How IB Gram home tuition in Chembur works, step by step

The process has five steps and the first four cost nothing. You send a brief. We run a discovery call, usually twenty to thirty minutes, with the parent and ideally the student. We build a shortlist of two or three verified profiles who can hold a slot you can actually keep, each with a short written reason for why they are on the list. You choose one. The first lesson happens, framed as a diagnostic, and a written review follows two to four weeks later. Nothing is charged before you have chosen a named tutor and agreed a slot.

Two deliberate constraints are worth explaining because they are unusual. First, the shortlist is short. A list of fifteen profiles transfers the judgement back to the parent who told us they could not judge, which is not a service. Two or three, with a reason attached to each and an honest note on which we think fits, is a more useful thing to hand somebody. Second, we do not send anybody to your building on the strength of a web form. The discovery call exists because a form cannot tell us whether the problem is a topic, a habit or a wrongly chosen subject.

The step that does most of the work is the brief, and it is mostly information you already have. Programme and year. Subjects and levels. The most recent marked work, which is more useful than the report. The teacher's comment, verbatim. And the two weekday evening windows your household can genuinely protect rather than the ideal ones. That last item determines which tutors are actually available to you as opposed to theoretically available, and it is the detail parents most often skip.

One thing stated at the top rather than the bottom: IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching service, not a coaching chain, and it is not affiliated with JBCN International School, Chembur, Witty International School, the IB Organization, Cambridge International Education or Pearson Edexcel. We do not guarantee grades and we publish no success rate. Everything below describes a process, not an outcome, because the process is the part we control. IB Gram home tuition in Chembur, Mumbai runs the same way for a Year 3 reading problem as for a Higher Level Chemistry crisis, and the home classes are arranged around the household's week rather than ours.

  • 1. Send a brief: programme, year, subjects, marked work, teacher's comment.
  • 2. Free discovery call with the parent and, if they will sit, the student.
  • 3. Two or three verified profiles, each with a written reason attached.
  • 4. You choose one; the first lesson is a diagnostic and sets two priorities.
  • 5. A written review follows in two to four weeks and you decide what next.

Which programmes and levels we can actually cover in Chembur

Across the International Baccalaureate (IB) we cover the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP) Years 1 to 5, and the Diploma Programme (DP) at both Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL). Availability is not uniform and we would rather say so than let you discover it in week three. Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics and English specialists are available in reasonable numbers within reach of Chembur station. Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Visual Arts, Music and the less common Language B options are genuinely scarce, and for those the honest proposal is often an online specialist rather than the nearest willing generalist. Across all IB and IGCSE subjects a tutor in Chembur covers, availability is what decides whether we propose a home visit or an IB online tutor in Chembur, and the all IB and IGCSE subjects home classes Chembur parents ask for on a form are almost always better served by two specialists than one.

Level matching is not a formality. Higher Level papers ask for synthesis across topics and explanations that include a mechanism; Standard Level often accepts a correct statement. A tutor who has taught three years of Standard Level can be excellent and have no recent sense of where Higher Level students lose marks. So every profile we send states the programme, the level and the year groups taught in the last two years, with a year attached. If a profile cannot state that, it does not go on a shortlist.

For the Middle Years Programme there is an additional requirement specific to the programme, and it is one families rarely think to ask about. Schools design their own assessment tasks within the framework, so a tutor must work from your school's own criterion descriptors and task sheets rather than from a generic textbook. We ask Middle Years Programme tutors to request the rubric before the first session as a matter of routine, because a tutor teaching a different course from the one your child is assessed on will not move anything.

We also cover the independent-work side, which sits outside any subject: the Extended Essay (EE), Theory of Knowledge, internal assessments and the Middle Years Programme personal project. This is coaching rather than teaching, and the line is firm. A tutor may question a research question, point out that a plan has no checkpoints, and say honestly that a reflection says nothing. A tutor may not choose the question, supply content or write any part of a draft, and an offer to do so ends our relationship with that tutor.

  • PYP, MYP Years 1 to 5, and DP at Higher and Standard Level
  • Mathematics, sciences, Economics and English are reasonably available here
  • Theory of Knowledge, Arts and minor Language B options are scarce
  • Every profile states programme, level and year groups taught, with a year
  • MYP tutors request the school's own rubric before the first session

What should a good tutoring brief contain?

Five things, and four of them are already in your house. The programme, year and level. The subject or subjects, named specifically rather than as sciences. The most recent marked piece of work, photographed, including the part most parents crop out, which is the long structured question or the data question. The teacher's comment copied exactly rather than summarised. And your own two-sentence description of what you have noticed at home, which is more diagnostic than you expect.

That last item deserves explaining. "He understands it in class and falls apart in a timed paper" and "she has never understood indices" lead to different tutors in the same subject and year group. So does "he has stopped asking for help, which is new". A parent's observation of behaviour is evidence that no report contains, and it routinely changes which of two profiles we put first. We ask for two sentences rather than a page because the discipline of compressing it tends to produce the useful observation.

The marked work matters because a grade conceals the diagnosis almost completely. Two students on the same mark can have entirely different problems: one losing a mark here and there across every question, which is a fluency issue, and one with full marks on the short items and near zero on the structured ones, which is a method and stamina issue. Those two need different tutors and different terms, and only the script distinguishes them. We will ask for it if you do not send it, so sending it saves a round trip.

For a Diploma Programme student in DP2 there is a sixth item: the school's deadline calendar for internal assessments and the Extended Essay. It decides whether the term you are buying is a teaching term or a rescue, and it changes which tutor is the right one. A tutor who is excellent at building understanding over twelve weeks is not the right person for a student with three unstarted drafts and five weeks. We would rather know that before proposing anybody, which is why the brief asks for dates rather than discovering them in November.

  • Programme, year and level, with the subject named specifically
  • A photograph of marked work including the long structured question
  • The teacher's comment copied exactly, not summarised
  • Two sentences on what you have noticed at home
  • For DP2, the school's internal assessment and Extended Essay dates

The Chembur travel reality we schedule around in Mumbai

We schedule by route rather than by distance, because in this part of Mumbai the two give different answers. A tutor working from around Chembur station covers Govandi, Kurla, Tilak Nagar and Wadala on weekday evenings. Govandi and Mankhurd arrive on the Harbour Line (Chembur–Govandi–Mankhurd), which does not touch road traffic, so a six o'clock start is a promise we are willing to make. Tilak Nagar is a single short road hop. Wadala is quick on the Monorail (Chembur–Wadala) despite the extra kilometres. Kurla is close on a map and slow at the junction, so we propose six thirty and keep it fixed for the term rather than promising six and apologising weekly.

That is why we ask every tutor to describe their actual commute to your address rather than estimate a distance. A tutor who says they take the Harbour Line and walk eight minutes is telling us something a kilometre figure cannot. Route reliability is the difference between an arrangement and a good intention, and it is the single biggest predictor of whether a weekly slot is still standing in March.

Chembur gives us one advantage we do not have elsewhere in the Eastern Suburbs, and it changes the quality of the shortlist rather than the convenience. A campus here runs both International Baccalaureate and Cambridge pathways in the same building, and the Monorail and the Eastern Freeway bring Wadala and South Mumbai within an easy hop, so tutors working in Chembur are routinely teaching Diploma Programme families here and Cambridge families a few stops away in the same week. From Vikhroli, Bhandup or Mulund the Central Line and the Eastern Express Highway run one axis, so a tutor commits to a direction and in practice to one board. The dual exposure is what you want when subject levels are being decided, and we can offer more of it from Chembur than from anywhere else in this zone.

The last layer we handle is the building. In gated complexes such as Rustomjee Elements we arrange standing visitor access at the main gate before the first visit rather than after the second awkward Tuesday, and we agree in advance where the lesson happens, which is normally the dining table or a study room the family has booked. If your complex requires a photo identity record or resident approval per entry, tell us on the discovery call and we set it up once. Ten minutes lost at a gate is a sixth of a short lesson, every week, and across a term that is several lessons nobody notices disappearing.

  • Govandi and Mankhurd hold a six o'clock start on the Harbour Line
  • Tilak Nagar is the quickest hop; Wadala runs well on the Monorail
  • Kurla gets a fixed six thirty rather than an optimistic six
  • Every tutor describes their actual route, not an estimated distance
  • Standing gate access is arranged before the first visit

How we plan a term around a Mumbai school calendar

We ask for the school's dates in the brief and build the term backwards from them. The Mumbai international school year runs June to April. September brings the first substantial assessments. The autumn of DP2 is when internal assessment drafts across several subjects and the Extended Essay reach their deadlines within weeks of one another. December brings mocks on the Cambridge side. January is when predicted grades firm up for university applications. March onwards, a tutor can organise what a student already knows and drill technique, and that is the honest ceiling for a March start.

Around Chembur, two school calendars shape most households. JBCN International School, Chembur runs both International Baccalaureate and Cambridge pathways on one campus, so its assessment weeks answer to two sets of requirements and a household with children on different pathways can face both in one fortnight. Witty International School, with campuses in Malad and Chembur, runs its own internal rhythm. We name both as local context only; IB Gram has no relationship with either, and the reason they appear is that their published dates are what a tutor plans around.

The practical output of this is a term plan rather than a series of sessions. For an ordinary week, one longer home session does more than two short ones. For a collision fortnight, where two subjects' deadlines land together, the student needs short frequent contact and three travelling visits in one week is the arrangement most likely to lose one. We agree in advance which weeks are which, and what happens in them, so the decision is made in September rather than on the Tuesday it arrives.

We also tell parents plainly which month they are in. A June or July start buys a tutor runway to work on habits as well as content. A December start after a disappointing mock leaves ten to twelve usable weeks, enough to rebuild two or three topic areas and install visible method. A March start can fix command words, pacing and layout, which is worth real marks, and cannot rebuild a foundation. Saying this costs us bookings in March, and we would rather lose those than sell the wrong expectation.

  • The brief asks for school dates so the term is planned backwards
  • DP2 autumn collides internal assessments with the Extended Essay
  • Ordinary weeks want one long session; collision fortnights want short frequent contact
  • A June start buys habits; a December start buys two or three topics
  • A March start buys technique and cannot rebuild a foundation

What happens when the highway floods and a tutor cannot travel?

The session moves online the same evening, and this is agreed in week one rather than negotiated on the day. In July and August an evening of heavy rain across the Eastern Express Highway cancels travelling tutors across the Eastern Suburbs, and the cost of a cancellation is not the hour; it is the habit. A student who loses three sessions in six weeks has lost the rhythm the arrangement existed to build. So every home arrangement we set up carries a written fallback, and the tutor confirms by a stated time rather than leaving a family waiting.

Home tutoring is the lead format on every arrangement we make, and the reason is mechanical rather than ideological. A tutor in the room sees a student stall and intervenes within seconds, watches the hand while they write, notices the folder nobody can find, and cannot be tabbed away from. For Primary Years and Middle Years students this is close to decisive: a child who still needs an adult present to stay on task will not be served by a screen.

Online is proposed deliberately in three situations and not as a downgrade. For a scarce subject, where the strongest available person does not exist within a sensible travel radius of Chembur. For late-stage supervision of an Extended Essay or an internal assessment, which is reading and questioning and loses little on a call. And for the final weeks before examinations, when the work is marked past papers under clock conditions and three short contacts beat one long visit.

Most families settle into a hybrid by the second term without having planned it: one longer home session carrying the teaching and one short mid-week online contact to check a problem set or read a draft. We now propose that shape at the start for most arrangements in Chembur, because it survives the monsoon, gives two touchpoints a week instead of one, and costs about what two visits would. If you would rather have two full visits, that is also available, and we will say which we think fits your child.

  • Every home arrangement carries a written online fallback from week one
  • A cancellation costs the habit, not just the hour
  • Home tutoring leads on every arrangement, decisively for PYP and MYP
  • Online is proposed for scarce subjects, late drafts and final-weeks papers
  • The hybrid shape gives two weekly touchpoints for about the cost of two visits

How are IB Gram tutors verified before you meet them?

Four checks, in order, and the fourth removes most applicants. Identity, documented. Qualification, documented. Programme and level teaching experience in the last two years, named with a cohort rather than claimed in general. And a subject conversation with somebody who knows the syllabus. That conversation fails applicants almost never for weak subject knowledge; the usual failure is an inability to describe how credit is awarded, which means the tutor will teach your child the subject without teaching them how to be paid for it in marks.

We also take references and ask the previous family a single question: did the child's work change, and when. It is a deliberately narrow question. A reference that says the tutor was lovely and punctual tells us about a person; a reference that says his written working got longer in the second month tells us about the teaching. Where a tutor claims two boards or two programmes, they sit two subject conversations rather than one, and a meaningful number pass one and fail the other.

What verification cannot do is predict whether a particular adult will hold a particular teenager's attention, and we do not pretend otherwise. That is what the diagnostic first lesson and the two-to-four-week written review exist for. The review names the two priorities the tutor set in session one and says what has happened to each, with a sample of the student's work attached where that makes sense. If no such document exists, there is no feedback loop and a parent is buying on faith.

The checks you should run yourself take one call. Ask where students lose marks in your child's exact paper or criterion, and judge the specificity rather than the content. Ask what arrives in writing at four weeks. Ask what would make them say tuition is not the right answer here. And be wary of any tutor who promises a guaranteed grade, because nobody honest can offer one. On fees, IB tuition fees in Chembur depend on the programme and level, the year group, how scarce the specialism is, the travel involved and the session length, and we give the range for your combination on the call rather than publishing a figure that would be wrong for most readers. An IB private tutor Chembur families find independently should face the same four questions, and so should any IB tutor Mumbai agencies put forward.

  • Identity, qualification, recent programme and level experience, subject conversation
  • The subject conversation removes applicants who cannot explain credit
  • References are asked one question: did the work change, and when
  • Dual-board claims sit two subject conversations, not one
  • Fees track programme, level, scarcity, travel and session length

Reviews, replacements and what no lock-in actually means

No lock-in means lessons are arranged week to week after you have chosen a named tutor, there is no notice period, no minimum number of sessions and no term paid in advance. You can stop after one lesson. The reason we work this way is not generosity; it is that a service which can only keep customers by contract has removed its own incentive to fix a bad match quickly. An IB Gram home tutor in Chembur who is not working should be replaced in week two, and a contract makes week ten more likely.

Replacement works like this. Tell us at week two with one specific reason. Too gentle, too fast, and unable to hold a bored fifteen-year-old's attention point at three quite different second choices, so the detail genuinely improves the match rather than being a formality. There is no switching charge. For common subjects a replacement is usually in place within a week; for scarce ones it can take two or three, and we say which before you decide. We treat replacement as a normal operational event, because it is.

The review is the mechanism that makes all of this checkable. It arrives every two to four weeks, names the two priorities set in the diagnostic session, says what has moved and what has not, and avoids general impressions of progress. At four weeks you should be looking at behaviour rather than marks: homework starting without three reminders, written working that is longer and more legible, a child who can explain what they got wrong in their own words, and a tutor's account of the weak areas that agrees with the school's. Three of four moving is a working match.

A parent comparing services will find that most of this is checkable before paying anything, which is the point. Ask any provider whether the shortlist is short, whether there is a discovery call before a profile is proposed, whether a written review arrives at four weeks, and what happens if you want to stop in week three. The answers take five minutes to collect and tell you more than any volume of testimonials. IB Gram home tuition in Chembur is built around those four answers rather than around a sales process, and the comparison is one we would rather you ran. A parent searching best IB tutor in Chembur will not find a name on this page, and a home tutor for all IB and IGCSE subjects Mumbai parents sometimes ask for is rarely the right structure past Year 9 anyway.

  • Week to week after you choose; no notice period and no term in advance
  • A contract removes a service's own incentive to fix a bad match
  • Replacement at week two with one specific reason, no switching charge
  • Scarce subjects take two or three weeks to replace, and we say so first
  • The written review names the two session-one priorities and what moved

What we will not promise, and what we decline

We do not guarantee grades, we publish no success rate and we quote no fee figures on this page. Those three absences are related. A success rate would describe which students a service accepts rather than predicting anything about yours, and any number you see on a tutoring site should be read that way. A published fee would be wrong for most families reading it, because the range depends on level, scarcity, travel and session length. And a grade promise would require us to control the six days a week the tutor is not in your flat.

We also decline work, and it is worth knowing which kinds. A DP1 student failing three Higher Level subjects usually has a subject basket problem rather than a teaching problem, and the conversation that helps is with the Diploma Programme coordinator about moving one subject to Standard Level. Hiring three tutors to hold up that basket buys a term of exhaustion. We say this on discovery calls, regularly, and it costs us bookings.

We decline when a student has stopped sleeping or is clearly unhappy rather than struggling, because an extra adult arriving on a Tuesday to work on Chemistry does not help and the school's own support does. We decline when attendance is the real issue, because that is the first problem and tuition would be a second one. And we will not place a tutor who offers to write any part of an internal assessment, Extended Essay or personal project, because every IB school in Mumbai runs authenticity checks and the consequences for the student are far worse than an honest mediocre mark.

What we will say about outcomes is narrow and true. Consistent weekly work changes outcomes for most students over a year. At four weeks you should see behaviour change; at a term, movement in the targeted areas and little elsewhere. Two students in Chembur with the same tutor and the same starting grade routinely finish two bands apart on the strength of what happened on the untutored days. The tutor owns an hour. The household owns the rest, and no service can sell you that part.

  • No grade guarantees, no success rate, no published fee figures
  • We decline three failing Higher Level subjects as a basket problem
  • We decline when attendance or wellbeing is the real first problem
  • No tutor who offers to write any part of an assessment gets placed
  • The tutor owns one hour; the household owns the other six days

Starting IB Gram home tuition in Chembur, Mumbai

Send the brief and we will come back with two or three profiles. Programme, year and level. Subjects named specifically. A photograph of recent marked work including the long structured question. The teacher's comment copied exactly. Two sentences on what you have noticed at home. And the two weekday evening windows your household can genuinely protect, plus for a DP2 the school's internal assessment and Extended Essay dates.

The discovery call comes before any profile and costs nothing. We would like the student on it if they will sit through it, because a fifteen-year-old's account of what is going wrong is frequently more accurate than anybody else's and almost never matches the report. If they refuse, that is itself useful information and we will work with the parent.

The first lesson is a diagnostic. Expect the tutor to ask for marked school work rather than a textbook, to have the student attempting questions inside twenty minutes, and to close by naming two priorities. Write those down; they are the baseline the review is measured against. Before that lesson, settle the practicalities: who is at home, which table, phones in another room, and standing visitor access at the main gate in a complex such as Rustomjee Elements.

After that, the rhythm is simple. Weekly sessions, a written review every two to four weeks, and a decision point each time. Stop whenever you like. Change tutors whenever you like, with one specific reason so the next match is better aimed. Searches for IB tutors near me Chembur and for IB home tuition in Chembur both tend to arrive looking for a name, and what we offer instead is a short list with reasons and written evidence you can check four weeks later.

  • Send programme, level, marked work, the exact comment and two protected windows
  • Bring the student to the discovery call if they will sit through it
  • Write down the two priorities the tutor names in the first session
  • Settle table, phones and gate access before the first visit
  • Weekly sessions, written review every two to four weeks, stop any time
FAQs

Chembur tutoring — questions parents ask

What exactly does IB Gram do that a local tutor directory does not?+

It narrows rather than lists. A directory hands a parent fifteen profiles, which transfers the judgement back to the person who said they could not judge. We run a free discovery call, work out whether the problem is a topic, a habit or a wrongly chosen subject, and come back with two or three verified profiles with a written reason for each plus an honest note on which we think fits your child. We also send a written review every two to four weeks against the priorities set in the first session, which is the part a directory cannot offer at all.

When do we actually pay anything?+

After you have chosen a named tutor and agreed a slot, and not before. The brief, the discovery call and the shortlist cost nothing. Lessons are arranged week to week; there is no notice period, no minimum number of sessions, no term paid in advance and no lock-in. You can stop after one lesson. We work this way because a service that keeps customers by contract has removed its own incentive to fix a bad match quickly, and a bad match should be replaced in week two rather than week ten.

How do you handle gate access and visitor passes in a Chembur society?+

We arrange standing visitor access at the main gate before the first visit, not after the second awkward Tuesday. In complexes such as Rustomjee Elements that means the tutor is on the list for a recurring weekly slot rather than phoned up from the lobby each week. If your building requires a photo identity record, a resident approval per entry, or a different arrangement for a longer double session, tell us on the discovery call and we set it up once. Ten minutes lost at a gate is a sixth of a short lesson, every week, which across a term is several lessons nobody notices going missing.

What happens if a tutor cannot travel because of the monsoon?+

The session moves online the same evening, and that fallback is written into the arrangement in week one rather than negotiated on the day. In July and August an evening of heavy rain across the Eastern Express Highway cancels travelling tutors across the Eastern Suburbs, and the real cost of a cancellation is the habit rather than the hour. We also ask the tutor to confirm by a stated time rather than leaving a family waiting. A student who loses three sessions in six weeks has lost the rhythm the whole arrangement existed to build.

How are your tutors verified?+

Four checks in order: documented identity, documented qualification, programme and level teaching experience in the last two years named with a cohort, and a subject conversation with somebody who knows the syllabus. The conversation removes most applicants, and almost never for weak subject knowledge; the usual failure is being unable to describe how credit is awarded. We also take references and ask the previous family one narrow question: did the child's work change, and when. Where a tutor claims two boards or two programmes, they sit two subject conversations, and a meaningful number pass one and fail the other.

What is in the four-week review?+

The two priorities the tutor named in the diagnostic first session, what has happened to each, and a sample of the student's work where that makes sense. Deliberately not a general impression of progress, because impressions are what both sides want to believe. At four weeks you should be looking at behaviour rather than marks: homework starting without three reminders, written working that is longer and more legible, a child who can explain what they got wrong in their own words, and a tutor's account of the weak areas that agrees with the school's.

Which areas around Chembur do you cover?+

Govandi, Kurla, Tilak Nagar and Wadala on weekday evenings, scheduled by route rather than distance. Govandi and Mankhurd arrive on the Harbour Line, which does not touch road traffic, so a six o'clock start is a promise we are willing to make. Tilak Nagar is a single short hop. Wadala is quick on the Monorail despite the extra kilometres. Kurla is close on a map and slow at the junction in the evening peak, so we propose six thirty and keep it fixed for the term rather than promising six and apologising weekly.

What subjects can you not cover well from Chembur?+

Theory of Knowledge, Visual Arts, Music and the less common Language B options, where the pool within a sensible travel radius is genuinely thin. For those we usually propose an online specialist from a national pool rather than the nearest willing generalist, and we say so on the first call rather than three weeks later. Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics and English specialists are available in reasonable numbers within reach of Chembur station, so for those you should hold out for an exact level match rather than accepting an approximate one.

Will you ever tell us not to hire a tutor?+

Yes, and it happens on discovery calls regularly. A DP1 student failing three Higher Level subjects usually has a subject basket problem rather than a teaching problem, and the conversation that helps is with the Diploma Programme coordinator about moving one subject to Standard Level. We also decline when a student has stopped sleeping or is clearly unhappy rather than struggling, because the school's own support comes first, and when attendance is the real issue. It costs us bookings, which is the only real evidence anybody can offer that they mean it.

Can you help with the Extended Essay or an internal assessment?+

As coaching, with a firm line. A tutor may question a research question, point out that a plan has no checkpoints, say that a conclusion does not follow from the data, and tell a student honestly that a reflection says nothing. A tutor may not choose the question, supply content or write any part of a draft. Every IB school in Mumbai runs authenticity checks, and the consequences for a student whose work was improved by somebody else are far worse than an honest ordinary mark. A tutor who offers to help write it does not get placed by us.

How quickly can lessons start?+

Usually within a week for the common subjects, two to three for scarce ones, and the limiting factor is normally your own schedule rather than ours. The sequence does not change: brief, discovery call, two or three profiles, your choice, then the first lesson. We will not compress it by sending somebody to your building off a form submission, because a form cannot tell us whether the problem is a topic, a habit or a wrongly chosen subject, and that distinction decides which of two tutors is the right one.

Are you affiliated with any Chembur school, and do you promise results?+

Neither. IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching service, not a coaching chain, and it is not affiliated with JBCN International School, Chembur, Witty International School, the IB Organization, Cambridge International Education or Pearson Edexcel. We name schools because their published calendars and deadlines are what a tutor has to plan a term around. We do not guarantee grades and publish no success rate, because such a figure would describe which students we accept rather than telling you anything about your own child's situation.
