IB & IGCSE Tutors for American School of Bombay Students

Finding an IB and IGCSE tutor for American School of Bombay students in Mumbai usually starts mid-pathway: a family lands in Bandra Kurla Complex in October and a teenager walks into the first year of the IB Diploma Programme three units behind. IB Gram matches home tuition to what that student has actually covered, not to what the syllabus assumes.

How does IB Gram match a tutor to an American School of Bombay student in Mumbai?

IB Gram starts from three facts: the subject list your child is actually sitting, the week they joined the class, and the hour at which someone can realistically ring your doorbell. Those three produce a shortlist of tutors who have taught those exact Diploma Programme (DP) courses and who live close enough to hold the slot through a full term. You meet one tutor before anything is booked. The first session is a diagnostic rather than a sales lesson, and it ends with a written list of what the student has and has not covered.

A mid-pathway request is different from an ordinary tuition request, and it is treated differently. A parent looking for an IB and IGCSE tutor for American School of Bombay students in Mumbai in late October is rarely asking for general help with Chemistry. They are asking someone to work out, quickly, which parts of a half-finished Higher Level (HL) course were already covered in Houston or Singapore, which were covered in a different order, and which were never covered at all. That audit is the job, and it has to happen before anybody plans lessons.

Travel shapes the shortlist as much as subject expertise does. Families attached to the school mostly live in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) itself, in Bandra East behind the complex, across the tracks in Bandra West, or in Santacruz East towards the airport. A tutor based along the Bandra station corridor or near a Metro Line 3 stop can hold a 6.30pm weekday slot all term. One coming from Mulund cannot, whatever their subject record, and a slot that quietly collapses in week five does more damage to a new arrival than no tutor at all.

  • 1. Send the subject list, the year group and the week your child joined.
  • 2. We shortlist by subject match first, then by travel time to your area.
  • 3. You meet one tutor, on a call or at home, before anything is booked.
  • 4. The first session diagnoses against what the class has already covered.
  • 5. You receive a written gap list and an order of work for six weeks.

IB Diploma, Middle Years Programme and IGCSE: what transfers when a student moves mid-pathway

The American School of Bombay publicly offers the IB Diploma Programme at its BKC campus, so a student arriving in the eleventh year is joining a two-year course that is already running. What transfers from a previous school is content. What rarely transfers is assessment literacy. A student who finished an honours Chemistry course in a United States high school may know stoichiometry well and have never once been marked against a criterion descriptor. Those are separate gaps, they fail in separate ways, and they need separate work.

Arrivals come from three broad pre-Diploma routes. Students from the Middle Years Programme (MYP) arrive used to criterion-referenced marking, inquiry questions and the personal project, so the vocabulary of Diploma assessment is familiar even where content is thin. Students from Cambridge International Education's IGCSE arrive with strong examination technique, a habit of past-paper practice and clean notation, but often no experience of extended independent writing. Students from an American middle and high school arrive with the widest content spread and the strongest classroom discussion habits, and the least exposure to externally moderated coursework of any of the three.

The Diploma core is where the gap is widest and least visible. Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the Extended Essay (EE) and the creativity, activity and service strand have no close equivalent in most American curricula, and a student who joins late can be an entire term behind on the Extended Essay supervision cycle while looking perfectly settled in lessons. Families moving the other way, out of the Diploma and into an IGCSE school in Mumbai at Years 9 to 11, meet the mirror problem: choosing between the Core and Extended tiers in Mathematics and the sciences, where the Core tier caps the top grade available and the decision is awkward to reverse later.

  • MYP arrivals know the criteria language; content depth is the usual gap
  • IGCSE arrivals have exam technique but little extended independent writing
  • American-curriculum arrivals have content spread and no criterion-marking habit
  • The Diploma core, TOK and the Extended Essay, is the quietest gap of all
  • Core or Extended tier matters for anyone moving into IGCSE Years 9 to 11

Subject choice, Higher Level and Standard Level, and the internal assessment behind each one

A Diploma student takes six subjects across the subject groups, three at Higher Level (HL) and three at Standard Level (SL), alongside TOK, the Extended Essay and the service strand. Every one of those six carries an Internal Assessment (IA): a piece of work marked by the teacher and moderated externally. For a student who joined in October, the IA calendar is the real pressure, because those deadlines were set before they arrived and do not move for them. Some families want one home tutor for all IB and IGCSE subjects in Mumbai; in practice one person covers a cluster, not all six.

The internal assessments do not resemble each other. In the sciences the IA is a scientific investigation assessed on research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, which means the question has to be narrow enough to produce usable data in a school laboratory. In Mathematics it is an exploration, marked partly on personal engagement and reflection, which is where capable mathematicians with nothing to say lose marks. In History it is an investigation with a source-evaluation section and a reflection on method. In Language A it is an individual oral built on a global issue and two extracts. A tutor who has supervised the specific one your child is sitting is worth considerably more than a strong generalist.

Subject choice is often still open for a late arrival, and it deserves one honest conversation before the term hardens. Moving a subject from Higher Level to Standard Level in week six is a legitimate decision when the content gap is structural rather than a matter of effort, and it beats discovering the same problem in February with an IA half-written. A family asking for all IB and IGCSE subjects needs tutor cover in Mumbai that stretches across both boards at once: one request that spans all IB and IGCSE subjects from IGCSE Years 9-11 tutor cover in Mumbai up to Diploma Higher Level, usually because an older and a younger child sit at different stages in the same flat.

  • Sciences: a scientific investigation marked on design, analysis, conclusion and evaluation
  • Mathematics: an exploration where personal engagement and reflection carry real marks
  • History: an investigation with source evaluation and a reflection on method
  • Language A: an individual oral built on a global issue and two extracts
  • IGCSE: settle the Core or Extended tier early, coursework components earlier still

Home tuition in BKC, Bandra East and across Mumbai

Families at the school are concentrated in a tight ring. Bandra Kurla Complex itself holds the service apartments and company-leased flats that relocating families land in, Bandra East sits directly behind the complex, Bandra West is a short crossing away and holds most of the longer-staying families, and Santacruz East covers the stretch towards the domestic terminal. An IB and IGCSE home tutor in Mumbai working this ring can usually reach any of the four inside twenty minutes off-peak. Bandra station anchors the Western Line side, and Metro Line 3 has made the run down from the northern suburbs and across from the island city far more predictable than the Western Express Highway ever was.

Beyond that ring, IB Gram matches across Mumbai, Maharashtra as a whole, because relocating families do not always land where they expect to. In South Mumbai, tutors are placed within the island for Worli, Cuffe Parade and Peddar Road addresses, since the Coastal Road helps a north to south run but the Haji Ali and Peddar Road signals still swallow an evening. In the Western Suburbs, through Khar, Santacruz West, Juhu, Andheri and up to Malad and Kandivali, matching along the Western Line and Metro Lines 2A and 7 holds; matching across it does not. In the Central Suburbs, Powai and Chandivali hang off the JVLR with no station of their own, while Ghatkopar and Mulund sit on the Central Line.

The Eastern Suburbs run from Chembur and Wadala through Vikhroli to Bhandup, served by the Harbour Line and the Eastern Express Highway, with the Eastern Freeway putting South Mumbai closer than the map suggests. Navi Mumbai works node to node, through Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar and Panvel along Palm Beach Road, and the Atal Setu now brings the island city within reach for a weekend session rather than a weekday one. In Thane, Pokhran Road and Ghodbunder Road set the schedule, and a tutor living near Thane station reaches Kasarvadavali quickly off-peak and slowly at seven in the evening. All IB and IGCSE subjects home classes across Mumbai are matched on this logic: zone first, subject second.

  • BKC, Bandra East, Bandra West and Santacruz East share one evening slot pattern
  • Bandra station and Metro Line 3 make the BKC run genuinely predictable
  • Sea Link slots work from Worli if they are booked before the evening peak
  • Metro Line 1 links Versova, Andheri and Ghatkopar for east to west runs
  • Navi Mumbai and Thane tutors are matched node to node, not across the creek

The BKC calendar American School of Bombay families plan around

IB Gram is an independent tutoring platform and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to the American School of Bombay in any way. Tutors are placed for families whose children attend it, the school's published calendar is read here exactly as any parent reads it, and there is no access to its staff, its internal materials or its assessment schedule. Anything specific about a deadline should come from your child's homeroom teacher or the parent portal rather than from a tutoring platform, and a tutor who claims inside knowledge of a school is telling you something about themselves.

What can be described is the rhythm of the Diploma year as the International Baccalaureate sets it for the May examination session, which is the session most Mumbai international schools sit. The first Diploma year runs fairly quietly until around March, when internal assessment drafts begin landing. The second year is front-loaded: between November and February most schools collect science and mathematics IA drafts, run mock examinations and push the Extended Essay towards final submission, while the TOK essay moves through its prescribed-title cycle in the same window. March and April are consolidation and study leave, examinations run through May, and results arrive in July.

BKC holds other IB schools, including Dhirubhai Ambani International School and Ascend International School, and families comparing options often end up with children at more than one of them. That matters practically rather than competitively: two schools inside the same complex can run the same programme on different internal deadlines, so a tutor working with siblings plans two calendars instead of one. The useful move for any newly arrived family is to ask the school for its own assessment calendar inside the first fortnight, mark the weeks where an IA draft, a mock and a TOK deadline overlap, and concentrate tutoring intensity around those weeks instead of spreading it evenly across the year.

  • Ask the school for its own assessment calendar in your first fortnight
  • Mark the weeks where an IA draft, a mock and TOK collide
  • The May session sets external deadlines; each school sets its internal ones
  • Siblings at two BKC schools mean two calendars, not one
  • No inside access here: the published calendar is all any platform should use

Is home tuition or online better for a Mumbai family that may relocate again?

Home tuition first, with the online option built in from the start if another move is possible. A tutor in the room reads a teenager better than a screen does, and that matters most in the weeks straight after a relocation, when a student will often not say what they do not understand. A family posted here on a two or three year assignment should still set the arrangement up so it survives a departure, which means the same tutor is already comfortable on a shared whiteboard long before anyone needs them to be.

Online genuinely works for some things and genuinely does not for others. An IB and IGCSE online tutor in Mumbai can run Economics, Business Management, History, English and most of Mathematics well, because the material is text, graphs and worked solutions that a tablet handles properly. Scientific investigation planning, Visual Arts and any subject where a student needs to be watched while they work are weaker online. Higher Level Mathematics with a struggling student is the hardest case of all, because the tutor cannot see the page at the moment the error happens. Hybrid resolves most of it: one home session a week for the difficult teaching and one online session for review and homework checking.

For a family that may move again, the practical arrangement is to keep an IB and IGCSE private tutor in Mumbai in the home slot while the student is here, then convert that same person to online for the final stretch of the Diploma rather than changing tutors mid-course. A student who moves country in the second Diploma year keeps continuity through the IA and Extended Essay deadlines, which is the part of the course where a handover costs the most. Time zones are the only real constraint, and a tutor here can usually hold an early morning or a late evening slot for a family that has moved west.

  • Home sessions carry the first weeks after a move most reliably
  • Online suits Economics, History, English and most Mathematics review work
  • Practical planning and weak Higher Level Maths need someone in the room
  • Hybrid: one home session for teaching, one online for checking work
  • Set the online habit early so a relocation does not break continuity

How is a home tutor in Mumbai checked before the first session?

Every tutor is identity-checked, their qualifications are seen rather than taken on trust, and they are asked for specific evidence of teaching the exact course and not merely the subject. For an IB and IGCSE tutor for American School of Bombay students in Mumbai, that means naming the syllabus version they last taught and when, describing how a particular IA criterion is applied in practice, and talking through a real student they took from a weak draft to a submitted one. References from previous families are requested wherever a tutor has them.

Do your own checking as well, because you can test things a platform cannot. Ask the tutor to mark one paragraph of your child's existing work against the published criterion and explain the mark out loud. Ask which command terms the subject uses and what separates describe from explain, and explain from evaluate. Ask what they would do in the first four weeks, and listen for whether you are hearing a plan or a script. Parents searching IB and IGCSE tutors near me in Mumbai mostly end up comparing profiles, and profiles all read the same; a fifteen-minute conversation separates them properly.

Access is part of verification in Mumbai. BKC towers and Bandra East societies run visitor registers, several want a photograph and an identity document at the gate, and a standing weekly entry is far smoother than a fresh approval every Tuesday evening. Arrange that standing pass in the first week rather than the fourth. Sessions should happen in a shared space with the door open, with an adult or trusted house staff at home, and a parent in earshot for the first few. That is ordinary practice rather than suspicion, and any tutor worth booking will expect it and say so first.

  • Identity and qualifications seen directly, not described on a profile
  • Subject evidence: syllabus version, criterion knowledge, a real student example
  • Ask the tutor to mark one paragraph and justify the mark aloud
  • Arrange a standing society gate pass during the first week
  • Sessions in a shared room, door open, an adult at home

Closing a mid-pathway gap: a worked example of a Diploma arrival from an American curriculum

Take a student who joins the first Diploma year in BKC in the last week of October, arriving from a United States high school where she finished an honours Chemistry course and a second year of algebra. She is taking Chemistry at Higher Level, Mathematics Analysis and Approaches at Standard Level, English, Economics, Spanish and Environmental Systems. Her previous reports look fine, which is exactly why nobody at school is worried yet. The first diagnostic session runs two hours and splits into three parts: a content audit against what the class has already covered, an assessment-literacy audit, and a command-term audit. None of it is teaching. All of it is finding out what is actually missing.

The content audit finds that stoichiometry and the mole concept are solid, bonding is patchy, and atomic structure with ionisation energy trends was never covered to the depth Higher Level expects, which matters because energetics later leans on it. The assessment-literacy audit finds she has written laboratory reports with a results and discussion structure, but has never justified a methodology, quantified uncertainty, or been marked on evaluation as a criterion in its own right. The command-term audit finds she treats describe and explain as synonyms, which quietly costs marks in every paper she sits. In Mathematics, functions are strong, radian measure and the ambiguous case of the sine rule are absent, and differentiation has not begun.

The plan that follows is ordered by dependency rather than by chronology. Two home tuition sessions a week: a weekday evening that keeps pace with the class so the gap stops widening, and a Saturday morning that backfills in dependency order, atomic structure before bonding before energetics. The assessment-literacy work is folded into the class-pace session rather than taught as a separate topic, by marking her real homework against the real criteria each week. Week four is a review point with a written note on what closed and what did not. By the February IA draft she is not ahead of her classmates, but she is writing to the same criteria they are, which is the honest target. IB Gram does not guarantee grades, and any tutor who does should be questioned closely.

  • Diagnose first: content, assessment literacy and command terms, in that order
  • Backfill in dependency order, not in the order the syllabus prints topics
  • Keep one session at class pace so the gap stops widening weekly
  • Mark real homework against real criteria instead of teaching criteria abstractly
  • Review in writing at week four: what closed, what did not

What should progress look like at four weeks, one term and one exam cycle?

At four weeks you should see changes in process, not changes in grades. The student starts homework without a twenty-minute stall, can say which topic a question belongs to, and brings specific questions to the session instead of handing over a blank page. The written gap list from the diagnostic should have items crossed off it. If none of that has happened inside four weeks, either the match is wrong or the diagnosis was wrong. Both are fixable, but only if somebody says so out loud instead of waiting politely for the next report.

At one term, the measure is a piece of real work: an IA draft submitted on time and marked usefully by the teacher, a mock paper the student finished rather than ran out of time on, a command-term error rate that has visibly dropped. At one examination cycle, you are looking at predicted grades and at whether the student's own estimate of their work has become accurate, which is a better long-term signal than any single result. Grades are not guaranteed by anyone in this business, and a tutor who offers a specific number at the outset should be treated with caution.

When a tutor is not working out, say it in week two rather than week eight. The usual failures are easy to name: the tutor is teaching rather than diagnosing, the student is polite but silent, or the personality fit is wrong in a way no amount of subject expertise repairs. Tell IB Gram what is happening and a replacement is proposed with the handover written down, including the original gap list and what was genuinely covered, so the next person does not start from zero. Changing tutors once is normal, particularly after a relocation. Changing three times in a term usually means the brief itself needs rewriting.

  • Four weeks: fewer stalls, sharper questions, items crossed off the gap list
  • One term: an IA draft submitted on time and marked usefully
  • One exam cycle: accurate self-estimates matter more than a single result
  • Say it in week two, not week eight, when the fit is wrong
  • A replacement arrives with a written handover and the original gap list

Starting IB and IGCSE home tuition in Mumbai: what to have ready

Four things make a first home tuition session useful. The subject list with levels, Higher or Standard, written out properly. The last report or progress sheet from the previous school, plus anything the current school has issued since. The class timetable, so the tutor knows when each subject is actually taught and can place the session where it helps. And any IA task sheet or assignment brief the student has already been given, because that single document tells a tutor more than an hour of conversation about the course ever will.

The first session is a diagnostic and should be booked as one. Expect the tutor to ask the student to attempt work rather than to sit and listen, to interrupt and ask how they got there, and to leave notes a parent can read afterwards. Expect them to ask in detail what the student did at the previous school, because that is where the transferable strength is hiding and nobody has asked about it since the move. A good diagnostic ends with three things: what to fix first, what can safely wait, and what the student should do before the next session.

IB and IGCSE tuition fees in Mumbai depend on the board and level, how scarce the subject is, how far the tutor travels, how long each session runs and how many run per week. Higher Level sciences and Mathematics sit above Standard Level humanities because fewer people teach them to that depth. A tutor crossing from the Western Suburbs into BKC in evening traffic prices that hour in, which is one more reason to match inside your own corridor. Transition work is front-loaded, so expect a heavier first term, and state your budget at the start so the shortlist matches it rather than disappointing you later.

  • Bring the subject list with Higher and Standard Levels marked clearly
  • Bring the timetable, the last report and any IA task sheet
  • Book the first session as a diagnostic, not as a lesson
  • State your budget at the start so the shortlist actually fits it
  • Expect the first term to be heavier than the terms after it
FAQs

Mumbai tutoring — questions parents ask

Is IB Gram connected to the American School of Bombay in any way?+

No. IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform with no affiliation, endorsement or connection to the American School of Bombay or to any other school named on this page. Tutors are placed for families whose children attend the school, which is a relationship with you and not with it. There is no access here to school staff, internal materials, mark schemes or assessment calendars, and none would be used if offered. Everything described here about the school is public: it sits in Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai and offers the IB Diploma Programme.

My child joins the first Diploma year in November. Is it too late to catch up?+

No, but the first move is a diagnostic rather than extra lessons. A November arrival is usually a few units behind in each science and somewhere in the middle of a Mathematics sequence, and because the gap is uneven across subjects, teaching everything at once wastes the hours you have. Families looking for an IB and IGCSE tutor for American School of Bombay students in Mumbai at this point in the year should ask for an audit first, then a backfill ordered by dependency alongside one session at class pace. Most students write to the same criteria as their classmates within a term, though no honest tutor will promise a particular result.

Can a home tutor come to our apartment in BKC or Bandra East on a weekday evening?+

Yes, and weekday evening slots in BKC and Bandra East are the most commonly booked ones here. The practical limits are the building's visitor policy and the hour. Most towers prefer a standing entry approval to a fresh gate pass every week, so arrange that in the first few days. A 6.30pm or 7.30pm start works comfortably for tutors based in Bandra, Khar, Santacruz East or near a Metro Line 3 station. A tutor travelling from Thane or Navi Mumbai for a weekday evening will miss it eventually, so those families are matched to a weekend slot instead.

How much does travel time across Mumbai affect our evening slot?+

A great deal, and it is worth designing around rather than hoping about. The Western Express Highway and the Bandra Worli Sea Link both back up from around six in the evening, so a tutor crossing from Andheri or Worli into BKC at that hour arrives late or arrives tired. Metro Line 3 has changed this considerably for the island city and the northern suburbs, and tutors who use it keep their slots. Inside the ring of BKC, Bandra East, Bandra West and Santacruz East, travel is a non-issue off-peak. The rule is simple: match within the corridor, keep cross-city matches for weekends.

What do IB and IGCSE tuition fees in Mumbai depend on?+

Five things: the board and level, the scarcity of the subject, the travel distance, the length of each session and how many run per week. Higher Level Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics Analysis and Approaches command more than Standard Level humanities, simply because fewer tutors teach them to that depth. Home tuition prices the travel in, so a tutor crossing the city costs more than one in your own corridor. Transition support is front-loaded, which means a heavier first term and a lighter one after. No figure is quoted on a web page here, because an honest number depends on all five.

We may be posted to another country next year. Does the tutoring have to stop?+

No, provided you set it up for that possibility from the beginning. Ask for a tutor who already teaches online comfortably, run at least one session a month on a shared whiteboard while you are still here, and a move becomes a change of format rather than a change of person. Continuity matters most in the second Diploma year, when internal assessments and the Extended Essay are under supervision and a new tutor would need weeks just to understand the drafts. Time zones are the only real constraint, and a Mumbai tutor can usually hold an early morning or late evening slot.

Does online tutoring really work for Diploma subjects?+

For most of them, yes, with clear exceptions. Economics, Business Management, History, English and the written side of Mathematics work well online, because the material is text, diagrams and worked solutions that a tablet and a shared screen handle properly. Scientific investigation planning, Visual Arts and any situation where a student needs watching while they work are weaker. The hardest case is Higher Level Mathematics with a struggling student, where the tutor needs to see the page as the error appears. Hybrid is usually the honest answer: one home session each week and one online.

What happens if the tutor is not working out?+

Tell us in week two rather than week eight, and a replacement is proposed. The usual causes are identifiable: the tutor started teaching before diagnosing, the student is too polite to admit being lost, or the personalities simply do not fit. A replacement comes with a written handover, the original gap list and a record of what was actually covered, so the new tutor does not spend two sessions rediscovering it. One change in a term is normal, particularly after a relocation. Three changes usually means the brief we were given needs rewriting, and we will say so plainly.

There has been no visible progress after a month. What should we do?+

Go back to the written gap list from the diagnostic and check it item by item, because progress at four weeks shows up there well before it shows up in grades. If nothing on that list has closed, the problem is one of three: the diagnosis missed the real gap, the session is being spent on homework rather than teaching, or nothing is happening between sessions. Each has a different fix and none of them is simply more hours. Ask the tutor for a written answer to what changed this month, and judge the quality of that answer.

Who should be at home during a session, and where in the flat should it happen?+

An adult or trusted house staff should be at home, and the session should happen in a shared space, a dining table or a study with the door open, rather than a bedroom. For the first few sessions a parent within earshot is sensible, not because anything is expected to go wrong but because you learn a great deal about the teaching from twenty minutes of overhearing. Keep the space clear of a television and a younger sibling. A teenager who has just changed countries concentrates less than you would expect, and the room matters more than usual during that first term.

How do I judge the best IB and IGCSE tutor in Mumbai when every profile reads the same?+

Ignore the profile and run a fifteen-minute conversation with three questions. Ask which syllabus version they last taught and in which year. Ask them to mark one paragraph of your child's real work against the published criterion and explain the mark out loud. Ask what they would do in the first four weeks, and listen for whether you are hearing a diagnostic plan or a rehearsed script. Profiles are written to look alike on every platform; those three answers never do. Credentials matter, but the ability to explain a mark to a parent predicts a useful term better.

Can one tutor cover a younger sibling doing IGCSE as well?+

Often yes, and it is worth asking, because one tutor travelling to your building for two consecutive sessions is easier to schedule and cheaper per hour than two separate visits. The practical limit is subject range: one person can usually handle IGCSE Mathematics and Diploma Mathematics, or IGCSE and Diploma sciences in the same discipline, but not Higher Level Chemistry and IGCSE English. Mention both children at the start rather than adding the second later, because it changes the shortlist entirely. Two sessions back to back on one evening is the arrangement most families settle into.

Find your Mumbai tutor

Send the subject list, the year group and the week your child joined, and say which parts of Mumbai you can host a tutor in. We come back with a shortlist of IB and IGCSE tutors for American School of Bombay students in Mumbai, usually within a day or two, and you meet one before anything is booked. The first session is a diagnostic and ends with a written gap list. If the fit is wrong, say so and we replace the tutor with a written handover.
