How does IB Gram match a tutor for IB past papers practice in Mumbai?

You send the subject, the level, the examination series your child sits and your area. We shortlist two or three tutors who have taught or marked that subject, and you speak to each one before anything is booked. For IB past papers practice in Mumbai the filter that matters is not who happens to be free on Tuesday. It is whether the tutor can mark a structured response against the published criteria and then say, in one sentence, what the next band needed that this answer did not do.

The request form asks for four things most parents do not expect. Which papers has the child already attempted, and were any of them timed. Whether the school has returned mock scripts with examiner-style annotations on them. Which series the child is entered for, because a May candidate and a November candidate stand at different points in the same calendar year. And where you live, because an IB home tutor in Mumbai who lives in Chembur will hold a 7pm Wednesday slot in Chembur for a full year and will quietly stop holding it in Kandivali by the third month. Distance is not a detail on this city; it is the reason arrangements end.

The first session is a diagnostic and it is deliberately not a lesson. The tutor sets one short topic-sorted question set under timing, marks it in front of the student, and builds the first page of the error log together. By the end of that hour you should hold a written list of error types rather than a percentage. Parents are regularly surprised that the diagnostic exposes a command-term problem rather than a content problem: the child knew the chemistry perfectly and answered a question that said 'explain' as though it had said 'state', which costs marks in every series.

If the match is wrong, say so after the second session rather than the eighth. We ask for the reason in a single line, because 'moves too fast' and 'too gentle with her' lead to completely different replacements from the same subject pool. Home tuition arrangements through IB Gram are agreed month to month for exactly this reason, and a replacement does not restart the diagnostic from zero: the error log travels to the new tutor, which is the main practical argument for keeping one.

  • 1. Send the subject, level, examination series and your Mumbai area.
  • 2. Speak to two or three shortlisted tutors before booking anything.
  • 3. Run a diagnostic: one timed set, marked in front of you.
  • 4. Agree a weekly slot and a written error-log format.
  • 5. Review at four weeks against error types, not against scores.

Which IB programme and level your past-paper work should follow

Past-paper practice only means something once you know which course your child is actually entered for. The International Baccalaureate (IB) runs three school-age programmes and they do not all produce papers a family can practise from. The Diploma Programme (DP) in the final two school years is the one with a long public examination record. The Middle Years Programme (MYP) assesses against published criteria and, in schools that opt into it, through on-screen eAssessment, which behaves nothing like a DP paper. The Primary Years Programme sets no examinations at all. Establish the programme, then the level, then the subject. Families who skip that order spend a year practising on material their child will never sit.

Within the DP, Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL) share a subject name and not a component set. The HL course carries additional content and at least one assessment the SL candidate never meets, and in several subjects the question style on a shared paper differs by level as well. Do not take a component weighting, a paper duration or a paper count from a tutor, a forum or a page like this one. The IB revises subject guides on its own cycle, so the only safe sources are the current subject guide for your child's course and your school's Diploma Programme coordinator. Ask the coordinator which components your child sits in which series, and get the answer in writing before you plan practice around it.

Three pieces of DP work cannot be practised from past papers at all. The Internal Assessment (IA) in each subject, the Extended Essay (EE) and the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) essay are judged against criteria rather than against question papers, and running more papers will not move any of the three. An IB home tuition plan that quietly turns into IA drafting has become a different service with a different rhythm, and it should be agreed as such rather than absorbed into practice time. Where a family wants both, we keep them on separate evenings so that neither eats the other.

Command terms are where the level distinction shows up fastest. Each subject guide publishes its own list, and the IB expects 'state', 'outline', 'describe', 'explain', 'discuss', 'evaluate' and 'justify' to be answered at genuinely different depths. A tutor who treats them as synonyms will leave a strong student parked in the middle bands for a year. Ask any prospective IB tutor Mumbai parents shortlist to take one question off a specimen paper and show you what its command term demands that the content alone does not.

  • Confirm the programme, the level and the series before buying practice
  • HL and SL do not sit the same components in most subjects
  • Ask your Diploma Programme coordinator which papers the course sits
  • Internal Assessment, Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge need separate work
  • Treat the current subject guide as the only authority on structure

What an IB past paper is actually testing, subject by subject

A past paper is not one exercise repeated across the curriculum, and treating it as one is why practice stalls. In Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches and Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation, one paper is sat without a calculator and another with a graphic display calculator, and the formula booklet is part of the assessment rather than a crutch, so a student who has never practised locating a result inside it loses minutes she cannot spare. In the sciences a data booklet does the same job for Chemistry and Physics, and the structured questions reward a stated relationship before any number appears. In English A the unseen analysis paper asks whether a student can build a reading of a text she has never met, under timing, which is the one skill no quantity of class notes supplies.

The pattern repeats across the groups with a different twist each time. History sets a source-based paper where the marks sit in cross-referencing provenance, not in retelling the event. Economics sets data response, where a diagram drawn correctly and labelled carries credit a paragraph of description cannot. Business Management releases a case study ahead of the series, so practice there means rehearsing tools against that case rather than hunting fresh questions. Language B separates listening, reading and writing, and the listening component is the one families almost never practise at home because it feels awkward to sit with headphones on at the dining table. Visual Arts and the performance subjects are assessed through submitted work, so there is no paper to practise and a tutor who offers one has misread the course.

Subject choice across both boards is the decision underneath all of this, and it arrives earlier than most families expect. Whether a child takes a science at Higher Level or Standard Level, whether a Cambridge student sits Core or Extended before moving into the DP, and which Internal Assessment each of those courses carries will shape two years of evening work. A tutor covering all IB and IGCSE subjects tutor in Mumbai families need will usually say plainly that no one person teaches the whole span well, which is the honest answer and the reason we shortlist by subject rather than by board.

Our own listing label for the widest brief reads all IB and IGCSE subjects IB and IGCSE, Years 1-12 tutor Mumbai, and it is not elegant English. What it describes is the range the platform covers across the two boards from the first primary year to the final diploma year, not a claim that any single tutor spans it. When you ask for past-paper work, we narrow that range to one subject at one level with one series in view, because a paper is a subject-specific object and generic practice produces generic marks.

  • Calculator and non-calculator mathematics papers need separately rehearsed habits
  • Data and formula booklets are assessed tools, not reference crutches
  • Source papers reward provenance work over narrative retelling of events
  • Listening components are the least practised and the easiest to fix
  • Performance and studio subjects have submitted work, not practice papers

Where in Mumbai home tuition for past-paper practice actually runs

IB Gram places tutors across Mumbai, Maharashtra, and the geography decides what a weekly timed paper can realistically look like. In South Mumbai the distances are short and the clock is not: a tutor crossing from Worli to Colaba covers eight kilometres and still loses time at the Peddar Road and Haji Ali signals in the evening peak, so we match inside the island, between Cuffe Parade, Walkeshwar, Tardeo and Parel, rather than pulling someone down from the suburbs. The Coastal Road has changed the northbound run more than the southbound one, and Metro Line 3 has made a BKC-based tutor viable for a Cuffe Parade family in a way the Western Line never did.

The Western Suburbs run north to south along the Western Line and the Western Express Highway, which means matching along the line works and matching across it does not. Khar West to Santacruz West is a sane weekly commitment; Malad to Kandivali East is too. Juhu, Bandra West, Andheri West, Goregaon East and Borivali all have deep IB populations, and Metro Lines 2A and 7 have made the Dahisar to Andheri stretch workable for tutors who previously would not cross Link Road at 6pm. In the Central Suburbs, Powai is the exception worth planning around: it sits physically central but has no station of its own, so tutors reach Hiranandani Gardens and Chandivali by road off JVLR from Andheri East, Kanjurmarg or Ghatkopar, and a 7pm slot there means the tutor left at six.

The Eastern Suburbs stretch from Chembur and Govandi through Vikhroli and Bhandup to Mulund West on the Central and Harbour lines, and the Eastern Freeway makes Wadala and Chembur far closer to the island city than the map suggests. Navi Mumbai is planned in nodes, so we match node to node: Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar and Panvel are each a short drive from the next on Palm Beach Road and the Sion-Panvel Highway, and the Atal Setu has shortened the island crossing without making a weekday evening lesson from South Mumbai hold for a full term. Thane spreads from the station east across Pokhran Road, Majiwada and Ghodbunder Road, and the Ghodbunder stretch sets the schedule outright: twenty minutes to Kasarvadavali off-peak, close to an hour at seven in the evening. Thane tutors cover Thane; Mulund tutors sometimes cross the Eastern Express Highway and rarely more than once a week.

This is also the honest answer to the searches people actually type. Parents looking for IB tutors near me Mumbai are not asking for proximity as a convenience; they are asking for an arrangement that survives the monsoon and the exam term. For IB past papers practice in Mumbai the practical test is whether the tutor can reach you on the week a whole timed paper is scheduled, when the session cannot be shortened to fit the traffic. We would rather place someone twenty minutes away who holds the slot than a better-credentialled tutor an hour away who starts cancelling in July.

  • South Mumbai matched within the island: Cuffe Parade to Parel
  • Western Suburbs matched along the line, not across Link Road
  • Powai and Chandivali reached by road off JVLR, never by train
  • Navi Mumbai matched node to node on Palm Beach Road
  • Thane slots planned around the Ghodbunder Road evening peak

The Mumbai school calendar that decides when whole papers start

Families here deal with a school year that runs from June, a mock season in the cold months and a May examination series, and the gap between those three sets the whole practice plan. Schools such as Dhirubhai Ambani International School in BKC, Ecole Mondiale World School in Juhu, Oberoi International School off JVLR, Aditya Birla World Academy in Tardeo, Cathedral and John Connon School in Fort and NES International School in Mulund West each set their own internal deadlines, and those internal dates, not the IB's, are what your child feels first. IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with any school named on this page; we name them because their calendars are the pressure points our tutors schedule around.

The practical shape of the year is predictable. June to August is when topic-sorted question sets belong, because the course is still being taught and a whole paper would test material the class has not reached. September and October are when Internal Assessment drafts land in most schools, which is also when past-paper time gets squeezed and should be protected rather than abandoned. November and December carry the mock series in a large share of Mumbai IB schools, and that is the first honest read on timing and stamina. January to March is the stretch where whole papers under full conditions do the most work. April is revision triage, not new learning.

Two calendar facts catch families out every year. The first is that a November-series candidate runs the entire cycle six months out of step with the May majority, so a tutor who plans by the common calendar will have that child doing topic sets when she should be doing whole papers. The second is that the monsoon genuinely interrupts attendance between June and September, particularly on the Ghodbunder Road and JVLR runs and on the Harbour Line, and a plan that assumes forty uninterrupted weekly sessions is a plan that has not been to Mumbai in July. We build the schedule with a spare slot in the week rather than pretend otherwise.

Ask your school's examinations officer for two dates as early as you can: the mock window and the deadline by which the school confirms your child's component entries. Those two dates, held against the subject guide your school is teaching, tell a tutor when to switch from topic sets to full papers. A home tutor who plans against the school's actual calendar rather than a generic revision timetable is doing the part of the job a parent cannot do from the outside.

  • Topic-sorted sets from June while the course is still being taught
  • Protect practice time through the September and October draft season
  • Mock series in November and December gives the first timing read
  • Whole papers under full conditions from January to March
  • November-series candidates run the whole cycle six months offset

Should past-paper sessions be home classes or online for a Mumbai student?

Home tutoring is the lead option and for timed papers it has a specific advantage: someone is physically in the room while the clock runs. A paper written at the dining table with a tutor sitting across from it is a paper written without a phone, without a browser tab and without the three unlogged pauses that make a student's self-reported timing meaningless. IB home tuition in Mumbai also solves the supervision problem for working parents, because the adult who enforces the sitting does not have to be you. The honest cost is travel: a tutor crossing the Bandra-Worli Sea Link or coming up the Eastern Express Highway in the evening peak is paying for that in time, and that time shows up in both the fee and the reliability of the slot.

Online is better than home tutoring at two specific jobs and worse at one. It is better for the marking debrief, because a scanned script on a shared screen with a mark scheme beside it is easier to annotate together than a paper passed back and forth across a table. It is also the only realistic route to a scarce subject: a family in Panvel wanting Higher Level Economics or a less commonly taught Language B may simply not have that specialist within an hour, and an IB online tutor in Mumbai solves that where geography cannot. What online does badly is supervise a sitting. A student alone in a room with a camera on will stop the clock, and most do.

Hybrid is what we actually recommend for IB past papers practice in Mumbai once a routine is established. The student writes the paper at home under timing with a parent or an older sibling starting and stopping the clock, photographs the script, and the debrief happens online within forty-eight hours while the reasoning is still recoverable. The home visit then carries the teaching that came out of the marking, usually fortnightly rather than weekly. Families booking all IB and IGCSE subjects home classes Mumbai tutors cover across several children often land here for scheduling reasons alone, because one travelling tutor cannot be in two bedrooms at six o'clock.

There is one mode we argue against. Group past-paper sessions look efficient and are not, because the whole value of the exercise sits in the individual error log. Two students in the same room make the same gross error for different reasons, and a tutor marking both at once will record the error and miss the reason. If cost is the constraint, reduce the frequency of individual sessions rather than share them.

  • Home sessions supervise the sitting; that is their real advantage
  • Online is stronger for marking debriefs and for scarce subjects
  • Hybrid: write at home under timing, debrief online within two days
  • Travel across the Sea Link or the highways shows up in reliability
  • Group past-paper sessions dilute the one thing that matters: the error log

How do we check a tutor can mark to the scheme, not just to the answer?

Every tutor on IB Gram is checked on identity, on qualification and on subject history before a profile goes live, and for past-paper work we add one more step that matters more than the others. We ask the tutor to mark a sample response against the published mark scheme and explain the award. That exercise separates two groups of people who look identical on paper: those who know the subject, and those who know how the subject is credited. A graduate who can solve every question on a Higher Level Physics paper and cannot explain why a method mark survives a wrong final answer is not ready to run practice for a diploma candidate.

The specific competencies we look for are narrow and testable. Can the tutor read a mark scheme's own conventions, including the alternative-answer notation, the 'accept any valid equivalent' instruction and the error-carried-forward principle that saves a student who slipped in part (a) and reasoned correctly in part (b). Has the tutor read the subject report for the series they are preparing a child for, which is where examiners say in plain language what candidates did badly. Can they tell the difference between a response that is wrong and a response that is right but unawarded because the working is missing. Parents chasing the best IB tutor in Mumbai often screen on degree and institution; these three questions are more predictive than either.

There is a set of checks only you can do, and they take one phone call. Ask the tutor to send one annotated script, with the student's identifying details removed, and look at whether the annotations reference criteria or simply say 'good point'. Ask which subject report they read most recently and what it said. Ask how they log errors and request the template. Ask what they will not do, because a tutor with a clear boundary around Internal Assessment authorship is a tutor who understands academic honesty. And be wary of anyone who offers a guaranteed grade on the back of a paper count, because that promise is not available to any honest tutor in this subject or any other.

Academic honesty deserves its own sentence here, because past-paper practice sits close to a line. Working through a released paper with a tutor is ordinary preparation. A tutor supplying worked solutions that a student then presents as her own Internal Assessment is malpractice, and the school, not the platform, will deal with the consequence. Our tutors are briefed on this and we act on reports. If a tutor's role in a piece of submitted work could not be described out loud to the coordinator, it has gone too far.

  • Tutors mark a sample response and explain the award before listing
  • We test mark-scheme literacy, not only subject fluency
  • Ask for one annotated script with student details removed
  • Ask which examiner subject report they read most recently
  • A clear boundary around Internal Assessment authorship is a good sign

Where to get IB past papers legally, and what IB Gram will not send you

Start with the part most pages avoid. IB Gram does not host, store, email or sell past papers, mark schemes or subject reports. They are the International Baccalaureate's copyright material, and the routes to them are your child's subject teacher, your school's examinations officer or Diploma Programme coordinator, the school's own licensed access to the IB's resource platform, and the IB's official store for the items it sells to the public. Specimen papers released for a new syllabus are the other legitimate starting point and the most useful one when a guide has recently changed. Ask the coordinator which syllabus version your child is on before you accept a single paper from anywhere, because a paper from the previous guide can test content that has been removed and omit what now matters most.

The free-paper sites deserve a warning rather than a link. Three problems recur: papers from superseded syllabus versions presented without a date, mark schemes that have been retyped by a volunteer and quietly altered, and 'solutions' that give a correct final answer with none of the working a marker credits. A student who practises against a fabricated scheme learns to write the answer the site wanted. We have seen that produce confident, fluent responses that score in the middle bands because the student was never once marked on justification. If a scheme does not look like the board's own document, it is not one.

The method itself is a ladder and the order is not optional. Stage one is topic-sorted question sets, pulled from papers and grouped by syllabus topic, taken while the topic is fresh and taken untimed at first so the student learns the question style before the clock is introduced. Stage two keeps the topic sets and adds timing per question, which is where most of the real gain happens, because the student discovers that a question she can answer in nine minutes is worth very little when the paper gives her four. Stage three is whole papers under full conditions, and it belongs close to the series, not in August. Stage four is the one families skip: re-sitting a paper already done, three weeks later, to see whether the fix held.

Marking is the half of this that gets neglected, and it has rules. Mark against the published mark scheme, never against a worked answer, because the scheme tells you what was credited and an answer only tells you what was correct. Mark in two passes: first award what the scheme allows, then write one line per lost mark naming the error type. Then log by type, not by score. A log with columns for the question reference, the command term, the error type and the single fix is worth more than a spreadsheet of percentages, because percentages go up and down with paper difficulty while error types repeat until something is done about them. The categories that account for most of the lost marks are familiar: misread command term, arithmetic slip, missing unit or significant figure, assertion without justification, time overrun, and the blank question that was never attempted. Read the examiner subject report for the series alongside the log, because the report will usually name your child's error type in the first page of its general comments, and seeing it described as a common candidate failing does more for a sixteen-year-old's willingness to change than a parent's third reminder.

  • Papers come from your school or the board's own store, not us
  • Confirm the syllabus version before trusting any paper you are given
  • Retyped mark schemes and answer-only solutions teach the wrong habit
  • Topic sets untimed, then timed, then whole papers near the series
  • Log the error type and the fix; percentages tell you almost nothing
  • Re-sit a paper three weeks later to check the fix actually held

What does four weeks of past-paper practice actually change?

At four weeks you should see changes in behaviour, not in grades, and anyone promising otherwise is selling. The realistic four-week markers are these: the student finishes a timed section instead of running out of paper, the error log shows the same three categories rather than fifteen scattered ones, and she can say what a command term is asking before she starts writing. Those are small and they are the leading indicators. A score that moves in week three usually moved because the second paper was easier, which is precisely why we do not report progress as a percentage.

One term is where a parent can reasonably expect something visible. By then the log has enough entries to show whether an error type is being retired or merely renamed, and a school mock sits inside that window to provide an external read. This is also the point at which the arrangement should be reviewed honestly. If the same error type is still top of the log after a term of weekly work, the problem is probably not practice volume: it is either an underlying content gap that practice cannot paper over, or a mismatch between tutor and student, and both have different fixes. We would rather have that conversation at twelve weeks than at the mock.

Across a full examination cycle, the honest claim is that structured practice removes a category of avoidable loss. It does not add knowledge the student never had, it does not substitute for the Internal Assessment work that sits alongside it, and it cannot compensate for a subject chosen at the wrong level. IB Gram does not guarantee grades and no tutor on the platform is permitted to. Outcomes depend on the student's starting point, the time actually put in, the school's teaching and a set of exam-day factors nobody controls. What we can describe is the process and whether it was followed.

There is a limit worth naming out loud, because families discover it late. Past-paper practice is a sharpening tool and a blunt instrument for teaching. If a Standard Level student has not understood the core of a topic, running papers on it produces repeated failure and a demoralised child. The right move there is three weeks of teaching before any paper is touched, and a good IB private tutor Mumbai parents trust will say so in the diagnostic rather than bill a term of practice first. Ask your tutor in week one which of the two your child needs, and expect an answer that is not simply 'both'.

  • Four weeks: finishing to time, fewer error categories, command terms understood
  • One term: enough log entries to see whether an error type retired
  • Review honestly at twelve weeks rather than waiting for the mock
  • Practice sharpens; it does not teach a topic never understood
  • Outcomes depend on starting point, hours, school teaching and exam day

Starting IB past papers practice in Mumbai with a home tutor

Prepare four things before the first session and the diagnostic will be worth twice as much. The subject, the level and the series, confirmed with the school rather than remembered. Any returned mock script, with the school's annotations still on it, because a marked script tells a tutor more in ten minutes than an hour of conversation. The last two report comments, which usually name the problem in school language. And one sentence from your child about what she finds hardest, collected before the tutor arrives, because the version she gives a stranger in week one is rarely the true one.

The first session runs to a fixed shape. Twenty minutes on the script and the reports, one short timed set, marking in front of the student with the scheme open, and the first four rows of the error log written together. The tutor then tells you one thing to expect and one thing to watch. You should end that session with a slot, a log format and a review date, and nothing else committed. We ask every family to set the review date in writing at the first session, because a review that is not diarised does not happen.

Practicalities on this city, stated plainly. Give the tutor your society's visitor process before the first visit rather than at the gate, because a tutor held at a Powai or Kharghar gate for fifteen minutes has lost the warm-up of a timed session. Pick a slot that accounts for your corridor: a Ghodbunder Road arrival at 6:30pm and a Peddar Road arrival at 6:30pm are different propositions. Set the paper on the same weekday each week, because the routine is doing as much work as the marking. And keep one fixed desk, lit, with a working clock the student can see without turning around.

A home tutor for all IB and IGCSE subjects Mumbai families need is not one person, and we will not pretend otherwise. Tell us the subject and the level and we will come back with a short list, their marking background and the areas they actually cover, and you choose. If the first choice does not work after two sessions, we re-shortlist from the same subject pool and the error log goes with your child, not with the tutor.

  • Have the subject, level and examination series confirmed by the school
  • Bring a returned mock script with the school's annotations intact
  • Agree the slot, the log format and a review date in writing
  • Send the society visitor process before the first visit, not at the gate
  • Keep one lit desk and a clock the student can see unmoved
FAQs

Mumbai tutoring — questions parents ask

Can IB Gram send me IB past papers and mark schemes?+

No. Past papers, mark schemes and examiner subject reports are the International Baccalaureate's copyright material, and we do not host, email or sell them. The legitimate routes are your child's subject teacher, your school's examinations officer or Diploma Programme coordinator, the school's licensed access to the IB's resource platform, and the IB's own official store for items sold to the public. Specimen papers released with a new syllabus are also worth asking for. Our tutors work with papers your school has supplied or that you have obtained through those channels, and they will tell you if a paper you have been given belongs to a superseded syllabus version.

How many papers should my child do before the May series?+

There is no single right number, and anyone who quotes one is guessing at your child's starting point. The useful question is the mix and the order. Early in the year, topic-sorted question sets taken while the topic is fresh beat whole papers, because a full paper tests material the class has not covered. Closer to the series, whole papers under full timing become the main instrument. For IB past papers practice in Mumbai we plan backwards from the school's mock window and the series date, and we build in repeat sittings of papers already done, because re-sitting one paper three weeks later tells you more than adding a fresh one.

Should the tutor mark the paper, or should my child mark her own?+

Both, in that order, and the sequence is the point. The tutor marks the first few papers with the scheme open and the student watching, so the student learns what the scheme actually credits rather than what looks correct. After that the student marks her own first, in writing, and the tutor marks it again independently. The gap between the two marks is the single most useful diagnostic in the whole method: a student who consistently awards herself marks the scheme does not award has a justification problem, and one who misses marks she earned is underclaiming and will do the same in the real series.

Can a tutor travel to Kharghar for an evening slot during the week?+

Yes, and the realistic version is a tutor already based in Navi Mumbai rather than one crossing from the island city. Kharghar sits a short drive from Belapur, Nerul and Panvel on the Sion-Panvel Highway and Palm Beach Road, so node-to-node matching holds for a full term where a crossing over the creek does not, Atal Setu or no Atal Setu. For a weekday evening slot, expect to agree a start time that assumes traffic rather than one that hopes against it. If the only specialist in your subject is in the Western Suburbs, hybrid is the arrangement that survives: papers written at home, debrief online.

Does the tutor need a gate pass from our society every week?+

Usually once, not weekly, and sorting it in advance protects your session time. Most Mumbai complexes will register a recurring visitor for a standing weekly slot if a resident requests it at the office, which turns a fifteen-minute wait at the gate into a thirty-second entry. Societies in Powai, Chembur, Thane and Navi Mumbai mostly run app-based visitor approvals now, and the one failure mode is a parent who is out and cannot approve the entry. Give the tutor the process, the gate number and a second contact before the first visit. A timed paper that starts twenty minutes late is not a timed paper.

My child does well on topic questions and badly on whole papers. Why?+

Almost always timing and sequencing rather than knowledge, and it is the most common pattern we see in a diagnostic. A topic set gives one kind of question in a row, so the student never has to decide what sort of answer a question wants. A whole paper mixes them and prices each one differently, so the student spends too long on an early question she enjoys and arrives at the last section with nothing left. The fix is per-question timing inside topic sets first, then whole papers with a written plan of how long each section gets, and a rule that an unfinished question is left and returned to.

What do IB tuition fees in Mumbai depend on for this kind of work?+

Fees vary with the level, the scarcity of the subject, the length of the session, how far the tutor travels and whether marking happens inside the session or between sessions. Past-paper work has one cost factor most subjects do not: marking a full paper properly takes the tutor real time outside the lesson, so some tutors price that separately and others fold it into a longer slot. Ask which model you are being quoted before you compare two tutors. Higher Level sciences and less commonly taught languages cost more because fewer people can mark them. We publish no price list and do not set tutor rates.

Is online practice as effective as home tuition for timed papers?+

For the marking debrief, yes and often better; for the sitting itself, no. A scanned script shared on screen with the mark scheme beside it is easier to annotate together than paper passed across a table, so the teaching half of the work transfers cleanly online. Supervising a full timed paper over a video call does not work in practice, because a student alone in a room will pause the clock and will not record that she did. The arrangement that solves both is hybrid: the paper written at home with an adult starting and stopping the clock, the debrief online within two days.

We live off Ghodbunder Road in Thane. How does the evening commute affect our slot?+

It decides your slot time, so plan around it rather than negotiating with it. From Thane station to Kasarvadavali is around twenty minutes off-peak and close to an hour in the evening peak, which means a tutor living near the station can hold a 5pm Kasarvadavali slot comfortably and will struggle with 7pm every week by November. We match within Thane wherever the subject allows, across Pokhran Road, Majiwada and the Ghodbunder corridor, and Mulund tutors cross the Eastern Express Highway for at most one evening a week. A weekend morning slot in Thane is frequently the most reliable choice families never ask for.

There has been no visible progress after a month. What should we do?+

Open the error log before changing the tutor, because the log usually names the problem. If the same three error types are still at the top after four weeks of weekly work, there are three realistic explanations and they have different fixes: the student is not doing the between-session work, so the hour is spent re-teaching; there is a content gap underneath that practice is exposing rather than closing; or the tutor and student are not a fit. Tell us which of the three it looks like in one line and we re-shortlist from the same subject pool. Four weeks is early for grades and the right time for a process review.

Can past papers help with the Internal Assessment or the Extended Essay?+

No, and conflating the two costs families a term. The Internal Assessment, the Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge essay are assessed against published criteria rather than against question papers, so no quantity of paper practice moves them. They need a different rhythm: criteria read line by line, a plan, drafts with dated feedback and a clear record of whose ideas are whose. If your child needs both, book them as separate pieces of work on separate evenings, and keep the tutor's role in any submitted work narrow enough that it could be described out loud to the coordinator.

Is IB Gram connected to my child's school in any way?+

No. IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or acting on behalf of any school named on this page or any other. We name Mumbai schools because their calendars, their mock windows and their board pathways are the practical context a tutor has to plan around, not because any relationship exists. Tutors are matched by subject, level and area, and they are briefed to work alongside the school's teaching rather than contradict it. For anything about entries, components or syllabus versions, your school's coordinator is the authority and we will tell you to ask them.

Find your Mumbai tutor

Send us the subject, the level, the examination series and your Mumbai area, and we will come back with two or three tutors who have taught or marked that subject, with their marking background written out. You speak to them before anything is booked. The first session is a diagnostic: one timed set, marked in front of your child against the published scheme, and the first page of an error log you keep. Papers come from your school, not from us.
