IB and IGCSE Tutors and Online Home Tuition in Sonepur

Private home tuition for the IB or a Cambridge IGCSE is not something a Sonepur parent can arrange by asking around the bazaar, and no tutor of ours will ever turn up at a door in Saran district. What a family on this bank of the Ganga can have instead is one-to-one teaching at home, delivered online, by somebody who has already taught the precise syllabus code your child is entered against. The specialist joins over video from wherever in India they live; your child stays put, a few minutes from Sonpur Junction.

  • The tutor is picked for the one thing that matters, the exact IB subject at the exact level, or the exact IGCSE board and tier your child sits
  • Teaching happens on a screen; a tutor arriving at the gate is something arranged only in Gurugram and pockets of Delhi NCR, never in Saran district
  • One full lesson, free, before any decision and with nothing owed if you stop there
  • Rates are told to you in writing first, and a short note lands after every class so a parent is never guessing
  • An independent tutoring service with no tie to the IB, Cambridge, Pearson or any school this page happens to mention

IB & IGCSE in Sonepur

An IB or IGCSE tutor for a town that has no IB or IGCSE school

Sonepur sits where the Gandak empties into the Ganga, roughly three kilometres from Hajipur and about twenty five from Patna, and the Digha-Sonpur rail-road bridge has made the capital feel closer every year since it opened. None of that proximity has produced a single school in Saran district teaching the International Baccalaureate or a Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel IGCSE course. So a household here that needs one of those syllabuses covered has to go looking outside the district, and that is the gap IB Gram fills: we arrange IB and IGCSE tutors in Sonepur by matching a student to a subject specialist anywhere in the country and teaching live over video, one student and one tutor per session.

A quick note on the name, because it trips up every search engine. This page is about Sonepur, also spelt Sonpur, the nagar panchayat in Saran district famous for the Hariharnath temple and the Harihar Kshetra cattle mela. It is not Sonipat in Haryana, which has its own page on this site, and it is not Subarnapur in western Odisha, which locals also call Sonepur. If you typed Sonepur and landed on tutor listings for a Haryana industrial town, that is why.

The families who contact us from here usually arrive by one of four routes. A railway officer posted to the Sonpur division has come back from a zone where the child attended a Cambridge school. A couple working in Patna has chosen to live on the quieter Saran side and wants the Diploma without boarding the child away. A relative has returned from the Gulf or Singapore mid-course. Or parents are simply thinking two years ahead, weighing whether to move a Class 8 child off the Bihar Board before Class 9 closes the door.

Everything is taught on a screen. Nobody visits a home in Sonepur for a lesson, and we will not pretend otherwise: those visits run in Gurugram and a handful of Delhi NCR neighbourhoods and nowhere else. Tutors explain, demonstrate, mark and give feedback. Writing any part of an Internal Assessment, an Extended Essay, a Theory of Knowledge essay or an IGCSE coursework piece is not something a tutor here will do, however close the deadline has come.

At a glance

  • IB PYP, MYP, Diploma and Career-related Programme subjects, plus Cambridge and Edexcel IGCSE
  • Live private lessons taken at home on a laptop, scheduled in Indian Standard Time
  • A tutor matched to the syllabus code, not to whoever happens to live in Saran
  • A free opening lesson, then a written plan and a rate confirmed before anything begins
  • No home visits anywhere in Sonepur; that arrangement exists only in Gurugram and parts of Delhi NCR
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to Sonepur school years

Because the programme itself is never taught locally, what shapes the teaching for a Sonepur child is how they came to be on it: a transfer mid-stream, a distance enrolment run from the dining table, a boarding term with holidays to work around, or a private-candidate registration. Each note below describes the version of the programme we actually meet in this town.

PYPNursery to Class 7, ages 3 to 12

IB Primary Years Programme

Learning sits inside broad units of inquiry rather than being carved into subject periods, and the last PYP year closes with a student-led Exhibition. Nothing is externally examined, so tutoring here is about reading stamina, number confidence and the habit of asking a question properly before chasing an answer.

Every PYP enquiry we have had from Sonepur involves keeping a programme alive that began in another city, usually after a posting brought the family back toward Patna.

MYPClass 6 to 10, ages 11 to 16

IB Middle Years Programme

Each subject is marked against four lettered criteria instead of a percentage, the Personal Project falls due near the end, and some schools finish with external eAssessment papers. The work that pays off is dragging a student from describing something to analysing it, which is what the criteria reward.

MYP students from Sonepur are almost always enrolled at a distance or boarding away, so keeping command of submission dates matters as much as command of the content.

DPClass 11 and 12, ages 16 to 19

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level and three at Standard, sit alongside Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. Internal Assessments typically carry somewhere between a fifth and a third of a subject grade, with written papers concentrated in a single session.

The Diploma requests we get from this side of the Ganga cluster hard around Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry at Higher Level, often from a student boarding in Kolkata or the Dehradun belt and studying through the Chhath and winter holidays at home.

CPClass 11 and 12, ages 16 to 19

IB Career-related Programme

A smaller, less familiar route that pairs two or more Diploma courses with a career-related study, a reflective project and a personal and professional skills component. Tutoring normally covers the Diploma subjects inside it and the written reflection that holds the rest together.

No school near Sonepur offers the Career-related Programme, so the handful of CP students we work with here are enrolled overseas or at a distance and need help with their Diploma courses specifically.

Subject coverage

IB subjects we tutor

A Sonepur student rarely needs every subject covered. Usually two are carrying the whole grade: the Higher Level science that has turned unfriendly, and Mathematics. These are the IB courses we are asked for from Saran district, with the levels and the part of each course that tends to cause trouble.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

SL and HL

Proof, calculus and the algebraic manipulation that Higher Level asks for without warning. Students arriving from a Bihar Board or CBSE background often know the methods but have never been asked to justify a step in writing, which is where marks leak.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

SL and HL

Statistics, modelling, financial mathematics and heavy use of a graphic display calculator. The exploration is the piece students underestimate most, and a good topic often comes out of something local, river levels, mela footfall, railway timetables.

Physics

SL and HL

Mechanics, fields, thermal physics and the Higher Level extensions, taught with the derivations written out rather than quoted. The practical write-up and uncertainty treatment get separate attention because they are marked separately.

Chemistry

SL and HL

Energetics, equilibrium, acids and bases and organic mechanisms, with the data booklet treated as a tool to practise with rather than a crutch. Most of our Sonepur Chemistry work is Higher Level and begins mid-year.

Biology

SL and HL

Cell biology, genetics, physiology and ecology, where the real skill is answering the command term asked rather than writing everything known about the topic. Useful for students keeping a medical option open alongside NEET preparation.

English A: Language and Literature

SL and HL

Textual analysis, the individual oral and the learner portfolio. Students from an English-medium Bihar school usually write fluently and still need to learn how the IB wants a close reading structured.

English B

SL and HL

For a student whose schooling ran mainly in Hindi before the switch: reading comprehension, the written assignment and spoken confidence built up without embarrassment.

Hindi A and Hindi B

SL and HL

Hindi is the working language of Sonepur and the medium of most schools around it, so a student keeping Hindi A as a literature course has a genuine advantage. Hindi B suits a returnee whose spoken Hindi outruns their written Devanagari.

Economics

SL and HL

Micro, macro, international and development economics, with the internal assessment commentaries built off real news articles. Bihar's agricultural economy and migration patterns supply more usable commentary material than most students expect.

Business Management

SL and HL

Organisational structure, marketing, finance and the business research project. A natural fit for students from Sonepur's trading and transport families who already understand a ledger.

Computer Science

SL and HL

Programming fundamentals, data structures, system design and the solution-development internal assessment, from a tutor who can read a student's actual code rather than just talk about it.

Geography

SL and HL

Freshwater, hazards, population and global interactions, plus the fieldwork write-up. A student living at a river confluence that floods most monsoons has a case study on the doorstep.

History

SL and HL

Source analysis, essay structure and the historical investigation. Bihar's own record, from the Magadha period through the 1934 earthquake that brought down the Hariharnath temple, offers investigation topics that are genuinely researchable.

Environmental Systems and Societies

SL and HL

Systems thinking, biodiversity, pollution and resource use, taken by many students as a lighter third science. The Ganga and Gandak catchments make the water-management units unusually concrete here.

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Core, all DP students

Narrowing a research question until it is answerable, building an argument and getting the referencing right. The tutor coaches and questions; the student writes every word that is submitted.

IGCSE coverage

IGCSE subjects we tutor

On the IGCSE side the two decisions that matter come early: whether a subject is taken at Core or Extended tier, and whether the entry is Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel. We teach both boards from the published specification for the student's own series, which matters because a Sonepur family is often working from whatever notes a previous school sent across.

Mathematics

Core and Extended, Cambridge and Edexcel

Number, algebra, geometry, trigonometry and probability, with the Extended tier adding functions, vectors and the harder algebra. Tier choice is worth settling properly rather than drifting into, since it caps the grade available.

Additional Mathematics

Cambridge, for stronger candidates

Calculus, series and more demanding algebra, taken alongside the main paper by students heading for Mathematics AA at Higher Level or an engineering path.

Physics

Core and Extended

Forces, energy, waves, electricity and the alternative-to-practical paper, which rewards experimental reasoning far more than memory and is where unprepared students lose most.

Chemistry

Core and Extended

Bonding, stoichiometry, rates, the periodic table and organic chemistry, taught with past-paper mark schemes open so a student sees how little is actually required for full marks.

Biology

Core and Extended

Cells, transport, coordination, inheritance and ecology, with diagram labelling and data interpretation drilled separately because they come up every series.

Combined and Coordinated Sciences

Double and single award

For a student taking the sciences as one or two subjects instead of three. The syllabus content differs genuinely from the separate papers, so it needs teaching as its own course.

English as a First Language and English as a Second Language

Core and Extended

Directed writing, composition, reading comprehension and the speaking component. Choosing between the two courses honestly, early, saves a student from a paper that is either too easy to score well on or too hard to finish.

Hindi as a Second Language and Hindi Literature

Cambridge

A sensible entry for a Sonepur student who speaks Hindi and Bhojpuri at home every day, provided the written Devanagari and the set-text analysis get proper practice.

Economics and Business Studies

Core and Extended

Markets, business structure, finance and the structured data-response questions. Both reward a student who can read a short case and answer only what was asked.

Computer Science and Information Technology

Core and Extended

Algorithms, pseudocode, data representation and practical application work, taught with the student writing and running code rather than copying it from notes.

Geography and History

Core and Extended

Case-study based papers where structure decides the grade. Both benefit from a tutor who insists on a plan before the first sentence of an answer gets written.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around Sonepur school timetables

There is one delivery method for Sonepur, a live video lesson on Indian time, because the lesson is online and no in-person alternative exists in Saran district. What a family actually chooses between is the shape of the engagement: a steady weekly rhythm, a whole course taught from the specification, or a tight run at a fixed deadline.

A fixed weekly hour, kept all year

Same tutor, same day, same time, screen shared throughout, set against whatever school day the household runs, local or across the river. Most Sonepur families settle here within a fortnight of the trial and stay for the full academic year.

  • The subject specialist is chosen on expertise, with distance irrelevant
  • Works identically for Diploma, MYP and both IGCSE boards
  • Past papers marked live, on screen, while the student watches the reasoning
  • A wet monsoon week or a blocked bridge approach cancels nothing

A whole course taught for a private candidate

For the student who is not enrolled at any school teaching the syllabus: the tutor works through the full published specification in order, schedules past papers across the year and explains how an entry is made at an approved Cambridge or Edexcel centre, which for Bihar means travelling to sit the papers.

  • Built from the specification for the student's own exam series, not generic notes
  • A calendar laid out from first topic to final paper
  • Clear guidance on which components a private candidate can and cannot enter
  • Honest about the fact that no exam centre sits in Saran district

A short intensive before a deadline

Two or three shorter sessions a week instead of one long block when an Internal Assessment is due, mocks are next week or the May papers are close. It ends when the deadline passes and the rhythm drops back to normal.

  • Timed past-paper practice rather than open-ended revision
  • Marking returned fast enough to change something before the next sitting
  • Used heavily by boarders home in Sonepur over the winter holidays
  • No long commitment; it exists for a fixed stretch and then stops
Verified tutors

IB and IGCSE tutors available to students in Sonepur

The people who teach IB and IGCSE tutors in Sonepur enquiries are subject specialists rather than general tutors: a Chemistry Higher Level tutor who has marked that paper, an Extended-tier Mathematics tutor who knows how Cambridge words a question. All of them work in Indian Standard Time, which removes the one problem families abroad complain about most, and all of them teach from the specification your child is actually entered against.

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Sonepur

01

Who in Sonepur actually ends up on an IB or IGCSE syllabus?

  • Railway transfer families, the largest single group in this town
  • Patna-employed parents living on the Saran side by choice
  • Returnees from abroad with a child part-way through an IGCSE
  • Bihar Board families planning a switch before Class 9 closes it off
  • Boarders home for Chhath, Kartik Purnima or the winter break

Four kinds of household, mostly. Railway families posted into the Sonpur division whose children attended an international-curriculum school in a previous zone. Professionals employed in Patna who prefer living on the Saran bank and refuse to board a sixteen year old away. Returnees from the Gulf, Singapore or East Africa whose child is mid-IGCSE and cannot restart. And forward-looking Bihar Board parents in Class 7 or 8 who have worked out that the switch gets much harder after Class 9 begins.

What unites them is that none of them can solve the problem by changing schools within the district. Sonepur's schooling is Bihar Board and CBSE, and the private English-medium schools around the bazaar and in Nayagaon follow the same two systems. The nearest confirmed Cambridge stream is a bridge crossing away in Danapur, and the nearest authorised IB schools are states away. That is a different situation from a Pune or Hyderabad parent choosing between six local campuses.

The practical consequence is that tutoring is not a supplement here, it is the delivery mechanism. A student enrolled at a distance with a provider, or registered as a Cambridge private candidate, is relying on a tutor for the actual teaching rather than for revision help. We set expectations accordingly: a full-course engagement is a year of work, not six weeks before a paper.

There is also a steady trickle of enquiries from Sonepur households whose child is already boarding in Kolkata or the Dehradun belt. Those families want continuity through the holidays, somebody who can pick up a half-finished Internal Assessment during the Chhath break and hand it back on track before the term resumes.

02

Bihar Board, CBSE, ICSE, IB or IGCSE: what really changes for a Sonepur household?

The honest answer is that three things change: who decides the grade, when the exams fall, and how much of the year is coursework. The Bihar Board decides almost everything through written papers in February and March. A Cambridge IGCSE splits the decision across tiers, components and two separate exam windows. The IB Diploma moves a serious fraction of the grade into work your child produces and submits across two years. Fees and availability change too, but those three are what reorganise family life.

For a Sonepur parent the second of those, timing, matters more than it sounds. The Bihar Board calendar is woven into the district's year, so a cousin in a BSEB school sits papers while an IGCSE candidate is still months from a May series. Households running two systems under one roof end up managing two completely different pressure cycles, and that is worth planning for rather than discovering.

The third, coursework weighting, is where students transferring in struggle most. A child who has been rewarded for reproducing a full answer has to learn to answer a command term precisely and to carry a long piece of independent work to a deadline with nobody chasing them weekly. That transition takes a term of deliberate work, and it is the single most useful thing a tutor does in the first year after a switch.

None of this makes one system better than another. A Bihar Board student aiming at state medical counselling is on a perfectly sensible route. The comparison below is for the family that already has a reason to move, not an argument that they should.

How the systems a Sonepur family might choose actually differ

03

What drives the cost of IB or IGCSE tuition for a family here?

We do not publish a price, and the reason is not coyness: the same subject can cost materially different amounts depending on the level, the deadline and how many hours a week it needs. What we do is quote the rate in writing after the free trial lesson, once a tutor has seen the work and can say honestly how long the job will take. Nobody is asked to commit before that number exists.

The biggest single driver is level. A Diploma Higher Level science or Mathematics AA at Higher Level needs a tutor who can teach the Higher Level extensions properly, and those tutors are scarcer than ones who can handle Standard Level or an IGCSE Core paper. The second driver is time pressure. A plan agreed in June and run steadily to April costs a family less per month than the same content compressed into eight weeks before a May series.

Sonepur families often compare our figure against what a local coaching batch charges, which is a reasonable instinct and a misleading comparison. A JEE or NEET batch in Patna is shared across a room and teaches a different syllabus entirely. The nearest honest comparison is the cost of boarding a child in Kolkata or the Dehradun belt for two years, against which a weekly online hour is modest.

One more thing worth saying plainly: nothing on our side charges for travel, because nothing travels. There is no conveyance element in the rate for a Sonepur student, no minimum number of hours to make a trip across the bridge worthwhile, and no surcharge for living in Saran district rather than a metro.

Online one-to-one, a Patna coaching centre, a local private tutor or self-study

Every Sonepur family we speak to has already considered at least two of these, so it is worth setting them side by side honestly rather than pretending only one exists. Each works for something. The point is that only one of them actually teaches an IB or Cambridge syllabus to a student living in Saran district.

Coaching centres deserve real respect here. Bihar's coaching culture is serious, disciplined and very effective at what it targets, which is JEE, NEET and the state competitive examinations. A Sonepur student crossing to a Patna batch gets method, speed and peer pressure of a kind an online hour cannot replicate. What that batch does not do is teach Internal Assessment criteria, command terms, Core versus Extended tiering or Theory of Knowledge.

A private tutor found locally has the opposite profile: present, affordable, familiar with the child, and almost certainly unfamiliar with a criterion-marked MYP script or an Extended-tier Cambridge mark scheme. We have never met one in Saran district who has taught either, and a tutor learning the syllabus alongside the student is a poor use of a year.

Self-study from the published specification is more viable than people assume, especially for a motivated IGCSE candidate with good English. What it lacks is marking. A student cannot reliably tell whether their own answer would earn the marks, and that single blind spot is what keeps capable self-studiers two grades below where their knowledge sits.

Four routes a Sonepur household has tried, and where each stops working
RouteWhat it genuinely givesWhere it falls short from Sonepur
Live online one-to-oneA tutor who has taught the exact syllabus code, on IST, with the student at the family's own tableNeeds a dependable connection and a parent willing to defend the slot from everything else

Self-study from the specificationFree, flexible, and workable for a disciplined readerNo marking, no feel for command terms, and a wrong method can go uncorrected for months
05

The IB and IGCSE exam calendar set against Sonepur's own year

Two exam seasons govern an international-curriculum student: a May and June cluster and an October and November cluster. Cambridge and Edexcel run series in both; the IB Diploma has a May session and a November session, and which one a student sits depends on their school's hemisphere and calendar, not on where the family lives.

Laid over that, Sonepur has a year of its own that no planning document will tell you about. The monsoon runs roughly June to September and both rivers rise, which is exactly when a new Diploma year starts and Internal Assessment topics get chosen. Chhath takes over the ghats in late autumn. Then Kartik Purnima opens the Harihar Kshetra mela, and for anything from a fortnight to a month the town is given over to the cattle fair, the crowds and the ceremonial bathing at the confluence.

The mela collides directly with the October and November exam series, and pretending otherwise causes more damage than planning around it. Our approach is to front-load that content into September, keep the mela fortnight light or shift it to early mornings, and resume properly in December. Families who try to hold a normal schedule through Kartik Purnima almost always lose the sessions anyway.

Winter is the productive stretch here, and it is also when boarders come home. December and January are when mocks land, predicted grades get set and draft Internal Assessments need real attention, and a student home in Sonepur for the break can do a term's worth of catching up in three focused weeks if the plan is ready before they arrive.

The exam seasons against Sonepur's calendar

06

Where does a Sonepur student go after the Diploma or IGCSE?

  • AIU equivalence for Indian university admission with an IB Diploma
  • CUET-UG open to Diploma holders for central university places
  • JEE and NEET eligibility decided by subject combination, not by board
  • Jai Prakash University in Chhapra and Patna's colleges for students staying in Bihar
  • Direct reading of the Diploma by universities overseas, with IGCSE grades often requested as well

Three directions, and all three are open. Indian universities accept the IB Diploma through the Association of Indian Universities equivalence process, which a student applies for once results are out and which Indian institutions ask to see. With that in hand a Diploma holder can sit CUET-UG for central university admission in Delhi, Banaras Hindu University or elsewhere, exactly as a CBSE candidate does.

For the engineering and medical routes that most of Bihar aims at, the eligibility rules are about subjects rather than board. JEE Main and Advanced require Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics at Class 12 level, so a Diploma student needs those three in their six, and NEET requires Physics, Chemistry and Biology. A student who drops one of them at Class 11 to balance their Diploma has quietly closed a door, which is why subject selection deserves a serious conversation before Class 11 rather than after.

Closer to home, Jai Prakash University at Chhapra is the state university for Saran district and Patna's colleges are a short crossing away, and both take students through the ordinary Bihar admission processes. An international-curriculum student applying to them should get the equivalence paperwork started early, because it is the step that delays admissions rather than the marks themselves.

The third direction is abroad, which is usually why a family looked at the IB in the first place. The Diploma is read directly by universities in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Europe and the United States without any equivalence step, and a Sonepur student with a strong Higher Level profile is judged on the same scale as one from a metro. IGCSE grades matter here too, since UK applications routinely ask for them alongside later qualifications.

07

IB Mathematics AA and AI, and the three sciences, taught across a river

  • Analysis and Approaches against Applications and Interpretation, decided on evidence rather than reputation
  • Written justification drilled until it becomes automatic
  • Higher Level extensions in Physics, Chemistry and Biology taught as their own body of work
  • Internal assessment designed and marked against the published criteria, written by the student alone
  • Clear limits stated about laboratory work for distance-enrolled students

Mathematics is the subject that brings most Sonepur families to us, and the first job is almost always to establish that Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation are genuinely different courses rather than a hard and an easy version of one. AA is proof, calculus and algebraic structure. AI is modelling, statistics and sustained calculator work. A student strong at manipulation and weak at interpreting a context is miserable in AI, and the reverse is just as true.

Students arriving from a Bihar Board or CBSE background usually bring more technique than the IB expects and less justification than it demands. They can solve the integral and lose marks for not showing why a substitution was legitimate. Rebuilding that habit takes a few weeks of writing solutions out properly, under a tutor who stops the student mid-line and asks for the reason.

In the sciences the Higher Level extensions are where the real work sits, and the internal assessment is where the marks are most winnable. A single scientific investigation, planned and written by the student, carries a meaningful share of the grade and is marked on method and reasoning rather than on getting a textbook result. We coach the design, question the method and mark the draft against the criteria; the student does every piece of the writing.

Practical work is the obvious worry for a student not sitting in a school laboratory, and it is a legitimate one. A tutor cannot run an experiment for a distance-enrolled student. What a tutor can do is prepare the student thoroughly for data analysis, uncertainty treatment and the alternative-to-practical style questions, and be honest with the family that the laboratory component has to come from the enrolling school or provider.

08

IGCSE Core or Extended, and the subject slate a Sonepur student should pick

  • Tier recommended from marked work, early, and put in writing
  • Taught from the specification for the student's own board and series
  • Hindi treated as a real subject strength for a Saran district student
  • A slate that keeps the Diploma, CUET-UG and overseas routes all open
  • Exam centre travel and registration deadlines flagged at the start, not at the end

The tier decision comes first and it is more consequential than most families realise. Core papers cap the attainable grade, Extended papers open the higher grades and cover extra content. A student who drifts into Core because it looks safer and then needs a strong grade for a Diploma entry or an overseas application has a genuine problem that cannot be fixed in the final term. We look at marked work and make a recommendation early, in writing.

Board choice usually comes down to what the enrolling school or the exam centre offers rather than preference. Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel both produce respected IGCSE qualifications with different paper structures, different coursework options and different availability of subjects. We teach from the specification for the student's actual board and series, which is not a detail: question styles and command terms differ enough to matter in a timed paper.

On the subject slate, a Sonepur student has one real advantage worth using. Hindi is spoken at home and taught at every school around them, and Bhojpuri is the everyday language of the district, so a Hindi entry is an honest strength rather than a filler. Mathematics, two or three sciences, English and Hindi, plus one humanity and one of Business Studies, Economics or Computer Science, makes a defensible slate that keeps both the Diploma and an Indian route open.

The practical complication nobody mentions until late is the exam centre. There is no Cambridge or Edexcel examination centre in Saran district, so a private candidate from Sonepur travels to sit papers, with registration deadlines that fall months before the series. We raise this at the start of a full-course engagement rather than in March, because the logistics need planning alongside the teaching.

09

What a railway posting does to a child's curriculum

Sonpur Junction is a divisional headquarters of East Central Railway, and that fact shapes this town's relationship with international education more than anything else about it. Officers and staff move between divisions and zones on a cycle measured in years, and a child moves with them. A posting to a metro can mean two years at a Cambridge school; the posting back to Sonpur means a syllabus the local schools cannot continue.

This is the single most common story we hear from here, and it has a predictable shape. The child is mid-MYP or part-way through IGCSE. The receiving school, if the family even enrols locally, runs CBSE. Nobody wants a repeated year. What the family needs is for the original syllabus to keep running through a tutor while the transfer settles, and a clear decision about whether to complete it as a private candidate, enrol with a distance provider or convert to CBSE and accept the loss.

We do not push a single answer, because the right one depends on how far through the course the child is and what comes next. A child eighteen months from an IGCSE series usually finishes it. A child two months into Grade 9 with no overseas plan is often better off converting cleanly. A child aiming at a Diploma afterwards should keep the international track alive, because entering the Diploma from a CBSE Class 10 is possible but adds a layer of adjustment to an already demanding two years.

What tutoring can promise in all three cases is continuity while the decision is being made. A fortnightly review and a written note after each lesson give a transferring parent something concrete to judge by during exactly the period when everything else in their life is in boxes.

Running a live lesson from Sonepur: the practical side

  • A fixed line as the main connection, a mobile hotspot on another network as monsoon backup
  • An inverter or a charged device so a power cut pauses rather than ends a lesson
  • Later evening slots for children commuting across the river, earlier ones for local schools
  • Mornings for boarders home over Chhath, Kartik Purnima or the winter break
  • Handwritten work photographed and sent before the lesson so no time goes on diagnosis

A lesson needs three things in this town: a connection that holds, a corner where a child is not interrupted, and a slot that survives the actual shape of the day. The first is the one families ask about and usually the least troublesome. A fixed line or fixed wireless connection handles a video lesson with a shared screen comfortably, and a mobile hotspot on a second network is a sensible fallback during heavy monsoon weeks when something will eventually go down.

Power is the real variable, more so than bandwidth. An inverter or a charged laptop covers a cut mid-lesson, and we would rather a student rejoin ten minutes later than lose the session. Tutors keep a record of where the lesson stopped so the restart is not a restart at all. Nothing is charged for a session a power failure cut short on our side of the arrangement.

The slot itself takes the most thought. A child doing the daily crossing to a Danapur or Patna school is rarely home before five and is tired when they are, so a seven o'clock hour works better than squeezing one in at half past five. A child at a local Sonepur school has a much earlier afternoon available. For boarders home on holiday we often run mornings, which nobody expects to work and which turns out to be the most productive hour of the day.

Equipment is deliberately minimal. A laptop or tablet with a working microphone, a notebook and the student's own textbook or specification printout are enough. A cheap writing tablet helps in Mathematics and the sciences, and a phone camera photographing handwritten work before the lesson lets a tutor arrive already knowing where the problem is.

Where we tutor

Sonepur, its wards and the places families commute to

Sonepur is a small, dense nagar panchayat with the river on two sides, a large railway settlement and a fairground that swallows the town for a month every autumn. None of it has an IB or IGCSE classroom, so the practical question for a parent is always about timing: when the child gets home, when the bridge traffic clears, and which weeks of the year are simply unavailable. Here is how that plays out across the town and its immediate neighbours.

Sonpur Junction and the railway settlement

The divisional headquarters quarters and the colony around them hold most of the transferable families in town, which is why this pocket produces more IB and IGCSE enquiries than the rest of Sonepur combined. Children here often come back from a posting elsewhere already part-way through a Cambridge or IB course. Evening slots after 6 pm work well; shift timings in the household are the only real constraint.

Hariharnath temple and Kali Ghat

The old core of the town, tight lanes running down to the water, busiest at dawn and on every Kartik Purnima. Families living here tend to be long-settled traders and temple-linked households. Lessons schedule easily except during the Ganga snan days and the mela opening, when the whole area is impassable.

The Harihar Kshetra mela ground

Empty most of the year and then the centre of Asia's largest cattle fair for anything from a fortnight to a month from Kartik Purnima onward. Households anywhere near it lose quiet, parking and sometimes power stability during that stretch, so we move lessons to early morning or pause them by agreement rather than fight it.

Pahleza Ghat and the riverfront

The historic crossing point to Patna before the bridges, still a reference point for everyone in town. Riverside households feel the monsoon first when the Ganga and Gandak run high, and that is exactly when a lesson that needs no travel earns its keep.

The Digha-Sonpur bridge approach

The road up to Jayaprakash Setu is the artery for anyone doing the daily Patna run, and the families who use it most are the ones whose children attend school across the river. Pickup is rarely before 4.30 pm and the return depends entirely on bridge traffic, so a 7 pm slot holds up better than a 5.30 pm one.

Nayagaon

A large panchayat and station stop on the Sonpur side, more agricultural than the town centre, with schooling running on the Bihar Board and a few CBSE private schools. Connectivity is adequate for a video lesson and a wired or fixed wireless line is worth having as the monsoon backup.

Hasilpur and Dumri Bujurg

Panchayats inside Sonpur block where families are more likely to be weighing a CBSE move than an IGCSE one. We still get occasional enquiries here from households with a child boarding away, and the plan tends to be built around term holidays rather than weekly slots.

Dighwara

The next town west along the line toward Chhapra, close enough that families treat it and Sonepur as one catchment. No international-curriculum school here either, and the same rail connection to Patna shapes the day.

Parsa and the Sonpur subdivision villages

Further into the block, where the Bihar Board is the default and English-medium private schooling is the ambitious choice. An online tutor is not an alternative to a local option here; it is the only option, and we say that plainly.

Across the Gandak: Hajipur

Barely three kilometres away and the headquarters of East Central Railway, so the two towns share a professional population and a school market. Hajipur has its own page on this site, and families often look at both towns' options together when a child is changing systems.

Across the Ganga: Digha and Danapur, Patna

The nearest realistic day-school route for a Cambridge IGCSE stream, roughly fifteen to twenty kilometres once the bridge is crossed. Several Sonepur families do this run daily, which leaves a tired child and a short evening, so tuition here is deliberately kept to one focused hour.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Sonepur

Sonepur and Sonpur subdivision

No school in Sonepur, Dighwara, Parsa or anywhere else in Saran district is confirmed to teach the IB or a Cambridge or Edexcel IGCSE course. Schooling here runs on the Bihar School Examination Board with CBSE in the private and railway-linked schools, so a local switch into an international curriculum is simply not available. We would rather say so than list a school that does not offer it.

    Nearby: Danapur, Patna

Roughly fifteen to twenty kilometres once the Digha-Sonpur bridge is crossed, Vidya Sanskar School in Danapur is the nearest school we have been able to confirm running Cambridge IGCSE at Grade 10 alongside its main CBSE stream. It is a genuine day option for a Sonepur household willing to do the crossing twice a day.

    • Vidya Sanskar School

    Nearby: Patna city

Bihar's capital is twenty five kilometres away and has by far the largest school market in the state, yet we could not independently confirm an IB World School anywhere in it. Moving across the river therefore solves a commute, not the curriculum problem, and families wanting the full Diploma still look much further afield.

      Nearby: Kolkata

The closest city with a settled cluster of authorised IB and Cambridge schools, an overnight train from Sonpur Junction. It is the usual choice for Saran families who want a child boarding somewhere they can reach in a single journey during the Chhath and winter breaks.

      • The Heritage School, Kolkata
      • Calcutta International School

Nearby: Delhi NCR and the Mussoorie boarding belt

Where Bihar families with relatives in the north most often board a child specifically for the Diploma. Woodstock School in Mussoorie is an authorised IB World School for the Middle Years and Diploma programmes, and Delhi and Gurugram between them hold the widest choice of IB schools in northern India.

      • The British School, New Delhi
      • Pathways World School, Gurugram
      • Woodstock School, Mussoorie

Every school, board and examining body named on this page is mentioned for context only. IB Gram runs as an independent tutoring service with no partnership, approval, agency or endorsement from the International Baccalaureate Organization, Cambridge Assessment International Education, Pearson Edexcel, the Bihar School Examination Board or any school listed here. We do not place students in schools and we do not act for them.

      How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

      1. 01

Tell us what your child is actually sitting

A message on WhatsApp at +91 7439 368 115 or an email to support@ibgram.com with the programme, the subject, the level or tier and the exam series. If you have a report or a marked script, send a photograph of it; it tells us more in thirty seconds than a long conversation does.

      2. 02

We match a tutor to the syllabus, not to the city

Because nobody travels to Sonepur for this, the tutor is selected purely on having taught that course. For a Higher Level science or Extended-tier Mathematics that search is narrower and may take a day or two longer, and we would rather take the extra day than send the wrong person.

      3. 03

Take a free lesson and watch it properly

A genuine lesson on a real topic, not a sales call. Sit in if you want to. At the end the tutor says what they found and what they would do about it, and if the fit is wrong you have lost an hour and nothing more.

      4. 04

Agree a plan, a slot and a rate in writing

A short written plan covering the topics, the weekly hour and the rate, which is quoted before anything starts rather than after. The slot gets set around the household's real day, including the crossing time if your child studies across the Ganga.

      5. 05

Keep it under review, and change the tutor if needed

A written note follows every lesson and a fuller review comes every few weeks, with the plan adjusted around the mela fortnight, Chhath and the exam calendar. If the fit is wrong, say so and we change the tutor; nobody should be persisting with a mismatch out of politeness.

      Why families choose us

What Sonepur parents tell us matters most

Honest about what Saran district actually has

No invented school list and no claim of local coverage. There is no IB or Cambridge school in Sonepur, no exam centre in the district and no tutor at your door here, and we would rather you read that on this page than discover it after paying someone.

A specialist for the exact course

Matching is done on the syllabus code, the level and the board. A Chemistry Higher Level tutor who has marked that paper is a different person from a general science tutor, and for a Diploma student that difference shows up in the grade.

      Built for a transferring family

This town's defining situation is a posting that moves a child between systems. We are used to picking up a half-finished MYP year or an interrupted IGCSE and keeping it running while the family decides what to do next.

      Scheduled around Sonepur's real year

The Kartik Purnima mela, Chhath week, the monsoon rise on both rivers and the bridge traffic all get planned for instead of ignored. Content moves forward or back so the weeks the town stops do not cost the student a term.

      Nothing hidden about money

No published price because the honest figure depends on level and deadline, and no vague answer either: a rate in writing after the free lesson, no travel element since nothing travels, and no surcharge for being in Bihar rather than a metro.

      Coaching, never ghostwriting

Tutors teach, question, mark and give feedback. They will not write or rewrite a line of an Internal Assessment, an Extended Essay, a Theory of Knowledge essay or an IGCSE coursework submission, and a tutor who offered to would not be working with us.

      Student and parent reviews

      Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Sonepur: your questions answered

Do you have IB and IGCSE tutors in Sonepur itself?+

Not living in Sonepur, no, and we will not pretend otherwise. There is no IB or Cambridge school in Saran district, so there is no local pool of tutors who have taught these courses. What a Sonepur family gets is a specialist from elsewhere in India who has taught the exact subject and level, teaching live over video on Indian Standard Time. The teaching is one to one and the student sits at home; only the tutor is somewhere else.

Will a tutor come to my house in Sonepur for home tuition?+

No. In-person home visits are offered only in Gurugram and parts of Delhi NCR, and nowhere in Bihar. A student in Sonepur gets private one-to-one tuition at home taught online, which is a real alternative rather than a compromise: the lesson is live, the tutor sees the student's work on a shared screen, and no time is lost to travel on either side.

Is this page about Sonepur in Bihar or Sonipat in Haryana?+

This page is about Sonepur, also spelt Sonpur, in Saran district, Bihar: the town at the Ganga and Gandak confluence with the Hariharnath temple and the Harihar Kshetra cattle mela. Sonipat in Haryana is a separate city with its own page on this site, and Subarnapur in Odisha is also locally called Sonepur. Search engines mix all three up constantly, so if you wanted the Haryana city you are in the wrong place.

Is there any IB or IGCSE school near Sonepur?+

The nearest school we have been able to confirm is in Danapur, across the Ganga in Patna district, which runs Cambridge IGCSE at Grade 10 alongside its main CBSE stream. That is roughly fifteen to twenty kilometres once the Digha-Sonpur bridge is crossed. We could not confirm an authorised IB World School anywhere in Bihar, which is why Sonepur families wanting the full Diploma usually look at Kolkata, Delhi NCR or the Mussoorie boarding belt.

What does IB or IGCSE tuition cost for a Sonepur family?+

The rate is quoted in writing after the free trial lesson, once a tutor has seen the work and can judge how long the job takes. We do not publish a figure because the same subject costs differently at Standard and Higher Level, and a plan run steadily from June costs less per month than the same content compressed before a May series. There is no travel component in the rate for Sonepur and no surcharge for the location.

Can my child sit Cambridge IGCSE exams from Sonepur?+

Not in Sonepur or anywhere in Saran district, since no Cambridge or Edexcel examination centre sits here. A private candidate registers through an approved centre elsewhere and travels to sit the papers, with registration deadlines that fall months ahead of the series. We raise this at the start of a full-course engagement, because the travel and the paperwork need planning alongside the teaching rather than discovering in March.

My child is mid-IGCSE after a railway transfer back to Sonpur. What now?+

This is the most common situation we handle from this town. The decision depends on how far through the course your child is: with a series eighteen months away, finishing as a private candidate or through a distance provider usually makes sense, while two months into Grade 9 with no overseas plan often argues for a clean conversion to CBSE. A tutor can keep the original syllabus running while you decide, so nothing is lost either way.

Which IB subjects do Sonepur students ask for most?+

Mathematics first, by a wide margin, split between Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation. Then Physics and Chemistry at Higher Level, then Biology for students keeping a medical route open. English A comes up for students who write fluently but have never been taught how the IB wants a close reading structured, and Hindi A is an honest strength for a student from this district rather than a soft option.

Do you teach the IGCSE Core or the Extended tier?+

Both, and we will give you a view on which your child should sit, in writing and early. Core caps the grade available; Extended covers extra content and opens the higher grades. Drifting into Core because it looks safer and then needing a strong grade for a Diploma entry or an overseas application is a problem that cannot be fixed in the final term, so the decision is made from marked work rather than from a guess.

How do you schedule lessons around the Sonepur mela and Chhath?+

By planning for them instead of pretending they are normal weeks. The Harihar Kshetra mela opens on Kartik Purnima and can fill the town for a month, which collides directly with the October and November exam series, so we front-load that content into September, keep the mela fortnight light or shift it to early mornings, and resume properly in December. Chhath week is treated the same way.

Can an IB Diploma student from Sonepur sit JEE or NEET?+

Yes, and eligibility turns on subjects rather than board. JEE Main and Advanced require Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics at Class 12 level, so those three need to be among the Diploma's six subjects, and NEET requires Physics, Chemistry and Biology. A student who drops one of them in Class 11 to balance their workload has quietly closed a door, which is why the subject conversation belongs before Class 11 and not after it.

Will Indian universities accept an IB Diploma from a Bihar student?+

Yes, through the Association of Indian Universities equivalence process, which a student applies for once results are published and which Indian institutions ask to see. With that in hand a Diploma holder can sit CUET-UG for central university admission exactly as a CBSE candidate does, and can apply to Jai Prakash University in Chhapra or Patna's colleges through the ordinary processes. Start the equivalence paperwork early, because it is the step that delays admissions.

Will a tutor help write my child's Internal Assessment or Extended Essay?+

No, and that is a firm limit rather than a policy on paper. A tutor will help narrow a research question, question a method, explain what each criterion actually rewards, read a draft and mark it honestly against the published descriptors. Writing or rewriting any part of the submitted text is academic misconduct and puts a student's whole Diploma at risk, so nobody here will do it however close the deadline is.

What happens if the internet or power fails during a lesson in Sonepur?+

The tutor notes where the lesson stopped and waits. A student rejoining ten minutes later picks up from that point rather than starting over, and a session genuinely cut short by a power failure is not charged. An inverter or a charged laptop plus a mobile hotspot on a second network handles almost everything the monsoon throws at a connection here, and heavy rain weeks are when a lesson needing no travel is worth most.

My child studies across the river in Patna and gets home late. Does that work?+

It works better than most families expect, provided the slot is set honestly. A child doing the daily crossing is rarely home before five and is tired when they are, so a seven o'clock hour holds up far better than a squeezed half past five. We fix one focused hour rather than two tired ones, and shift it later during bridge-traffic months rather than losing the session altogether.

Can you teach a PYP or MYP child, or only Diploma students?+

All of them. PYP work from Sonepur is about reading stamina, number confidence and the research habits an Exhibition eventually needs, since nothing in the PYP is externally examined. MYP work is mostly about moving a student from describing to analysing, which is what the four lettered criteria reward, and about keeping command of submission deadlines when the enrolment is at a distance or the child is boarding away.

How do we start, and what do we need to have ready?+

Message +91 7439 368 115 on WhatsApp or write to support@ibgram.com with the programme, subject, level or tier and exam series, and photograph a recent report or marked script if you have one. We find a tutor who has taught that course, you take a free lesson and judge it, then a plan, a slot and a rate are confirmed in writing. A laptop, a notebook and the specification are all the equipment needed.

      Flag of Sonepur

Start with one free lesson, taken at your own table in Sonepur

No school in Saran district teaches the IB or a Cambridge IGCSE, and no tutor is going to appear at a Sonepur gate, because those visits happen only in Gurugram and parts of Delhi NCR. What is genuinely available is this: a tutor who has taught your child's exact subject at your child's exact level, teaching live over video on Indian Standard Time, with the mela fortnight, Chhath and the bridge crossing all built into the schedule rather than wished away. Send a WhatsApp message to +91 7439 368 115 or an email to support@ibgram.com telling us the programme, the subject, the level and the exam series, and photograph a marked script if one is to hand. We find the right person, you take a full free lesson and judge it for yourself, and only then does a rate get agreed in writing. That is how IB and IGCSE tutors in Sonepur are arranged here, and if the fit turns out to be wrong you say so and we change the tutor.
