Most families who contact us about an IGCSE maths tutor in Mumbai arrive with a mark, not a diagnosis. The report says sixty-one percent and the teacher's comment says needs to show working. Our first job is turning that into something a tutor can act on: which tier the school has entered the child for, which syllabus route the school runs, whether the marks are being lost on topics the student has never understood or on questions they understood and rushed. Those two causes look identical on a report card and need completely different tuition.
So the form asks for the syllabus route if you know it, the grade or percentage from the last school assessment, the topics the teacher has flagged, and the evenings that are realistically free. Six to eight in the evening on a weekday is the slot every family in the city wants, which is why naming a second option changes your shortlist more than anything else you tell us. Maths tutors are the least scarce specialists in Mumbai and the strong ones are booked earliest, so a family that can take a Wednesday as well as a Thursday gets a better list in September than a family that can only take one night.
What you get back is a shortlist with teaching history, the tiers and routes each tutor has taught, and the areas they cover. No phone numbers go out until you pick someone. The trial session then runs on paper rather than conversation: the tutor sets a past-paper question in a topic the teacher flagged, watches the student attempt it without help, and marks it out loud so you can hear which marks were lost on method and which on arithmetic. Parents who sit in on that ten minutes usually know by the end whether to continue.
Your child sits one of two tiers in Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics, and the tier caps the range of grades available to them. Core covers a smaller syllabus and awards a restricted band of grades. Extended covers the full syllabus and the full grade range. The current syllabus document states exactly which grades each tier can award, and because boards revise those documents on their own schedule, the version for the year your child sits is the only one worth planning from. Your school's examinations officer holds it and will tell you which tier the entry has been made for.
Underneath the tier sits a second question most parents never hear about: which maths route the school runs at all. A Mathematics (0580) tutor in Mumbai teaches something different from a tutor working on Cambridge IGCSE International Mathematics (0607), which expects a graphics calculator throughout and carries an investigation component. Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics (0606) runs alongside the main course for students heading towards demanding quantitative subjects. Pearson Edexcel runs its own International GCSE in Mathematics with Foundation and Higher tiers and separate specifications, plus Further Pure Mathematics. The header of your child's last mock paper carries the code that settles all of this in three seconds.
This page covers the breadth: the routes, the tiers, how to tell which one applies and how tuition differs across them. Mathematics (0580) at IGCSE Years 9-11 needs a tutor Mumbai parents can keep to one evening a week, and the code-level depth for that syllabus, paper by paper, lives on our Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 pages. If your child is in Year 7 or 8 and the question is Checkpoint rather than IGCSE, the Cambridge Lower Secondary Checkpoint maths page is the right one. Sending you to the page that answers your actual question beats restating half of it here.
Two things decide an Extended maths grade more than topic knowledge does, and both are trainable. The first is arithmetic without a calculator. An IGCSE maths home tutor in Mumbai will usually find that a capable student has outsourced fractions, surds, percentage reversals and index laws to a device sometime around Grade 8, and that the device is not available in the non-calculator paper. The Extended pair of papers, numbered Paper 2 and Paper 4 in the current Cambridge scheme, split along exactly this line, and your examinations officer can confirm the numbering and format for the session your child sits.
The second is method. Multi-step questions award marks for the route as well as the answer, so a student who writes nothing but a final figure throws away marks they had earned in their head. The fix is mechanical and slightly tedious: every line written down, every substitution shown, units carried through, the answer underlined. Tutors who mark in front of the student rather than taking the book away teach this fastest, because the student sees the mark being withheld and argues about it, which is the moment the habit changes.
The topics that catch students out are predictable. Bearings and trigonometry in three dimensions, vector geometry, transformations described in full, cumulative frequency and box plots read correctly, functions and their inverses, and algebraic fractions where a sign error early kills the whole question. A worked example that tells you more than any list: give a Grade 10 student a bearings question with a diagram they have to draw themselves, and the ones who can do trigonometry will still lose the question because the diagram was wrong. That is a reading and drawing failure, not a maths failure, and it is fixed in a fortnight.
IGCSE maths home tuition in Mumbai is easier to arrange than most subjects and harder to schedule than families expect, because the depth of the tutor pool is not the binding constraint: the six-to-eight evening window is. In South Mumbai, families in Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Walkeshwar, Peddar Road and Worli are matched inside the island, with the Western Line, the Harbour Line, Metro Line 3 and the Coastal Road doing the work. A tutor who lives in Prabhadevi can hold a Worli slot for two years. The same tutor asked to reach Cuffe Parade twice a week will renegotiate by December.
The Western Suburbs carry the largest share of IGCSE families in Mumbai, Maharashtra, from Bandra and Khar West through Santacruz, Juhu, Andheri, Goregaon, Malad and Kandivali to Borivali and Dahisar East. Matching runs along the Western Line and along Metro Lines 2A and 7 rather than across the Western Express Highway at peak. In the Central Suburbs, Kurla, Ghatkopar, Vikhroli, Powai and Chandivali sit either side of JVLR, and Powai has no station of its own, so tutors come by road from Andheri East, Kanjurmarg or Ghatkopar and the SCLR links the Chembur side.
Across the Eastern Suburbs, from Chembur and Wadala through Bhandup to Mulund West, the Eastern Freeway and the Eastern Express Highway decide what is possible, and a Chembur-based tutor can take a Saturday slot in Lower Parel without losing the morning. In Navi Mumbai the nodes behave like separate towns: Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar and Panvel, joined by Palm Beach Road, the Sion–Panvel Highway and now the Atal Setu. Thane runs from the station out along Pokhran Road and Ghodbunder Road to Majiwada and Kasarvadavali, where the evening crawl is the whole story. Searches for "IGCSE tutors near me Mumbai" are the correct instinct, and Mathematics (0580) home classes Mumbai families book usually sit inside a fifteen-minute radius.
The squeeze is November to February, and it comes from three things landing together: school mocks, board entry decisions and the May or June examination series. Families at Thakur International School in Kandivali East, Bombay Cambridge International School in Andheri East, Billabong High International School across Santacruz, Juhu, Malad and Thane, Witty International School in Malad and Chembur, JBCN International School at Parel and Borivali, NES International School in Mulund West, Smt Sulochanadevi Singhania School in Thane and D.Y. Patil International School in Nerul all work to that shape, though each school sets its own internal dates. IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with any school named on this page.
Mock results in November and December are where tier conversations get real. A student placed in Core in Grade 9 on the strength of one bad Grade 8 test sometimes produces a mock that clearly belongs in Extended, and the window for changing an entry is set by the board and the school rather than by the family. Ask the examinations officer two questions in writing: what is the deadline for an entry change, and what evidence does the school want before making one. A tutor can help build that evidence in six weeks of marked past-paper work if the question is asked in November rather than in February.
Term planning follows from that. June to September is when a tutor can rebuild non-calculator arithmetic and algebra from the ground, which is slow work nobody wants to do in January. October and November are past-paper technique and mock preparation. December and January are error analysis on the mock scripts themselves, question by question. February and March are timed full papers under exam conditions. April is revision of the student's own mistake log and nothing new. Families who start in Grade 9 instead of Grade 10 get the whole sequence rather than the last third of it.
Home tuition is the first choice for maths and the reason is physical: the tutor needs to see the working as it is produced, upside down, across a table, and reach over to point at the line where the sign changed. A tutor at home also sees the rest of the picture, including a student working on a bed with a phone face-up beside them. Families book an IGCSE maths home tutor in Mumbai for the same reason schools use whiteboards rather than screen shares for problem classes: pencil on paper, watched live, is still the fastest feedback loop anyone has found.
Online maths tuition has become genuinely good, with one requirement: a writing surface the tutor can see. A graphics tablet, a document camera or a phone on a stand pointed at the page all work. What fails is a student typing answers or holding a page up at the end. An IGCSE online tutor in Mumbai can be the better option when the subject route is unusual, since a 0607 specialist with a graphics calculator background may be two suburbs away or in another city altogether, and route knowledge beats proximity for that syllabus.
Hybrid suits Grade 10 and 11 best in the months when past papers dominate. One home tuition slot a week for new teaching and live marking, plus one short online session to go through a timed paper the student attempted alone, covers more ground than two home visits in the same week and costs less in travel. A home tutor for Mathematics (0580) Mumbai parents book in Grade 9 often shifts to exactly this pattern by Grade 11. During the monsoon, when Ghodbunder Road and the Andheri subway stop traffic for an evening, hybrid is also what keeps the week from being written off.
Ask three questions and listen to the structure of the answers. Which tier and which syllabus route have you taught most recently, and how many cohorts through. How do you handle a student who understands the lesson and loses marks in the exam. And what will you ask my child to do between sessions. A tutor who answers the second question with more practice is guessing; a tutor who answers it with a mistake log, timed single questions and a rule about writing every line has taught the problem before.
Our own checks sit behind that conversation. Identity and qualification documents are verified, teaching history is confirmed against the tiers and routes claimed, and references are called where a school or examination board is named. We do not grade tutors on charm, and we do not guarantee grades, because nobody honest in this business does. IB Gram is an independent platform with no affiliation to Cambridge, Pearson or any school listed here, which also means we have no interest in steering you towards one syllabus route over another.
There are two signals worth taking seriously yourself. A tutor who will mark a past-paper question in front of you is confident about method; a tutor who wants to take the book home and send comments later may be fine, but you learn less. And be wary of anybody offering a guaranteed grade, a fixed improvement or a jump of two bands by March, because examination boards do not work that way. Parents who search for the "best IGCSE tutor in Mumbai" get advertisements; parents who ask about tiers taught and marking habits get a tutor who fits. An IGCSE private tutor Mumbai families have kept for two years is the signal that matters.
The tier decides what tuition is for. On Core, the honest aim is security: the full topic list covered properly, arithmetic without a calculator reliable, and every available mark on standard questions taken. Stretching a Core student with Extended material is a waste of the term unless the school has agreed to reconsider the entry. On Extended, the aim is the top end of the paper, which means multi-step problems, unfamiliar contexts and the discipline to leave a question and come back. Those are two different jobs, and a tutor who runs the same plan for both has not asked which tier you are on.
The decision also reaches forward. Students heading for Diploma Programme Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level need algebraic fluency that Core does not build, and schools look at the IGCSE tier when advising on DP routes. Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation is a different destination with different demands. A Grade 9 family in Kandivali East asking whether the tier matters is really asking about Grade 11 subject choice two years out, and the answer is that it matters more there than it does on the certificate itself. The school's DP coordinator is the person to ask about route prerequisites.
Tier also moves the money, without anyone quoting a price. What IGCSE tuition fees in Mumbai depend on is the usual set: the board and route, the tier and level, how scarce that specialism is, how far the tutor travels and how long each session runs. Extended work with a Grade 11 student and marking between sessions prices differently from Core consolidation with a Grade 9 student in the same building. Ask any tutor for the per-session rate and what marking is included in it, and ask whether the rate changes in the exam term, because many quietly do.
Four weeks fixes habits, not topics. In a month you should see working written out properly, a mistake log that exists, and a student who attempts the second half of a long question instead of stopping. You should not expect the school mark to move yet, because the next assessment may be on a topic the tuition has not reached, and a single test is noise. The evidence at four weeks is in the exercise book: fewer blank spaces, more crossed-out first attempts, which looks worse and is better.
A term is long enough to judge properly. By then a student should be scoring consistently on past-paper questions in the topics covered, and the non-calculator work should no longer be the reason marks are lost. If the tutor has covered six topics and the student cannot reproduce question one from any of them unaided, the sessions are being spent on explanation rather than practice, and that is a conversation to have directly. Ask for the last three marked papers. Marked work that has stopped coming back is the clearest early sign a match is drifting.
Over one exam cycle the realistic target is a student who walks into the paper with timing rehearsed, a method habit that collects the marks they have earned, and a known list of their own recurring errors. IB Gram does not guarantee grades and publishes no success figures. If a match is not working, and the usual signs are sessions becoming chat, homework stopping and the student going quiet, tell us inside the first fortnight. We shortlist a replacement, pass on the topic coverage and the mistake log, and the new tutor starts from the student's real position rather than from the beginning.
Bring four things to the first session and it pays for itself. The last two marked assessments, the topic list the teacher flagged, the mock paper or textbook so the tutor can see the route and tier, and the calculator the school expects the student to use in the examination. That last item surprises people. A student arriving at a session with a scientific calculator when the school runs a graphics-calculator syllabus has been practising on the wrong machine, and the tutor will spot it in the first ten minutes.
The session itself should end with three things said out loud: what the tutor thinks is causing the lost marks, what the first month covers, and what the student does between sessions. Write those down. A plan that is only in the tutor's head cannot be reviewed in November. An IGCSE home tutor in Mumbai worth keeping will also tell you what they are not going to do, such as teaching Additional Mathematics content to a student who needs the main syllabus secured first.
Then protect the slot. The families who get a full term of value are the ones who treat the weekly session like a school period rather than an appointment, and who tell the tutor about the school trip in October before it happens rather than on the day. If your child's week genuinely has no stable evening, say so at the start: a Saturday morning slot that holds beats a Tuesday that is cancelled twice a month, and the shortlist for weekend mornings is wider anyway, which works in your favour.
Rates are quoted per session and vary with five things, so ask about those rather than for a figure. The board and syllabus route matter, since a 0607 specialist with graphics-calculator experience is scarcer than a general maths tutor. The tier and year group matter, as Grade 11 Extended work carries marking between sessions. Travel distance matters, because a tutor crossing two suburbs is pricing an hour of road into every visit. Session length and frequency matter. IGCSE home tuition in Mumbai is usually agreed monthly, and the useful question is what marking and past-paper feedback the rate includes.
Sometimes, and the deadline belongs to the board and the school rather than to you. Schools usually place students on a tier in Grade 9 using Grade 8 performance, and a strong set of mocks can reopen the decision if it is raised early. Ask the examinations officer for the entry-change deadline and the evidence the school wants, in writing, in November. Six weeks of marked Extended past-paper work is the kind of evidence that gets looked at seriously. Leaving the request to February usually means the entry has closed, whatever the student can now demonstrate.
Yes, provided the tutor is based inside Navi Mumbai. Kharghar sits a short drive from Belapur, Nerul and Panvel along the Sion–Panvel Highway and Palm Beach Road, so a tutor from those nodes can hold a 7pm weekday slot for a full term without resenting it. Pulling someone across the creek from Chembur or Sion for the same slot works for a month and then quietly stops working. The Atal Setu has changed weekend logistics more than weekday ones, because the time saving is on the bridge rather than in the evening approach roads.
It depends entirely on the syllabus route the school runs, which is why the paper header matters. Cambridge IGCSE International Mathematics (0607) assumes a graphics calculator throughout. Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580) splits into a non-calculator paper and a calculator paper, with a scientific calculator for the second. Edexcel's International GCSE in Mathematics has its own requirements. Ask the maths department which model they teach from and buy that one, because a student who learns menus on a different machine loses time in the examination hall for no academic reason at all.
One well-used session a week carries most students through Grade 10, with a second added in the term before the papers if past-paper timing is the weakness. Two sessions a week from September is usually a sign that something else is wrong, such as a topic backlog from Grade 9 that nobody has named. The variable that matters more than frequency is what happens between sessions. A student doing two timed questions and reviewing a mistake log every other day gains more from one weekly session than a student doing nothing between two.
For most students, home tuition is better for teaching and online is equal for review, which is why hybrid plans are common by Grade 11. In person, the tutor watches the working appear and interrupts at the line where it went wrong. Online can do the same with a graphics tablet or a document camera, and loses almost nothing for marking a paper the student has already attempted. Where online clearly wins is access to a route specialist who is not in your zone, and for families in Panvel, Kasarvadavali or Dahisar East that trade is often worth making.
Usually because understanding a worked example and producing a solution under time pressure are different skills, and school teaching rewards the first. The common causes are specific: no written method, so earned marks are not awarded; arithmetic done mentally and wrongly without a calculator; misreading multi-part questions and answering part (b) with part (a) data; and no timing practice, so the last long question is never reached. Each one is fixable in weeks with timed single questions and marking done in front of the student. Ask the tutor to diagnose which of the four it is before planning anything.
Tell us in the first fortnight and we shortlist someone else. Nobody benefits from a polite arrangement that limps to March, and the early signs are easy to read: the student stops asking questions, homework stops being done, the marked work stops coming back. When a replacement happens we pass on the topics covered so far and the student's error log, so the new tutor starts from her actual position. There is no awkward conversation to have with the outgoing tutor on your side either, because we handle that part of it.
Often yes, and the first question is whether the student should be taking it at all. Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics (0606) sits on top of the main syllabus and suits students with genuine algebraic fluency who are heading towards quantitative subjects at Diploma Programme level. A student still losing marks on the main syllabus should secure that first. Where a student is comfortable in both, one strong tutor can sometimes cover the pair in a longer weekly session, but ask specifically whether they have taught 0606 as a course rather than as enrichment topics.
A table, two chairs facing the same page, decent light and a plug point is the whole requirement. The dining table beats a bedroom desk because the tutor can sit beside rather than opposite the student and read the working the right way up. Keep the television off in the next room if the walls are thin, because maths sessions involve long silences while a student thinks and noise fills them. Phones go face-down on the table, not in a pocket. Families in compact two-bedroom flats in Mulund West and Chembur run home tuition like this routinely.
Not too late, but it changes what tuition can realistically do. Starting in June of the examination year leaves time for topic repair, past-paper technique and timing, which is most of what moves marks. Starting in January means triage: the tutor picks the topics with the best return, drills method marks and timing, and leaves the rest. We will say so plainly rather than take the booking quietly. What nobody can do in a January start is rebuild two years of missing algebra, and any tutor promising otherwise is not being straight with you.
Send the syllabus route if you know it, the last marked assessment, the topics the teacher flagged and two possible evenings. You get a shortlist of verified maths tutors with the tiers and routes they have taught, before anyone calls. Pick one, sit in on the trial while a past-paper question is marked out loud, and decide then. If the match is wrong in the first fortnight, ask for a replacement.
