IB + IGCSE
Mumbai, Maharashtra
If you searched for the top IB tutors in Mumbai, you were looking for a list that does not exist. No board, school or authority ranks tutors. What you can get instead is a shortlist of checked IB and IGCSE home tutors matched to one child's subjects, level and address, with the reasoning for each name shown to you.
School names are shown for local academic context only. IB Gram is an independent tutoring platform and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or representing any school listed here.
Verified IB tutors available across Mumbai for PYP, MYP and the Diploma Programme.

IB Gram reads your request, filters its tutor pool by programme, subject and level, and sends you two or three profiles with the reasoning written beside each one. There is no published list of the top IB tutors in Mumbai for anyone to draw from, so a shortlist here is assembled from what you tell us about one child, not lifted from a ranking that somebody else compiled and sold space on.
The requests that produce a useful shortlist are specific. A parent who writes that their child is in Diploma Programme (DP) Year 1 at a school in Bandra, takes Mathematics Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level (HL), is fine with calculus and lost on vectors, and is free after seven on Tuesday and Thursday, gets a sharper answer than a parent who writes only that they want an IB home tutor in Mumbai. The second request is still answerable, but only by guessing at the five things the first one stated outright.
What we do next is deliberately unglamorous. We look for tutors who have taught that exact component rather than the subject in general, because a teacher who has marked thirty Mathematics Analysis and Approaches HL Internal Assessments (IAs) knows things about the exploration criteria that a strong graduate mathematician does not. Then we look at the map and the clock, because a tutor who cannot hold a standing weekly slot at your address through a Mumbai evening is not a match however good they are on paper.
You are told what each profile is missing as well as what it has. A tutor might be excellent on DP Chemistry paper two and have never supervised an Extended Essay (EE). Another might be strong across both boards but only free at eight on a Saturday morning. Those gaps are the useful part of a shortlist, and they are exactly what a ranked list of names would hide from you.
A recommendation almost never says which programme it refers to, which is the first reason it travels badly. The International Baccalaureate (IB) runs three distinct programmes in the city: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the Diploma Programme (DP). Alongside them, the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is offered under Cambridge International Education and, at some schools, Pearson Edexcel. A tutor can be genuinely good at one of these and useless at another.
The gap between MYP and DP is where most misplaced reputations sit. An MYP Year 5 parent who tells you a tutor is wonderful at Mathematics is describing somebody who got a child comfortable with criteria A to D, investigation write-ups and a fairly forgiving mark band structure. DP Mathematics Analysis and Approaches HL is a different job: a two-year course with timed papers, a graphical display calculator paper, and an exploration marked against five criteria where the commonest loss is not mathematics at all but personal engagement and reflection. The same name on a parent group list covers both, and the group rarely notices.
IGCSE adds a tier decision that a reputation says nothing about. Mathematics, the sciences and several languages are split into Core and Extended, and the Extended papers reach grades the Core papers cannot award. A tutor who has spent three years taking students through Core Mathematics is not automatically the right person for a child who has just been moved up to Extended in Year 10 and now faces functions, vectors and histogram work they have never seen. Ask which tier the recommending family sat, and the recommendation either firms up or dissolves.
PYP sits outside this entirely. There are no external exams, so there is no shared yardstick for a tutor's effect, and a PYP recommendation is really a report on whether a child enjoyed the sessions. That is worth something. It is not evidence about a DP outcome five years later, and treating it as such is how a reputation outlives the thing it was built on.
Across all IB and IGCSE subjects a tutor in Mumbai might teach, reputation is distributed very unevenly, and not in proportion to quality. Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Economics generate most of the names that circulate, because most families need them and most families talk about them. Visual Arts, Theatre, Film, Global Politics, Japanese B, Further Mathematics HL, IGCSE Latin, IGCSE Music and IGCSE Computer Science generate almost none, because the cohorts are small and no critical mass of parents ever compares notes.
That silence is misread constantly. A single sibling recommendation is asked to cover all IB and IGCSE subjects in home classes Mumbai families book, which it cannot, and the subjects nobody mentions are assumed to have no good tutors. The opposite is usually true. The person who really can teach DP Film is often working at capacity from one school's referrals and has never needed to be visible. By the time a parent in Kandivali hears the name in December, the Thursday evening slot went in June.
The internal assessments are where subject-specific skill shows up or fails to. A DP Physics IA lives or dies on a research question narrow enough to vary one thing properly, and on uncertainty treatment: error bars that come from a stated instrument resolution, a gradient uncertainty taken from a worst-acceptable-line, a conclusion that does not claim more than the data supports. A DP Business Management IA is a wholly different exercise in using real company evidence against a chosen tool. A DP Economics commentary set must span three different units and stay inside a tight word limit. Nobody is fluent in all of these, and the tutor who claims to be is telling you something.
So the honest question about a subject is not who is the strongest tutor but who has taught this component recently. For IGCSE Mathematics 0580 Extended, that means somebody who knows which topics the paper four questions reliably return to. For DP English A Language and Literature HL, somebody who has marked the HL essay and can explain why a line of argument about a non-literary body of work loses marks for drifting into summary. Recency and component beat reputation every time.
Reputation does not circulate the same way in every part of Mumbai, Maharashtra, because the containers are different. In South Mumbai the container is the school cohort and the building. Families in Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Walkeshwar, Peddar Road, Tardeo and Worli sit in small year groups at schools like the Cathedral and John Connon School, B.D. Somani International School, Bombay International School and Aditya Birla World Academy, and a tutor's name moves five or six families at a time over coffee. Distances are short and still slow: Worli to Colaba is a handful of kilometres and can take forty minutes once the Peddar Road and Haji Ali signals back up, which is why tutors are matched within the island rather than brought down the Western Line or the Coastal Road from the suburbs.
The Western Suburbs work on school groups and the Western Express Highway. Bandra, Khar West, Santacruz, Juhu, Andheri West, Goregaon, Malad, Kandivali, Borivali and Dahisar feed Dhirubhai Ambani International School, the American School of Bombay, Ecole Mondiale World School, Jamnabai Narsee International School, Oberoi International School and JBCN International School, Borivali, and a name that lands in one of those parent groups can reach several hundred families in a week. Matching along the corridor works and matching across it does not: Khar to Santacruz or Malad to Kandivali is fine, while Bandra to Borivali at six in the evening is a term of missed sessions waiting to happen. Metro Lines 2A and 7 have changed that arithmetic for tutors who are willing to use them.
The Central Suburbs and the Eastern Suburbs run on society groups more than school groups. Powai and Chandivali have no station of their own, so tutors arrive by road from Andheri East, Kanjurmarg or Ghatkopar along JVLR, and a complex like Hiranandani Gardens circulates tutor names in its own building groups faster than any school does, with Hiranandani Foundation School setting the calendar. Further east, Chembur, Govandi, Wadala, Vikhroli, Bhandup and Mulund sit on the Central and Harbour lines and the Eastern Express Highway, with the Eastern Freeway making South Mumbai far closer to Chembur than the map suggests, and NES International School, Mulund West and JBCN International School, Chembur anchoring the local cohorts. Searches such as "IB tutors near me Mumbai" are usually really asking which of these containers a family belongs to.
Navi Mumbai and Thane are node and corridor stories. Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar and Panvel each talk mostly to themselves across Palm Beach Road and the Sion-Panvel Highway, with D.Y. Patil International School in Nerul a common reference point, and the Harbour Line, the Trans-Harbour Line, the Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 and now the Atal Setu set what is reachable. Thane spreads from the station out along Pokhran Road, Majiwada and Ghodbunder Road to Kasarvadavali, and Ghodbunder sets the timetable: twenty minutes off-peak, close to an hour in the evening. One home tutor for all IB and IGCSE subjects Mumbai schools offer is never a realistic request, and across the creek or across Ghodbunder it is less realistic still. A parent in Kharghar and a parent in Khar West both search for the top IB tutors in Mumbai and are shown the same ten results, which is the clearest evidence that the results are not about either of them.
The school parent group is where most families in Mumbai first hear a tutor's name, and it is worth understanding what that signal is actually made of. It samples one cohort at one school. It is weighted towards the parents who post, who are not a random selection. It records who was available when somebody asked, and availability at the right moment is not the same as being effective. And it credits whoever was in the room when a confident, well-organised child did well, which is the single largest distortion in tutoring word of mouth anywhere.
The calendar explains why the group gets loud at the same points every year. For a DP cohort sitting May exams, the pressure arrives in November and December as IAs come due across six subjects at once, with the Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) essay landing in the same stretch. January and February bring mock exams and final IA submissions together. For IGCSE students, coursework and practical components bunch between January and March before the May and June series. October half-term and the Diwali break get booked out months ahead because everyone discovers the same gap at the same time, and the monsoon between June and September quietly reshapes every evening travel plan in the city.
So a name that surfaces in a Juhu or BKC parent group in November is a name that was free in November, which often means they are newer, or teaching fewer students, or have just lost one. None of that is disqualifying. It is simply not the information the group thinks it is passing on. The strongest signal in those threads is usually the quiet one: a subject teacher's aside that a particular person is good with a student who has stopped asking questions in class, or a sibling's old tutor whose effect you watched yourself for two years.
Naming schools here is local context and nothing more. IB Gram is an independent platform. We are not affiliated with any school, board or examining body named on this page, and when we mention Utpal Shanghvi Global School, Thakur International School, Kandivali East or Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania School in Thane, we are describing where Mumbai families study and what their calendars demand, not any relationship of ours.
When a family passes you a name, ask how their child was taught, because IB home tuition in Mumbai and online lessons with the same person are two different services and often two different levels of skill. A tutor can be outstanding in a living room in Khar West, reading a child's face and catching the moment attention goes, and ordinary on a screen where none of that is visible. Another is the reverse: sharper with a shared document and an annotated past paper than they ever were across a dining table.
Home tutoring is the lead option for most of these requests, and the reasons are practical. A tutor in the room controls the phone, sees the actual notebook rather than a reported version of it, and can work through a full past paper under something like exam conditions. For a DP Year 2 student in Powai with a Physics IA draft due the same fortnight as the TOK essay, the person sitting beside them can triage in a way nobody can from a video call. The costs are travel and rigidity: the slot has to survive JVLR, the Western Express Highway or Ghodbunder Road every single week, and a cancelled session is much harder to recover.
An IB online tutor in Mumbai solves exactly those problems. The pool stops being a thirty-minute radius and becomes the whole city, which matters enormously for Further Mathematics HL, DP Film or IGCSE Latin, where the right person may simply not live on your line. Sessions start on time and survive the monsoon. What online loses is the periphery: a child can look engaged and be elsewhere, younger students drift faster, and diagram-heavy subjects need a tablet and stylus rather than a laptop trackpad or the whole thing degrades into dictation.
Hybrid is what most families settle into without planning it. One home session a week for the hard, sit-down work, one online session for marking, question practice and checking that last week's correction was actually done. It also makes the match durable: a tutor who cannot cross from Chembur to Nerul twice a week can usually do it once. A recommendation rarely specifies any of this, so the top IB tutors in Mumbai for one family may be unavailable in the only format another family can realistically run.
Nobody maintains a register. No examining board, no school and no government office certifies or ranks the top IB tutors in Mumbai, and there is no licence to hold or lose. This is the structural fact that every search result for this phrase is quietly working around, and it is why any page claiming to have ranked the city's tutors has either invented the criteria or sold the positions. Parents who type "best IB tutor in Mumbai" are looking for an authority that was never created.
What IB Gram checks is narrow and stated plainly: identity, the qualifications a tutor claims, which syllabus and which components they have actually taught, and references from earlier teaching where they exist. We also check the thing most lists ignore, which is whether the tutor can hold the slot you need for a whole term rather than the first three weeks. What we do not do is rate tutors against each other, publish a league table or let anyone buy a place on a shortlist, because a ranked position is a claim about outcomes and we do not guarantee grades. No tutor can.
The rest of the checking is yours, and it is the part a reputation cannot do for you. Ask to see a marked piece of the tutor's own students' work with the mark scheme beside it, and watch whether the tutor talks about criteria or about effort. Ask which syllabus version they teach from, because a Cambridge syllabus that changed three years ago still has old papers circulating. Ask what they do in the first session, and listen for diagnosis rather than a lecture. An IB private tutor Mumbai parents pass around by name should answer all three without hesitating.
One more check costs nothing and settles most doubt. Ask the tutor to describe a student they could not help. A teacher with real classroom years will have a specific, slightly uncomfortable answer about a mismatch of pace or a problem that was never academic. A tutor who has no such story either has not taught enough students or is not being straight with you, and both are worth knowing before the first standing Tuesday slot is booked.
Treat it as a lead, not a verdict, and spend ten minutes turning it into evidence. Three questions do almost all of the work. First, what exactly did your child need when you started, because a tutor who rebuilt a Year 9 student's algebra is being recommended for something your DP Year 2 child may not need at all. Second, what changed, and how do you know, which should produce a component, a criterion or a paper rather than a feeling. Third, what did the tutor do when it was not working, because every real tutoring relationship has a bad month and the answer tells you whether this person adapts or repeats.
Those questions also expose the structural bias in word of mouth. Recommendations favour the tutor of already-confident students, because their results look like teaching. They favour the tutor who happened to have a Thursday evening free when a panicking parent asked. They favour the tutor who is pleasant to deal with, answers messages quickly and gets on with the family, none of which is the same as being effective, and some of which actively hides ineffectiveness for a term or two. And they systematically miss the person who is genuinely excellent in a thin subject, because that tutor has been full since July and nobody has had a free slot to report on.
It is worth imagining how a ranked table would behave if one existed, because the answer explains why none is credible. Placement would go to whoever had the budget or the volume to farm reviews. Tutors would select for students likely to score well and decline the ones who need the most help, since a declined student cannot damage a published average. Group classes would be reported as individual results. Cohorts would be cherry-picked by subject and level. Within a term, the list would rank marketing capacity rather than teaching, and the quiet specialist who takes the hardest cases would sit at the bottom of it.
The last thing a recommendation cannot tell you is price, and parents should not expect it to. IB tuition fees in Mumbai depend on the board and the level, on how scarce the subject is, on how far the tutor travels and through which corridor, on session length and frequency, and on whether the work is ongoing teaching or concentrated IA and exam support. A rate that made sense for a neighbour's IGCSE Core Mathematics in Mulund tells you very little about DP Further Mathematics HL in Belapur, and a tutor who quotes identically for both has not understood either.
A reputation is worth a first meeting and nothing beyond it, and the only evidence that matters afterwards is what you can see in your own house. At four weeks you should not expect a mark to move. What you should see is diagnosis: the tutor can tell you which three specific things are wrong, in syllabus language, and the homework they set is aimed at those three things rather than whatever came next in the textbook. Your child should be able to say what they are currently bad at. If nobody can answer that at four weeks, the match is the problem, not the effort.
By the end of a term the evidence should be on paper. A DP student should have an IA that has been drafted, criticised against the criteria and redrafted at least once. An IGCSE student should have sat two or three full past papers under time and be able to point to the question types that still cost them marks. Timed-paper performance should have narrowed the gap with homework performance, because that gap is where most grades are actually lost. You should also be able to see topics closed off: vectors understood in October and still intact in December.
Across a full exam cycle, the honest expectation is that good teaching improves the chance of a better outcome and changes nothing with certainty. We do not guarantee grades, and a tutor who does is making a claim about an examiner they have never met, in a session they will not be in. Illness, a bad paper, a subject chosen for the wrong reasons and a child who did not want this in the first place all sit outside anybody's control, and a tutor's real contribution is to remove the losses that were avoidable.
If a home tuition arrangement is not working, say so early, and do not wait out of politeness. Tell us what you are seeing, in specifics: sessions that drift, homework never checked, a child who has gone quiet. A replacement is a normal event, not a complaint, and it goes faster when the reason is concrete, because the next shortlist is built to avoid that exact failure. Changing tutor mid-DP costs a few weeks of rebuilding rapport, which is real, and is almost always cheaper than finishing a year with somebody your child has stopped listening to.
Four things make the first home tutor shortlist good. The subject and the exact level, written as the school writes it, so Mathematics Applications and Interpretations SL rather than just Maths. The school and the session year, because a May cohort and a November cohort are at different points of the same syllabus. Your locality and your building, since a tutor who can reach Nerul from Belapur every Wednesday is a different person from one who would have to leave Bandra at five. And the slots that genuinely work for your family after homework, sport and dinner, not the slots that work in theory.
Send the last two assessments as well, even the bad one, especially the bad one. A marked paper with the examiner's or teacher's comments tells a tutor more in ninety seconds than a page of description, and it is the difference between a first session spent diagnosing and a first session spent asking questions you already answered. If there is a report comment about effort or organisation rather than ability, send that too, because it changes who the right tutor is.
The first session should feel like an assessment and not a lesson. Expect the tutor to work through a recent paper with your child, stop at the places where the reasoning breaks rather than where the answer is wrong, and finish by naming what they will target first and how you will know in a month whether it worked. Expect a short conversation with you at the end, not a sales summary. If the session was ninety per cent tutor talking, that is information about the next eleven months.
Then decide on what you saw, not on where the name came from. The parent group, the society thread, the sibling's old tutor and the teacher's aside are all useful starting points and none of them is a verdict about your child. A tutor who was right for a confident DP Economics student in Goregaon may be wrong for a quiet Year 10 student in Chembur who needs somebody to slow down and insist on writing the method out in full.
No, and there never has been. The International Baccalaureate does not certify, register or rank private tutors, no school publishes an approved list, and no government body licenses them, so any ranked table of the top IB tutors in Mumbai was assembled by whoever benefits from its order. The useful alternative is not a better list but a different question: which tutor has taught this exact subject, at this level, recently, and can reach your home every week. That question has a checkable answer. A ranking does not.
Book a conversation, not a term. A name that recurs in a parent group tells you the tutor was available when people asked, is pleasant to deal with and taught children at one school, which is genuinely worth something. It does not tell you they have taught your child's subject at your child's level, or that the results people credit them with were not mostly down to already-organised students. Ask the recommending parent what their child needed at the start, what specifically changed, and what the tutor did during the bad month.
Yes, if the match is made along the right corridor. Thane tutors generally cover Thane, and the deciding factor is Ghodbunder Road: a tutor living near the station reaches Kasarvadavali in about twenty minutes off-peak and nearly an hour in the evening peak, so a seven o'clock slot in Kasarvadavali needs somebody based west of Majiwada or willing to leave very early. Mulund-based tutors sometimes cross over on the Eastern Express Highway. We would rather tell you a slot is unsustainable now than watch it collapse in week five.
Most Mumbai complexes want the tutor registered once rather than signed in weekly, and that is worth arranging before the first session. Give your society office the tutor's name, phone number and the standing day and time, and ask whether they issue a recurring visitor pass or expect an app-based approval each visit. In large complexes such as Hiranandani Gardens in Powai, gate-to-door can add ten minutes, so build it into the slot. Also decide where the session happens: a dining table with the phone elsewhere beats a bedroom, every time.
They depend on board and level, subject scarcity, travel, session length and the kind of work. Higher Level Diploma Programme subjects cost more than IGCSE Core, a Further Mathematics HL or DP Film tutor is scarcer than a DP Business Management tutor, and a tutor crossing a corridor at peak hour prices the travel in. Intensive IA or pre-mock support is priced differently from ongoing weekly teaching. We will not quote you a figure on a page, because any number printed here would be wrong for most families reading it.
Take it as useful information and move on quickly. A tutor being full in September is the most reliable positive signal in this market, and it is also why the names in circulation are so often unavailable. Ask that tutor directly whether they can take a fortnightly slot or online marking sessions, and ask who they would send a student to, since good tutors know the other good tutors in their subject. Meanwhile let us shortlist by component rather than by name. The person with no reputation yet is frequently the better available option.
For most senior students it works nearly as well, and for scarce subjects it works better. Online removes travel, survives the monsoon and opens the whole city, which matters when the right DP Film or IGCSE Latin teacher does not live on your line. It is weaker for younger students, for children who drift without someone in the room, and for diagram-heavy work without a tablet and stylus. Many families run one home session for the hard sit-down work and one online session for marking and question practice, which holds up well across a term.
Rarely for a weekly home slot, and the Atal Setu has not changed that as much as people hope. A tutor crossing from the island city to Vashi, Nerul or Kharghar for a weekday evening session is committing to a trip that fails the first time something goes wrong on the Sion-Panvel Highway, and matches like that tend not to survive a full term. Either run that tutor online, or let us match node to node inside Navi Mumbai, where Palm Beach Road and the Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 keep travel honest.
Marks moving in four weeks would be unusual; a clear diagnosis not existing by then is the real warning sign. At the one-month point the tutor should be able to name three specific weaknesses in syllabus language, the homework should target those three things, and your child should be able to tell you what they are currently bad at. If none of that is true, raise it now rather than at the end of term. Tell us what you are seeing in specifics and we will either reset the plan with the same tutor or shortlist again.
Tell us, in concrete terms, and we build the next shortlist around that failure. Say that sessions drift into chat, or homework is never checked, or your child has gone quiet, rather than saying it is not clicking. A replacement is a routine event and not a complaint, and the specifics make the second match materially better. Changing tutor mid-Diploma does cost a few weeks of rebuilding rapport, which is a genuine loss, and it is still cheaper than finishing a year with somebody your child has stopped listening to.
No. We do not guarantee grades, we do not keep a strongest tutor to assign, and anyone promising a specific score is making a claim about an examiner they have never met. What good teaching does is remove avoidable losses: an IA that ignores a criterion, timed papers never practised under time, a topic quietly skipped in Year 1. Illness, a difficult paper and a subject chosen for the wrong reasons sit outside anybody's control. IB Gram is an independent platform and cannot promise outcomes it does not control.
Send us the subject and exact level, the school and exam session, your locality and building, the slots that genuinely work, and the last two marked assessments. You will get two or three profiles with the component each tutor has taught and what each one lacks, plus an honest note on whether the travel holds up every week. Speak to them, book one session, and judge it on the diagnosis.
