How does IB Gram match an IGCSE tutor in Mumbai to the right syllabus code?

A request for IGCSE Maths help is not yet a brief. Cambridge Mathematics 0580 and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A 4MA1 are separate qualifications with separate papers, separate tier labels and separate mark schemes. A teacher who has lived inside 0580 Paper 4 for years does not automatically know how 4MA1 Paper 2 awards a method mark when the final answer is wrong. The first thing IB Gram asks a Mumbai parent for, then, is the code on the exam entry confirmation or in the school's assessment handbook, not the name of the subject. Everything after that decision gets easier, and everything before it is guesswork.

From there the sequence is fixed. 1. Confirm the board, the syllabus code, the tier and the intended series: Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel, 0620 or 4CH1, Core or Extended, February to March or May to June. 2. Read the evidence rather than the grade, which means the last marked mock script, because a script shows whether marks went missing on content, on arithmetic, or on a command word the student answered in the wrong register. 3. Shortlist tutors who have taught that code and can mark a response against its published scheme while the student watches. 4. Settle the slot and the route, which in Mumbai decides whether a weekly session is still alive in October. 5. Review after four sessions against paper marks, not against how the sessions felt.

Two things make this different from a general enquiry. The parent does not have to know the code; a photograph of the front page of any school test usually carries it, and the subject teacher will confirm it in a line. And the shortlist is deliberately short. Sending five profiles for one Year 10 Chemistry request wastes a week of a parent's evenings, so an IB Gram IGCSE home tutor in Mumbai is proposed in twos and threes, each with a reason attached: this one has marked 0620 Paper 6 question by question, that one teaches 4CH1 and has run the Edexcel January entry twice. A parent should be able to read the shortlist in one sitting and say yes or no the same evening.

  • Board and syllabus code confirmed before any tutor profile is sent
  • Tier recorded as Core, Extended, Foundation or Higher at intake
  • Last marked script requested instead of a term grade summary
  • Shortlist kept short enough to read in one sitting
  • Four-session review measured against past-paper marks

Two IGCSE boards run in Mumbai, and they are not interchangeable

Cambridge International Education and Pearson Edexcel both run an IGCSE-level qualification in Mumbai, Maharashtra, and most families meet the difference only when they start buying past papers. Cambridge calls its qualification Cambridge IGCSE and numbers its syllabuses in four digits: Mathematics 0580, Physics 0625, Chemistry 0620, Biology 0610, English as a First Language 0500, Geography 0460, History 0470, Economics 0455, Computer Science 0478. Pearson calls its version the International GCSE and uses an alphanumeric code: Mathematics A 4MA1, Physics 4PH1, Chemistry 4CH1, Biology 4BI1, English Language A 4EA1, Further Pure Mathematics 4PM1. The content overlaps heavily. The assessment design does not.

The structural differences matter more than the content ones. Cambridge tiers several syllabuses as Core or Extended, and the tier the school enters decides the highest grade available. Pearson tiers Mathematics A as Foundation or Higher and leaves its sciences untiered, so every 4PH1 candidate sits the same two papers. Cambridge assesses practical work through a separate component, either the practical test or the alternative-to-practical paper. Pearson examines practical knowledge inside the written papers instead, which means a 4BI1 student still has to describe a method and spot an uncontrolled variable, just without a paper of its own. Grading scales differ too: Cambridge reports A* to G on most syllabuses and runs 9 to 1 graded variants under different codes, such as 0980 for Mathematics, while Pearson reports 9 to 1.

Series dates are the third difference, and in Mumbai they are the one that rewrites a family's calendar. Cambridge runs a February to March series available in India alongside the main May to June series and the October to November series. Pearson runs a January series and a May to June series. A student whose school enters her for Cambridge in February sits her papers while a neighbour on Edexcel is still three months from the first one. Tutors have to work backwards from the actual series; a revision plan built for June is the wrong plan for a March entry, and a tutor who has only ever taught towards June will build it anyway unless asked.

  • Cambridge uses four-digit codes; Pearson Edexcel uses codes like 4MA1
  • Cambridge tiers as Core or Extended; Edexcel Maths A as Foundation or Higher
  • Edexcel sciences are untiered, so one paper set serves every candidate
  • Cambridge assesses practical skills in a separate component
  • Cambridge adds a February to March series in India; Edexcel adds January

Which IGCSE papers does a Mumbai student actually sit?

Start with the paper list, because it is the only honest basis for a study plan. A Cambridge 0580 Core candidate sits Paper 1 and Paper 3; an Extended candidate sits Paper 2 and Paper 4, and Paper 4 carries the long structured questions that decide the top grades. Pearson 4MA1 candidates sit Paper 1 and Paper 2 whichever tier they are entered for, both calculator papers of equal weight, so there is no separate non-calculator paper to drill. Cambridge Additional Mathematics 0606 and Pearson Further Pure Mathematics 4PM1 sit alongside these for students heading towards a mathematics-heavy sixth form, and both are routinely underestimated in Year 11.

The sciences are where the two boards diverge most visibly. Cambridge Physics 0625, Chemistry 0620 and Biology 0610 share one shape: a multiple-choice paper, Paper 1 for Core and Paper 2 for Extended; a theory paper, Paper 3 for Core and Paper 4 for Extended; and then one practical component, either Paper 5, the practical test taken in a school laboratory, or Paper 6, the alternative to practical. Paper 6 is written, but it is not a theory paper. It asks a student to read a scale correctly, record to a sensible precision, plot points and draw a line of best fit, identify the independent and control variables, name a specific source of error and then say how to reduce it. Students who know the theory cold still lose marks here, because nothing in the theory papers rehearses those moves.

On the language and humanities side, Cambridge English as a First Language 0500 asks for directed writing with explicit credit for register and audience alongside its reading paper, while Pearson English Language A 4EA1 builds its demands around its own anthology. Cambridge Geography 0460 and History 0470 each offer a coursework component or an alternative-to-coursework written paper, and a school in Mumbai picks one route for the whole cohort; a student cannot opt into the other privately. That choice changes the tutoring work completely. The coursework route needs help with a question narrow enough to investigate, data collection that will survive a monsoon field trip and a conclusion that answers the hypothesis it set. The alternative-to-coursework route needs practice at reading someone else's data under timed conditions.

Across every one of these papers, marks are awarded against a published scheme, which is why command words are not vocabulary trivia. State wants a bare fact. Describe wants what happens, in order, without reasons. Explain wants the reason, and an answer that only describes scores zero on an explain question however correct it is. Suggest signals an unfamiliar context where the student has to apply known physics or chemistry rather than recall it. Calculate expects working that earns a method mark even when the final figure is wrong, which is why Cambridge Maths schemes separate method, accuracy and independent marks. Teaching a student to read the command word first, and to count the marks before writing, is often worth more than another chapter of content.

  • 0580 Core sits Papers 1 and 3; Extended sits Papers 2 and 4
  • 4MA1 candidates sit two calculator papers at either tier
  • 0625, 0620 and 0610 each need Paper 5 or Paper 6
  • Paper 6 tests precision, variables, error and improvement, not recall
  • 0460 and 0470 run coursework or an alternative written paper
  • An explain question scores nothing for a description, however accurate

Where IGCSE home tuition runs across Mumbai's six zones

IB Gram IGCSE home tuition in Mumbai is organised by zone, because travel, not willingness, is what ends a weekly slot. South Mumbai carries a long IGCSE history: families around Fort, Cuffe Parade, Babulnath, Peddar Road, Walkeshwar and Tardeo send children to schools such as the Cathedral and John Connon School, B.D. Somani International School, Bombay International School, Activity High School, Gopi Birla Memorial School and Aditya Birla World Academy. Tutors here are matched inside the island rather than pulled down the Western Line, because a Worli to Colaba hop of eight kilometres can still cost forty minutes at the Peddar Road and Haji Ali signals. The Coastal Road and the Metro Line 3 stretch towards Cuffe Parade have changed the evening picture, though not enough to make a Borivali tutor practical for a 6pm slot in Colaba.

The Western Suburbs hold the largest share of IGCSE demand in the city. Bandra West, Khar West, Santacruz West, Juhu, Vile Parle, Andheri West and Andheri East, Oshiwara, Goregaon East, Malad, Kandivali East, Borivali and Dahisar East feed schools including Dhirubhai Ambani International School in BKC, Jamnabai Narsee International School and Utpal Shanghvi Global School in Juhu, Bombay Cambridge International School in Andheri East, JBCN International School in Oshiwara and Borivali, Thakur International School in Kandivali East and Billabong High International School in Santacruz. Matching along the Western Line and Metro Lines 2A and 7 works; matching across the Western Express Highway at peak hour does not. A Khar West to Santacruz West pairing holds for a full term. A Malad tutor booked into Bandra West for Tuesday evenings does not.

The Central Suburbs run from Kurla and Ghatkopar through Vikhroli, Kanjurmarg and Bhandup to Mulund West, with Powai and Chandivali hanging off JVLR and no station of their own; Hiranandani Foundation School in Powai, Podar International School and NES International School in Mulund West draw from exactly this strip, and tutors reach Powai by road from Andheri East, Kanjurmarg or Ghatkopar rather than by train. The Eastern Suburbs, from Chembur and Govandi through Wadala up to Mulund, are served by the Central and Harbour lines, the Eastern Express Highway and the Eastern Freeway, which puts a Chembur tutor within reach of an island-city family far faster than the map suggests; JBCN International School in Chembur and Witty International School sit on this side.

Navi Mumbai works node to node. Vashi, Nerul, Seawoods, Belapur, Kharghar and Panvel are each a short run from the next along Palm Beach Road and the Sion to Panvel highway, D.Y. Patil International School in Nerul anchors several of those nodes, and the Atal Setu has shortened the creek crossing without making a weekday evening commute from Worli sustainable for a whole term. Thane spreads from the station across Pokhran Road, Majiwada, Hiranandani Estate and Ghodbunder Road out to Kasarvadavali, where Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania School and Billabong High International School in Thane set the pace; Ghodbunder Road alone decides the timetable, since the same trip takes twenty minutes off-peak and close to an hour at 7pm. Searches for IB and IGCSE tutors near me in Mumbai are answered zone first, then line, then slot, which is why a request for all IB and IGCSE subjects home tuition in Mumbai gets split into separate per-paper matches rather than one tutor covering nine syllabuses.

  • South Mumbai home tuition matched inside the island: Fort, Walkeshwar, Tardeo
  • Western Suburbs matched along the line: Khar West to Santacruz West
  • Powai and Chandivali reached by road from Andheri East or Ghatkopar
  • Eastern Freeway puts Chembur within reach of island-city families
  • Navi Mumbai matched node to node; Thane split by Ghodbunder Road

When does each IGCSE decision land in the Mumbai school year?

Mumbai IGCSE schools open in June, which puts Year 9 and Year 10 into their first assessments while the monsoon is at its heaviest and home tutors are at their least punctual. The first real decision point is the Year 9 subject and tier conversation, usually settled across the winter term, when a school asks parents to confirm Core or Extended, Foundation or Higher, separate or co-ordinated sciences, and whether a second language stays. Parents often ask for all IB and IGCSE subjects at IGCSE Years 9-11 level tutoring in Mumbai and then narrow it to two papers once the Year 9 mock scripts come back and show where the marks actually went.

The Diwali break in October or November is the last quiet stretch before the pressure. After it, December and January bring mocks or pre-boards at most schools, and coursework deadlines for 0460 and 0470 land in the same weeks; a Year 11 student at JBCN International School in Parel or Ryan Global School in Worli can have a geography coursework write-up due in the fortnight she is also sitting three mock papers. February and March then split the cohort: Cambridge candidates entered for the India series sit real papers while Pearson candidates still look at a May to June horizon, with the Edexcel January series already behind the ones who used it.

Entry decisions are administrative, and they bite. A tier is fixed when the school submits entries, not when a student feels ready, so a December conversation about moving from Core to Extended is a different conversation from the same one in February. Results from the May to June series arrive in August, which is when retake planning for October to November starts, and results from the October to November series arrive in January. Any tutoring plan that ignores those dates ends up revising content the student has already been examined on, which is the most expensive kind of wasted term.

Naming these schools is local context and nothing more. IB Gram is an independent platform, not affiliated with any school listed here, nor with Cambridge International Education or Pearson Edexcel, and it does not set, mark or moderate any paper. What a school decides about tiers, coursework routes and series is the school's decision. A tutor's job is to prepare the student for whatever the school has entered, and to say plainly when an entry looks wrong rather than to work around it quietly for a year.

  • A June start puts the first assessments inside the monsoon weeks
  • Year 9 winter term fixes tier, sciences and second-language choices
  • December and January bring mocks alongside coursework deadlines
  • February and March split the Cambridge and Pearson cohorts apart
  • August results drive October to November retake planning

Is IGCSE home tuition in Mumbai better than online for Paper 6 work?

For practical-skills papers, home tuition usually wins, because the work is physical: a ruler on a graph, a tangent drawn at the right point, a stopwatch read to a sensible precision. A tutor sitting beside a student sees the pencil go down in the wrong place on 0620 Paper 6, which a screen share hides until the marks come back. IB Gram IGCSE home tuition in Mumbai leads with that for a reason, not as a preference.

Home sessions have three other advantages that matter at IGCSE. The student works at her own desk with her own file, so the past papers, the mark schemes and the formula support stay in one place instead of living in a tutor's bag. A parent can glance at a marked script between sessions without asking for a progress report. And a standing slot in the same room every week builds the habit of sitting a full paper under time, which is the hardest thing to reproduce on a screen. The trade-offs are real: travel adds cost to IB and IGCSE tuition fees in Mumbai, an evening slot across Ghodbunder Road or the Western Express Highway is fragile in the monsoon, and a home tutor's catchment is smaller, so the pool for a scarce syllabus like 4PM1 or 0478 shrinks fast.

IB and IGCSE online tuition in Mumbai earns its place exactly where the local pool runs out. A second-language specialist, a Further Pure Mathematics teacher, a reader with marking experience for 0500 directed writing: these are not spread evenly across the city, and an online slot with the right person beats a convenient slot with the wrong one. Online also survives a 9pm start the night before a morning paper, and a shared screen with an annotated mark scheme is genuinely good for marking practice, since both people look at the same line of credit at the same moment.

Most IGCSE families end up hybrid without planning it. Theory and marking review run online on a weekday; the full timed paper runs at home on a weekend with the tutor present and silent for the first hour. Families in Kharghar, Panvel, Dahisar East and Kasarvadavali reach for this arrangement earliest, because the travel arithmetic stops working there first. The short version: home for technique and timed practice, online for scarce expertise and late slots, hybrid when the student needs both and the week has no room for two journeys.

  • Home tuition suits timed papers, practical skills and graph technique
  • Online widens the pool for scarce syllabuses and second languages
  • Hybrid keeps one timed paper at home and theory review online
  • Travel distance and session length both move the fee, stated upfront
  • Monsoon evening slots across Ghodbunder Road need a backup plan

What should you check before accepting an IGCSE home tutor in Mumbai?

IB Gram checks identity, qualifications and teaching history before a profile reaches a parent, and removes a tutor whose record does not stand up. That is the platform's half. The parent's half is subject-specific, takes about ten minutes on a call, and is worth doing even for an IB Gram IGCSE tutor in Mumbai who arrives with strong references, because IGCSE competence is code-specific in a way that general teaching ability is not.

Four questions separate a tutor who knows the qualification from one who merely knows the subject. Ask which code they have taught and across how many series; a confident answer names 0625 or 4PH1 and the paper numbers without hesitating. Ask them to mark one page of your child's last script against the published scheme, out loud, while you listen. Ask how they would handle an explain question the student answered descriptively; the useful answer is a rewriting drill, not a lecture on the topic. And ask what they do differently for Paper 6 than for Paper 4, because a tutor who treats the alternative to practical as extra theory will coach it wrong all year.

There are checks only a parent can make, and they are about the house rather than the syllabus. Decide where the session happens before the first visit, with a table, a plug point and a door that closes. Clear the visitor protocol with the society office so a standing weekly slot does not become a weekly argument at the gate. Agree in writing what happens to a missed session and who moves it. An IB and IGCSE private tutor in Mumbai working in your flat for an hour a week is a long relationship, and the awkward questions are cheaper to ask in July than in January.

Then watch the first four sessions for process rather than warmth. Does the tutor arrive with past-paper questions already chosen for the student's weakest question type? Does work come back with mark-scheme annotations rather than ticks? Is there a running list of the specific skills being fixed, such as significant figures in 0620 calculations or variable control in 0610 Paper 6? If the sessions are pleasant but the file looks the same after a month, raise it that week. Changing a tutor in week five is ordinary. Changing one in week twenty costs a term.

  • Ask for syllabus codes and paper numbers, not subject names
  • Watch the tutor mark one page against the published scheme
  • Agree the study space, the gate protocol and missed-session rules
  • Expect mark-scheme annotations on returned work, not ticks
  • Raise doubts at week four rather than at the mock results

Core or Extended: the Year 9 tier choice with a hard grade ceiling

This is the highest-stakes decision an IGCSE family makes, and it is often made in a ten-minute parent meeting. On Cambridge syllabuses that tier, Core and Extended are not easy and hard versions of one paper; they are different papers with different content and different grade ranges. Core gives access to grades C to G. Extended gives access to A* to E. The ceiling is the whole point: a student entered for 0580 Core cannot be awarded a B however well she performs, because the paper does not contain the questions that would evidence it.

Pearson handles the same idea differently. Mathematics A 4MA1 is tiered Foundation or Higher, with Foundation capped at grade 5 and Higher reaching 9 while allowing a 3 as a safety net below 4. The Edexcel sciences are untiered, so a 4CH1 candidate who is struggling has no lower paper to retreat to and a strong one has no higher paper to climb into. A family moving a child between a Cambridge school and an Edexcel school mid-stage is therefore not only changing codes; it is changing whether tiering exists at all, and that is worth understanding before the move rather than after.

How the decision should be made, honestly: look at the questions the student actually gets wrong, not the overall mark. A student losing marks on the last two parts of structured questions is an Extended candidate who needs technique. A student losing marks on the early recall parts is being asked to run before walking, and Core with a solid grade beats Extended with an E for everything except a sixth-form entry requirement that specifically demands the higher tier. Check that requirement before deciding, because it is the one constraint that can override the comfortable choice. Combined and co-ordinated sciences, such as Cambridge 0653 and 0654, raise the parallel version of this question in the laboratory subjects.

A tutor's job in this decision is evidence, not opinion. Four weeks of marked Extended questions tell a school more than a parent's confidence does, and a tutor who has taught both tiers can name the specific topics standing between the student and the higher paper. There is no single best IB and IGCSE tutor in Mumbai for this work; there is a tutor who has watched the same decision go both ways and will show you the scripts behind the advice. Tiers can sometimes be changed before entries are submitted and almost never after, so this belongs in the autumn, not in February.

  • Cambridge Core reaches grade C; Extended reaches A*
  • Edexcel Maths A Foundation caps at 5; Higher reaches 9
  • Edexcel sciences are untiered, so there is no fallback paper
  • Judge the tier on which question parts fail, not on the total
  • Confirm sixth-form entry requirements before accepting a Core entry

What progress looks like at four weeks, one term and one series

Four weeks is long enough to see technique change and too short to see a grade change. By then a student working with a competent tutor reads the command word before writing, counts the marks allocated and leaves working visible on calculation questions. On Paper 6 practice she records readings to a consistent precision and names a specific source of error instead of writing human error. None of that shows up as a higher mark yet, and a tutor who promises one at four weeks is selling something other than teaching.

One term, roughly the Diwali to February stretch in a Mumbai school, is where marks move. Full papers under time, marked against the scheme, with a log of which question types still fail: that is the evidence worth asking for. Expect the easy gains first, from arithmetic slips and misread commands, and the slow gains later, on the last parts of structured questions where the top grades live. A student can reasonably go from losing marks everywhere to losing them in one predictable place, and that narrowing is the real milestone.

Across a full series the honest statement is that preparation changes the probability and nothing more. IB Gram does not guarantee grades, and no tutor can, because a tier ceiling, an entry already submitted, an illness in exam week and the student's own work rate all sit outside a tutor's control. What a tutor can be held to is specific and checkable: papers attempted, scripts marked, weaknesses named, a plan that matches the series the school has actually entered. Ask for those four things and judge the work on them.

The limits are worth stating in advance. A Core entry cannot produce a B. A coursework route chosen by the school cannot be swapped for the alternative paper by private arrangement. Two sessions a week cannot replace the years of reading that a 0500 directed-writing response rewards. A tutor starting in January with a May to June series ahead can do useful triage, and triage is not the same thing as a full course. Families who hear that in the first conversation make better decisions than families who hear it in August.

  • Week four: command words read first, working shown, marks counted
  • One term: full papers under time with a log of failing question types
  • One series: better preparation, with no promise attached to a grade
  • A tier ceiling cannot be argued up once entries are submitted
  • Triage from January is useful but is not a full course

Starting IGCSE home classes in Mumbai: what to have ready

Four things make a first session useful instead of introductory. The syllabus code and tier for every subject in question, taken from the exam entry confirmation or the school handbook. The last marked script, photographed page by page, including the parts with low marks on them. The intended series, because a February to March entry, a May to June entry and an October to November resit need three different plans. And one honest sentence about what the student thinks is going wrong, which is often closer to the truth than the report card is.

The first session itself is diagnostic and should feel like it. A tutor should spend most of it on questions rather than on talking: a short set from the relevant paper, marked in front of the student, with the lost marks sorted into content gaps, technique gaps and command-word gaps. By the end a parent should have a one-page answer to three questions. Which paper is this work aimed at? Which question types are currently losing marks? And what will the next four sessions actually cover, in order?

Scheduling is a Mumbai problem as much as a study one. Two fixed sessions a week at the same hour survive; two flexible ones get rescheduled until they stop existing. Put the slot before the homework hour rather than after it, keep a backup online slot for the weeks when the Western Express Highway or Ghodbunder Road is impassable, and tell the society office once so the gate pass is standing rather than negotiated weekly. A home tutor for all IB and IGCSE subjects in Mumbai is rarely the right answer; two specialists for the two papers that are actually losing marks almost always is.

  • Bring the syllabus code, the tier and the intended exam series
  • Photograph the last marked script, including the weak pages
  • Expect the first session to be marked questions, not introductions
  • Fix a standing weekly slot and clear the gate pass once
  • Keep one online backup slot for monsoon evenings
FAQs

Mumbai tutoring — questions parents ask

What do IB and IGCSE tuition fees in Mumbai depend on for an IGCSE paper?+

They depend on five things, and IB Gram quotes per match rather than from a price list. The board and code matter, because a scarce syllabus such as Further Pure Mathematics 4PM1 or Computer Science 0478 has a far smaller pool than 0580. The tier matters, since Extended and Higher work needs a tutor comfortable at the top of the paper. Travel distance and time of day matter here more than almost anywhere. Session length and frequency matter. An IB Gram IGCSE tutor in Mumbai sent out to Kharghar for a 7pm weekday slot costs more than the same tutor two buildings away, and we would rather say that than publish a figure that is wrong for most families.

Can my child move from Core to Extended in Year 11?+

Sometimes, but only before the school submits entries, and that window is earlier than most parents expect. Extended is a different paper with content Core does not teach, so a switch in Year 11 means covering that content and then proving it on marked questions within weeks. Schools reasonably ask for evidence before agreeing. The practical route is four to six weeks of Extended-level structured questions, marked against the scheme, handed to the subject teacher as a file rather than argued for in a meeting. Once entries are submitted the answer is almost always no, and the student sits the paper she is entered for.

Which is harder, Cambridge 0580 or Edexcel 4MA1?+

Neither is harder in a way that helps you choose, because the school chooses, not the family. 0580 Extended splits across a short-answer paper and a long structured paper and rewards clearly set-out method; 4MA1 runs two equally weighted calculator papers with a different question style and its own formula support. Students who think in long multi-step problems often find 0580 Paper 4 suits them; students who work quickly across more questions often prefer 4MA1. What actually matters is that the tutor has taught the code your child sits, because the two mark schemes reward different writing habits.

Is Paper 6 alternative to practical easier than the practical test?+

It is not easier, it is a different examinable skill, and treating it as theory is the most common mistake we see. Cambridge 0625, 0620 and 0610 students who sit Paper 6 instead of the Paper 5 practical test still have to show experimental thinking on paper: reading an instrument to the right precision, tabulating results consistently, plotting and drawing a best-fit line, identifying variables that must be controlled, naming a specific source of error and proposing a concrete improvement. None of that is rehearsed by the theory papers. It needs its own weekly practice from past papers, with the mark scheme open on the table.

Will a tutor travel to our building in Bandra West on a weekday evening?+

Usually yes, provided the tutor is matched from within the Western Suburbs rather than across the city. A 6pm or 7pm slot in Bandra West works for a tutor based around Khar West, Santacruz West, Juhu or Vile Parle, who moves along the Western Line or the Link Road rather than across the Western Express Highway. The same slot for a tutor coming from Mulund West or Kharghar looks fine in week one and collapses by week six. Tell us the evenings and the building, give the society office a single standing gate pass, and we match for the route as carefully as for the subject.

How does IGCSE home tuition hold up during the Mumbai monsoon?+

Home tuition holds up when there is a backup plan agreed in advance, which is the honest answer rather than the reassuring one. June to September is when the school year starts and when Ghodbunder Road, the Andheri subway stretch and parts of the Eastern Express Highway can wipe out an evening without notice. The arrangement that survives is a fixed home slot plus a pre-agreed online fallback for the same hour, so a washed-out Tuesday becomes a screen session instead of a cancelled week. Families in Thane and Navi Mumbai set this up first, because they need it first.

Should we use the February to March Cambridge series or wait for May to June?+

That is the school's decision rather than a family's, and it is worth confirming early because it rewrites the whole revision calendar. Cambridge runs a February to March series in India alongside May to June and October to November; Pearson Edexcel runs January and May to June. A student entered for March has roughly a term less than a classmate on a June plan, so past-paper work has to start in the first weeks after the Diwali break rather than in the new year. Ask the school which series each subject is entered for, in writing, before building any plan around it.

Does coursework need a different tutor from the exam papers?+

Not usually a different person, but it does need a different kind of session, and you should ask about it explicitly. Where the school has chosen the coursework route on Cambridge Geography 0460 or History 0470, the work is a question narrow enough to investigate, data or sources that genuinely support a conclusion, and a write-up that answers the hypothesis it set. Where the school has chosen the alternative-to-coursework paper, the work is interpreting unfamiliar data under time. A tutor who has only taught one of the two routes will quietly teach the one they know, so name the route at the start.

Four weeks in and the marks have not moved. What should we do?+

Read the scripts before changing anything, because at four weeks technique moves before marks do. Ask for the marked work and check three things: are command words being answered in the right register, is working visible on every calculation question, and is there a written list of the question types still failing? If all three are present, the plan is working and the marks follow across the term. If the file looks like week one, tell us that week. We change the tutor without a discussion about fault, and the replacement starts from the same scripts rather than from zero.

What happens if the tutor is not working out?+

You tell us and we replace them; there is no arbitration and nobody tries to talk you out of it. The useful detail is what to send: the marked work, the sessions actually held, and one line about what is missing, whether that is preparation, mark-scheme marking, punctuality or fit with the student. We shortlist again from a different angle, and we hand the new tutor the same scripts so the diagnostic work is not repeated from scratch. Most changes happen in the first month, which is the right time for them.

Does online tuition work for Chemistry 0620 without a laboratory?+

For 0620 it works better than parents expect, because where a school enters Paper 6 rather than Paper 5, the practical component is itself a written paper. Alternative-to-practical skills are taught with past papers, a mark scheme and a shared annotated screen; no bench is needed for any of it. The part online genuinely cannot do is the Paper 5 practical test, where a student must handle apparatus, and that preparation belongs in the school laboratory with the subject teacher. For theory and for Paper 6 technique, a strong online specialist beats a nearby generalist, which is why some families run both.

Find your Mumbai tutor

Send one message with the subject, the board, the syllabus code and the tier, plus your area and the evenings that work. IB Gram replies with two or three tutors who have taught that exact code, each with a note on why they fit. You pick one, the first session is diagnostic and marked, and after four sessions we review against paper marks. If it is not working, we change the tutor.
