IGCSE May June Exam Preparation in Mumbai

IGCSE May and June exam preparation in Mumbai works backwards from the timetable, not forwards from goodwill. This page sets out what each remaining month is for, where school mocks sit, when teaching has to stop and revision start, and what home tuition can realistically do if you are starting in February.

Tutors matched on series experience, not only on distance from your building.
Profiles show which papers and components the tutor has actually taught.

How IB Gram turns a May series request into a Mumbai shortlist

Most enquiries about IGCSE May and June exam preparation in Mumbai arrive as one line: Year 11, needs help, exams are in May. That is not enough to match on, and the gap between that line and a usable brief is where the first conversation goes. We ask four things. Which board the school entered your child for, because Cambridge International Education and Pearson Edexcel set different papers for subjects with the same name. Which tier, where the subject has tiers. Which subjects are actually in trouble, as opposed to the ones that feel uncomfortable. And the week your school releases Year 11 for study leave, because that date decides whether the last stretch is evening work or daytime work.

With those four answers a shortlist takes shape quickly. A brief that reads all IB and IGCSE subjects means a tutor in Mumbai covering five courses at once, which is almost never what a family actually needs in the final year. A request for an IGCSE home tutor in Mumbai who has taught the May series before is a narrower ask than it sounds: a tutor who has only ever taught the Years 9 and 10 part of the course has never watched a candidate under timetable pressure, never marked a full paper against the published mark scheme, and has no feel for how much ground a student can cover in a fortnight. Teaching history at paper and component level is the first filter we apply.

The second filter is geography, and in this city it is a hard constraint rather than a preference. A tutor in Nerul and a family in Khar West can agree on everything and still lose the arrangement by the fourth week, because the crossing is ninety minutes each way at the wrong hour. We match within the corridor first and only widen the search when a subject is genuinely scarce, at which point the honest answer is often online rather than a heroic commute nobody sustains through April.

  • 1. Send the board, the subject list and your child's school name.
  • 2. We filter for tutors who have taught the May series itself.
  • 3. You receive two or three profiles with paper-level teaching history.
  • 4. A first session produces a written gap list before any term is booked.
  • 5. Tell us within two sessions if the fit is wrong and we re-match.

Which IGCSE pathway is your child actually sitting in May?

Establish which course your child is entered for before you buy a single hour of tuition. In Mumbai this is less obvious than parents expect. Some schools run Cambridge IGCSE, some run the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE, and a number of schools enter candidates for both across different subjects, so a Year 11 student can be sitting a Cambridge science paper and an Edexcel mathematics paper in the same series. Several subjects also have tiers or routes, where one entry caps the available grades and the other opens the full range. Your school's examinations officer holds the entry record and can tell you exactly what was submitted. Ask for it in writing.

The pathway question also decides what the May series means for the year after. A student heading into the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) is choosing Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL) subjects during the same months as the run-up, often before any IGCSE result exists, which is why the Higher Level shortlist is built on mock performance and teacher judgement rather than on a grade in hand. A student moving to A Levels or to an Indian board faces a different conversation, with different subject prerequisites set by the receiving school.

For families arriving from the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the shift is real and it lands in Year 9 rather than Year 11. The Middle Years Programme assesses against criteria and rewards process; the IGCSE series rewards a specific written performance inside a fixed time against a published mark scheme. Students who were comfortable under criteria sometimes read their first terminal paper as unfair. It is not unfair, it is a different game, and the earlier a home tuition plan names that difference the less damage it does in May.

  • Get the entry record from the examinations officer, not from memory.
  • Confirm the tier or route for every subject with a choice.
  • Check whether two boards appear across your child's subject list.
  • Treat Higher Level choices as mock-driven, since results arrive later.
  • Ask the receiving school which subjects it requires for the next stage.

What the May series asks of a Year 11 candidate, subject by subject

The sciences carry an assessed practical element in most routes, and it is the part families forget until the week it is scheduled. Depending on the entry, that is either laboratory work or a written paper about experimental method, and either way it rewards something tuition can actually build: reading an unfamiliar method, spotting the controlled variable, drawing a results table before the data arrives. The precise structure, the components in play and how they fit together change with the syllabus version, so confirm the current shape with the Cambridge or Pearson subject guide for your child's year and with the subject teacher, not with a tutor's memory of an older cohort.

Mathematics splits by tier, and the two routes ask for different things. One rewards fluency and clean arithmetic under pressure; the other asks for unfamiliar problems that need a plan before a pen moves. There is also a calculator and non-calculator distinction in some routes, which matters more than it sounds because students who have only ever practised with a calculator lose marks on arithmetic they genuinely know. English divides again between a first-language route and a second-language route, with a coursework option in some entries and a fully examined option in others. Languages, drama and music usually have a performance or speaking component that the school schedules well before the written papers, which quietly moves a student's deadline forward by weeks.

The humanities and the commerce subjects are where home classes earn their keep fastest, because the content is usually known and the marks are lost in technique. A Business Studies candidate who writes everything she knows about a case study will score below a candidate who answers the command word asked. Geography source questions, History extract questions and Economics data response questions all reward the same discipline: read the stimulus, answer the question, stop. Art and Design runs on a long coursework portfolio with an internal submission date set by the school, which is the single most common reason a Year 11 student in Mumbai has no time for revision in February.

  • Confirm every component with the current subject guide for your year.
  • Ask when the school has scheduled speaking and practical components.
  • Treat the coursework submission date as the real February deadline.
  • Practise maths without a calculator if the route has such a paper.
  • Command words earn marks; everything a student knows does not.

Where in Mumbai May series tutors are placed, zone by zone

Mumbai, Maharashtra is six matching regions rather than one city, and the May run-up changes the calculation in each because study leave converts evening slots into daytime ones. In South Mumbai the distances are short and the clocks are slow: Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Peddar Road, Walkeshwar, Tardeo and Fort are all within a few kilometres of each other, but the Peddar Road and Haji Ali signals can eat forty minutes of an evening, so we match within the island using the Western Line between Churchgate and Mumbai Central, the Harbour Line towards Dockyard, Metro Line 3 from Cuffe Parade to BKC and the Coastal Road, instead of pulling a tutor down from the suburbs for a 7pm session in April.

The Western Suburbs run north to south, and so does the matching. Bandra West, Khar West, Santacruz West and Juhu form one band; Andheri West, Versova and Oshiwara another; Goregaon East, Malad West, Kandivali East, Borivali and Dahisar another. Along the Western Line, the Western Express Highway, Link Road and Metro Lines 2A and 7 a tutor moves easily; across them, at 6pm, nobody does. The Central Suburbs sit on the Central Line between Kurla and Mulund with Powai and Chandivali hanging off JVLR, and Powai is the awkward one because it has no station of its own, so tutors arrive by road from Andheri East, Kanjurmarg or Ghatkopar East, with Metro Line 1 and the Santacruz–Chembur Link Road doing the rest.

The Eastern Suburbs stretch from Chembur and Govandi up through Vikhroli and Bhandup to Mulund West, served by the Central and Harbour lines and the Eastern Express Highway, with the Eastern Freeway putting South Mumbai within reach of Chembur and Wadala far faster than the map suggests. Navi Mumbai is matched node to node across Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar and Panvel on Palm Beach Road and the Sion–Panvel Highway; the Atal Setu has shortened the crossing, but a weekday evening booking that depends on it rarely survives a full term. In Thane, Pokhran Road, Majiwada and Ghodbunder Road up to Kasarvadavali set the schedule, and a Thane tutor covers Thane.

  • South Mumbai is matched inside the island, not from the suburbs.
  • Western Suburbs matching runs along the line, never across it.
  • Powai and Chandivali are reached by road through JVLR.
  • Navi Mumbai works node to node on Palm Beach Road.
  • Ghodbunder Road timings decide what a Thane evening slot can be.

How does the Mumbai school calendar line up with the May June series?

The Mumbai international school year opens in June and closes in April, which means a May series candidate gets one full academic year and no more. Schools split it around the Diwali break, so there is a long monsoon term and a shorter, much denser second term. At Cathedral and John Connon School in Fort, at B.D. Somani International School in Cuffe Parade, at Ecole Mondiale World School in Juhu and at Aditya Birla World Academy in Tardeo the shape is broadly the same even where the dates differ: unit tests through the monsoon, coursework and mock windows across December and January, teaching wound up through February, and Year 11 released for study leave somewhere in the spring.

That calendar produces predictable pressure points, and they are not the ones parents brace for. The hardest fortnight of the year is usually not in May. It is the stretch in January when a mock timetable, an Art portfolio submission and a science practical assessment collide, because every one of those dates is set internally by the school rather than by the board. The second hardest is the first fortnight after study leave begins, when a student who has always worked to a school bell suddenly has eleven unstructured hours a day and no idea how to spend them. A home tuition schedule that shifts to mornings on the day study leave starts solves more of that than any amount of advice.

IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with any school named on this page; we name schools because their calendars shape the timing of the work, and for no other reason. The dates themselves are not ours to publish. The examination timetable, the entry deadlines, the late-entry window and the school's own internal submission dates come from your school's examinations officer, and they are the only authority worth planning against. Ask for the timetable the week it is released and put it on a wall where your child can see it.

  • The academic year runs June to April, so there is one year only.
  • January collides mocks, coursework and practicals in most schools.
  • Internal submission dates are set by the school, not by the board.
  • Shift sessions to mornings the week study leave begins.
  • The examinations officer is the only source for timetable and entries.

Home tuition, online or both in the run-up to May?

Home tutoring is the default for this request, and the reason is mechanical rather than sentimental. The May papers are written by hand, under time, on paper, and a student who has practised every question on a screen has not practised the thing being assessed. A home tutor sitting across the table watches the handwriting slow down at minute forty, sees the question that got skipped and came back to, and can time a full paper properly. For IGCSE May and June exam preparation in Mumbai that physical rehearsal is most of the value, and it is why an IGCSE home tuition in Mumbai arrangement usually beats the alternatives through the final term.

Online earns its place in two specific slots. The first is marking turnaround: a paper written on Saturday, photographed, marked overnight and discussed on a half-hour call on Sunday is faster than waiting for the next home visit, and the discussion is sharper because the script is fresh. The second is scarcity. An IGCSE online tutor in Mumbai may be the only realistic route to a specialist in a less commonly taught language or a minority option subject, and a tutor who knows that syllabus from two hundred kilometres away is worth more than a generalist who can reach your lobby in fifteen minutes. Screen fatigue is real, so keep online sessions shorter than home ones.

Hybrid is what most families settle into without planning it. Two home sessions a week for teaching and timed practice, one short online review for marked work, and a switch to full online for any week when the monsoon, an illness or a traffic collapse makes the journey unreliable. The honest trade-off is attention: a tired student at 8.30pm after a home session has little left for a screen, and a student who is alone in a room with a laptop will sometimes be alone in a room with a laptop and something else. Decide the mix deliberately with the tutor in the first week rather than drifting into it in March.

  • Handwritten timed practice is the strongest argument for home sessions.
  • Use online for overnight marking and next-day script discussion.
  • Scarce subjects are better taught online than taught badly nearby.
  • Keep online sessions shorter; attention falls faster on a screen.
  • Agree the home and online mix in week one, not in March.

What checks sit behind an IGCSE home tutor in Mumbai?

Every tutor listed on IB Gram has been through identity and qualification checks, and a teaching history that is specific enough to argue with. We record which board, which subjects, which components and which series a tutor has actually taught, because those four facts predict usefulness in the last term better than a degree certificate does. We take references, and for anyone who will sit in a family's living room we ask for the kind of detail a building's security desk will also ask for. A profile that cannot say which series a tutor last prepared a candidate for is a profile we do not publish.

There are checks only you can run, and they take one session. Hand the tutor a past paper question in your child's subject and ask them to mark it aloud against the published mark scheme. A specialist will tell you where the marks sit and where this answer threw one away; a generalist will say it looks good. Ask which series they prepared candidates for most recently and what went wrong in it. Ask what they would drop if there were only six weeks left. The answers to those three questions separate a subject teacher from a pleasant graduate with free evenings.

Be wary of a tutor who offers a guaranteed grade, and of anyone who quotes a number before seeing a script. IB Gram does not guarantee grades and no honest tutor will either; what a good one will do is tell you which marks are reachable from here and which are not. Parents ask who the best IGCSE tutor in Mumbai is for the May papers, and the question has no answer in the abstract: the right tutor for a candidate two topics short in Chemistry is the wrong one for a candidate losing marks on essay structure. A search for IGCSE tutors near me in Mumbai throws up plenty of confident promises, and the confident ones are usually the least informed. Check the paperwork, watch one session, and ask your child afterwards whether they understood the correction or only accepted it.

  • Board, subject, component and series are recorded on every profile.
  • Ask the tutor to mark a past paper question aloud.
  • Ask which series they last prepared a candidate for.
  • Ask what they would cut with six weeks remaining.
  • A tutor who promises a specific grade has not seen the script.

Working backwards from the May timetable, month by month

Sequencing is most of what IGCSE May and June exam preparation in Mumbai actually buys, so start at the papers and walk back. If the written series opens in the first half of May, revision has to be running by the start of April, which means syllabus coverage has to be finished in February, which means the mock results from December and January have to be acted on inside a fortnight rather than discussed at a parent meeting in March. Everything else follows from those three hinges. June and July, at the top of the Mumbai school year, are for a baseline: one past paper per subject sat properly, under time, so there is something real to measure against. August and September belong to content, and to the coursework pieces that are easiest to start and hardest to restart. October is the Diwali window and the first genuine catch-up block of the year; a student who is two topics behind in November is in a different situation from one who is two topics behind in February.

November and December carry drafts, internal deadlines and the first mock papers. Mocks are a diagnostic and a calendar marker here, nothing more: their job in this plan is to tell you which subjects need the second term and which can be left to the student. January is the collision month in most Mumbai schools, and the right response is triage rather than effort. Pick the two subjects where marked practice will move the most, and accept that the others get maintenance. February is when coverage closes. A tutor still teaching new content in March is a tutor who has run out of plan, and a student who has not finished the syllabus by the end of February will do better with ruthless prioritising than with a sprint through the last three chapters.

March is for full past papers under timetable conditions, marked by someone who knows the scheme, with the same mistakes hunted down twice. April is study leave, the longest uninterrupted study block your child will ever get and the easiest to waste; sessions move to mornings, the afternoon is for independent work, and the evening is for sleep rather than for another hour. Through May itself the work changes shape again, into the specific paper sitting in two days' time. If you are starting late, say in February with four subjects adrift, the realistic offer from a tutor is two subjects raised by technique and timing, not four subjects covered. Pick the two, say so out loud, and let the student stop carrying the other two as guilt.

  • Revision starts in April, so coverage must close in February.
  • June and July are for one properly timed paper per subject.
  • October's Diwali break is the last cheap catch-up window.
  • March is full papers under timetable conditions, marked properly.
  • Starting in February means choosing two subjects, not four.

What progress should look like at four weeks, one term and one series

At four weeks you are not looking for a better grade, you are looking for a change in method. A Year 11 student who has had four useful sessions can tell you what the command word in a question is asking for, will have started annotating a paper before answering it, and will be able to say where the marks sit in a six-mark question instead of writing until the space runs out. If none of that has changed after a month of home classes, the problem is the match or the diagnosis, and the right move is a conversation now rather than hope in March.

At one term the measurable thing is past-paper performance under time, compared against the baseline paper from the start. Expect the careless losses to fall first: the unit left off an answer, the graph axis unlabelled, the second part of a two-part question never attempted. Content gaps close more slowly and unevenly, and in a subject where a student missed a whole term to illness or to a school change, a single term of two sessions a week will not make that up. A tutor who says so in October is more useful than one who agrees with everything and tells you in March.

Across a full series the honest statement is narrow. IB Gram does not guarantee grades, cannot predict a paper, and will not publish a success rate, because a rate built on other families tells you nothing about your child's script. What a good arrangement does deliver is a student who knows the format, has sat every paper type under time, has had their own errors shown back to them, and walks into the hall without being surprised by anything except the content. The rest belongs to the examiner. Keep the plan, keep the sleep, and judge the tutor on the work you can see rather than on the result you cannot.

  • Four weeks: method changes, command words, annotation before answering.
  • One term: timed paper scores compared against the baseline paper.
  • Careless marks return first; content gaps close slowly.
  • A term of sessions cannot replace a missed school term.
  • Judge the tutor on visible work, not on a predicted outcome.

Getting started with May series home tuition in Mumbai

Bring four things to the first conversation and the match gets made in a day rather than a week. The subject list with the board and tier against each subject, taken from the entry record rather than from memory. The most recent report card and, if they exist, the actual mock scripts with the examiner's or teacher's marks on them, because a marked script tells a tutor more in five minutes than a transcript does in an hour. The school's study-leave date. And your honest ranking of which two subjects worry you most, which is almost never the same as the ranking of the lowest marks.

The first session is diagnostic and should feel like one. A good tutor will spend most of it watching your child work rather than talking: a timed question or two, a walk through a marked answer, a few questions about how revision currently happens. It ends with a written list of what needs covering, what needs practising and what gets dropped, with a sequence attached to the calendar months that are actually left. If the first session ends with nothing on paper, ask for it before booking a term.

After that the rhythm is simple and worth protecting. A standing weekly slot the family treats as fixed, one piece of written work done between sessions and marked before the next one, and a short review every few weeks against the month-by-month plan rather than against a feeling. Tell us early if a slot stops working, because a time that is wrong in November becomes a cancelled session in February. One arrangement covering all IB and IGCSE subjects through home classes Mumbai tutors can deliver sounds efficient and usually is not. A home tutor for all IB and IGCSE subjects Mumbai families need rarely exists in one person, and a two-tutor arrangement built deliberately works better than one tutor stretched across five subjects.

  • Have the entry record, with board and tier for each subject.
  • Bring marked mock scripts, not only the report card.
  • Expect a written gap list at the end of session one.
  • Protect one standing weekly slot the whole family plans around.
  • Two specialists usually beat one tutor stretched across five subjects.
FAQs

Mumbai tutoring — questions parents ask

How late is too late to start IGCSE May June exam preparation in Mumbai?+

February is late but workable; April is a rescue operation with narrow aims. Starting in February, a tutor can realistically lift two subjects through technique, timing and marked practice while the rest get maintenance. Starting once study leave has begun, the work becomes paper-specific: format, command words, mark allocation and the two or three topics most likely to appear in a question your child can actually answer. What no start date buys is full syllabus coverage in a month. The useful question to ask a prospective tutor is not whether they can finish the course, but which marks they think are reachable from where your child is now. Families who begin IGCSE May and June exam preparation in Mumbai around the Diwali break rarely have to ask it at all.

Can a tutor travel to our building in Bandra West for an evening slot in the final term?+

Yes, and the slot time matters more than the distance. A tutor matched within the Bandra, Khar and Santacruz band reaches a Bandra West building reliably at 6.30pm or 7.30pm; the same tutor coming from Mulund or Kharghar will manage it in November and start arriving late by February. Give us the building name and the gate protocol when you enquire, because societies that require a pre-registered visitor entry for a standing weekly slot are far easier to set up once than renegotiated every week. Also tell us whether the lift and the study space are shared, since that decides the realistic session length.

Should a parent be at home during a home tuition session?+

Someone should be in the flat, but not in the room. An adult at home is a sensible condition for any tutor working with a minor, and most families here treat it as standard. Sitting in on the session is different and usually counterproductive: a Year 11 student who is being watched by a parent will stop admitting what they do not understand, which is the single most useful thing that happens in a diagnostic hour. Leave the door open, stay within earshot, and ask your questions afterwards. If you want to see the method, ask the tutor for ten minutes at the end of the session instead.

How many subjects can we realistically take on before the May series?+

Two with real depth, three at a stretch, and five only if you are paying for supervision rather than teaching. Each subject needs a timed paper, marking turnaround and a session to discuss the script, and that cycle takes time the student also needs for school work and sleep. Families who spread tuition across every subject in January usually end up with five arrangements that each move nothing. Rank the subjects by how far marked practice can move them rather than by how low the last report was, then commit to the top two. The remaining subjects are often better served by the school's own revision sessions.

Do you cover both Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel subjects at IGCSE level?+

Yes, and we filter by board before anything else, because the papers differ even where the subject names match. A tutor who has prepared candidates for a Cambridge International Education syllabus is not automatically useful for the Pearson Edexcel version of the same subject, and the mark schemes reward slightly different things. Tell us which board appears against each subject on the entry record and we match accordingly. Where a student is sitting both boards across different subjects, which happens in several Mumbai schools, we will usually suggest two tutors rather than one generalist covering both.

What do IGCSE tuition fees in Mumbai depend on?+

Fees move with five things, and none of them is a fixed city rate. The board and level, since a terminal-year specialist costs more than a Year 9 generalist. Subject scarcity, which is why a common science is easier to staff than a minority language. Travel distance and the time of day, because a tutor crossing a zone at 6pm is selling two hours of travel alongside the lesson. Session length and frequency. And whether the work includes marking written papers between sessions, which is real hours. We will not publish a price list here; ask for the specific quote against your own subject list and slot. Put the same question to any IGCSE private tutor Mumbai parents recommend to you, because those five factors apply to them too.

What happens to the schedule once school releases Year 11 for study leave?+

The schedule should change shape on the first day, not drift. Study leave converts evening slots into morning ones, and morning is when a timed paper is worth sitting, so we move sessions to the daytime wherever the tutor's other commitments allow. The afternoon belongs to independent work on whatever the morning exposed, and the evening is for stopping. Families who keep the old 7.30pm slot through study leave tend to get a tired student doing their worst work at the hardest hour. Flag the study-leave date when you first enquire so the tutor's daytime availability is checked before you book.

Does online tuition work for a family in Thane in the last six weeks before the May papers?+

It works for marking and review, less well for timed rehearsal. A Thane family on Ghodbunder Road or near Pokhran Road often has a genuine choice between a local tutor who arrives in twenty minutes and a specialist elsewhere in Mumbai who is only reachable on a screen. For the last six weeks, the compromise most families land on is handwritten papers sat at home under time, photographed and sent, then discussed on a short call the next day. That keeps the physical rehearsal where it belongs and uses the screen for the part it is actually good at, which is fast feedback on a fresh script.

What if the tutor is not working out after a month?+

Tell us in week two rather than week six, and we re-match without an argument. A mismatch in the final year is expensive in a way it is not in Year 9, because the weeks do not come back. The signals worth acting on are specific: no written work is coming back marked, your child cannot say what the last session was about, or the sessions have quietly become homework supervision. We will ask what the first tutor did and did not do, use that to narrow the replacement, and pass the diagnostic notes across so the new tutor does not spend a session rediscovering the same gaps.

Where do the December and January mocks fit into a May series plan?+

They are the hinge the second term turns on, and their job here is to allocate effort. A mock paper tells you which subjects will respond to marked practice and which are short of content, and it does that in a way no report card can. Act on the results within a fortnight: pick the subjects, change the plan, book the slots. The grade on a mock is a snapshot taken before revision began, so treat it as information rather than as a forecast. How to prepare for the mocks themselves is a separate question with a separate answer; here, what matters is the fortnight after them.

Who confirms the exam timetable and the entry deadlines?+

Your school's examinations officer, and only them. Schools submit entries on the board's schedule, hold the candidate statement of entry, and publish the local sitting times for each paper, including any clash arrangements where two of your child's papers fall together. IB Gram does not hold that information for your school and will not quote dates at you; a tutor who recites a timetable from memory is reciting last year's. Ask the examinations officer for the statement of entry as soon as it is issued, check every subject and tier on it against what you believe your child is studying, and raise any discrepancy immediately.
