IB Gram Mumbai: IB & IGCSE Home Tutors

IB Gram in Mumbai is an independent tutor-matching platform that places verified IB and IGCSE home tutors with families across the city. We do one job: we find the tutor, check their credentials and replace them if the fit is wrong. The teaching happens in your living room, or online when that works better. We do not guarantee grades.

Every tutor's degree, board experience and photo ID is checked before matching
Replacement at no extra charge if the first tutor is not right
Home tuition across six Mumbai zones, plus online for scarce subjects

What IB Gram in Mumbai does when your enquiry arrives

IB Gram in Mumbai is a matching platform, not a coaching centre and not a school. There is no building you visit, no batch your child joins and no syllabus of our own. What we hold is a roster of IB and IGCSE tutors across the city, a record of what each one has actually taught, and a process for putting the right one in front of the right student. The teaching itself is the tutor's work, and the learning is your child's. The match, the verification and the replacement are ours. Those three are the only things we will claim, and they are the only three you should hold us to.

An enquiry reaches us as a form, a call or a message on a phone. The useful version of it contains six things: the board, the year group, the subjects, the level, your locality and the two or three slots you can realistically keep every week for a term. With those six, a shortlist takes a day or two. Without them we come back and ask, which is why the first conversation with us is mostly questions rather than a pitch. A request that reads "IGCSE Maths help for my son in Khar West, Year 10, Extended tier, Tuesday and Friday after 6.30pm" is a request we can act on by the next evening. A request that reads "need a good tutor urgently" takes three days longer, because we still have to find out all six things before we can filter anybody. Most families arrive here after typing IB tutors near me Mumbai into a phone at ten at night, and that search tells Google a rough location while telling us nothing we can actually filter a roster on.

From the moment those six facts exist, the sequence is fixed and it does not change for anybody. We run it the same way for a PYP parent in Cuffe Parade and for a DP2 parent in Kandivali East:

Nothing in that sequence is clever. It is an ordinary filter applied in the right order. Board experience comes first, because a tutor who has taught CBSE Physics ably for a decade is not automatically ready for Diploma Programme Physics Higher Level, where the paper 2 data-analysis questions and the ten-hour Internal Assessment are a different job. Travel time comes second, because a tutor who needs ninety minutes each way will start cancelling around week six, whatever they promised in week one. The paid trial session comes last, because a parent's judgement after watching one session in their own house is better evidence than any profile we could write.

  • 1. We confirm board, level, subjects and the two weekly slots you can hold.
  • 2. We filter by board experience first, then by honest travel time to your address.
  • 3. You get two or three profiles with qualifications, boards taught and travel expectation.
  • 4. You choose one and we schedule a paid first session at home or online.
  • 5. After that session you tell us: continue, change the tutor, or stop.

Which programmes and boards do we cover across Mumbai?

We cover the International Baccalaureate (IB) from the Primary Years Programme (PYP) through the Middle Years Programme (MYP) to the Diploma Programme (DP), plus the Cambridge International Education and Pearson Edexcel IGCSE pathways, Years 1 to 12. We do not run CBSE, ICSE or state-board tuition as a service line. Saying that plainly costs us enquiries every week and we still say it, because a tutor stretched across four boards is good at none of them. Covering all IB and IGCSE subjects means a tutor in Mumbai for each one, screened separately, rather than one generalist offered for everything.

In the PYP years the work is rarely remedial. A PYP parent in Worli or Santacruz West usually wants a tutor who can keep English and Maths fluency moving while the school runs transdisciplinary units, and who can read a report written in PYP language and translate it into what to practise on a Saturday morning. In the MYP the shape changes: four assessment criteria per subject, each marked out of eight, a Personal Project in MYP 5, and the on-screen eAssessments that some Mumbai schools enter students for. Most MYP requests that reach us are really about criterion C and criterion D, where students who can do the Maths still lose marks because they will not communicate their reasoning or reflect on it.

The DP is where the pressure concentrates. Six subjects, three at Higher Level (HL) and three at Standard Level (SL), plus the Core: Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the Extended Essay (EE) and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). Each subject carries its own Internal Assessment (IA), graded against published criteria by the school and moderated outside it. Grades run 1 to 7 per subject, 42 from six subjects and up to 3 bonus points from TOK and the EE. A DP1 student who misreads how much the IA is worth in November has a harder DP2 than one who started the data collection in the monsoon term.

On the IGCSE side the first real decision is tiering. Cambridge Maths and the sciences split into Core and Extended, Edexcel into Foundation and Higher, and that choice caps the grade before a single paper is sat. Grades arrive as 9 to 1 or A* to G depending on the series and the school's entry. Exams run in the May and June series and again in October and November, which matters for a Year 11 student in Mumbai who needs one subject re-sat without losing the whole year. What we will not do is tell your school which tier to enter your child for. We will give you the evidence to have that conversation with the school yourself.

  • IB PYP, MYP and DP, including MYP criteria A to D and eAssessment
  • Cambridge IGCSE Core and Extended, and Pearson Edexcel Foundation and Higher
  • DP Core support: TOK essay structure, Extended Essay scoping and supervision meetings
  • IGCSE October and November series re-sits, not only the May and June entry
  • We do not teach CBSE, ICSE or state board, and we will say so

Subject by subject: what a tutor has to prove before we list them

Subject choice across both boards is where most families actually need help, and it is the part no generalist tutor can do. A DP student picking between Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches and Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation, at HL or SL, is choosing a different exam, a different toolkit and a different set of university doors. The same student choosing between Physics HL and Chemistry HL is choosing which Internal Assessment they will be writing in DP2 and how many hours it will eat. We ask a tutor to explain those trade-offs in a screening call before we list them, and if they cannot, they stay off the roster for that subject whatever their degree says.

The internal assessments are the clearest test of whether a tutor knows the syllabus or only the subject. DP Physics and Chemistry carry a single scientific investigation with published criteria covering research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, and the commonest failure we see is a beautiful experiment with no justified uncertainty treatment. DP Economics carries a portfolio of three commentaries, each on a different unit and each tied to a news article published within a set window, which means a student who leaves them all to February has lost the choice of article. DP English Language and Literature carries an Individual Oral built on a global issue and two extracts, one literary and one non-literary. Business Management carries a research project; Visual Arts carries a comparative study and an exhibition; History carries an HL essay as well as the internal investigation.

At IGCSE the equivalent detail is in the papers. Cambridge Maths Extended candidates sit papers that carry structured multi-mark questions where method marks are available and routinely thrown away by students who show nothing. Cambridge and Edexcel sciences differ in how practical skills are examined, so an IGCSE Physics tutor who has only ever prepared Edexcel candidates will misjudge an alternative-to-practical paper. English First Language is assessed on directed writing and reading response rather than on literary knowledge, and a student who reads widely can still score poorly for ignoring the question's register and audience.

Two things we will not do, and both are asked of us often. We will not have a tutor write, draft or heavily edit an Internal Assessment, an Extended Essay or a coursework piece, because that is academic misconduct and it is your child who is reported for it, not us. And we will not promise a tutor for every subject in every locality on demand. There are subjects, Visual Arts, Music, Film, Psychology at HL, where we may need a week, or where the honest answer is online rather than a home tutor who is physically nearby. We will look for a home tutor for all IB and IGCSE subjects Mumbai schools actually offer, and we will tell you when the search for a particular one is going to take longer than two days.

  • Screening call tests syllabus knowledge, not just the degree on the certificate
  • IA and coursework coaching is structure and feedback, never writing it for them
  • Maths AA versus AI and Core versus Extended discussed before the first session
  • Paper-level familiarity checked separately for Cambridge and for Pearson Edexcel
  • Scarce subjects may mean a week's wait, or online instead of travel

Where in Mumbai we can place a home tutor, and where it gets hard

IB Gram in Mumbai matches across all six zones of the metropolitan region, and the honest version of that sentence includes the places where it is difficult. In South Mumbai we place home tutors in Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Fort, Walkeshwar, Babulnath, Tardeo, Peddar Road and Worli. Distances here are short and the clock still beats you: a tutor crossing from Worli to Colaba covers about eight kilometres and can lose forty minutes to the Peddar Road and Haji Ali signals at 7pm. So we match within the island rather than bringing somebody down from the suburbs, using the Western Line between Churchgate, Grant Road and Mumbai Central, the Harbour Line at CSMT and Dockyard, Metro Line 3 from Cuffe Parade towards BKC, and the Coastal Road.

The Western Suburbs are our largest catchment: Bandra, Khar, Santacruz, Juhu, Andheri, Goregaon, Malad, Kandivali, Borivali and Dahisar. The zone runs north to south along the Western Express Highway, Link Road and the Western Line, with Metro Line 1 crossing from Versova through Andheri to Ghatkopar and Metro Lines 2A and 7 running Dahisar to Gundavali. Matching along the line works; matching across it does not. Khar to Santacruz is a twelve-minute hop. Malad to Kandivali is fine. Bandra to Andheri is quick at 3pm and painful at 6pm, and anything that needs the Bandra-Worli Sea Link twice a week in peak traffic is a slot that will quietly collapse. In the Central Suburbs we cover Powai, Chandivali, Kurla, Ghatkopar and Mulund. Powai is the awkward one: physically central, no station of its own, so tutors arrive by road from Andheri East, Kanjurmarg or Ghatkopar via JVLR, and the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road carries the cross-town traffic.

The Eastern Suburbs run from Chembur and Govandi up through Vikhroli and Bhandup to Mulund, on the Central and Harbour lines, the Eastern Express Highway and the Monorail between Chembur and Wadala. The Eastern Freeway makes South Mumbai genuinely reachable from Chembur and Wadala, faster than the map suggests, which is why a few of our South Mumbai placements are actually tutors who live east. Navi Mumbai is planned in nodes, Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar and Panvel, each a short drive from the next on Palm Beach Road and the Sion-Panvel Highway, with the Harbour Line, the Trans-Harbour Line and Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 from Belapur to Pendhar. The Atal Setu has changed the Mumbai, Maharashtra commute map, but we still match node to node: pulling a tutor across the creek for a 7pm weekday lesson rarely holds for a full term, whatever anybody promises in June.

Thane spreads west to east from the station across Pokhran Road, Majiwada and Ghodbunder Road towards Kasarvadavali, and Ghodbunder sets the schedule for everything. A tutor living near Thane station reaches Kasarvadavali in twenty minutes off-peak and close to an hour in the evening, so Thane tutors cover Thane and a Mulund tutor crosses over only when the subject is scarce. Here is the limit stated plainly: if you are in an outer pocket and need a rare HL subject at 6pm on a weekday, we may not have a home tutor who can hold that slot for a term. We will tell you that in the first conversation and offer online or a weekend slot instead, rather than send somebody who will cancel in August.

  • South Mumbai: Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Worli, Peddar Road, Walkeshwar, Fort, Tardeo
  • Western Suburbs: Bandra, Khar, Juhu, Andheri, Goregaon, Malad, Kandivali, Borivali
  • Central and Eastern Suburbs: Powai, Chandivali, Ghatkopar, Chembur, Vikhroli, Bhandup, Mulund
  • Navi Mumbai nodes: Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar, Panvel, matched node to node
  • Thane: Pokhran Road, Majiwada, Ghodbunder Road and Kasarvadavali, scheduled around peak hour

How the Mumbai school calendar decides what a tutor can fix

Mumbai international schools run a June to April year, and that calendar decides what a tutor can realistically change and when. June and July are the cheapest months to start and the hardest to persuade a parent to start in, because nothing has gone wrong yet. August and September are when MYP criteria marks and IGCSE class tests begin to land. October brings mocks in many schools. November and December take DP1 students into their first formal examinations and DP2 students into Extended Essay and Internal Assessment deadlines stacked against each other. January and February are the hard months: DP2 mocks, predicted grades being finalised, IA final submissions, and the TOK essay going to the school. March and April are the May session papers for DP and the IGCSE series. A family who calls in late January is asking a tutor to compress eight months of work into six weeks, and the honest answer is that revision technique and paper strategy can still move marks, while a two-year content gap cannot be closed in that window.

Families who come to us attend schools across the whole region and each one sets its own internal rhythm. Dhirubhai Ambani International School and Ascend International School in BKC, the American School of Bombay, Ecole Mondiale World School, Jamnabai Narsee International School and Utpal Shanghvi Global School in Juhu, Oberoi International School on JVLR in Goregaon East, Cathedral and John Connon School in Fort, B.D. Somani International School in Cuffe Parade, Bombay International School at Babulnath, Aditya Birla World Academy in Tardeo, Activity High School on Peddar Road, Hiranandani Foundation School in Powai, JBCN International School at Parel, Borivali, Oshiwara and Chembur, NES International School in Mulund West, Thakur International School in Kandivali East, Singapore International School in Dahisar East, Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania School in Thane and D.Y. Patil International School in Nerul, Navi Mumbai. Knowing a school's internal deadline pattern is useful context for planning sessions, and that is the entire extent of the relationship.

IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with any school named on this page, nor with the International Baccalaureate Organisation, Cambridge International Education or Pearson Edexcel. We have no arrangement with any school, we receive nothing from any school, and no tutor on our roster speaks for a school. If a profile ever implies otherwise, that is an error and we want to hear about it.

This boundary has practical consequences worth knowing before you enquire. We cannot get a subject change approved, move an internal deadline, influence a predicted grade, obtain a copy of your child's internal mark scheme, or attend a parent-teacher meeting on your behalf. What a tutor can do is prepare you for those conversations: a written note on where the marks are being lost, which criterion or paper section it maps to, and what has been practised since. Parents who walk into a January meeting with that note have a different conversation from parents who walk in with a worry.

  • June to April year: August tests, October mocks, January IA and mock crunch
  • DP May session and the IGCSE series fall in March and April
  • School names here are local context only, with no affiliation implied
  • A tutor cannot move a school deadline or change a predicted grade
  • We supply a written note on lost marks for your school meeting

Home tuition, online or hybrid: which should you ask for?

Ask for home tuition first. For almost every family who contacts IB Gram in Mumbai, an IB home tutor in Mumbai who sits at the dining table beats the same person on a screen, because the tutor sees the notebook, catches the wrong method as it is being written, and cannot be ignored while a second browser tab is open. A home tutor also sees the working conditions: the study corner next to the television, the younger sibling's practice hour, the fact that Thursday is always a write-off. Those observations change the plan more often than any diagnostic test does.

IB home tuition in Mumbai has two real costs and we would rather you hear them from us. The first is the schedule. A home tutor has to get to you, so your 6pm slot in Lower Parel and their 8pm slot in Andheri West cannot both exist, and travel is priced into the rate whether or not anybody itemises it. The second is scarcity. Insisting on a home tutor narrows the roster to people who can reach your address repeatedly, and for a scarce HL subject in an outer node that can mean a shortlist of one, or none.

Online is not the consolation prize. An IB online tutor in Mumbai gives you the whole city's roster instead of one corridor's, no travel loss on either side, a recording to revisit and a shared document the student can reopen the night before the test. For a DP2 student working through past paper questions, screen-sharing a marked script is often clearer than two people leaning over one page. Online is weakest with younger students who need a physical presence to stay on task, with subjects that need the tutor to watch a hand write out a long derivation, and in buildings where the evening connection drops. If your child is in MYP 1 to MYP 3, we will push you towards home classes.

Hybrid is what most of our longer placements settle into after a month, and nobody asks for it on day one. One home session a week for the work that needs a person in the room: marking by hand, setting the week, going through a returned paper line by line. One online session for drill, doubt-clearing before a test, or the twenty-minute check the night before an IA deadline. It survives the Mumbai monsoon, it survives exam week when the student cannot afford the travel either, and it costs less in total travel than two home visits. All IB and IGCSE subjects run as home classes Mumbai wide by default, and we move the second weekly slot online when the calendar gets tight.

  • Home tuition first: the tutor sees the notebook, the method and the room
  • Travel is real and it is priced in, however the rate is presented
  • Online opens the whole city roster for scarce HL and SL subjects
  • Younger MYP students usually need a tutor physically in the room
  • Hybrid: one home session for marking, one online for drill and doubts

What we verify about a tutor, and what you should check yourself

Before a profile reaches you, IB Gram in Mumbai has checked four things and we will tell you exactly which four. One: identity, against a government photo identity document, with the name on it matching the name on the profile. Two: qualifications, against the actual degree or postgraduate certificate, not against a typed claim. Three: board teaching history, meaning which boards and which levels they have taught, for how long, and in what setting, with references we contact rather than collect. Four: subject-level competence, screened in a call by somebody who has taught that syllabus, including a short piece of student work for them to mark and justify. A tutor who marks that sample generously and cannot explain the criterion behind the mark does not get listed for that subject.

Here is what verification cannot do, which matters more than the list above. A document check tells you who somebody is, not whether they can teach your specific child. We have listed tutors with excellent credentials who were wrong for a particular student: too fast, too gentle, too committed to one method, or simply a personality mismatch with a fifteen-year-old. No amount of paperwork predicts that. It is the reason the first session is a paid trial you can walk away from, and the reason we replace without argument. We would rather hold a reputation for fast replacement than pretend our screening is better than it is. An IB private tutor Mumbai parents hire straight from a neighbour's recommendation has had none of these four checks run on them, which is usually fine and is occasionally not, and either way nobody is going to replace them for you in five days.

So check these things yourself, in the first two weeks, because you can and we cannot. Be at home for the first session, not in the next room with the door shut. Hold sessions in a common room rather than a bedroom, and keep the door open. Ask the tutor at the gate for the same photo identity they gave us, and look at it. After session two, ask for the plan in writing: what is weak, what order it will be fixed in, what you should expect to see by week four. Ask to see marked work, not a verbal report that everything is going well.

Two more things we do, which nobody asks about but which affect you. We log every placement, so when a tutor is replaced for the same reason by two different families, they stop being offered for that profile. And we do not pass your phone number around a group of tutors to see who bites. Your details go to the tutors on your shortlist and nowhere else, which is why you get three profiles and not thirty calls.

  • Identity against government photo ID, with the profile name matching exactly
  • Degrees seen as documents, references contacted rather than simply collected
  • Subject screening by someone who has taught that syllabus, including sample marking
  • You check: ID at the gate, common room, written plan after session two
  • Your contact details go only to the tutors on your shortlist

One Mumbai family's enquiry, from first message to the fourth session

A parent in Chembur messages on a Sunday night. Her daughter is in DP1 at a school in Powai, taking Physics HL, Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches SL and Economics SL, and the first school report has come back with a comment about Physics that the family has read four times without understanding. The message we receive says: Physics tutor needed, DP1, urgently. That is not yet something we can act on, so Monday morning is questions. Which paper did the marks come off. Is the Internal Assessment topic chosen. Which days are already taken by school commitments. Chembur or somewhere else for the sessions. By Monday afternoon we know it is really two problems: paper 2 structured questions, and a student who has not started thinking about the ten-hour investigation that will be due in DP2.

Monday evening we filter. Board experience first, so only tutors with Diploma Programme Physics HL experience, not school Physics in general. Then geography: tutors who can reach Chembur on a weekday evening, which in practice means people living in the Eastern Suburbs along the Central and Harbour lines, or in the Central Suburbs reachable by the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road, rather than anybody west of the Western Express Highway. Then the slots: Tuesday and Saturday. Three profiles go out on Tuesday morning with qualifications, boards taught, and an honest travel note on each. The parent picks the second one, a tutor in Vikhroli, partly because the travel note said thirty minutes rather than an optimistic fifteen.

The first session is the following Saturday morning, at home, paid, ninety minutes. It is not teaching. The tutor works through the returned paper 2 with the student and writes down what he finds: she can do the physics and loses marks on command terms, writing an explanation where the question said calculate and vice versa, and she does not state assumptions in the two-mark openers. He also asks her what she might investigate for the IA, gets a shrug, and writes that down too. By Saturday afternoon the parent has a short written plan: four weeks on command terms and paper technique, IA topic narrowed to three options by week three, no new content until the technique is fixed.

Sessions two, three and four are Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings, and this is where the honest part sits. By session four the tutor can show the parent which of the paper 2 question types are now being answered in the right form and which are not, with the marked scripts to prove it, and the IA has become a single testable question about the damping of an oscillating system. What has not happened by session four is a change in her school grade, because her next assessment is three weeks away. That is the correct state of affairs at four sessions, and any platform telling you otherwise is selling you something. What we did was the match, the verification and the written plan. What we did not do is the physics, and we did not promise the 7.

  • Sunday enquiry, Monday questions, Tuesday shortlist, Saturday first session at home
  • Filter order: Diploma Programme Physics HL experience, then Chembur travel, then slots
  • First session diagnoses command terms and paper technique, not new content
  • Written plan to the parent the same day, with a four-week expectation
  • By session four: marked evidence of technique, no school grade change yet

What happens when a tutor is not working out?

You tell us, and we replace the tutor without asking you to justify it. There is no notice period, no argument about whether the student tried hard enough and no charge for the change itself. One message naming what is wrong is enough: too fast, too slow, sessions drifting, homework not set, the student has stopped talking in the room. We would rather make the swap in week three than hear in February that it has been wrong since August, which happens more often than it should because parents feel awkward saying so.

It helps to know what progress is supposed to look like, because most replacement requests arrive at four weeks and about half of them are not actually a tutor problem. At four weeks you should see diagnosis and habit, not grades: the tutor can name the specific weakness, there is work being set and marked between sessions, and your child can tell you what the current focus is. At one term you should see it in the school's own marks: a criterion score moving, a paper section that used to be blank being attempted, an Internal Assessment with a real question rather than a vague area. At one exam cycle you should see the overall picture change, if attendance held and the work between sessions got done. If at four weeks the tutor cannot name a weakness, that is a tutor problem and we will change them. If the tutor can name it and nothing is being done between sessions, changing the tutor will not fix it.

We do not guarantee grades, and we would not know how to. The tutor controls the teaching. Your child controls the effort, the attendance and whether the practice happens on a Wednesday night. The school controls the internal marks, the predicted grades and the entry tier. The examiner controls the rest. We control the match, the checks and the replacement, and a platform that promised the other four would be lying to you. If somebody in Mumbai offers your family a guaranteed 40 points or a guaranteed 9 in IGCSE Maths, ask them what happens when it does not arrive.

A replacement in practice takes two to five days, longer for a scarce HL subject. We ask the outgoing tutor for their notes so the new one does not restart from zero, we tell the new tutor what went wrong, and the first session with the replacement is again a session you can walk away from. Where it is the schedule rather than the person that has broken, which is common after the monsoon or once DP2 mocks start, we will often suggest moving one weekly slot online before changing a tutor who is otherwise working.

  • One message is enough: no notice period, no charge for the swap
  • Four weeks: diagnosis and marked homework, not a grade change
  • One term: a criterion score moving, or a paper section being attempted
  • Replacement in two to five days, longer for scarce Higher Level subjects
  • Outgoing tutor's notes are passed on so nothing restarts from zero

How do you start with IB Gram in Mumbai?

Send six facts and you will have a shortlist in a day or two. Board, year group, subjects, level, your locality, and the two slots you can keep every week. If you have the last school report or a returned paper, attach a photograph of it, because the comment the school wrote and the marks you lost tell us more about which tutor to send than any description of your child's ability can. If you do not have any of that, send what you have and we will ask the rest on a call.

Prepare three practical things before the first session, none of which is about academics. Decide where the tutor will sit, and make it a table in a common room with a plug and a light rather than a bedroom desk. Sort out the gate: most Mumbai societies need a resident to log a visitor, and a tutor who is argued with at the gate for fifteen minutes every Tuesday is a tutor who starts resenting the slot. Find out whether your building allows a standing weekly entry for a named visitor, because several do and it removes the problem permanently. Then be at home for session one.

The first session is paid, is usually seventy-five to ninety minutes, and is deliberately not a lesson. The tutor goes through recent work and returned papers, finds out what the student actually cannot do rather than what the report says, checks where the syllabus has got to against where the school is, and asks about the internal assessments that are coming. You should receive, within a day, a short written note: the weakness named, the order it will be tackled in, what is being set between sessions, and what to expect by week four. If that note does not arrive, ask for it, and tell us if it still does not.

After that, the arrangement is between you and the tutor for the teaching, and between you and us for everything else. Message us if the slot stops working, if the tutor cancels twice, if the subject needs to change when your child drops Chemistry HL in November, or if you simply want a second opinion on what the school is telling you. We will not call you every month to ask how it is going, and we will answer the same day when you call us.

  • Send board, year, subjects, level, locality and your two weekly slots
  • Attach a photo of the last report or a returned marked paper
  • Set up a common-room table and sort the society gate pass beforehand
  • First session is paid, diagnostic, and followed by a written note
  • One message changes a slot, a subject or the tutor, any time
FAQs

Mumbai tutoring — questions parents ask

Is IB Gram a tuition centre, a school or an agency?+

IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform, which means there is no centre to visit and no class to join. We maintain a roster of IB and IGCSE tutors across Mumbai, check their identity, qualifications and board experience, match one to your request, and replace them if the fit is wrong. The teaching happens in your home or online, between your family and that tutor. We are not a school, we do not issue certificates, we do not set syllabus, and we do not employ your child's teachers. If you want a batch, a classroom and a fixed timetable, a coaching institute is a better fit than we are.

What do IB tuition fees in Mumbai depend on?+

IB tuition fees in Mumbai depend on five things and we will not quote you a price list we would then have to defend. Board and level come first: Diploma Programme Higher Level costs more per hour than MYP, and IGCSE sits between them. Subject scarcity is second, because there are far fewer DP Physics HL and Visual Arts tutors than DP Economics SL tutors. Travel distance is third, and it is real money for a tutor crossing Mumbai twice a week. Session length and weekly frequency are fourth and fifth. Tell us your locality, board, level and subject and you will get a specific range for your case, not a brochure number.

Does IB Gram guarantee grades or exam results?+

No. We do not guarantee grades, and anyone who offers you a guaranteed score is describing something they cannot control. A tutor controls the quality of the teaching. Your child controls attendance, effort and whether the practice between sessions happens. The school controls internal marks, predicted grades and the tier your child is entered for. The examiner controls the rest. What IB Gram in Mumbai is accountable for is narrower and checkable: a match that fits the board and the schedule, verification of the tutor we send, a written plan after the first session, and a replacement when it is not working. Hold us to those four.

Is IB Gram affiliated with the IB Organisation, Cambridge, or my child's school?+

No. IB Gram is not affiliated with the International Baccalaureate Organisation, with Cambridge International Education, with Pearson Edexcel, or with any school named anywhere on this site. We name Mumbai schools only as local context, because knowing a school's assessment calendar helps us plan sessions around it. We receive nothing from any school and no school endorses us. No tutor on our roster represents a school, and none can influence an internal mark, a predicted grade or an entry decision. If a tutor profile or a conversation ever suggests a school relationship exists, that is wrong and we want you to report it to us.

How do you check a tutor before sending me the profile?+

Four checks, always in the same order. Identity against a government photo identity document, with the name matching the profile. Qualifications against the actual degree or certificate rather than a typed claim. Board and level teaching history, with references we contact ourselves. Then a subject screening call run by someone who has taught that syllabus, including a piece of student work for the tutor to mark and justify against the published criteria. What those checks cannot tell you is whether this particular person suits your particular child, which is why the first session is a paid trial you can end, and why replacement is free.

Will a tutor actually travel to our building off Ghodbunder Road in Thane on a weekday evening?+

Often yes, but only if we match within Thane rather than across the city. Ghodbunder Road sets the schedule here: a tutor near Thane station reaches Kasarvadavali in about twenty minutes off-peak and close to an hour in the evening peak, so we look first at tutors living along Pokhran Road, Majiwada and the Ghodbunder stretch itself, and only then at a Mulund tutor crossing the Eastern Express Highway. If your subject is scarce and your only slot is 6.30pm on a weekday, we will say so and suggest a weekend home slot or an online session rather than send a tutor who will cancel by August.

What does our society gate need so the tutor gets in every week?+

Ask your society office for a standing weekly visitor entry for a named tutor, because most Mumbai complexes allow it and it removes the recurring problem. Without it the tutor is logged as a fresh visitor every session, which in a large complex means ten to fifteen minutes lost at the gate and an increasingly irritated tutor. Give the office the tutor's name and the regular day and time. Keep a photograph of the tutor's identity document on your phone for the first few visits. If your building requires a resident to approve each entry through an app, tell us, so the tutor knows to message you on arrival rather than wait.

Does online tutoring really work as well as home tuition for DP Physics?+

For a DP1 or DP2 student working through past papers, online is close to equivalent and sometimes better. Screen-sharing a marked script, annotating a graph live and leaving a recording the student can rewatch before a test are genuine advantages, and you get the whole Mumbai roster instead of the tutors who can reach your address. Where online is weaker is long derivations where the tutor needs to watch a hand write, practical and data-analysis work on a shared sheet of paper, and any student who drifts the moment nobody is in the room. For MYP-age students we recommend home classes. For DP, hybrid usually wins.

We are in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai and need a DP Economics tutor. Can you place one?+

Usually yes, and we will match within Navi Mumbai rather than pull somebody across the creek. Navi Mumbai works in nodes, and Kharghar connects easily to Belapur, Nerul, Vashi and Panvel along the Sion-Panvel Highway, Palm Beach Road and the Harbour Line, so your shortlist will mostly be tutors from those nodes. Even with the Atal Setu open, a tutor commuting from the island city for a weekday evening lesson rarely sustains it for a full term, so we do not offer it as the first option. If the specific HL or SL combination is scarce locally, we will say so and offer online.

There has been no visible progress after a month. What should we do?+

Message us, and expect us to ask one question first: can the tutor name the specific weakness and show you marked work. At four weeks grades are not the measure. What should exist is a named weakness, work being set and marked between sessions, and a child who can tell you what the current focus is. If the tutor cannot produce that, it is a tutor problem and we will replace them in two to five days with the outgoing notes passed on. If the tutor can produce it but nothing is being done between sessions, a new tutor will not fix it, and we will tell you that instead of selling you a change.

What happens if a session is missed, by us or by the tutor?+

Tell the tutor directly and tell us if it becomes a pattern. One missed session on either side is normal in Mumbai: a monsoon evening, a school event, a train disruption on the Western or Central Line. The workable arrangement is twenty-four hours notice for a reschedule, and most tutors will move a weekday slot to the weekend once a month without a fuss. What is not normal is a tutor cancelling twice in a month or arriving thirty minutes late repeatedly, usually a sign the travel was never realistic. That is a scheduling failure rather than a teaching one, and the fix is often moving one slot online rather than changing the tutor.

Can IB Gram help us choose subjects, or speak to our child's school?+

We can help you think it through, and we cannot speak to your school. A tutor who teaches the syllabus can lay out what Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL demands compared with Applications and Interpretation SL, what Internal Assessment each subject carries, and what an Extended tier IGCSE entry caps the grade at. That is useful input for your decision. What we cannot do is approve a subject change, request a tier change, see an internal mark scheme, influence a predicted grade or attend a meeting for you. What a tutor will give you is a written note on where marks are being lost, which you take into that meeting yourself.

Find your Mumbai tutor

Send us the board, year group, subjects, level, your locality and the two weekly slots you can keep. We come back within a day or two with two or three verified profiles, each with qualifications, boards taught and an honest travel note. You pick one, we schedule a paid first session at your home or online, and after that session you tell us to continue, change the tutor, or stop. No contract, no lock-in, no guaranteed grades.
