How IB Gram builds a shortlist for an IB home tutor in Khar West

A request for an IB home tutor in Khar West arrives carrying two or three stated facts and about ten unstated ones. The stated facts are usually the year group, the subject and the rough location. The unstated ones decide whether the arrangement survives past week three: whether the child sits in the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP) or the Diploma Programme (DP), whether the real problem is missing content or assessment technique, whether an adult is in the flat at 7pm, and how long a tutor will sit on the Western Express Highway before the whole thing quietly lapses. We ask for the unstated ones before we send a single profile, because a shortlist built without them is just a list of names with subjects attached.

The sequence is deliberately short. 1. You send a brief: year, programme, subject, the two or three things going wrong, and the evenings that are genuinely free rather than theoretically free. 2. We read that against the roster and pull two or three profiles whose subject-and-level match is exact rather than approximate, which matters more in the International Baccalaureate (IB) than in almost any other system. 3. You take a free discovery call with whichever profile you prefer, and that call is a conversation with the tutor, not a pitch from a coordinator. 4. Lessons start only once you say yes, and the first one is a diagnostic rather than a lecture. 5. We review at two to four weeks and either continue, change the plan or change the tutor.

What we will not do is forward nine profiles and leave you to sort it out. Choosing between nine strangers is work you cannot do well, because the thing that separates them is not visible on a profile: it is whether this person can explain a Mathematics concept to a child who has already decided they are bad at it. Scarcity is also real and we say so. A DP Higher Level (HL) Physics specialist free at 6pm on a Tuesday is a narrower search than a MYP Mathematics tutor free on Saturday morning, and if the subject is unusual we will tell you the shortlist is one profile rather than pad it.

IB Gram is an independent platform. We are not affiliated with Jamnabai Narsee International School, Billabong High International School, Ecole Mondiale World School or any other school named anywhere on this page; we name them because they are where the children of Khar West actually go. We are a matching service, which means our job ends when a good tutor is in the right room with the right child, and we do not guarantee grades.

  • Brief, shortlist of two or three, discovery call, then lessons
  • Subject and level matched exactly, not by board name alone
  • First session is a diagnostic, not a syllabus walkthrough
  • Review at two to four weeks with no lock-in period
  • We say when a subject is scarce rather than padding the list

PYP, MYP or DP: where in the IB does your child actually sit?

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is a continuum, not a single course, and the single most common mismatch we see in the Western Suburbs is a DP-trained tutor placed in front of an MYP child. The Primary Years Programme (PYP) runs through the early years and is built on inquiry units rather than chapters, so a tutor who arrives with a worksheet pack has already misread the brief. The Middle Years Programme (MYP) spans five years across eight subject groups and marks against published criteria rather than a percentage. The Diploma Programme (DP) is the final two years, with six subjects split between Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL), plus the Extended Essay (EE), Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and Creativity, Activity, Service.

Those three stages reward completely different tutoring. A PYP child needs someone who can sit inside a unit of inquiry and strengthen the number sense or the reading stamina underneath it without turning the evening into drill. An MYP child needs someone who understands that a strong answer and a high criterion score are not the same thing, and who can read a task sheet backwards from the criterion strands to the work. A DP student needs someone fluent in the specific demands of their subjects at their level, because HL and SL are not the same course with more homework.

This is why we ask for the programme before the subject. A parent in Khar West who writes "my son is in Grade 9 and struggling with Maths" has told us almost nothing until we know whether that is MYP Year 4 criteria-based work or an IGCSE cohort, and those two children need different people. Our roster is built to span all IB and IGCSE subjects IB and IGCSE, Years 1-12 tutor Mumbai parents can filter by programme, but the filtering is the valuable part, not the breadth.

If your child is mid-transition, say so. The move from MYP Year 5 into DP1 is the hardest handover in the programme, and the move from PYP into MYP Year 1 is the one parents underestimate. A tutor who has taken students through either handover is worth more to you than one who has only ever taught the destination. An IB home tutor in Khar West who has done both can tell you in session one whether the gap is skill or confidence.

  • PYP: inquiry units, number sense and reading stamina underneath
  • MYP: eight subject groups, criteria A to D, task sheets read backwards
  • DP: six subjects, HL and SL, plus EE, TOK and CAS
  • HL is not SL with extra homework; match the level exactly
  • MYP Year 5 into DP1 is the handover that catches families out

Subject choice, HL and SL, and the internal assessment behind each one

Subject choice is where IB families in Mumbai make the decisions they later pay for. In the Diploma Programme (DP) the six-subject structure forces real trade-offs: one Higher Level (HL) science and one HL Mathematics is a workload a strong student can carry, and three HL sciences with a demanding Extended Essay (EE) usually is not. Parents often ask us to fix a subject that was simply the wrong choice, and no amount of home tuition rewrites that. What a tutor can do is make the choice survivable, and tell you honestly in the first fortnight whether it is.

Every IB subject carries internal assessment, and the internal assessment is where the marks quietly leave. A science Internal Assessment (IA) stands or falls on the research question and the handling of uncertainty, not on the length of the write-up. A Mathematics exploration needs a question narrow enough to be answered properly and personal enough to justify the exploration label. A Language A written task needs textual evidence rather than plot summary. These are craft skills, and craft skills are exactly what a good tutor transfers and a group class cannot.

We do not publish component weightings, paper durations or mark totals here, and you should be suspicious of any tutor who quotes them to you with confidence. The IB revises subject guides on its own cycle, and a figure that was accurate two years ago may be wrong for the session your child sits. Get the structure from the current subject guide and from the Diploma Programme coordinator at your school; use the tutor for the skills.

No one teaches all IB and IGCSE subjects and a tutor in Khar West who says otherwise is overselling. A good Chemistry tutor is usually also a usable Biology tutor and a poor Mathematics tutor. When a family needs three subjects covered we will often propose two tutors rather than one generalist, and we will say which subject to leave alone for now. That is also what IB home tuition in Khar West should feel like: fewer sessions, better aimed. Directory listings advertise all IB and IGCSE subjects home classes Khar West parents can book from one number, and the breadth is exactly the warning sign.

  • Three HL sciences plus a hard EE is rarely a survivable load
  • Science IA marks turn on the research question and uncertainty
  • Maths exploration needs a narrow question, not a long one
  • Language A work needs textual evidence, not plot retelling
  • Two specialists usually beat one generalist across three subjects

How far can an IB tutor from Khar Road reach by 5pm?

In practice, about four kilometres north or south along the line, and almost nothing across it. Khar Road station sits between Bandra and Santacruz on the Western Line, which makes Khar West unusually well served for home tuition: a tutor can step off at Khar Road and be in a flat on the Khar West–Linking Road stretch in under ten minutes on foot or in an auto. The same tutor trying to reach Powai or Chembur for the same slot is looking at an hour each way, which is why we almost never propose it.

That geometry is the reason our coverage from Khar West reads the way it does. We routinely match the same tutors across Bandra West, Santacruz West and Juhu, because all four are a short hop on the line or on Link Road. Bandra West and Khar West are effectively one tutoring market with two station names. Santacruz West is the easy northward step. Juhu takes a road leg rather than a train leg, so a Juhu-to-Khar-West move works well off-peak and badly at 6pm, and tutors who hold families in both usually put Juhu first in the evening and Khar West second.

The Western Suburbs run north to south along the Western Express Highway and the Western Line, and that single fact explains most scheduling failures here. A tutor travelling Bandra to Andheri is quick off-peak and painful at 6pm. Matching along the line, Khar to Santacruz or Malad to Kandivali, holds for a full term; matching across it does not. When a parent asks for an IB home tutor in Khar West who lives in Thane because the profile looked good, we say no, and explain why rather than take the booking.

Metro Line 1 and Metro Lines 2A and 7 have changed this a little at the margins, mostly for tutors coming down from Andheri and Dahisar for a weekend block rather than a weekday evening. For a standing 6.30pm Tuesday slot, the honest answer in Mumbai is still that proximity beats credentials. A very good tutor forty minutes away cancels; a good tutor twelve minutes away turns up for eleven months. Parents who type IB tutors near me Khar West into Google are really asking a travel-time question, and the answer is the line.

  • Khar Road station puts Bandra West and Santacruz West minutes away
  • Bandra West and Khar West behave as one tutoring market
  • Juhu is a road leg: better off-peak, difficult at 6pm
  • Matching along the Western Line holds; matching across it fails
  • Metro 2A and 7 mostly help weekend blocks, not weekday evenings

The Mumbai IB school calendar that decides when you should start

Children in Khar West are spread across a handful of IB and Cambridge schools within a short drive, and their calendars are what actually set your timing. Ecole Mondiale World School in Juhu runs the full continuum from PYP through MYP to DP, so a Khar West family can have one child on inquiry units and another on an Extended Essay draft in the same house. Jamnabai Narsee International School, also in Juhu, pulls a large share of the children from this stretch. Billabong High International School takes others from Santacruz and Juhu. We name these as local context only; IB Gram has no relationship with any of them.

The pressure points repeat every year and they are predictable enough to plan around. The weeks after the mid-term reports in the second half of the year are when most enquiries arrive, which is also when the good tutors on this corridor have already filled their 6pm to 8pm slots. Internal assessment drafts cluster, so a DP1 student will often have a science IA plan, a Mathematics exploration proposal and a TOK exhibition commentary all live within the same fortnight. MYP families hit it differently: the personal project in Year 5 lands on top of ordinary unit assessment.

The practical consequence is simple. Start before the pressure point, not during it. A family who begins IB home tuition in Khar West six weeks before the draft deadline gets a tutor who can teach; a family who begins four days before it gets a tutor who can only triage. Mumbai school calendars also carry a monsoon factor, because July and August evenings lose time to flooded roads around the Western Express Highway, and a tutor who lives nearby is the difference between a lesson and a cancellation.

If your child's school runs a different reporting rhythm, send us the dates. We would rather build a schedule around your school's actual calendar than around a generic Mumbai one, and tutors on this corridor who already hold families at the same school tend to know the rhythm without being told.

  • Ecole Mondiale World School runs PYP, MYP and DP in Juhu
  • Jamnabai Narsee International School draws heavily from this stretch
  • Billabong High International School takes families from Santacruz and Juhu
  • Evening slots fill right after mid-term reports; book earlier
  • Monsoon evenings cost lessons unless the tutor lives close

Should IB home tuition in Khar West be in person or online?

Start in person if you can, and the younger the child the less that is negotiable. An IB home tutor in Khar West who sits at your dining table can see the exercise book, the handwriting, the margin where the student gave up, and the phone face-down two feet away. For a PYP or early MYP child that observation is most of the value, because the problem is rarely the concept and usually the working habit. Home classes also remove the travel burden from a twelve-year-old who has already done a school day and a bus ride.

Online earns its place in three specific cases. The first is scarcity: a DP HL subject with a thin local pool is better taught well from Pune or Bengaluru than taught poorly from two streets away. The second is exam season, when a student wants three short sessions a week instead of two long ones and nobody can travel that often. The third is the monsoon and the 6pm Western Express Highway, where an IB online tutor in Khar West is simply the version of the lesson that actually happens. The honest trade-off is attention: a sixteen-year-old holds a screen session, a nine-year-old mostly does not.

Hybrid is what most families here settle into after a month or two, and it is usually the right answer rather than a compromise. One in-person session a week anchors the relationship and lets the tutor check the physical work; one online session handles a specific question or a draft review without anyone crossing Mumbai in traffic. Families with a Juhu-based tutor use this most, because the road leg is the part that breaks.

We will tell you which mode we think fits before you book, and we will say when an IB private tutor Khar West parents want in the room is not available at the hour they want. Changing the mode mid-term is normal and costs nothing with us. What does not work is pretending a screen session with a distracted eleven-year-old is equivalent to a tutor at the table. It is not, and no amount of software fixes it.

  • In person first for PYP and early MYP: the exercise book matters
  • Online wins on scarce HL subjects and on short exam-season sessions
  • Hybrid: one session at the table, one on screen for drafts
  • A nine-year-old rarely holds a full online session; a sixteen-year-old does
  • Switching mode mid-term is normal and costs nothing

What does IB Gram check before a tutor rings your bell in Mumbai?

Identity, qualification, board-specific experience and a teaching sample, in that order, plus references where a tutor has taught in Mumbai schools. Identity means government photo identification matched to the name on the profile. Qualification means the actual degree in the subject, not a general education certificate with the subject added. Board experience is the one that matters most and the one directories skip: having taught the Diploma Programme is not the same as having taught HL in that subject, and we record the level, not just the programme.

The teaching sample is a short live session on a topic the tutor does not get to choose. We are watching for one thing: whether they ask the student a question in the first three minutes or talk for ten. The tutors who talk for ten are often knowledgeable and almost always poor matches for a child who is already behind. We also check whether they can explain the same idea a second way when the first way fails, which is the whole job.

There are things you should check yourself, and we would rather you did. Ask the tutor directly how many years they have taught your child's exact subject at your child's exact level. Ask what they would look at first in your child's last report. Ask what they will send you after four weeks. Be wary of a tutor who offers a guaranteed grade, because no one can honestly offer one, and we do not guarantee grades either. A tutor who promises a specific score has told you something useful about their judgement.

A search for the best IB tutor in Khar West is really a search for the tutor who fits this particular child, and verification is only the part of that we can do for you. Verification is a floor, not a prediction. It tells you this person is who they say they are and can teach the thing they say they teach. It cannot tell you whether your daughter will like them, which is why the discovery call exists and why the first four weeks of any IB home tutor in Khar West arrangement are a trial in substance even though we do not call it one.

  • Photo identification matched to the name on the profile
  • Subject degree checked, not a general teaching certificate
  • Level recorded: HL in that subject, not just DP experience
  • Live teaching sample on a topic the tutor did not pick
  • Ask any tutor how many years at your child's exact level

Why your place in a tutor's evening chain changes which slot to book

Here is the thing that is true in Khar West and almost nowhere else in Mumbai. Because Khar West sits between Bandra and Santacruz on the Western Line, a tutor working this corridor commonly holds three families in one evening between Bandra and Juhu, stepping between them on the line rather than driving across the city. That is why the local pool is deeper here than the population alone would suggest. It also means that when you book a slot, you are buying a position in somebody's chain, and the positions are not equal.

First slot, roughly 4.30pm to 5.30pm, is the one almost nobody takes and the one that behaves best. The tutor is fresh, has travelled before the peak, and is not watching the clock for the next flat. It suits a PYP or MYP child who is better in daylight anyway. Middle slot, around 6pm to 7.15pm, is the most requested and the most fragile: the tutor arrives from the previous family through peak traffic on Link Road, and a fifteen-minute overrun upstream becomes your fifteen-minute shortfall. Last slot, after 8pm, is reliable on time because there is nothing after it, but you are getting the end of a long day.

The practical move is to pick by child rather than by convenience. A DP2 student revising Mathematics at 8.15pm is fine, often better, because they are nocturnal by then and nothing follows the session. A Year 3 child at 8.15pm is a waste of your money. If you need the middle slot, ask for it as the tutor's first stop of the evening rather than the second, and accept a slightly earlier start in exchange for reliability. Families who do this stop having the "the tutor is late again" conversation entirely.

This is also why we match an IB home tutor in Khar West from inside the Bandra-to-Juhu band rather than importing one. A tutor already holding two families on this stretch has an incentive to protect the chain, and a route they drive twice a week in any weather. A tutor coming down from Borivali for a single family has neither, and that arrangement is the one that dissolves in September.

  • A Khar West tutor often holds three families from Bandra to Juhu
  • 4.30pm slot is underbooked and the most reliable of the three
  • 6pm slot is the most requested and the first to run late
  • After 8pm suits DP revision and suits primary children badly
  • Ask to be the tutor's first stop, not their second

Honest limits: what an IB home tutor in Mumbai cannot fix

At four weeks you should see three things and none of them is a grade. You should see that your child can say what they are working on without checking their phone. You should see homework starting without a negotiation. You should see one specific skill visibly better, named by the tutor in advance, something like "she can now set up an uncertainty table without being prompted". If none of those three has moved in four weeks of weekly home tuition, something is wrong with the match and we would rather hear from you than have you wait politely until the term ends.

At one term, expect movement in internal assessment work and in class participation before you expect movement in test scores. Marks in the IB are slow because the assessment is slow: a criterion score reflects a body of work, not a single good night. At one full exam cycle, expect the thing that actually changes outcomes, which is a student who knows how to prepare without being supervised. Families who get that outcome usually stop tutoring voluntarily, and that is the result we are aiming at.

What a tutor cannot fix: a subject choice that was wrong from the start, a school attendance problem, a sleep pattern, an undiagnosed learning difference, or a student who has decided they are not interested and has not been asked why. Two tutors in a row failing on the same child is almost never two bad tutors. We will say so, and sometimes the right recommendation is an educational psychologist rather than more sessions, which costs us a booking and is still the right call.

We publish no success rates, no student counts and no percentage improvements, because any number we published would be unverifiable and you would be right not to believe it. We do not guarantee grades. What we will give you is a specific, named skill target at four weeks and an honest conversation if it is missed. That is the only promise about outcomes that an honest platform can make.

  • Four weeks: one named skill visibly better, not a better mark
  • One term: IA work and participation move before test scores
  • One exam cycle: a student who prepares without supervision
  • Two failed tutors on one child is usually not about tutors
  • No success rates, no student counts, no guaranteed outcomes

Starting IB home classes in Khar West, Mumbai

Send four things and we can usually come back the same day. The last report card or progress sheet, including the comments rather than only the grades. A photograph of a recent piece of marked work, which tells a tutor more than the report does. The programme and year, written plainly. And the two or three evening windows that are genuinely free, after school transport, after any sport, after dinner if that is how your household runs. Parents who send the marked work get a better shortlist, every time.

Session one is a diagnostic and you should expect it to look slightly unproductive. A good tutor spends it finding the floor: which earlier topic the current confusion is standing on, how the student reads a question, whether they can start a problem without being told how. By the end of it you should get a short verbal summary and one named target for the month. If instead you get a sales conversation about a package of twenty sessions, tell us.

Practical preparation is small but it matters. A table with a chair, not a bed. A charged device if the subject needs one, and the school portal login findable rather than theoretical. An adult in the flat for the first two sessions with a younger child. The building gate informed that a tutor is expected weekly, because the first lesson lost to a visitor-pass argument at the gate is a lesson nobody gets back. If parking is tight on your lane, say so, and we will match someone arriving by train from Khar Road.

Fees are not published here because a real number depends on the board, the level, how scarce the subject is, how far the tutor travels and how long the session runs. A DP HL Physics specialist in Mumbai costs more than a MYP generalist, and both cost more at your table than on a screen. We will give you a clear figure from the tutor before the first lesson, with no platform fee hidden inside it, and nothing is payable until after the discovery call.

  • Send the report comments, not only the grades
  • Send a photo of recent marked work; it beats the report
  • Tell the gate a tutor is expected weekly, before session one
  • Session one ends with one named target for the month
  • A clear fee from the tutor before any lesson is booked
FAQs

Khar West tutoring — questions parents ask

What exactly does an IB home tutor in Khar West do in the first session?+

They diagnose rather than teach. A good first session is spent finding out which earlier topic the current confusion rests on, watching how your child reads a question, and checking whether they can begin a problem unaided. The tutor will usually work through two or three pieces of recent marked work rather than opening the textbook at the current chapter. You should finish the hour with a short spoken summary and one named target for the coming month. If the first session is a lecture on the syllabus, the diagnosis never happened and the plan that follows will be generic.

Can a tutor travel to Khar West for a 7pm evening slot on a weekday?+

Yes, if they already work this corridor, and that is the condition we match on. A tutor based between Bandra West and Juhu reaches Khar West on the Western Line or by a short road leg and holds a 7pm slot through the year. A tutor coming from Thane, Chembur or Navi Mumbai for the same slot will manage it for a few weeks and then start rescheduling. Link Road and the Western Express Highway at 6pm are the reason. We would rather give you a nearby tutor who turns up than a distant one with a longer profile.

How does a tutor get past our building gate in Khar West each week?+

Tell the gate once, in advance, and the problem disappears. Most buildings on the Khar West–Linking Road stretch will register a weekly visitor against a flat number for a standing slot, which turns a ten-minute argument into a signature. Give the security desk the tutor's name and the day and time before the first lesson, and give the tutor your flat number and a phone number that someone actually answers. The commonest avoidable loss in the first month is a lesson spent at the gate. Where a building insists on a fresh pass each visit, ask the tutor to arrive five minutes early.

What do IB tuition fees in Khar West depend on?+

Five things: the board, the level, how scarce the subject is, how far the tutor travels, and how long each session runs. A Diploma Programme Higher Level science or Mathematics specialist sits at the top of the range because there are fewer of them. A MYP generalist sits lower. In-person home tuition costs more than the same tutor online because travel time is real time. We do not publish a price list, because any figure here would be wrong for somebody. The tutor quotes you directly before the first lesson, and there is no platform margin hidden inside that number.

My child is in MYP, not DP. Does that change who you send?+

Completely. MYP work is marked against published criteria rather than a percentage, so a tutor who only knows the Diploma Programme will coach good answers that score poorly. The skill you need is someone who can read a task sheet backwards from the criterion strands and show your child where the marks live. MYP also runs across eight subject groups with the personal project arriving in Year 5, which is a project-management problem as much as a subject one. When you enquire, say the MYP year, not just the grade, and we will filter on it.

Is an IB online tutor in Khar West as good as someone in the room?+

For a DP student, often yes. For a PYP child, usually not. Older students manage a screen, share a document and work through a draft without losing the thread, and online opens up specialists who do not live in the Western Suburbs at all. Younger children lose attention and the tutor loses sight of the exercise book, the handwriting and the abandoned margin. Most families here end up hybrid: one session at the table each week, one online for a draft review or a quick question. Online is also what keeps lessons running through a monsoon week.

What happens if the tutor is not working out after three weeks?+

You tell us and we change them, with no argument and no notice period. Say what is not working rather than only that it is not working, because "he is good but she stops listening after twenty minutes" points at a different replacement than "he is not familiar enough with HL". We go back to the shortlist, and the second match is usually faster because we now know something real about the child. You pay for lessons taken and nothing else. There is no lock-in and no minimum number of sessions with us.

There has been no progress after a month. What should I do?+

Ask for the four-week target to be shown to you, in writing, with the evidence. At the start the tutor should have named one specific skill, and after four weeks they should be able to point at work that shows it moving. If they cannot, the match is wrong or the diagnosis was. Sometimes the honest answer is that the problem is not academic at all: sleep, attendance, an undiagnosed learning difference, or a subject choice that should be reviewed with the school. Two tutors failing on the same child in a row is a signal to look past tutoring.

Do you cover Bandra West, Santacruz West and Juhu as well?+

Yes, and we treat them as one pool with Khar West because the Western Line makes them one. Bandra West and Khar West behave as a single tutoring market with two station names. Santacruz West is the short step north from Khar Road. Juhu takes a road leg instead of a train leg, so it works well off-peak and badly in the evening peak, and tutors holding families in both usually take Juhu first. If you live on the boundary, give us the nearest landmark rather than the postcode and we will match on travel time.

Do I need to be at home during the lesson?+

For the first two sessions with a younger child, yes. Not to supervise the teaching, but so the tutor can tell you what they found and so your child understands this is sanctioned rather than imposed. After that, an adult or trusted help in the flat is enough for primary and early middle years. Older students are generally better without a parent in earshot, and DP students are often considerably better. What matters more than your presence is that the study space stays the same each week: same table, same chair, phone in another room.

Can you help with the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge?+

Yes, and they are among the most common requests we get from DP families in Mumbai. The Extended Essay (EE) usually fails on scope rather than effort: a question too broad to answer in the word count, chosen because it sounded impressive. Theory of Knowledge (TOK) work fails on examples, which tend to be abstract when they should be specific. A tutor here works on the question, the structure and the evidence while your child's school supervisor keeps ownership of the process. We do not write any part of it, and no credible tutor will.

What will you not promise me?+

A grade. We do not guarantee grades, we publish no success rates and no student counts, and we will not tell you a number of sessions that produces a seven. Be wary of any tutor who offers a guaranteed grade, because nobody can honestly offer one and the offer tells you what their judgement is like. What we will commit to is a verified tutor whose subject and level match your child's exactly, a named skill target at four weeks, a review at two to four weeks, and a replacement without friction if the match is wrong.
