How does IB Gram find an IB PYP English home tutor in Mumbai?

Send one message with your child's grade, your building or area, and the two evenings in the week that are genuinely free. IB Gram shortlists two or three Primary Years Programme (PYP) English specialists who already teach inside your corridor, sends you their profiles, and you pick who comes to the door. Nothing is booked until you have spoken to the tutor yourself.

The corridor part is the whole trick. A literacy tutor who lives in Chembur and teaches in Chembur will hold a Tuesday six o'clock slot for three terms. The same tutor sent to Kandivali will hold it for five weeks, then start asking to move the slot later, then start cancelling on the days the Western Express Highway is standing still. So the shortlist is built from travel time outwards rather than from a ranked list of profiles inwards. We look at who is already within a reliable thirty-minute door-to-door reach of your flat at the hour you actually need, and only then at who among them has taught English inside units of inquiry.

What we ask you for is small and specific: the grade, the school, the title of the current unit of inquiry, the last report, and one page of your child's own recent writing, photographed on your phone. That last item does more work than everything else combined. A paragraph a seven-year-old wrote unaided shows letter formation, sentence control, spelling patterns, vocabulary reach and stamina in about fifteen seconds of reading, and it tells the tutor whether the first session should start with a book or with a pencil.

If nobody in your corridor fits, we say so rather than sending a tutor who will quit in a month. Sometimes the honest answer is a hybrid arrangement, a different evening, or a Saturday morning when the roads are kinder. An IB home tutor in Mumbai who is wrong about the subject can be replaced easily. One who is wrong about the distance will fail quietly, and the first you hear of it is a child who has stopped looking forward to Thursday.

  • 1. Send your child's grade, your area and two evenings that are genuinely free
  • 2. We shortlist PYP English tutors already travelling inside your corridor
  • 3. You read the profiles and speak to the tutor before anything is booked
  • 4. The first home session runs a reading check and a writing sample
  • 5. You get session notes and a named focus for the next four weeks

Where English sits inside the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP)

English in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) is not a subject with a textbook and a chapter list. It is a set of language strands, oral, written and visual, taught through units of inquiry that sit under the transdisciplinary themes. A child reads, writes, listens, speaks, views and presents in service of an inquiry about migration or materials or systems, and the language outcomes are assessed inside that work rather than in a separate English lesson.

This is why a PYP transdisciplinary learning tutor in Mumbai has to read before teaching. The unit planner tells her what the class is inquiring into this half-term, what the central idea is, which lines of inquiry the teacher has opened, and which language skills the teacher has attached to it. A tutor who ignores all of that and runs a generic comprehension worksheet is teaching a different subject from the one your child is reported on. A PYP transdisciplinary learning IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) tutor Mumbai families keep for more than one term is the one who asks for the planner in the first conversation, before quoting a rate.

The learner profile runs alongside the strands. Your child is being described as a communicator, an inquirer, a thinker and a risk-taker, and those words appear on reports where parents expect marks. English support that only lifts spelling accuracy will not move a report saying your child is reluctant to present her thinking to the class. In the early PYP years the weight sits on phonics, decoding, letter formation and talking in full sentences. By the upper years it has shifted towards structuring a piece of writing, saying where an idea came from, and presenting to an audience, which is what the final-year exhibition eventually draws on. The exhibition has its own pages on this site; what matters here is that the English habits it needs are built two years earlier.

Schools in Mumbai also differ in how formally they report PYP language. Some send home a strand-by-strand continuum, some send a narrative comment, and some hold a student-led conference where your child explains her own portfolio to you. Bring whichever of those you have to the first session, because it is the only written record of what the school thinks the gap is. The IB revises its language scope and sequence on its own cycle, so confirm the current structure with your school's PYP coordinator rather than trusting any summary, including this one.

  • Oral, written and visual strands rather than a single English syllabus
  • Language outcomes assessed inside units of inquiry, not separately
  • Transdisciplinary themes set the reading and writing context each half-term
  • Learner profile attributes appear on reports where parents expect marks
  • Upper PYP shifts from decoding towards structure, sourcing and presenting

What does a PYP English home tutor actually do in your flat?

The first twenty minutes are diagnostic and they happen out loud. The tutor hands your child a book slightly above her comfort level, listens to her read a page, and marks what went wrong: a substituted word, a skipped line, a guess made from the first letter, a full stop read straight through. Then a short written task at the same table, unaided.

Reading aloud is the one check that cannot be faked and cannot be done well through a laptop microphone. A child who reads accurately but flatly is decoding, not comprehending. A child who reads with expression and then cannot say what happened has been coached on fluency alone. A child who self-corrects without being told has the habit that matters most, and it is worth more than two reading levels. Running these checks in your living room means the tutor also hears what the room does to the reading: a television two metres away, a younger sibling who needs answering, a cook in the kitchen at the same hour every week. Those things are fixable, and nobody fixes them from a screen.

Writing is where PYP transdisciplinary learning home classes Mumbai parents book usually show the quickest visible change, because the problems are concrete. Sentences that run on for a whole paragraph. Every sentence starting with the same word. No paragraph breaks, because nobody has ever shown her where one goes. Vocabulary stuck at nice and good because the richer word was never said aloud in the house. A tutor at your dining table works on a real piece rather than an exercise: the actual reflection the actual unit of inquiry wants this week, drafted, read back, cut and rewritten. Spelling gets taught as patterns on physical cards that stay in the house between visits, not as a list to memorise on Thursday and forget by Monday.

Oral work is the part most online arrangements quietly drop. Presenting is assessed in the PYP, and a nine-year-old who mumbles at the floor in class will not practise standing up straight in front of a webcam. In a home session she presents to one adult in her own sitting room, then to a parent, then to a parent and a grandparent, which is the only progression that reliably works. Handwriting and pencil grip get seen and corrected rather than guessed at, and so does the sitting position, which is the single most common thing a screen-only tutor never notices.

  • A running reading check with a book above comfort level, monthly
  • One real piece of unit writing drafted, read back and rewritten
  • Spelling taught as patterns on cards that stay in the house
  • Presenting rehearsed to one adult, then to the whole family
  • Pencil grip, letter formation and sitting position corrected in person

Mumbai home tuition coverage, zone by zone

IB Gram matches PYP English tutors across all six of the city's teaching zones, and the match is made inside the zone almost every time. South Mumbai is dense and short-distance but slow: a tutor crossing from Worli to Colaba covers a handful of kilometres and can still lose most of an hour to the Peddar Road and Haji Ali signals in the evening peak. Families in Cuffe Parade, Walkeshwar, Fort and Tardeo are matched inside the island rather than brought down from the suburbs, using the Western Line out of Churchgate and Grant Road, the Harbour Line towards Dockyard, Metro Line 3 between Cuffe Parade and BKC, and the Coastal Road.

The Western Suburbs run north to south along the Western Express Highway and the Western Line, so a tutor going from Bandra to Andheri is quick off-peak and painful at six in the evening. Matching along the line works: Khar West to Santacruz West, Malad to Kandivali, Borivali to Dahisar. Matching across it does not. Metro Line 1 from Versova through Andheri to Ghatkopar and Metro Lines 2A and 7 from Dahisar down to Gundavali have made pairings workable that were not workable a few years ago, and a tutor who uses the Metro rather than the Link Road is the one whose arrival time stops being a variable in your week.

The Central Suburbs sit on the Central Line and the Eastern Express Highway, with Powai and Chandivali hanging off JVLR in between. Powai is the odd one out: it is physically central and has no station of its own, so tutors reach Hiranandani Gardens and Chandivali by road from Andheri East, Kanjurmarg or Ghatkopar, and the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road carries the crossing from the west. The Eastern Suburbs stretch from Chembur and Govandi up through Vikhroli and Bhandup to Mulund on the Central and Harbour lines, and the Eastern Freeway makes the island city reachable from Chembur and Wadala far faster than the map suggests. IB PYP English home tuition in Mumbai is easiest to schedule in these two zones for exactly that reason, because the tutor pool and the school pool overlap along the same roads.

Navi Mumbai is planned in nodes, Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar and Panvel, each a short drive from the next on Palm Beach Road and the Sion-Panvel Highway, with the Harbour Line, the Trans-Harbour Line from Thane and the Belapur to Pendhar Metro underneath. Tutors are matched node to node, because pulling one across the creek from the island city for a weekday evening lesson rarely survives a full term even now that the Atal Setu has shortened the drive. Thane spreads west to east from the station across Pokhran Road, Majiwada and Ghodbunder Road, and the Ghodbunder stretch sets the schedule: a tutor living near Thane station reaches Kasarvadavali in twenty minutes off-peak and nearly an hour in the evening. When parents search IB tutors near me Mumbai, what they usually mean is near enough to be reliable in the rain, and that is the only definition we work to.

  • South Mumbai matched inside the island, Colaba and Cuffe Parade to Worli
  • Western Suburbs matched along the line, Khar West to Santacruz West
  • Powai and Chandivali reached by road off JVLR, with no station
  • Navi Mumbai matched node to node, Vashi and Nerul to Panvel
  • Thane slots set by the Ghodbunder Road evening peak

The Mumbai school calendar that sets your PYP English timetable

Mumbai's IB primary schools run June to April in three terms, with the heaviest reporting in October, December and March. That shape decides when English support helps and when it only adds pressure. Families at Ecole Mondiale World School in Juhu, Oberoi International School at Goregaon East on JVLR, Dhirubhai Ambani International School in BKC, Bombay International School at Babulnath and D.Y. Patil International School in Nerul deal with the same rhythm, whatever the differences in their reporting language.

June and July are the cheapest months to start and the ones parents skip. The new unit of inquiry has just opened, no report is imminent, and the monsoon has not yet eaten anyone's Tuesday. By mid-October, when the first proper report and the first student-led conference land together, a child who was already a reluctant writer is a reluctant writer with a comment about it in writing, and the work now has to be done under the eye of the school. December brings the mid-year report and the long holiday, which is the best block in the year for reading volume and the worst for routine. March is the end of the PYP year, portfolio season and the final-year exhibition presentations, and by then whatever reading habit exists is the one you have.

The monsoon is a scheduling fact rather than an excuse. Between late June and September a tutor coming to Chembur or Thane in the evening will be badly late once or twice in a term, and the honest arrangement is a named backup slot on a weekend morning rather than a cancelled week. IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with any school named on this page; naming a school here describes the calendar and the board pathway its families follow, nothing more. We also do not guarantee grades or report comments. What a tutor can change is how much of the work your child can do without an adult sitting next to her, and in the PYP that is most of what a report is actually measuring.

Transitions matter more in the PYP than parents expect. A child moving from a state-board or CBSE primary into Grade 3 or Grade 4 of an IB school in Mumbai, Maharashtra arrives able to spell and unable to write a paragraph about her own thinking, because nobody has ever asked her for one. Those children need two terms of inquiry-shaped writing before the school's reports start to read like the rest of the class, and the first term of that is mostly unlearning the habit of waiting to be told the right answer.

  • A June to April year with reports in October, December and March
  • June and July are the easiest months to start a new tutor
  • The December holiday is the best block in the year for reading volume
  • March brings portfolios and the final-year exhibition presentations
  • Monsoon evenings need a named weekend backup slot agreed in June

Home, online or hybrid for IB PYP English in Mumbai

Home tutoring is the default for PYP English and should be. A child of six to eleven needs an adult in the room, a book she can hold, a pencil she can be corrected on, and a session she cannot minimise into another tab. Booking an IB PYP English home tutor in Mumbai for a fixed weekday evening also solves the thing no app solves, which is that the session happens whether or not your child feels like it that day.

Online has two real uses and one honest weakness. The uses are reach and continuity. An IB online tutor in Mumbai can be the specialist in Thane your Colaba search would never have produced, and an online slot survives a travelling parent, a cancelled driver or a week when the child is unwell but well enough to read. The weakness is that primary literacy is physical. A microphone flattens exactly the errors the tutor needs to hear: substitutions, hesitations, a breath taken in the wrong place. A tutor cannot see the pencil, cannot turn the book, cannot move the chair. For a nine-year-old working on the structure of a piece of writing, a good online session is worth most of a home session. For a six-year-old on phonics it is worth about half.

Hybrid is what most PYP families in Mumbai end up doing, usually by accident, and it is worth designing on purpose instead. One home visit a week for the reading check, the writing piece and the oral practice. One short online session midweek for the homework your child would otherwise do badly alone. Everything else by message, including the photograph of the page she got stuck on. It costs less than two home visits because travel is the expensive part of a Mumbai evening, and it stops the week's work collapsing into a single long block on Saturday.

The trade-off to say out loud is scheduling. A home slot is harder to move and easier to keep. An online slot is easier to move and therefore moves, and a slot that moves twice a month has stopped being a routine. If your family's evenings are genuinely unpredictable, take the home slot early in the week rather than the online slot late in it, and keep the same day for a full term before judging whether the arrangement works.

  • Home first in Grades 1 to 3, where literacy is still physical
  • Online widens the pool when your corridor has no PYP English specialist
  • Hybrid pairs one home visit with one short midweek online session
  • Travel distance, not the hour, is what makes an evening slot expensive
  • A slot that moves twice a month has stopped being a routine

How is an IB PYP English home tutor in Mumbai checked before you meet them?

Identity and address are verified from a government photo document, the highest qualification is checked against the certificate, and any claim of IB experience is checked by asking for the school, the years, the programme and the role. A tutor who cannot produce a unit planner she has genuinely worked from does not reach your shortlist for a PYP English brief.

That last filter removes more applicants than the paperwork does. A great deal of English tutoring in Mumbai is excellent CBSE or ICSE tutoring with the labels changed. Those tutors lift grammar accuracy and comprehension speed quickly, and they are the wrong hire for a child whose report is written in terms of language strands and learner profile attributes. The screening conversation for every IB private tutor Mumbai parents are shown includes a question with no neat answer: what would you do with a unit on migration if the child reads two years below her grade. The reply separates the people who have taught in an IB primary from the people who have read about one.

There are four things only you can check, and they take one conversation. Ask the tutor to run a reading check in front of you in the first session and to tell you afterwards what she heard rather than how it went. Ask what she will send you after each visit. Ask what happens in the week she has a wedding in Pune. And be wary of any tutor who offers a guaranteed grade or a guaranteed reading level by a fixed date, because no honest teacher of a seven-year-old will promise that. For home visits, ask for a photo identity you can leave with your society gate, and keep sessions in a room with a door that stays open.

Every IB PYP English home tutor in Mumbai on the platform also agrees to a plain replacement rule, because screening is not prediction. If the fit is wrong after two sessions you say so and we move, without an argument about notice. The pattern we see repeatedly is a mismatch of pace rather than of knowledge: a careful tutor with an impatient child, or a brisk tutor with a child who needs to be allowed to finish her own sentence.

  • Government photo identity and address verified before a profile is shown
  • Qualification checked, and the IB school, years and role confirmed
  • Asked to produce a unit planner she has genuinely taught from
  • You hear the first reading check and the findings in your own room
  • Replacement after two sessions if the fit is wrong, with no notice argument

Why the home visit changes what a PYP English tutor can see

The argument for home tuition in primary English is not comfort, it is information. What an IB PYP English home tutor in Mumbai sees in forty minutes at your dining table is a list a screen cannot produce: which books are actually in the house and whether any of them sit at her level, whether the reading corner is a shelf or a cupboard nobody opens, whether the table she writes at is the table the family eats at twenty minutes later.

Here is the kind of thing that only surfaces in person. A Grade 3 child in Powai was described by two previous tutors as inattentive. The home tutor's second visit happened to fall at seven rather than six, and the television in the same room was on. The problem was never attention. A Grade 2 child in Khar West read well below her level from the school reader and fluently off the tutor's phone, because the print was small and nobody had checked her eyes. A Grade 5 child in Vashi wrote three lines in forty minutes for a tutor and two pages for her grandmother, because her grandmother asked her what happened next and the tutor asked her for a reflection. None of those three diagnoses can be made from a video call, and all three were made inside the first fortnight of a home arrangement.

The second thing the visit buys is the parent handover. Five minutes at the end of a home session, with your child present, is the most useful teaching a parent gets all week: this is the error she keeps making, this is the sentence to say when she stops, this is the book to read next, do not correct her spelling while she is still drafting. Families searching for the best IB tutor in Mumbai are usually looking for that handover without knowing it, and the tutor who gives it will change more in a term than the tutor with the longer profile.

The honest cost of the home visit is money and rigidity. Travel is paid for in either rupees or in a later slot, and a tutor who crosses a zone to reach you is pricing in the Western Express Highway whether or not it appears as a line on the invoice. In exchange you get a session that starts on time more often than not, a reading check nobody can fudge, and a weekly adult who notices that the pencil case has no sharpener in it. Over a term in the PYP, that is most of the difference between a tutor and an arrangement.

  • The tutor sees the real books, the light, the chair and the noise
  • Reading errors heard live rather than flattened by a microphone
  • A five-minute parent handover at the end of every visit
  • Physical cards and books left in the house between sessions
  • Travel is the real cost of a home slot, not the hour itself

What progress looks like at four weeks, one term and one year

At four weeks you should see three things and no more: a routine your child expects, a baseline you can read, and one strand that has moved. The strand is usually the mechanical one, because letter formation, full stops and capital letters respond quickly to being noticed every single week. Reading level and writing stamina do not move in four weeks, and a tutor who reports that they have is describing a different child.

At one term, which in Mumbai means roughly the stretch between two reports, the markers change. She picks up a book without being told to. She writes a paragraph without asking what to write. She can say what her unit of inquiry is about in her own words, which is close to what her teacher is really assessing. Spelling accuracy has risen on the patterns that were taught and not on the ones that were not, which is how you know the teaching was specific rather than general. If none of those four has shifted after a full term of weekly sessions, the problem is the match or the method, and it is worth changing one of them rather than adding a second subject on another evening.

At one year the test is transfer. Does work done without the tutor look like work done with her. Do the school's comments change register, from reluctance and support towards independence and initiative. Does she present to her class without being pushed into it. An IB home tuition in Mumbai arrangement that has worked for a year makes itself gradually unnecessary, and a good tutor will say so before you do, usually by suggesting a fortnightly slot instead of a weekly one.

The limits are worth stating plainly. We cannot guarantee a grade, a reading level or a report comment, and anyone in this city who does is selling something other than teaching. A tutor cannot undo a bedtime at eleven o'clock, cannot replace being read to at home in any language, and cannot make a child care in nine months about a unit the school has had three years to make dull. Children also go backwards for a fortnight in the middle of real progress, almost always just after something harder has been introduced, and the right response is to wait two weeks rather than change the tutor.

  • Four weeks: a routine, a readable baseline, one mechanical strand moving
  • One term: she chooses a book and starts a paragraph unprompted
  • One year: work done alone looks like work done with the tutor
  • Report language shifts from support towards independence
  • Two-week dips are normal when harder work has just arrived

Starting IB home tuition in Mumbai: what to have ready

Four things make the first session twice as useful: the most recent report, two pages of your child's unaided writing, the title of the current unit of inquiry, and a cleared table with a chair at the right height. A home tutor for PYP transdisciplinary learning Mumbai parents book in June will ask for all four in the first message rather than in the fourth week.

On cost, what we will tell you is what it depends on rather than a number that would be wrong by area and by month. IB tuition fees in Mumbai move with the programme and the level, because a final-year PYP brief carrying exhibition-adjacent writing is not priced like Grade 1 phonics. They move with subject scarcity, because PYP-trained English specialists are thinner on the ground than Diploma Programme (DP) Maths tutors. They move with travel distance and the hour, because a seven o'clock slot across a zone costs the tutor an unpaid hour of road. They move with session length and frequency, since two shorter visits a week are rarely twice the price of one longer one, and with whether materials and marking between sessions are included. Ask for the structure in writing before the first visit, and ask what a session cancelled at short notice costs.

The first session itself follows a fixed shape. A reading check out loud, a short piece of writing at the table, a look at the last report and the current unit planner, ten minutes of actual teaching so your child meets the tutor as a teacher rather than an interviewer, and five minutes with you at the end. You should finish it holding three things: what the tutor heard, what the first four weeks will work on, and what you are being asked to do differently in the house.

Practical arrangements take one message. Give the society gate the tutor's name and a photograph so weekly entry stops being a negotiation, agree a backup weekend slot for the monsoon weeks, and agree how a missed session is handled before one is missed. Send your brief with your area, your child's grade and two possible evenings, and the shortlist comes back as profiles rather than a sales call.

  • Have the last report, two writing samples and the unit title ready
  • Clear a table with a chair at the right height, away from the television
  • Register the tutor's name and photograph at your society gate once
  • Agree a monsoon backup slot and a missed-session rule upfront
  • Send your area, your child's grade and two workable evenings
FAQs

Mumbai tutoring — questions parents ask

What does an IB PYP English home tutor in Mumbai actually charge for?+

You are paying for three separate things: teaching time, preparation and travel. IB tuition fees in Mumbai vary with the programme and level, the scarcity of the specialism, the distance the tutor covers and the hour you want. A PYP English brief that involves reading the unit planner and marking a draft between visits carries preparation that a drill-based arrangement does not. Travel is the item parents underestimate, because a tutor crossing from Andheri to Worli for a seven o'clock slot spends an unpaid hour on the road. Ask for the rate, the session length, the cancellation rule and whether materials are included, in writing, before the first visit.

Can a tutor travel to Kharghar or Panvel for an evening slot?+

Yes, if the tutor already lives in Navi Mumbai. Kharghar and Panvel are matched node to node from Vashi, Nerul and Belapur along Palm Beach Road and the Sion-Panvel Highway, and that arrangement holds for a full term. What does not hold is a tutor brought across the creek from the island city or the Western Suburbs for a weekday six o'clock slot. The Atal Setu has shortened that drive considerably and it is still the wrong structure: the tutor is fine for three weeks, then starts asking to move to Saturday. If your node genuinely has no PYP English specialist, a hybrid week beats a long commute.

How does a tutor get through my society gate every week?+

Register the tutor once rather than negotiating weekly. Most Mumbai societies accept a standing entry for a named visitor with a photo identity on file, which is why IB Gram asks every home tutor to carry a government photo document. Give the gate the name, the day and the time window, and tell your own security desk rather than relying on the app alone. In towers using a visitor-management app, add the tutor as a recurring visitor so approval does not depend on someone answering a phone mid-session. Where a society insists on a fresh pass each visit, build ten minutes into the slot so the lesson does not lose that time.

Do I need to sit in the room during a home session?+

No, and for most children you should not. Sit in for the first session so you hear the reading check and the tutor's findings, then move to the next room with the door open. A seven-year-old performs for a parent in the room and stops trying things she might get wrong, which is the opposite of what a PYP English session needs. What you should keep is the last five minutes, with your child present, where the tutor names the specific error and the specific sentence to use when your child stalls over homework. For a very young child with a short attention span, staying nearby occasionally helps.

My child reads fluently but writes very little. Is that an English problem?+

It is usually a structure problem rather than a language one. Fluent readers who write three lines generally have no model for what a paragraph is, no plan to work from, and a strong sense that writing is a thing you get marked down for. A PYP English tutor works in the opposite order from school: she gets the ideas out in speech first, writes them down as your child says them, then hands the pencil back. The unit of inquiry supplies the content so nothing has to be invented. Expect stamina to move over a term rather than a fortnight, and expect handwriting to get worse before it gets better.

Is online tuition good enough for PYP English?+

For upper PYP writing work, nearly; for early reading, no. An IB online tutor in Mumbai can teach paragraph structure, planning, vocabulary and editing well, and can reach a specialist your own area does not have. What a screen cannot do is hear a decoding error accurately, see the pencil grip, turn a physical book, or let a child rehearse presenting to a person in a room. Children in Grades 1 to 3 also treat a screen as something that can be half-watched. The workable arrangement for most Mumbai families is one home visit for reading and oral work plus one short online session midweek for the written piece.

What happens if the tutor is not working out after three weeks?+

Tell us and we replace the tutor, with no argument about notice. Say what is wrong in one line, because the detail decides who comes next: too fast, too gentle, no written notes, the child is bored, the slot keeps moving. Most mismatches at three weeks are about pace rather than knowledge, so the replacement brief becomes specific instead of a fresh guess. We will ask you to keep the same day and the same slot if you can, because the routine is the part that took three weeks to build. If the problem is the hour rather than the person, changing the time is faster than changing the tutor.

We live off Ghodbunder Road in Thane. Will the monsoon commute cancel sessions?+

Some evenings, yes, and the fix is a named backup slot rather than optimism. Ghodbunder Road sets the schedule in Thane: a tutor near the station reaches Kasarvadavali in twenty minutes off-peak and nearly an hour in the evening peak, and a July downpour makes that unpredictable. Match inside Thane rather than pulling a tutor from Mulund across the Eastern Express Highway, take the earliest workable evening slot, and agree a Saturday morning fallback in June before the rain starts. A tutor living in your own corridor loses a session or two across a monsoon; one travelling across the city loses the whole arrangement.

How long before I see progress in my child's reading?+

Four weeks for the habit, one term for the level. In the first month you should see her picking up a book without an argument and self-correcting when she misreads, both of which a tutor can report specifically rather than as encouragement. A measurable move in reading level takes a term of weekly sessions plus reading at home on the other six days, and the home reading is the larger half of that. We cannot guarantee a reading level by a particular date, and anyone who offers one is quoting a number they have no way to produce. Ask your tutor which errors she heard this month against last month.

Should I ask for a PYP-trained teacher or will any English tutor do?+

Ask for PYP experience specifically. A strong CBSE or ICSE English tutor will lift grammar accuracy and comprehension speed, and will still be teaching a different subject from the one your child's report describes, because PYP language outcomes are assessed inside units of inquiry against strands and learner profile attributes. The practical test is to ask a candidate what she would do with a unit on migration if the child reads two years below her grade. Someone who has taught in an IB primary answers with the unit planner and the language strand. Someone who has not answers with a worksheet level and a weekly test.

Can the same tutor help with the units of inquiry as well as English?+

Yes, and in the PYP that separation barely exists. The language work and the inquiry work are the same work: the reflection, the research notes, the presentation and the write-up are all places where English is assessed. A PYP English tutor should be reading the current unit planner and building the session's reading and writing around it rather than running a parallel syllabus of her own. What one tutor should not try to carry is every subject at once. If the real gap is mathematical thinking or science vocabulary, that is a separate brief and often a different tutor, and those requests have their own pages here.

My child is in her final PYP year. Should we start English support now or wait?+

Start now, in June or July, not in January. The final PYP year ends in portfolio season and the exhibition presentations, and both draw on writing structure and oral confidence that take two terms to build rather than two months. Starting in the first term means the tutor works on habits while there is still room in the week; starting in March means managing a deadline with whatever habits already exist. Mumbai schools also hold student-led conferences mid-year, which is a useful external checkpoint on whether the work is landing. The exhibition itself has its own dedicated page on this site.

Find your Mumbai tutor

Send one message with your area, your child's grade and two evenings that genuinely work. You get back two or three profiles of PYP English tutors who already travel inside your corridor, with their IB school experience and what they would work on first. Speak to the one you like, agree the slot and the society gate arrangement, and the first home session runs a reading check and a writing sample at your own table.
