Mira Road, Western Suburbs, Mumbai
Parents look for an IB MYP home tutor in Mira Road because the report is unreadable. Letters against criteria, no percentage, comments about conceptual understanding. This page explains what Middle Years Programme criteria actually measure, how a tutor turns them into something you can act on, and why the Year 5 transition is the real deadline.

The first question we ask a Middle Years Programme (MYP) parent is not the subject. It is which criterion is weak. The International Baccalaureate (IB) marks MYP work against four named criteria in every subject, and a child can be strong on one and weak on another in the same subject, in the same term, with an overall report figure that hides both. A tutor booked to help with mathematics in general will teach mathematics in general. A tutor told that criterion C is dragging will teach communication of mathematical reasoning, which is a different set of lessons entirely.
Most parents cannot answer that question when they first call, and that is normal rather than a failure. The MYP report is written for teachers and students, not for parents, and the criterion names are abstract. So the second thing we ask for is the report itself plus one piece of marked work, and the tutor reads the criterion grid rather than the summary comment. Within one session a tutor who has marked MYP work can usually tell you which criterion is the problem and what a stronger response to it looks like. That translation is the single most useful thing a tutor does in this programme.
The third question is the year, because MYP Year 1 and MYP Year 5 are entirely different jobs. Years 1 to 3 are about building the habits the programme assumes: taking notes that are usable later, structuring a written response, showing working that someone else can follow. Years 4 and 5 are about the subject groups getting serious and about the personal project, and Year 5 is also where the transition into the Diploma Programme (DP) starts casting a shadow over everything.
Then geography. The pool we work from runs Bhayandar, Mira Road and Dahisar, with Vasai at the edge, and we ask how a tutor travels before we ask how far. The order of events:
1. Send the latest report and one piece of marked work, and tell us the year and subject group. 2. We identify which criterion the evidence actually points at, and confirm it with you. 3. We shortlist two or three verified tutors who have marked MYP work in that subject group and can reach Mira Road at the hour that genuinely exists after the school bus. 4. Free discovery call, then lessons, then a written per-criterion diagnosis inside four sessions.
A request for MYP subject groups IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), Years 1-5 tutor Mumbai spans five years and eight subject groups, which is why we push for the year and the criterion before offering anybody.
The Middle Years Programme runs across five years and organises learning into eight subject groups: Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, Mathematics, Arts, Physical and Health Education, and Design. Every student studies in all eight, which is the first thing that distinguishes the programme from the board systems most families in Mumbai know. There is no early specialisation and no dropping of subjects, so a child who dislikes Design still carries Design, and a child strong only in Mathematics cannot coast on it.
Each subject group is assessed against four criteria, labelled A to D, and the criteria differ by subject. In Mathematics they cover knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. In the Sciences they cover knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. In Language and Literature they cover analysing, organising, producing text, and using language. In Individuals and Societies they cover knowing and understanding, investigating, communicating, and thinking critically. Read them in that order and the design becomes clear: in every subject, roughly one criterion is about content and three are about what you do with it.
Each criterion is marked on its own scale against published descriptors, and the school converts a set of criterion marks into the report grade using boundaries you can ask the MYP coordinator for. Do not take any conversion figure from a website, including this one, because these are revised and vary in how schools apply them across a year. What matters for a parent is the structure rather than the arithmetic: a report grade is an average of four quite different things, so a single number is the least informative part of the document and the criterion grid next to it is the most.
This is also why the programme is so often misread as soft. It is not less demanding than a board syllabus; it is demanding in a way that does not show up as a percentage. A child who can recall everything and cannot investigate, communicate or evaluate will score steadily in the middle across every subject group and look vaguely average, when in fact one specific and teachable skill is missing four times over. IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with Singapore International School, JBCN International School, Borivali, or any school named here. We do not guarantee grades, in this programme or any other.
In practice three criterion failures account for most of the MYP tutoring we arrange in Mumbai. The first is communication. A student understands the work and presents it in a form a marker cannot credit: unlabelled diagrams, no units, conclusions with no reference to the question, mathematical working that jumps three steps. This is the commonest single failure in the programme and the fastest to repair, because it is a formatting and habit problem rather than a knowledge problem.
The second is investigation and inquiry design. Asked to design a method or investigate a pattern, students produce either a copied procedure or an aimless one. In Mathematics the investigation criterion wants a pattern described, generalised and justified, and students stop after describing. In Sciences the inquiring and designing criterion wants a method that controls what it claims to control, and students write a recipe. This takes longer to fix than communication and it is the criterion that predicts Diploma Programme difficulty most accurately.
The third is critical thinking and evaluation, which in Individuals and Societies and in Sciences is where the top marks live. A student summarises a source instead of weighing it, or states that an experiment had errors without saying which, why, or what the consequence for the conclusion is. Teaching this is slow, incremental work and it is the main reason to start in Year 3 or 4 rather than in the middle of Year 5.
Year 5 adds the personal project, which is a substantial independent piece with its own criteria, a supervisor at school and a process journal that is genuinely part of the assessment. Most of what goes wrong with it is scope and documentation rather than ability: a goal too large to finish, a product chosen before any research, or a journal written retrospectively in a weekend, which markers can see. A tutor can help a student interrogate a goal for feasibility, understand the criteria, keep the journal honestly as the work happens, and rehearse the reflection. A tutor cannot choose the goal, make the product or write the report, and we do not allow it, because schools authenticate this work and know what a student's own voice sounds like. Take the deadlines and current requirements from your school's MYP coordinator.
There is a specific local reason to be deliberate about all of this. MYP subject groups home classes Mira Road families book are often booked because the child has nothing to revise from. The programme does not run on a single prescribed textbook, so a student who missed the nuance of a classroom discussion while tired after a long bus ride from Dahisar or Borivali cannot go home and read the chapter, because there is no chapter. The classroom is the source. That makes a tutor who can reconstruct what the lesson was trying to do more valuable here than in a board system where a book covers the gap, and it is the commonest reason an IB MYP home tutor in Mira Road is booked in the first place.
Mira Road, Bhayandar, Dahisar and Vasai work as one matching area along the Western Line, anchored by Mira Road station, and for MYP work this geography has a particular consequence. MYP tutoring is usually about habits rather than about exam content, and habits need an uninterrupted weekly slot over months. A tutor who cancels twice a month because the Western Express Highway was slow will not change how a thirteen-year-old takes notes, however good they are in the room.
That is why we weight train commuters so heavily here. A tutor coming in from Bhayandar, Dahisar or Borivali on the line arrives inside a window you can build a routine around. One stop from Bhayandar is the most dependable arrangement available to a Mira Road family, and for MYP in particular the dependability matters more than the credential, because almost any competent subject teacher can mark against criteria once shown the grid, while nobody can build a habit in a child they see twice a month.
Dahisar matters for a different reason. The international-board schools are there and to the south, so tutors based in Dahisar are the likeliest to have actually marked MYP work in a school rather than learned the criteria from a document. They can also often take the quiet slot straight after the school day, which for a Years 1 to 3 student is a much better hour than 7pm when attention has gone. Vasai works for weekend sessions and poorly for weekday evenings, and we will tell you which a Vasai-based tutor is being offered for.
The general rule in the Western Suburbs of Mumbai is to match along the Western Line rather than across it. A tutor moving Khar to Santacruz, or Malad to Kandivali, makes a short predictable hop. A tutor asked to travel from Bandra or Andheri up to Mira Road makes a journey that holds in June and fails by the time the personal project deadline is close. Parents searching IB tutors near me Mira Road are asking the right thing, and for a habit-building programme like the MYP, proximity is close to the whole argument. In practice almost every IB MYP home tuition in Mira Road match we make comes from inside these four areas.
The international-board year in Mumbai, Maharashtra opens in June, and the MYP calendar is shaped by units rather than by exams, which is why it catches parents out. Each subject group runs a sequence of units, each with its own assessed task against specific criteria, and those tasks are spread through the year rather than concentrated in an exam week. The consequence is that there is no single moment when everything is at stake and also no single moment when nothing is. A child who drifts for a term has quietly lost assessed tasks that cannot be retaken.
The first report usually arrives in the autumn and is where most MYP enquiries from Mira Road begin, because it is the first time a parent sees the criterion grid for the year. October and November are heavy with unit tasks across several subject groups at once, and for a child commuting out to Dahisar or Borivali this is the period when tiredness turns into missed detail. The new year brings the second cycle of units, and in Year 5 it brings the personal project into its decisive phase.
Year 5 ends with the Diploma Programme decision, and this is the real deadline in the programme. Subject and level choices for DP are made on MYP evidence: which subjects a student has shown they can investigate and evaluate in, not just recall. A student with a strong knowledge criterion and a weak investigation criterion across the sciences is being set up for a difficult Higher Level science choice, and the time to notice that is Year 4, not the DP1 autumn. This is the argument for starting MYP tutoring early that parents most often accept once it is put plainly.
Children from this corridor travel out for international-board schooling, and Singapore International School and JBCN International School, Borivali appear repeatedly in enquiries from here. They are named as local context only, and IB Gram has no relationship with either or with any school. What a tutor does with a school's unit calendar is read it and work backwards from the next assessed task, which is a far better use of a term than generalised revision in a programme that does not examine at the end.
For MYP, and especially for Years 1 to 3, home tuition is not just the lead option but usually the only one that works. The job is habit formation in a twelve or thirteen year old: how a page is laid out, whether a diagram is labelled, whether the working can be followed, whether the folder has anything in it. A tutor in the room sees all of that and corrects it as it happens. On a screen a younger student presents a tidied artefact and the untidiness you were paying to fix stays invisible. A home tutor also sees whether homework is being done at a desk or on a sofa with a phone nearby, which for this age group is frequently the actual problem.
Online becomes genuinely useful from Year 4 upwards, and in Mira Road it matters more than it would further south in Mumbai. The suburb sits beyond the municipal boundary and the international-board schools are in Dahisar, Borivali and further down the line, so tutors who have marked MYP work mostly live closer to those schools and the local pool is thinner than demand. Online tutoring consequently takes a much larger share here than in Andheri or Bandra. For a specific subject group with few local specialists, Design or a language acquisition subject for instance, an IB online tutor in Mira Road may be the only person available who has actually marked against the right criteria.
Hybrid is the sensible arrangement for a Year 4 or Year 5 student, and the split follows the criteria. The in-person session carries communication work, folder and note discipline, and anything involving diagrams or constructions. The online session carries investigation planning, source analysis, personal project check-ins and written feedback on drafts, all of which transfer well to a screen. It also keeps the week going when a monsoon evening closes the road, which in this part of the city happens often enough to plan for.
The trade-offs honestly. Home tuition costs more because travel is unpaid time. Online needs a parent to be nearby for a younger child, a device that is not a phone, and a tutor who insists on seeing the actual handwritten work through a camera rather than accepting a typed summary. Hybrid doubles the coordination. And none of the three changes anything unless the habits are practised in the six days between sessions, which for this age group usually means a parent checking the folder once a week rather than supervising homework nightly.
Our checks are specific. Government identity confirmed. Degree confirmed in the subject area. Evidence of having taught and, for the MYP specifically, marked work against the programme's criteria, which means a school, a cohort and real assessed tasks rather than familiarity with a document. References where there has been school employment. And a written record of anything we could not confirm, shown to you, because in this programme the gap between knowing a subject and having marked its criteria is exactly where a disappointing match comes from.
That distinction deserves emphasis. A strong mathematics teacher from a board system can teach MYP mathematics content competently and still have no idea what the investigating patterns criterion rewards. We ask about it directly and we tell you the answer. We publish no grade averages, no student counts and no pass rates, because they would describe other children and predict nothing. Every IB MYP home tutor in Mira Road we introduce goes through the same checks, and we will say on the call which applied and which did not. We do not guarantee grades.
The questions you should ask are short and they sort candidates quickly. Which subject group and which years have you marked. Which criterion do students in this subject lose most marks on, and why. What would you look at in the first session. How do you work with the school's own task instructions rather than around them. And what will you send me after four weeks. A tutor who answers the second question with a specific criterion and a reason has marked real work; a tutor who answers with a general statement about conceptual understanding has not.
Two household things are worth settling in week one. The society visitor process, because a tutor negotiating at the gate every week loses minutes from each session and eventually gives up a far-north slot; one request to the committee normally puts a regular weekly visitor on a standing list. And where the sessions happen, which for a younger student matters more than it does for a Diploma student. A table in a quiet room with the folder, the laptop closed unless needed, and no television in earshot. For MYP work the room is part of the intervention, because half of what you are buying is a model of what working properly looks like.
This is the question that should drive most MYP tutoring decisions and almost never does, because the consequences arrive two years after the cause. The Diploma Programme assumes a set of skills the MYP was designed to build: designing an investigation, processing data honestly, structuring an extended piece of writing, evaluating a source, and documenting a process as it happens. A student who reached the end of Year 5 with a decent report and none of those skills will meet all of them at once in DP1, in six subjects simultaneously, alongside the Extended Essay (EE) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK).
The specific mapping is worth knowing when you decide where to spend a term. Weak investigation criteria in Sciences predict trouble with the Diploma scientific investigation. Weak communication criteria in Mathematics predict lost method marks in Diploma mathematics, where unexplained working earns nothing. Weak critical thinking in Individuals and Societies predicts a struggle with the Extended Essay, which is largely an exercise in evaluating sources at length. Weak organising and producing text in Language and Literature predicts difficulty with every written assessment in the Diploma. None of this is mysterious, and all of it is visible on a Year 4 report if someone reads the grid rather than the average.
So the most useful MYP tutoring is often not in the subject the parent is worried about. A child struggling in Diploma-bound Chemistry may be best served by work on the processing and evaluating criterion in Sciences and the communication criterion in Mathematics, which will pay off in three subjects rather than one. That is a conversation worth having on the discovery call, and a tutor who can have it is worth more than one who simply teaches the next unit faster.
What this costs depends on the usual five things, and no one should quote before asking them. What IB tuition fees in Mira Road depend on is the year, the subject group, how scarce that combination is locally, how far the tutor travels and how long the session runs. A Year 5 personal project supervision arrangement with a tutor travelling from Borivali sits at one end of any range in Mumbai; a Year 2 online hour with a Bhayandar-based tutor sits at the other. Nobody can honestly name the best IB tutor in Mira Road without knowing the year, the criterion and the travel distance, and a platform that quotes a figure first is inventing it.
A final point for families in this corridor. With the school a long bus ride away in Dahisar or Borivali, you have no informal access to the subject teachers and the criterion grid is the whole of your information. A tutor who reads that grid, works against the school's own task instructions and reports back in the same criterion language partly replaces a channel that families living near their school get at the gate for nothing. In a programme this hard for parents to read, that translation is most of the value.
At four weeks you should have a per-criterion diagnosis and one visible habit change. The diagnosis names the weak criterion in the subject group, quotes the descriptor, and shows a before and after on a real piece of your child's work. The habit change is usually presentational: labelled diagrams, working written in steps, a conclusion that refers back to the question. These are small things that markers reward immediately, which is why they come first. What should not be expected is a changed report grade, because the next assessed task may be against a different criterion entirely.
Over one reporting cycle, the movement should show up in the grid rather than in the average. A criterion that was consistently low should rise, and the average may move less than you expect because the other three criteria did not change. This is where MYP parents most often misjudge progress: an unchanged overall grade with one criterion clearly improved is a successful term, and a tutor who shows you the grid is being more honest than one who talks about the child being happier.
Over a year, and particularly across Years 3 to 5, the thing to look for is transfer. Does the investigation skill taught in Sciences appear in the Mathematics investigation task without being retaught. Does the source evaluation learned in Individuals and Societies show up in a Language and Literature response. Transfer is the whole design intent of the programme and it is the best single indicator that tutoring has done something durable rather than rehearsed one task.
Two limits plainly stated. We do not guarantee grades, in the MYP or anywhere else, and we do not allow a tutor to promise a criterion outcome or a Diploma place. And matches sometimes fail, which with this age group is usually about rapport rather than competence: a twelve year old who will not admit confusion to a particular adult cannot be taught by that adult, however well qualified. Tell us at the two-to-four week review. We shortlist a replacement from the same verified pool anywhere in Mumbai, you keep the written diagnosis, and there is nothing to exit and no fee for leaving.
Three things make the first call productive, and you already have all of them. The most recent report, including the criterion grid rather than just the summary page. One piece of marked work with the teacher's comments on it, ideally an assessed unit task rather than a homework sheet. And the year, the subject group and the two afternoons or evenings that genuinely exist once your child is back from Dahisar or Borivali and has eaten something.
The discovery call is free and you are talking to the tutor, not to a salesperson. Ask which criterion they think the evidence points at and why. Ask which years and subject groups they have marked. For a Year 5 family, ask what they will and will not do on the personal project, and expect a clear line rather than a reassuring one. Ask what arrives after four weeks and in what form.
Session one should involve your child's own work rather than a textbook. A good tutor reads the marked task, asks the student to explain what they thought the task was asking, and then has them redo one part against the descriptor. That exercise usually produces the diagnosis on its own, and it is far more useful than an hour of teaching the next unit. Expect a short, direct summary at the end that names a criterion. That is how every IB MYP home tuition in Mira Road arrangement we set up opens.
After that it is a weekly fixed slot, a standing gate entry sorted in the first week, and a review with us at two to four weeks against what you originally asked for. Families looking for a home tutor for MYP subject groups Mumbai wide go through this same process. In Mira Road we hold the travel question harder than elsewhere, because for habit work an unreliable slot does not just delay progress, it undoes it.
Each subject group is marked against four criteria labelled A to D, and they differ by subject: in Sciences they cover knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on impacts, while in Mathematics they cover knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. The school converts the set into a report grade using published boundaries, which you should get from the MYP coordinator rather than from any website. The grid is the useful part of the document; the single grade is an average of four different skills and hides the problem.
Yes, and for a Years 1 to 3 student that earlier slot is usually better than an evening one, because attention has gone by 7pm. The most dependable arrangement is a tutor based in Bhayandar or Dahisar who commutes on the Western Line, since the train arrives inside a predictable window whatever the Western Express Highway is doing. For habit work the reliability matters more than the credential: nobody changes how a thirteen year old takes notes while cancelling twice a month. We confirm travel mode and departure time before shortlisting anyone.
Yes, and it is one reason MYP tutoring is in demand in this corridor specifically. The programme is built on units designed by the school rather than on a single prescribed textbook, so the classroom is the primary source. A child who was tired after a long bus ride from Dahisar or Borivali and missed the point of a discussion cannot go home and read the chapter, because there is no chapter. A tutor who works from the school's own task instructions can reconstruct what the unit was trying to do, which a textbook-based tutor cannot.
Process help, not product help, and we put the line in writing before lessons start. A tutor can help your child interrogate a goal for feasibility, understand the criteria, plan a realistic timeline, keep the process journal honestly as the work happens, and rehearse the reflection. A tutor cannot choose the goal, make the product, write the report or reconstruct a journal after the fact, which markers can see anyway. The supervisor at school owns the project. Take deadlines and current requirements from your MYP coordinator rather than from any website.
Because a middling grade in every subject group often means one specific skill is missing four times over, and the average conceals it. A student who recalls well and investigates poorly will sit steadily in the middle everywhere and meet real trouble in the Diploma Programme, where investigation and evaluation carry much of the mark. Weak investigation criteria in Year 4 Sciences are the clearest early warning available for Diploma science difficulty. Reading the grid rather than the average is free, and it is the single most useful thing a parent can do in this programme.
Usually communication, because it is the commonest failure, the fastest to repair, and it pays off in every subject group at once. Unlabelled diagrams, missing units, working that jumps steps and conclusions that never refer back to the question all cost marks a student has already earned by understanding the content. Investigation and critical thinking are slower, and worth starting earlier for that reason: if your child is in Year 3 or 4, those are the ones with time to mature before the Diploma Programme choices are made in Year 5.
Rarely well. The work at that stage is habit formation, and a screen receives a tidied artefact rather than showing how the page was actually produced. A home tutor sees the unlabelled diagram as it is drawn, the folder with nothing in it, and whether homework happens at a desk or on a sofa next to a phone. From Year 4 online becomes genuinely useful, particularly for scarce subject groups where few local tutors have marked the right criteria, and most Mira Road families with older MYP children end up running one session of each.
Five things, and we will ask before quoting. The year, since Year 5 with a personal project is different work from Year 2. The subject group, because Design and some language acquisition subjects are scarcer locally. Local scarcity at the hour you want. Travel distance, because a trip up from Borivali is unpaid time somebody absorbs. And session length. A Year 5 project supervision arrangement in person and a Year 2 online hour with a Bhayandar-based tutor sit at opposite ends of any range quoted anywhere in Mumbai.
Yes, and the four areas work as one pool along the Western Line. What differs is dependability by hour. A Bhayandar-based tutor is the steadiest choice for a Mira Road weekday slot. A Dahisar-based tutor is the likeliest to have marked MYP work in a school and can often take the quiet hour straight after the school day, which suits younger students. A Vasai-based tutor works for weekend sessions and not for weekday evenings. We say which category a tutor falls into before you agree a slot.
Be in the flat rather than in the room, at least for the first few weeks. For this age group the closing two-minute summary is the most useful part of the week for you, because it tells you which criterion is being worked on and what to look for in the folder. Sitting in the room tends to make a twelve year old perform rather than admit confusion, which is the opposite of what the session needs. What matters more is the space: a table in a quiet room, with no television in earshot.
Not too late to inform the choice, which is the most valuable thing tutoring can do at this point. Several weeks of work against the investigation and communication criteria in the subjects your child is considering at Higher Level will tell you something real about whether those choices are sustainable. That is worth more than pushing a report grade up by a fraction. We do not guarantee grades or Diploma outcomes, and a tutor who claims to secure a particular subject combination is overreaching badly.
Raise it at the two-to-four week review rather than waiting. At this age the limiting factor is almost always whether the child will admit confusion to that particular adult, and if they will not, no amount of subject expertise helps. This is a rapport issue and nobody's fault. We shortlist a replacement from the same verified pool, you keep the per-criterion diagnosis already written, and there is no package to exit and no fee for leaving. It is a routine event rather than a complaint.
Send us the year, the subject group, the latest report with its criterion grid and one marked unit task, plus the afternoons or evenings that genuinely exist once your child is home. We will tell you which criterion the evidence points at, shortlist two or three verified tutors who have marked that subject group and can reach Mira Road at that hour, and set up a free discovery call. Nothing is charged until you agree, and a per-criterion diagnosis follows inside four sessions.
