Arranging IB and IGCSE home tuition in Malabar Hill for one household

A single-child request is easy to match. A household with a Year 10 on a Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel entry and a Diploma Programme student upstairs is a scheduling problem first and a teaching problem second. The useful first question is therefore not which subjects, but whether you want one tutor across both children or two. Our answer is usually one tutor for two children in the same broad subject area and two tutors when the subjects diverge, because a single visit covering two consecutive hours costs one journey up the hill and one society entry instead of two of each.

What that requires is a tutor genuinely checked on both boards, and we treat those as separate checks rather than one. Teaching Mathematics (0580) to a Year 10 and teaching a Diploma Programme mathematics course to a DP1 student are different jobs with different assessed components, and plenty of competent people do one well and the other adequately. We ask for evidence of recent teaching on each, and we tell you when a candidate is strong on one board and merely serviceable on the other, so the decision stays yours.

Then the practical layer, which on the Malabar Hill ridge is not an afterthought. Two consecutive hours on a fixed evening is a far easier thing for a tutor in Mumbai to protect than two separate visits, because the climb up from Kemps Corner is paid once. We confirm the day, the start time, the building and the visitor registration before a name is introduced, and we write it down. An IB and IGCSE home tutor in Malabar Hill covering two children in one sitting is the most stable arrangement available here, and stability is what makes a two-year engagement work.

The first meeting is diagnostic for both children separately, even when one tutor is doing it. Each gets their recent marked work read, each gets asked to attempt something aloud, and each gets a written note. Two notes, not one. We review at four weeks, we do not guarantee grades, and IB Gram is an independent platform, not affiliated with any school named on this page.

  • 1. Tell us both children's year groups and which board each sits
  • 2. Say whether you want one tutor across both or two specialists
  • 3. We verify each board claim separately before sending a name
  • 4. One evening, two consecutive hours, one journey, one gate entry
  • 5. A separate written diagnostic note for each child at four weeks

Which board is which, and where do they meet?

The International General Certificate of Secondary Education is a two-year pre-sixteen qualification offered by Cambridge International Education and Pearson Edexcel, assessed mostly by written papers at the end with some practical, oral or coursework components along the way. The International Baccalaureate (IB) runs three programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the Diploma Programme (DP), the last of which is a two-year post-sixteen course. They meet at exactly one point, and it is the point families on this ridge care about: Year 11 IGCSE results feed directly into Diploma Programme subject and level choices.

In practice a Malabar Hill household can hold both at once in several ways. One child sits IGCSE while an older sibling is in DP2. One child moves from IGCSE straight into the Diploma Programme at the same school. Or a child does the MYP rather than IGCSE and joins the Diploma Programme from there, which is a different transition with a different shape. A tutor should be able to tell you which of these you are in without you explaining it twice. Most requests for IB and IGCSE home tuition in Malabar Hill come from one of those three households.

The structural differences matter when you hire. IGCSE is subject-by-subject: a weak subject can be worked on in isolation without disturbing anything else. The Diploma Programme is a package, with six subjects, three usually at Higher Level (HL) and three at Standard Level (SL), plus the Extended Essay (EE), Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and an Internal Assessment (IA) in nearly every subject. Fixing one DP subject in isolation is harder, because the student's problem is often total load rather than that subject.

We will not reproduce paper structures, component weightings or assessment patterns for either board here. Cambridge, Pearson Edexcel and the IB all revise specifications and subject guides on their own cycles, and a figure that was accurate when a sibling sat the course may be wrong for the session your younger child sits. Ask the school for the current specification or subject guide per subject, in writing. A good IB and IGCSE tutor Mumbai families keep for years will ask you for the same documents before planning a term.

  • IGCSE: Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel, two years, mostly terminal papers
  • IB: PYP, MYP and the two-year Diploma Programme
  • They meet where Year 11 results feed DP subject and level choices
  • IGCSE can be fixed subject by subject; the DP is a package
  • Get the current specification or subject guide from the school

The IGCSE to Diploma Programme jump, subject by subject

The jump is not uniform, and treating it as one general step is why DP1 goes badly for students who sailed through Year 11. In mathematics it is the sharpest: the pace assumes fluency with algebraic manipulation that IGCSE rewarded but did not require at speed, and a student who relied on a calculator through Year 11 feels it within a month. In the sciences the content step is moderate and the assessment step is large, because the Diploma Programme asks for a self-designed investigation rather than a prescribed practical. In the humanities the step is almost entirely about writing: longer, more structured, more explicitly argued.

Languages behave differently again. A student who scored well in a second language at IGCSE may find the Diploma Programme version asks for sustained oral performance and interpretation rather than accuracy on set tasks. This is where families most often discover that the tier or level they were comfortable at does not translate, and it is worth a conversation in Year 11 rather than November of DP1.

The practical consequence for hiring is that the useful tutoring window opens in Year 11 and not in DP1. A tutor working with a Year 11 student in the final months before their written series can, in the same sessions, start building the algebraic fluency or the essay structure the Diploma Programme will demand. That costs nothing extra and removes most of the DP1 shock. All IB and IGCSE subjects a tutor in Malabar Hill covers can be approached this way, and almost nobody asks for it, because the transition is invisible until it has already happened.

The level decision is the other place where the two boards touch. A strong IGCSE result in a subject is evidence for Higher Level and not proof of fitness for it, because what Higher Level adds is sustained independent work rather than more content. The question to ask is not whether your child can manage Higher Level in one subject but what the three Higher Level subjects together demand in the same fortnight, and whether that fortnight collides with the Extended Essay deadline. Load, not difficulty, is what breaks DP students on this ridge as everywhere else in Mumbai.

  • Mathematics: the pace assumes algebraic fluency at speed
  • Sciences: moderate content step, large assessment step
  • Humanities: longer, more structured, more explicitly argued writing
  • Languages: sustained oral performance rather than accuracy on set tasks
  • Begin transition work in Year 11, not in November of DP1

One tutor, two children, one climb up the Malabar Hill ridge

Walkeshwar sits directly below the ridge and shares the same schools, which is why most of our matching on this hill starts there. Napean Sea Road runs off the far slope, and Kemps Corner anchors the foot of the climb, where anyone arriving from elsewhere in Mumbai begins the last stretch. Charni Road and Grant Road are the nearest stations on the Western Line, and a tutor off either train still has the ascent in front of them. For a two-child household, that ascent is the whole economic argument for consecutive hours: the journey is the cost, and splitting it across two children halves it.

The wider island is short in distance and slow in practice. A tutor crossing from Worli to Colaba covers roughly eight kilometres and can still lose a large part of an hour to the Peddar Road and Haji Ali signals in the evening peak, which is why tutors in Mumbai, Maharashtra are matched within the island here rather than brought down from the suburbs. The Coastal Road has helped some north-south runs and Metro Line 3 on the Aqua corridor from Cuffe Parade towards the Bandra Kurla Complex has helped tutors who live further out. Neither has changed the final climb, and a tutor arriving from the Western Suburbs for a two-hour double session will still find July harder than September.

The two-hour double has one real risk, and it is worth naming. The second child gets the tired tutor. Some tutors are honest about this and will not teach two consecutive hours of demanding Higher Level work; others handle it comfortably when the second hour is lighter in kind, such as IGCSE consolidation after Diploma Programme teaching. Ask directly which order they prefer and why, and alternate which child goes first across the term if both hours are heavy.

In towers such as Il Palazzo and Vijay Apartments the entry arrangement is the same whether one child or two is being taught: register the tutor once with the society office as a recurring visitor, with a name, a photograph identity and the fixed day and time. Two children do not need two registrations. Lessons go at a dining table or in a study with the door closed, and a double session needs a room that can be held for two hours without the household needing it back, which is a real consideration in a smaller flat.

  • Walkeshwar below the ridge is where most local matching starts
  • Napean Sea Road and Kemps Corner complete the practical radius
  • Charni Road and Grant Road are the nearest Western Line stations
  • Consecutive hours split one journey across two children
  • Ask which child the tutor prefers to teach first, and why

Malabar Hill schools that run both boards under one roof

Malabar Hill and Walkeshwar share the Gopi Birla Memorial School and Bombay International School catchment, and for a dual-board household this matters in a specific way: Bombay International School at Babulnath runs both an IGCSE pathway and the IB Diploma Programme, so a family can have two children on two boards in one school, with one set of term dates and two entirely different assessment calendars. Cathedral and John Connon School in Fort takes a further share of these families and runs a comparable dual pathway. A tutor who already works inside one of these schools' cohorts knows how the two calendars interact, which is information no directory listing can advertise.

The practical effect is that pressure arrives twice rather than once. The IGCSE internal examination window and the Diploma Programme internal assessment deadlines do not line up, so a household with children on both boards gets two separate crunch periods in a year rather than one shared one. That is mostly good news, because a tutor's evening is only contested in one of them, but it means the four-week review for one child may land in the other child's worst fortnight. We schedule around that deliberately rather than discovering it.

The academic year has a shape worth planning from. June opens under heavy monsoon, which tests whether a tutor's travel promise is real and is when a local match proves its value. The weeks around Diwali break momentum for both boards and make a natural review point. The turn of the calendar year brings Year 11 mocks and DP2 internal assessment deadlines into roughly the same weeks, and a household with one child in each will feel that month properly. By the final term before the written series, useful new intervention has largely closed for both and the work is technique.

Those school names are local context and nothing more. IB Gram is an independent platform, not affiliated with Gopi Birla Memorial School, Bombay International School, Cathedral and John Connon School or any other institution mentioned here, and no tutor on the platform speaks for a school or has standing with its examinations office. A tutor may know how a school marks internal work from having taught its students, and should describe it to you in exactly those terms.

  • Bombay International School at Babulnath runs IGCSE and the IB Diploma Programme
  • Gopi Birla Memorial School anchors the Walkeshwar end of the catchment
  • Cathedral and John Connon School adds a dual pathway in Fort
  • Two boards in one household means two separate crunch periods
  • Schedule each child's review outside the other child's worst fortnight

Home tuition for two children in Mumbai: how the hour splits

IB and IGCSE home tuition in Malabar Hill is the format that makes a dual-board household workable, because a tutor in the flat can teach two children in sequence and see both sets of written work on the same table. That is not a convenience; it is how a tutor notices that the younger child has the same method problem the older one had two years ago. The cost is rigidity. A travelling tutor serves a limited number of families in an evening, so a two-hour double is a substantial block of their week and a late cancellation is a large loss rather than a small one. Agree the cancellation terms at the start.

An IB and IGCSE online tutor in Malabar Hill makes sense in narrower circumstances than parents expect. It is right when one child's subject has few local specialists, which happens more often on the Diploma Programme side than the IGCSE side. It is right for short pre-deadline sessions, where travel would exceed teaching. It is right through the worst monsoon weeks. What it cannot do is supervise fresh handwritten working, and a document camera aimed at the page closes most of that gap cheaply.

The combination most dual-board households settle into is one in-person double session a week plus separate short online contacts for whichever child is in a deadline month. That keeps the journey count at one, keeps the tutor, and gives each child a second point of contact in the week when they need it rather than permanently. Through the January crunch, that second contact for the DP2 child is often what keeps an internal assessment draft on the school's own deadline.

One warning specific to the double session. Do not let the younger child's hour become the overflow for the older child's crisis. It happens quietly: a DP2 deadline runs long, the Year 10 hour shrinks to forty minutes, and by the third month the younger child has lost a third of their teaching without anyone deciding it. Fix the two start times, not just the arrival time, and say out loud that both hours are protected.

  • A double session lets one tutor see both children's written work
  • Agree cancellation terms early: a two-hour block is a big loss
  • Online: scarce DP subjects, pre-deadline sessions, monsoon weeks
  • A document camera makes online work on handwritten pages viable
  • Fix both start times so the younger hour cannot be absorbed

Can one tutor really be checked for both boards in Mumbai?

Yes, but only as two separate checks, and a parent should insist on seeing them that way. We verify identity once, then evidence of recent teaching for each board and level claimed, then references we telephone ourselves rather than read. A tutor who has prepared Year 11 students for a Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel entry and has separately taught a Diploma Programme course in the same subject is a genuine dual-board tutor. One who has taught the subject in general and is confident about both is not, whatever their qualifications say.

The question that exposes it quickly is about the assessed components. Ask what they would do with a Diploma Programme internal assessment draft, and separately what they would do with an IGCSE practical or coursework component. A real dual-board tutor gives two different answers, because the criteria and the boundaries differ. A generalist gives one answer with the nouns swapped. This takes two minutes and is the single most useful filter available to a parent in Mumbai hiring across boards.

Then ask what they will refuse. On a Diploma Programme internal assessment and on any IGCSE coursework, a tutor helps a student choose an answerable question, teaches the structure the criteria reward, and reads drafts against those criteria. They do not write sections, dictate sentences, supply analysis or source data. That boundary protects your child's academic honesty declaration, which is a far worse thing to lose than a few marks. An answer that sounds like a boundary is the right answer; a vague one is a real risk.

Finally, test for candour. Be wary of a tutor who offers a guaranteed grade, quotes a success rate, or treats a predicted grade as something that can be managed. Parents typing best IB and IGCSE tutor in Malabar Hill into a search box are usually after exactly that honesty, and an IB and IGCSE private tutor Malabar Hill neighbours already use should still be put through the same two-board test. A recommendation tells you they are reliable and reach the building. It does not tell you they are strong on both boards.

  • Identity once; teaching evidence separately for each board claimed
  • Ask about a DP internal assessment and an IGCSE component separately
  • Two different answers means a real dual-board tutor
  • Ask what they will refuse to do on either board's coursework
  • Be wary of a tutor who offers a guaranteed grade

What changes between Year 11 and Diploma Programme year one?

The workload stops being a list and becomes a system. In Year 11 a student can be behind in one subject and fine in the rest, and the fix is local. In Diploma Programme year one, six subjects, the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and an internal assessment in nearly every subject all draw on the same evenings, so being behind in one subject means being behind everywhere within a month. Students who managed IGCSE by working hard the week before a test discover that the method has no DP equivalent, and that discovery usually arrives in the second term.

The second change is that nobody tells you the real deadlines. Schools set internal deadlines for drafts and submissions that sit well ahead of any external date, and those internal dates are the ones that govern a student's life. A family that knows them in September plans a year. A family that hears about them in January manages a crisis. Ask the coordinator for the internal deadline calendar in writing and put it on a wall. It is the single most useful document in a DP household.

The third change is the nature of help. In Year 11, a tutor can teach content and the marks follow. In the Diploma Programme, a tutor's most valuable work is often structural: helping a student sequence three internal assessments and an Extended Essay across a term so that none of them is written in the last fortnight. That is not subject teaching and many excellent subject tutors do not offer it. If your child's problem is load rather than understanding, say so when you enquire, because it changes who we look for.

IB and IGCSE tuition fees in Malabar Hill depend on the usual short list: board and level, how scarce the specialist is, session length, how many sessions a week, and the journey your chosen hour requires. A double session for two children on one visit is the most efficient configuration there is on this hill, because one journey is paid once. An isolated weekend hour for a single child is the least, so families comparing quotes for IB and IGCSE home classes in Malabar Hill should compare configurations rather than hourly figures. No honest platform publishes one number across all that, and anybody who does is quoting an average that fits nobody.

  • In the DP, being behind in one subject means being behind everywhere
  • School internal deadlines, not external dates, govern a DP student's year
  • Ask the coordinator for the internal deadline calendar in writing
  • A DP student's problem is often load rather than understanding
  • A two-child double session is the most efficient hour on this ridge

What does progress look like when two children share a tutor?

It looks like two separate conversations, and if you are only getting one, something is being neglected. At four weeks each child should have a named diagnosis in concrete terms, each should be able to say what they are working on without prompting, and the two start times should not have drifted. Ask for the tutor's read on each child separately, in writing if that is easier. A tutor who talks about the household rather than the children is managing a slot rather than teaching two students.

At one term the signals differ by board, which is useful. The IGCSE child should be losing fewer avoidable marks on past papers: units carried through, working shown, the right command word answered. The Diploma Programme child should be producing drafts that come back with structural comments rather than content corrections, and should be sequencing work across weeks rather than nights. Those are different kinds of improvement and they arrive on different timescales, which is why one review date for both children is usually a mistake.

Across a full examination cycle the honest range is wide for both boards. Technique problems respond quickly. Conceptual gaps respond slowly and durably. Load problems in the Diploma Programme respond to structure rather than to teaching, and sometimes not at all if the subject combination was wrong from the start. We do not guarantee grades for either child, we publish no success rate, and anyone in this market quoting one has invented it. What we commit to is verified tutors, a protected slot for each child, and an honest review. That is the deal on every IB and IGCSE home tutor in Malabar Hill we place, and on every home tuition arrangement we set up elsewhere in Mumbai.

If the match works for one child and not the other, say so and do not compromise. The common and wrong response is to keep a tutor who is excellent with the Diploma Programme student and merely adequate with the Year 10, because changing feels disruptive. Splitting into two tutors costs a second journey and a second gate entry and is frequently the right call. We re-shortlist for one child while leaving the other arrangement untouched, using the existing diagnostic note so the replacement starts informed.

  • Two children means two diagnoses and ideally two review dates
  • IGCSE progress shows as fewer avoidable losses on past papers
  • DP progress shows as structural feedback and better sequencing
  • Load problems respond to structure, not to more teaching
  • Replace a tutor for one child without disturbing the other

Starting IB and IGCSE home classes in Malabar Hill

Send both children's year groups and boards, the subjects you are worried about for each, the two evenings that work for the household rather than for one child, and your building on the ridge. Say whether you would prefer one tutor across both or two specialists; if you are unsure, we will tell you which the subject combination supports. All IB and IGCSE subjects home classes Malabar Hill families book start from those four inputs, and the building determines how quickly a first session can happen.

Put both children's paperwork out before the tutor arrives, separately rather than in one pile. The last two report cards each, including the teacher comments you would rather not show anyone, any marked script, and for the Diploma Programme child the school's internal deadline calendar if you have it. That calendar is the document that most changes what a tutor plans, and almost no family produces it at a first meeting.

Expect session one to be two diagnostic halves rather than two lessons. Each child gets their recent work read, each gets asked to work a problem aloud, and each ends with a short written note. Read both notes. Ask one question about each. If the two notes read identically, that is information: a tutor who has genuinely diagnosed two children will not produce the same paragraph twice.

Then fix both start times, the day, and the society entry registration in writing, and diarise a review for each child four weeks out. A home tutor for all IB and IGCSE subjects Mumbai parents imagine hiring is rarely one person, and the written notes are how you find out whether you have one who really covers both or two who should.

  • Send both year groups, both boards, and the household's two evenings
  • Say whether you want one tutor across both children or two
  • Bring both children's report cards and any marked scripts separately
  • For the DP child, bring the school's internal deadline calendar
  • Fix both start times in writing and review each child separately
FAQs

Malabar Hill tutoring — questions parents ask

Can one tutor travel here once a week and teach two children on two boards?+

Often yes, and it is usually the best arrangement on this ridge. Two consecutive hours on a fixed evening means one journey up from Kemps Corner and one society entry rather than two of each, which makes the slot cheaper to hold and far more likely to survive the monsoon. It works best when the two hours differ in kind, such as Diploma Programme teaching followed by IGCSE consolidation. Ask the tutor which child they would rather teach first, and alternate across the term if both hours are demanding.

Do we need two society gate registrations for a double session?+

No, one registration covers the tutor regardless of how many children they teach in the visit. In towers like Il Palazzo and Vijay Apartments the flat owner records the tutor once with the society office as a recurring visitor: name, photograph identity, fixed day and time. What a double session does need is a room that can be held for two hours without the household needing it back, which in a smaller flat is a real constraint worth thinking about before you commit to consecutive hours.

When should we start preparing for the Diploma Programme jump?+

In Year 11, well before the written series, and almost nobody does. A tutor working with a Year 11 student can build the algebraic fluency, the longer essay structure or the independent investigation habits the Diploma Programme will demand inside the sessions already happening, at no extra cost. Starting in DP1 means doing that remedial work while six new subjects, the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge are all arriving at once. The transition is invisible until it has already gone wrong, which is why it is worth raising early.

My child did well at IGCSE. Does that mean Higher Level is safe?+

It is evidence, not proof. A strong IGCSE result shows the subject is within reach; what Higher Level adds is sustained independent work rather than extra content, and that is a different capacity. The better question is what your child's three Higher Level subjects together demand in the same fortnight, and whether that fortnight collides with the Extended Essay deadline. Load breaks more Diploma Programme students than difficulty does, and the combination is decided in a couple of weeks that deserve more thought than they usually get.

Is it cheaper to hire one tutor for both children than two specialists?+

Usually yes, because the journey is paid once, but it is only worth it if the tutor is genuinely strong on both boards. Ask them separately what they would do with a Diploma Programme internal assessment draft and with an IGCSE practical or coursework component. Two different answers means a real dual-board tutor. One answer with the nouns swapped means you are buying a saving at the cost of one child's teaching, which almost always turns out to be the more expensive option by the end of the year.

How do two different assessment calendars work in one household?+

They mostly do not overlap, which is the good news, and they create two separate crunch periods instead of one. The IGCSE internal examination window and the Diploma Programme internal assessment deadlines fall at different points, so the tutor's evening is contested in one of them at a time. The planning problem is that one child's four-week review can land in the other child's worst fortnight. Set the two review dates independently rather than together, and ask each school for its internal deadline calendar in writing.

Can a tutor from Worli or Fort keep a two-hour evening slot here?+

A two-hour block is actually easier to protect from a distance than a single hour, because the journey is amortised across more teaching. Even so, a tutor crossing from Worli to Colaba covers about eight kilometres and can still lose much of an hour to the Peddar Road and Haji Ali signals at peak, with the climb from Kemps Corner on top. It holds when the evening never moves. We match within the island by default and tell you when we have gone outside that rule.

Does online tutoring work for a dual-board household?+

As a supplement it works well, as the main format less so. The sensible pattern is one in-person double session a week plus separate short online contacts for whichever child is in a deadline month. Online is genuinely strong for a scarce Diploma Programme subject where the island has no specialist, and for a quick review of a marked paper. It is weak at supervising fresh handwritten working, which a document camera largely fixes. Keeping at least one in-person session preserves the thing a double visit is actually for.

The tutor is excellent with my DP child and adequate with my Year 10. What should we do?+

Split into two tutors and accept the second journey. This is the most common compromise families make and the one they regret, because keeping a convenient arrangement that serves one child well quietly costs the other child a year. Tell us and we re-shortlist for the Year 10 alone, leaving the Diploma Programme arrangement untouched and carrying over the existing diagnostic note. The extra journey and the second gate registration cost less than a wasted IGCSE year does.

There has been no progress for one child after a month. What happens?+

Raise it at that child's four-week review and expect a replacement rather than a defence. At four weeks we are looking for a specific named diagnosis, a child who can say what they are working on, and start times that have not drifted. If those are missing for one child, the match is wrong for that child regardless of how the other is doing. We re-shortlist using the first tutor's written note, and you are not asked to justify the request or raise it with the tutor yourself.

Who sets the internal deadlines, and why do they matter more than exam dates?+

The school sets them, and they matter because they are the dates a student actually lives by. Internal deadlines for drafts and submissions sit well ahead of any external date, and in the Diploma Programme they are what determine whether a term is calm or chaotic. A family holding that calendar in September can plan a year; a family hearing about it in January is managing a crisis. Ask the coordinator for it in writing and put it somewhere visible, because a tutor can only plan backwards from dates they know.

Is IB Gram affiliated with Bombay International School or Gopi Birla Memorial School?+

No. IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with Bombay International School, Gopi Birla Memorial School, Cathedral and John Connon School or any other institution named on this page. They appear here because they define the catchment Malabar Hill and Walkeshwar families live inside and because several of them run both an IGCSE pathway and the IB Diploma Programme under one roof. A tutor may know how a school marks internal work from having taught its students, but nobody here speaks for a school.
