Before you hire an IB tutor in Mumbai, work out which problem you actually have. Missed content, lost technique marks, colliding deadlines, a disengaged teenager and a wrong-school fit look identical on a report card and need five different responses. Two of them are not solved by home tuition at all. This page helps you tell them apart.

Most enquiries arrive as one sentence: my daughter is in DP1 at a school in Bandra West and her Chemistry has gone from a 6 to a 4. That sentence is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The first thing we ask for is the last marked paper, or the last report with the subject teacher's comments on it, because what the marker wrote in the margin tells us far more than the grade does. A script with short, unfinished answers and whole questions left blank is a content problem. A script where the chemistry is right, the working is right, and the marks still go missing is a technique problem. Those two need different tutors, and sending the wrong one costs a term.
The order of the process matters more than its speed. 1. You send the year, the board, the subject and the one thing that changed, with the marked paper if you have it. 2. We read the paper and tell you which of the five common problems it looks like, including the cases where the answer is not a tutor. 3. We shortlist people who have taught that subject at that level, filtered first by whether they can actually reach your building on the evening you want. 4. You speak to one or two of them yourself before anything is booked. 5. The first session is a diagnostic hour that ends with the tutor writing down what they found, in enough detail that you could hand the note to the school.
Travel is a filter, not an afterthought. A tutor living in Juhu can promise a seven o'clock Tuesday slot in Chembur and mean it in week one; by week six the Santacruz–Chembur Link Road has quietly ended that arrangement, and the family is the one apologising. We match inside a corridor wherever the subject allows it, and we say plainly when a scarce subject such as Further Mathematics, Design Technology or a second language means a longer journey, a weekend slot or online sessions instead.
We also turn requests down, which is the part of this that no advertisement describes. If a parent describes a child who has stopped opening books at all, or a student who is in the wrong board rather than behind in it, a weekly tutor is not the first move. Saying that loses us the booking and saves the family four months, and it is the only version of this service worth running.
Work backwards from the assessment the student is sitting this year. In the Middle Years Programme (MYP) a falling grade is usually a criterion problem. In International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) Years 10 and 11 it is more often a content gap, because those papers reward recall and clean method. In the Diploma Programme (DP) it is most often workload. The same two-grade drop therefore means three different things.
The International Baccalaureate (IB) runs the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the MYP and the DP, and many Mumbai schools pair an IGCSE pathway in Years 9 to 11 with the IB DP in Years 11 and 12, so one child can live through two boards in five years. MYP sciences are marked against four criteria: knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. A student who can recite the content and cannot plan a fair test scores just as badly as one who knows nothing, and only the criterion breakdown shows which it is. In PYP and the lower MYP years, what gets described as weakness in a subject is frequently reading stamina, and a subject tutor will spend a term treating the wrong thing.
The Core and Extended decision in IGCSE Mathematics, the sciences and some languages produces more avoidable tutoring than any other single choice. A student placed on Extended because the family wanted the higher ceiling, who then loses marks on every multi-step question, has a placement problem that a tutor can only partly carry. A student sitting Core who needs Extended to take a DP Higher Level subject has a genuine content gap with a fixed deadline attached, and that one is exactly what tutoring is for. Cambridge International Education and Pearson Edexcel both publish the tier descriptions; the school's subject teacher can tell you in one email which tier the student is actually on.
At DP the Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL) fork does the same job. HL adds topics, longer papers and more depth, and the honest test of whether an HL subject is wrong is not the grade but how many hours a week it eats out of the other five. Add the DP core, Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the Extended Essay (EE) and Creativity, Activity, Service, and you have the workload diagnosis rather than the knowledge one.
Mathematics is where the two gaps separate most cleanly. In Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, a content gap shows as a blank page or an abandoned part (b). A technique gap shows as a correct final answer with no method lines, a correct method with no units, an exact answer where the paper asked for three significant figures, or a graphical question solved by hand when the paper expected the calculator. The second student is often stronger at mathematics than the first and scores lower, which is why the grade alone sends families to the wrong tutor.
The DP sciences put the same split inside one piece of coursework. A Physics, Chemistry or Biology Internal Assessment (IA) is marked on research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, and the marks most commonly lost are in evaluation, where students list limitations instead of explaining what each limitation did to the result. No amount of extra physics content fixes that; it is a writing and reasoning job, and it is learnable in a handful of sessions. IGCSE science papers lose marks somewhere else entirely, usually on command words: a question that says state does not want a paragraph, and a question that says explain does not accept a label.
Humanities and languages are almost entirely presentation. A History Paper 2 answer that narrates two case studies without comparing them has the knowledge and not the structure. An Economics commentary without a correctly labelled diagram and a real-world link has done the economics and left the marks on the table. English Language and Literature Paper 1 is a guided analysis of an unseen text, and the standard failure is quotation without comment: the evidence is on the page and nobody said what it does. If your child can talk fluently about the novel and writes fours, you are looking at technique.
Subject choice across both boards is part of the diagnosis rather than a separate conversation. Few families need all IB and IGCSE subjects from one tutor in Mumbai; most need one subject diagnosed properly, one internal assessment unblocked, and the rest left alone. Each subject carries its own coursework with its own internal school deadline, so a second tutor added in November is usually a workload decision disguised as an academic one.
Mumbai, Maharashtra is not one tutoring market but six, and the zone decides which diagnoses you can realistically treat on a weekday evening. South Mumbai is short distances and slow movement: Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Walkeshwar, Peddar Road, Tardeo and Fort sit minutes apart on a map and forty minutes apart at seven in the evening, so tutors here are matched inside the island rather than brought down the Western Line from the suburbs. The Coastal Road and the Bandra–Worli Sea Link changed the Worli to Bandra West run far more than they changed anything between Haji Ali and Churchgate, and Metro Line 3 has started to make a BKC tutor viable in Cuffe Parade.
The Western Suburbs run north and south along the Western Line and the Western Express Highway, which means matching along the line works and matching across it does not. Bandra West to Khar West to Santacruz West is one market; Juhu and Andheri West is another; Goregaon East, Malad, Kandivali, Borivali and Dahisar form a third, now stitched together by Metro Lines 2A and 7 and by Link Road for anyone willing to drive. The practical meaning of searching for an IB home tutor in Mumbai is therefore a question about your corridor before it is a question about the tutor.
The Central Suburbs sit on the Central Line and the Eastern Express Highway, with Powai and Chandivali hanging off JVLR in between. Powai has no station of its own, so tutors arrive by road from Andheri East, Ghatkopar or Kanjurmarg, and a monsoon evening on JVLR can take a session off the calendar. The Eastern Suburbs run from Chembur and Govandi through Vikhroli and Bhandup to Mulund on the Central and Harbour lines, and the Eastern Freeway puts Fort closer to Chembur and Wadala than the map suggests, which occasionally makes a South Mumbai specialist workable for a weekend slot.
Navi Mumbai works node to node: Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar and Panvel are short drives apart on Palm Beach Road and the Sion–Panvel Highway, with the Harbour and Trans-Harbour lines and the Belapur to Pendhar metro in support. The Atal Setu has shortened the island crossing, but pulling a tutor over it for a weekday evening lesson rarely holds for a full term. Thane spreads from the station east along Pokhran Road, Majiwada and Ghodbunder Road to Kasarvadavali and Hiranandani Estate, and the Ghodbunder stretch sets the timetable more than any tutor's preference does.
The calendar is predictable enough to plan around. Most Mumbai international schools open the academic year in the first half of the calendar year, the DP cohort works towards the May examination session, and IGCSE candidates sit either the May and June or the October and November series. Content gaps surface in the first set of unit tests, within about six weeks of a new year starting. Technique gaps hide all year and appear in mock examinations, because classwork is forgiving and a mark scheme is not. The IA, EE and TOK collision lands in the stretch of months before mocks, when three pieces of coursework have school deadlines set earlier than the board's.
Disengagement has its own season. It shows up after a long break, most often the Diwali weeks or the gap after mocks, when a student who was coping on momentum stops and nobody can tell whether it is tiredness, something social, or a subject they have privately given up on. School-fit problems appear in the first term after a change: a new school, a new board, or a move from IGCSE into the DP where the same student is suddenly asked to write rather than to recall. If you know which month you are in, you already have a shortlist of two or three likely diagnoses.
Families we work with attend schools including Dhirubhai Ambani International School and the American School of Bombay in Bandra Kurla Complex, Ecole Mondiale World School and Jamnabai Narsee International School in Juhu, Oberoi International School off JVLR in Goregaon East, Hiranandani Foundation School in Powai, Cathedral and John Connon School in Fort, B.D. Somani International School in Cuffe Parade, Bombay International School at Babulnath, Aditya Birla World Academy in Tardeo, NES International School in Mulund West, JBCN International School in Chembur and Parel, Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania School in Thane and D.Y. Patil International School in Nerul. Each sets internal deadlines inside the board's external ones, which is why two DP2 students in the same tower can have entirely different pressure weeks. IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with any of these schools or with any examination board.
Before hiring anyone, send the subject teacher two questions by email: which criterion or question type is costing the marks, and is the student's level or tier placement right. Teachers answer this more often than parents expect, and the reply frequently removes the need for a tutor or changes which tutor you need. It also gives the tutor a starting point that is not guesswork.
Match the mode to the diagnosis. A content gap is the one that most needs IB home tuition in Mumbai, because a tutor at the table can watch the student work, stop them mid-error and go back three chapters without asking permission. A technique gap often runs better online, where a marked paper and a mark scheme sit side by side on a shared screen. A workload collision needs neither in the first week; it needs a calendar.
Home tutoring is the lead option here for an unglamorous reason: it is the only mode where an adult sees the page rather than the face. In a home session the tutor notices that the student skips the diagram, writes the answer before the method, or reaches for the calculator at the first fraction. The trade-offs are real. Travel time is priced into every home slot, monsoon evenings cancel some of them, and the session is only as good as the table it happens on. Home classes are also the mode a parent can overhear from the next room, which turns out to matter more than most families expect.
An IB online tutor in Mumbai removes travel from the equation and widens the pool for scarce subjects, which is often the only way a Panvel or Kasarvadavali family reaches a specialist in a minority language or an HL option taught at few schools. Online is strongest for IA and EE drafting, where the document is the lesson, and for paper practice with a mark scheme on screen. It is weakest exactly where you need it most with a disengaged student: a camera shows a face, not a page of working, and a teenager who has stopped caring can sit through an hour of it untouched.
Hybrid is where most DP families end up. No one teaches all IB and IGCSE subjects in home classes across Mumbai, so a sensible week mixes modes: a home session for the subject with the real gap, an online session for coursework drafting, and nothing at all for the subjects that are fine. Decide the mix from the diagnosis rather than from the timetable, and review it after mocks when the pressure points move.
Every tutor is checked on identity, qualification and teaching history for the specific board, subject and level before they reach a shortlist, and we ask them to mark a sample script so we can see whether they can explain a lost mark rather than simply find one. A parent searching IB tutors near me in Mumbai gets that filter applied before the first phone call, instead of a directory to sort through alone.
What we record is deliberately narrow: government photo identity, the degree or teaching qualification claimed, which syllabus iterations they have actually taught, how many years they have worked with this board at this level, references from families they have taught, and whether they are willing to write a short note after each session. We do not record anything we cannot check, and we do not describe a tutor as a specialist in a subject they have taught once. A tutor who has taught MYP sciences is not automatically the right person for a DP Physics HL paper 3, and the reverse is just as true.
Then do your own checking, because it takes ten minutes and tells you more than any profile. On the first call, hand the tutor the marked paper and ask one question: which gap does this show. A good answer names the questions, the criterion or the command word, and says what the first three sessions would do about it. A weak answer talks about building confidence and revising the syllabus from the start. Ask what they will not do, too, and ask how they expect you to hear about progress. Anyone who responds by promising a grade jump has told you something useful: no tutor can guarantee a grade, in Mumbai or anywhere else.
An IB private tutor in Mumbai found through a building group or a neighbour may be excellent, and plenty are. The difference is that the checking, the replacement and the awkward conversation when it is not working are all yours to run. That is a fair trade for some families and a bad one for others, and it is worth deciding deliberately rather than by default.
Three tests, in order, and none of them involves the grade. First, read the returned paper question by question and mark where the marks actually went missing. Second, ask the student to explain their own answer out loud, without looking at it. Third, sort the lost marks into two piles: marks lost on knowledge, and marks lost on the presentation of knowledge. The second pile is the one families consistently misread as laziness.
The returned paper is the only honest document in the house. A 4 built from two untouched questions is a different animal from a 4 built from every answer scoring roughly half, and they need opposite responses: the first needs content taught, the second needs a mark scheme read. The explain-it-back test takes about four minutes. If the student explains the method fluently while the paper in your hand shows it wrong, you have technique, timing or reading-the-question. If they cannot explain an answer they got right, they have memorised a worked solution, which is a content gap wearing a disguise and the most expensive one to leave alone.
From there the five diagnoses sort themselves. A content gap wants a weekly tutor who is willing to go backwards before going forwards. A technique gap wants a tutor for a short, sharp run of past papers and mark schemes, and sometimes the school teacher will do that for free if asked directly. A workload collision wants a calendar, a written order of deadlines and perhaps one session on the single piece of coursework that is blocking the rest. Disengagement wants a conversation, and possibly someone who is not a parent and not a teacher. A school-fit problem wants a meeting with the school about level, tier, subject or board. This is where the search for the best IB tutor in Mumbai goes wrong: two of the five problems do not improve with the finest teacher in the city, because the obstacle was never instruction.
Be blunt with yourself about those two. For a disengaged student, adding a tutor adds a third adult inspecting their work, and the first month commonly gets worse: resistance, cancelled sessions, homework done for the tutor rather than for the subject. It can still be the right move, but only if someone has first asked the student what they want, and only if the tutor is chosen for temperament as much as for subject knowledge. For a school-fit problem, weekly tutoring postpones a decision that gets more expensive every term it waits. So before you book an IB tutor in Mumbai, spend one evening on the three tests. You will either know precisely which tutor to ask for, or discover that the problem belongs to the timetable, the school or the student, and save yourself a term of paying for the wrong fix.
At four weeks you are not looking for a grade, and any report that shows one is probably noise. What should change is method. The student attempts the whole paper instead of stopping two-thirds through. Method lines appear in the working. The IA has a research question instead of a topic. Questions asked at the dinner table get sharper and more specific. If nothing in the method has moved after four weeks of weekly sessions, the honest reading is that the match is wrong, not that the child is slow, and the right response is a replacement rather than more of the same.
At one term the mark pattern on school assessments should move, which is not the same as the grade moving. The useful question is whether the lost-mark pile has shifted: a student who was losing marks on knowledge and is now losing them on presentation has made real progress even if the grade is identical, because the remaining fix is faster and cheaper. Teacher comments are the second source here. Comments that change from vague encouragement to specific technical notes are a signal that the work in front of the teacher has changed.
At one exam cycle, mocks to final papers, you find out what the whole thing was worth. IB Gram does not guarantee grades, and anyone who offers to should be asked how exactly they plan to sit the paper. Too much sits outside a tutor's reach: the student's own effort in the weeks nobody is watching, illness in April, a paper that leans on the one topic they liked least, and the simple fact that a grade compares your child against a global cohort rather than against last term.
The two diagnoses that look worse before better deserve a last warning. A parent who hires a home tutor for all IB and IGCSE subjects in Mumbai in response to one bad report usually ends up with a quieter house, a fuller calendar and the same mark pattern a term later. Tutoring treats content and technique well, workload partially, and motivation and placement badly. Knowing which of those you bought is the difference between a useful term and an expensive one.
Four things make the first hour useful instead of introductory: the last two marked papers, the most recent report with teacher comments, the subject guide or syllabus the school is working from, and any coursework brief with your school's internal deadline written on it. Add the student's week on one page, including school finish times, sport, music and the evening they are already too tired to learn. A tutor who sees that page will propose a different slot from the one you had in mind, and will usually be right.
The first session is a diagnosis, so expect questions and a short piece of written work rather than teaching from page one. By the end you should have a plain statement of which gap the tutor found, what the next three sessions will cover, what they will deliberately leave alone, and how you will hear about progress. If the first session ends with nothing written down, ask for it before booking a second. The student should also be asked what they think the problem is; they are frequently more accurate than the report card.
The practical details matter as much as the pedagogy. Clear the visitor or gate pass for a standing weekly slot before the first evening rather than at the gate on the night. Pick a table that is not the dining table during dinner, out of earshot of a television and in a room with a plug for a laptop. Keep a parent in the house for the first session. Agree what happens to a session missed because of traffic, exams or illness, and agree it before it happens rather than after.
Not until someone has read the paper that produced the 4. A drop caused by two untouched questions is a content gap and responds well to weekly teaching. A drop spread evenly across every answer is usually technique: command words, method lines, structure, timing. A drop in a term with three coursework deadlines is workload, and a drop that arrives with a shrug and no homework is motivation. Each of those needs a different response, and two of them do not need a tutor at all.
Sort the lost marks into two piles and ask your child to explain one correct answer out loud. If they explain the method fluently and the paper still lost marks, the knowledge is there and the presentation of it is not, which is a technique gap. If they cannot explain an answer that was marked right, they memorised a worked solution and the content underneath is missing. Ten minutes at the kitchen table separates the two more reliably than a grade ever will.
Usually not as the first step. An IB tutor in Mumbai added to the week of a student who has disengaged becomes a third adult checking their work, and the first month often gets worse before anything improves: cancelled sessions, resistance, homework done to satisfy the tutor. Start with a conversation about what changed, involve the school's counsellor if there is one, and only then look for a tutor chosen for temperament as much as for subject knowledge. We will say this on the call too.
It decides whether the slot still exists in week six. Home tuition at seven in the evening is a different proposition depending on whether the tutor crosses the Western Express Highway, the Santacruz–Chembur Link Road or the Ghodbunder Road stretch to reach you. We match inside corridors for that reason, and we would rather offer you a tutor from Chembur for a Chembur slot than a more impressive profile from Juhu who will start rescheduling by the second month.
Clear it once, as a standing weekly entry, before the first session. Most Mumbai societies will register a recurring visitor for a fixed day and time if a resident requests it in writing at the office, and that is far less friction than a fresh approval every week at the gate. Tell us at the shortlist stage if your building needs identity details, a photograph or a resident's app approval in advance, and the tutor will send what is required before the first evening.
For the first session, yes, and after that it is your judgement. Being in the house for the diagnosis means you hear what the tutor found instead of receiving a summary of it, and it sets the expectation that sessions are observable. After that, many families are present for the first and last ten minutes only. Keep the session in a shared room rather than behind a closed door, which is standard practice for home classes and better for everyone involved.
Five things, roughly in this order: the board and level, how scarce the subject is, travel distance, session length, and whether the work is ongoing teaching or a short coursework rescue. IB tuition fees in Mumbai are not one number, which is why we do not publish a price list: MYP Mathematics and a DP HL option paper are different jobs, and a tutor crossing two zones on a weekday evening prices the traffic in. Ask for the rate and the travel assumption together.
It is better than home classes for some jobs and worse for others. Online is strong for technique work, where the marked paper and the mark scheme can sit on a shared screen, and for IA or Extended Essay drafting, where the document is the lesson. It is weaker for watching a student work, because a camera shows a face and not a page of working, and weakest with a disengaged teenager. For scarce subjects it is often the only way to reach a genuine specialist.
Have one direct conversation, then replace them if the answer is vague. Ask the tutor which gap they identified, what they have covered, and what evidence they have that it moved. A tutor who can answer that deserves another fortnight; a tutor who talks about confidence and syllabus coverage in general terms does not. Tell us and we will shortlist someone else, with the first tutor's notes passed on so the diagnosis is not repeated from scratch.
Partly, and the planning comes first. Write the three school deadlines on one page with the actual submission dates, not the ones the student remembers, and identify which single piece is blocking the others. Usually one is. A few sessions on that one piece, with someone who knows the assessment criteria, clears the jam faster than weekly tuition in all three. This is a workload diagnosis, and treating it as a knowledge problem is how families end up with four tutors in February.
No. If a student is on the wrong tier, in the wrong HL subject or at a school whose approach does not suit them, weekly tutoring keeps the marks afloat while postponing the decision, and the decision gets more expensive each term. Book the meeting with the school about placement first. If the outcome is a tier or subject change, a tutor then has a defined job with a deadline, which is the situation where tutoring does its best work.
Usually yes, if the tutor already lives in Thane. Someone near the station reaches Kasarvadavali or Hiranandani Estate quickly off-peak and takes close to an hour in the evening peak, so we match within Thane first and look at Mulund crossing over second. For a scarce subject where no Thane tutor has taught it at your level, the honest options are a weekend slot or online lessons, and we will tell you which before you book.
Send us the year, the board, the subject and the last marked paper. We will read it, tell you which of the five problems it looks like, and say whether a tutor is the right response at all. If it is, you get a shortlist filtered by subject, level and whether the tutor can reach your building on the evening you want, plus one diagnostic session before you commit to a term.
