IB Gram Book Demo Class in Mumbai

An IB Gram book demo class in Mumbai is worth having only if you prepare for it, so this page covers the hour before the session rather than the hour itself. Bring the last marked script, the current coursework draft and three written questions, and a home tuition demo stops being a pleasant chat and starts being a diagnosis you can act on.

How does IB Gram turn a demo request into a matched tutor in Mumbai?

A demo request becomes a scheduled session in five steps: you send the board, the year group, the subject and the locality; IB Gram shortlists tutors who already teach that syllabus in that part of the city; one tutor and one slot are confirmed by name; the tutor asks you for the student's recent marked work; and the session then runs with that work already on the table. The shortlist step is where the usefulness comes from, and the material step is where the hour stops being a sales call.

1. Send the specifics in one message: board and programme, the exact year group, the subject with its level, your locality and the two weekday evening windows that genuinely work every week in your household. 2. Read the shortlist. Each tutor comes with the syllabus they actually teach and the travel radius they will hold to for a standing weekly slot. 3. Confirm one tutor and one slot, then send ahead the last marked script, the current coursework draft and the three things the student is stuck on. 4. Hold the session at the agreed time, with the material out, the table clear and the room quiet. 5. Write down your decision within two days, while you still remember what the hour showed rather than how it felt.

Most families who book an IB Gram book demo class in Mumbai send three lines and expect the rest to be worked out on the doorstep. Help with Maths, Grade 10, Andheri is not a brief. Which board, which tier, which paper, which teacher comment keeps repeating on the scripts: those five answers are what let a coordinator separate a tutor who teaches International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) Mathematics 0580 Extended from one who teaches Diploma Programme (DP) Mathematics Applications and Interpretation. The two people are not interchangeable and a demo cannot fix the mismatch once the tutor is at your gate.

What a tutor does with pre-sent material is the whole argument for sending it. Give a tutor a Chemistry Internal Assessment draft from a DP1 student in Chembur on Friday and by Monday evening they arrive knowing the design criterion is the weak one, that the research question is still too broad and that the student has never been shown what a controlled variable table should look like. Give the same tutor nothing and the first forty minutes go to finding out what you already knew. The matching work is only half the job; the preparation is the half families control, and it is the one that decides whether a first session of home tuition tells you anything.

  • Send board, year, subject, level and locality in your first message
  • Name two evening windows that work every week, not only this week
  • Attach the most recent marked script before the slot is confirmed
  • Write three stuck points in the student's own words, not yours
  • Ask each shortlisted tutor to state their travel radius in writing
  • Confirm the building name, tower and flat number, not just the area

Pin down the programme and level before the demo, not during it

The most common waste in a first session is its first twenty minutes. A tutor who arrives in Bandra West without knowing whether the student sits Middle Years Programme (MYP) 5 or IGCSE Year 10 spends that time establishing it, out loud, with a fourteen-year-old who is not sure either. Write the programme down once in plain words, send it ahead, and the hour starts at the actual problem instead of at the admin.

The ladder a Mumbai family is somewhere on: the Primary Years Programme (PYP) through the early years, where there are no exams and the demo is really about reading, number sense and written expression; the MYP from roughly Year 6 to Year 10, assessed against four criteria per subject and reported on a one to eight scale that parents consistently misread as a percentage; and the two-year Diploma Programme from Year 11, with three Higher Level (HL) and three Standard Level (SL) subjects plus the core of Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the Extended Essay (EE) and Creativity, Activity, Service. On the Cambridge side, IGCSE papers come from Cambridge International Education or from Pearson Edexcel, and the syllabus code on the front of the past paper settles arguments faster than the school's name does.

Core and Extended in IGCSE Mathematics, and HL against SL in the Diploma, are the two decisions that most often bring a family to a demo without anyone saying so. A parent books a session about marks and what they actually need is somebody to look at a predicted grade sheet, a university subject requirement and the school's option blocks together. If that is your real question, say so when you request the session and bring those three documents. A tutor asked to diagnose Maths will diagnose Maths. A tutor told the family is deciding between Analysis and Approaches HL and Applications and Interpretation SL before the option deadline will use the hour completely differently.

Year-group labels differ across Mumbai schools, which is why the demo brief should carry both. Grade 9 and MYP 4 are the same children. Year 11 at one school is the first IGCSE examination year and the first Diploma year at another. Write it as the school writes it and then translate: Grade 11, DP1, May 2027 session. Three commas of effort removes an entire category of confusion from the first ten minutes.

  • Write the programme, year group and examination session in one line
  • Photograph the syllabus code on the front of a past paper
  • Bring the option block sheet if subject choice is the real question
  • State whether the board is Cambridge International Education or Pearson Edexcel
  • Note which MYP criteria the school reported lowest last term
  • Say if the student is repeating a year or joined mid-programme

Which subject papers and criteria should the student put on the table?

Put out three things per subject: the most recent marked paper with the teacher comments still on it, the official criteria sheet or mark scheme for that paper, and the current Internal Assessment (IA) draft at whatever stage it has reached. Those three turn a conversation into a diagnosis. Everything else in the folder can stay in the folder.

For Mathematics, the paper structure decides what is worth showing. Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation both run a non-calculator Paper 1 and a calculator Paper 2, with an extra extended-response Paper 3 at Higher Level, and the marks a Mumbai student loses are rarely evenly spread: it is the unseen structured question, or the graphical display calculator work that was never taught properly, or method marks thrown away by writing no working. Bring the last unit test rather than the best one of the year. For the IGCSE Extended tier, Papers 2 and 4 of 0580 reward exactly the working-out habits that a demo can see in ten minutes if the script is in front of the tutor.

In the sciences, Physics, Chemistry and Biology share a shape: a multiple-choice Paper 1, a structured and data-analysis Paper 2, and the scientific investigation marked against criteria that most students have never read in full. The IGCSE 0625 alternative-to-practical paper is its own skill and its own pile of lost marks. For English A Language and Literature, bring the Paper 1 guided textual analysis with the comment about unsupported assertion on it, because that comment is the lesson. Economics at Higher Level carries the policy-focused Paper 3; Business Management carries a research project that lives or dies on its tools. Name the component, not the subject, and the tutor can prepare.

Coursework comes as it is. A TOK essay that is a prompt and one unconvincing paragraph, an EE that is a title and a reading list, an IA with a method and no data: all three are more useful to a tutor than a tidy final draft, because the hour can be spent on the decision the student is stuck at. The students who get least from a first session are the ones whose parents said bring nothing, we will see what he needs. He needs the thing he is avoiding, and the thing he is avoiding is in his bag.

  • One marked script per subject, comments and crossings-out intact
  • The printed criteria sheet or mark scheme for that exact component
  • The IA, EE or TOK draft at its real stage, however thin
  • A list of topics the school has already taught this term
  • The graphical display calculator, charged, for any Maths session
  • Past paper and session details, such as 0580 Paper 4, May 2025

Mumbai home tuition zones and the first visit, from the gate to the table

Coverage across Mumbai, Maharashtra is organised by zone because travel, not talent, decides whether a weekly slot survives a full term. In South Mumbai, families in Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Walkeshwar, Babulnath, Peddar Road, Worli and Fort are matched within the island, since a tutor crossing from Worli to Colaba covers a short distance and still loses most of an hour to the Peddar Road and Haji Ali signals at seven in the evening. The Churchgate to Mumbai Central stretch of the Western Line, the Harbour Line out of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Metro Line 3 from Cuffe Parade towards Bandra Kurla Complex and the Coastal Road are the routes that make or break a SoBo slot. In the Western Suburbs, Bandra West, Khar West, Santacruz West, Juhu, Andheri West, Versova, Goregaon East, Malad, Kandivali East, Borivali and Dahisar East sit along the Western Express Highway, the Link Road, the Western Line and Metro Lines 1, 2A and 7, and matching along that spine works far better than matching across it.

The Central Suburbs run on the Central Line and the Eastern Express Highway, with Powai and Chandivali hanging off the Jogeshwari Vikhroli Link Road in between. Powai is the exception worth planning around: it is central and has no station of its own, so tutors reach Hiranandani Gardens and Chandivali by road from Andheri East, Kanjurmarg or Ghatkopar East, and a 6.30pm start there is a different proposition from a 5pm one. Kurla is tied to everything by the Santacruz Chembur Link Road. In the Eastern Suburbs, Chembur, Govandi, Vikhroli, Bhandup, Wadala and Mulund West are served by the Central and Harbour lines, and the Eastern Freeway brings South Mumbai tutors within reach of Chembur and Wadala far faster than the map suggests.

Navi Mumbai is planned in nodes, so Vashi, Nerul, Seawoods, Belapur, Kharghar, Airoli and Panvel are matched node to node along Palm Beach Road and the Sion Panvel Highway, with the Harbour and Trans-Harbour lines and the Belapur to Pendhar metro filling the gaps. The Atal Setu has made a Chembur or Wadala tutor plausible for a weekend Kharghar slot, though rarely for a Tuesday at six. Thane spreads west to east from the station across Pokhran Road, Majiwada, Hiranandani Estate, Vartak Nagar, Ghodbunder Road and Kasarvadavali, and the Ghodbunder stretch sets the whole schedule: twenty minutes off-peak, close to an hour in the evening peak. Thane tutors cover Thane, and a Mulund tutor crossing over is the exception, not the plan.

Then there is the part nobody plans and everybody complains about afterwards: the first visit. An IB Gram book demo class in Mumbai fails at the gate more often than it fails at the table. Register the tutor's name and phone number with the society office or on the building app the day before, not when they are standing outside in the rain. Tell the security desk which flat and which tower, because the watchman in a large Thane or Kharghar complex will not call up on trust. Clear a real table with a chair on each side, put a plug point within reach of a laptop, and take the television out of earshot. For an online demo, test the connection at the same hour on the previous day, since the hour that matters is the evening hour when everybody in the tower is streaming.

  • Register the tutor at the society gate a day before the slot
  • Give the tower and flat number, not only the building name
  • Keep the tutor's phone number on your phone, and share yours
  • A dining table and two chairs, not a bed and a cushion
  • Plug point within reach, overhead light on, television out of earshot
  • Test evening-hour connectivity before an online session, not during it

When in the Mumbai school year is a demo actually worth booking?

Book in the first three weeks of a term, or in the week a marked assessment comes back. The two worst moments are the week before a submission deadline and the first week of study leave, because in both the only honest advice a tutor can give is triage, and triage is not a diagnosis. A demo exists to show you how somebody thinks about the student's work, and it needs a little calendar space around it.

The Mumbai international school year opens in June and July, which is when subject choices, new programmes and the first wobble of the Diploma all land at once. September and October bring the first real summative assessments and the first MYP criteria grades that mean anything. November and December are the heaviest block: Extended Essay and Internal Assessment deadlines stack up, IGCSE October and November results arrive, and the Diwali break is both the only clear fortnight and the one most families waste. January and February belong to the DP2 mock examinations and the TOK essay, March and April to study leave and finishing, and the May session itself closes the year. A student whose Physics IA draft is due the same fortnight as her TOK essay does not need a demo that week; she needed one in August.

Families here work to calendars set by schools such as Dhirubhai Ambani International School in Bandra Kurla Complex, the American School of Bombay, Ascend International School, Ecole Mondiale World School and Jamnabai Narsee International School in Juhu, Oberoi International School on the Jogeshwari Vikhroli Link Road, Bombay International School at Babulnath, Cathedral and John Connon School in Fort, B.D. Somani International School in Cuffe Parade, Aditya Birla World Academy in Tardeo, Hiranandani Foundation School in Powai, NES International School in Mulund West, the JBCN International School campuses at Parel and Chembur, Thakur International School in Kandivali East, Singapore International School in Dahisar East, Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania School in Thane and D.Y. Patil International School in Nerul. IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with any of these schools, with the International Baccalaureate organisation or with Cambridge International Education. Naming them here is calendar context and nothing more.

Bring the deadline calendar to the demo as a piece of paper, not as a memory. Two months of dates, with the submission days circled, changes what a tutor says in the last ten minutes of the hour: they will tell you which of the three stuck points can wait until December and which one has to move this week. That is the most valuable sentence a first session produces, and it is impossible to say without the calendar on the table.

  • Book early in a term or in the week a script comes back
  • Avoid the week before a submission and the start of study leave
  • Bring two months of school deadlines on one printed page
  • Note the examination session, such as May 2027, in the brief
  • Diwali and the December break are the usable blocks, so plan them early
  • Flag any school internal deadline that sits ahead of the official one

Should the demo be a home class in Mumbai or an online session?

Choose a home class if the subject is handwriting-heavy or the student is younger than about fifteen, and choose an online session if the tutor whose subject expertise you want sits across the city. The two need different preparation. A home demo needs a gate pass, a table and a quiet hour. An online demo needs the marked script scanned and sent ahead, plus a camera angle that shows working, not a face.

Home tutoring is the lead service for a reason: an IB home tutor in Mumbai sitting at the same table can see the student's hand hesitate, can turn the script around and annotate it, and can tell within fifteen minutes whether the gap is knowledge, method or confidence. The honest trade-offs are travel and fragility. An IB home tuition slot in the Western Suburbs at 6pm competes with the Western Express Highway, a Thane slot competes with Ghodbunder Road, and monsoon weeks produce the cancellations that eventually end weekly arrangements. Travel distance also feeds directly into what you will be quoted, so a tutor matched three kilometres away is a more durable choice than a better-credentialled one matched across the creek.

An IB online tutor in Mumbai widens the pool to the person who actually teaches that HL option paper, and removes Peddar Road and the Sea Link from the equation entirely. The trade-offs are real: it is harder to read a reluctant fifteen-year-old through a screen, the student has to make their working visible rather than hiding it, and the Mumbai evening is when a tower's bandwidth is worst. Preparation is what closes most of that gap. Send a clear scan or photograph of the script the day before, set a second phone on a stand as a document camera pointing at the page, put the student at a table with the camera at eye level, and join the call five minutes early to find out that the microphone does not work before the hour starts rather than six minutes into it.

Hybrid is what most arrangements become by the second term, and the demo is a reasonable place to test it: one session at home each week for the subject that needs a shared page, one online for the subject that needs the specialist. Families booking all IB and IGCSE subjects in home classes across Mumbai usually find the mix settles by itself, with the handwriting-heavy work at the table and essay feedback done on a screen with a shared document. Decide the format of the demo on the basis of which question you are trying to answer, and say so when you book.

  • Home tuition at the table: gate pass, clear table, one quiet hour, phones away
  • Online demo: script scanned and sent ahead, second phone as a document camera
  • Test the link and the evening bandwidth on the previous day
  • Handwriting-heavy subjects read better at a shared table
  • Scarce HL option papers often mean the specialist is online
  • Pick the format that answers your question, not the easier one to arrange

What a good tutor asks you for before the demo, and what you should check

Before an IB Gram book demo class in Mumbai, a tutor worth keeping asks you for five things: the most recent marked script, the syllabus version and examination session, the stage the IA or EE has reached, what the school has actually covered this term, and what the student thinks is going wrong. A tutor who asks for nothing at all is a mild warning sign. It usually means one of two things: they intend to improvise the hour, or they teach the same first lesson to everybody and your child's script would not change it.

On IB Gram's side, verification is identity, qualification claims, subject and syllabus experience, teaching history and references, checked before a tutor appears on any shortlist. What no platform can verify is the part you are booking the demo to find out: whether this particular adult can hold the attention of this particular teenager in your dining room on a Wednesday evening. That is what the hour is for, and it is why the preparation matters more than the vetting paperwork.

Your own checks take about four minutes and are worth more than a résumé. Ask which syllabus version they teach and which papers they have marked or prepared students for. Ask them to read one criterion from the sheet you brought and say in plain words what the top band actually requires, because a tutor who paraphrases the criterion back at you without translating it has not used it much. Ask what they would do with the script in front of them over the next four weeks, specifically. And ask the practical question too: what do IB tuition fees in Mumbai depend on in their case, which should come back as board, level, subject scarcity, travel distance and session length, stated in writing rather than negotiated at the door.

Two housekeeping points that save arguments later. Have the tutor carry photo identification for the society gate, and keep every arrangement, slot, rate basis and cancellation rule in writing on the platform rather than in a verbal understanding at the end of a good first hour. Searching for the best IB tutor in Mumbai is the wrong frame anyway; what you want is the tutor who read your child's script before arriving and had something precise to say about it.

  • A tutor who requests nothing before the session has not prepared
  • Ask which syllabus version and which papers they have prepared students for
  • Have them translate one criterion band into plain English
  • Ask for a specific four-week plan for the script in front of them
  • Fee basis in writing: board, level, scarcity, travel, session length
  • Photo identification for the gate, and all arrangements kept on the platform

The hour before: a preparation checklist for an IB Gram book demo class in Mumbai

Five things on the table before the session starts: the most recent marked script with the teacher's comments still on it, the current IA or EE draft at whatever stage it has reached, the official criteria sheet for that piece of work, a written list of the three things the student is actually stuck on, and the school deadline calendar for the next two months. Nothing else. A folder containing everything from the year is as unhelpful as an empty table, because the tutor spends the hour sorting rather than teaching.

The phrase that costs families the most is we will see how it goes. It sounds open-minded and it hands the hour away. A tutor with no material in front of them improvises: a general chat about confidence, two textbook questions, a friendly summary at the door. You learn that the tutor is pleasant, which you could have learned on the phone. You do not learn whether they can read a comment on a Chemistry IA and tell a DP1 student exactly what the examiner wanted instead. The three stuck points are the step families skip and the step that changes the session most, and they have to be in the student's own words. I do not understand moles is a different problem from I can balance the equation but lose marks on significant figures, and only the second one can be fixed in the four weeks before a test.

Who should be in the room: the student and the tutor. One parent nearby for the first ten minutes and the last ten, and not for the fifty in between. The reason is practical rather than philosophical. A DP1 student in Andheri West will not say I have not started my Internal Assessment in front of a parent who believes it is half written, and a tutor who cannot get an honest answer in the first session will spend three weeks finding out what they could have known on day one. Siblings out of the room. Phones face down on the sideboard, including the parent's. If the doorbell is going to ring four times in that hour, tell the gate the slot is blocked. For an online demo, the student sits at a table with the camera on, not on a bed with the laptop balanced on their stomach and a parent narrating from the doorway.

The questions to ask when the hour ends are short and there are only three. What is the single biggest gap you saw today, in one sentence. What would the first four weeks look like, and what will you set for the student to do between sessions. What do you need from us, including the fee basis in writing and the slot you can actually hold through the term. The student gets one question of their own, and it is the most diagnostic question of the lot: can you show me how you would start the question I got wrong. If the tutor answers by explaining the answer rather than demonstrating the approach, write that down, because that is how every future session will go. Then write your own three lines within two days, while the hour is still fresh: what the tutor noticed, what the student could do at the end that they could not do at the start, and whether anybody said anything specific enough to be wrong about.

  • Marked script, coursework draft, criteria sheet, three stuck points, deadline calendar
  • Three stuck points written by the student, not translated by the parent
  • One parent for the first and last ten minutes, not the middle fifty
  • Siblings out, phones down, doorbell and television dealt with in advance
  • Parent asks three closing questions; the student asks one
  • Write your own three-line verdict within two days of the session

Judging the demo afterwards: liking a tutor is not learning from one

Two different questions come out of the same hour and families routinely answer only the first. Did my child like them. Did my child learn something in that hour. Liking matters, because a teenager who dreads Thursday at six will find a way to lose Thursday at six, but liking is not evidence. Evidence is narrow and easy to test: the student can do one thing at the end of the hour that they could not do at the start, and can tell you what it was without being prompted. If the answer is he was really nice and we talked about school, you have a rapport reading and no learning reading, and you should book a second conversation rather than a term.

A single session also has honest limits, and knowing them stops you over-reading it. One hour cannot tell you whether a tutor is consistent across eleven weeks, how they behave when the student plateaus in the fifth week, whether they will chase unfinished work or quietly let it go, whether they can run a timed paper under real pressure, or how they handle a bad mock result in January. It cannot tell you how the student will respond once the novelty wears off. Those things show up at four weeks and at a term, which is why the demo is a filter for the obviously wrong match rather than a verdict on the right one. A home tutor earns the judgement over a term, not over an hour.

What realistic progress looks like, said plainly: at four weeks you should see habit change, such as working shown, past paper questions attempted, drafts moving from nothing to something. At one term you should see the specific weaknesses in the marked scripts narrowing and a teacher comment that no longer repeats itself. Across a full examination cycle you should see the student's own judgement of their work improve, because that is what carries into the examination hall when nobody is sitting beside them. IB Gram does not guarantee grades, and no tutor who has read a syllabus honestly will promise one either. Outcomes depend on the student's work between sessions, the school's teaching and how early the support started.

How to say no gracefully, because most families handle this badly by doing nothing. Send one short message within two days. Thank the tutor for the session, say the fit is not right for your child, and stop there. No reasons are owed and a half-explained reason invites a negotiation you do not want. Do not go silent: the subject-specific tutor pool in any one Mumbai zone is not large, you may want this person for a different child or a different year, and the coordinator matching your replacement will work faster with a clear no than with a maybe. If the problem was the subject rather than the person, say that instead, and ask for a different tutor on the same syllabus.

  • Separate did my child like them from did my child learn something
  • Test: one thing the student can now do and can name unprompted
  • A demo cannot show consistency, plateau behaviour or exam-day nerves
  • Four weeks for habits, one term for narrowing weaknesses, one cycle for judgement
  • Say no in one short message within two days, with no reasons owed
  • If the subject was the mismatch, ask for a different tutor on the same syllabus

Booking an IB home tuition demo in Mumbai: what happens next?

After you send a query, a coordinator comes back with questions before tutors: board, programme, year group, subject and level, your locality and the evening windows that work. Then a shortlist of tutors who teach that syllabus in your zone, each with a stated travel radius. You pick one, a slot is confirmed by name, and the tutor contacts you for the student's recent work before the session rather than after it. Nobody turns up at your gate unannounced, and nothing is confirmed by a phone call you did not expect.

Your side of the twenty-four hours before: put the marked script, the coursework draft and the criteria sheet in one place, get the three stuck points written down by the student, print two months of school deadlines, register the tutor at the society gate, and clear a table. If the session is online, send the scan ahead and test the link at the same hour the day before. That is the whole preparation, and it takes less time than the arguing about it usually does.

The first ongoing session after a demo should look different from the demo itself. It starts from the gap the tutor named, it comes with work set for the week in between, and it ends with the student able to say what they are doing before the next session. A home tutor for all IB and IGCSE subjects Mumbai parents ask about will not exist as one person, so expect a different tutor per subject and a short written plan for each. Ask for both in the same message you use to confirm.

Then set a review point at four weeks and keep it, in the diary, with the marked scripts from that month in front of you. Families who book an IB private tutor Mumbai coordinators matched for them and never look at the scripts again are the ones still asking in February whether it is working. The scripts answer that question. Parents typing IB tutors near me in Mumbai are usually looking for proximity; proximity keeps the slot alive, but the scripts are what tell you the hour is doing something.

  • Coordinator asks for specifics before any tutor is proposed
  • Shortlist carries syllabus taught and travel radius, not slogans
  • Tutor requests the student's recent work before the session
  • Expect a separate tutor per subject and a short written plan for each
  • Diary a four-week review with that month's marked scripts in hand
FAQs

Mumbai tutoring — questions parents ask

What exactly should my child have ready before the demo starts?+

Five items, on the table, before the tutor sits down: the most recent marked script with the teacher's comments intact, the current IA or EE draft at whatever stage it is in, the printed criteria sheet for that piece of work, a written list of the three things the student is stuck on, and two months of school deadlines on one page. Not a folder of the whole year, which only gets sorted rather than used. The three stuck points should be in the student's own words, because the wording tells a tutor whether the problem is knowledge, method or confidence.

Is a demo worth booking if we have not chosen subjects yet?+

Yes, but brief it as a subject-choice session rather than a tuition session, or the hour goes to the wrong question. Bring the school's option block sheet, the latest predicted or reported grades, and any university or course requirement you already know about. A tutor who understands HL against SL in the Diploma, or Core against Extended in IGCSE Mathematics, can tell you what each path demands week to week, which is the information missing from most option-form conversations. Say in your request that the decision deadline is coming, and give the date.

Who should be in the room during a home demo, and who should not?+

The student and the tutor, with one parent nearby for the first ten minutes and the last ten only. The middle of the hour needs the student to admit things they will not admit in front of you, starting with how little of the Internal Assessment actually exists. Siblings should be out of the room, the television out of earshot and phones face down, including yours. If you have domestic staff arriving or a delivery expected, deal with it in advance. For an online demo, the same rules apply with one addition: the student sits at a table with the camera on, not on a bed. Home tuition only works if the room is treated as a classroom for that hour.

What should I ask the tutor at the end of the demo?+

Three questions, and keep them short. What is the single biggest gap you saw today, in one sentence. What would the first four weeks look like, and what will you set between sessions. What do you need from us, including the fee basis in writing and the weekly slot you can hold all term. Your child gets one question of their own: can you show me how you would start the question I got wrong. If the answer explains the answer instead of demonstrating the approach, that is how every session will go, so note it now rather than in week five.

How do we get the tutor into our society in Powai on a weekday evening?+

Register the tutor the day before, not at the gate. Most Hiranandani Gardens and Chandivali complexes run a visitor app or an office register, and the security desk will not call up for an unlisted name however polite the conversation is. Give the tower and flat number, keep the tutor's number on your phone and send them yours. Powai has no railway station of its own, so tutors arrive by road from Andheri East, Kanjurmarg or Ghatkopar East using the Jogeshwari Vikhroli Link Road, which means a 6.30pm start is far more reliable than a 5pm one.

Our building is off Ghodbunder Road in Thane. How should we schedule the first visit?+

Schedule it later than feels natural and match within Thane. The Ghodbunder Road stretch between the station and Kasarvadavali takes twenty minutes off-peak and close to an hour in the evening peak, so a tutor coming from Pokhran Road or Majiwada for a 6pm slot will either be late or will leave home absurdly early and resent it by week three. Pick a Thane-based tutor, agree a 7pm start, register the name at the gate the day before, and keep the first session on a weekday you can actually repeat every week.

Does an online demo tell us as much as a home demo?+

It tells you less about rapport and almost as much about subject thinking, provided you prepare for it. Send a clear scan of the marked script the day before so the tutor is not squinting at a webcam. Set a second phone on a stand pointing at the page so the student's working is visible. Put the student at a table with the camera at eye level, join five minutes early and test the microphone. The genuine limits are reading a reluctant teenager through a screen and Mumbai evening bandwidth in a full tower, which is why you test at the same hour the day before.

What do IB tuition fees in Mumbai depend on?+

Board and programme, the level, how scarce the subject is, how far the tutor travels and how long the session runs. A Higher Level option paper with few qualified teachers in your zone sits differently from a general MYP Mathematics requirement, and a tutor matched three kilometres away costs less in travel time than an equally good one across the creek. Ask for the basis in writing before you commit to a term, including what happens to a session you cancel late and a session the tutor cancels. Keep it on the platform rather than as a doorstep understanding.

What if the demo goes badly, or the tutor is simply not right?+

Say so within two days and ask for a different match on the same syllabus. One short message is enough and no reasons are owed, though if you can name the problem it makes the replacement faster: wrong level, too gentle with an avoidant student, strong on content and weak on the criteria. A coordinator can act on any of those. The thing that slows everything down is silence, because a maybe keeps a slot provisionally held and keeps the next tutor waiting. Nothing about a first session commits you to a term.

Can one session tell us whether our child will improve?+

No, and a tutor who says it can is telling you something useful about themselves. One hour can show whether somebody reads a mark scheme properly, explains a method rather than an answer, and can hold a teenager's attention at your table. It cannot show consistency over eleven weeks, how they handle a plateau in week five, whether they chase unfinished work, or what happens after a bad January mock. Those appear at four weeks and at one term. IB Gram does not guarantee grades, and outcomes depend heavily on what the student does between sessions.

How do I say no to a tutor after the demo without being rude?+

One message, within two days, thanking them and saying the fit is not right for your child. Stop there. Giving a half-reason invites a negotiation and a counter-offer you did not want, and going silent is worse than either, because the tutor keeps your slot provisionally free. The subject-specific pool in any single Mumbai zone is not large, so you may want this person for a different child or a different year. A clear no also lets the coordinator start the replacement the same day rather than at the end of the week.

What happens if we miss the demo slot or need to reschedule?+

Message as early as you can and offer two alternative windows rather than asking the tutor to propose them. A tutor who has already left Santacruz West for a Borivali slot in monsoon traffic has lost the evening, and that is how a promising match quietly ends before it starts. Reschedules are routine when they come with notice; same-hour cancellations are the thing that makes tutors deprioritise a family. If the student is unwell, say so plainly and move the session rather than running an hour nobody can use.

Find your Mumbai tutor

Send one message with the board, the year group, the subject and level, your locality and the two evening windows that work every week. A coordinator comes back with a shortlist of tutors who teach that syllabus in your zone, with travel radius stated. You confirm one tutor and one slot; the tutor then asks you for the student's recent marked work before the session. Spend the hour before getting those five items onto a cleared table, and the demo will actually be worth having.
