IB PYP Mathematics Home Tutor in Mumbai

An IB PYP maths home tutor in Mumbai comes to your flat, sits down at your dining table and teaches a child who is still working out what maths even feels like. IB Gram matches that request across South Mumbai, the Western, Central and Eastern Suburbs, Navi Mumbai and Thane, then builds a weekly slot that survives the six o'clock traffic instead of collapsing in week three.

Tutors matched by travel corridor first, then by board and subject
Identity, qualification and IB teaching experience checked before any home visit
A replacement tutor is arranged when the first match does not hold

How IB Gram matches an IB PYP maths home tutor in Mumbai

The message that arrives is almost never "find a tutor". It is usually a full sentence with the real problem buried in the second half: my daughter is in PYP 3 at Ecole Mondiale World School in Juhu, she cries at her maths homework, and I need somebody at the house on Tuesdays and Fridays after five because I get back from Lower Parel at half past six. Both halves matter equally. The first half tells us which tutor can teach the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) at that age. The second half tells us which of those tutors can physically be standing at your gate at five past five, week after week, for a whole term.

So the matching runs travel first. A tutor in Mulund who is genuinely good with eight-year-olds is still the wrong tutor for a family in Khar West on a Wednesday evening, because that tutor will spend longer on the Eastern Express Highway and the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road than in your living room. We keep a tutor's working radius narrow on purpose. Along the Western Line that means Bandra to Santacruz, or Malad to Kandivali, rather than Churchgate to Borivali. In the Central Suburbs it means Powai and Chandivali served from Andheri East, Kanjurmarg or Ghatkopar, because Powai has no station of its own and everything there arrives by road off JVLR. In Navi Mumbai it means node to node, Vashi to Nerul or Belapur to Kharghar, not across the creek for a weekday lesson.

Only then do we look at who has actually taught primary maths inside an IB school rather than coached a Grade 10 board batch. PYP maths teaching is a separate craft. The tutor has to be comfortable sitting with a child who has not yet decided whether she is good at maths, and who will take her cue from the adult's face when she gets a subtraction wrong. A Mathematics tutor in Mumbai who has spent ten years on Diploma Programme (DP) calculus is not automatically that person, and we do not pretend otherwise.

The sequence below is the whole process. Nothing is hidden behind it and there is no sales call in the middle of it.

  • 1. Send the year group, the school, your suburb and two workable time windows.
  • 2. We shortlist only tutors whose existing travel corridor already reaches your address.
  • 3. You speak to each shortlisted tutor by phone before anybody is booked.
  • 4. The first session happens at your home, in the slot you chose.
  • 5. We check in afterwards and change the match if the fit is wrong.
  • 6. The slot is then fixed weekly, with your society gate informed in advance.

Where PYP sits, and what comes after it

The Primary Years Programme covers the early and primary school years, up to the point where a child moves into the Middle Years Programme (MYP). In Mumbai the schools that run it as a full authorised programme are a short list rather than a long one: Ecole Mondiale World School in Juhu and Oberoi International School at Goregaon East (JVLR) are the two most parents are choosing between, with JBCN International School, Parel and Singapore International School at Dahisar East drawing families from the island city and the far north respectively. Several other schools run a primary curriculum that is IB-influenced without being authorised PYP, which is worth checking on the school's own page before you assume the two are the same thing.

What makes this stage structurally different from everything above it is that there is no external examination anywhere in it. No papers, no grade boundaries, no May or November session. Progress is reported through the school's own assessment of conceptual understanding and through units of inquiry, which means a parent gets a report that talks about transdisciplinary skills and a child who cannot reliably work out change from a hundred rupees. That gap between the report language and the kitchen-table reality is the single most common reason a Mumbai parent starts looking for an IB home tutor in Mumbai at this age.

A Mathematics IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) tutor Mumbai parents hire is therefore not preparing anybody for anything. The job is to build the number sense, the place value and the willingness to try that the MYP will assume is already there. The pressure is real but it is deferred: the child who leaves PYP shaky on fractions and negative numbers meets them again in MYP 1 at speed, with a new school timetable and a locker and five other subjects, and the gap widens quietly for two years.

An IB private tutor Mumbai families keep for two or three years at this stage usually starts as a short intervention and turns into a standing appointment, because the parent discovers the useful part is not remediation but the weekly habit of a child explaining her thinking out loud to an adult who is not her mother.

  • No external exams in PYP, so progress is judged by the school, not a board
  • Authorised PYP schools in Mumbai are far fewer than IGCSE or DP schools
  • MYP 1 assumes place value, fractions and basic operations are already secure
  • Report-card language and kitchen-table ability often tell different stories
  • Units of inquiry mean maths arrives inside a topic, not as a clean chapter

What a PYP maths tutor builds now that the Diploma will cash in later

Parents who have an older child already in the Diploma Programme ask about the far end of the road almost immediately, and the honest answer is that it is a long way off but the direction is real. At DP a student chooses between Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches and Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation, and then between Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL) within that choice. The Analysis and Approaches route leans on algebraic fluency, proof and calculus. The Applications and Interpretation route leans on modelling, data and technology use. Every DP student in either route also produces a mathematical exploration as the Internal Assessment (IA), a piece of independent written mathematics on a topic of their own choosing. Check the current subject guide or your school's coordinator for how any of this is structured and weighted in the year your child actually sits it, because the IB revises its guides on its own cycle and a figure that was true last year may not be true next.

None of that is a PYP tutor's business to teach. What it does tell you is which habits are worth money later. The AA and AI route choice at sixteen is usually decided by how comfortable a student is manipulating symbols without a context to lean on, and that comfort is laid down years earlier by children who were allowed to see that a number can be taken apart and put back together. The HL versus SL decision is largely a question of stamina with unfamiliar problems. The exploration rewards a student who can hold a question in her head for three weeks without being told the method. These are dispositions, not topics, and they are built at seven, not seventeen.

So the concrete work in a PYP maths session looks small and slow. A tutor spends twenty minutes on why the nine in ninety and the nine in nine hundred are not the same nine, using the physical arrangement of counters on the table rather than a rule. Another session is spent entirely on a child being allowed to get a problem wrong, say out loud why she thought it was right, and find the error herself. A third works on reading a word problem twice before touching a pencil, which is a skill that is still earning marks for students in DP 2.

Our siblings pages cover the full PYP maths scope and sequence strand by strand, and the DP route teaching in detail. This page stays on what the home visit itself is for.

  • Place value taught physically on the table before it becomes a written rule
  • Mental strategies for addition and subtraction, not just the column method
  • Fractions as equal parts of a real object before any common denominator
  • Word problems read twice, pencil down, before any calculation begins
  • Permission to be wrong out loud, which is the habit the Diploma rewards
  • Early algebraic thinking through patterns, which feeds Analysis and Approaches later

Which parts of Mumbai we cover for home visits

IB Gram arranges an IB PYP maths home tutor in Mumbai across six working zones, and the zone matters more than the pin code because it determines who can realistically reach you on a weekday evening. In South Mumbai we cover Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Fort, Walkeshwar, Babulnath, Tardeo, Peddar Road and Worli. The island is dense and the distances are short, but short is not fast: a tutor crossing from Worli down to Colaba covers a handful of kilometres and can still lose most of an hour to the Peddar Road and Haji Ali signals in the evening peak. We match within the island rather than bringing a tutor down from the suburbs, and the Coastal Road has helped the Worli to Nariman Point leg more than it has helped anything east of it.

In the Western Suburbs we cover Bandra, Khar, Santacruz, Juhu, Andheri, Goregaon, Malad, Kandivali, Borivali and Dahisar. This zone runs north to south along the Western Express Highway, the Link Road and the Western Line, with Metro Line 1 crossing at Andheri and Metro Lines 2A and 7 running the Dahisar to Gundavali stretch. Matching along the line works; matching across it does not. In the Central Suburbs we cover Powai, Chandivali, Kurla, Ghatkopar and Kanjurmarg, where the Central Line and the Eastern Express Highway do the heavy lifting and JVLR and the SCLR fill the gaps. In the Eastern Suburbs we cover Chembur, Wadala, Govandi, Vikhroli, Bhandup and Mulund, where the Eastern Freeway makes the island city far closer than the map suggests and the Chembur to Wadala Monorail is a genuine option for a tutor without a car.

Navi Mumbai is planned in nodes, so we treat it that way: Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar, Airoli and Panvel, connected by Palm Beach Road, the Sion-Panvel Highway and the Harbour and Trans-Harbour lines, with the Navi Mumbai Metro running Belapur to Pendhar. The Atal Setu has changed what is possible for a weekend session from the island city, but we still do not promise a weekday evening tutor who crosses the creek, because that arrangement reliably fails by the fourth week. Thane we cover from the station west and east across Pokhran Road, Majiwada and Ghodbunder Road out to Kasarvadavali, and the Ghodbunder stretch sets the schedule more than anything else in the city.

IB Gram operates across Mumbai, Maharashtra and matches tutors by zone and corridor rather than claiming city-wide availability at every hour. Searches like "IB tutors near me Mumbai" are really questions about travel time, and that is how we read them.

  • South Mumbai: Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Fort, Walkeshwar, Tardeo, Peddar Road, Worli
  • Western Suburbs: Bandra, Khar, Santacruz, Juhu, Andheri, Goregaon, Malad, Borivali, Dahisar
  • Central Suburbs: Powai, Chandivali, Kurla, Ghatkopar, Kanjurmarg, reached by road off JVLR
  • Eastern Suburbs: Chembur, Wadala, Govandi, Vikhroli, Bhandup, Mulund via the Eastern Freeway
  • Navi Mumbai: Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar, Airoli, Panvel, matched node to node
  • Thane: Pokhran Road, Majiwada, Ghodbunder Road and Kasarvadavali, scheduled around the traffic

How the Mumbai school calendar shapes a weekly home slot

PYP has no examination season, which fools parents into thinking the year is flat. It is not. The pressure points are set by the school's own reporting cycle and by the rest of the household. The first few weeks after the June start are when a new teacher's expectations land and when a child who coasted last year is suddenly visibly behind. The stretch before the first reporting cycle and the parent-teacher conferences is when most families call us, because that is when the report language arrives and the gap becomes undeniable. The Diwali break resets everything and the fortnight after it is the worst time to start something new. March and April carry the tail end of the year and the transition conversations about moving up a year group or into MYP.

The household calendar matters just as much. A family in Chembur with one child in PYP 4 and one in DP 2 will discover in October that the older child's Internal Assessment drafts and the younger child's maths slot are competing for the same adult attention and the same quiet room. Families near Dhirubhai Ambani International School at BKC and the American School of Bombay deal with a different squeeze, because BKC traffic in the evening peak decides whether a tutor arrives at six or at half past. In Thane, families at Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania School plan around the Ghodbunder Road commute rather than the school bell. In Navi Mumbai, families at D.Y. Patil International School in Nerul usually want a slot that fits between the school bus drop and dinner, which in practice means a tutor who already lives in the node.

Our practical advice on scheduling is boring and it works. Pick a slot that is slightly later than you think you need, because the thing that kills a weekly arrangement is not the tutor's commitment but a twenty-minute delay happening every single week until everybody is irritated. Avoid the half hour immediately after the school bus arrives, when a seven-year-old is hungry and useless. Keep the slot on the same two days every week so it becomes furniture rather than a negotiation.

IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with Ecole Mondiale World School, Oberoi International School, Dhirubhai Ambani International School, the American School of Bombay or any other school named on this page. We name them because they set the calendar our tutors work around, nothing more.

  • The weeks before the first reporting cycle are when most PYP enquiries arrive
  • The fortnight after Diwali is the worst window to begin a new arrangement
  • Avoid the half hour right after the school bus; a hungry child learns nothing
  • Same two days every week, so the slot stops being a weekly negotiation
  • Pick a slightly later start time than you need, to absorb the traffic

Is home tuition better than online for PYP maths in Mumbai?

For a child under about eleven, home tuition is the stronger option in almost every case, and that is why an IB PYP maths home tutor in Mumbai is the lead service on this page. The reason is physical. Early maths is taught with objects. A tutor who can push ten counters into two groups of five, fold a paper strip into quarters in front of the child, or draw a number line across the length of the dining table is doing something a shared screen cannot replicate. A seven-year-old also reads an adult's attention from their body, not from a video tile, and will keep trying for a person sitting next to her in a way she will not for a face in a window.

There is a second reason that nobody puts in a brochure. A home session is supervised by accident. You hear the tone of voice from the next room. You notice whether the tutor is explaining or dictating. You see what your child's face does when she is stuck. Mathematics home classes Mumbai parents arrange in PYP are, in practice, the only reliable way for a parent to audit the teaching their child is getting, and that visibility is worth more at this age than any credential on paper.

Online is still a real option and we will arrange it honestly rather than talking you out of it. An IB online tutor in Mumbai makes sense when the subject is scarce and the right person simply does not live in your zone, when your building has a genuine access problem, when the family travels, or when the child is older and already self-managing. It also removes the travel failure mode entirely, which matters on the Ghodbunder Road and Peddar Road corridors. The honest trade-offs are that attention spans shorten, manipulatives have to be replaced by whatever is on the child's desk, and a parent usually has to sit in for the first few sessions to run the technology, which costs you the very evening you were trying to free up.

Hybrid is what most PYP families settle into after a term: one home visit a week for the teaching that needs hands, plus one shorter online session for practice review and homework checking. It keeps the travel load on the tutor manageable, which is directly why the arrangement survives, and it gives you a second contact point in the week without a second gate pass.

  • Home visits allow counters, paper folding and a number line drawn full size
  • A parent in the next room hears the teaching, which is its own quality check
  • Online suits scarce subjects, building access problems and travelling families
  • Online costs you attention span and usually needs a parent running the devices
  • Hybrid: one home session for hands-on work, one shorter online practice check
  • Hybrid keeps a tutor's weekly travel sustainable, which is why slots hold

How do we check a tutor before they enter your home in Mumbai?

Before any IB PYP maths home tuition in Mumbai is arranged, we verify three things ourselves: government photo identity against the name the tutor gives, the degree or teaching qualification they claim, and their actual history of teaching the IB at primary level rather than at Grade 10 or Grade 12. We also ask for two contactable references from previous tutoring work and we call them. A tutor who cannot produce a reference from a family they taught for a full term does not get listed for home visits. We check the stated travel corridor too, because a tutor who overstates their radius during onboarding is the single most common cause of an arrangement quietly failing in week four.

There are checks only you can do, and you should do them. Ask the tutor to teach a short piece of maths in front of you in the first session rather than talking about their approach. Watch what happens when your child gets something wrong: a tutor who immediately supplies the answer is managing the parent in the room, not teaching the child. Ask what they would do differently if your daughter is still counting on her fingers in three months. Ask whether they will mark the school's own work or only their own worksheets, and whether they will speak to you for five minutes at the end of each session.

Be wary of a tutor who promises a specific grade, a guaranteed level or a fixed number of weeks to fix a problem, particularly at an age with no external examination to measure against. There is nothing to guarantee in PYP and anyone offering it is selling. We do not guarantee grades at any level, and no honest tutor will either. What we will do is replace a tutor who is not working out, without an argument and without you having to justify the decision in detail.

On household safety, keep the session in a room with a door open or in common space, keep a parent or a known adult in the flat, and tell your society office the tutor's name and the standing slot so that entry is routine rather than negotiated at the gate each week. These are ordinary precautions and a professional tutor will expect all of them without being asked.

  • Photo identity, qualification and primary-level IB teaching history checked before listing
  • Two contactable references from previous families, called rather than filed
  • Stated travel radius verified, because overstated radius breaks slots by week four
  • Ask the tutor to teach in front of you in the very first session
  • Be wary of anyone who promises a specific grade or a fixed repair window
  • Session in open or common space, with a known adult at home

What can a tutor at your dining table do that a screen cannot?

The short answer is that a tutor in your home can see the five things that cause early maths failure, and a screen can see none of them. Take a real case. A PYP 4 child in Powai was described by her school as needing support with number operations. Online, she looked fine: she answered when asked and got most things right. At the dining table in week one the tutor watched her write 403 for forty-three, then correct it, then do it again, then flinch and look at her mother. The problem was not place value. It was that she had learned to check her mother's face instead of the number. No video call surfaces that, because the mother is not in the frame and the flinch does not survive compression.

A home visit also puts the tutor inside the actual working conditions. The table is too high for the child's elbows. The light is behind her. Her younger brother's cartoons are audible from the next room at exactly the volume that makes mental arithmetic impossible. The school's maths book is at the bottom of a bag that has not been opened since Friday. These are not trivia; they are the reason an hour of teaching produces twenty minutes of learning. A tutor in the room fixes four of those five problems in the first session and tells you about the fifth.

Then there is the equipment. Early number work wants objects: bottle caps, matchsticks, a pack of cards, coins, a folded sheet of paper. A tutor who is physically present uses whatever is in your kitchen drawer, which also teaches the parent that maths practice does not require a purchase. Fractions taught by cutting a real chapati into eighths lands differently from fractions taught by a diagram, and the child who has done it with her hands will still have the image two years later when a textbook asks her to compare three-quarters and five-eighths.

The last thing is the five minutes after the session. A home tutor stands at your door and tells you one specific thing to do before next week: stop correcting her mental arithmetic mid-sentence, or ask her to explain one homework question to you out loud each evening. That handover is the part of the arrangement that actually changes the other hundred and sixty-seven hours of the week, and it is the first thing to disappear when a session happens on a screen in a closed bedroom. A home tutor for Mathematics Mumbai families book at this age is being hired as much for those five minutes as for the sixty before them.

  • Sees the flinch, the glance at a parent, the guess dressed up as an answer
  • Fixes the physical setup: table height, light, noise from the next room
  • Teaches fractions with a real chapati, cards or bottle caps from your kitchen
  • Finds the school book at the bottom of the unopened bag and uses it
  • Hands you one specific instruction at the door for the coming week
  • Builds a habit the child associates with her own home, not a device

What should progress look like after four weeks of IB home tuition in Mumbai?

At four weeks you should see changes in behaviour, not in marks. The child should open her maths book without a fight, should be willing to say "I don't know" instead of guessing, and should be able to explain one method out loud to you. The tutor should be able to name the specific gap in a single sentence: she is secure to twenty but guesses past a hundred, or she can add but cannot read a word problem. If after four weeks the tutor still describes the problem as "she needs more practice", that is a diagnosis failure and we should change the match rather than wait.

At one term, expect the school's own assessment language to shift and expect the homework fights to be shorter rather than absent. A child who was the slowest in the class is usually still not the fastest; what changes is that she now has a method she trusts and will attempt an unfamiliar question rather than freeze. This is also the point where the tutor should have stopped reteaching and started extending, and where you should ask to see the work from the first week next to the work from last week.

Across a full year, the realistic outcome is a child who arrives in the next year group without a hole in place value, fractions and operations, and who is not frightened of maths. That is the whole goal at this stage and it is worth more than any number on a report. There are no guarantees in this, and IB Gram does not guarantee grades or outcomes. Learning is not linear, a child can plateau for six weeks for reasons nobody can see, and a tutor who tells you otherwise is managing you.

Parents who search for the best IB tutor in Mumbai usually mean the tutor their child will actually sit still for, and that is a fit question rather than a ranking question. Every IB tutor Mumbai parents meet through us is a specific person with specific strengths, and the honest limit of our role is that we match carefully, check thoroughly, and swap quickly when the match is wrong. Nobody can promise you the right person on the first attempt.

  • Four weeks: behaviour changes, a named gap, and a willingness to say I don't know
  • One term: shorter homework fights and a method the child trusts under pressure
  • One year: no hole in place value, fractions and operations going into the next year
  • Ask to see week-one work beside last week's work, side by side
  • Plateaus of several weeks are normal and are not automatically a tutor problem
  • A tutor who says only "more practice" after a month has not diagnosed anything

Booking an IB PYP maths home tutor in Mumbai: what to prepare

You need four things to get a useful shortlist, and you probably already have all of them. The year group and the school. Your suburb or node, and your society or building name if entry needs a pass. Two time windows that genuinely work on two different days, allowing for traffic rather than for an ideal evening. And one sentence about what you are actually worried about, in your own words, because "she is behind in maths" and "she has decided she is bad at maths" lead to two completely different tutors.

Before the first session, put the school's maths book and the last marked piece of work on the table, clear a surface at the right height for the child, and turn the television off in the next room. Tell your society office the tutor's name and the standing slot. Decide in advance which adult will be in the flat, and let the tutor know if it will be a grandparent or house help rather than a parent, because the end-of-session handover needs somebody who will pass the message on.

The first session is diagnostic and should feel slow. The tutor will spend most of it watching your child work rather than teaching, often going back two years to find where the ground is solid. Expect very little new content and expect your child to say it was easy. At the end, you should get one sentence naming the gap, one sentence on the plan for the next month, and one thing to change at home. If you do not get those three things, tell us, and we will look at the match again.

IB tuition fees in Mumbai depend on the board, the level, how scarce the subject is, the distance the tutor travels and the session length, which is why we quote per match rather than publishing a price list. A PYP home visit in Kharghar and a DP Higher Level (HL) visit in Cuffe Parade are not the same job and should not carry the same number.

  • Have ready: year group, school, suburb, society name, two real time windows
  • Write one sentence on the actual worry, not the report-card wording
  • Put the school book and last marked work on the table beforehand
  • Tell the society office the tutor's name and the standing weekly slot
  • Expect a slow diagnostic first session with very little new teaching
  • Ask for the gap, the month's plan and one change at home, in writing
FAQs

Mumbai tutoring — questions parents ask

What does an IB PYP maths home tutor in Mumbai actually do in the first session?+

Mostly watch your child work, and teach very little. An IB PYP maths home tutor in Mumbai uses the first visit to find where the ground is solid, which usually means going back a year or two and working forward until something wobbles. The tutor will ask your child to explain her thinking out loud, will look at the school's own marked work rather than a generic worksheet, and will check the physical setup in your flat. You should expect your child to report that it was easy, and you should get one sentence at the door naming the specific gap and what happens next month.

Will a tutor travel to Kharghar or Panvel for a weekday evening slot?+

Yes, provided the tutor is already based in Navi Mumbai rather than crossing the creek for it. We match Kharghar and Panvel families to tutors living in the nodes along Palm Beach Road and the Sion-Panvel Highway, usually Belapur, Kharghar, Nerul or Panvel itself. The Atal Setu has made a weekend session from the island city workable, but we do not arrange a weekday evening tutor who travels from South Mumbai or the Western Suburbs, because that arrangement reliably collapses by the fourth week and you are the one left rescheduling.

What do IB tuition fees in Mumbai depend on for PYP maths?+

Five things, and we quote per match rather than publishing a list. The board and the level matter, because PYP maths and DP Higher Level maths are different jobs. Subject scarcity matters, which is why a PYP maths tutor is easier to place than a DP Applications and Interpretation tutor. Travel distance matters, because a tutor crossing Ghodbunder Road twice loses an evening. Session length matters, as does frequency, since two shorter visits a week are priced differently from one long one. We will not quote a figure on a page because any figure here would be wrong for somebody.

Does my society need to issue a gate pass for a weekly tutor?+

Usually yes, and sorting it out before the first visit saves you a monthly argument. Most Mumbai societies will register a recurring visitor against a flat number for a fixed day and time, which turns the gate into a formality rather than a ten-minute phone call while your child waits. Give the office the tutor's full name and the standing slot, and tell us if your building needs identity documents submitted in advance so the tutor brings them. In gated complexes in Powai, Kharghar and Thane this is routine; in older island-city buildings there is often no process at all.

Can both parents be out at work while the session runs at home?+

It can work, but somebody known to the child should be in the flat, and that person needs to be able to pass on the tutor's end-of-session message. In practice that is often a grandparent or long-standing house help. Tell us in advance so the tutor knows who to hand over to, and ask the tutor to send you a short written note after each session instead of relying on a verbal relay. Keep the session in common space rather than a bedroom. If nobody can be at home at all, a hybrid arrangement with the online session on the parent-free evening is usually the better answer.

My child is in PYP 4 and still counts on her fingers. Is that a problem?+

Not by itself, but it is worth investigating rather than drilling. Finger counting at that age usually means the number bonds to ten are not automatic, so every calculation is being rebuilt from scratch and there is no working memory left for the actual problem. A tutor will test that directly in the first session. The fix is short daily practice on bonds and doubles, plus strategy work on bridging through ten, not more worksheets of the same sums. What matters more is whether she is also avoiding maths, because the avoidance takes longer to undo than the arithmetic does.

What happens if the tutor is not working out after three weeks?+

Tell us and we change the tutor, without requiring a detailed justification. A mismatch at this age is usually about manner rather than competence: the tutor is too brisk, or too soft, or talks to you instead of to your child. We ask for one concrete example so the next match is better targeted, then shortlist again from the same travel corridor so your slot does not have to move. You do not owe anybody a term's notice and you do not need to have the awkward conversation with the tutor yourself if you would rather not.

Does online really work for a seven-year-old, or should I insist on home classes?+

For most seven-year-olds, insist on home classes. Early maths is taught with physical objects and judged by watching a child's hands and face, and both of those survive the journey to a screen badly. An IB online tutor in Mumbai is the right call when the subject is scarce, when your building has a real access problem, or when the family travels, and it does remove the traffic risk entirely. Be aware that it usually costs you a parent sitting in to run the devices for the first several sessions, which is the evening you were trying to get back.

How does a Ghodbunder Road or Peddar Road commute affect the slot I can book?+

It decides your slot more than your preference does. A tutor living near Thane station reaches Kasarvadavali on Ghodbunder Road in a fraction of the time off-peak that the same trip takes at seven in the evening, so a 6pm start in that corridor is a promise nobody can keep weekly. The same is true crossing Peddar Road and Haji Ali in South Mumbai. We will offer you a slightly later start, or a tutor already living on your side of the bottleneck, because a slot that is twenty minutes late every week ends the arrangement faster than a bad tutor does.

Should we be thinking about Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation now?+

No. That choice belongs to the Diploma Programme years and nothing you do in PYP needs to anticipate it. What is worth knowing is which habits feed which route: comfort with manipulating symbols without a context feeds Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches, while comfort with data, modelling and technology feeds Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation. Both are built by a child who is allowed to take numbers apart and put them back together. If you want the route decision itself discussed properly, that belongs on our Diploma maths pages, and your school's coordinator will have the current subject guide.

Where in the building or flat should the session happen?+

At a table in common space, at a height where your child's elbows rest comfortably, with the light in front of her rather than behind. The dining table is usually the right answer and a bedroom usually is not. Turn off the television in the next room, because background cartoons at conversational volume make mental arithmetic genuinely impossible for a child this age. Some complexes in Powai, Goregaon East (JVLR) and Kharghar have a clubhouse study room that works well when the flat is noisy; check whether an outside tutor is permitted there before relying on it.

There has been no visible progress after a month. What happens next?+

We ask the tutor to name the gap in one sentence, and if they cannot, we change the tutor. After four weeks you should see behaviour change rather than marks: less resistance to opening the book, a willingness to say she does not know, and an ability to explain one method to you. If none of that has moved, the likely causes are a mis-diagnosed gap, a slot that is too late in the evening for a tired child, or a manner mismatch. All three are fixable. A plateau of a few weeks after real early progress is normal and is a different situation.

Send us the year group, the school, your suburb or node and two time windows that genuinely work, plus one sentence on what is actually worrying you. We come back with a short list of tutors whose travel corridor already reaches your address, and you speak to each of them by phone before anything is booked. The first visit happens at your home in the slot you chose, and we check in afterwards to confirm the fit or change it.
