to ask for a specialist in one demanding Higher Level subject rather than blanket cover.

CPClass 11-12, ages 16-19

IB Career-related Programme

The CP combines two or three Diploma courses with a career-related study, a reflective project and personal and professional skills. It is uncommon in India, but the Diploma courses inside it are taught to the usual standard.

Demand from Udupi is occasional, coming from families returning from postings abroad where their child had already started a CP pathway.

Subject coverage

IB subjects we tutor

Every match starts with a syllabus code, a level and an exam session. For an Udupi student that usually means working backwards from the May series and fitting lessons around a school day that may begin early on the coast.

IB Maths Analysis & Approaches

HL / SL

Algebraic fluency, proof and the open-ended Paper 3 problems for HL; steady past-paper timing for SL students who need marks more than extra content.

IB Maths Applications & Interpretation

HL / SL

Modelling, statistics and technology use, with an exploration that needs an honest choice of topic long before the deadline.

IB Physics

HL / SL

Comfort with the data booklet, quick estimation for Paper 1 and an investigation whose method a stranger could repeat.

IB Chemistry

HL / SL

Stoichiometry and equilibrium, then organic mechanisms at HL, where students who coasted through early units can suddenly need support.

IB Biology

HL / SL

Command-term precision and the statistics behind a defensible investigation, useful for students with medicine in mind.

IB Economics

HL / SL

Diagrams attached to live examples, and HL policy evaluation that asks for weighing, not listing.

IB Business Management

HL / SL

Case-based application and a research project built on one real organisation.

IB English A Language & Literature

HL / SL

Unseen-text analysis under time, comparative essays across works, and a spoken commentary that rewards preparation.

IB Computer Science

HL / SL

Algorithms and object-oriented thinking, with a solution write-up that explains real design choices.

IB Psychology

HL / SL

Studies cited accurately across the three approaches and essays that argue instead of listing.

IB Environmental Systems & Societies

SL / HL

A coastal, monsoon-fed district makes local examples easy to find; the exam itself rewards evaluation.

IB Geography

HL / SL

Case studies with real depth, plus a fieldwork investigation with a repeatable method.

IB History

HL / SL

Source handling in Paper 1 and one sustained line of argument in the essay papers.

IB Kannada B and Hindi B

HL / SL

Language acquisition courses for Udupi households where Kannada, Tulu or Konkani are spoken at home; text types, listening and the individual oral.

Theory of Knowledge (TOK)

DP Core

Spoken coaching on the exhibition and on unpacking a prescribed title, never on writing the submission.

IGCSE coverage

IGCSE subjects we tutor

IGCSE learners linked to Udupi usually sit Cambridge papers, but Pearson Edexcel is available too. The first job is to confirm the board, the syllabus code and whether the child is entered for Core or Extended, because the papers and grade ceilings differ.

IGCSE Mathematics 0580

Core / Extended

Method marks at Extended, non-calculator accuracy and the habit of showing every step.

IGCSE Additional Mathematics 0606

Grade 10

Early calculus and trigonometry that make a later IB Maths AA course feel less abrupt.

IGCSE Physics 0625

Core / Extended

Equation handling, circuits, waves and the alternative-to-practical paper.

IGCSE Chemistry 0620

Core / Extended

Mole calculations, bonding, and planning for the practical-based paper well in advance.

IGCSE Biology 0610

Core / Extended

Inheritance, ecology and structured long answers.

IGCSE Combined and Co-ordinated Sciences

Core / Extended

For schools that award two science grades from one course, with topic balance across all three sciences.

IGCSE English First Language 0500

Grade 9-10

Directed writing, summary and composition, taught as techniques a student can practise.

IGCSE Economics 0455

Grade 9-10

Diagram accuracy and the longer evaluative answers that separate the top grades.

IGCSE Business Studies 0450

Grade 9-10

Applying theory to the named business in the case study.

IGCSE Computer Science 0478

Grade 9-10

Pseudocode, logic and algorithm tracing on unfamiliar problems.

IGCSE Kannada and Hindi as a second language

Grade 9-10

Regular practice in writing and speaking for students who have missed the local-language routine.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around Udupi school timetables

Every Udupi family ends up in a live online lesson, but they arrive for different reasons. Here are the three patterns we see most.

Weekly one-to-one lessons over video

A fixed weekly slot with the same tutor, using a shared digital whiteboard and past papers. This is private tuition from home, delivered online.

  • Any IB programme or IGCSE board
  • Evenings and weekends, with room around SSLC or PUC hours
  • A written note after every session
  • Same tutor from week to week

Transfer support for a child changing boards

Short, targeted help when a student moves between IB, IGCSE, CBSE or the Karnataka board, aimed at the differences in command words, coursework and marking.

  • Useful for children joining Manipal families mid-year
  • Gap analysis in the first two sessions
  • Progress reviewed every few weeks
  • Stops when the gap has closed

Revision blocks before an exam session

Intensive weeks of timed papers with rapid feedback before the May or November series, planned with the coastal monsoon and festival weeks in mind.

  • Two to four sessions a week for the final weeks
  • Papers marked against current grade boundaries
  • Best booked a month ahead
  • Individual weak topics targeted first

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Udupi

01

Who looks for IB and IGCSE tutors in Udupi and Manipal?

  • The Manipal campus is the biggest single source of IB and IGCSE enquiries
  • Gulf and banking links mean many Udupi families already know international systems
  • Local IB and IGCSE schools could not be confirmed, so lessons run online
  • Tutors coach; they never write assessed work

A handful of household types account for nearly all our enquiries from the Udupi belt. The first is the Manipal campus family. A lecturer, surgeon or researcher joins MAHE or its teaching hospital after years abroad or in Bengaluru, Chennai or Delhi, and the child arrives mid-course on an IB or IGCSE syllabus with no matching school in town.

The second is the returning Gulf family. Udupi and the surrounding coast have a long tradition of migration to the Gulf and of banking careers, since more than one well-known Indian bank traces its roots to the town. When parents return, a child who studied on a British or American-style curriculum abroad may want to finish an IGCSE or Diploma rather than switch to SSLC.

The third is the local family who simply prefers the international route. Perhaps the plan is a UK, Canadian or Australian degree, or perhaps a parent has seen how IGCSE Sciences are taught and wants that approach for a child still in Class 8. Some of these students enrol through a school in Mangaluru or Bengaluru; others prepare privately and sit papers through an approved centre.

In every case the tutor matters because the local ecosystem does not include specialist IB or IGCSE teachers to draw on. An online match widens the search to teachers across India who have taught the course recently.

The city itself has plenty of ordinary tuition, of course: SSLC and PUC coaching, CBSE chemistry classes, and the entrance-exam classes that Manipal's reputation supports. It is the international-syllabus layer that is thin.

02

How does IB or IGCSE differ from Karnataka SSLC, PUC and CBSE?

  • SSLC and PUC reward recall; IB and IGCSE reward explanation
  • Karnataka's PU-college split does not exist in the IB Diploma
  • IB internal assessments are part of the grade, not an extra
  • Switching systems needs deliberate bridging on command words

The short answer is that IB and IGCSE ask a student to explain and apply, where SSLC and PUC papers in Karnataka mostly reward accurate recall of a textbook. A PUC Chemistry paper can be prepared for by mastering one book; an IB Chemistry paper expects you to interpret data you have not seen and to comment on the limits of an experiment.

Structure differs too. In Karnataka a student leaves school after Class 10 and moves to a pre-university college for Class 11 and 12, a break that IB and CBSE students do not face. IB Diploma students stay on one syllabus throughout, with Theory of Knowledge, an Extended Essay and service hours running alongside six subjects.

Assessment weights differ as well. IGCSE leans on final papers with a coursework or practical element in some subjects, while the Diploma builds internal assessments into most subjects, each marked to a published rubric and moderated externally. Students used to a March board exam often underestimate how much of the IB grade is earned before the exam hall.

None of this makes one system superior. It means that a child switching between them needs deliberate bridging, particularly in command words and extended writing, and it is the reason a syllabus-specific tutor helps more than a general one.

03

What does IB or IGCSE tuition cost in Udupi, and what moves the rate?

  • Subject, level, tutor experience and session length drive the rate
  • Location inside the Udupi belt does not change the fee
  • The figure is confirmed in writing before the trial lesson
  • Pause or adjust with short notice; no long contract

IB Gram does not publish a price list, and the reason is practical: the fee depends on who is teaching what. A Higher Level Physics tutor with several years of Diploma experience sits in a smaller pool than a tutor for IGCSE Core Mathematics, and the quote reflects that. Session length, weekly frequency and the level of examiner-style feedback expected move the number too.

Where you live in the Udupi belt does not enter into it. A tutor teaching from Pune costs the same to a family in Manipal as to one in Malpe, because no travel is involved and the lesson is identical on either side of the screen. There is no petrol, no commute, no hourly charge for a teacher who spends half the evening on the road.

The rate for your child is quoted in writing before the trial lesson, so you decide with the figure in front of you, and it stays as agreed unless you ask to change the plan. If you prefer a different weekly load or want to pause over the monsoon or a family festival, a short notice is enough.

For comparison, families often think of local group tuition as cheaper per hour. That may be true, but a group class in Udupi will typically cover the state or CBSE syllabus and not the exact IB or IGCSE paper your child faces, so the cost that matters is the cost of preparing for the right exam.

04

Online tutor, local classes, private teacher or self-study: which suits an Udupi student?

  • Local coaching serves entrance exams, not IB or IGCSE papers
  • Private teachers rarely have recent IB or IGCSE classroom experience here
  • Self-study lacks outside feedback
  • Online matching removes the local supply limit

Udupi and Manipal have plenty of coaching for the entrance tests that Manipal's colleges and the wider engineering and medical market demand. Those batches are built around NEET, JEE and state common entrance patterns, which are a different kind of exam from an IB Chemistry paper or an IGCSE Extended Mathematics paper.

A private teacher visiting the house can be excellent for a Karnataka or CBSE syllabus, and some students in Manipal are taught by postgraduates from the campus. What is hard to find locally is a teacher who has recently taught the IB or IGCSE course to a class and understands its mark schemes from the inside.

Self-study works for the disciplined, especially in past-paper subjects such as IGCSE Mathematics. Where it struggles is in feedback: a student cannot easily see why an Internal Assessment draft keeps losing marks in the same criterion, or why a six-mark answer keeps earning three.

An online tutor fills both gaps. The match is on syllabus and level rather than distance, feedback is specific, and lessons fit around the school day. It does not replace the child's own effort, and it is not right for every learner; some do better with a quieter, slower rhythm.

Monsoon, festivals and exam sessions in the Udupi school year

  • Monsoon rain can interrupt connectivity; plan a spare slot
  • Janmashtami week and Paryaya day are natural pauses
  • IGCSE: May-June and October-November sessions
  • SSLC and PUC exams in March can clash with IB or IGCSE revision

The southwest monsoon defines the coast between June and September. Udupi district is among the wettest parts of Karnataka, with days of steady rain, flooded roads near rivers such as the Swarna and Sita, and the occasional power cut that takes out a home internet connection. A sensible plan keeps a spare slot each week and a phone hotspot ready.

Festivals shape the calendar too. Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated with special fervour in Udupi, with the Vittal Pindi procession the day after, and the biennial Paryaya changeover at the Krishna Matha fills the town's streets in January of alternate years. Ganesh Chaturthi, Deepavali and Christmas are also observed widely, and Manipal's student population follows the college calendar on top of all this.

Exam sessions follow the international timetable rather than the local one. Cambridge IGCSE has a main series in May and June and a smaller one in October and November; the IB Diploma sits in May, with a November session for some candidates. Karnataka's SSLC and PUC exams fall in March and April, which can collide with IB or IGCSE preparation for a child studying both.

Because the PUC and SSLC results season overlaps with IB and IGCSE revision, families with two children on different boards often ask for tutoring to be staggered so a household is not juggling two revision peaks at once.

Manipal, NITK and beyond: university pathways after IB or IGCSE

  • MAHE offers a wide set of courses; check each course's admission rules for IB and IGCSE
  • An AIU equivalence certificate is central for Indian admissions
  • JEE Main, NEET-UG and CUET-UG each have their own subject and syllabus rules
  • Predicted grades drive UK and Canadian offers

Few small towns in India sit next to a university as large as MAHE. Manipal offers medicine, dentistry, engineering, architecture, allied health, communication and management programmes, and its admission routes combine its own entrance processes with national ones. A student with an IB Diploma or IGCSE background should read the current prospectus carefully and confirm how the qualification is treated for each course.

For Indian admissions in general the key paper is the Association of Indian Universities equivalence certificate. IB and IGCSE students also need to check subject combinations: JEE Main eligibility and NEET-UG both look at the science subjects studied, and the national exams have their own syllabus that no Diploma course covers in full. CUET-UG is the route into central universities and some others, and its subject list differs from the IB group structure.

Abroad, offers from the UK are written in total IB points with named Higher Level subjects, American colleges read predicted grades as one part of a larger application, and Canadian and Australian universities publish their own conversion tables. IGCSE grades matter as evidence for a Diploma or A Level place and in some applications directly.

A tutor does not handle any of that paperwork. What a tutor can do is teach the subject well, raise a predicted grade where it is honestly attainable and build exam technique. Counselling on universities and visas belongs with the school, a counsellor or the universities themselves.

07

IB Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology: where Udupi students need help

  • Maths: choose AA or AI after a diagnostic, not on habit
  • Physics: practise with unfamiliar data, not only formulae
  • Chemistry HL: prepare early for organic mechanisms
  • Biology: drill command terms and the statistics for the investigation

Take Mathematics first. The choice between Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation is a Class 11 decision that is hard to reverse, and families around Manipal often make it with medicine or engineering in mind. AA suits algebra-comfortable students; AI suits those who prefer data, statistics and technology. A short diagnostic session before the choice often saves a term of regret.

In Physics the difficulty is rarely the content and usually the translation from a formula to a reasoned answer. Students coming from PUC Physics know Ohm's law well but stumble on questions that ask them to evaluate a design or explain an uncertainty. Practice with unfamiliar data is the fix.

Chemistry at Higher Level demands a jump when organic mechanisms and equilibrium arrive together. Students who found the first year straightforward may need targeted help precisely then. The Internal Assessment also rewards a clear research question and a method that controls variables.

Biology suits the many Udupi and Manipal students who think of medicine. The syllabus is content-heavy, but marks go to precision: using the command term asked, giving the specific term instead of a paraphrase, and supporting a conclusion with the right statistics in the investigation.

In all four, an examiner-style mark scheme is the teaching tool. A tutor who has marked or taught it repeatedly can show a student in twenty minutes what a year of reading might not.

08

Core or Extended: choosing an IGCSE tier for Udupi students

  • Core caps most grades; Extended keeps A* available
  • Aim for Extended in Maths and sciences if IB or A Level is next
  • Check board and syllabus code with the exam centre first
  • Private candidates should plan entry deadlines and practical arrangements early

Core papers cap the grade at a C in most subjects, while Extended papers open every grade from A* downward. That difference makes the Grade 9 tier decision one of the most consequential in the whole course, and it needs to be taken with the child's aims, not only current marks.

A student who might attempt the Diploma, or A Level Sciences, should almost always take Extended Mathematics and the sciences. The extra content is the very material that Higher Level courses assume. A child aiming for a non-science route might reasonably choose Core in some subjects to protect confidence and marks elsewhere.

Board choice adds a layer. Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel both run popular IGCSE options, with different syllabus codes, paper structures and grade descriptors. If a family is preparing privately, the exam centre's offerings decide which board is possible, and that should be settled before tutoring begins.

For Udupi students studying privately, the calendar matters as well. Entry deadlines for the May and June series are set well ahead, and practical or coursework components need to be arranged with the exam centre. A tutor can help with teaching and paper practice but cannot enter a student for the exam.

09

How are tutors matched to a student in Udupi?

  • Matching starts from programme, subject, level, exam session and the actual problem
  • Qualifications and recent syllabus experience are checked first
  • The free trial lesson decides the match
  • A tutor change is available at any time

We begin with a short conversation, not a form. Which programme or board, which subject and level, what the current grade is, what the target is and where the trouble sits: a topic, an Internal Assessment, a mock or a board switch. Those answers narrow the shortlist far better than a generic subject label.

Before a tutor is introduced, we check qualifications, recent teaching of that precise syllabus and how they approach guidance on assessed work. The Udupi context helps too: a tutor who understands what it is like to fit lessons around SSLC, PUC or CBSE hours, or to study privately with no school support, is a better fit than one who assumes a full IB campus.

The trial lesson does the rest. A child works through a real topic, and the family sees how the tutor explains, questions and listens. After it, a short plan for the first month is shared; a family can ask to change anything in it.

If it does not fit, we change the tutor. There is no penalty and no request to persevere with the wrong match.

Where we tutor

Neighbourhoods around Udupi our online students live in

Because lessons run over a screen, a locality tells us about school context and daily rhythm rather than travel. These are the parts of the Udupi and Manipal belt where families most often ask about international curricula, with a note on what the day looks like there.

Manipal

The university township around MAHE, with a large population of students, doctors and faculty; the likeliest place to meet families arriving from other boards or countries.

Kunjibettu

A residential stretch between Udupi city and Manipal, popular with families working at the hospital and college campuses.

Ambalpady

On the main road toward Kaup and Mangaluru, with easy access to both Udupi town and the highway.

Malpe

The fishing port and beach area; monsoon weeks here bring the heaviest rain and occasional power cuts, so evening lessons are planned with slack.

Brahmavar

A semi-urban town north of Udupi on the highway, home to many families with an eye on Gulf-linked or business careers.

Kapu (Kaup)

A coastal town south of Udupi known for its lighthouse; residents often commute north or south for work and study.

Santhekatte

A busy commercial junction close to the NH66 corridor, mixing older families with newer apartment residents.

Perampalli

A quieter residential area in the Manipal direction, close to several college hostels and paying-guest homes.

Kalyanpur

A growing suburb with newer housing, where parents often ask how to add an international syllabus to a local school day.

Karkala and Kundapura

Neighbouring taluks whose students also join lessons online; a longer trip to Udupi city makes an online tutor practical.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Udupi

Udupi and Manipal

Our checks of school directories found no IB World School or IGCSE centre here. Most students follow the Karnataka SSLC and PUC route or CBSE, and families wanting IB or IGCSE content add it through online tutoring or private candidacy.

    Nearby: Mangaluru

About sixty kilometres south, Mangaluru has a small group of Cambridge IGCSE schools that some Udupi families consider for a Grade 9 move.

    • The Bharath Academy
    • TLC Cambridge International School
    • The Cambridge International School, Adyar

    Nearby: Bengaluru

The state's IB and IGCSE schools are concentrated in Bengaluru, an overnight bus or a short flight away, and boarding there is a route Udupi families weigh for the Diploma years.

    • Stonehill International School
    • The International School Bangalore

No school inside the Udupi belt could be confirmed as offering the IB or Cambridge or Edexcel IGCSE, so none is named as such. The nearby-city schools below are mentioned only to describe the region's options, and none has any commercial link with IB Gram, which works on its own.

    Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Udupi: your questions answered

How do I find IB and IGCSE tutors in Udupi?+

Tell IB Gram the programme or board, subject, level and exam session, and we shortlist tutors who teach that exact course. Because no IB or IGCSE school in the Udupi belt could be confirmed, matching is based on syllabus fit rather than distance. A free trial lesson comes before any decision, so you judge by watching your child learn.

Is there an IB or IGCSE school in Udupi or Manipal?+

We could not confirm one. Searches of school directories for the Udupi belt returned no IB World School and no Cambridge or Edexcel IGCSE centre, and we would rather say so than guess. Families studying these courses do so through schools in Mangaluru or Bengaluru, as private candidates, or through boarding arrangements, and add online tuition for the subjects they find hardest.

Do tutors come to my home in Udupi?+

No. In-person home tuition is offered only in Gurugram and parts of Delhi NCR. In Udupi, what you get is online home tuition: a one-to-one live lesson your child takes from home on a laptop, with a shared digital whiteboard and past papers. It is private tuition from home in the sense of location, not a visit.

What does IB or IGCSE tuition cost in Udupi?+

The rate depends on the programme, subject, level, tutor experience and session length, and it is given to you in writing before the trial lesson. IB Higher Level sciences and Maths usually cost more than IGCSE Core because fewer specialists teach them. Your locality in Udupi makes no difference, as nobody travels.

Can you help a Manipal family whose child is mid-way through the IB Diploma?+

Yes. Families joining the MAHE campus often arrive in the middle of a course, and we match a tutor who has taught the same subjects and levels recently. The first two sessions usually map gaps against the syllabus so lessons can be aimed precisely, and the tutor works alongside the school your child attends rather than replacing it.

Which IB Diploma subjects can you cover for Udupi students?+

We cover Maths Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics, Business Management, English A, Computer Science, Psychology, ESS, Geography, History, Kannada B and Hindi B, plus Theory of Knowledge coaching. Level matters, so a Higher Level Chemistry tutor is chosen separately from a Standard Level one.

Do you teach IB MYP and PYP students in Udupi?+

Yes. MYP support tends to focus on criterion-based writing in the sciences and Language and Literature, plus the Personal Project process journal. PYP support covers reading, writing and number confidence. Both are delivered online in short, engaging sessions suited to the child's age, with a written note afterwards for parents.

Which IGCSE boards do you support?+

Both Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel. Cambridge syllabus codes such as 0580, 0625 and 0620 are the most requested, but Edexcel matches are available. Confirm your board and code with the school or exam centre first, since tutors prepare a child for the specific paper structure and grade descriptors.

Is online tutoring as effective as sitting with a tutor?+

For most IB and IGCSE students it works well, especially where local specialists are scarce. A shared whiteboard, screen-shared papers and recorded worked solutions cover much of what a teacher beside a child would do. It suits students who can focus on a screen for an hour, and we say so honestly if a younger child needs shorter sessions.

Can a tutor help with an Internal Assessment or Extended Essay?+

A tutor can help you plan and understand, never write. That covers choosing a workable research question, reading the assessment criteria, structuring data collection and giving honest feedback on drafts. Anything that amounts to producing assessed work would breach IB academic integrity rules, so tutors decline it.

How do the monsoon and power cuts affect online lessons?+

Heavy rain between June and September can cause short outages on the Udupi coast, so we keep a spare weekly slot and suggest a phone hotspot as backup. If a lesson is lost to a power cut, it is rescheduled at no extra cost. Families in low-lying areas near rivers plan a little extra slack in peak weeks.

When should my child start tutoring?+

Ideally at the start of the course: Grade 9 for IGCSE and Class 11 for the Diploma. That leaves time to build foundations before internal exams, IA deadlines and predicted grades. Starting later still helps, focusing on the highest-value topics and past papers, but early support gives the most room to move.

My child is moving from the Karnataka SSLC or CBSE to IGCSE. Can you help?+

Yes, this transition is one of the most common requests. The gap is usually in question style rather than content: command words, mark-scheme expectations and extended answers differ from what SSLC or CBSE papers reward. A tutor spends the first weeks on those habits, then builds subject depth.

Can my child study privately for IGCSE from Udupi?+

Cambridge and Pearson allow private candidates to enter through an approved exam centre, but the family must arrange the entry, the practical components and the centre's dates. IB Gram can teach the syllabus and give paper practice, though we cannot enter a student for an exam. Check availability with the centre well before entry deadlines.

Can lessons be scheduled around SSLC, PUC or CBSE school hours?+

Yes. Most Udupi families choose weekday evenings and weekend mornings, and we plan around school exam periods and festival days such as Janmashtami. Adding a second weekly slot before mocks or the May series is straightforward, and a lighter schedule can run in weeks when the school calendar is heavy.

What if we are not happy with the tutor?+

Tell us and we will find another. We review progress with families every few weeks and re-match whenever the fit is wrong. There are no long contracts, so pausing or stopping carries no penalty, and a trial that does not click simply leads to a different introduction.

Is IB Gram connected with any school, the IB, Cambridge or MAHE?+

No. IB Gram is independent and has no affiliation with any school, university, the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge University Press and Assessment or Pearson. References to Manipal or to other cities describe the region only. Tutors follow each syllabus as published and do not represent any institution.
