IB & IGCSE in Sherghati

IB and IGCSE tutors in Sherghati, working to your child's exam calendar

A study year in Sherghati is shaped by things no syllabus document mentions. February swallows attention twice over, once for Saraswati Puja and once because every neighbour's child is sitting a Bihar Board paper and the whole bazaar talks of nothing else. May and June bring the kind of heat Gaya district is known for, the sort that makes an afternoon of Chemistry revision a losing battle. Late October or November empties the house for Chhath. September fills the Gaya road with pilgrims arriving for the Pitripaksh fortnight. An IB or IGCSE child here is on an exam timetable set in Cardiff or Cambridge, and those two calendars do not consult each other.

That mismatch is the practical reason a family in this town looks for a tutor at all. A Diploma candidate has internal assessment deadlines falling in the weeks when her cousins are free and loud. An IGCSE student taking the May series has to peak in April, which is precisely when the mercury starts climbing and the power supply gets temperamental. Somebody has to build a revision plan around all of that rather than ignore it, and a tutor who lives on this calendar is better placed to do it than a generic worksheet pack.

Sherghati is a town on the old Grand Trunk Road in Gaya district, a subdivisional headquarters of about forty thousand people at the 2011 census, roughly an hour from Gaya city by road and not much further from Bodh Gaya. It is not a place with an international-curriculum school. What it does have are households connected outward: men working in the Gulf and sending money and expectations home, families with relatives in Kolkata and Delhi, teachers and officers posted in and out, traders along the highway whose children are the first in the family to think past Magadh University. Those are the people searching for IB and IGCSE tutors in Sherghati.

Home tuition here means online home tuition, and we would rather say that in the first minute than let you discover it later. No tutor of ours travels to Sherghati or walks into your drawing room; our in-person visiting service runs only in Gurugram and parts of Delhi NCR. What a child in this town gets is private teaching at home over video: the tutor writing on a screen both can see, marking a photographed answer script while the student watches, and sending a short written note afterwards. Because distance stops mattering, we can look across the whole country for someone who has taught IB Physics HL for years instead of settling for whoever happens to be in Gaya.

Most of the children we teach in this part of Bihar fall into one of two situations. Either they have already moved to an IB or Cambridge school somewhere else and are home for the holidays or studying remotely, or they are still in a CBSE or Bihar Board school in Sherghati or Gaya and are about to switch. Both situations have a specific gap. The first needs subject depth at Higher Level. The second needs somebody to rebuild the habits an international syllabus assumes and an Indian board classroom rarely demands: writing an argument, designing an experiment, showing a method rather than a memorised result.

At a glance

  • Online one-to-one lessons for IB PYP, MYP, DP and CP, and for Cambridge and Edexcel IGCSE
  • Timetables built around BSEB exam weeks, Chhath, Saraswati Puja and the Pitripaksh rush on the Gaya road
  • Switching support for children moving from a Bihar Board or CBSE classroom into Year 10 or the Diploma
  • A free trial hour, written rates before booking, and a tutor change if the pairing is wrong
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to Sherghati school years

Four IB programmes exist, and a Sherghati family usually meets only one or two of them, generally after a relocation has already been decided. Here is what each one asks of a child, and what it tends to mean in practice when the nearest authorised school is several hours away by train.

PYPNursery to Class 5, ages 3 to 12

Primary Years Programme

Inquiry-led primary schooling with no textbook marching order. Children investigate units of work, keep a portfolio and talk about their own thinking far earlier than a Bihar primary classroom expects.

A PYP child in Sherghati is almost always one whose parent has been posted abroad or to a metro, with the family spending part of the year here. Our tutors keep the reading and number work moving so the return to an inquiry classroom is not a shock, and they take the English load seriously, because a child who speaks Magahi and Hindi at home needs more spoken practice than the portfolio alone will give.

MYPClass 6 to Class 10, ages 11 to 16

Middle Years Programme

Five years across eight subject groups, assessed against published criteria rather than a single paper, and finished with a personal project in the last year.

This is where the Bihar to IB switch usually bites. A student who has been rewarded for a clean, memorised answer now gets marked on criteria such as inquiry and analysis, and the first report card is often a shock to the whole household. We spend the early weeks teaching the criteria themselves, in plain words, so a parent in Sherghati can read a grade descriptor and understand what the school actually wants.

DPClass 11 and Class 12, ages 16 to 19

Diploma Programme

Six subjects across two years, three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and the CAS requirement, examined in May or November.

Nearly all our Diploma students from this district are boarding or living elsewhere, in Patna, Kolkata, Delhi or abroad, and come to us when one Higher Level subject slips. Mathematics Analysis and Approaches and Chemistry are the two that bring families to the enquiry form most often. We coach the subject and the internal assessment method; we never write an IA, an Extended Essay or a Theory of Knowledge essay for a student.

CPClass 11 and Class 12, ages 16 to 19

Career-related Programme

A smaller IB route pairing two or more Diploma courses with a career-related study, a reflective project and a personal and professional skills course.

Rare in Bihar and rarer still in a town this size, but it surfaces when a child has gone to a school abroad that offers it, often in the Gulf where many Sherghati families have a working relative. We tutor the Diploma courses inside a CP timetable and help structure the reflective project without producing the content.

Subject coverage

IB subjects we tutor

These are the IB subjects we are asked for most often from Gaya district. A Sherghati enquiry is usually about one or two of them rather than a whole timetable, because the school is handling the rest and only a single Higher Level paper has gone wrong.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

SL and HL

The algebraic route, and the one an engineering or economics application usually wants. Students arriving from a Bihar Board or CBSE background often have the calculus but not the habit of writing a reasoned proof, so that is where we start.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

SL and HL

Modelling, statistics and technology-heavy work. Lighter on proof, heavier on interpreting a real data set and defending a choice of model in words.

Physics

SL and HL

Mechanics through to fields and, at Higher Level, the option topics. Most of our work here is on uncertainty treatment and on the practical write-up, neither of which a board classroom in this district tends to drill.

Chemistry

SL and HL

Bonding, energetics, kinetics, equilibrium and organic mechanisms. The common weak point is the data booklet: students know facts but not how to use the booklet quickly under exam pressure.

Biology

SL and HL

Cell biology, genetics, physiology and ecology, with strong emphasis on reading an unfamiliar graph and explaining a process in the number of marks available.

English A: Language and Literature

SL and HL

Textual analysis across literary and non-literary material, plus the individual oral. For a student whose everyday speech is Magahi or Hindi, the written register is the real task, and it responds well to weekly drafting.

English B

SL and HL

For students taking English as an acquired language. Listening, reading, writing and the productive oral, worked in short cycles rather than long lectures.

Hindi B

SL and HL

Comfortable ground for most children from this district, but the IB wants a specific text-type discipline, and marks are lost on format rather than on language.

Economics

SL and HL

Micro, macro, the global economy and development. Diagrams carry marks, and the development unit lands well with students who can draw on what they see along the highway and in surrounding villages.

Business Management

SL and HL

Human resources, finance, marketing and operations. Trading families here find the content familiar and the case-study answer structure unfamiliar.

Computer Science

SL and HL

Programming concepts, data structures and the internal assessment solution. We work in whatever language the school has chosen rather than impose our own.

Geography

SL and HL

Population, resources and hazards, with fieldwork method. Bihar's own flood and drought record gives a student here genuinely useful material for a case study.

History

SL and HL

Source analysis, essay argument and the internal assessment investigation. Magadha and the Bodh Gaya region sit inside several IB prescribed topics, which makes the research question easier to anchor.

Environmental Systems and Societies

SL

An interdisciplinary option that suits students who want a science without a Higher Level laboratory load, built around systems thinking and value perspectives.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

Guidance on the exhibition and the essay prompt: how to pick an example, how to shape a claim and counterclaim. Coaching on method, with the student doing the writing.

IGCSE coverage

IGCSE subjects we tutor

On the IGCSE side we cover Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel. The practical question for a Sherghati parent is usually not which subject but which tier, because Core and Extended lead to different grade ceilings and that decision gets made early in Year 10, sometimes without the family realising what it closes off.

Mathematics

Core and Extended

The most requested IGCSE subject from this district. Extended runs into functions, trigonometry and calculus-adjacent work that a Class 9 Bihar Board student has not met, so the first month is usually gap filling.

Additional Mathematics

Cambridge

For students heading to Mathematics Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level or to A Level Mathematics. Worth taking if the school offers it, because it removes much of the first-term shock of the Diploma.

Physics

Core and Extended

Forces, waves, electricity and the alternative-to-practical paper. The practical paper rewards precise description of apparatus, which is a learnable skill rather than a talent.

Chemistry

Core and Extended

Reactions, moles, acids and bases, and organic basics. Mole calculations are where most of our IGCSE Chemistry hours go.

Biology

Core and Extended

Human biology, plants, genetics and ecology, with heavy weighting on recall precision and correct terminology.

Combined and Co-ordinated Sciences

Core and Extended

A single-award or double-award route for students who do not want three separate sciences. We teach whichever specification the school has entered the child for.

English as a First Language

Core and Extended

Directed writing, composition and reading response. Strong, structured writing is the single highest-return investment for a student from a Hindi-medium background.

English as a Second Language

Core and Extended

Reading, writing, listening and speaking. Chosen where the school judges a first-language entry too steep, and perfectly respectable on a transcript.

Hindi as a Second Language

Cambridge

Straightforward for a child from Gaya district, and a sensible place to protect marks while the harder subjects are being rebuilt.

Economics

Core and Extended

Markets, the price mechanism and development indicators. The data-response paper needs practice on reading a table quickly and writing only what is asked.

Business Studies

Core and Extended

Ownership, finance, marketing and people in business, assessed through case studies that reward a two-sided answer with a judgement at the end.

Computer Science

Core and Extended

Data representation, algorithms and pseudocode, plus the practical programming element. Suits a student who already tinkers on a phone or a borrowed laptop.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around Sherghati school timetables

Three formats, and the base one is the same for every household in this town: live video, one tutor, one child. Our home-visiting tutors work only in Gurugram and parts of Delhi NCR, so nobody will be ringing your bell in Sherghati. What varies between these three is intensity and how much of the week the tutor is holding.

Weekly one-to-one online lessons

A fixed hour or two each week with the same tutor, on video, with a shared whiteboard and the school's own past papers open. This is what nearly every family from Gaya district starts with, and for most it is all they ever need.

  • A subject specialist from anywhere in the country, since the local pool is thin
  • The same tutor week after week, so nothing has to be explained twice
  • Scanned homework marked live while the student watches the pen move
  • A short written note to the parent after every session

Exam-term intensive blocks

A heavier run of sessions in the eight to ten weeks before a May or November series, or before school mocks. Papers under timed conditions, then a line-by-line walk through what the mark scheme actually wanted.

  • Two or three sessions a week instead of one, for a fixed stretch
  • Full past papers timed, marked and returned with a priority list
  • Built around the April and May heat, when early-morning slots work far better
  • Drops back to the normal weekly rhythm once the series is over

Switching support for a board-to-international move

For the Sherghati or Gaya student who has secured a place at an IB or Cambridge school elsewhere and has a summer to get ready. Not revision of what was missed, but training in the working habits the new classroom assumes.

  • A written gap list per subject after a short diagnostic session
  • Practice in extended writing, method shown in full and lab reporting
  • The assessment criteria explained in plain language for parents too
  • Continues after the move, since the tutor was never dependent on being nearby
Verified tutors

IB and IGCSE tutors available to students in Sherghati

Every tutor who teaches a Sherghati student keeps Indian Standard Time, so a slot agreed for half past seven in the evening is half past seven here, with no arithmetic. They are subject specialists first: somebody who has taught IB Chemistry at Higher Level through several exam cycles, or taken IGCSE Mathematics Extended classes year after year. We shortlist on syllabus experience rather than on who happens to be geographically closest, which is the whole point of teaching this way.

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Sherghati

01

Which Sherghati families end up on the IB or IGCSE at all?

  • Gulf-posted parents whose child is in a British or IB curriculum school abroad
  • Children boarding or living in Kolkata, Patna or Delhi with the family home still here
  • Transferred officers arriving from a city where the child had already started Cambridge
  • Highway trading families choosing a qualification that travels beyond the state

Four kinds of household, mostly. Families with a parent working in the Gulf, where a school fee is paid in dirhams and the curriculum is British or IB by default. Families who have moved a child to Kolkata, Patna or Delhi for schooling and kept the Sherghati house. Government and bank officers transferred in from a city where the child was already in a Cambridge school. And trading families on or near the highway who have decided, quite deliberately, that they want a route that travels further than a state board certificate does.

What unites them is that the decision is almost never made in Sherghati. It gets made when a posting changes, when a relative abroad offers to host, or when an older cousin's experience makes the case. By the time a parent here searches for a tutor, the school has usually been chosen and the problem has narrowed to one subject or one deadline.

This matters for how tuition should be set up. A family in a metro can walk into an institute and ask what is on offer. A parent in this town is working with a child who may be physically elsewhere during term, or who is sitting in a Bihar Board classroom while preparing for something quite different. The tutoring has to flex around that rather than assume a tidy single school year.

There is also a quieter group: children of teachers and of the professional families around Gaya and Bodh Gaya, who are not relocating at all but want their child to sit IGCSE privately or to be ready in case a move happens. We teach them the same way, and we are straightforward with them that private candidate entry for IGCSE has to be arranged through a registered centre, which in practice means travelling to Patna or further for the exam itself.

02

Bihar Board, CBSE, IGCSE or IB: what actually changes for a student from here

The Bihar School Examination Board runs the schooling most children in this district know, with matriculation and intermediate papers in February and results through March and April. CBSE sits alongside it in the private schools of Gaya and in a handful of schools closer to town. Both reward accurate recall of a defined syllabus and a clean, expected answer. That is not a criticism; it is a different design brief, and students who are good at it are genuinely good at something.

The IGCSE asks for the same content knowledge but tests it through unfamiliar contexts, so a question may wrap a known idea in a situation the student has never seen. The IB Diploma goes further again: six subjects rather than a stream, compulsory Theory of Knowledge, an Extended Essay of four thousand words that the student has to design, and internal assessment that counts towards the final grade. A child moving across from a Bihar Board Class 9 into Year 10 usually finds the content manageable and the format bewildering.

The gap we spend the most time on is not knowledge. It is the expectation that a student will argue. A Bihar Board answer that is correct and short can be full marks. An IGCSE Economics answer that is correct and short loses the evaluation marks, and an IB History answer with no counterclaim loses more. Teaching that shift is half of what a tutor does in the first term after a switch.

Parents also ask, reasonably, whether a child can return. Yes, with planning. An IGCSE student can join a CBSE or state board Class 11, though the subject mapping needs checking with the school before anything is promised. An IB Diploma is recognised for Indian university admission through the Association of Indian Universities equivalence certificate, which matters a great deal if Magadh University, Central University of South Bihar or Patna University is still on the list.

03

What does IB or IGCSE tuition cost for a family in Sherghati?

We do not publish a rate, because a single number would be misleading and we would rather quote you something true. The rate for your child depends on the programme, the level, the subject and how many hours a week you want, and you get it in writing before you commit to anything. The free trial hour happens first, and it costs nothing whether you go ahead afterwards or not.

The main driver is level. An IB Higher Level science or Mathematics Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level needs a tutor with years of specific examining and teaching experience in that subject, and there are not many of them. An IGCSE Core subject or a middle-years top-up draws on a much wider pool. Those two situations cannot sensibly cost the same.

Timing is the second driver. Booking a Higher Level Chemistry tutor in September for a May series is a different proposition from asking for one in March, when every family with an exam coming has already filled the good slots. Families in this district who plan around the Bihar Board February crunch and get their requests in before it tend to get both better availability and a calmer quote.

The third is scope. One subject once a week is the commonest arrangement from Sherghati and the cheapest. A two-subject intensive block before mocks costs more per week but runs for a limited stretch. Switching support is usually a short diagnostic plus a defined number of sessions over a holiday, which makes it easy to budget. Compared with the alternative that families here weigh most often, which is relocating a parent to a city for school access, tuition is the smaller line in the household budget by a wide margin.

Online home tuition, a Gaya coaching centre, a local private tutor or self-study?

For an IB or IGCSE student in Sherghati, online one-to-one tuition is usually the only option that is actually available, and it helps to understand why rather than take it on trust. A coaching centre in Gaya is built for Bihar Board, CBSE, JEE and NEET volumes, because that is what the district demands, and its teachers are excellent at that work. Ask the same centre for Theory of Knowledge guidance or an IB internal assessment review and you are asking outside its design.

A private tutor found locally can be a real help with Mathematics up to a point, and we would never pretend otherwise. The limit arrives at the format: the mark scheme, the command terms, the way an IGCSE alternative-to-practical paper wants apparatus described. Those are specific to the board, and a tutor who has not worked with them cannot teach them, however strong the underlying subject knowledge.

Self-study with past papers from the school and the free material online does work for some students, mostly disciplined Diploma candidates who need structure rather than teaching. It fails quietly when a student has been practising a wrong method for a month and nobody has looked at the working. One marked script a week catches that; a stack of unmarked attempts does not.

The honest weakness of online lessons is that they need a stable connection and a quiet hour, neither of which is guaranteed in every house around here. We plan for it: an audio fallback with a shared document, recordings of explanations where the tutor allows, fuller written notes when a session has been patchy, and a preference for early-evening slots before the summer load on the supply starts.

Four ways a Sherghati student might prepare, compared honestly

How do IB and IGCSE exam dates sit against the Sherghati year?

Both main IB sessions, May and November, and both IGCSE series, May and June and then October and November, fall at awkward moments for a household in this district. The May series peaks exactly when Gaya district heat is at its worst and when an afternoon indoors is uncomfortable. The November series runs straight out of the Chhath and Diwali weeks, when a Bihar house is given over to preparation of a quite different kind.

February deserves its own warning. Saraswati Puja is a genuinely big occasion in Bihar schools and in the bazaar, and it collides with the Bihar Board matric and intermediate papers, which means the whole town is in exam mood for somebody else's exam. An IB or IGCSE child in that fortnight is both distracted and, oddly, less supported, because the adult attention in the house is on a cousin's board paper.

September brings the Pitripaksh fortnight, when pilgrims arrive in large numbers for the rites at Gaya and the roads in that direction get heavy. For a family that normally drives to Gaya for anything, it is a fortnight to stay put, which is an argument for a lesson that needs no travel at all.

What we do with all this is simple enough. We set the calendar backwards from the exam, mark the weeks that will realistically be lost, and put the heavy lifting in the periods that will hold. For a May candidate that means serious work from October to January and timed papers in February and March, with April reserved for review in the cooler hours. December and January also happen to be the kindest study months here, apart from the morning fog on the highway, and we lean on them hard.

The study year for an IB or IGCSE student in Sherghati

06

Where do students from this district go after Class 12?

  • Magadh University, Gaya College and Central University of South Bihar, reached with an AIU equivalence certificate for Diploma holders
  • CUET-UG for central university places, which needs its own practice on speed and format
  • JEE and NEET, open to IB and IGCSE students but demanding separate drilling in parallel
  • Overseas applications, where the Diploma or an A Level route is read without translation

Three directions, and families here usually keep at least two of them open. The nearest is the local and state university system: Magadh University, headquartered at Bodh Gaya, Gaya College, the Central University of South Bihar, and the colleges of Patna. For these, an IB Diploma needs an equivalence certificate from the Association of Indian Universities, which is routine but has to be applied for in good time, and an IGCSE on its own is not a Class 12 qualification at all, so A Levels or an IB Diploma has to follow it.

The second is the competitive national route, which in Bihar is almost a social institution. Thousands of students from Gaya district sit JEE and NEET each year, many after a stint in Patna or Kota. An IB or IGCSE student can sit both, and eligibility is not the problem. Preparation style is: these papers reward speed and pattern recognition over the extended reasoning an IB classroom trains, so a candidate needs separate, deliberate practice alongside the Diploma rather than an assumption that good grades will carry across. CUET-UG matters here too, since central university admission runs through it, and it is closer in style to a board paper than to an IB examination.

The third is study abroad, and for a town with this many Gulf and overseas family connections it is less exotic than it sounds. The IB Diploma and the A Level route after IGCSE are both read directly by universities in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, the Gulf and much of Europe, which removes a layer of explanation that a state board transcript needs. Predicted grades, references and an English language test are the practical pieces, and they come up earlier than most families expect.

Our part in all of this is narrow and we keep it that way. We teach the subjects and the assessment method well enough that the grades support whichever door a family wants to open. We are not an admissions consultancy, we do not place students, and we do not promise any university outcome to anyone.

07

IB Mathematics and the sciences, taught to a student in Gaya district

  • Analysis and Approaches for proof-heavy routes, Applications and Interpretation for modelling and statistics
  • Written method taught from the start, since a correct answer with no visible reasoning loses marks
  • Internal assessment coached on question design, uncertainty and structure, never written for the student
  • Command terms drilled deliberately, because misreading the verb costs more marks than weak content

The Mathematics choice comes first and gets made too fast. Analysis and Approaches is the algebraic, proof-leaning course and the one that an engineering, economics or mathematics-heavy degree application generally expects. Applications and Interpretation is built around modelling, statistics and technology, and it suits a student heading for design, management, psychology or the life sciences. Neither is the soft option; they are different subjects wearing similar names, and a student from a CBSE or Bihar Board background usually has the computational speed for either and the proof discipline for neither.

At Higher Level, Analysis and Approaches runs into proof, complex numbers and a good deal of calculus, and the usual failure is not inability but habit: a student who has always produced an answer now has to produce an argument. We work on written method from the first session, which feels slow for a fortnight and then pays for itself in every paper afterwards.

In Physics, Chemistry and Biology the internal assessment is where a remote tutor is genuinely useful. The school supplies the laboratory and the supervision; we help with the question, the variables, the uncertainty treatment and the structure of the write-up, and the student does the work and the writing. For a child whose school is in another city while the family is here, that split is often the only coaching arrangement that is practical at all.

The other recurring weak point is reading the question. IB command terms are precise, and the difference between describe, explain, outline and evaluate is the difference between half marks and full marks. We drill them explicitly, with the student annotating a paper before writing anything, because this is the cheapest grade improvement available in any subject.

08

IGCSE Core and Extended: the choice that gets made too early

Cambridge IGCSE tiers several subjects into Core and Extended. Core covers grades C to G on the letter scale, Extended reaches up to A star. Schools decide the entry, often in the first term of Year 10 and on the strength of a single early assessment, and a student entered for Core cannot pick up the grades needed for a demanding A Level or Higher Level course later. Families from this district frequently do not know the tiering exists until the entry is already made.

So we look at it early and honestly. If a child has the content but is weak on unfamiliar contexts, Extended with focused support is usually the right call. If the gap is genuinely in the foundations, Core with a strong grade and a plan to build afterwards beats an Extended entry that produces a poor grade and a bruised student. That conversation is worth having with the school before the deadline, not after.

Subject choice has a similar long shadow. A student who may want IB Mathematics Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level is in a far better position having taken Additional Mathematics if the school offers it. A likely Economics or Business student gains from one of those at IGCSE, although neither is a prerequisite. Three separate sciences are not required for a Higher Level science, and for many students Co-ordinated Sciences plus genuinely strong Mathematics is the stronger combination.

One point specific to a family here: if the plan is to sit IGCSE as a private candidate rather than through a school, entry has to go through a registered Cambridge or Edexcel centre, and we are not aware of one in Gaya district. That means travel to a city with a centre, and it means registering well before the series closes. We will tell you this at the enquiry stage rather than let it become a problem in February.

What does a tutoring week look like from a Sherghati house?

  • One fixed weekly hour, the same tutor, on IST
  • Homework sent in advance so the lesson starts where the difficulty is
  • A plain-language written note to the parent after every session
  • Sessions moved rather than wasted during board weeks, Chhath and the worst of the heat

Ordinarily one fixed hour, same day, same time, with the same tutor. The student joins on a laptop or a tablet at home, the tutor shares a whiteboard, and the hour is spent on work rather than on setting up. Homework is photographed and sent before the next session so the tutor arrives having already seen where it went wrong, which saves a quarter of the lesson every week.

Parents get a short written note after each session: what was covered, what was weak, what the next piece of work is. We keep it in plain language, not grade jargon, because a parent in this town is often making a judgement about an assessment system they have never themselves sat. If a note stops making sense, say so and the tutor will rewrite it.

The timetable bends to the household, not the reverse. Shop families take late slots. Children travelling to a Gaya school take weekend mornings. During the February board weeks and the Chhath days we simply move or pause sessions rather than burn them, and in the April and May heat we shift to early morning where the family can manage it. None of this requires a special arrangement; it is how we schedule here as a matter of course.

If the pairing is not working, tell us and we change the tutor without an argument. That matters more in a town with no local alternative, because a family here cannot simply walk down the road and try someone else. The fit being wrong is a scheduling problem for us and nothing for a parent to be awkward about.

Where we tutor

Sherghati town and the blocks around it

Sherghati sits where the Grand Trunk Road crosses southern Gaya district, and the families who contact us come from the town itself and from the villages and block headquarters that treat it as their market and office town. Since nothing we do requires a tutor to reach your street, the only real question is bandwidth and a quiet hour. Here is how that works out across the area.

Sherghati town and the main bazaar

The densest part of town, and where most of our enquiries from this area originate. Shop families often want a late slot after the shutters come down, which suits a tutor on IST perfectly well.

The Grand Trunk Road corridor

Highway frontage, dhabas, transport businesses and a steady flow of long-distance traffic. Households here are the most outward-looking in the area and the most likely to be weighing a Cambridge school in another city.

Dobhi

The junction village to the north-east where the Gaya road meets the highway. A common staging point for anyone driving a child to Gaya for school or coaching, which is why a Dobhi family often prefers online lessons over three hours a day in a car.

Barachatti

On the highway towards the Jharkhand border, with forest country to the south. Families here are usually the furthest from any school option and the quickest to see why a video lesson beats a commute.

Imamganj

A block headquarters to the west with a largely agricultural economy. Where we teach here it is normally a single subject for a child whose parent works outside the state.

Dumaria

Hilly ground on the southern edge of the district. Connectivity can be patchy, so we plan a fallback audio-only arrangement and send fuller written notes after each session.

Amas

Flat farmland on the Aurangabad side. A handful of our students here are in CBSE schools and are being prepared for a Year 10 entry somewhere else.

Banke Bazar

A smaller market settlement in the southern part of the district. Lessons here are usually scheduled early in the evening, before the daily load on the power supply starts biting.

Gurua

To the north-west, with its own small market and secondary schools. Mathematics and Science are what we are asked for from this direction almost without exception.

The Bodh Gaya side

North-east of town, where the pilgrimage economy brings in a surprising amount of foreign contact. Children of families working around the monasteries and guest houses are often the first in the area to hear of Cambridge qualifications.

The Gaya city side

An hour or so up the road, with the district's coaching clusters, Gaya Junction on the Grand Chord line and the main hospital and college network. Many Sherghati students already make this trip weekly, and an online slot is what stops it becoming daily.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Sherghati

Sherghati and Gaya district

We cannot confirm a single school in Sherghati, or in Gaya city for that matter, authorised for the IB or registered for Cambridge or Edexcel IGCSE. The schooling here runs on the Bihar School Examination Board and CBSE, and that is an honest starting point rather than a problem: it simply means the international syllabus arrives through a tutor and, usually, a move later on.

    Nearby: Kolkata

The nearest large city with a long-established cluster of IB and IGCSE schools, reachable from Gaya Junction on the Grand Chord line, and the most common boarding choice for families from this part of Bihar.

    • Calcutta International School
    • The Heritage School, Kolkata
    • The Cambridge School, Calcutta
    • Modern High School for Girls, Kolkata

    Nearby: Delhi NCR

Where a transfer or a posting takes the whole family rather than just the child. This is also the one region where our in-person home visits operate, across Gurugram and parts of Delhi NCR.

    • The British School, New Delhi
    • Vasant Valley School, Delhi
    • Sanskriti School, Delhi
    • Pathways World School, Gurugram
    • Step by Step School, Noida

Nearby: the Mussoorie and Dehradun boarding belt

A traditional boarding answer for Bihar families who want distance and a hill climate. Woodstock School in Mussoorie is an authorised IB World School, and the Dehradun boarding schools sit within a short drive of it.

    • Woodstock School, Mussoorie

IB Gram is an independent tuition service. We are not connected to, endorsed by or acting for the International Baccalaureate Organization, Cambridge Assessment International Education, Pearson Edexcel or any school listed above. Schools are named only to describe where students from this district actually study, and a family should confirm current authorisation and registration with the school itself before deciding anything.

    How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

    1. 01

      Tell us the specifics

Message us on WhatsApp at +91 7439 368 115 or write to support@ibgram.com with the programme, the year, the subjects and, if you know it, the exam session. For a Sherghati family it also helps to say where the child studies during term, since that is often not Sherghati at all.

    2. 02

A short conversation about the real problem

We talk for fifteen or twenty minutes, usually with the parent and then briefly with the student. We are trying to find out whether this is a content gap, a format problem or an internal assessment deadline, because those need three different tutors and three different plans.

    3. 03

A free trial hour with the proposed tutor

You meet the tutor we have shortlisted and so does your child, in a real teaching session rather than a sales call. Nothing is paid and nothing is owed. If the fit is wrong, we propose someone else and you try again.

    4. 04

Rates in writing, then a fixed weekly slot

You get the rate, the session length and the frequency in writing before anything begins, with no published price list to haggle against. We then lock a slot that survives a Sherghati week, including evening shop hours and any travel to Gaya.

    5. 05

Teaching, notes and review each term

Lessons run weekly, notes come after each one, and every term we sit with the parent and look at whether the plan still fits. Ahead of a May or November series the intensity goes up for a defined stretch and then comes back down.

    Why families choose us

What Sherghati parents tell us matters most

Syllabus specialists, not whoever is nearest

Teaching over video means the pool is the whole country. A Sherghati family gets a tutor who has taught IB Chemistry at Higher Level through several exam cycles, which is simply not a choice that exists locally.

    Straight talk about home visits

Our tutors do not come to your house in Sherghati. In-person visiting tuition exists only in Gurugram and parts of Delhi NCR. We say it on the page, in the FAQs and in the first conversation, so nobody is disappointed later.

    Built for a Bihar calendar

Sessions planned around Bihar Board February, Saraswati Puja, the Chhath week, the Pitripaksh crowds on the Gaya road and the April and May heat, rather than a timetable that pretends those weeks are normal.

    Switching handled properly

Moving from a Bihar Board or CBSE classroom into Year 10 or the Diploma is mostly a change of habits, not of content. We teach the assessment criteria and the writing explicitly instead of hoping a child absorbs them.

    Coaching on method, never ghostwriting

We help with internal assessment design, Extended Essay structure and Theory of Knowledge approach. We do not write any of them. A tutor who hands over finished work is putting the student's diploma at risk.

Easy to leave and easy to change

Free trial first, rates in writing, no long lock-in, and a tutor change on request without a negotiation. In a town with no second option down the road, that flexibility is the least we can offer.

    Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Sherghati: your questions answered

Do you have IB and IGCSE tutors in Sherghati?+

Yes, for Sherghati students, taught online. Our tutors are spread across India and teach your child one to one over video on Indian Standard Time, so a slot at eight in the evening is eight in the evening here. None of them is based in Sherghati and none of them travels to the town. What the arrangement gives you instead is a genuine specialist in the exact syllabus your child is on, IB PYP through to CP, or Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel IGCSE, which is not something the local tutoring market can supply.

Will a tutor come to our home in Sherghati for private tuition?+

No, and we want to be clear about it before you spend time enquiring. IB Gram's visiting home-tuition service operates only in Gurugram and parts of Delhi NCR. Everywhere else in the country, including the whole of Bihar, we teach online. In practice your child still studies at home, at a desk in your own house, with a private tutor on the other side of the screen marking work in real time. The teaching is one to one either way; only the travel is missing.

Are there any IB or IGCSE schools in Sherghati or Gaya?+

We cannot confirm one, either in Sherghati or in Gaya city. Schooling across this district runs on the Bihar School Examination Board and CBSE. The nearest established clusters of IB and Cambridge schools are in Kolkata, reachable from Gaya Junction, and in Delhi NCR, with Woodstock School in Mussoorie a long-standing boarding choice for Bihar families. That is exactly why most of our students from this area are either already studying elsewhere or preparing for a move, and why a tutor is the practical bridge in between.

What does IB tuition cost for a student in Sherghati?+

We do not publish rates, because the honest answer depends on your child. The level matters most: an IB Higher Level science costs more than IGCSE Core support because far fewer tutors can teach it well. Then the number of hours a week, how much notice you give before a May or November series, and whether you want one subject or several with internal assessment coaching. You get a figure in writing before committing, and the trial hour beforehand is free whether or not you continue.

Can my child switch from Bihar Board to IGCSE in Class 9 or 10?+

Yes, and it happens regularly, but the timing deserves care. IGCSE is a two-year course, so joining in the middle of Year 10 means covering a year of unfamiliar assessment format at speed. The content is usually not the obstacle; a Bihar Board Class 9 student is often ahead on computation. The obstacles are extended writing, applying ideas to unseen contexts and the practical papers. We run a short diagnostic, give you a written gap list per subject, and tell you plainly if the switch would be better made a year later.

Which IB subjects do you cover for students from this district?+

Both Mathematics courses, Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation, at Standard and Higher Level, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, English A Language and Literature, English B, Hindi B, Economics, Business Management, Computer Science, Geography, History and Environmental Systems and Societies. We also guide Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay on method. Mathematics and Chemistry are what families from Gaya district ask for most. If a subject is not on that list, ask anyway; we will say yes or no straight away rather than take your booking and hope.

Do you teach Cambridge IGCSE or Edexcel IGCSE?+

Both. Tell us which board your child's school has entered them for, because the specifications differ in content split, paper structure and practical assessment, and a tutor working from the wrong one wastes everybody's time. Cambridge tiers many subjects into Core and Extended; Edexcel structures some papers differently. Once we know the board and the subject codes, the tutor works from that specification and its past papers rather than from a generic course of their own.

How does an online lesson work if our connection is unreliable?+

We plan for it rather than pretend it will not happen. Lessons need only a modest connection, and if video drops the tutor continues on audio with a shared document so the hour is not lost. Where a session has been patchy, the written note afterwards is fuller, and explanations can be recorded for replay where the tutor is happy to do so. For households in the blocks south of town we usually suggest an early-evening slot, before the summer load on the power supply starts causing trouble.

Can you help with the Extended Essay or an internal assessment?+

We coach the method and nothing more. That means helping a student narrow a research question, choose variables, plan an experiment, handle uncertainties, structure an argument and understand what the criteria reward. We do not write any part of an Extended Essay, an internal assessment, a Theory of Knowledge essay or a reflective project. The IB treats submitted work as the student's own, and a tutor who supplies text is risking the child's entire diploma. Any tutor offering otherwise should be refused.

Is an IB Diploma accepted for universities in Bihar?+

Yes, with the Association of Indian Universities equivalence certificate, which is the standard route and worth applying for early rather than in the final rush. With it, an IB Diploma is accepted for admission at Indian universities, including Magadh University, Central University of South Bihar and the Patna colleges, subject to each institution's own subject requirements. Central university admission generally runs through CUET-UG, which rewards speed and recall more than an IB examination does, so a Diploma student aiming there should practise that format separately.

Can an IGCSE or IB student sit JEE or NEET?+

Yes. Eligibility is not the issue; the preparation style is. Both examinations reward fast pattern recognition across a large body of recalled material, while an IB classroom trains extended reasoning and written explanation. A student from this district who wants JEE or NEET alongside the Diploma needs deliberate, separate practice on speed and question patterns, usually from Class 11 onwards. Note also that IGCSE alone is not a Class 12 qualification, so A Levels or an IB Diploma has to follow it before either examination is on the table.

Which blocks around Sherghati do you teach students in?+

All of them, because distance is irrelevant to how we work. We teach students in Sherghati town and along the Grand Trunk Road corridor, and families from Dobhi, Barachatti, Imamganj, Dumaria, Amas, Banke Bazar and Gurua, as well as from the Bodh Gaya and Gaya city side. All lessons are online, so no tutor needs to reach your village. The only practical variables are the strength of your connection and finding an hour when the house is quiet enough to work.

My child studies in Kolkata and is home only in the holidays. Can that work?+

It works well, and it is one of the commonest arrangements we have with families from this district. Because the tutor is online, nothing changes when the child moves between a hostel in Kolkata and the house here: same tutor, same slot, same shared whiteboard. Many families start lessons during a holiday at home and keep them running right through the term. We only ask that you tell us if the time zone or the daily routine changes, so the slot can be moved rather than quietly missed.

What happens in the free trial lesson?+

It is a real teaching hour, not a sales pitch. The tutor works on something your child is actually stuck on, which tells you more than any introduction could, and you see the whiteboard, the pace and whether your child talks or goes silent. Afterwards you get a short note on what the tutor saw and would plan. Nothing is charged and nothing is owed. If the pairing is wrong, say so and we will propose a different tutor for another free session.

Can you prepare a child for an IB or IGCSE school entrance test?+

Yes, and for families in this district that is often the first piece of work. Most international schools assess English, Mathematics and reasoning, and some interview the parents too. We prepare the written components and run practice interviews so a child who has only ever written Bihar Board or CBSE style answers is not meeting the format for the first time on the day. We prepare students; we have no influence over any school's admission decision and we never suggest otherwise.

How do we start, and how quickly can lessons begin?+

Message +91 7439 368 115 on WhatsApp or email support@ibgram.com with the programme, the year, the subjects and the exam session. We will usually come back with a shortlisted tutor within a day or two, and the free trial hour can often happen the same week. Specialist Higher Level tutors get booked out before an exam series, so if you are planning for a May or November session, the earlier you ask the better your choice of slot and tutor.

Do you teach the MYP personal project and the PYP exhibition?+

We guide both on method, which is all a tutor should do. For the MYP personal project that means helping a student pick a goal that is actually achievable, keep a usable process journal and understand the criteria the school will mark against. For the PYP exhibition it means supporting the inquiry and the presentation rather than producing material. In both cases the student does the work, and we keep the parent informed about what the school expects, since these requirements are unfamiliar to most families here.

Book a free trial hour for your child in Sherghati

If your child is on the IB or an IGCSE and something has gone wrong in one subject, or if a move to an international school is coming and you want the ground prepared, start with the free hour. Message +91 7439 368 115 on WhatsApp or write to support@ibgram.com with the programme, the year and the subject, and say which exam session you are working towards. We will shortlist a tutor who has taught that syllabus, put the rate in writing, and fix a weekly slot that survives a Sherghati week, board exam weeks and Chhath included. Lessons are online and one to one; no tutor visits homes here, and we would rather you knew that from the start than found out afterwards.
