How a request for IB Gram fees in Mumbai turns into a shortlist

A rate exists only once a request exists. Tell us the board, the subject, the year, the area and the two evenings you can hold, and a coordinator reads it the same way a tutor will: can I get there by seven, do I know this syllabus at this level, can I commit to that slot until the examination series. Only tutors who answer yes to all three are contacted, and each one quotes their own rate for that pattern rather than reading a figure off a tariff card.

That is why IB Gram fees in Mumbai are quoted per match and never printed as an hourly number on a public page. The same subject, the same year and the same school can produce two very different quotes because one tutor lives in the next lane and the other crosses the Western Express Highway at seven in the evening. Parents who type searches like IB tutors near me in Mumbai are already halfway to the answer: proximity is a price factor here, not a convenience.

Expect an IB home tutor in Mumbai to ask questions before quoting, and treat that as a good sign. A Diploma Programme (DP) Physics Higher Level (HL) teacher will want to know whether the Internal Assessment (IA) draft is written, because supervising a half-finished investigation in February is different work from teaching mechanics in July. A Middle Years Programme (MYP) parent will be asked which criteria the last report flagged. The quote follows the work, so vague requests produce vague figures and precise requests produce a rate you can hold a tutor to.

Nothing is charged for the matching itself, and the shortlist arrives with the rate already attached to each name so you are comparing like with like: same subject, same session length, same travel. Where two quotes differ, the difference is explainable, and you should ask what explains it. IB Gram is an independent platform, not affiliated with any school named on this page, and we do not guarantee grades. What the process can do is make the cost of a term predictable before you commit an evening to it.

  • 1. Send the board, subject, year, area and the evenings you can hold.
  • 2. A coordinator filters for syllabus level, travel reach and slot availability.
  • 3. Matching tutors quote their own rate for that exact session pattern.
  • 4. You receive a shortlist with each rate attached, then meet one tutor.
  • 5. Agree rate, length, payment timing and missed-session policy before session one.

Why does a DP Higher Level tutor in Mumbai cost more than an MYP one?

Because the pool is smaller. The number of teachers in Mumbai who have taught, marked or examined International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) subjects at Higher Level (HL) is a fraction of the number who can teach Middle Years Programme (MYP) classes well, and a scarce skill is priced like one. Level, not effort, is the first fee factor any parent should reason about.

Walk up the ladder and you can place yourself on it. Primary Years Programme (PYP) support draws the broadest pool, because a strong primary teacher with inquiry experience covers it. MYP work needs someone fluent in the criteria and the command terms, and in the eAssessment years that pool narrows again. Cambridge International Education IGCSE sits above it, with the Core and Extended split deciding how specialised the teaching has to be. DP Standard Level (SL) is a genuine specialism, and DP HL is a smaller specialism still.

The Core and Extended decision carries a fee consequence parents rarely expect. A student moved from Core to Extended Mathematics in Year 10 needs someone who can teach the extra content and the harder paper technique at speed, and that is closer to DP-level work than to ordinary IGCSE revision. The same applies to a student taking a subject at HL after a weak SL prediction: the gap is in technique rather than content, and technique teaching is the expensive kind because very few teachers can do it in a term.

Then there is the supervision layer, which sits on top of teaching and is priced separately in a tutor's head. The Extended Essay (EE), the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) essay and each subject's Internal Assessment (IA) are marked against criteria most parents have never read, and a tutor who has sat on a moderation panel reads a draft in minutes rather than hours. Pearson Edexcel and Cambridge coursework behave the same way. One enquiry covers all IB and IGCSE subjects spanning IB and IGCSE, Years 1-12 home tuition in Mumbai, from a PYP reading gap to a DP2 retake, but the rate inside it moves with the level.

  • PYP support draws on the widest teacher pool in Mumbai
  • MYP needs criteria fluency and command-term teaching, not just subject knowledge
  • IGCSE Core to Extended moves a student into near-DP teaching
  • DP SL is a specialism; DP HL is a narrower one again
  • EE, TOK and IA supervision is priced as examiner-grade work

Subject scarcity: what a Maths AA HL home tutor in Mumbai actually prices

Subject scarcity is the second fee factor and it bites harder than the level factor. Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA) at Higher Level, Physics HL and the Language B subjects sit at the thin end of the Mumbai supply curve, because each needs a teacher who is both qualified in the subject and current with the IB's own assessment style.

Maths AA HL is the clearest case. The syllabus carries proof, calculus and a Paper 3 that asks an unfamiliar extended question, so a tutor has to be comfortable being watched while solving something they have not seen before. Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (AI) at Standard Level draws a far wider pool, which is why a family switching a child from AA HL to AI SL often sees the quote move as much as the timetable does. Physics HL behaves identically, with the option topic and the treatment of uncertainties separating the teachers who can from the teachers who believe they can.

Languages are the quiet scarcity nobody plans for. French B, Spanish B, German B and Hindi B at Higher Level need a near-native speaker who can also teach the individual oral and the written assignment against the criteria, and in Mumbai that combination is rare enough that online matching is often the honest answer rather than a compromise. Language A: Literature is easier to staff and harder to teach well, because the comparative essay rewards a reader rather than a summariser, and a tutor who only knows the set texts runs out of material by the second month.

On the Cambridge side the syllabus codes tell you where the pool thins. IGCSE Mathematics (0580) and English as a First Language (0500) are widely taught across the city; Additional Mathematics (0606), Physics (0625) at the harder end and Economics (0455) with its data-response paper are narrower. A request for all IB and IGCSE subjects home tuition in Mumbai is answered subject by subject rather than as a bundle, because the person who can repair Chemistry (0620) paper technique is rarely the person who can rescue a Business Management IA three weeks before submission.

  • Maths AA HL and Physics HL sit at the thin end of supply
  • Switching from AA HL to AI SL usually changes the quote too
  • Language B at HL needs a near-native speaker trained on IB criteria
  • Widely taught codes like 0580 and 0500 draw broader tutor pools
  • Each subject is matched separately, never as one bundled rate

What does home tuition cost across Mumbai's six zones?

It depends on the evening, not the distance. A tutor prices the block of time your session consumes, and in Mumbai, Maharashtra that block includes the road. IB Gram fees in Mumbai follow the evening rather than the kilometre, which is why a Kasarvadavali booking and a Dadar booking of identical length are quoted differently by the same tutor.

South Mumbai is short-distance and slow. A tutor moving from Worli to Colaba, Cuffe Parade or Peddar Road covers very little ground and can still lose most of an hour to the Haji Ali and Peddar Road signals, so tutors here are matched inside the island rather than brought down the Western Line. The Coastal Road and Metro Line 3 have eased the Walkeshwar and Cuffe Parade runs. In the Western Suburbs the rule is to match along the line: Bandra West to Khar West to Santacruz West holds for a year, Juhu to Goregaon East at seven in the evening does not, even with the Western Express Highway, Link Road, Metro Line 2A and Metro Line 7 all pointing the same way.

The Central Suburbs hang off the Central Line and the Eastern Express Highway, with Powai and Chandivali reached by road from Andheri East, Ghatkopar or Kanjurmarg because Powai has no station of its own; the JVLR and the Santacruz–Chembur Link Road (SCLR) decide whether that trip takes twenty minutes or fifty. Mulund tutors cover Mulund and sometimes cross into Thane. In the Eastern Suburbs, Chembur, Govandi, Wadala, Vikhroli and Bhandup are served by the Harbour and Central lines, and the Eastern Freeway makes a Chembur tutor a realistic weekday option for a Wadala family in a way the map hides completely.

Navi Mumbai works node to node. Vashi, Nerul, Seawoods, Belapur, Kharghar and Panvel each sit a short run from the next along Palm Beach Road and the Sion–Panvel Highway, with the Navi Mumbai Metro and the Trans-Harbour Line carrying the rest; the Atal Setu has made a Panvel-to-island-city trip possible without making it sensible for a weekly evening home class. Thane spreads from the station out along Pokhran Road, Majiwada and Ghodbunder Road to Kasarvadavali and Hiranandani Estate, and the Ghodbunder stretch alone can double a tutor's travel time after six. Booking a tutor who must cross the Bandra–Worli Sea Link twice a week is the arrangement most likely to collapse by October.

  • South Mumbai tutors are matched within the island, not brought from the suburbs
  • Western Suburbs matching works along the Western Line, rarely across it
  • Powai has no station, so tutors arrive by road via the JVLR
  • The Eastern Freeway makes Chembur and Wadala closer than the map suggests
  • Navi Mumbai and Thane are matched node to node and corridor to corridor

The Mumbai school calendar decides when tutoring gets expensive

Demand, not policy, makes some months dearer than others. The Mumbai international school year opens in June, and families at Dhirubhai Ambani International School in Bandra Kurla Complex, the American School of Bombay, Ecole Mondiale World School in Juhu and Oberoi International School on JVLR all reach the same assessment weeks together, so the good evening slots are gone by late September.

The pressure points are predictable enough to plan around. October and November carry the first MYP and DP internal deadlines plus the Cambridge October series, and the Diwali break interrupts exactly the fortnight most families had earmarked for catch-up. January and February are mock-examination months and the heaviest IA fortnight of the DP2 year, when a Chembur student can have a Physics IA draft and a TOK essay due in the same week. March to May is the examination run itself, when nobody is taking on new subjects.

School-level calendars matter more than the board calendar. Cathedral and John Connon School in Fort, Bombay International School at Babulnath, B.D. Somani International School in Cuffe Parade and Activity High School on Peddar Road set their own internal deadlines; Hiranandani Foundation School in Powai, NES International School in Mulund West, Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania School in Thane and D.Y. Patil International School in Nerul sit in different traffic zones as well as different calendars. A request in August is easier to fill than the identical request in January, because in August you are choosing from tutors and in January tutors are choosing from you.

Naming a school here is local context and nothing more. IB Gram is an independent platform with no affiliation to any school, board or examination body mentioned, and we do not guarantee grades or predicted-grade changes. What the calendar does tell you is when to ask. Book a standing slot in June or July and you are negotiating a rate. Ask in February for a DP2 Maths AA HL slot and you are negotiating availability, which is the more expensive thing to be short of in this city.

  • June to September is when standing evening slots are still available
  • October and November collide with the Diwali break and the Cambridge series
  • January and February are mock months and the heaviest IA fortnight
  • A February request buys availability rather than a better rate
  • School calendars differ even between two IB schools in one zone

Home tuition, online or hybrid: what each one does to the fee

Home tutoring is the lead service and the most expensive to deliver, because the tutor is selling an evening rather than an hour. A ninety-minute home class in Kandivali East can occupy three hours of a tutor's day door to door, and any honest quote reflects that. Travel load is the single most underrated part of what a Mumbai family actually pays for.

Online removes the travel and leaves the scarcity. Book an IB online tutor in Mumbai and the Maths AA HL specialist sitting in Thane becomes available to a family in Cuffe Parade, and the part of IB Gram fees in Mumbai that pays for travel disappears from the quote entirely. What does not disappear is the supervision cost: a DP2 Economics IA takes the same reading hours wherever the tutor is sitting. Online also fails quietly for younger students, so PYP and early MYP work usually belongs at the dining table with an adult in the room.

Hybrid is where most families end up, and it is worth asking for by name instead of discovering it in March. One home class a week to hold the routine, plus a short online clinic before a test, costs less than two home visits and keeps the travel load at a single evening. In the weeks before the May session, families on Ghodbunder Road and in Panvel often flip the ratio completely: online on weekday evenings, one long session at the weekend when the roads are survivable and the student has the energy for two papers.

The honest trade-offs are these. Home tuition gives you attention, a tutor who sees the study space and a child who cannot quietly close a tab, but it loses time to traffic and the session can start late through nobody's fault. Online is punctual, recordable and cheaper on travel, and it demands a wired desk, a charged device and a parent who looks in twice. A tutor who cheerfully agrees to cross the city every weekday evening is usually the tutor who cancels in August.

  • Home tuition prices an evening, not an hour: travel is folded in
  • Online drops the travel load and leaves the subject scarcity premium
  • Hybrid holds one home class a week plus a short online clinic
  • PYP and early MYP learners do poorly in long online sessions
  • A weekday cross-city visit is the arrangement most likely to lapse

How does IB Gram check a tutor in Mumbai before you pay anything?

Identity, qualification and board experience are checked before a name reaches you. IB Gram verifies a government photo identity document, the degree a tutor claims and the IB or Cambridge teaching history they describe, then interviews them on the specific subject and level they want to be matched for. Profiles that fail any of those steps are not sent to families.

The subject interview is the part that matters for fees. A tutor asking to be listed for Physics HL is asked to talk through an uncertainty calculation and an unseen past-paper question; one asking for MYP English is asked how they would mark against Criterion C and what feedback they would write underneath. This is why a verified tutor quotes more confidently: they have already demonstrated the level they are charging for, and they know a parent can test it in the first session.

Then do your own checks, because those are the ones that protect your money. Ask which syllabus version the tutor last taught and which examination series they prepared students for. Ask them to mark one of your child's past-paper answers in front of you and explain the mark scheme line by line. Ask what the first three sessions would contain. An IB private tutor in Mumbai who cannot answer those three questions in plain language is not cheap at any rate, because you will be paying for the weeks it takes to find out.

Verification has limits worth stating plainly. A checked profile is evidence of competence, not of chemistry with your child, and we do not guarantee grades or examination outcomes. Nothing in a document predicts whether a fifteen-year-old will work for this particular adult on a Tuesday evening. That is what the first session is for, and it is why re-matching exists at no extra matching cost: a tutor who is right on paper and wrong in the room should be changed in week two, not endured until the mocks.

  • Photo identity, degree and claimed board experience checked before any shortlist
  • Subject interview at the exact level the tutor wants to teach
  • Ask the tutor to mark a past-paper answer in front of you
  • Ask which syllabus version and examination series they last taught
  • Re-matching carries no additional matching charge at any point

What do IB Gram fees in Mumbai actually depend on?

Seven things, in roughly this order of weight. IB Gram fees in Mumbai rest on the board and programme, the scarcity of the subject, how close the examination is, the session length and frequency, the travel load the tutor absorbs, whether teaching happens at home or online, and whether one child or two are in the room.

Board and programme set the floor, because they decide which pool you are hiring from. Subject scarcity then moves the quote inside that pool, which is why two DP HL requests from the same building can be priced differently. Exam proximity acts like a surcharge nobody announces: by January a good tutor is turning work away, and a parent asking about IB tuition fees in Mumbai eleven weeks before Paper 1 is asking for the scarcest commodity in this market, which is a free Tuesday evening in February.

Session design is the factor families control, and the one most often got wrong. Two ninety-minute sessions a week cost more than one but usually work better than a single two-and-a-half-hour marathon, because attention rather than time is the binding limit. A pair of siblings taking the same subject at the same level shares one evening and one journey, and tutors price that as one job with an uplift rather than as two bookings; siblings in different years or different programmes are two jobs and should be quoted as two. Travel holds the biggest surprises, and it works in blocks: a tutor who accepts a six o'clock slot in Powai or Kasarvadavali is giving up that entire evening, not forty minutes of it.

A published number would be a guess dressed as information. Until the subject, the level, the slot and the address exist, the variables that set a rate do not, and a figure quoted without them would be wrong in both directions at once: high enough to frighten a family who needed one term of MYP Maths support, low enough to mislead a DP2 family who needs a Physics HL examiner on a Saturday morning in Kharghar. So the rate comes from the tutor, after the request, in writing, and the useful service is explaining the factors clearly enough that you can predict your own range before anyone quotes you.

  • Board and programme set which tutor pool you are hiring from
  • Scarce subjects move the quote upward inside that pool
  • Exam proximity behaves like an unannounced surcharge on availability
  • Two shorter sessions usually beat one long one for the same money
  • A sibling pair in one subject shares the evening and the journey
  • Travel is charged as an evening block, not as kilometres covered

Why does the cheapest quote in Mumbai often cost more over a term?

Because the cheapest quote usually comes from the least committed evening. A tutor who underprices a cross-city slot is a tutor who will renegotiate it, cancel it through the monsoon or drop it the moment a nearer booking appears, and a term broken in three places costs far more than the difference in the rate ever saved.

Count the real cost of churn before you choose on price. Losing a tutor in week five means two weeks of silence, a fortnight of re-matching and a new adult who spends three sessions discovering the gaps the last one had already found. In a DP2 year that is the IA window gone. The best IB tutor in Mumbai for your child is usually neither the lowest quote nor the highest: it is the one whose travel and timetable make your slot easy to keep from June to May.

Progress has a shape, and knowing it stops you paying for panic later. At four weeks you should see a diagnosis you recognise, command terms being used correctly and one paper-technique habit fixed, not a grade jump. At one term, expect steadier class tests, IA drafts arriving before the school deadline and a predicted grade that has stopped sliding. Across a full examination cycle the gains come from past-paper discipline and mark-scheme literacy. We do not guarantee grades, and a tutor who does is telling you something about their honesty rather than their teaching.

Signals that a rate is honest: it arrives with a session length, a stated travel assumption and a cancellation rule. Signals to question: a quote that drops sharply the moment you hesitate, a whole term demanded upfront before any teaching has happened, or a promise about a final grade. Paying monthly for sessions already delivered, against a short written agreement, keeps the incentive where it belongs and makes a change of tutor a one-week problem instead of a refund negotiation in the middle of mock season.

  • An honest quote names session length, travel assumption and cancellation terms
  • Four weeks buys diagnosis and technique, not a grade jump
  • One term should show IA drafts landing before school deadlines
  • Question any quote that falls sharply the moment you hesitate
  • Pay after sessions delivered so changing tutors stays a small problem

What to agree before session one, and what a first home class covers

Arrive at the first conversation with five things and the quote becomes concrete: the last report card, the subject outline or IA brief, the two evenings you can genuinely hold every week, the address with its gate and parking reality, and the one problem you most want fixed. A home tutor who has all five can price the work instead of guessing at it.

Agree six points before the first session, in a message if nothing else: the rate and the session length it covers; how many sessions a week; when payment happens, which is usually per session or at the end of each month; how much notice a cancellation needs and who absorbs a late one; what happens across school holidays and the Diwali break; and what happens if you change tutors mid-term. Families who settle those six spend the year arguing about Physics instead of arguing about money.

The first home class is diagnostic and should look like it. Expect past-paper questions rather than a lecture, questions about how the student revises and what they do when stuck, a look at the last two assessments, and a short plan for the next month with something the student completes before session two. A tutor who teaches for ninety minutes without finding out what is broken is a tutor you will be re-matching in October.

Then hold the slot, because that is the part only you control. The families who get the most from home tuition in Mumbai protect one evening a week from everything else, keep a desk clear of other people's laptops, and tell the tutor about a test ten days out rather than the night before. A home tutor for all IB and IGCSE subjects in Mumbai can be found in most zones; a family who keeps the slot is what makes the match last until the examination series.

  • Bring the last report card and the subject outline or IA brief
  • Agree rate, session length, frequency and payment timing in writing
  • Settle the missed-session policy before a session is ever missed
  • Expect a diagnostic first session, not a ninety-minute lecture
  • Protect one evening a week and flag tests ten days early
FAQs

Mumbai tutoring — questions parents ask

Why does IB Gram not publish a fee list for Mumbai?+

Because IB Gram fees in Mumbai are quoted by the tutor after the request exists, and before that the variables that set a rate do not. The board, the programme, the level, how scarce the subject is, the session length, the frequency and the evening a tutor gives up to reach your building all move the figure, and none of them is known until you have named the subject, the year, the area and the slot. One published number would mislead an MYP family in one direction and a DP2 Physics Higher Level family in the other. You get a written rate with the shortlist, before anything is booked.

What makes one tutor's rate higher than another's for the same subject?+

Scarcity, examiner-level experience and travel, in that order. Two tutors listed for Diploma Programme Chemistry can be priced differently because one has marked the Internal Assessment against the criteria while the other has only taught the content, and because one lives in Chembur while the other crosses the Eastern Express Highway in the evening peak. Session length and frequency shift the per-session figure as well. Ask each shortlisted tutor to state the rate, the session length it covers and the travel assumption behind it, and the gap between two quotes usually explains itself in a sentence.

Does a tutor charge extra for travelling to our building in the evening?+

Usually it is built into the quote rather than added as a separate line. A tutor prices the whole block your session consumes, so a six o'clock slot in Powai or off Ghodbunder Road that eats an evening is quoted above a nine-minute walk in Khar West. What helps is making the travel predictable: give the exact building and wing, the gate the tutor should use, whether a visitor pass takes ten minutes to issue and whether parking exists at all. A tutor who is not surprised on arrival will not ask to renegotiate in week three.

We live off Ghodbunder Road in Thane. Does a tutor's travel change what we pay?+

Yes, and the honest fix is matching locally rather than paying for a longer drive. The Ghodbunder Road stretch out to Kasarvadavali and Hiranandani Estate can take three times as long after six as it does at noon, so a tutor living near Thane station prices a Kasarvadavali evening above a Majiwada one. Families there generally do better with a Thane-based tutor for weekly home classes, keeping an online specialist for a scarce subject such as Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level. A tutor brought from Mulund twice a week rarely survives a full term.

Can two siblings share a session, and what does that do to the fee?+

Yes, if they are in the same subject at the same level, and it is the one genuine saving available. Two siblings sitting IGCSE Physics together share the evening, the journey and the explanation, and tutors price that as one job with a modest uplift rather than as two bookings. Two children in different programmes, or the same subject two years apart, is two jobs: the tutor teaches twice and should be paid twice, and compressing both into one session short-changes the younger one. Ask for the pair rate explicitly so it is written down from the start.

What should we agree with a tutor before the first home class?+

Six things: the rate and the session length it covers, the number of sessions a week, when payment happens, how much notice a cancellation needs and who absorbs a late one, what happens in school holidays and the Diwali break, and what happens if you change tutors mid-term. Put it in a message so both sides hold the same version. Most disputes families describe are not about the amount at all; they are about a missed session nobody had agreed a rule for, or a holiday month billed as a full one.

Is online cheaper than home tuition for DP Maths in Powai?+

Usually yes, because the travel load comes out of the quote. Powai has no railway station of its own, so a tutor arrives by road from Andheri East, Ghatkopar or Kanjurmarg along the JVLR, and that evening is what you pay for alongside the teaching. Online removes it and widens the pool to a Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches Higher Level specialist anywhere in the city. The trade-off is real: a DP1 student who works better with an adult in the room gets less from a screen, so many Powai families settle on one home class a week with online clinics before tests.

What happens to the fee if we miss a session during exam week?+

Whatever you agreed in advance, which is exactly why agreeing it matters. The common arrangements are that a session cancelled with a day's notice is rescheduled at no cost, a same-day cancellation is charged because the tutor has already lost the evening, and a tutor cancellation is always rescheduled. Decide which applies before session one. In the January mock weeks, ask the tutor to hold a flexible second slot rather than cancelling the first, because a rescheduled session inside a crowded fortnight often turns into no session at all.

Do fees rise closer to the May examination session?+

Rates are not raised by IB Gram, but availability collapses, which has much the same effect on what a family ends up paying. By January a strong Higher Level tutor has a full week, and the slots still open are the awkward ones carrying a longer drive. Families who book a standing slot in June or July are negotiating a rate; families who ask in February are negotiating an evening. If you already know your child will need Physics or Mathematics support in Diploma Programme year two, the cheapest decision available is an early one.

If the tutor is not working out after three weeks, do we pay again to re-match?+

No. Re-matching carries no additional matching charge, and you owe only the sessions already taught. Tell us what is not working in specific terms: the pace, the fit with the syllabus, a tutor who explains well but never sets written work. That detail is what makes the second match better than the first, because the problem is usually a teaching-style mismatch rather than a competence one. Expect a replacement shortlist within a few days, and expect the new tutor to spend one session establishing where the student actually is.

Does a parent need to be at home during a home tuition session in a Mumbai society?+

Not for the whole session, but someone should be in the flat, and most Mumbai societies require a resident to confirm a visitor anyway. Register the tutor at the gate as a standing weekly visitor so the pass is not renegotiated every Tuesday; many complexes in Powai, Kharghar and Thane issue a recurring entry once a resident confirms the slot. Hold the session at the dining table or in a study room rather than a bedroom, keep the television off, and look in twice. Tutors report the same slot working better where an adult is present.

Find your Mumbai tutor

Send one message with the board, the subject, the year, your area and the two evenings you can hold. A coordinator reads it, contacts the tutors who cover that subject at that level and can actually reach you, and comes back with a short list of names, each with its own rate, session length and travel assumption attached. You meet one, you agree the terms in writing, and the first home class is diagnostic. Nothing is charged for the match.
