IB private tuition in Mumbai usually means one tutor, one student, at home. Sometimes two students together works better: Theory of Knowledge needs an argument, Language B needs a partner to speak to. This page covers when a private pair beats one-to-one, the conditions it has to meet, and how home tuition for two is arranged across Mumbai.

Families asking about IB private tuition in Mumbai almost always picture the same hour: one tutor, one student, the dining table cleared, the bedroom door shut. That is what we arrange most of the time, and for most subjects it is the right call. We also ask one question that enquiries rarely get asked, which is whether a second student in the room would make that hour work harder. For a Theory of Knowledge (TOK) exhibition or a Language B individual oral, the honest answer is often yes.
The sequence does not change. 1. You send the subject list, the programme year, the level for each subject, the school, your pin code and the two evening slots that genuinely survive a bad traffic day. 2. We look at whether pairing is even possible, which means another family in the same subject at the same level, within roughly a grade of your child, inside the same pin code or ideally the same tower. 3. We shortlist tutors who have taught that exact component, then ask each one directly whether they will teach two students in one session, because a tutor who is good with one student is not automatically good with two. 4. The first session happens one-to-one whatever the answer was, and a pair starts in week two or three at the earliest.
That order exists because pairing is a teaching decision and not a timetable convenience. A tutor who has watched your daughter argue her way through a knowledge question for fifty minutes can say whether she needs an opponent or silence. Nobody reading an enquiry form can. If the tutor says keep it private, we keep it private and the conversation ends there, which is the opposite of how a scheduling-led match works.
IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with any school named on this page, and we do not guarantee grades for a student working alone or alongside somebody else. We will also arrange a home tutor for all IB and IGCSE subjects across Mumbai without a second family involved at all, which is how the large majority of these requests end.
A pair works only when both students sit the same paper. That means the same programme, the same subject and the same level: two Diploma Programme (DP) students in Higher Level (HL) Physics, or two International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) students both entered for Extended Mathematics. An HL student sitting beside a Standard Level (SL) student is not a pair. It is one student being taught while the other listens to content they will never be examined on.
In the DP the level split is concrete rather than cosmetic. Mathematics Analysis and Approaches has a Paper 3 at HL and none at SL, so an HL and an SL student cannot share revision in the term when Paper 3 technique is the whole point. HL sciences carry additional higher-level content inside the same papers. Language B at HL studies literary works that SL does not touch. Pair across any of those lines and half the hour is wasted for one of the two students, usually the one who is quieter about it.
IGCSE splits the same way through Core and Extended. In Cambridge Mathematics 0580 a Core candidate sits Papers 1 and 3 while an Extended candidate sits Papers 2 and 4, and the grade ceilings differ. Two Core students pair. Two Extended students pair. One of each does not, however close their marks look on a report card. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE entries follow the same logic: check the tier and the paper codes before anybody mentions sharing a tutor.
Lower down, the Middle Years Programme (MYP) pairs better than parents expect in MYP 4 and 5, because the criteria reward argument and reflection and a second student gives both children something to push against. The Primary Years Programme (PYP) pairs badly. Two eight-year-olds in one session produce a play date with a worksheet on the table. We arrange all IB and IGCSE subjects home classes in Mumbai, and the pairing question sensibly applies to only a handful of them.
Four, broadly. Theory of Knowledge, because a knowledge claim with no counterclaim is just an opinion written at length. Language B, because the individual oral is a conversation and a student needs somebody other than a paid adult to have it with. Language A Paper 2, because comparison is learned by comparing out loud. And the Group 4 sciences, where explaining a mechanism to a peer exposes the hole in the explanation faster than any question a tutor asks.
The TOK exhibition shows it cleanly. A student picks an internal assessment prompt, chooses three objects and writes a commentary linking each object to the prompt and to an area of knowledge. Working alone, almost every student defends the first object they got attached to. In a pair, the tutor can set the two students to attack each other's object choices before either writes anything, and the weak link, the object that only connects to the prompt if you squint hard, falls out in ten minutes instead of surviving to a marked first draft.
Language B is the strongest case of the four. A student who has only ever practised against their own tutor learns one accent, one speaking speed and one set of follow-up questions. Two students at the same level can run the stimulus-based section at each other while the tutor listens and marks against the criteria, which roughly doubles the speaking minutes in an hour and makes the hesitations real. A Group 4 topic discussion behaves the same way: two students arguing about whether a graph supports a conclusion is a science lesson, while one student agreeing with a tutor is not.
The limit is firm and worth stating plainly. Internal Assessment (IA) work and the Extended Essay (EE) are individual. A Physics IA, a Mathematics exploration, a Business Management research project and an EE are all assessed as the student's own work, and two students designing the same investigation at the same table produce drafts that read alike to a coordinator who is looking for exactly that. We keep IA and EE hours one-to-one even when the teaching hours are shared, because a paired IA is an academic-honesty conversation waiting to happen rather than a saving. Subject choice across both boards, the HL and SL decision and the Core or Extended decision belong in the first conversation rather than the fourth, and they are what all IB and IGCSE subjects home tuition in Mumbai covers before anybody opens a past paper.
IB private tuition in Mumbai is arranged on travel time before anything else, and the six zones of Mumbai, Maharashtra each behave differently. Pairing is a geography problem before it is a teaching one. South Mumbai is short on distance and long on signals: a tutor crossing from Worli to Colaba covers eight kilometres and can still lose forty minutes at Peddar Road and Haji Ali in the evening peak, so a pair drawn from Cuffe Parade and Walkeshwar holds while one drawn from Colaba and Tardeo does not. The Western Line, the Harbour Line, Metro Line 3 from Cuffe Parade to BKC and the Coastal Road all matter less on the island than those two signals do.
The Western Suburbs run north to south along the Western Line and the Western Express Highway, so pairs form along the line and almost never across it: Khar West with Santacruz, Juhu with Vile Parle, Malad with Kandivali East, Borivali with Dahisar East. Metro Lines 2A and 7 have made a Dahisar to Andheri hop realistic for a tutor in a way Link Road never was. The Central Suburbs sit on the Central Line and the Eastern Express Highway with Powai and Chandivali hanging off JVLR, and Powai has no station of its own, so tutors arrive by road from Andheri East, Kanjurmarg or Ghatkopar and Powai pairs are usually internal to Powai.
The Eastern Suburbs run from Chembur and Govandi through Vikhroli and Bhandup to Mulund West on the Central and Harbour lines, and the Eastern Freeway makes a Chembur tutor reachable from Wadala and Fort faster than the map suggests, while the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road carries the one long weekly trip a tutor will agree to. Navi Mumbai is nodal: Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar and Panvel strung along Palm Beach Road and the Sion-Panvel Highway, with the Trans-Harbour Line and now the Atal Setu. Pairs there are matched node to node, two Seawoods families rather than one in Nerul and one in Kharghar. Thane spreads from the station across Pokhran Road, Majiwada and Ghodbunder Road, and Ghodbunder sets every schedule: Kasarvadavali is twenty minutes off-peak and close to an hour at seven in the evening. Searches phrased as IB tutors near me in Mumbai are asking about exactly this.
The most practical pair is two families in one building. One gate entry, one lift, no second commute, and if the session runs twenty minutes over nobody is sitting on the Western Express Highway because of it. Hiranandani Gardens in Powai, the Lodha towers along Kolshet Road in Thane, Seawoods in Nerul and the Oberoi Garden City cluster on JVLR commonly have several IB and IGCSE families in a single tower, often at the same school and in the same year group. The message that actually finds a partner names the subject and the level in the building parent group rather than the word tuition. A clubhouse study room also works for a pair where a child's bedroom does not.
Yes, if the calendars do not collide. Two students in the same subject at the same level can share a tutor across two schools as long as their internal deadlines fall in roughly the same weeks. When one student's Physics IA draft is due the fortnight the other school has gone on study leave, the pair quietly becomes two half-sessions and both families pay for the overlap.
The Mumbai school year opens in June. MYP criterion tasks start landing from late August. October and November bring the first serious DP internal assessment drafts. December and January are the hardest stretch of the year: a DP2 student can have an IA final draft, the Extended Essay and the TOK essay inside the same few weeks, with school mocks in January or February on top. March is upload month for the core, May is the exam series, and IGCSE candidates sit either the May and June series or the October and November one. Those months are when a paired session either proves its value or falls apart.
Families on these pages come from Dhirubhai Ambani International School and the American School of Bombay in BKC, Ecole Mondiale World School and Jamnabai Narsee International School in Juhu, Cathedral and John Connon School in Fort, B.D. Somani International School in Cuffe Parade, Bombay International School at Babulnath, Aditya Birla World Academy in Tardeo, Oberoi International School on JVLR, Hiranandani Foundation School in Powai, NES International School in Mulund West, Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania School in Thane and D.Y. Patil International School in Nerul. IB Gram is an independent platform with no affiliation to any of them. We name them because their calendars set the pressure points, not because we represent them.
Same school is simply easier. Two Oberoi International School students in the same HL Chemistry class share a teacher, a deadline sheet and the same ambiguous homework instruction, and the tutor spends no part of the hour translating between two syllabuses. Different schools still work when board, subject, level and exam session match: an Aditya Birla World Academy student and a JBCN International School, Parel student both entered for Extended Mathematics sit the same papers whatever their internal tests look like. What never works is pairing a May candidate with an October and November one, because from January they are revising for different things.
IB private tuition in Mumbai is mostly home tuition, and a pair makes the home question sharper: whose home? The host needs a table that seats three, a door that closes and a parent comfortable with another family's child in the house twice a week. Most pairs settle into one home inside a fortnight because one house has the quieter room, and the second family then drops their child and collects them. Alternating homes sounds fairer and reliably produces one cancelled session a month.
Online changes the arithmetic in one specific way: a shared screen puts both students' working in front of each other, which is hard to replicate at a dining table where one notebook faces the wrong way. An IB online tutor in Mumbai can also pair a Nerul student with a Bhandup one, which no home tutor can. The failure mode is equally specific. A paired online session collapses the moment one camera goes off, because the tutor can no longer tell which of the two students is lost.
Hybrid is what most families end up with. Weekly home classes for the teaching, online for the fortnight before a draft is due when sessions get short and frequent, and online for the Thane or Navi Mumbai student whose tutor is three traffic hours away on a Tuesday. A tutor based in Thane who covers Kasarvadavali and Majiwada in person can take a Kharghar student online in the same week without either family losing their slot.
What IB tuition fees in Mumbai depend on does not change in a pair: the board, the level, how scarce teachers of that subject are, how far the tutor travels, how long the session runs and how many sessions a week you book. A pair changes what each family contributes, not what the tutor's hour is worth, and the split is a conversation with the tutor rather than a published rate. We do not print a price list on this page because the numbers belong to the tutor and not to us.
The same way as any other tutor, plus one extra question. We verify identity, the degree or teaching qualification being claimed, and the specific syllabus experience: which board, which subject, which level, which components, which exam sessions. We ask for references from families the tutor has actually taught. The extra question for a shared hour is whether this tutor has taught two students together before and how they describe splitting the time.
There is also work only you can do, and it takes one phone call. Ask about the component rather than the subject: 'have you taken a student through the Language B individual oral?' tells you more than 'do you teach French?'. Ask what the tutor does when one student finishes a question two minutes before the other. Ask what happens to the session when one of the pair is absent. A tutor who has run pairs answers these immediately. A tutor who has not will talk about being flexible.
IB private classes in Mumbai go wrong sometimes, and a tutor who is not working out is an ordinary outcome rather than a complaint. Tell us in week two, not month three: the usual signal is that your child cannot say what the last session was about. A replacement comes from the same shortlist, so the second tutor starts with the diagnostic the first one wrote. When the problem is the pairing rather than the person, we split the pair and keep the tutor, because that is the smaller change and it is more often the right one.
A paired session in a home carries one practical obligation extra: both families should meet the tutor before the first shared hour, both parents should have the tutor's number, and the session belongs in a living room or a study rather than a bedroom. Society gates across Mumbai want a name, a photograph and often a resident's confirmation, so the host family registers the tutor once as a standing weekly visitor rather than arguing at the barrier every Tuesday.
The phrase IB private tuition in Mumbai hides a choice nobody states, and the conditions for making the second option work are strict. Same subject and same level, with no flexibility at all. Within roughly a grade of each other, so a 4 and a 5 pair while a 3 and a 7 do not. The same exam session, and ideally the same school deadlines. And temperaments that can disagree in front of an adult without either student shutting down. Fail any one of those and one-to-one is better, not slightly but clearly.
The pairing families suggest first is almost always two friends, and it is the pairing most likely to fail. Friends arrive with a conversation already running and a shared history that outranks the tutor, so forty minutes in, the tutor is a supervisor. There is a subtler problem underneath that one: a close friend is often the person a student least wants to be visibly wrong in front of, which is the exact opposite of what the second voice is for. Acquaintances from the same tower who know each other by sight pair better than best friends do.
The second suggestion is a strong student with a weaker one, framed as the stronger child helping. It shortchanges both. The weaker student gets an hour of watching somebody else be right, which teaches helplessness efficiently. The stronger student gets revision they did not need and learns to perform rather than think, and their family is paying for that hour too. One deliberate session where a student teaches a topic to the other can be excellent, and we will suggest it. As a standing weekly arrangement it is unfair in both directions.
Then the counter-intuitive one. A shy student often speaks more in a pair than alone with a tutor, because undivided adult attention is heavy: every pause is noticed, every wrong answer lands personally, and the safest move is a short answer. With a second student the attention is shared, the silence belongs to two people, and a hesitant student will frequently finish a peer's half-made point when they would not answer a direct question. To raise this with a tutor without it sounding like a request for a discount, lead with what you want from it: 'she will not argue with me about TOK, would a second student help?'. Ask about the fee afterwards. Tutors hear the discount version of this conversation constantly and respond far better to the teaching version.
At four weeks the test is not the mark. It is whether the tutor can name the specific thing going wrong in the language of the assessment: this criterion, this paper, this question type, this habit of skipping the working. It is whether your child can start that question type without being told how. In a pair there is a third test and it matters most: both students talk. If one has gone quiet by week four, the pair is wrong even when the marks are moving.
At one term you have a marked school task to compare against, a criterion-assessed piece or an internal test with a grade in it. Expect the way the work is wrong to change before the grade does: fewer marks lost to method and more to the genuinely hard part of the question. In a shared session a term is also long enough to see whether the two students have started arriving at different places in the syllabus, which happens when one school runs a topic earlier than the other.
Across one exam cycle, mocks in January or February and then the series in May, you see whether the work holds under time pressure. Here the honest limits apply. A tutor cannot make a student attend, cannot write an IA and cannot compress two years of HL Mathematics into one term of weekly sessions. We do not guarantee grades, and nor should anybody selling you an hour of teaching. What a shared hour can reliably produce is more talking time and a student who has argued a position out loud before an examiner asks for one.
Split the pair when the deadlines diverge, when one student is repeatedly absent and the other is subsidising the gap, when one finishes every question first, or when the quieter of the two has stopped volunteering. Splitting is not a failure of the match and does not mean changing tutors. It usually means the pair did its job for a term and the two students now need different hours.
Four things make the first conversation useful. The last report card with the criterion breakdown or the band, not just the overall grade. The school's assessment calendar, and for a DP student the IA deadline sheet. Two evening slots that survive a bad traffic day on the Eastern Express Highway or Ghodbunder Road. And your pin code with the building name, because an IB home tutor in Mumbai is matched on travel time before anything else.
The first session is a diagnostic and it is one-to-one. The tutor works through a past-paper question or a marked criterion task, finds where the marks are actually going, and finishes with a plan for the next three sessions. If you raised pairing, the tutor tells you at the end of that hour whether they would run your child with a second student, and in which part of the subject: the oral practice, the essay comparison, the discussion work, rarely the whole syllabus.
If you already have a second family in mind, from your tower, your child's class or the school parent group, send both children's details together and say so at the start. We will still check subject, level and grade band before agreeing, and sometimes we will say no. If you have nobody in mind, nothing waits: we shortlist for one student and the pairing question can be revisited next term or never. Most of these requests stay one-to-one, which is the right outcome more often than not, and nobody should feel talked into a second chair at the table.
Usually yes per family, but not half, and that is the point rather than a catch. The tutor's hour is worth what it is worth; a pair changes how two families share it, and most tutors price a shared hour above half their individual rate because preparing for two students at slightly different places takes longer. What IB tuition fees in Mumbai depend on stays the same: board, level, how scarce that subject teacher is, travel distance and session length. Ask the tutor directly how they split a shared hour, and ask that before you ask about a discount.
Yes, and that is the usual arrangement for home tuition with a pair: one visit, one home, two students. The host family registers the tutor at the society gate as a standing weekly visitor so there is no argument at the barrier every week, and the second child is dropped and collected. Pick the home with the quieter room and a table that seats three rather than alternating, because alternating reliably costs one session a month to confusion. Both parents should have the tutor's number, and the session belongs in a living room or study, not a bedroom.
The session runs, and the student who turned up gets the full hour. Agree this before the first shared session rather than after the first absence, because the alternative, cancelling whenever one child has a school event, means every Mumbai school calendar clash costs both families a week. Most tutors treat a missed shared session the way they treat a missed private one: the absent family pays for the slot unless there was notice, and the content is caught up at the start of the next session. Put it in a message to both parents on day one.
Possibly, but a best friend is the weakest common choice. Friends bring a running conversation and a hierarchy the tutor has to work around, and a close friend is often the person a student least wants to be wrong in front of, which defeats the purpose of a second voice in the room. The pairs that work are usually acquaintances: a child from the same tower, the same bus, the same class but a different friendship group. Ask the tutor to judge it after one shared session rather than deciding it yourselves in advance.
No, and we do not arrange it. The IA and the Extended Essay are assessed as individual work, and two students designing one investigation at the same table produce drafts that read alike to a coordinator who is looking for exactly that. The academic-honesty risk sits with the students rather than the tutor, and it is not worth a shared hour. Pairs are for teaching, oral practice, essay comparison and discussion work. When IA season arrives in October and November, we split the hours back to one-to-one even for pairs that have worked well all term.
The host family registers them once, which takes one trip to the society office in most complexes. In Hiranandani Gardens in Powai and in the larger Ghodbunder Road and Pokhran Road complexes in Thane, the usual requirement is a name, a photograph, an identity document number and the resident's confirmation of a weekly slot, after which the tutor is logged as a regular visitor rather than a fresh guest each week. Do this in the first fortnight. A tutor arguing at the barrier at seven in the evening loses teaching minutes nobody gets back.
For oral practice, online is genuinely competitive. A breakout room lets the two students run the stimulus section at each other while the tutor listens and marks, and screen sharing puts both students' annotations where both can see them. It also lets a Nerul student pair with one in Bhandup, which no home visit can. The limits are real: paired online work fails when a camera goes off, when the household is noisy, and for anything that needs a tutor to watch a student's hand move across a Mathematics working, which is most of HL Mathematics.
There is no single answer, and anybody giving you one is selling something. The useful question is narrower: who has taught this component, at this level, for this exam session, and has run two students together before? A tutor who is excellent one-to-one can be poor with a pair, because managing two slightly different paces is a separate skill from explaining well. Ask for the component, ask how they split a shared hour, and ask what they do when one student races ahead. Those answers sort candidates faster than any ranking does.
Often it is the reverse, which surprises most parents. Undivided adult attention is heavy for a quiet student: every pause is noticed and every wrong answer lands personally, so the safe strategy is to say as little as possible. With a second student the attention is shared and the silence is not hers alone, and shy students frequently complete a peer's half-finished point when they would never answer a direct question. The test is week four. If she has gone quieter in the pair than she was alone, we split it and nothing is lost but a month.
Honestly, probably not for a weekday evening slot. The Atal Setu and the Eastern Freeway have changed the map, but a Chembur to Nerul run at seven in the evening is still unpredictable enough that a weekly commitment starts slipping by week five, and the family with the later slot suffers for it. Navi Mumbai works node to node: Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar and Panvel tutors cover their own nodes along Palm Beach Road. A weekend slot across the creek can hold, and online holds all week.
We split it, and the default is that both students keep the tutor. Splitting a pair is faster and cheaper than replacing a tutor, and the pairing is the thing that was wrong more often than the teaching was. Tell us what you are seeing rather than your conclusion: one child finishing first every time, the other going quiet, deadlines pulling in different directions, homework being copied across. If the teaching is also wrong, the replacement comes from the same shortlist and starts with the diagnostic the first tutor wrote.
Send the subject, the level, the school and your pin code, and say whether a second family is already in the picture. We come back with tutors who have taught that exact component, with their verified subject history. The first session is one-to-one. If pairing makes sense, the tutor will say so after seeing your child work, and we arrange it from there.
