How do we find an IB PYP English tutor in Mumbai for your child?

Send one message with four things in it: your child's grade, the school, what the English problem actually looks like at home, and the two or three slots that work in your week. We filter the Mumbai tutor list by Primary Years Programme experience and by travel zone, speak to the two or three who fit, and send you their profiles with the evenings each one can hold.

The filtering call is short and specific. We ask which unit of inquiry the class is in right now, and whether the worry is decoding, comprehension, written output, spelling and conventions, or a child who will not speak in a presentation. Those are five different tutors. A Grade 3 child in Juhu who reads two years ahead of her class but cannot plan a paragraph needs someone strong on structure and oral rehearsal. A Grade 4 child who moved into PYP from a state board in October and is still sounding out longer words needs someone who can run a reading assessment without making it feel like a test. An IB private tutor Mumbai families book for PYP language work should be able to tell you which of those two children they are better with.

We send two or three profiles, not ten. A long list looks generous and wastes a fortnight, because PYP language work depends on a tutor who can hold the same weekday slot through a whole term. Each profile says what the tutor has taught, which parts of Mumbai they cover, and what they would do in a first session. You pick one, we fix the slot, and the first session happens at your home unless you ask for online.

After that session the tutor sends a short plan: what they saw in the child's reading and writing, what the first four weeks will work on, and what they want from you at home. We check in with you after session one and again at the four-week mark. If the match is wrong, say so then rather than at the end of term. Replacing a tutor in week two costs your child nothing. Replacing one in week ten means a lost term of reading habits.

  • 1. Send the grade, the school and the language concern in one message.
  • 2. We filter Mumbai tutors by PYP experience and by travel zone.
  • 3. You get two or three profiles with the slots each can hold.
  • 4. A first session happens at your home, or online if you prefer.
  • 5. We check in after that session and swap the tutor if needed.

Where English sits in the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) that Mumbai schools run

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) does not teach English as a separate walled subject. Language runs through six transdisciplinary themes, and most Mumbai PYP schools also timetable stand-alone language time alongside them. A tutor therefore has to work with both: the inquiry the class is in, and the language skills the school reports on separately.

The six themes are Who We Are, Where We Are in Place and Time, How We Express Ourselves, How the World Works, How We Organize Ourselves, and Sharing the Planet. A class spends several weeks on a unit of inquiry built from one of them, and the reading, writing, talking and presenting all sit inside that unit. When a Grade 2 class in Powai is inquiring into How We Express Ourselves through festivals, the writing task is a description of a Ganpati visarjan the child has actually seen, not a decontextualised comprehension passage. A PYP transdisciplinary learning tutor in Mumbai has to plan from the school's current programme of inquiry rather than from a graded workbook bought at a Fort bookshop.

Two other structures shape what a tutor can usefully do. The IB learner profile names the dispositions the school reports on, and three of them are mostly language: communicator, inquirer and reflective. The approaches to learning, or ATL, give the school its vocabulary for skills, and communication skills sit in there next to thinking, social, self-management and research skills. When a report says your child is developing as a communicator, that is a statement about oral and written language, and it is the thing a tutor can move. Ask your school's PYP coordinator for the current programme of inquiry and the language policy. The IB revises its programme documents on its own cycle, so work from what your school is running this year rather than a summary you found online.

The last PYP year ends with the exhibition, a long collaborative inquiry the child presents. Its language demands are real, but the exhibition has its own page on this site and its own specialists, so a PYP transdisciplinary learning IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) tutor Mumbai parents book for general English work will usually treat it as one deadline among several rather than the whole brief. There are no external PYP examinations. Reporting is descriptor-based and conference-based, which is why parents often cannot tell whether a language problem is real until Grade 4 or Grade 5.

  • Six transdisciplinary themes carry the reading, writing, speaking and presenting work
  • Stand-alone language time runs alongside the units in most Mumbai PYP schools
  • Learner profile descriptors like communicator and reflective are language statements
  • Approaches to learning put communication skills beside thinking and self-management
  • No external exams, so reports and conferences are your only early signal

Oral, written and visual language: what a PYP English tutor actually teaches

PYP language is organised into three strands, and a good tutor names which one they are working on each week. Oral language covers listening and speaking. Written language covers reading and writing. Visual language covers viewing and presenting, which is the strand Mumbai parents are least aware of and the one that surprises them when the child has to stand up and present. Most children are uneven across the three, and a descriptor-based report often averages that unevenness away.

Take a How We Express Ourselves unit on the way stories carry culture. The class reads folk tales, including Marathi and Gujarati ones in translation, then writes its own retelling and performs it. A tutor who understands the unit works on four separate things in that fortnight: the narrative shape, so the retelling has a problem and a resolution rather than a list of events; paragraphing and dialogue punctuation, taught on the child's own draft rather than in an exercise; a vocabulary bank the child collects from the reading and is then expected to use; and the oral rehearsal, which for a shy Grade 3 child in Bandra is often the hardest part and the part nobody practises. A tutor who ignores the unit hands over a photocopied comprehension sheet, and the class teacher sees no change at all.

On the reading side the useful work is diagnostic before it is remedial. A tutor listens to the child read aloud, notes what kind of error repeats, and separates decoding problems from comprehension problems, because those two need opposite interventions. Then the questioning gets deliberate: retrieval questions the text answers directly, inference questions the text only implies, and evaluation questions about why the writer chose that word. Children in English-medium PYP classrooms across Mumbai are frequently strong at retrieval and weak at inference, and a parent cannot see the difference by listening to fluent reading at bedtime.

On the writing side the PYP portfolio is the evidence, so ask to see it. A tutor should be able to flip through a term of the child's own writing and point at what has not changed: still no planning, still one long sentence joined with and, still no paragraph break. Conventions get taught against that evidence. Spelling lists in isolation rarely transfer. Spelling patterns pulled out of the child's own drafts usually do, because the child already cares about that piece of writing.

  • Oral, written and visual language are reported separately and progress unevenly
  • Reading work starts diagnostic: decoding errors and comprehension gaps need opposite fixes
  • Retrieval, inference and evaluation questions, practised in that order, on real texts
  • Conventions taught on the child's own draft, not on a photocopied worksheet
  • Oral rehearsal before every presentation, including the final-year PYP exhibition

Which parts of Mumbai do PYP English home tutors cover?

All six Mumbai zones: South Mumbai, the Western Suburbs, the Central Suburbs, the Eastern Suburbs, Navi Mumbai and Thane. The rule we match by is simple. A tutor who already lives or teaches in your zone will hold a weekday evening slot for a full term. One brought across the city will start rescheduling by the fifth week, whatever they promised in October.

In South Mumbai the distances are short and the clock still beats you. A tutor crossing from Worli to Colaba covers a few kilometres and can lose most of an hour to the Peddar Road and Haji Ali signals at 6pm, so we match inside the island: Cuffe Parade with Colaba, Walkeshwar with Babulnath, Worli with Lower Parel. The Western Line from Churchgate to Mumbai Central, the Harbour Line down to Dockyard, Metro Line 3 from Cuffe Parade towards BKC and the Coastal Road all help a tutor who is already south of Mahalaxmi. In the Western Suburbs everything runs along the line, so Khar West to Santacruz West works, Malad to Kandivali works, and Bandra to Andheri at 6.30pm does not. The Western Express Highway, Link Road, Metro Line 1 from Versova to Ghatkopar and Metro Lines 2A and 7 up to Dahisar carry most of our Juhu, Vile Parle, Goregaon and Borivali matches.

The Central Suburbs sit on the Central Line and the Eastern Express Highway, with Powai and Chandivali hanging off JVLR and no station of their own, so Powai tutors arrive by road from Andheri East, Kanjurmarg or Ghatkopar. The SCLR, the Santacruz to Chembur link road, is what makes a Kurla or Chembur tutor viable in Powai at all. In the Eastern Suburbs, from Chembur and Govandi through Vikhroli and Bhandup up to Mulund, the Eastern Freeway puts South Mumbai closer to Wadala and Chembur than the map suggests, and the Harbour Line carries the rest. Navi Mumbai is matched node to node along Palm Beach Road and the Sion Panvel Highway: Vashi with Nerul, Belapur with Kharghar, Panvel on its own. The Atal Setu and the Trans-Harbour Line have changed what is possible across the creek, but we still do not build a weekly 7pm lesson around either. Thane runs west to east from the station across Pokhran Road, Majiwada and Ghodbunder Road, and Ghodbunder sets the schedule: Kasarvadavali is twenty minutes from the station off-peak and close to an hour in the evening peak. The Bandra Worli Sea Link helps a Bandra tutor reach Worli, and very little else.

A search for IB tutors near me Mumbai returns people who will say yes to any postcode. Ask the question the other way round. An IB PYP English tutor in Mumbai who lives in Thane West and already teaches two children on Pokhran Road will give your Friday slot the same reliability she gives theirs. We would rather tell you we have nobody in Panvel this month than send someone whose commute will not survive the term.

  • South Mumbai matched inside the island: Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Walkeshwar, Worli
  • Western Suburbs matched along the Western Line, not across the highway
  • Powai and Chandivali reached by road via JVLR and the SCLR
  • Navi Mumbai matched node to node: Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar, Panvel
  • Thane slots planned around Ghodbunder Road, not around a map distance

What the Mumbai school year does to a PYP reader and writer

Most Mumbai PYP schools open the academic year in late July or August and close it in May, with the long break through the hottest weeks. Check your own school's calendar, because they differ, but the pressure points are predictable and almost nobody plans for them. The first one is not an assessment at all. It is the monsoon.

From the end of June into September a 6pm home lesson in Mumbai is at the mercy of water on the Western Express Highway, a slow Central Line and a flooded subway at Milan. Families who book tutoring in July lose sessions in August and conclude that tutoring does not work. Agree a monsoon rule in the first week: the session moves online rather than cancelling. Then comes the Diwali break in October or November, which is the best catch-up window in the Mumbai year. A child who reads every day for those two weeks starts the second term visibly ahead, and a child who touches nothing comes back having lost fluency. Tutors are also free in that window at hours that are impossible in term time.

Families we work with have children at Ecole Mondiale World School in Juhu and Oberoi International School on JVLR in Goregaon East, both of which run the PYP, and at Dhirubhai Ambani International School and the American School of Bombay in BKC, Bombay International School at Babulnath, Hiranandani Foundation School in Powai, JBCN International School, Parel, Singapore International School in Dahisar East, Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania School in Thane and D.Y. Patil International School in Nerul, Navi Mumbai. IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with any of these schools, or with the IB itself. We name them because their calendars and their language expectations are what a tutor has to work around.

January and February bring the parent-teacher conference where language concerns usually surface for the first time, and for Grade 5 families the Middle Years Programme transition conversation lands in the same window. February to April is the final-year exhibition term, plus portfolios and end-of-year reports across every grade. If you want a tutor working on written output before the summer report, start in November, not in March. A tutor who begins six weeks before a report can produce a child who writes more. They cannot produce a term of evidence that was never collected.

  • Monsoon weeks from late June: agree an online fallback in advance
  • Diwali break is the best catch-up window in the Mumbai year
  • January conferences are where language concerns usually surface first
  • February to April: exhibition term, portfolios and end-of-year reports
  • Start in November if you want change visible in the summer report

Home tuition, online or hybrid for PYP English in Mumbai

Home tuition is the default at PYP ages and it is what most families book. A seven-year-old does not manage a screen, a mouse and a pencil at the same time. An IB home tutor in Mumbai sitting at your table can put the child's actual reading folder, portfolio and library book in front of her, watch the pencil grip and the rereading, and stop the moment the child's attention goes. The tutor also sees the room the child works in, which often explains the writing problem faster than any diagnostic.

The honest cost of home classes is travel, and you pay it whether you see it or not. A tutor who crosses two zones for a 7pm lesson is giving up a second booking, which shows up in the rate and in how long the arrangement lasts. Home tuition also needs a fixed weekly slot, a cancellation rule and a clear arrangement at the gate. Decide all three in week one. An IB PYP English home tutor in Mumbai who has to argue with a security desk every Thursday will eventually suggest moving online, and you will not know why.

Online earns its place in three situations. The first is scarcity: a mother-tongue or English-as-an-additional-language specialist your zone simply does not have. The second is traffic, which is the Peddar Road and Ghodbunder Road problem, and the monsoon. The third is frequency, where two short online sessions a week beat one long home session for a child building a reading habit. An IB online tutor in Mumbai needs a different setup for a PYP child than for a Diploma Programme (DP) student: an adult nearby for the first five minutes, the book physically in the child's hands rather than on screen, and the writing task done on paper and photographed afterwards.

Hybrid is what most of our PYP language families settle into after a term. One home session a week for the reading, writing and talking that needs a person in the room, and one short online session for a vocabulary review or a plan check before a presentation. Some families run home tuition in the dry months and switch to online through August. A home tutor for PYP transdisciplinary learning Mumbai parents book in July should be asked, in July, how they want to handle the week the roads flood.

  • Home tuition suits PYP ages: physical books, visible handwriting, no screen
  • Travel across zones shows up in the rate and in reliability
  • Online solves scarcity, traffic and the monsoon, not attention span
  • Two short online sessions can beat one long home session weekly
  • Hybrid: home for writing and talking, online for review and planning

How is an IB PYP English tutor in Mumbai checked before you meet them?

Before an IB PYP English tutor in Mumbai reaches your shortlist we verify identity and qualification documents, check the stated Primary Years Programme teaching or tutoring history against references, and ask the tutor to talk through how they would run a first session with a child of your grade. Anyone who cannot describe a programme of inquiry does not get sent out.

Verification on this platform means four concrete things. We see government identity proof. We see degree and teaching qualification documents, and confirm the subject and level claimed rather than the level implied. We take references for the PYP work specifically, because secondary experience does not transfer downwards: a strong Diploma Programme English teacher is often a poor Grade 2 reading tutor, and the reverse is true too. And we ask for a worked answer to a real case, usually a child who reads fluently and writes almost nothing, then listen for whether the plan starts with the child's portfolio or with a workbook.

What we do not claim is that a document check predicts how your child will respond to a stranger in the house. Do your own checking in the first two sessions. Ask the tutor which unit of inquiry the class is in, and whether they have read the school's language policy. Ask for a written plan after session one. Sit within earshot of that session rather than in the room. Ask what they will stop doing if the approach is not working by week four. Be wary of anyone who promises a specific report descriptor, or who talks about outcomes at a primary age as though they were fixed.

Parents regularly ask us to name the best IB tutor in Mumbai for Grade 2 reading, and there is no such person in the abstract. There is a tutor who is right for a child who has lost confidence and wrong for a child who is simply bored, and those two sit in the same band with the same documents on file. The question that gets you a good match is narrower. Which of your tutors has taught a Grade 2 child who reads well and refuses to write, and what did she do in the first month?

  • Government identity proof seen and recorded before any match is sent
  • Degree and teaching qualifications confirmed for the level actually claimed
  • References taken for PYP work, not for secondary teaching experience
  • A worked first-session plan requested and read before approval
  • Ask your tutor which unit of inquiry the class is in

Reading comprehension, bilingual homes and the Grade 5 handover to MYP

The commonest reason a Mumbai parent looks for a PYP English tutor is a child who reads aloud beautifully and understands less than you think. Fluent decoding hides a comprehension gap for years, and in a classroom where discussion is quick and oral a child can follow the shape of a conversation without following the text. The diagnostic is easy to run at home. Ask your child why a character did something, not what they did. Retrieval answers come instantly. Inference answers come slowly or not at all. A child who can retell a chapter but cannot say what the author wanted you to feel is not a weak reader, she is an unpractised one, and that is where an IB PYP English tutor in Mumbai earns the weekly slot.

The writing problem is usually the opposite shape. PYP children write often and briefly, in bursts attached to a unit, and then around Grade 4 the expectation becomes sustained and organised. Children who were never taught to plan simply write longer versions of a Grade 2 paragraph. The work is unglamorous: a planning frame simple enough that the child uses it without being asked, oral rehearsal before the pencil moves, and a hard separation between revising, which changes what the writing says, and editing, which fixes spelling and punctuation. Children who conflate the two produce neat, empty paragraphs and cannot understand why the teacher is unmoved. A tutor should be able to show you two drafts of one piece and point at what changed between them.

Mumbai homes are rarely monolingual. Marathi, Gujarati, Hindi, Konkani, Tamil and Bengali are spoken at home while school runs in English, and parents often decide, wrongly, that the home language is the problem. The IB's position on mother-tongue language is the opposite: the home language is an asset and schools are expected to support it. What actually helps is a vocabulary bridge. A child who owns a concept in Gujarati does not need to relearn the concept, only to label it in English, and a tutor who speaks the home language can do that in a sentence where a monolingual tutor spends a session. Children arriving into PYP from a CBSE or ICSE school have a different gap again: solid grammar drill, weak independent writing, and no experience of being asked for an opinion about a text.

The final PYP year contains a handover nobody announces. Middle Years Programme (MYP) Language and Literature is criterion-assessed, expects longer analytical writing, and assumes a child can take notes, read across genres and present without a script. A child who leaves PYP reading only fiction and only in short bursts feels that change in the first MYP term, usually in October of Grade 6. The useful last-year work is a reading log with genres deliberately mixed, note-taking in the child's own words rather than copied phrases, and oral stamina built by presenting to an adult who asks follow-up questions. Visual language matters here too. Reading an infographic, a photograph or an advertisement is assessed later and taught lightly now.

  • Ask why a character acted, not what they did, to test inference
  • Planning frames and oral rehearsal before the pencil moves on paper
  • Revising changes meaning, editing fixes spelling, and children confuse them
  • Home-language vocabulary bridges beat banning Marathi or Gujarati at the table
  • Final PYP year: mixed-genre reading log, note-taking, presenting without a script

What four weeks, one term and one year of PYP English tutoring look like

At four weeks you should see habits, not results. The child picks up a book without being told, uses a planning sheet unprompted, or stops resisting at writing time. Those three are the honest early signals and they are visible to any parent who is paying attention. What you will not see at four weeks is a changed report, because PYP reporting runs on evidence collected across a whole term. If none of the three has shifted by week five or six, the match is wrong and we should be discussing a replacement rather than giving it more time.

At one term the class teacher starts to notice, and that signal matters more than anything we tell you. The comments change from needs support with written expression to writes at length with increasing control, the child volunteers for a presentation, the portfolio holds a piece the child is actually proud of. On the reading side a term is usually enough to move inference from guessing to reasoning, provided the child is reading at home between sessions. One session a week with nothing in between moves very little, and any tutor who tells you otherwise is selling.

Across a full year the realistic outcome is a child who goes into the next PYP year, or into MYP, without a language problem being the thing every adult discusses. That is worth more than it sounds. We do not guarantee grades or report descriptors, and no honest tutor will tell you otherwise. There are limits you should hear before you book. A tutor cannot diagnose a specific learning difficulty, and a child who still cannot decode reliably by Grade 3 needs a proper assessment from an educational psychologist or a speech and language professional, not more tuition. A tutor also cannot replace daily classroom teaching, or read at home on your behalf.

When it is not working, the sequence is short. Tell us in week four or five with one specific example rather than a general feeling. We put it to the tutor once, because many of these turn out to be a slot problem, a child who is exhausted at 7pm, or a pace mismatch, and all three are fixable in a conversation. If it is not fixable we send a replacement profile, and the new tutor gets the portfolio, the previous plan and a note on what did not land, so your child does not sit through the same baseline session twice in a month.

  • Four weeks: habits change, reports do not, and that is normal
  • Five or six weeks with no habit shift means a wrong match
  • One term: teacher comments change and inference becomes reasoning, with home reading
  • Persistent decoding trouble by Grade 3 needs assessment, not more tuition
  • Replacement tutors receive the portfolio, the plan and what did not work

Booking home classes for PYP English in Mumbai: what to have ready

Have five things on the table for the first session: the child's PYP portfolio or reading folder, the most recent report, the letter or email about the current unit of inquiry, whatever the class teacher said at the last conference, and the book the child is reading now. If you have the school's language policy, add it. A tutor who gets those five runs a diagnostic in one session instead of three, and you pay for one.

Pick the slot honestly. A Grade 2 child who gets home at 4.30 after a long bus run up the Western Express Highway is finished by 6.30, so an evening slot that suits your calendar may be useless for her. Earlier on a weekday, or a mid-morning weekend slot, often works better at these ages. Clear a table with a lamp and no television in the line of sight, and keep phones out of the room, including yours. Tell the security desk the tutor's name and the standing day so that the gate pass is not a weekly negotiation.

The first session is assessment and conversation, not teaching. Expect the tutor to listen to your child read aloud, ask the kind of questions that separate retrieval from inference, look at two pieces of recent writing, and talk to the child about what she actually likes reading. Expect no homework from session one. Within a couple of days you should have a short written plan: the two or three things the next four weeks will work on, what the tutor wants done between sessions, and what you should be able to see by week four. PYP transdisciplinary learning home classes Mumbai families book without that plan tend to drift into general English practice by the second month.

If you are still deciding between two tutors, ask each of them the same question. What would you do in the first twenty minutes with my child? The answers separate people quickly. One will describe a book, a conversation and a piece of the child's own writing. Another will describe a level test. Both are defensible, but you know your child, and you know which one will walk out of that room willing to do it again next week.

  • Bring the portfolio, the last report and the current unit letter
  • Pick a slot before the child is finished for the day
  • Table, lamp, no television in view, and every phone out of the room
  • Give the security desk the tutor's name and the standing weekly day
  • Expect a written four-week plan within two days of session one
FAQs

Mumbai tutoring — questions parents ask

Does a PYP child really need an English tutor when there are no exams?+

Sometimes, and the absence of exams is exactly why the question is hard to answer. PYP reporting is descriptor-based, so a language gap can sit quietly behind a phrase like developing as a communicator until Grade 4 or Grade 5, when written work gets longer and the gap becomes visible to everyone including the child. A tutor is worth booking when something specific is happening: a child who will not write, a child who reads fluently and cannot infer, a child who has joined PYP from another board, or a child heading into the Middle Years Programme next year. General topping-up with no named problem is usually a wasted weekday evening.

My child reads fluently but writes almost nothing. What would a tutor actually do?+

Start with the child's own drafts, not a workbook. The first job is working out whether the block is ideas, structure, or the physical act of writing, because all three look identical from outside. A tutor will usually have the child talk the piece through before writing it, give a planning frame simple enough to use unprompted, and separate revising from editing so the child is not fixing spelling while still deciding what to say. Progress at four weeks looks like a plan the child makes without being asked and a draft that has a middle. Longer, neater paragraphs come after that, not first.

We speak Gujarati and Marathi at home. Should we switch to English to help her English?+

No, and switching usually makes things worse. The Primary Years Programme treats the home language as an asset, and schools are expected to support mother-tongue development rather than suppress it. A child who understands a concept in Gujarati already owns that concept and only needs the English label for it, which is fast work for a tutor. Dropping the home language removes the richest vocabulary the child has, and it often costs confidence at the same time. What does help is a tutor who can bridge both languages in a sentence, plus reading aloud at home in whichever language the adult reads best.

What do IB tuition fees in Mumbai depend on for a PYP English tutor?+

Five things, and none of them is a published price list. Board and level matter, because a PYP language tutor and a Diploma Programme Physics tutor are not in the same band. Subject scarcity matters: a mother-tongue or additional-language specialist in a zone with few of them is harder to book than a general primary tutor. Travel distance matters, because a tutor crossing from Khar West to Powai is giving up a second booking that evening. Session length and frequency matter, and so does whether you want home tuition or online. Ask any tutor to quote the full weekly cost including travel before you commit to a term.

Will a tutor travel to our building in Kharghar for a weekday evening slot?+

Usually yes, if the tutor is already based in Navi Mumbai. We match Kharghar with Belapur and Nerul rather than pulling someone across the creek, because a tutor coming from the island city for a 7pm lesson along the Sion Panvel Highway or over the Atal Setu keeps it up for a few weeks and then starts rescheduling. Palm Beach Road makes node-to-node travel genuinely quick, which is why node matching works here. If there is nobody suitable in your node in a given month we will say so and offer online, rather than booking a commute that collapses in week five.

Our society gate needs a visitor pass every time. How does that work for a weekly home tutor?+

Set up a standing entry on day one and it stops being a problem. Give the security desk the tutor's name, the day and the time, and ask whether your society issues a recurring pass for service visitors, which most of the larger complexes in Powai, Thane and Navi Mumbai do. Without it the tutor spends ten minutes at the desk every week and the lesson shrinks to fit. If your building requires a resident to approve each entry through an app, tell the tutor which app it is and who in the family will be reachable at that hour.

Does a parent need to be at home during a home tuition session?+

An adult should be in the flat, but not in the room. At PYP ages a parent in the doorway changes how the child answers questions, and the tutor loses the honest version of what the child can do alone. The arrangement that works is to stay within earshot for the first two or three sessions, then step back to the last five minutes, which is when the tutor should tell you what happened. Ask for that handover every week. It is more informative than a monthly report, and it is where you catch a drifting arrangement early enough to fix it.

Does online tutoring actually work for a seven-year-old?+

It works for some things and not others. Vocabulary review, reading aloud, a plan check before a presentation and short frequent sessions all transfer to a screen. Extended writing, handwriting and a child who needs physical redirection do not. A PYP child also needs an adult to start the call and then leave, which is more work for you than a home session. Online makes most sense when the specialist you need is not in your zone, during the monsoon weeks, or when Ghodbunder Road or Peddar Road at 6pm makes a reliable weekly home slot impossible. Most of our PYP families end up hybrid.

Four weeks in and I see no change. What should I do now?+

Tell us in week four with one specific example rather than waiting for the term to end. Then check what you are measuring, because at four weeks the honest signals are habits: does the child pick up a book unprompted, use a planning sheet, stop resisting writing time. If none of those has moved, the match is probably wrong, and we will put it to the tutor once since a surprising share of these turn out to be a slot problem, a child who is exhausted at 7pm, or a pace mismatch. If that conversation does not fix it, you get a replacement profile and the new tutor inherits the plan.

The tutor is competent but my child does not like her. Can we change?+

Yes, and you should say so early rather than hoping it settles down. At primary ages the relationship is most of the method. A child who dreads the session will not read between sessions, and reading between sessions is where the progress actually lives. Ask for the change in the first few weeks. We send a replacement profile, pass on the portfolio, the previous plan and a note on what did not land, and ask the new tutor to skip a full baseline so your child is not assessed twice in a month. You do not owe the first tutor an explanation.

My child joined an IB PYP school in Juhu from CBSE mid-year. Where does a tutor start?+

With what the new school is asking for, which is almost never what the old one drilled. Children arriving from CBSE or ICSE usually have solid grammar and spelling and no experience of being asked for an opinion about a text, choosing their own reading, or presenting an inquiry to a class. An IB PYP English tutor in Mumbai will typically spend the first fortnight on exactly that: inference questions, short opinion writing with reasons attached, and the vocabulary of the unit of inquiry the class is already halfway through. The grammar does not need redoing. What needs building is independence, and a child who has never chosen a book needs help choosing one.

Find your Mumbai tutor

Send us the grade, the school and the two evenings that work. We come back with two or three verified profiles, each with what they have taught and the slots they can actually hold, and you speak to the one you like before anything is booked. The first session happens at your home, or online if you prefer, and you get a written four-week plan after it. If the match is wrong, tell us and we replace the tutor.
