How IB Gram home tuition in Lokhandwala works, step by step

Five steps, and none of them involves a sales call. First, the brief: you tell us the programme, the level, the one or two subjects where marks are actually leaking, your two realistic evening windows, and ideally send a photograph of recent marked work. Second, we build a shortlist of two or three verified profiles rather than a long list, because a long list is a way of making the parent do the matching. Third, a free discovery call with the people on that shortlist, where you ask the questions. Fourth, you approve one, or none, and lessons begin only after that. Fifth, a review every two to four weeks against the student's marked work.

The brief is where the quality of everything downstream is decided, and most parents under-supply it because they assume a service wants to be sold to rather than briefed. We would rather have the awkward details. That your son will not work for anyone who sounds like a schoolteacher. That Wednesday looks free on paper and is actually swimming. That the last tutor was lovely and never set written work. That you are not sure whether the problem is the subject or the sleep. All of that changes the shortlist, and none of it appears on a form.

What we do not do is worth stating because it is the difference between this and a directory. We do not send a list of everyone available in the Western Suburbs. We do not take payment before you have spoken to a tutor. We do not sell packages of a fixed number of sessions, because a parent who has prepaid for twenty hours cannot change a bad match without an argument. And we do not name individual tutors on public pages or publish photographs and testimonials, because a profile written to attract a parent is a worse document than a profile written to describe a teacher.

IB Gram is an independent platform, not affiliated with any school named on this page, and we do not guarantee grades. The service is matching and review, not teaching: the teaching is done by the tutor you choose, in your home, on your schedule. Our job is to narrow the field honestly and to change the match without friction when it is wrong, which happens often enough that any service claiming otherwise is describing a fantasy.

  • 1. Send the brief: programme, level, subject, two evening windows, marked work
  • 2. We shortlist two or three verified profiles, not a directory of availability
  • 3. Free discovery call with the shortlist; you ask, they answer, nobody pitches
  • 4. You approve one or none; lessons start only after that approval
  • 5. Review every two to four weeks against the student's own marked work

Which programmes and boards can IB Gram actually staff in Lokhandwala?

The International Baccalaureate across all three programmes, and Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel at the International GCSE level, with the honest caveat that availability varies sharply by subject rather than by board. The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is straightforward to staff locally because the help needed is reading, number sense and working habits. The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is reasonably well covered in the main subject groups and thinner in the arts and design. The Diploma Programme (DP) is where scarcity bites: Higher Level sciences and the less common languages are genuinely hard to staff anywhere in Mumbai, and we will tell you that rather than send somebody adequate.

On the Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel side the common subjects are well covered around Lokhandwala, and the tier question matters as much as the subject. A tutor who has prepared Extended tier candidates is a different proposition from one who has taught the Core route, and we match on that explicitly. Families here frequently have children on both systems at once, an International GCSE candidate and a Diploma student under one roof, and the sensible arrangement is two specialists sharing one evening rather than one generalist stretched across both.

There is a category we decline, and it is worth being explicit. We do not match a tutor who has not taught the specific programme and level requested, even when they are available and plausible and the parent is in a hurry. This loses us bookings and it is the single policy that most affects whether a match lasts a term. A tutor working one level above their experience teaches the content correctly and misses what the harder questions reward, and the symptom appears months later as a student who understood every session and did not improve.

Where we genuinely cannot staff a subject locally, there are two honest options and we will say which we recommend. An online specialist from another part of Mumbai, which works for a motivated Diploma student reviewing marked work. Or a weekend morning home slot, which can draw a tutor from a distance that no weekday evening ever will. Pretending a scarce subject is easily available is how a parent ends up paying for the wrong person for a term.

  • PYP, MYP and DP, plus Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE
  • Availability varies by subject, not by board: HL sciences and rare languages are scarce
  • Extended tier and Core route candidates are matched to different tutors explicitly
  • We decline to match a tutor who has not taught the level requested
  • For a scarce subject: an online specialist or a weekend morning slot, stated plainly

Subject by subject: what we can match here and what is scarce

Mathematics is the easiest subject to staff in this part of the Western Suburbs, at both IB routes and both International GCSE tiers, and it is also the subject where parents most often already have a neighbour's recommendation in hand. Sciences divide: Biology and Chemistry at Standard Level are usually available locally, while Higher Level Physics and organic chemistry specialists are the scarce end and may need a wider radius. Economics and Business are reasonably covered. Language and Literature is available; Language Acquisition depends entirely on which language, with French and Spanish easier than German or a mother-tongue language.

What a tutor is matched to is a component, not a subject name. Every Diploma subject carries internal assessment, and each type is different work: a scientific investigation in the sciences, a mathematical exploration in both mathematics routes, an essay with its own criteria in the humanities and languages. We ask prospective tutors which internal assessments they have actually supervised, because a tutor who has taken students through one knows where marks are lost on it and will flag the deadline before a parent does. All IB and IGCSE subjects tutor in Lokhandwala requests get broken into components before anyone is shortlisted.

The subject and level decisions themselves are something families ask us about before they ask for a tutor, and we treat that as a legitimate request rather than a precursor to a sale. Higher Level against Standard Level in the Diploma, Core against Extended on the Cambridge route, and which of the two mathematics routes suits a particular student are all decisions better taken on evidence than on reputation. A few diagnostic sessions before a level decision is settled are worth more than a term of remedial work afterwards, and sometimes the honest outcome of that conversation is that no tuition is needed yet.

One thing we will not do is agree that a single tutor should cover four subjects. It happens in enquiries regularly and it is almost always a scheduling wish rather than a teaching plan. The pattern that works is one or two subjects staffed properly, run for a term, and then extended if it is working. Starting with four subjects and a generalist is the arrangement most likely to be renegotiated in January, which is the worst month in the Mumbai calendar to be looking for anybody. Parents who ask for one home tutor for all IB and IGCSE subjects Mumbai schools teach are describing a scheduling wish rather than a teaching plan, and all IB and IGCSE subjects home classes Lokhandwala families actually keep for a full year are built one subject at a time.

  • Mathematics is the easiest to staff locally at both routes and both tiers
  • HL Physics, organic chemistry and uncommon languages are the scarce end
  • Tutors are matched to components, including the specific internal assessment
  • We will discuss a level or tier decision without requiring you to book anything
  • One or two subjects staffed properly beats four subjects and a generalist

Does IB Gram cover my part of Mumbai around Lokhandwala?

Yes, and the practical catchment for IB Gram home tuition in Lokhandwala is the Andheri area: Lokhandwala Complex itself plus Andheri West, Oshiwara and Versova. Those four pockets sit minutes apart, which is what makes a weekly evening slot sustainable. Andheri is the nearest station. Metro Line 1 runs Versova to Andheri to Ghatkopar overhead, and Metro Lines 2A and 7 bring tutors down from Dahisar towards Gundavali, which matters for a weekend morning booking far more than for a weekday evening when the road is the only option.

We match along the Western Line rather than across it, and that is a policy rather than a preference. The Western Suburbs run north to south along the Western Express Highway and the Western Line, so a tutor travelling Bandra to Andheri is quick off-peak and painful at 6pm. Khar to Santacruz holds for a year. Malad to Kandivali holds. A tutor crossing the highway for a 6.30pm session will manage a month and then begin proposing changes, and we would rather decline that match at the start than watch it fail in week seven. If we tell you a profile is a poor geographic fit, that is why.

Scheduling here has one local characteristic worth planning around. Lokhandwala Complex is a self-contained grid of societies with short internal lanes, so a tutor already teaching one family inside the Complex can add another a few buildings away at almost no travel cost. That is why one tutor's name tends to circulate at several gates within a term, and it is a lever you can use: ask whether a shortlisted tutor already holds a standing slot inside the Complex, and offer the adjacent hour. The second booking in a tutor's evening is the cheapest access to a tutor whose first hour is already taken.

The flip side of the same geography is that gate and visitor procedures differ building by building, and we raise it in the brief rather than leaving it to the tutor's first visit. Tell us whether a recurring visitor pass can be issued, whether photo identification is required at the gate, and whether the lift queues at 7pm. Five minutes lost twice a week in a dense grid of societies is the difference between a session starting properly and one starting badly, and across a two-year Diploma that is a real quantity of teaching.

  • Catchment: Lokhandwala Complex, Andheri West, Oshiwara and Versova
  • Andheri station, Metro Line 1 and the Link Road set the radius
  • We match along the Western Line and decline cross-highway evening slots
  • Ask for the hour adjacent to a tutor's existing slot inside the Complex
  • Gate procedure and visitor passes go in the brief, not the tutor's first visit

The Mumbai school calendar we schedule around

We schedule backwards from the school's deadlines, not forwards from the day you call. Families in Lokhandwala attend JBCN International School, Oshiwara and Billabong High International School among others, with some travelling to the Juhu and Santacruz campuses that draw from this part of Mumbai. They are named here only as local context: IB Gram is independent, has no relationship with any of them, and nothing on this page should be read as implying one.

The year's shape determines what a given number of paid hours can buy. June opens it. From late July into August the first substantial assessments land. October and November bring full reports and, for final-year students, the mock papers that produce most of our enquiries. December is a short break that families overestimate as study time. January and February are the heaviest weeks in any international school in Mumbai, because internal assessment drafts, the Extended Essay and coursework arrive together with the external papers just beyond them. March onwards is study leave and the examination series.

The practical consequence for a parent is about timing rather than effort. Six to eight weeks before a pressure point, a tutor can diagnose, re-teach and practise. Inside the pressure point, the same tutor is doing triage on fewer topics with a more tired student. Both are legitimate work and they are not the same purchase. When a family calls in late January we say which one they are buying, because a parent who thinks they are buying the first and is actually buying the second will judge the tutor unfairly in March.

Two scheduling realities we ask about in the brief. School events eat weekday evenings without warning: sports day, project exhibitions, inter-school festivals, service commitments and laboratory catch-up sessions. And the final-year study-leave weeks change the shape of the week entirely, often turning an evening arrangement into a morning one. Telling a tutor about both at the start means heavy topics get sequenced around them. Telling them on the day is how a reliable slot becomes an optional one.

  • We schedule backwards from the school's deadlines, not from the day you call
  • Late July to August, October to November, January to February are the pressure points
  • Six to eight weeks ahead buys diagnosis; inside the deadline buys triage
  • We say which one you are buying rather than letting you assume
  • Study-leave weeks usually turn an evening arrangement into a morning one

Why home tuition in Lokhandwala is our default, and when it is not

Because for most students the room is where the value is. A tutor at your table sees the actual notebook rather than a photograph of the tidy version, notices that a student has stopped thinking and started copying, and can take the pen at the moment a habit forms. It also removes travel from the end of a school day, which for a middle-years child is the difference between a session that works and one that happens. An IB home tutor in Lokhandwala arriving at 5.30pm for a Year 8 student is a better arrangement than a stronger tutor at 8.30pm, and we will say so.

Online is not a lesser version of the same thing; it is a different tool with specific uses. It is the right answer when the subject is scarce and the genuine specialist lives across the city. It is better for reviewing a marked script, because annotation on screen is clearer than two people over one page. It suits study-leave mornings, when a student wants a thirty-minute paper review rather than a full session. And it keeps a monsoon week alive when the Link Road would otherwise cancel it. An IB online tutor in Lokhandwala is a real option and we offer it where it is the better answer rather than where it is the easier one.

Online is the wrong choice for a Year 9 student who cannot yet work alone, and for any student whose actual problem is that they do not start. We say this to parents who ask for online because it is cheaper and more convenient, and we have lost bookings over it. A student who needs supervision needs a person in the room, and choosing a screen for that child saves the travel and loses the term.

The arrangement most families here end on is a hybrid they never asked for: home classes on one or two fixed evenings, plus a short online session before a test or to work through a returned paper. That shape survives the monsoon, survives study leave and survives a tutor's own timetable shifting, which is why it is usually what is still running in March. We set the default mode in the brief and treat exceptions as exceptions, because renegotiating the format every fortnight is one of the quiet ways a good match stops working.

  • Home tuition is the default: the real notebook, no travel, supervision included
  • An early slot with a good tutor beats a late slot with a stronger one
  • Online is for scarce subjects, script review, study-leave mornings and monsoon weeks
  • Online is wrong for a student whose real problem is not starting
  • Most families end on fixed home evenings plus a short pre-test screen session

What we check, and what we leave to you

We verify three things before a profile reaches you: identity, the programme and level claimed, and a teaching history that can be described in specifics rather than asserted in adjectives. A tutor claiming Higher Level Chemistry should be able to name the components they have taught, describe how internal work is moderated, and discuss mark scheme language without being prompted. Where that description is vague, the profile does not go out. This is a floor, and we are clear that it is a floor rather than a guarantee of fit. Every IB tutor Mumbai families meet through us has had the programme and level checked before the profile left our hands.

What we deliberately leave to you is the judgement about temperament, because it cannot be verified from outside and it decides as many arrangements as competence does. Some students need a brisk tutor who sets written work and checks it. Some shut down with exactly that person. The discovery call exists for this reason: you are listening for whether your child will work for this adult, which is a question only you can answer. A parent who treats the call as a formality has skipped the most useful part of the process. Families searching for the best IB tutor in Lokhandwala, or typing IB tutors near me Lokhandwala into a search box, are asking the question the call is designed to answer.

There is a check we ask you to run at four weeks and it is the one that matters most. Ask the tutor for marked attempts in your child's handwriting: a first try with the error visible, the correction, and a later unaided attempt at the same kind of question. Not a progress report, which any articulate adult can write and which tells you only how well they write. Every tutor we match expects this request. One who resists it has answered a different question for you.

Be wary of a tutor who offers a guaranteed grade, a promised number of marks or a published success rate, including one we have introduced you to. Nobody can promise an outcome, because the paper, the moderation and the student's own decisions in the examination room are outside anyone's control. IB Gram does not guarantee grades, does not publish success rates and does not rank tutors, and we are an independent platform with no affiliation to JBCN International School, Oshiwara, Billabong High International School or any other school a family in Lokhandwala attends.

  • We verify identity, the programme and level claimed, and describable history
  • Vague descriptions of teaching experience stop a profile going out
  • Temperament fit is yours to judge, which is what the discovery call is for
  • At four weeks, ask for marked attempts in your child's handwriting
  • Be wary of a guaranteed grade or a quoted success rate from anyone, including us

What does the free discovery call actually involve?

A conversation between you and a shortlisted tutor, with no payment, no commitment and no obligation to proceed with anybody. It usually runs fifteen to twenty minutes and it is not a trial lesson. The purpose is for you to establish three things: that this person has taught your child's exact programme and level, that their description of a first session is a diagnosis rather than a lecture, and that you can imagine your child working for them. Your child can be on the call or not, and for a reluctant teenager it is often better if they are, briefly, at the end.

The questions worth asking are specific and short. Which programme, level and subject have you taught, and for how many cohorts? Have you supervised this subject's internal assessment, and what do students usually get wrong on it? How would you spend the first forty minutes? What will you send me after four sessions? Which evenings can you hold for a full term? And what would make you tell me this is not working? A tutor who answers all six concretely is the strongest signal a parent can get, and the last question is the one that separates an honest teacher from a confident one.

You are also allowed to say no to all of them, and a surprising number of parents do not realise this. Declining the whole shortlist is information rather than a failure: it usually means the brief was missing something, most often about temperament or timing, and the second shortlist is better for it. IB Gram home tuition in Lokhandwala is not a subscription you have joined by asking for profiles, and nothing is owed until you approve a tutor and a lesson happens.

After the call, if you approve someone, we confirm the slot, the rate, the mode and the review date in writing so there is no ambiguity about any of them. Fees are agreed before the first session, never after. We will not quote a price list on a public page because the honest answer is a range that depends on level, subject scarcity, travel and session length, and a number printed here would be wrong for most families reading it. What we will do is tell you what the range depends on and then give you a specific figure for your specific match.

  • Fifteen to twenty minutes, no payment, no commitment, not a trial lesson
  • Establish programme and level, how they diagnose, and whether your child will work for them
  • Ask what would make them say the arrangement is not working
  • You may decline the entire shortlist; the second one is usually better for it
  • Slot, rate, mode and review date confirmed in writing before the first session

What we will not promise to a family in Mumbai

A grade, a number of marks, a percentage improvement or a timeline to one. Those are the four things parents most want to hear and none of them can be honestly promised, because the paper varies between series, internal assessment is moderated externally, and a sixteen-year-old makes their own decisions in an examination room. What tuition can do is improve the odds: a student who has worked past papers under timed conditions, who sets out method so an examiner can award it, and who submitted considered rather than rushed internal work is in a better position than one who has not. That is the whole of the claim and we would rather state it plainly than dress it up.

We also will not promise that the first match is the right one. It frequently is and sometimes it is not, and the honest design response to that is a short review cycle and a frictionless replacement rather than a confident sales pitch. Every two to four weeks we ask whether it is working, and the question is answered against marked work. If the answer is no, we re-match with no notice period and no package to complete, and the second match is usually better because the first month produced real evidence about what this student needs.

There are three things we will not do that parents occasionally ask for. We will not arrange for a tutor to improve a piece of assessed coursework before submission, because that work is authenticated as the student's own and it puts the child at risk. We will not promise a specific named tutor on a public page or publish testimonials attached to names. And we will not tell you tuition is needed when the honest answer is a conversation with the school about a level or tier decision, even though that conversation costs us the booking.

The last limit is about what sits underneath performance. Sleep is the most common and the least discussed: a final-year student in Mumbai on a long bus commute and a 1am bedtime will plateau whatever anyone teaches, and no arrangement of IB Gram home tuition in Lokhandwala changes that. Motivation is next, although a good tutor often gets further with a reluctant student than a parent can, precisely because they are not the parent. And documentation for internal work cannot be reconstructed after the fact. We say all of this before a family books rather than after.

  • No promised grade, mark count, percentage improvement or timeline to one
  • No promise that the first match is right; reviews and replacement instead
  • We will not touch assessed coursework before submission, on any request
  • We will say when the answer is a school conversation rather than a tutor
  • Sleep, motivation and missing documentation are outside what tuition fixes

Booking IB Gram home classes in Lokhandwala

Send four things. The programme and level as the report writes them. The one or two subjects where marks are leaking. Two realistic evening windows that survive the school bus and dinner. And a photograph of recent marked work, which narrows a shortlist faster than any description. All IB and IGCSE subjects IB and IGCSE, Years 1-12 tutor Mumbai enquiries arriving with marked work attached get a better shortlist, because the evidence tells us what kind of tutor is needed before anyone has met the student.

You will get two or three verified profiles with programme, level and components named on each, and a free discovery call with whichever of them you want to speak to. Lessons begin only after you approve a specific tutor, and the slot, rate, mode and review date are confirmed in writing first. Nothing is prepaid, nothing is packaged, and there is no notice period if you stop. A family in Lokhandwala Complex is free to try one month and decide it was not needed.

Session one is a diagnosis and should be introduced to your child as one. The tutor puts a past-paper question or a recent assessment down and watches, stopping at the point the method or the reasoning fails rather than at the wrong final answer. By the end of the hour you should have topics in priority order, a note on the habits costing marks, and a plan for the next three sessions. If what comes back is a lecture and a book list, tell us, because that is a match problem rather than a child problem.

After that the rhythm is simple. Marked work at four weeks, a review every two to four weeks, a replacement without argument if the fit is wrong, and an honest conversation whenever the right answer is something other than more hours. An IB private tutor Lokhandwala neighbours already use may well end up on your shortlist, and that is fine; we will still check the programme and level, because a referral proves reliability and never subject depth.

  • Have ready: programme and level, leaking subjects, two evening windows, marked work
  • Two or three profiles, a free call, and lessons only after you approve
  • Slot, rate, mode and review date in writing before the first session
  • Nothing prepaid, nothing packaged, no notice period if you stop
  • Marked work at four weeks and a replacement without argument if needed
FAQs

Lokhandwala tutoring — questions parents ask

Does IB Gram employ the tutors, or is it an agency?+

IB Gram is an independent matching service. The tutors are independent teachers whose identity, programme and level experience we verify, and the teaching relationship is between you and the tutor you approve. We are not a coaching chain, we do not run centres, and we are not affiliated with any school in Lokhandwala or elsewhere in Mumbai. Practically, that means we are responsible for the quality of the match, for the review cycle and for replacing a tutor who is not working, and the tutor is responsible for the teaching.

Can a tutor travel to our building in Lokhandwala Complex for an evening slot?+

Yes, and we match from within the Andheri catchment for exactly that reason. Tutors already working in Andheri West, Oshiwara or Versova reach Lokhandwala Complex in minutes, while a tutor from across the Western Express Highway is making a decision every week about a 6.30pm trip. Tell us the gate procedure, whether a recurring visitor pass can be issued and whether the lift queues at 7pm, and we put it in the brief so it is solved once rather than negotiated every week at the gate.

What happens on the free discovery call?+

You speak to a shortlisted tutor for fifteen to twenty minutes, with no payment and no commitment. It is not a trial lesson. You establish that they have taught your child's exact programme and level, that their idea of a first session is a diagnosis rather than a lecture, and that you can imagine your child working for them. Ask what they would send you after four sessions and what would make them say the arrangement is not working. You can decline the whole shortlist and ask for another.

What do IB tuition fees in Lokhandwala depend on?+

Level first, then subject scarcity, then travel distance and session length. Higher Level Diploma teaching costs more than middle-years support because fewer tutors can do it, and a scarce language or an organic chemistry specialist costs more than a widely available mathematics tutor. We will not print a price list, because any single figure would be wrong for most families reading this page. We tell you the range for your specific match before the first session, and the rate, slot and mode go in writing.

Do I have to commit to a package of sessions?+

No, and we deliberately do not sell them. A parent who has prepaid for twenty hours cannot change a bad match without an argument, which makes the prepayment a trap rather than a discount. The arrangement is reviewed every two to four weeks against your child's marked work, you can stop at any point with no notice period, and if the fit is wrong we re-match without asking you to persist. The second match is usually better because the first month produced evidence about what the student actually needs.

What if the tutor is not working out?+

Tell us and we re-match, with no notice period and nothing to complete. Be specific about what failed rather than polite about it, because the detail is what makes the second match better. A parent who says the tutor was pleasant but never set written work has told us exactly what to look for. A parent who says it was not clicking has not, and the next match becomes another guess. Four weeks is the right moment to raise it; waiting until the mock results arrive narrows the options considerably.

Can one tutor cover both my children if they are on different boards?+

Occasionally in mathematics and rarely across four subjects. The arrangement that works in a dual-board household is two specialists sharing one evening, one table and one visitor pass rather than one generalist stretched across both systems. Higher Level Diploma work exposes a tutor operating slightly above their comfort, and the usual symptom is that the younger child progresses while the older one plateaus. Ask whether a shortlisted tutor can take the hour immediately after another, which costs each of them one trip instead of two.

Will a tutor help with coursework or internal assessment before submission?+

They will coach the question, the method and the structure, and they will not write or improve any part of it. Internal assessment and coursework are authenticated as your child's own work, so a tutor who offers to polish a draft before submission is creating a risk rather than providing help, and we do not arrange it on any request. What a good tutor does is interrogate the research question, insist the process is documented as it happens, and read a draft the way a moderator would.

Can IB Gram advise on whether to take Higher Level or Standard Level?+

We will discuss it, and sometimes the honest conclusion is that no tuition is needed yet. A level or tier decision is better taken on evidence than on reputation, so a few diagnostic sessions before it is settled are worth more than a term of remedial work afterwards. If a student is genuinely drowning at Higher Level, the right next step is a conversation with the school about the level rather than a third weekly session, and we will say so even though it costs us the booking.

Which parts of Mumbai do you cover for an evening home session?+

Lokhandwala Complex, Andheri West, Oshiwara and Versova for weekday home sessions, with a wider pool available for weekend mornings because Metro Line 1 and Metro Lines 2A and 7 make a longer trip viable outside the evening peak. We match along the Western Line rather than across the Western Express Highway, because a cross-highway 6.30pm slot reliably fails by week seven. If we tell you a profile is a poor geographic fit, that is the reason rather than a preference about tutors.

Does IB Gram guarantee results?+

No. We do not guarantee grades, publish success rates or promise a number of marks, because the paper varies between series, internal assessment is moderated externally, and a student makes their own decisions in the examination room. What tuition can do is improve the odds through timed past-paper practice, clear method and internal work submitted considered rather than rushed. We are an independent platform, not affiliated with any school named here, and we would rather state that limit before you book than explain it afterwards.
