An IB science home tutor in Mumbai is hired for one of three jobs: repairing a concept, rescuing an internal assessment, or rebuilding exam technique. Those need different tutors. This page covers the sciences available in the International Baccalaureate (IB), how to tell which course and level your child is on, and what home tuition can honestly do about it.
School names are shown for local academic context only. IB Gram is an independent tutoring platform and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or representing any school listed here.

"We need a science tutor" is where almost every enquiry starts and it is never enough to act on. Science is not one subject on either board, and a teacher who is excellent at Higher Level (HL) Chemistry may be weak at Standard Level (SL) Biology and completely unsuited to Middle Years Programme (MYP) integrated sciences. So the first thing we establish is which named course your child is sitting, at which level, and which of the three jobs you are actually buying: concept repair, internal assessment support, or exam technique. Those three produce almost no overlap in shortlists.
Next we ask for one piece of evidence rather than a description. The last marked test or a photograph of a graded practical write-up tells us where the marks are going: if the physics is right and the graph is wrong, your child needs a data and uncertainty specialist rather than another round of theory. If the theory is intact and the answers are losing marks to command words, that is exam technique and it is quicker to fix than anybody expects. If the concepts have not landed at all, nothing else matters until they do.
Then we narrow by level and by geography, in that order. A tutor who has taught HL Chemistry to Diploma Programme (DP) students and marked that internal assessment is a smaller group than a tutor who can teach general science well, and we will tell you when your area and your slot cannot both be satisfied. The platform covers all IB and IGCSE subjects a tutor in Mumbai is ever asked for, but this page is about the sciences, and on the sciences we would rather hand you two genuinely qualified names than five plausible ones.
In the Diploma Programme the sciences group holds several distinct courses: Biology, Chemistry and Physics, alongside Environmental Systems and Societies, Sports Exercise and Health Science, Computer Science and Design Technology. Each is examined in its own right, each is available at more than one level in most schools, and Environmental Systems and Societies sits across two subject groups, which is exactly why families misread it. Your child takes one or two of these, not "science", and the course name on the statement of entry is the only thing a tutor should be matched against.
Below the Diploma the picture inverts. In the MYP, sciences are taught as one integrated subject with its own assessment criteria rather than as three separate subjects, and a student who is comfortable there can still arrive in DP1 unprepared for the depth of a single HL science. In the Primary Years Programme science appears inside inquiry units. On the Cambridge International Education side, students either take Biology, Chemistry and Physics as separate subjects or sit a combined science course, and at either stage there is a Core and Extended decision to make. Those are genuinely different syllabuses with different content, not a harder and easier version of one.
Working out where your child sits takes one document. Find the statement of entry or the current report and read the subject line exactly: it will name the course, the level or tier, and sometimes the option chosen. Where the depth of a single subject is what you need, our subject pages for Physics, Chemistry and Biology go into the papers and the content properly, and this page deliberately does not repeat them. Ask the school's coordinator to confirm the level, and ask for the current subject guide rather than relying on any summary, since the boards revise structure and components on their own cycles.
Every Diploma science carries an Internal Assessment (IA): an individual investigation your child designs, runs, analyses and writes up. The content differs between Biology, Chemistry and Physics; the skills that earn the marks barely differ at all. A research question narrow enough to be answerable, a method with a controlled variable your child can genuinely control, enough data to say something, honest treatment of uncertainty, and a conclusion that engages with the limitations instead of apologising for them. Students lose marks in the same four places whichever science they chose.
The commonest failure is a research question that is too broad, chosen in week one and never tightened. "How does temperature affect enzyme activity" produces a report that could have been written without doing the experiment. The second failure is uncertainty: raw readings copied in with no discussion of instrument precision or repeat variation, which quietly caps the analysis marks. The third is a graph that does not answer the question asked. None of these are content problems and all of them are teachable by somebody who has marked the component.
There is also group practical work and a collaborative element in the Diploma sciences that your child completes through school, not through tuition, and a tutor should say so plainly. For the current structure, the components, the conditions and the documentation your child must submit, use the subject guide the school issues and talk to the coordinator or examinations officer. Any tutor quoting you a mark total or a weighting from memory is quoting something that may already have changed, which matters more in the sciences than in most subjects because the assessment model has been revised more than once.
Science tutors are not distributed evenly across Mumbai, Maharashtra, and the imbalance is sharper at Higher Level than anywhere else. The thickest concentration sits around BKC, Bandra East and Santacruz, which suits families in the Western Suburbs: matching Andheri East to Jogeshwari, or Versova to Oshiwara along Metro Line 1, keeps travel honest. In South Mumbai, families at Peddar Road, Tardeo, Worli and Fort are matched within the island, where Metro Line 3 towards BKC and the Coastal Road have made a 6pm start realistic in places it was not three years ago.
The Central and Eastern Suburbs are the strongest case for matching close to home. Powai and Chandivali are reached off JVLR by road because neither has a station; Kanjurmarg, Bhandup and Mulund run on the Central Line; Chembur, Wadala and Sion connect by the Harbour Line, the Monorail, the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road and the Eastern Freeway, which is why a Chembur family often has better access to a South Mumbai tutor than a Goregaon family does. An IB science home tutor in Mumbai who has to cross the Eastern Express Highway at peak twice a week is a tutor you will be replacing in November.
Navi Mumbai and Thane work on their own logic. Airoli, Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar and Panvel are each a short drive apart on Palm Beach Road and the Sion-Panvel Highway, with the Trans-Harbour Line and the Atal Setu shortening the crossing without making a weekday evening commute from the island city sensible. In Thane, Pokhran Road, Majiwada, Hiranandani Estate and the Ghodbunder Road corridor towards Kasarvadavali decide the timetable, and the Western Line out to Borivali and Dahisar plus Metro Lines 2A and 7 serve the far north, where HL science specialists thin out and hybrid becomes the realistic answer rather than a compromise.
The year here runs June to March or April, and in the sciences the pain is concentrated in the internal assessment rather than spread across the term. Investigation proposals are usually approved early in the year, data collection happens when the laboratory timetable allows rather than when your child is ready, and drafts come due in the same weeks as mock examinations in November and December. A DP1 student in Mulund can be collecting data in September and then not touch the write-up until a January deadline she has forgotten the details of, which is the single most avoidable loss of marks in the sciences.
Families we work with attend a wide range of schools, each running its own internal calendar: Ascend International School and the American School of Bombay in BKC, JBCN International School in Parel, Ryan Global School in Worli, Witty International School in Malad and Chembur, Podar International School in Santacruz and Powai, Hiranandani Foundation School in Powai, Thakur International School in Kandivali East, Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania School in Thane, and D.Y. Patil International School in Nerul. IB Gram is an independent platform, not affiliated with any of these schools, and we do not guarantee grades in any subject.
The practical consequence is that science tuition should be booked around laboratory access rather than around exam dates. Ask the school in June for two things: the assessment calendar, and when your child's cohort has laboratory time for individual investigations. A tutor who knows those dates will push for the write-up while the data is fresh and will plan concept work for the weeks when no practical is scheduled. A tutor who starts in January is doing archaeology on somebody else's data, and that is a far worse use of your money.
Most of it, yes, and it is worth being precise about the part that cannot be taught at your dining table. Nobody arriving at your flat brings a fume cupboard, a data logger or a centrifuge. What a tutor does bring is everything the marks actually hang on outside the practical hour: concepts, calculation, graphing, uncertainty, command words, and the write-up. The experiment itself belongs to the school, and any tutor implying otherwise is selling you something that does not exist.
Home tuition leads for the sciences because the working has to be visible. A tutor beside your child sees the line where the algebra went wrong in a Physics question, the units dropped halfway through a Chemistry calculation, the diagram drawn from memory rather than from the data. That is hard to catch on a screen and it is where most marks are quietly lost. Two or three IB science home classes a week in the fortnight before a paper will do more than a month of theory delivered earlier, provided somebody is watching the pen.
Online still earns its place in two situations. The first is Higher Level specialists: an IB science online tutor in Mumbai who has marked the component you need may live on the other side of the city, and a screen beats a compromise. The second is the write-up, which is a document being edited and therefore suits a shared screen better than a notebook. The arrangement most of our science families settle on is one home session for working and marking, plus one short online slot for the report. Fix the pattern after the diagnostic session rather than before it, and agree what happens in monsoon week, because somebody will be stuck on the Western Express Highway in July.
Every tutor on the platform clears the same baseline before a family sees a profile: government photo identity, the degree or teaching qualification claimed, the schools and boards taught in with dates, and references we telephone and question. For the sciences we look for one additional thing, because the subject attracts engineering and medical graduates whose content knowledge is strong and whose knowledge of the assessment is not: evidence of having taught or marked the specific course at the specific level, ideally with a sample of marked student work including a practical write-up. A parent hiring an IB science home tutor in Mumbai should see that evidence before the first session rather than after it.
Your own questions should be narrow. Ask which internal assessments the tutor has supervised or marked and what a weak research question looks like, because the answer separates a graduate from a teacher in about thirty seconds. Ask how she handles a student who can recite the theory and still loses half the marks on a structured question. Ask for the first month in order, not in themes. And be wary of anybody who offers a guaranteed grade, mentions a success rate, or promises to write any part of the investigation, which is academic misconduct and puts the whole Diploma at risk.
The same verification applies across all IB and IGCSE subjects home classes Mumbai families book through us, and so does the exit. If the match is wrong, tell us within the first three or four sessions and we arrange somebody else without an argument. IB Gram does not guarantee grades and we publish no outcome statistics. What we will do is replace a tutor quickly and build the second shortlist from exactly what you tell us went wrong in the first, which is usually level rather than personality.
This is the question families actually need answered and it rarely gets asked until too late. The honest version is that the number of sciences and their levels should follow the university direction, not the other way round, and that a student carrying three sciences with two at Higher Level is carrying three internal assessments that all come due in the same term. Medicine-track students generally need Biology and Chemistry at Higher Level and should check the requirements for the specific countries and courses they are aiming at, not a general rule they heard from somebody's cousin. Engineering-track students generally need Physics and Mathematics at Higher Level and can take the second science lighter.
The failure mode we see most often is the student who keeps three sciences at Higher Level to stay flexible, then produces three mediocre investigations and a thin Extended Essay because there were never enough hours. Dropping one to Standard Level in DP1 is a far better decision than discovering in DP2 that it has to be dropped anyway. A good tutor will say this out loud in the first month, even though it reduces the hours she might otherwise sell you, and that willingness is a reasonable test of whether she is working for your child.
Fees follow the same logic, and the factors are worth knowing before you ask anybody for a rate. IB tuition fees in Mumbai depend on the board and level, how scarce that specific combination is, the tutor's experience with the assessment, session length, travel distance and the time of day; an HL Physics specialist crossing the city at 7pm is a different proposition from an MYP sciences tutor two buildings away. We do not publish a price list because a single city-wide figure for the sciences would mislead you. For university entry requirements, deadlines and subject prerequisites, use the universities' own published pages or your school's counsellor rather than any tuition website, including this one.
In four weeks the honest expectation is diagnostic clarity rather than improvement. By the end of the first month you should know precisely why marks are being lost: concepts, calculation, data skills or command words. You should have seen worked solutions in your child's own handwriting, and one structured question attempted under time. A grade change in a month is not a realistic target in a science and nobody should be promising one.
By the end of a term the pattern should be visible in the right order. Calculation accuracy usually improves first, because it responds to drilling. Command-word discipline follows, as your child learns that explain, describe and evaluate are instructions rather than synonyms. Data and uncertainty skills improve next, and conceptual depth at Higher Level is slowest of all because it depends on having met enough problems. An arrangement a term old should be producing a short record each session: what was covered, what was marked, what is next.
Across a full exam cycle, tuition improves preparation and preparation improves the odds, and that is the limit of what anybody can claim. We do not guarantee grades. Two honest caveats belong here. A student who does not attempt problems between sessions will not improve in a science however good the tutor, because the subject is learned by failing at questions. And if a child is struggling across five subjects, another science hour is the wrong purchase; the problem is workload or organisation, and we will say so rather than book the slot.
Send us four things and the match usually takes a day or two: the named science and level, the school and year group, one marked test or practical write-up, and the two weekday slots you can hold for the rest of the year. If you want a home tutor for all IB and IGCSE subjects Mumbai parents typically ask about rather than one science, say so, because that is a different kind of tutor and a different shortlist.
The first session is paid and diagnostic. Expect your child to attempt a structured question under time, talk through one calculation aloud, and show a graph she has drawn, after which the tutor should tell you plainly which of the four failure types you are dealing with. The second session should start the plan for the month. By the third you should be able to see the method: are problems being worked by your child, or is the tutor demonstrating while she watches.
After that it is weekly, and the thing to monitor is whether the work is moving from the tutor's pen to your child's. Ask to see the file every fortnight for the first two months. If sessions have become lectures, say so immediately rather than at the end of term, and if the fit is wrong we will arrange a different tutor rather than ask you to persist. For the depth of one subject, our Physics, Chemistry and Biology pages are the better starting point than this one.
Usually yes, since BKC and Bandra East sit near the densest concentration of science tutors in the city. A tutor coming from Santacruz, Khar West or Bandra West manages a 6.30pm start, and Metro Line 3 towards Cuffe Parade has made the trip from South Mumbai workable too. Register the tutor at your gate as a standing weekly visitor rather than signing her in as a stranger every week, because ten minutes lost at security each session adds up to a full lesson across a term.
They are not alternatives for the same purpose, which is where this decision usually goes wrong. Environmental Systems and Societies sits across two subject groups and suits a student whose direction is not laboratory science; Physics at Higher Level is a prerequisite for most engineering routes and for several physical-science degrees. Check the published entry requirements for the specific universities and courses your child is aiming at, then ask the school's counsellor. Choose from the requirement backwards, never from which subject looks lighter this year.
Yes, for everything except the experiment itself. The marks on a science investigation come mainly from the research question, the method design, the handling of uncertainty, the analysis and the evaluation, all of which are taught at a table with the data in front of you. The practical work happens at school on the school's timetable. What a tutor must never do is write any part of the report, which is academic misconduct and puts the entire Diploma at risk, so ask directly how she draws that line.
Rarely, and the reason is arithmetic rather than ability. Three Higher Level sciences means three individual investigations with drafts and deadlines falling in the same months as mock examinations and an Extended Essay. Strong students manage it and produce three adequate reports instead of two good ones. Unless a specific university requirement forces it, dropping one to Standard Level early in DP1 usually produces a better overall result. Confirm requirements from the universities' own pages before making the decision either way.
Adequately with a tablet and a stylus, poorly with a phone camera. The reason home tuition leads for the sciences is that dropped units, reversed signs and algebra errors appear while the pen is moving, and a tutor watching a finished answer sees only the result. If you do use online lessons, insist your child works on a tablet the tutor can see live, or photographs each attempt before the session. Most of our science families keep the working in a home session and use online time for the write-up.
Level and board first, then how scarce that exact combination is, the tutor's experience with the assessment, session length, travel distance and the time of day. A Higher Level Physics specialist crossing from Andheri to Kharghar for a 7pm slot is pricing an hour of teaching plus two hours of road. We do not publish rates, because one figure for the whole city would be actively misleading. Ask any tutor to break her rate down against those factors, and be cautious of a flat number quoted before she knows the level.
Common, and it usually points at one specific gap rather than at ability. Chemistry punishes two things Mathematics does not: precise use of terminology, and tracking units and states through a multi-step calculation. A student who computes fluently can still lose most of the marks on a structured question by answering the wrong command word. Ask the tutor to diagnose across those three areas separately in the first session, because the fix for terminology is completely different from the fix for calculation discipline.
At Middle Years Programme level often yes, since sciences there are integrated and taught as one subject. At Higher Level in the Diploma, almost never, and you should treat a claim to teach all three at that depth as a reason to ask harder questions. Ask which of the three she has actually taught to examination classes and which internal assessments she has marked. There is no single best IB tutor in Mumbai across all the sciences, and the honest ones name their one or two subjects without being pushed.
For a weekend slot sometimes, for a standing weekday evening rarely, and we would rather tell you that upfront. Navi Mumbai works node to node: Airoli, Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar and Panvel are minutes apart on Palm Beach Road, and a resident tutor holds a weekly slot for a year where a commuter lasts a term. For a Higher Level science with no local specialist, the better answer is an online specialist plus a local tutor for working and marking rather than a long weekly drive.
Ask for the diagnosis in writing, because after four weeks that is the deliverable, not a grade. The tutor should be able to say which of concepts, calculation, data skills or command words is costing the marks, and show you worked attempts in your child's handwriting rather than her own. If there is no written plan and no file of your child's work, the sessions have been demonstrations. Tell us and we will reset the arrangement or shortlist a different tutor at the right level.
Yes, and a session or two spent on this is often the best value you will get. A tutor who has taught the courses can explain honestly what Higher Level Chemistry demands week to week compared with Standard Level, and what carrying two investigations alongside an Extended Essay feels like in November. She should not be the only voice; the school's counsellor and the universities' own published requirements decide it. Searches for IB tutors near me Mumbai will not answer a subject-choice question, but a conversation will.
Tell us the named science, the level, the school year and which job you want done: concepts, the investigation, or exam technique. Attach one marked test if you have it. We will send two or three tutors who have taught that exact course and level, with the parts of Mumbai each covers. You speak to them, book a paid diagnostic session, and ask for the first month's plan in writing before the second lesson.
