How we match an IB MYP tutor in Worli to one child

Most parents who write to us about the Middle Years Programme open with a grade, usually a 4 where the report card once said 6, and almost always in a single subject group. That is the right place to start, because MYP grades are not assembled the way marks were assembled in the system most of us sat ourselves. Before we send you one profile we want to know which criterion the school has been marking down, what the last task sheet actually asked for, and whether the trouble is content the child never understood or a response that never answered the command term. A tutor who begins without that detail spends the first month guessing, and a month is a long time in MYP Year 4. Parents who type best IB tutor in Worli or IB tutors near me Worli into Google are usually asking something narrower than the words suggest: who has actually marked this subject group before.

So the brief comes first. You tell us the year, the subject group, the school, the language of instruction if it is not English, and the last two pieces of written feedback the teacher gave. We then shortlist two or three verified profiles, each one a person who has marked against the criteria for that subject group rather than someone who taught the content elsewhere and is willing to try. You speak to the shortlist on a free discovery call, ask your own questions, and nothing is scheduled until you say yes. There is no charge for the call and no obligation after it.

Geography does the rest of the filtering. We match an IB MYP tutor in Worli from inside the island wherever we can, because South Mumbai is short-distance but slow and a tutor who is late twice stops being a tutor. The one genuine exception is the Bandra side: the Sea Link ramp at the northern end of Worli puts a Bandra-based specialist roughly fifteen minutes away off-peak, which is why Worli is the one locality in Mumbai where a cross-harbour match holds up for a full academic year. For a scarce subject group such as Design or Arts that single ramp often decides whether a match exists at all.

  • 1. Send the brief: year, subject group, school, and the criterion being marked down
  • 2. We shortlist two or three verified profiles who have marked that subject group
  • 3. Free discovery call with each shortlisted tutor, your questions, no obligation
  • 4. You approve one, and the first home session is scheduled around school hours
  • 5. Written criterion feedback at two to four weeks, with a free swap if it is wrong

What do the five MYP years actually ask of a student?

The Middle Years Programme (MYP) runs across five years, from roughly Grade 6 to Grade 10 in Mumbai school language, and it asks for something different in each one. Years 1 to 3 are about building the habit of inquiry: concepts, global contexts, and the Approaches to Learning skills that the Diploma Programme will later assume are already there. Years 4 and 5 are where the programme turns assessable. Tasks get longer, criterion descriptors get more demanding, the personal project arrives in Year 5, and schools begin reporting in a way that parents suddenly recognise as consequential. Most requests for MYP home tuition in Mumbai come in Year 4, which is late but not too late.

What confuses families most is that the International Baccalaureate (IB) does not grade MYP work by adding up marks. Each subject group carries four criteria, A to D, and each is judged on best fit against level descriptors rather than by accumulating points for correct statements. A student can write a page of accurate science and still sit low on the criterion for processing and evaluating data, because accuracy was never what that criterion asked about. Equally, a student who has understood almost nothing can score respectably on a criterion for communication. Reading the grade without reading the criterion breakdown tells you very little, and that is where a good MYP tutor earns the fee.

The second structural feature worth understanding is the interdisciplinary unit and service as action, which sit outside single subjects and are reported separately. They are not optional extras your child can quietly skip, and in Year 5 they compete for calendar space with the personal project. Families in Worli who are also running two evenings of sport or music a week feel that squeeze in November and again in February. A tutor working with IB and IGCSE, Years 1-12 across a family will often flag the clash before the school does, simply because they see the whole week.

  • Years 1-3 build inquiry habits and Approaches to Learning skills, not exam technique
  • Years 4-5 turn assessable, with longer tasks and harder criterion descriptors
  • Four criteria per subject group, judged on best fit against level descriptors
  • Interdisciplinary units and service as action are reported alongside subjects
  • The personal project lands in Year 5, usually against the heaviest term

The eight MYP subject groups and the criteria behind each grade

There are eight MYP subject groups: Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, Arts, Physical and Health Education, and Design. Each one carries its own four criteria, and the labels differ in ways that matter. In Sciences the criteria run from knowing and understanding, through inquiring and designing, to processing and evaluating and finally to reflecting on the impacts of science. In Mathematics the second criterion is investigating patterns, which is the one that catches out strong arithmetic students: they can compute the terms of a sequence and still have no idea how to state a general rule, test it and justify it. An MYP subject groups tutor in Worli who knows that distinction fixes in four sessions what a generalist chips away at for a term.

Language and Literature is marked on analysing, organizing, producing text and using language. A Year 4 student who reads well and writes fluently can lose heavily on the analysing criterion because every paragraph summarises the story instead of arguing about how the writer built it. Individuals and Societies finishes on thinking critically, which rewards the student who can weigh two sources against each other and penalises the one who has memorised both. Design is assessed through a cycle that begins with inquiring and analysing and ends with evaluating, and the process journal carries far more weight in the grade than the finished product the family actually sees on the kitchen table.

This is why we do not offer a single MYP tutor for everything. A specialist in Sciences will not mark a Language Acquisition portfolio well, and a Mathematics tutor who has never read a Design process journal cannot tell your child why their beautiful prototype scored badly. When a family in Worli needs two subject groups covered, the honest answer is usually two tutors on two evenings, or one tutor plus online support for the scarcer group. Command terms are the one thread that runs across all eight: identify, describe, explain, evaluate, and justify each ask for a different shape of answer, and for the current list of terms and criterion wording your child's MYP coordinator or the live subject guide is the only source worth trusting.

  • Sciences: knowing, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, reflecting
  • Mathematics: investigating patterns is where strong calculators still lose marks
  • Language and Literature: analysing beats summarising, every single time
  • Design: the process journal carries the grade, not the finished prototype
  • Command terms decide the shape of the answer across all eight subject groups

Worli, Worli Sea Face, Prabhadevi and Lower Parel: where MYP home tuition runs

Worli sits on the Worli–Annie Besant Road, with Prabhadevi and Mahalaxmi as the nearest stations on either side and the Coastal Road now running along its western edge. A tutor taking a standing weekly slot here is usually covering four pockets at once: Worli itself, Worli Sea Face along the promenade, Prabhadevi just to the north, and Lower Parel across the Annie Besant Road junction. Those four are a single working radius for a tutor on a scooter and four separate scheduling problems in a car at 6.30pm. We ask tutors which of the four they will commit to before we put them on a shortlist, because a tutor who says yes to all of Mumbai is telling you nothing.

Lower Parel is the one that distorts the evening. The mill-land office density around it means the roads in and out are moving against you exactly when a tutor is trying to arrive for a 7pm start, so a Lower Parel family often does better with a 4.45pm slot straight after school than with the slot they first ask for. Worli Sea Face is the opposite case: parking is the constraint rather than traffic, and a tutor who arrives by cab rather than car keeps the slot stable. Prabhadevi families are closest to the station, which makes them the easiest match for a tutor who travels by train from the Western Line.

Inside Worli, most lessons happen in high-rise towers, and the tower decides the logistics more than the address does. Omkar 1973, Indiabulls Blu and Lodha World Towers all run visitor protocols where a repeat tutor is far better off being registered as a standing weekly visitor than re-entered as a guest every Tuesday. We tell tutors to ask for that on day one. The broader reality is that South Mumbai is dense and short-distance but slow: a tutor crossing from Worli to Colaba covers eight kilometres and can still lose forty minutes to the Peddar Road and Haji Ali signals in the evening peak, which is why we match inside the island rather than pulling someone down from the suburbs. The home classes we arrange in Mumbai are built around that arithmetic, not around a map. An IB tutor Mumbai families keep for the full MYP cycle is almost always one who already lives inside their own travel radius.

  • Worli, Worli Sea Face, Prabhadevi and Lower Parel form one tutor radius
  • Lower Parel evenings run against office traffic; an after-school slot holds better
  • Worli Sea Face is a parking problem, not a traffic problem
  • Prabhadevi suits a tutor arriving by train via Prabhadevi or Mahalaxmi
  • Register a repeat tutor as a standing weekly visitor at the tower gate

The Mumbai school calendar an MYP parent plans around

Families in and around Worli send their children to a cluster of international schools that each run the MYP calendar slightly differently. Ryan Global School has a Worli campus; Aditya Birla World Academy sits a short drive away at Tardeo; JBCN International School, Parel is across the bridge to the east. IB Gram is an independent tutoring platform and is not affiliated with any of these schools, nor with any board. We name them because their calendars set the pressure points our tutors actually schedule around, and for no other reason.

The MYP year in Mumbai has a predictable shape. June and July are quiet: units are being introduced, the first summative tasks have not landed, and this is the cheapest and most useful month to start. August and September bring the first round of criterion-marked summatives, and this is when most parents discover a problem. October is report season, immediately followed by the Diwali break, which families treat as rest and schools treat as the midpoint. November and December are the heaviest stretch in Years 4 and 5, with second-round summatives and, for Year 5 students, personal project milestones falling in the same fortnight. January and February carry the personal project exhibition and the interdisciplinary assessments. March and April close out final criterion judgements, and for Year 5 the DP subject selection conversation happens right in the middle of them.

That last overlap is the one worth marking in your own calendar. A Year 5 student in Worli is often being asked to choose Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL) subjects for the Diploma Programme (DP) in the same weeks their personal project report is due and their final MYP criterion grades are being settled. Schools handle it well, but the student is making a two-year decision while under short-term pressure. We usually suggest that an MYP tutor in Mumbai spend one session purely on that choice, with no task to finish, because an hour spent there saves a subject change in DP Year 1.

  • June and July are the quiet months and the best time to start
  • August and September bring the first criterion-marked summative tasks
  • October reports, then the Diwali break that splits the year in half
  • November to December is the heaviest stretch for Years 4 and 5
  • March and April mix final criterion grades with the DP subject choice

Should MYP home classes in Worli be in person or online?

Start in person, and for most MYP students stay there. A home tutor in Worli who sits at the same table as a Year 3 student can see the notebook, the task sheet and the rubric at once, and can watch the student actually attempt a question rather than hear a report of the attempt afterwards. In Years 1 to 3 the thing being taught is largely a working habit, and habits are taught by presence. MYP subject groups home classes Worli families book for younger children almost always work better face to face, and we say so even when online would be easier for us to arrange.

Online earns its place in three specific situations. The first is subject scarcity: a Design or an Arts specialist, or a Language Acquisition tutor for a less common language, may simply not exist within a reasonable drive of Worli, and an IB online tutor in Worli is then better than a generalist in the room. The second is the Year 5 personal project, where much of the real work is supervisor conversation, source hunting and report drafting, all of which travel fine down a video call. The third is the exam-season fortnight, where a twenty-minute screen share to fix one criterion issue beats a cancelled ninety-minute visit. Hybrid, meaning one home session a week plus one short online check-in, is what most of our Worli families settle into by the second term.

The honest trade-offs run both ways. Online loses the ability to read a disengaged thirteen-year-old, which is a real loss in Years 1 to 3 and much less of one by Year 5. It also depends on the student having a working device and a door that closes, which in a shared bedroom is not a given. Home tuition loses time to travel and is more fragile in the monsoon, and it costs more because travel is priced into it. A good IB private tutor Worli parents keep for two years is usually one who will flex between the two formats in the same month rather than insisting on one.

  • In person first for Years 1-3, where the habit matters more than the content
  • Online for scarce subject groups, less common languages, and exam-week fixes
  • Hybrid, one visit plus one short screen session, suits most Year 4-5 families
  • Online needs a device and a door that shuts, not just good bandwidth
  • Monsoon weeks are when a flexible tutor proves they were the right choice

How is an MYP tutor in Mumbai checked before you meet them?

Every tutor we list has had three things confirmed before a profile reaches a parent: who they are, what they studied, and where they have taught. Identity is checked against government photographic identification. Qualifications are checked against the actual degree or teaching certificate, not against a claim in a form. Teaching history is checked by reference, and for MYP specifically we ask whether the person has marked against criteria A to D in the subject group they want to teach, because teaching the content and judging it against a rubric are different skills. A tutor who has only taught a national-curriculum syllabus can be excellent and still be the wrong match for a Year 4 Sciences criterion problem.

There is a layer of checking only you can do, and the discovery call is where you do it. Ask which subject group and which years they have taught, and listen for whether the answer names criteria. Ask what their first session will look like. Ask what they will send you after four weeks. Ask them to describe a student they could not help, because a tutor with no such story has either not taught long or is not telling you the truth. Be wary of anyone who offers a guaranteed grade: no honest tutor can promise a specific MYP level, and we do not guarantee grades either. IB Gram is an independent platform, not affiliated with any school, and the only thing we can commit to is the quality of the match and a free replacement if it is wrong.

Two practical checks matter more in Mumbai than people expect. The first is travel honesty: ask the tutor how they will reach Worli and how long it takes at the hour you want, and treat a vague answer as a red flag, because a tutor who has not thought about the Haji Ali signal will be late in week three. The second is availability depth: a tutor who can offer exactly one slot has no room to reschedule when your child has a school trip, and MYP schedules move. We ask every tutor for a second fallback window before listing them for home tuition in this part of Mumbai.

  • Identity checked against government photographic identification before listing
  • Degree or teaching certificate verified, not accepted as a claim on a form
  • References checked, including whether they have marked criteria A to D
  • You ask on the call: first session plan, four-week deliverable, a failure story
  • Ask for a fallback slot, because MYP school calendars move without warning

The MYP to DP transition: what Year 5 in Mumbai has to get right

The single most common reason a Worli family books MYP help is not a current grade at all. It is the Diploma Programme that starts next June. Parents can see that their child is coping in Year 5 and suspect, correctly, that coping will not be enough once the Diploma Programme (DP) arrives with Internal Assessment (IA) deadlines, the Extended Essay (EE) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK) all running at once. The transition is real, and it has a specific shape: MYP rewards process shown against a rubric, while DP rewards a finished piece of work judged against a published mark scheme and an examination that does not care how the thinking developed.

Three gaps cause most of the trouble. The first is writing at length under time pressure. MYP tasks are often completed over a week with drafting built in; DP Paper 2 in most subjects is not. A student who has never written a full argued response in one sitting discovers this in DP Year 1 October, which is a bad month to discover it. The second is mathematics fluency. MYP Mathematics is generous about calculator use and real-life context; the HL Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches course assumes algebraic manipulation that is quick and automatic, and the gap between those two states is a term of deliberate practice, not a weekend. The third is independent research, which the personal project is supposed to build and which, done honestly, is the best EE preparation available.

What a tutor can usefully do in the last two MYP terms is narrow. We would rather see one hour a week spent on timed writing in the student's weakest subject group, plus a block of algebra drill if the child is heading for a science or mathematics HL, than three hours spread across everything. The personal project should be treated as the research rehearsal it is, which means the student chooses the question, the supervisor supervises, and the tutor stays firmly out of the content. A home tutor for MYP subject groups Mumbai parents hire in Year 5 should be able to tell you, by the end of the first month, which of those three gaps is actually open in their child and which two are not.

  • MYP rewards process against a rubric; DP rewards a finished judged product
  • Timed writing in one sitting is the first gap, and the easiest to close
  • Algebra fluency decides whether HL mathematics is survivable in DP Year 1
  • Treat the personal project as Extended Essay rehearsal, not an extra chore
  • A tutor must never touch personal project content, only the working method

What four weeks of MYP home tuition in Worli should change

At four weeks you are not looking for a grade. You are looking for three concrete things. Your child should be able to tell you which criterion their last task was marked on and what the descriptor above theirs asked for. Their written responses should have started answering the command term rather than retelling what they know. And the tutor should have sent you something in writing: not a progress rating, but a note naming what was worked on, what moved, and what has not moved yet. If none of that has happened in four weeks, the match is wrong and you should say so.

At one term, expect the first visible grade movement, usually of one band in the subject group being worked on, and usually on the criteria that respond to technique rather than to accumulated understanding. Communication and organisation criteria move first. Criteria that depend on genuine conceptual grasp, the knowing and understanding bands in Sciences for instance, move more slowly and sometimes move only after a second term. A tutor who tells you in week six that everything is now fine is managing you, not teaching your child.

At one full MYP year the honest picture is a student who can read a task sheet and work out for themselves what it wants. That is the outcome worth paying for, because it survives the tutor leaving. We will not promise more than that: IB Gram does not guarantee grades, and anyone in Mumbai who does should be asked how they intend to control a best-fit criterion judgement made by someone else's teacher. There is no mechanism by which they could. What we can commit to is that an IB MYP tutor in Worli arranged through us is a checked specialist, that you will hear from us at the review point, and that a replacement costs you nothing if the first match does not work. If a tutor is not working out, tell us at any point: we re-shortlist from your original brief, and there is no lock-in period to serve out first.

  • Four weeks: your child can name the criterion and what the band above wants
  • Four weeks: a written note from the tutor, not a star rating
  • One term: one band of movement, usually on technique-led criteria first
  • One year: the student reads a task sheet without needing it translated
  • A replacement tutor costs nothing, and there is no lock-in to serve out

Starting IB MYP home tuition in Worli, Mumbai

To get a useful shortlist, send four things: the MYP year, the subject group, the school, and a photograph of the last marked task with the teacher's comments visible. That last item is worth more than a paragraph of description, because it shows us the criterion wording and the level the student actually sat at. Add the two evening windows that genuinely work in your week, and whether a 4.45pm slot straight after school is possible, since in Worli and Lower Parel that slot is easier to protect than a 7pm one.

Expect the shortlist within a couple of days for the common subject groups. Sciences, Mathematics, Language and Literature and Individuals and Societies are reasonably well supplied inside South Mumbai. Design, Arts, Physical and Health Education and the less common Language Acquisition options take longer, and this is where the Sea Link matters: a specialist in Bandra who would never commit to Colaba will commit to Worli, because the ramp makes it a fifteen-minute run off-peak. We will tell you plainly if a subject group has no in-person match available rather than sending you a generalist.

The first session has a fixed job, and it is diagnosis. The tutor should spend most of it watching your child attempt work rather than explaining, should look at the last two marked tasks, and should finish by naming one criterion to work on first and one thing to stop doing. You will get a short note after it. Then lessons settle into a rhythm, and at the two to four week mark you get written criterion feedback. Review it properly. The parents who get the most out of IB MYP tutoring in Worli are the ones who read that note and reply to it with a question.

  • Send: MYP year, subject group, school, and a photo of the last marked task
  • Name two workable evening windows, and say if 4.45pm is possible
  • Shortlist in a couple of days for the well-supplied subject groups
  • First session is diagnosis: one criterion to start, one habit to drop
  • Reply to the first written review with a question, not just a thank you
FAQs

Worli tutoring — questions parents ask

What exactly does an IB MYP tutor in Worli do differently from a school teacher?+

A tutor works on one student's criterion gap, which a class teacher of thirty cannot. The teacher sets and marks the task against criteria A to D for the whole group; the tutor takes your child's specific marked response and works backwards from the band they sat in to the band above it. That means reading the descriptor language with the student, rewriting one paragraph against it, and building the habit of checking the rubric before starting. The tutor never sets the grade and should never touch assessed work. Diagnosis, technique and practice are the job.

Can a tutor travel to Worli for a weekday evening slot?+

Yes, and Worli is one of the easier localities in Mumbai for this. Tutors living on the island reach Worli quickly, and the Sea Link ramp at the northern end puts Bandra-based specialists around fifteen minutes away when the traffic is light. The complication is direction rather than distance: a tutor coming through Peddar Road or past Haji Ali in the evening peak can lose a long stretch to signals. We fix this by matching within South Mumbai where possible and by asking for a fallback window. A 4.45pm after-school slot is more reliable than 7pm for most Worli and Lower Parel addresses.

My child is in MYP Year 2 and seems fine. Is tuition premature?+

Usually yes, and we will say so. Years 1 to 3 are where inquiry habits and Approaches to Learning skills are built, and a child who is coping does not need a second adult in the loop. The cases worth acting on early are different: a language of instruction that is not the home language, a specific gap in number fluency that is getting quietly wider, or a child who has stopped reading task sheets. Those are cheap to fix at Year 2 and expensive at Year 4. If what you are seeing is an ordinary dip in one unit, wait a term.

How much does IB MYP home tuition in Worli cost?+

IB tuition fees in Worli depend on five things, and we do not publish a rate because a single figure would be dishonest. Subject scarcity matters most: a Sciences or Mathematics tutor is easier to find in South Mumbai than a Design or Arts specialist, and price follows supply. Year matters, because Year 5 work including personal project support demands more preparation. Session length and frequency matter. Travel matters, which is why a Worli address prices differently from one in Thane. And the tutor's own experience of marking against the criteria matters. On the discovery call you will get a specific figure from the tutor before anything is scheduled.

How does the Year 5 personal project work, and can a tutor help with it?+

The personal project is the student's own extended piece of independent work in MYP Year 5, supervised by a member of school staff and assessed against its own criteria, with a process journal and a report. A tutor can help with the working method and nothing else. That means helping the student narrow a question that is actually answerable, build a realistic timeline against the school's milestone dates, keep the process journal honestly as they go rather than reconstructing it in February, and structure the final report. A tutor who writes, researches or edits content for the project has crossed into academic misconduct. Ask yours where their line is.

Which schools near Worli follow the MYP, and are you connected to them?+

We are not connected to any of them. IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with any school we name. Families in Worli commonly attend Ryan Global School, Aditya Birla World Academy and JBCN International School, Parel, and other IB schools in Mumbai such as Ecole Mondiale World School in Juhu and Oberoi International School run the full Primary Years Programme, MYP and DP pathway. We name them only because their calendars set the assessment pressure points our tutors schedule around. Any tutor who claims an inside relationship with a school is overselling and you should discount it.

What happens at the building gate when a tutor arrives each week?+

Ask your society office to register the tutor as a standing weekly visitor rather than entering them as a fresh guest every time. In Worli towers such as Omkar 1973, Indiabulls Blu and Lodha World Towers that one administrative step removes five to ten minutes of friction from every session and prevents the tutor being turned away when a new guard is on shift. Give the office the name, the phone number and the fixed day and time. Most buildings here handle this routinely. If yours requires a resident call for each entry, tell the tutor so they factor it into their arrival time.

The tutor is good but nothing has changed after a month. What now?+

Tell us, and be specific about what has not changed. The usual cause is a misdiagnosis rather than a bad tutor: the sessions have been teaching content when the problem was command terms, or vice versa. We ask for the tutor's four-week note and your view of it, and in about half these cases the fix is a changed focus with the same person. Where it is not, we re-shortlist from your original brief at no cost and there is no notice period to serve. We do not guarantee grades, so the only promise we make here is that an unproductive match gets replaced rather than defended.

Does online MYP tutoring actually work for a thirteen-year-old?+

Honestly, less well than in person for that age, and we say so before you book. A thirteen-year-old disengages quietly, and a tutor on a screen misses the signs a tutor at the table reads instantly. Online works well for Year 5 students, for personal project supervision conversations, for scarce subject groups where no local specialist exists, and for short fixes during an assessment week. For a Year 2 or Year 3 student who is drifting, book the home sessions. The common compromise in Worli is one visit plus one short online check-in in the same week.

Do you cover Worli Sea Face, Prabhadevi and Lower Parel as well?+

Yes, and we treat them as one tutor radius with three different scheduling characters. Worli Sea Face slots are constrained by parking rather than traffic, so tutors arriving by cab hold their timings better. Prabhadevi is closest to the Prabhadevi and Mahalaxmi stations, which makes it the easiest match for a tutor travelling by train. Lower Parel has the office-hour problem, so an after-school slot beats an evening one. We ask every tutor which of these four pockets they will actually commit to for a full term before we list them, because a tutor who claims all of Mumbai has told you nothing useful.

Should we start now or wait until the next school term?+

Start in June or July if you have the choice. Those are the quiet weeks in the Mumbai MYP calendar, before the first criterion-marked summatives land, and work done then is diagnostic rather than reactive. The expensive time to start is late November, when second-round summatives and Year 5 personal project milestones collide and every tutor in South Mumbai is already booked. If you are reading this in October with a report in your hand, start anyway, but expect the first month to be triage rather than teaching, and expect fewer slot options.
