IB MYP Tutor in Mumbai

An IB MYP tutor in Mumbai is most useful to a parent holding a report card they cannot read: criterion bands, no percentages, four letters per subject. IB Gram matches verified home tutors across Mumbai who teach your child to read those criteria first, then work on what the bands actually show. Home tuition, online or hybrid.

How does IB Gram match an IB MYP tutor in Mumbai to the report card in your hand?

Send the report card, not just a subject name. IB Gram reads which criteria carry the low bands, which of the eight Middle Years Programme subject groups those criteria sit in, and which part of Mumbai you live in, then shortlists tutors who have taught those exact criteria. You approve the shortlist before anyone travels to your building.

1. Tell us your child's year in the Middle Years Programme, the subjects on the report, and the criterion letters that slipped. 2. Add your area, your lane or society name, and the two evening slots that genuinely work on a school night. 3. We shortlist by criterion experience first and travel time second, and send you what each tutor has taught, subject group by subject group. 4. You choose one and book a first session at home or online. 5. The tutor writes back after it with a criterion-by-criterion read of what your child could and could not do, and you decide whether to keep the slot.

The order of those steps matters more than it looks. A Grade 9 student at a school on JVLR comes home with Sciences reported as a 5, and the four bands behind it read A 6, B 3, C 4, D 7. A tutor who starts revising cell biology is working on criterion A, which is already the strongest thing on the page. The gap is inquiring and designing, and processing and evaluating data: writing a testable hypothesis, controlling a variable, drawing a graph that answers the research question rather than decorating the report. Match on the subject name and you buy content revision. Match on the criterion and you buy the thing the report was actually telling you.

If nobody in your corridor has taught that subject group, we say so rather than sending whoever is nearest. Design and the Arts are the two groups where this happens most often, and the honest answer is usually a weekend home slot with a tutor from one zone over, or an online tutor who has marked that rubric. A request we cannot fill well gets refused with a reason attached, which is cheaper for you than a tutor who learns the criteria at your dining table.

  • Report card first: criterion letters and bands, not only the subject name
  • Shortlists name the subject groups and criteria each tutor has taught
  • Travel time is a filter, but never the first filter
  • The first session ends with a written criterion-by-criterion note to you
  • Unfillable requests are refused with a reason, not filled with the nearest tutor

Where the Middle Years Programme sits, and why it reports criteria instead of percentages

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) covers the five years between the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and the Diploma Programme (DP), which schools here usually line up with Grades 6 to 10. It is assessed against published criteria rather than by percentage, so a subject report gives you four criterion bands and a single subject grade from 1 to 7, and no marks out of a hundred anywhere.

Underneath that sit eight subject groups, interdisciplinary units that pull two groups together, approaches to learning, service as action, and a long independent project in the final year that a separate page on this site covers properly. Criterion-related assessment means your child's work is judged against descriptors fixed before the task was set. It is not ranked against the class and it is not totalled by counting marks lost, which is the arithmetic every parent educated under CBSE, ICSE or a percentage-based state board learned to trust. Even IGCSE and the IB Diploma Programme hand back a subject grade that came off papers with mark schemes, so the MYP report is the first one in a child's school life that refuses to convert.

Approaches to learning is the other column parents skip. It covers communication, social, self-management, research and thinking skills, and in most Mumbai schools it is reported separately from the 1 to 7, as a short scale or a comment. It is not part of the subject grade. A child with solid subject bands and a flag against self-management is not being criticised for ability: somebody is telling you the work arrives late, the drafts are lost, or the research folder has no sources in it. That is a fixable problem and it is usually the one worth paying a tutor to fix first.

Schools in the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), Years 1-5 structure may also offer the optional on-screen eAssessment and ePortfolios at the end of Year 5 for the MYP certificate. Many Mumbai schools do not, and move students straight into the IB Diploma Programme or IGCSE instead. Ask your coordinator which route your school takes, because it changes what the final year's marking is for.

  • Five years between the PYP and the DP, commonly Grades 6 to 10 in Mumbai
  • Eight subject groups, each with its own named set of criteria
  • Criterion bands describe what the work showed, not marks out of a hundred
  • Approaches to learning is reported separately from the subject grade
  • Optional Year 5 eAssessment exists; many Mumbai schools do not use it

The eight MYP subject groups and the four criteria each one is marked against

The eight groups are Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, Arts, Physical and Health Education, and Design. Each group is marked against four criteria labelled A to D. Each criterion has its own band scale, and each band is defined by a written descriptor rather than a mark, which is the whole reason the report looks the way it does.

The criteria are named, and the names tell you what is being tested. Mathematics marks knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Sciences marks knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. Language and Literature marks analysing, organizing, producing text, and using language. Individuals and Societies marks knowing and understanding, investigating, communicating, and thinking critically. Design marks inquiring and analysing, developing ideas, creating the solution, and evaluating. Language Acquisition marks listening, reading, speaking and writing as four separate criteria, which is why a child fluent at the dinner table can still sit at a low band in reading.

Inside each band descriptor are strands, the separate things the work has to do. A band is awarded on best fit: the teacher decides which descriptor the work matches across most strands, not which boxes were ticked. Alongside the task your child should have received a task-specific clarification, the same criterion rewritten in the language of that particular unit, and command terms that fix what the question wants: describe, explain, analyse, evaluate, justify. One task rarely assesses all four criteria. A unit might assess B and C only, so a blank column on the portal is a criterion not yet assessed, not a zero, and parents lose a lot of evenings to that misreading.

Parents who ask for an MYP subject groups tutor in Mumbai usually mean one teacher who can cover two or three groups at once, and that is sometimes realistic. Sciences with Design, or Individuals and Societies with Language and Literature, share enough of the investigating and communicating criteria that one tutor can hold both. Mathematics with Language and Literature almost never works. We would rather tell you that than sell you a single slot that covers half of what you asked for.

  • Four criteria per subject group, each on its own band scale
  • Sciences criterion B is inquiring and designing: method, variables, hypothesis
  • Language Acquisition splits listening, reading, speaking and writing
  • Task-specific clarifications rewrite the criterion for that one unit
  • A blank criterion column means not yet assessed, not a zero
  • One tutor across two related groups is realistic; across unrelated groups it is not

IB MYP home tutor coverage across the six zones of Mumbai

An IB MYP home tutor in Mumbai is matched zone by zone, because the evening commute decides whether a weekly slot survives past the first month. The six zones we work across are South Mumbai, the Western Suburbs, the Central Suburbs, the Eastern Suburbs, Navi Mumbai and Thane, and each one behaves differently once school lets out.

In South Mumbai we match within the island: Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Churchgate, Walkeshwar, Peddar Road, Tardeo, Worli and Parel. Distances are short and the clock still runs against you, because the Peddar Road and Haji Ali signals can take forty minutes off an eight-kilometre run at seven in the evening. The Coastal Road and Metro Line 3 have changed that for some trips, the Churchgate and Grant Road stretch of the Western Line for others. In the Western Suburbs, which run from Bandra and Khar West up through Santacruz, Juhu, Andheri West, Goregaon East, Malad, Kandivali, Borivali and Dahisar, matching along the line works and matching across it does not. Khar West to Santacruz on the Western Line is nothing; Juhu to Goregaon East across the Western Express Highway at six is a different evening. Metro Lines 2A and 7 have made the Dahisar to Andheri leg predictable for the first time, and an IB home tutor in Mumbai who uses the metro rather than Link Road will usually hold a 5.30pm slot.

The Central Suburbs cover Kurla, Ghatkopar, Powai, Chandivali and Kanjurmarg, and Powai is the one to think about: it is geographically central with no station of its own, so tutors arrive by road off JVLR from Andheri East or Ghatkopar, or over the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road. The Eastern Suburbs run Chembur, Govandi, Wadala, Vikhroli, Bhandup and Mulund on the Central and Harbour lines and the Eastern Express Highway, and the Eastern Freeway makes Chembur to South Mumbai far quicker than the map suggests. Navi Mumbai is matched node to node across Vashi, Nerul, Seawoods, Belapur, Kharghar and Panvel along Palm Beach Road and the Sion-Panvel Highway; the Atal Setu has shortened the island crossing, but pulling a tutor over the creek for a Tuesday evening rarely lasts a full term. In Thane, Ghodbunder Road sets the timetable: station to Kasarvadavali is twenty minutes off-peak and close to an hour at eight, so we match Pokhran Road, Majiwada and Hiranandani Estate families with Thane-based tutors.

The IB tutors near me Mumbai search sorts by distance, which is the least useful filter for criterion work. A tutor four kilometres away who has never marked Design criterion C is worse than one twenty minutes further who has. Monsoon is the real test of a match: a slot that depends on a clean run down Ghodbunder Road or the Western Express Highway in July will be cancelled twice, which is why we agree a fallback online session at booking rather than after the first washout. Home tuition holds up best when the tutor already lives inside your corridor.

  • South Mumbai matched within the island: Worli, Tardeo, Walkeshwar, Cuffe Parade
  • Western Suburbs matched along the line, not across the Western Express Highway
  • Powai and Chandivali reached by road off JVLR, not by train
  • Navi Mumbai matched node to node: Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar, Panvel
  • Thane slots set by Ghodbunder Road, not by distance on a map
  • A monsoon fallback to online is agreed at booking, not after a washout

When MYP marks actually land in the Mumbai school year

Most Mumbai schools open the academic year in June, and the MYP marking calendar follows a shape worth knowing before you book anything. The first real summative tasks land in late August and September, which is when a parent first meets criterion bands for that year. The term report arrives around the Diwali break in October, interim comment sheets in between, a second cluster of summatives through January and February, and the final summatives and year-end report in March and April.

That shape sets the pressure points. September is the month to act, because the first bands of the year are the ones a tutor can still change. October reports are read in the worst possible week, with the Diwali break about to erase any working rhythm. February is when Year 5 students are closing their long project while every subject group is also running a summative, and the year-end report in April tells you what happened rather than what to do about it. Families at Ecole Mondiale World School in Juhu, Oberoi International School at Goregaon East on JVLR, JBCN International School at Parel and at Chembur, Singapore International School in Dahisar East, NES International School in Mulund West and D.Y. Patil International School in Nerul all work to broadly this rhythm, with their own dates.

Each school publishes its own assessment policy, and it is the single most useful document you are not reading. It states how criterion bands across a year are combined into the reported grade, whether the school averages or applies best fit, which tasks are summative, and the boundary table it uses to turn criterion totals into a 1 to 7. It is usually on the parent portal. Ask the coordinator for it by name if you cannot find it, and read the two paragraphs about combining criterion levels before the next parent evening. Schools around Mumbai differ here, and the difference changes what a single weak task does to the report.

Naming a school on this page is local context and nothing more. IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with any school named here, with the International Baccalaureate, or with Cambridge International Education. Dhirubhai Ambani International School in Bandra Kurla Complex, Aditya Birla World Academy in Tardeo and Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania School in Thane each run their own pathways and their own calendars; we simply match tutors to the families who attend them, and we do not speak for any school.

  • June start, first summative bands in late August and September
  • October term report lands the week before the Diwali break
  • January and February carry the heaviest summative load
  • The school assessment policy states how criterion levels are combined
  • Ask for the boundary table the school uses for the 1 to 7 grade

Is a home tutor, online lessons or a hybrid better for MYP marking in Mumbai?

Home tuition first, because criterion work runs on physical evidence. IB MYP home tuition in Mumbai lets a tutor sit with the actual marked task, the rubric the teacher ringed, the draft with margin comments and the task-specific clarification sheet, all at once. Screenshots of a portal lose exactly the annotation that explains the band, and a child cannot narrate what they never understood.

A home tutor also sees the working conditions, which matters more in the MYP than at any other stage. The research folder with no sources, the unit planner never opened, the three different notebooks for one subject group: these are the things that produce a criterion B band of 3 while criterion A sits at 6, and they are invisible on a video call. What home tuition costs depends on the subject group, the year, how scarce that teaching experience is in your zone, the travel distance and the session length, and we would rather explain those factors than publish a number that will be wrong for your case.

An IB online tutor in Mumbai earns its place in two situations. The first is a scarce subject group: Design, the Arts, or Language Acquisition in French, Spanish or Mandarin, where the right tutor may live in Thane while you live in Cuffe Parade. The second is the evening when the Western Express Highway or Ghodbunder Road has simply closed. Online handles criterion discussion, re-marking a typed draft against descriptors and screen-shared graphing well; it handles a Design folder or an Arts process journal poorly, and a Year 6 student who needs someone to take a phone away works better with a person in the room.

Hybrid is what most families settle into: one home session a week against the current task, plus a short online check before a submission deadline. Most MYP subject groups home classes Mumbai families book run sixty or ninety minutes once a week, and ninety is the honest minimum if you want a task re-marked and a target set in the same sitting. An IB private tutor Mumbai parents hire for one subject group often ends up advising on two, because the communicating and investigating criteria repeat across groups, and that is fine as long as nobody pretends it is subject expertise in both.

  • Home tuition sees the annotated task, the rubric and the working conditions
  • Online is the honest answer for scarce groups like Design and the Arts
  • Hybrid: one home session weekly, a short online check before submission
  • Ninety minutes if a task is to be re-marked and a target set together
  • Fees depend on subject group, year, scarcity, travel and session length

How are IB MYP tutors in Mumbai checked, and what should you check yourself?

Before a tutor appears on your shortlist, IB Gram verifies identity and contact details, the qualifications claimed, the teaching record behind them, and specifically which MYP subject groups and criteria that person has taught or marked. References are checked where a school or family will give one. What no check can do is promise an outcome: we do not guarantee grades, and any tutor who does has told you something useful about themselves.

Then do your own checking, and it takes one conversation. Ask the tutor to name the four criteria for your child's subject group without looking them up. Ask what separates a band 5 from a band 7 on one named strand. Ask them to re-mark a task your child has already had back, say the band they would award, and justify it against the descriptor before you show them what the teacher gave. A tutor who has actually taught the MYP will enjoy that question. There is no single best IB tutor in Mumbai, and anyone claiming the title has not read your child's report.

The warning signs are consistent. A tutor who converts criterion bands into percentages for you has misunderstood the programme. A tutor who has never seen a task-specific clarification has not taught it. A tutor who proposes drilling past papers is working from an IGCSE or CBSE playbook, because MYP summatives are set by the school against the criteria and there is no national paper bank to grind through. Promises about a 7, or about moving two grades in a term, belong in the same bin.

Practical checks at home are worth as much as paperwork. Keep the first session in a room where an adult is in earshot, have the tutor's identification seen at the society gate, and start on a short commitment rather than paying for a term up front. Tell us after that first session what you thought; if the fit is wrong, ask for a different tutor and say which part was wrong, because criterion mismatch and personality mismatch need different replacements.

  • Identity, qualifications, teaching record and criterion experience verified
  • Ask the tutor to name the four criteria without looking them up
  • Ask them to re-mark one task and justify the band before seeing the teacher's
  • Warning sign: converting criterion bands into percentages
  • Keep the first session within earshot and start on a short commitment

Why converting an MYP criterion band into a percentage gives you the wrong answer

A criterion band is a description of what the work showed, not a score out of a hundred. Divide a band by its maximum and you produce a number the Middle Years Programme never intended to exist. A child sitting at band 4 out of 8 in criterion C is not failing: the descriptor says the work does some things consistently and other things only sometimes, which is an instruction, not a verdict.

Take the Sciences report from earlier: A 6, B 3, C 4, D 7. Those four add to 20 out of 32, and on the published MYP boundary table that total reports as a grade 5. Now do the arithmetic a Mumbai parent does at the kitchen table. Twenty out of 32 reads as 62 and a half per cent, which to anyone raised on ICSE or HSC marksheets sounds like a child in trouble. It is not. A grade 4, which the table places in the middle teens out of 32 and which works out near 47 per cent on that same arithmetic, is what most school policies describe as adequate and on track. A grade 6 begins around 24 out of 32, or 75 per cent, and a 7 needs the high twenties. Ask your school for the boundary table in its assessment policy and keep it next to the report, because the conversion is the single most common reason a parent arrives at a parent evening alarmed about a child who is doing fine.

The boundaries are not intuitive for a second reason: the bands are unequal in width, and the top one is brutal. A 7 needs a near-top band on all four criteria at once, so a child who is strong in three and weak in one lands at a 5 or a 6 and that is the normal shape of a report, not a warning. This is also why different criteria in the same subject is the most useful thing on the page. A 6 in knowing and understanding beside a 3 in inquiring and designing is a diagnosis: the content is in, the scientific method is not. A 7 in using language beside a 4 in analysing says the writing is fluent and the argument is thin. One number cannot tell you that, and a percentage cannot either.

Two more mechanics, then where a tutor genuinely helps. First, criterion levels across a year are generally not averaged: schools apply best fit and usually weight consistent recent performance, so one poor task is not fatal, which is also why your school's policy wording matters. Second, a criterion not assessed in a unit stays blank. Given all that, the useful work in the MYP is not drilling content. It is teaching a child to read the criteria themselves: to open the task-specific clarification before starting, to underline the command term, to self-mark the draft against the strands, and to be able to say which strand they missed. That is what an IB MYP tutor in Mumbai should spend the first month doing, and it is the one habit that keeps paying after the tutor leaves.

  • A criterion band is a best-fit description, not a score out of a hundred
  • Twenty out of 32 is a grade 5; the 62 per cent you calculated means nothing
  • A grade 7 needs near-top bands on all four criteria at once
  • Uneven bands across one subject are a diagnosis, not an inconsistency
  • Schools usually apply best fit rather than averaging criterion levels
  • The tutor's first job is teaching the child to read the criteria themselves

What should MYP progress look like after four weeks, one term and one year?

At four weeks your child should be able to name the four criteria in that subject group, say which band they were given and explain why in their own words. At one term the next report should move the criterion you targeted, not all four. Over a year, bands that hold steady while the tasks get harder are themselves progress, and that is the part nobody tells parents.

The honest limits matter as much. A band can stay at 5 for three terms while the work improves substantially, because a Year 9 investigation asks more than a Year 8 one did and the descriptor is applied to the harder task. Bands are not comparable across years, and comparing your child's Year 7 report with their Year 9 report is the second most common misreading after the percentage conversion. We do not guarantee grades. A tutor also cannot fix a missed-deadline habit on their own: if approaches to learning is where the flag is, the fix is a calendar and a parent, with the tutor supporting it.

While you wait for bands to move, read the written comment, because it carries more information than the number. Look for verbs and conditions. A comment reading that your child needs to state a testable hypothesis and justify the prediction with scientific reasoning is an instruction you can act on this week. A comment reading that your child is a pleasure to teach is pleasant and tells you nothing. Count how many comments name a criterion or a strand; if none do, that is the first question for the parent evening, not a complaint about the grade.

Go to that parent evening with the report, two marked tasks and a list. Teachers in Mumbai schools run these evenings on a few minutes per parent, and the families who get the most out of them ask about criteria rather than about marks. The questions below work in any of the eight subject groups, and you can hand the answers straight to the tutor the same week.

  • Which single criterion would move the grade most this term, and why?
  • Show me one task at a top band and one mid-band for the same criterion
  • Which strands inside the descriptor is my child consistently missing?
  • Does your policy average criterion levels across the year or apply best fit?
  • Which tasks this term are summative, and against which criteria?
  • Is the issue the subject content or an approaches to learning habit?

Booking MYP home tuition in Mumbai: what to have ready for the first session

Five things make the first session useful instead of introductory. The latest report with its criterion bands. Two marked tasks with the teacher's annotation still on them. The task-specific clarification sheets if they were handed out. The school's assessment policy and boundary table from the parent portal. The unit titles for this term, which tell the tutor what is coming rather than what has gone.

The session itself should not be a diagnostic test. The tutor and your child re-mark one of the child's own tasks against the descriptor, strand by strand, award a band, and only then compare it with what the teacher gave. The gap between those two judgements is the lesson. Out of that comes one target: one criterion, one strand, one behaviour to change on the next submission. You get that in writing, in language you can repeat at the dinner table without needing the tutor to translate it.

Then the practical arrangements, which are the ones that break slots. Tell us the society gate protocol and whether visitors need a pass issued each week or a standing entry; a home tutor for MYP subject groups Mumbai schools teach in Grades 6 to 10 is usually coming weekly for a whole term, so a standing arrangement saves everyone twenty minutes. Set the slot against your zone's traffic rather than against the clock, keep a table and a plug point free, and have an adult at home for a younger student. Say upfront which evenings are genuinely impossible.

After each session you get a short note: what was worked on, which criterion it targeted, and what your child should do before the next one. Read it. If after a few weeks the notes are vague or the criteria never get named, that is the signal to change tutors, and you can ask for a replacement without explaining yourself at length. Tell us whether the mismatch was the subject group or the person, and the next shortlist will be different in the right way.

  • Bring the report, two annotated marked tasks and the clarification sheets
  • Download the school assessment policy and boundary table before session one
  • First session: child re-marks their own task, then compares with the teacher
  • One target comes out of it: one criterion, one strand, one habit
  • Agree the gate pass arrangement as a standing weekly entry, not per visit
FAQs

Mumbai tutoring — questions parents ask

My child's MYP report shows 5, 3, 6 and 4 instead of a percentage. What does that mean?+

Those are four criterion bands, one for each of the four criteria in that subject group, and each one describes what the work showed rather than how many marks were scored. Read them as four separate pieces of feedback. In Sciences, for example, a 6 in knowing and understanding beside a 3 in inquiring and designing says the content is learned but the method writing is not. The four bands are then combined into the single subject grade from 1 to 7 using your school's boundary table. Treat the low band as the instruction and ignore the sum until you have read all four.

Can I convert MYP criterion marks into a percentage to compare with my elder child's board marks?+

No, and the conversion will usually frighten you for no reason. A criterion band is a best-fit description of the work, not a proportion of marks earned, so dividing it by its maximum produces a number the programme does not recognise. A criterion total in the middle teens out of 32 works out near 47 per cent on that arithmetic and reports as a grade 4, which most school assessment policies describe as adequate progress. A total around 24 out of 32 is 75 per cent by the same sum and reports as a grade 6. The two systems are not on the same scale and no honest tutor will map one onto the other.

Why did my child get a 7 on one criterion and a 3 on another in the same subject?+

Because the four criteria test genuinely different things, and uneven bands are the most useful information on the report. Each criterion has its own descriptor and its own scale, so a child can be strong in one and weak in another within one subject group. In Language and Literature, a 7 in using language beside a 4 in analysing means the writing is fluent and the argument is thin. In Mathematics, a strong knowing and understanding band beside a weak investigating patterns band means the procedures are secure and the generalising is not. That split tells you what to work on, which a single averaged number never could.

What do IB tuition fees in Mumbai depend on, since you do not publish a rate?+

They depend on five things, and we explain them rather than quote a figure that would be wrong for most families. The subject group and the year, because a Year 5 Design or Arts specialist is scarcer than a Year 6 Mathematics tutor. How scarce that criterion experience is inside your zone, which is why South Mumbai and Navi Mumbai can differ for the same request. Travel distance and evening traffic, since a tutor crossing the Western Express Highway at six is giving up more time than one walking over in Khar West. Session length, and whether you book weekly or fortnightly. Ask for the range for your exact request and you will get one.

Will a home tutor travel to our building in Thane on a weekday evening?+

Yes, if we match you with a Thane-based tutor rather than one crossing in. Ghodbunder Road decides this: station to Kasarvadavali is around twenty minutes off-peak and close to an hour in the evening peak, so a tutor living near Majiwada or Pokhran Road holds a 6pm slot in Hiranandani Estate reliably while a tutor coming from Mulund or Powai does not. Tell us your exact location on the Ghodbunder stretch and two workable evenings, and we will match inside the zone. Mulund tutors sometimes cross over for a later slot, and in the monsoon we agree an online fallback at booking.

Does our society need to issue a gate pass before a home tutor can come in?+

Most Mumbai societies do, and it is worth sorting before the first session rather than at the gate. Many complexes in Powai, Kharghar, Goregaon East and Thane register a weekly visitor once and issue a standing entry for the term, which saves the tutor arguing with security every week. Ask your committee or facility manager which they do, and whether identification has to be left at the gate. The tutor will carry photo identification and can share details in advance. If your society insists on a resident approving each visit through an app, add that approval to your own calendar on the lesson day so the slot does not start fifteen minutes late.

Does online MYP tutoring work as well as home tuition for criterion and marking work?+

For some of it, yes, and for the rest no. Online handles criterion discussion, re-marking a typed draft against the descriptor, and screen-shared graphing or data processing perfectly well. It handles a Design folder, an Arts process journal or a Sciences lab write-up with the teacher's handwritten annotation much worse, because the thing being discussed is physical and half of it never makes it onto the screen. Younger MYP students also drift more online. Our usual answer is a weekly home session on the current task with a short online check before a submission deadline, which keeps the evidence in the room and the deadline supported.

We are in Navi Mumbai. Can you find someone for Design or Arts criteria specifically?+

Sometimes within the node, and honestly not always. Design and the Arts are the two subject groups where qualified MYP markers are scarcest, and in Navi Mumbai that means we look across Vashi, Nerul, Seawoods, Belapur and Kharghar before widening. The Atal Setu and the Harbour Line have made a Mumbai-based tutor more viable for a weekend slot than they used to be, but a weekday evening crossing rarely survives a full term. If nobody local has marked that rubric, we will say so and offer an online specialist instead of sending a general tutor to learn criterion C on your time.

There has been no change on the report after a month of MYP tuition. Is it working?+

A month is usually too early for the report and about right for a different test. Ask your child to name the four criteria, say which band they got and why, and show you where they self-marked a draft before submitting it. If they can do that, the work is landing and the bands will follow on the next assessed task in that criterion, which may simply not have happened yet. If they cannot, the sessions are doing content revision rather than criterion work, and that is a conversation to have this week. Bring us the tutor's session notes and we will read them with you.

The tutor is good but not right for my child. How does a replacement happen?+

Tell us, and say which part was wrong, because that changes who we send next. A criterion mismatch, where the tutor knows the subject but has not marked the criteria your child is weak in, needs a different kind of replacement from a personality mismatch with a quiet Year 7 student. You can request a change after any session, including the first, and you do not owe anyone an explanation beyond that one detail. The next shortlist will name what each tutor has taught so you can see the difference rather than take our word for it. Nothing about the earlier sessions carries over to the new tutor except the notes, which we pass on.

What should I ask my child's subject teacher at the next parent evening?+

Ask about criteria, not about marks, and you will get far more out of a short slot. Which single criterion would move the grade most this term. Which strands inside the descriptor is my child consistently missing. Can you show me one task at a high band and one mid-band for the same criterion so I can see the difference. Does the school average criterion levels across the year or apply best fit. Which of this term's tasks are summative and against which criteria. Finally, is this a subject content problem or an approaches to learning habit, because the answer decides whether you need a tutor or a calendar.

Our tutor taught IGCSE and CBSE for years. Will they understand MYP marking?+

Not automatically, and this is the most common mismatch we see. An experienced IGCSE or CBSE teacher has spent years with mark schemes, model answers and past papers, all of which reward counting marks earned. MYP summatives are set by the school against published criteria, judged on best fit, and there is no national paper bank to work through. A teacher who has not marked against criterion descriptors will often default to content revision, which is why a strong criterion A sits beside a weak criterion B for another term. Ask the tutor directly how many years they have taught or marked the MYP, and ask them to justify a band from a descriptor.

Send the report card, your area and two evenings that genuinely work on a school night. You get a shortlist naming the subject groups and criteria each tutor has taught, not a list of names. Pick one, run a first session at home or online, and read the written note it ends with. If the match is wrong, ask for another tutor.
