IB & IGCSE in Perumbavoor

A plywood town on the Periyar, with Kochi's schools within a bus ride

Perumbavoor, in the east of the Kochi metropolitan area, stands on the Periyar about fourteen kilometres from Cochin International Airport and some thirty-four kilometres from the heart of Kochi. It is best known for timber and plywood, with over a thousand units reported, and its workforce includes many migrant workers from West Bengal, Assam, Bihar and Odisha. Nearby Kalady, birthplace of Adi Shankara, and Kuruppampady, with its Syrian cathedral, are part of the same community.

Unlike most small towns, Perumbavoor sits within real reach of international schools. Kochi has IB and IGCSE campuses such as Cochin International School at Pukkattupady, the Indian Public School at Kakkanad and Global Public School at Thiruvankulam, which some families reach by school bus. We could not confirm an IB or IGCSE school in Perumbavoor itself; the town's schools follow the Kerala State syllabus, CBSE and ICSE.

Those who search for IB and IGCSE tutors in Perumbavoor are therefore of two kinds. Some children already attend a Kochi international school and need subject support after a long bus ride. Others are planning, usually because of a relative abroad, a business that may expand overseas or a wish to keep options open. In both cases our lessons are online. Tutors do not visit Perumbavoor; home visits exist only in Gurugram and parts of Delhi NCR.

IB Gram is independent of every school, board and business named here. Tutors teach and mark but never write Internal Assessments, Extended Essays, TOK essays or coursework. Rates are agreed in writing, and results are never guaranteed.

At a glance

  • IB PYP, MYP, DP and CP, with the sciences and Maths most requested
  • Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel IGCSE at every tier

  • A free first lesson and a written note after each class
  • Online only in Perumbavoor; home visits run in Gurugram and parts of Delhi NCR alone
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to Perumbavoor school years

In Perumbavoor the four IB programmes arrive in different ways. Commuters to Kochi are inside one already; others are preparing to enter. What a tutor does differs accordingly.

PYPAges 3-12, nursery to Class 6

IB Primary Years Programme

Lessons grow out of big themes that children explore by asking questions, and the programme ends with a pupil-led Exhibition.

A Perumbavoor child in a Kochi PYP classroom often speaks Malayalam at home, so we support English reading and spoken confidence after the school day.

MYPAges 11-16, Class 6 to 10

IB Middle Years Programme

Every subject is graded on published criteria, units connect subjects through global contexts, and a Personal Project closes the programme. Planning, research and reflection count alongside facts.

MYP students commuting from Perumbavoor often arrive home late, so lessons are short, targeted and scheduled on lighter evenings.

DPClass 11-12, ages 16-19

IB Diploma Programme

A Diploma candidate takes three subjects at Higher Level and three at Standard, writes an Extended Essay, studies Theory of Knowledge and logs CAS activities. Most of the grade comes from papers written in May, while the Internal Assessments make up the rest

A Perumbavoor Diploma student may attend a Kochi school or study online. Tuition helps most in Maths, Chemistry, Physics and English, and in managing the IA calendar.

CPClass 11-12, ages 16-19

IB Career-related Programme

A short list of Diploma courses is paired with a career-related study and a reflective project. Few Indian schools run it, but its academic courses are examined to Diploma standard.

CP requests from Ernakulam district are infrequent and usually concern a single academic course.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around Perumbavoor school timetables

Perumbavoor has one delivery mode, a live video lesson, used in three ways: support after a Kochi school day, a bridge before a move into an IB or IGCSE class, and an exam push.

Support after a Kochi school day

A child who commutes by school bus joins a short lesson on a quieter evening, targeting the topics that went by too quickly in class.

  • Forty-five to sixty minutes
  • Homework review
  • Flexible rescheduling on late-bus days
  • A few lines for parents afterwards

Bridge before joining an IB or IGCSE class

For a child planning to enter a Kochi international school, a few months of preparation lift English, Maths and Science towards the new pace.

  • A first lesson to locate gaps
  • Practice with sample papers
  • Spoken English
  • Monthly review with the family

Exam-season push

More classes of shorter length in the weeks ahead of the May or November papers, built on timed practice and quick marking, and set around the rains.

  • Mock papers marked to boundaries
  • Topic clinics
  • A backup plan for power cuts
  • Rest before each paper

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Perumbavoor

01

Can a Perumbavoor student attend an IB or IGCSE school, or must they move?

  • Kochi's IB and IGCSE campuses are within school-bus range for some
  • The daily ride is long, so evening help should be short and targeted
  • Local schools are Kerala State, CBSE or ICSE
  • Tuition lets a child test the style before committing

Perumbavoor is unusual among small towns because the Kochi metropolitan area has several listed IB and IGCSE schools within school-bus range. Cochin International School at Pukkattupady, the Indian Public School at Kakkanad and Global Public School at Thiruvankulam all appear in public listings. A bus ride of an hour or more each way is common for children who study there.

That ride defines the family's day. Children leave early, return in late afternoon and start homework tired. A Diploma student with Internal Assessments, an Extended Essay and CAS to manage feels this most. An evening lesson with a specialist can turn a vague worry into a plan.

Within Perumbavoor itself, we could not confirm an IB or IGCSE school. The town's schools follow the Kerala State syllabus, CBSE and ICSE. Families who want an international classroom must commute, board or relocate, and many weigh it carefully.

For those not ready, online tuition is a way to test the style at home. A free first lesson shows whether the child enjoys explaining reasoning, which is the core of both programmes.

02

How do the Kerala State syllabus, CBSE, IB and IGCSE compare for a Perumbavoor child?

Under the Kerala State syllabus pupils study in Malayalam or English, sit the SSLC in March and then move to Higher Secondary.

Children from Kerala schools bring strengths that international examiners reward: wide reading, fluent English comprehension and tidy writing. The shift is in style. An IB marker credits reasoning, evaluation and exact vocabulary, and a correct answer with no method often earns little.

Calendar differences matter as well. The Kerala academic year runs June to March, while Kochi's IB and CBSE schools usually start in April. A child who switches mid-stream may meet topics in a different order, and a tutor can plan around the overlap.

The table lays out the four systems for a Perumbavoor household.

What makes up the price of IB or IGCSE tuition near Kochi?

  • Course and level
  • Lessons per week
  • Number of subjects
  • Short bridge or long plan
  • No travel through Kochi traffic

No fee table appears here, because a number on a web page would suit very few families. A written quote reaches you after the free lesson and before you commit, and the factors behind it are straightforward.

The course comes first. A tutor for HL Chemistry or Extended Maths is a rarer specialist than one for primary reading, and the rate follows the profile. Frequency comes second: three lessons a week before an exam cost more per month than one weekly.

Each subject usually has its own tutor, so subjects multiply the total. Duration matters too, because a short bridge is a smaller commitment than two Diploma years. Most families do better with a steady weekly plan than with a rush.

Online delivery saves the cost of driving into Kochi for evening classes, in a region where traffic on the Aluva and Edapally roads is notorious. For an estimate, message +91 7439 368 115.

04

Which suits Perumbavoor better: online lessons, a Kochi tuition centre, a local tutor or self-study?

Kochi has more IB and IGCSE tutors than most Indian cities, in centres and as private teachers, and some will travel. The difficulty is the journey. From Perumbavoor to Edapally or Kakkanad in evening traffic can take well over an hour, which a tired child does not need after a long school day.

A local tutor in Perumbavoor suits foundation work in early classes and school-level revision. Few have taught IB or Cambridge papers, so for Diploma courses the specialism is often missing.

Online one-to-one tuition removes the journey and widens the pool. It needs a laptop, a quiet corner and a working connection. In the Periyar belt, heavy rain can cut power, and the 2018 floods that affected Aluva, Kalady and Perumbavoor remain in memory, so we keep slots flexible.

Self-study with free past papers is a useful supplement. Without a tutor, a student cannot see why marks were lost, so most combine the two.

How do Onam, the monsoon and the Periyar's floods shape the year in Perumbavoor?

Kerala's rains arrive twice. The southwest monsoon from June to August is the heavy one, and the northeast rains in October and November follow. The Periyar swells during the main monsoon, and in August 2018 flooding hit the river belt from Aluva through Kalady and Perumbavoor, an event families still plan around. Power cuts are common in heavy rain.

Festivals set the family calendar. Onam, in August or September, brings a ten-day celebration and school holidays. Vishu in April marks the new year, and Christmas and Easter are major for the large Christian community. Eid is observed by Muslim families, and temple festivals fill the winter months.

Kerala schools work from June to March and hold SSLC and Plus Two in March. The IB Diploma is written in May and November, Cambridge IGCSE in May-June and October-November, and Edexcel in January and May-June. A child in a Kochi IB school follows the international dates.

The table combines them.

06

Where can a Perumbavoor student study after IB or IGCSE?

  • CUSAT, Rajagiri and other Kochi institutions
  • CUET-UG and AIU equivalence for IB Diploma holders
  • NEET-UG, JEE Main and KEAM: confirm current eligibility
  • UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia and the Gulf for study and work

Kochi holds CUSAT, Maharaja's College, Rajagiri and a number of private universities, and Kalady is home to Sree Sankara Sanskrit University and the wider state has the University of Kerala, MG University, NIT Calicut, IIT Palakkad and IISER Thiruvananthapuram. IB Diploma holders depend on Association of Indian Universities equivalence for many Indian admissions, and central universities admit through CUET-UG. Each institution sets its own rules.

Medicine and engineering use separate entrances. NEET-UG, JEE Main and Kerala's KEAM state rules about subjects, boards and domicile, and the rules shift each year. An IB student with suitable sciences is often eligible, though the family has to check the current notice

A good number of Perumbavoor households have a brother in Dubai, a sister nursing in Dublin or cousins in Toronto, and those countries know the IB Diploma and the IGCSE-to-A-Level route well. Applications can call for English tests, and American universities ask for the SAT or ACT. We teach the school subjects, point you to our test preparation page and leave the applications to you

Choose Class 11 subjects with the end in mind: Biology and Chemistry for nursing and medicine, Maths AA HL with Physics for engineering, Design Technology for product design, and Economics with Business for commerce and family enterprise.

07

How do we handle the Internal Assessment and Extended Essay calendar for a commuting student?

Diploma students from Perumbavoor face a crowded timetable: long bus rides, six subjects, Internal Assessments in most of them, an Extended Essay of about four thousand words, CAS and Theory of Knowledge. Missing a deadline is more often a planning problem than a knowledge problem.

A tutor can help with the plan without touching the work. We work backwards from the school's deadlines, split each task into small steps, and use weekly lessons to check progress. For a science IA, we talk through the research question, the variables and the uncertainty. For the Extended Essay, we discuss the research question and structure. We never write or edit any part.

In Maths, the exploration needs a topic the student can really measure, and starting early avoids a rush. In English, the individual oral needs rehearsal that sounds like thinking, not a script.

When a bus delay or a power cut ends a lesson early, it is rescheduled within the week where possible, and a short note after each class keeps parents in the loop.

08

Choosing IGCSE tiers and subjects from Ernakulam district

In most Cambridge subjects there is a Core paper and an Extended one; Edexcel has Foundation and Higher. The lower route limits the best available grade, so anyone eyeing Diploma sciences or A Level Maths should aim at the upper route.

Five to nine subjects is normal: English, Maths, sciences, a language and a couple of electives. Business families often add Accounting or Business Studies, and those with overseas plans add Computer Science or Economics. Availability of Malayalam depends on the board and school.

A private candidate must register through an approved exam centre, and in Ernakulam those are mostly in Kochi. Entry deadlines fall several months ahead of each series and the fee is paid to the centre. We handle the revision plan and the calendar.

An extra paper in Additional Mathematics gives future engineers an early taste of calculus. It is optional, and we agree with the family, a few lessons in, whether the extra load is wise.

    Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Perumbavoor: your questions answered

Can I find an IB tutor in Perumbavoor?+

You can, on screen. Your child stays in the sitting room in Perumbavoor and a teacher of the particular IB subject appears on the laptop, live. We do not send people to Perumbavoor homes; that service is only for Gurugram and parts of Delhi NCR. Lesson one is free

Is there an IB or IGCSE school in Perumbavoor?+

We could not confirm one in the town. Local schools follow the Kerala State syllabus, CBSE or ICSE. Public listings show IB and IGCSE schools in Kochi, such as Cochin International School at Pukkattupady and the Indian Public School at Kakkanad. Please confirm any school's current status before applying.

Do you offer IGCSE home tuition in Perumbavoor?+

In the sense of private lessons taken at home, yes, with the teacher appearing on a monitor.

    What will it cost?+

You will not find a rate card here. What you pay turns on the level of the course, how many subjects, how often you meet and for how many months,

My child studies at a Kochi school and gets home late. Does evening tuition make sense?+

Yes, if it is short and well targeted. Lessons of forty-five to sixty minutes on lighter evenings work for many commuting students, and we reschedule when a bus is late. Weekend sessions are an alternative before exams.

Will rain and power cuts interrupt lessons?+

They can, mostly when the monsoon turns fierce. Pick the evening hour when your electricity is most reliable, keep a charged phone to use as a hotspot and let the teacher know the moment the picture freezes. Anything lost to a storm is made up later in the week for free

Which IB subjects are asked for most from Ernakulam district?+

Expect Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology at the top, then Economics and Business Management.

Can the tutor write the IA or Extended Essay?+

Never. Ghost-writing anything that is graded would be malpractice in the IB's eyes, so we decline it outright. What a tutor will do is explain

    When are the exams?+

Diploma papers in most Indian IB schools come in May, with some candidates writing in November. Cambridge offers May-June and October-November, Edexcel January and May-June, and Kerala's SSLC lands in March. Your school will confirm the days

Is the IB Diploma accepted for Indian universities?+

By and large, yes: the AIU certifies equivalence and central universities take CUET-UG scores. Kerala's professional courses set separate conditions, so write to the institution before picking subjects

Can an IB student take NEET, JEE Main or KEAM?+

Often, yet the rules on subjects, recognised boards and domicile are revised. Download the newest notice from the testing agency or from Kerala's admission authority long before applications open

How do we book the free lesson?+

To begin, send us a WhatsApp on +91 7439 368 115 or an email at support@ibgram.com saying which class your child is in, the board, the subject and the evenings you can spare. We reply with a tutor and a time. When the trial hour ends you receive the plan and the rate in writing, and nothing is expected of you

What if the tutor is not right for my child?+

Tell us after a lesson or two and we will arrange another tutor, usually within days and at no cost. A better fit matters more than finishing a plan.

Is IB Gram linked to any school or board?+

It is not. We run independently, with no arrangement with schools in Perumbavoor or Kochi, with the IB, with Cambridge or with Pearson.

    Can young children join online?+

Very much so, in a gentler format. Little ones in the PYP age band meet a tutor for half an hour or so, with picture cards, short stories and counting games, and an adult stays within earshot. Reading aloud comes first, and you get a few lines on the day's work
