IB and IGCSE Tutors and Online Home Tuition in Phillaur

In Phillaur, home tuition for an IB or IGCSE student means one child, one tutor and a live video lesson at the family's own table. The old Sutlej timber town sits between Ludhiana and Jalandhar on the Grand Trunk Road, in a belt of Punjab where many families have relatives in Canada, the UK or Australia and ask early about international boards.

  • Each tutor has already taught the specific IB subject or IGCSE paper code
  • Teaching in Phillaur is by video; in-person tuition is offered only in Gurugram and parts of Delhi NCR
  • A written recap follows every class, and a swap of tutor is easy
  • One free trial lesson, then a quoted rate on paper

IB & IGCSE in Phillaur

Phillaur, the Sutlej town between Ludhiana and Jalandhar, and its IB and IGCSE questions

Phillaur stands on the bank of the Sutlej where timber from the Shivalik hills once floated down to be sold; before Partition it was Punjab's principal timber market. Today its best-known landmark is the old fort associated with Maharaja Ranjit Singh, now the Punjab Police training academy, which also houses a fingerprint bureau founded in 1892. The town is a railway junction on the Grand Trunk Road, about 20 km from Ludhiana and 45 km from Jalandhar, and its literacy rate is over eighty per cent.

This is the Doaba, the part of Punjab with the strongest ties to Canada, Britain, the Gulf and Australia, and Phillaur parents often start thinking about overseas study when a child is still in middle school. Local schools follow the Punjab School Education Board or CBSE, and we could not confirm any school in Phillaur itself that runs the IB or a Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel IGCSE. Ludhiana's Cambridge campuses and Jalandhar's international schools are the nearest options.

Between the daily commute on the GT Road and the load of school and coaching, a child has little time to spare. IB Gram answers with a private lesson at home on video: a notebook, a laptop and a shared board connect your child with a tutor elsewhere in India who has taught the syllabus before. No tutor comes to Phillaur, as tuition at the door is a Gurugram and Delhi NCR arrangement only.

We are independent of the IB, Cambridge, Pearson and every school named on this page. Tutors explain and correct; writing a student's Internal Assessment, Extended Essay, TOK essay or coursework is something they decline to do.

At a glance

  • All four IB programmes, plus Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel IGCSE
  • One-to-one classes in English, with Punjabi or Hindi explanation if useful
  • A free first class before fees come up
  • No visits to the house in Phillaur, because doorstep tuition is limited to Gurugram and parts of Delhi NCR
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to Phillaur school years

Phillaur families usually meet the IB through a school in Ludhiana, Jalandhar or Mohali, or through a plan to study overseas. These notes say what each stage asks of a child and where a tutor adds value.

PYPNursery to Class 5, ages 3-11

IB Primary Years Programme

Young learners work on themed units, asking questions and presenting their discoveries in a closing Exhibition. There is no external exam. A tutor works on fluency in English reading, confident counting and the ability to talk about an idea.

A small child from Phillaur heading to a Ludhiana or Jalandhar campus often needs only a few short sessions of English conversation and number play.

MYPClass 6-10, ages 11-16

IB Middle Years Programme

Subjects are assessed on criteria, and projects and tasks count along with tests. A pupil from a PSEB or CBSE classroom usually knows the facts and benefits from writing investigations, comparing sources and reflecting in English.

MYP candidates from the Phillaur belt tend to need first help with lab reports, source questions and planning the personal project.

DPClass 11-12, ages 16-19

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three or four at Higher Level, with the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS. The top total is 45, written papers come in May or November, and internal assessments are due long before.

A Diploma student with a Phillaur address normally studies in the Chandigarh-Mohali area and uses online lessons at home on weekends and over Diwali and the summer.

CPClass 11-12, ages 16-19

IB Career-related Programme

CP sets Diploma courses beside a career-related study and a reflective strand. It is rare in Indian schools, and its Diploma courses are marked to the same standard as the full Diploma.

We rarely hear about CP from Punjab's Doaba; if a family asks, the Diploma subjects are taught as for any DP candidate.

Subject coverage

IB subjects we tutor

Give us the subject, the level and the exam session and we look for a tutor who has taught precisely that. IB Maths shows the point: there are two courses, each at two levels, and a tutor strong in one pairing may not suit another.

IB Maths Analysis & Approaches

HL / SL

Calculus, algebra, functions and proof. Punjab Board and CBSE students are swift at technique, and we add full written justification.

IB Maths Applications & Interpretation

HL / SL

Modelling and statistics with a graphing calculator, using data like hosiery exports, wheat yields and remittance flows.

IB Physics

HL / SL

Mechanics, waves, fields and modern physics, with steady attention to units, uncertainty and graph presentation.

IB Chemistry

HL / SL

Moles, energetics, equilibrium and organic chemistry, working with the data booklet from the first class.

IB Biology

HL / SL

A large syllabus tamed by spaced recall and command-word practice; groundwater and Sutlej pollution offer local cases.

IB Economics

HL / SL

Diagrams and evaluation, with Punjab's remittance economy, hosiery and sports-goods clusters and wheat-paddy rotation as examples.

IB Business Management

HL / SL

Case studies and the internal research project, relevant to the many business families of the Ludhiana-Jalandhar belt.

IB English A: Language and Literature

HL / SL

Close reading of unseen texts and the oral commentary, for students who think in Punjabi.

IB Punjabi B

HL / SL

Comprehension, writing and speaking for fluent Punjabi speakers, subject to the school offering it.

IB Hindi B

HL / SL

Language skills and oral practice for students who speak Hindi at home or school.

IB Computer Science

HL / SL

Algorithms, data structures and a staged project.

IB Environmental Systems & Societies

SL / HL

Systems models with stubble burning, falling water tables and Sutlej water quality as grounded cases.

IB Geography

HL / SL

Resources, hazards and development, with the Green Revolution a ready-made case.

IB History

HL / SL

Source evaluation and essay planning, with Punjab's 19th-century history, including Ranjit Singh's state, a close-to-home anchor.

IB Psychology

HL / SL

Studies, methods and structured essays.

IGCSE coverage

IGCSE subjects we tutor

IGCSE is not one exam but two: Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel each set their own papers, tiers and question styles, so naming the board comes first. What follows are the subjects that parents around Phillaur request most.

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580)

Core / Extended

Calculator and non-calculator papers; Extended candidates train on algebra, trigonometry and sequences.

Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics (0606)

Grade 9-10

An early start on calculus for IB HL hopefuls.

Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics A (4MA1)

Foundation / Higher

Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies (0450)

Grade 9-10

Business structures, marketing and finance, close to many local family firms.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around Phillaur school timetables

All Phillaur teaching is online. What differs between families is the rhythm, and three patterns are common.

A standing class every week

One teacher, one fixed evening. Questions arrive with the student, new material is explained and any error is corrected live on the shared page.

  • Tutor chosen for the exact syllabus
  • Roughly an hour, one or two evenings weekly
  • Pen-and-paper working shown on camera
  • A good fit for IGCSE, MYP and DP

A planned term with recaps

A term map, a plain recap after every class and a short call with parents every few weeks to rearrange topics.

  • Recaps written for parents new to the IB
  • Brief calls, no surprises
  • Sits comfortably beside school and coaching
  • Extra revision before unit tests

Sprints before the papers

As mocks and the May or November sessions draw near, classes become timed past papers with thorough correction.

  • Scripts marked as an examiner would mark them
  • Up to four sessions a week if the household can manage
  • Kept clear of Diwali and Baisakhi
  • Starts about three weeks before paper one

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Phillaur

01

Is there an IB or IGCSE school in Phillaur?

Not one we can confirm. The schools of Phillaur follow the Punjab School Education Board or CBSE, and several advertise English medium. If a school claims to offer the IB or IGCSE, ask for its authorisation and the subject list for the current year before paying any fee.

Because Phillaur is well placed on the GT Road, the nearest options are not far. Ludhiana has Cambridge campuses about 20 km west, Jalandhar has international schools 45 km east, and the Chandigarh-Mohali tricity, about two hours away, has the widest choice including the IB Diploma. Some families commute their child, some rent a flat and some choose boarding.

Each school sets its own admission test, age cut-off and fees, and Class 9 and Class 11 places are the hardest to get. A year of preparation changes the outcome of an entrance test noticeably.

Online tutoring suits Phillaur's position. A child can start learning the IGCSE or MYP style while still at the local school, and a student enrolled in Ludhiana can add subject depth without another trip along the highway.

02

How do the Punjab Board, CBSE, IGCSE and IB compare for Phillaur families?

The Punjab School Education Board examines Class 10 and Class 12 in March, in Punjabi, Hindi or English. CBSE examines in February and March. IGCSE and IB sit mainly in May and November, and their papers pay for reasoning and application as much as recall.

Pupils in the Doaba are usually quick and well drilled. Under an international board the extra marks come from stated units, defined terms, justified steps and full sentences, so the first weeks of tutoring focus on writing the reasoning, not on new content.

Language shapes the plan. Punjabi is the home language for most families, Hindi is common, and the papers are in English. Many NRI-linked children already speak English with relatives abroad, which helps, though written academic English still needs practice.

The right board depends on the plan. A JEE or NEET attempt suggests CBSE or the Punjab Board. A Diploma seat, a private university or a degree in Canada, Australia or the UK suggests IGCSE first and the Diploma afterwards.

03

What goes into the price of IB or IGCSE tuition in Phillaur?

  • Course level, from IB Higher to IGCSE Foundation
  • Subject, and years the tutor has taught that syllabus
  • Weekly hours and length of each class
  • A standing plan or a burst before exams

Fees are not listed on our site, as no two children need the same thing. The written quote that follows your child's free trial reflects four things: how demanding the course is, which subject it covers, how many years the tutor has taught that exact syllabus and how many hours a week you choose.

Teaching IB Physics at Higher Level is a different job from coaching IGCSE Foundation Maths, and rates follow the depth of expertise. A veteran may charge more per hour yet finish the work in fewer sessions, so the hourly figure alone can mislead.

Online lessons cut other costs. No diesel or bus fare on the GT Road, no evenings lost at a Ludhiana coaching centre, and no rented room near a city school before you know whether a move is needed. Families that already budget for school fees and exam coaching feel those savings.

Our advice is to take the trial, read the quote and weigh it against current spending. The arrangement can be paused or changed whenever your situation shifts.

04

Online tutor, classes in Ludhiana, a local tutor or self-study?

The coaching businesses of Ludhiana and Jalandhar are huge, yet they exist for board results, IELTS, JEE and NEET. A student of the IB or IGCSE may sit among classmates on different courses, taught by people who have never scored an IB Internal Assessment.

Evening batches in Ludhiana exist, yet twenty kilometres each way after a full school day, through GT Road traffic and winter fog, is a heavy ask. Video brings a similar specialist to the home desk.

A local private tutor is easy to find in Phillaur and may teach school subjects well. Syllabus-specific knowledge is the missing piece, as few have taught IB or Cambridge papers.

Past papers can carry a self-driven child a long way in IGCSE Maths and the sciences. Alone, though, essays and coursework go unmarked, since nobody can explain which criterion cost the marks.

How do wheat harvest, stubble smoke and fog shape the Phillaur school year?

Punjab's farming year rules the calendar. Wheat is harvested in April, close to Baisakhi on 13 or 14 April, when families celebrate, travel to gurdwaras and fairs and sometimes help in the fields. That falls inside the IB May preparation window, so lessons that fortnight should be short and fixed in advance.

From October into November the paddy comes in and stubble fires often leave a haze across the plain, with poor air and short visibility. Dussehra and Diwali arrive in the same weeks, right beside the Cambridge autumn series and the IB November exams, so the sensible move is to finish revision beforehand.

Winter fog from December to January is dense along the GT Road, delaying trains and buses. An evening lesson at home needs no journey, which is a clear advantage of online tuition. Lohri on 13 January is a family occasion.

Summers are hot with a short monsoon. Power cuts in the heat can interrupt a class, so we ask families to share when electricity is steadiest. March carries the Punjab Board exams and a quieter house.

06

Where do IB and IGCSE students from Phillaur go next?

Within India, students from the Doaba commonly look to Chandigarh, Delhi, Ludhiana and Jalandhar. Panjab University, Delhi University, Lovely Professional University, Thapar and the private universities of the tricity are familiar names. Each sets its own admission rules, which change from year to year.

Abroad is the stronger pull. Canada, the UK and Australia are the destinations most often mentioned, and IB and IGCSE grades are read routinely there. Many households already have relatives who can advise on colleges, visas and part-time work. Tutors support the academic subjects; personal statements and applications remain the student's own.

Indian universities usually ask for an equivalence certificate from the Association of Indian Universities when IB or IGCSE results replace Class 12 marks, and Diploma holders may also sit CUET-UG for central universities. Both rules are amended, so read the latest notice.

A career in engineering or medicine calls for planning at the subject-choice stage. JEE and NEET name the subjects they want, and a Diploma set missing Physics, Chemistry or Biology can shut a door, so read the rules first.

07

Where do students lose marks in IB Maths and the sciences?

Marks in IB Maths follow the method. Write only a final number and credit can be thin; set out the steps and even a late slip leaves most marks intact. The Analysis and Approaches course leans on algebraic proof, while Applications and Interpretation leans on fitting models to data and explaining what they imply.

Each Maths course requires an Exploration, the student's own piece of mathematics worth a fifth of the grade. A tutor can help to trim a topic and confirm the maths, but planning and writing are for the student.

A Physics marker deducts for missing units, careless graphs and woolly wording. Chemistry rewards calculations laid out step by step. In Biology the verb in the question decides everything: outline, explain and evaluate each ask for a different depth.

Punjabi students are often fast and confident. A tutor adds care: timed papers marked against the real mark scheme show exactly which small habits cost marks.

08

Core or Extended, Foundation or Higher: choosing the IGCSE tier

In a Cambridge subject, Core papers stop at grade C while Extended unlocks A*. In Pearson's system, Foundation ends at 5 and Higher at 9. Anyone planning IB Maths HL or science Diploma subjects should aim for the upper tier from the start.

The tier is normally chosen by the school or centre that enters the student. Private candidates can test themselves under timed conditions to see which tier fits; a result right on the line is worth raising with the centre before the entry deadline.

Subjects should follow the career in mind. A future engineer builds on Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Computer Science. A student from a business family often adds Economics and Business Studies, and English as a Second Language supports later IELTS preparation.

Confirm the board, syllabus code and exam series before the first lesson, since preparation differs paper by paper.

Where we tutor

Phillaur and the Jalandhar-Ludhiana belt towns we teach online

A video lesson works the same from a street near the fort or from a village by the canal. What differs is the home routine: the GT Road traffic, the harvest, the evening power. The notes below show how families nearby tend to plan study.

Phillaur town

The old quarter by the junction and the police academy, home to traders and government employees; lessons begin after offices shut.

Sutlej bank and Phillaur bridge side

Homes near the river, where monsoon flood alerts and fog in winter can slow roads.

GT Road frontage

Houses and businesses along the national highway; noise suggests a headset for calls.

Phillaur railway junction area

Around the station, useful for boarders and commuters travelling to Ludhiana, Jalandhar or Chandigarh.

Apra and Goraya

Neighbouring towns on the highway, with schools and a mix of farming and NRI-linked families.

Nurmahal and Nakodar

Doaba towns to the north, whose students would otherwise travel far for a specialised class.

Ludhiana

The industrial city 20 km west, with Cambridge campuses and large coaching centres.

Jalandhar

The district headquarters 45 km east, known for sports goods and its international schools.

Ladhowal and Lohian side

Villages by the Sutlej crossing, with farm families and strong overseas links.

Chandigarh and Mohali

About two hours away, where families board children for IB Diploma options.

School ecosystem

    Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Phillaur: your questions answered

Is there an IB or IGCSE school in Phillaur?+

Not as far as we can verify. Phillaur schools teach the Punjab Board or CBSE syllabus, and the closest international campuses are in Ludhiana (about 20 km west) and Jalandhar (about 45 km east). Should a local school say otherwise, ask to see its authorisation and this year's subject list first.

Can I get IB home tuition in Phillaur?+

You can have online home tuition: a live, private lesson at the family desk with a specialist in another Indian city. Nobody travels to Phillaur. Teaching at the door exists only in Gurugram and parts of Delhi NCR, and we explain that before you book anything.

Do you have IGCSE tutors for Cambridge and Edexcel near Jalandhar?+

Both boards are covered, with every lesson on video in IST. We pair by paper code and tier, for instance Cambridge 0580 Mathematics or Edexcel 4MA1. Give us the board, the subject and the sitting, and the tutor we name will have taught that paper.

Will a tutor come to our house in Phillaur?+

No, our tutors never travel to Phillaur. Door-to-door tuition belongs to Gurugram and parts of Delhi NCR. In Phillaur the class is a live video call: a laptop or tablet, reliable internet and a quiet corner are enough, and the tutor reads each line of working on a shared page.

How much does IB or IGCSE tuition cost in Phillaur?+

The amount depends on how advanced the course is, the subject, the tutor's experience and the weekly hours, so we publish no figure. Once the free trial is done you get a written quote to compare with your coaching bills and with GT Road travel to Ludhiana.

Is the first lesson really free?+

It is. The tutor we propose teaches your child one complete class by video, with no charge and no promise from you. Only if you ask to continue do we send the rate in writing, and nothing is booked until you have read it.

We have relatives in Canada. Can IGCSE or the IB help my child's plans?+

They can. Universities and colleges in Canada, the UK and Australia read IB and IGCSE results routinely, and strong grades in sciences and English help. Rules for admission and visas change often, so check with each institution, while a tutor handles the subject work only.

My child is preparing for IELTS too. Can lessons fit?+

Yes, if the timetable is realistic. IGCSE English as a Second Language and IB English strengthen the reading, writing and speaking skills IELTS rewards, but they are separate exams. We can order lessons so that the academic subject work and any IELTS plan do not collide in busy weeks.

How do you handle winter fog and power cuts?+

Fog affects roads, not video, so evening classes at home continue. For power cuts we ask families to share dependable hours and to keep a phone hotspot ready. If a lesson stops early, a recap is sent and the remaining content is taught on another evening.

How far can a tutor help with the Internal Assessment or Extended Essay?+

Think of a tutor as a critical friend. They will hear the student's idea, question whether the plan can work, read the draft and say which marking criteria are still weak. Composing paragraphs, supplying data or smoothing the language is out of bounds, because the IB marks these pieces as the candidate's unaided work.

My child studies in a Punjabi-medium school. Can IB or IGCSE work?+

Yes, with groundwork. Numbers and experiments cross over quickly once English command words are learned; extended writing takes longer. Tutors start with vocabulary and paragraph structure, then move to full papers, and parents often notice progress within a month.

How do we choose between the two IB Maths courses?+

Pick by degree. Analysis and Approaches, built on calculus and proof, suits engineering, physics and mathematics. Applications and Interpretation, built on data and technology, suits business, economics, psychology and design. The school confirms the choice and we teach it.

Class 9 crossroads: IGCSE or CBSE?+

Work backwards from the goal. A JEE or NEET attempt is simpler on CBSE or the Punjab Board. The Diploma, a private campus or a degree overseas is better served by IGCSE. The trial lesson is a good moment to weigh both with a tutor.

Is our home internet good enough?+

Home broadband or a steady 4G signal is plenty for video and a digital board. Try a practice call the day before the first class. Where reception is patchy, we shorten the session and send a fuller written recap afterwards.

    How do we start?+

The quickest way in is WhatsApp on +91 7439 368 115 or an email to support@ibgram.com. Say which class the student is in, which board or programme applies, the subject and the school. You will hear back with a tutor's name and a proposed trial time, and the rest is up to you once the trial is done.

A short note naming the class, the board and the troublesome subject begins everything. In return you get a teacher who has handled that course, a free taster class and, only if you choose to go on, a fee in writing. Because the teacher is in another Indian city and the classroom is a laptop screen, no one in Phillaur has to battle GT Road traffic. We are at support@ibgram.com or on WhatsApp at +91 7439 368 115.
