How a request for an IB home tutor in Grant Road becomes a shortlist

Start with what you send us. A parent in Grant Road usually writes two lines: the child's year, the subject that is slipping, and the evenings that are free. That is enough to work with. From there the first filter we apply is geography rather than qualification, because a superb teacher who cannot reliably reach Tardeo by seven in the evening is not a superb teacher for your household. South Mumbai punishes optimistic scheduling more than any other part of the city.

The sequence runs like this. 1. We read your enquiry against the live Grant Road list: tutors already teaching somewhere on the island who can reach your address on the evenings you named. 2. We check programme fit, so a Diploma Programme (DP) Chemistry request does not land with someone whose entire classroom history is state board. 3. We send you two or three profiles carrying board history and the subjects each person teaches at Higher Level (HL) rather than a generic list. 4. You choose, we fix a first session, and you decide after that session whether it continues.

What that process deliberately leaves out is a sales call. Nobody rings you to ask about your budget before you have seen a profile. The reason is practical: until you know which tutor is coming, a conversation about money is guesswork, and until a tutor has sat with your child for an hour, nobody honestly knows how many weeks of work the gap represents. We would rather you pay for one session and form your own view.

The one local fact that shapes this list more than anything else is the station. Grant Road station is the common interchange for South Mumbai tutoring: a tutor who lives in the Western Suburbs rides the Western Line down, gets off here, and walks or takes a short rickshaw to Tardeo, Kemps Corner or Babulnath. That single habit means a Grant Road address is often the easiest address in the island city to staff, and it is why we will usually have someone for a Tuesday and Thursday slot here when we are struggling to fill the same slot in Colaba.

  • Enquiry to first profile usually inside two working days
  • Profiles name boards taught, not years of unverified experience
  • Evening availability confirmed with the tutor before you see the profile
  • No introduction fee and no deposit before the first session
  • You can ask for a different shortlist without explaining why

PYP, MYP and DP in Mumbai: what actually changes at each stage

Three programmes sit under the IB label and parents in Mumbai routinely hire for the wrong one. The Primary Years Programme (PYP) runs through the junior school and is organised around units of inquiry rather than subjects, so a PYP request is almost never about content. It is about a child who cannot yet structure a piece of writing, or who has decoupled from number sense, and the tutoring that helps is patient and conversational rather than worksheet-driven.

The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is where the character of the work changes. Subjects become distinct, assessment moves onto published criteria, and the report your child brings home stops giving a percentage and starts giving criterion letters. A parent reading that report for the first time in Year 7 has no intuitive sense of whether a 4 is a problem. It usually is not, by itself; a 4 that has not moved in three reporting cycles is.

The Diploma Programme (DP) is the two-year stretch most families search for, and it is a different animal again. Six subjects, three at Higher Level (HL) and three at Standard Level (SL), plus Theory of Knowledge (TOK), the Extended Essay (EE) and Creativity, Activity, Service. Internal Assessment (IA) work in each subject runs alongside teaching, which is why DP1 students in Grant Road can look fine in October and be underwater by February. Do not take component structures from an old blog post or from this page; the IB revises subject guides on its own cycle, so check the current guide or your child's coordinator.

An IB home tutor in Grant Road is therefore matched to a stage, not to a label. The person who is excellent with a Year 4 PYP reader is frequently the wrong person for an MYP Year 5 personal project, and neither is who you want for an HL Physics IA. When you write to us, naming the year group matters more than naming the programme, because the year tells us what is due next term.

  • PYP: inquiry units, no subject marks, focus on habits and language
  • MYP: criteria A to D, eight subject groups, Year 5 personal project
  • DP: three HL, three SL, plus TOK, EE and internal assessments
  • MYP to DP is the transition parents underestimate most often
  • Year group tells us the deadlines; programme name alone does not

Which IB subjects do Grant Road students most often need help with?

Maths and the sciences, in that order, and almost always because of the internal assessment rather than the taught content. A DP student who can follow a Chemistry lesson perfectly well still has to design an investigation, justify a method, handle uncertainty properly and write it up against criteria she has never been taught to read. That is a separate skill, and it is the single most common reason a Grant Road family goes looking for help in the second half of DP1.

Subject choice is the other recurring request, and it arrives earlier. Parents ask whether one person can be an all IB and IGCSE subjects tutor in Grant Road, and the honest answer is no. Nobody is a home tutor for all IB and IGCSE subjects Mumbai could realistically field, and a tutor who claims every subject at Higher Level is telling you something about their marketing rather than their teaching. What one tutor can genuinely do is sit with a Year 10 or Year 11 student and work through the HL and SL combination against what the child is actually good at, which university pathways need which subject, and how much writing the child can sustain.

Languages are underserved in South Mumbai and worth planning ahead for. A Language B request in French or Spanish at Higher Level, or a Language A other than English, is a scarce match anywhere in Mumbai, and the tutors who can do it are usually booked by August. If your child is heading into DP with a language subject you expect to need support in, ask in the summer rather than in November. The same applies to Economics and Business Management at HL, where the extension papers and the written assignment separate confident students from struggling ones.

For the structural detail of any of this, use the current IB subject guide your school works from. This page will not reproduce weightings, paper durations or mark totals, because those are revised and a figure that was right two years ago may be wrong for the session your child sits. What we will tell you is which components students lose marks on, and the answer is consistently the ones that are written at home under no supervision.

  • HL Maths: proof, calculus technique and the exploration write-up
  • Sciences: investigation design, uncertainty handling, criteria-aligned reporting
  • English A: unseen commentary timing and the comparative essay
  • Economics and Business HL: extension content plus written assignments
  • Language B: scarce tutors, so ask a term before you need one

From Grant Road station outwards: Tardeo, Kemps Corner and Girgaon

Parents type IB tutors near me Grant Road into Google and expect the result to be a radius. A tutor working this part of Mumbai does not cover a radius, they cover a walk. From the station, Tardeo is a short rickshaw ride inland, Kemps Corner is up the slope towards Peddar Road, and Girgaon is south along the old chawl and wadi streets towards Charni Road. All three are routinely served by the same person on different evenings of the week, which is why IB home tuition in Grant Road is easier to arrange than the map suggests.

Tardeo households are mostly in mid-rise towers with a single controlled entrance and a visitor register, so the practical issue there is the gate rather than the distance. Kemps Corner adds a traffic problem instead: anything arriving from Worli or Haji Ali after six in the evening is at the mercy of the Peddar Road signals, and a tutor who promises you 6:30pm on a Monday without having driven it is being careless. Girgaon is the opposite case, with narrow lanes, older buildings and lifts that queue, so the tutor walks in from Girgaon Chowpatty side and the ten minutes you lose are inside the building.

South Mumbai is dense and short-distance but slow. A tutor crossing from Worli to Colaba covers eight kilometres and can still lose forty minutes to the Peddar Road and Haji Ali signals in the evening peak. We therefore match within the island rather than bringing someone down from the suburbs for a weekday session, and when a suburban specialist is genuinely the right subject fit we will say so and suggest a weekend slot or a hybrid arrangement instead of pretending the commute will hold.

The transport picture matters when you are choosing a slot. The Western Line brings tutors down to Grant Road and Mumbai Central, the Harbour Line serves the eastern edge of the island, Metro Line 3 has changed how quickly someone can come across from the Bandra Kurla Complex side, and the Coastal Road has made the western seafront route viable at times it never used to be. Tell us which evenings you want and we will tell you which of those routes a tutor would be using.

  • Tardeo: tower blocks, visitor register, short ride from the station
  • Kemps Corner: Peddar Road signals make early-evening slots unreliable
  • Girgaon: older buildings, lift queues, tutor usually arrives on foot
  • Babulnath and Nana Chowk sit inside the same tutor's weekly loop
  • Weekday matches stay on the island; suburban specialists get weekend slots

Which Mumbai schools shape the IB calendar for Grant Road families?

Children from these streets are spread across a handful of schools within a few kilometres, and their calendars are what set your tutoring year. Bombay International School at Babulnath is walking distance for many Grant Road families and runs both an IGCSE pathway and the IB Diploma Programme. Activity High School on Peddar Road sits just up the hill. Aditya Birla World Academy in Tardeo draws heavily from this corridor, and a number of families send children further down the island to Cathedral and John Connon School in Fort or to B.D. Somani International School at Cuffe Parade.

Naming them is local context and nothing more. IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with Bombay International School, Activity High School or any other school on that list, and no tutor on our platform should ever suggest otherwise. If someone implies they have an arrangement with your child's school, that is a reason to end the conversation.

What the calendar does to you is predictable. The academic year opens in June, and the first useful report lands around the end of the first term, which is when most enquiries from this corridor arrive. January and February are the hard months for DP2: internal assessment deadlines, mock examinations and the Extended Essay all compress into the same weeks, and a tutor hired in January is firefighting rather than teaching. March onwards belongs to the May examination session and almost nothing new can be learned in it.

The sensible pattern, which experienced parents in Tardeo and Kemps Corner already follow, is to hire after the first report and before the December break. That gives a tutor a full term of ordinary teaching time, and it means the January crunch is a matter of consolidation rather than rescue. If you are reading this in January anyway, say so in your enquiry; the shortlist we build for a triage case looks different from the one we build for a full term.

  • Academic year opens in June; first real report around late first term
  • October and November are when most Grant Road enquiries arrive
  • January and February compress IA deadlines, mocks and the Extended Essay
  • May session work is consolidation, not new content
  • IB Gram has no tie-up with any school named on this page

Should IB home tuition in Grant Road ever move online?

Home tuition is the default here and it should be, for one reason that has nothing to do with teaching quality: a tutor in your living room sees the whole situation. She sees the folder that has never been opened, the phone face-down on the table, the younger sibling's television through the doorway, and the fact that your child does her Maths standing at the kitchen counter. None of that reaches a video call. For MYP students in particular, where the problem is usually organisation rather than content, that visibility is most of the value.

Online has two situations where it genuinely wins. The first is scarcity: if your DP2 child needs HL Spanish B or Higher Level Computer Science, the right person may be in Pune or Bengaluru and an online session with the right specialist beats an in-person session with an approximate one. The second is the examination run-in, when a forty-minute question-doubt call at 9pm is worth more than a ninety-minute visit nobody has the energy for. An IB online tutor in Grant Road arrangement works best as a deliberate choice for those cases, not as a fallback.

Hybrid is what most families here end up with by February without having planned it. One home visit a week for the taught work and one short online call for doubts is a realistic pattern that survives examination season, monsoon train delays and the Peddar Road evening. We will set it up that way from the start if you ask, and it usually costs less in travel loading than two in-person sessions.

The honest trade-offs are these. An IB home tutor in Grant Road costs more per hour than an equivalent online tutor, because travel time is real time. Online sessions need a parent to enforce the first ten minutes, because a child alone with a laptop and a chat window is not in a lesson. And a hybrid arrangement only works if both parties treat the online half as a real session with a real agenda rather than an optional extra that quietly lapses in week five.

  • Home visit: full visibility of study space, folders and distractions
  • Online: the answer when the subject specialist is genuinely scarce
  • Hybrid: one visit plus one doubt call survives examination season
  • Travel time is priced in, so home rates sit above online rates
  • Online needs a parent present for the first ten minutes, honestly

What IB Gram verifies, and what you should check yourself in Mumbai

Before a profile reaches you we confirm identity against government photo identification, confirm the degree claimed, and confirm the board experience claimed by asking for specifics a person who has not taught the programme cannot produce. A tutor who says she has taught DP Biology should be able to describe how she coaches an investigation from research question to evaluation. One who says she has taught MYP should be able to explain what criterion C asks of a student. We also confirm the areas and evenings each tutor will actually travel to, which is how the Grant Road, Tardeo and Kemps Corner lists stay accurate rather than aspirational.

What we cannot verify is fit, and fit is most of the outcome. So there is a second layer of checking and it is yours. Use the first session as an interview in both directions. Afterwards, ask your child one question: did she explain it, or did she do it? A tutor who solves the problem on the page while the student watches produces a lesson that feels excellent and changes nothing.

There are four things worth asking an IB home tutor in Grant Road directly before you commit to a term. Which boards have you taught, and for how many cohorts? What will you cover in the first three sessions, specifically? What do you want from us, in terms of space, timing and the parent's involvement? And what will you tell us if my child is not making progress? The fourth answer is the most revealing, because a tutor who has never had to deliver bad news to a parent has not been doing this long.

Be wary of anyone who offers a guaranteed grade. No honest IB tutor Mumbai families hire can promise a specific result, and IB Gram does not guarantee grades either. A tutor who talks in terms of specific outcomes is either inexperienced or is managing your expectations in the wrong direction, and both tend to show up around week six when the work gets hard.

  • Photo identification and degree verified before any profile is shared
  • Board experience probed with programme-specific questions, not a checkbox
  • Travel areas and evening availability confirmed with each tutor
  • Ask what the tutor will do in the first three sessions, specifically
  • Ask how they will tell you if progress stalls

What does Higher Level actually add in DP1 and DP2?

Higher Level adds depth, extra content and a longer written load, and it is chosen two years before anyone can see the consequences. That is the decision most worth getting right, and it is the reason subject-choice conversations are a legitimate use of tutoring hours rather than a waste of them. A student who takes three sciences at HL because an engineering pathway was mentioned once at a school information evening will spend DP2 writing three investigations in the same fortnight, and will do all three badly.

The structural difference between HL and Standard Level is not simply more hours. HL carries additional topics that are examined in their own right, and in several subjects it carries an extra paper or an extended component. More importantly it carries a different expectation of independence: an HL student is assumed to be able to read a subject guide, plan an investigation and manage a draft cycle without being chased. A capable Year 11 student is not automatically that person, and the gap between capability and independence is exactly what the first term of DP1 exposes.

The sequencing problem is the one nobody warns Grant Road parents about. Internal assessments across six subjects are not timetabled against each other, so a DP2 student in Tardeo can have a Physics investigation draft, a Maths exploration and a TOK essay due inside the same two weeks in January, on top of the Extended Essay. The fix is calendar work in September of DP1: list every internal component against the month it falls, and move the ones that can be moved. A tutor who does that with your child in the first month earns their fee before teaching a single topic.

If you are choosing now, two questions cut through most of the noise. Which subjects will your child still be willing to read about in eighteen months, and which written forms can she sustain? A student who writes fluently but hates practical work should not be taking three experimental sciences at HL whatever the university brochure says. Check the current subject guide for what each Higher Level course actually contains, because the content lists do change, and talk to the school's Diploma Programme coordinator before the choices are locked.

  • HL adds examined content, written load and an assumption of independence
  • Three experimental sciences at HL means three investigations in one fortnight
  • Map every internal component onto a calendar in September of DP1
  • Choose for sustained interest and writing stamina, not brochure logic
  • Confirm course content against the current subject guide, not old notes

What should change after four weeks of home tuition in Grant Road?

At four weeks you are not looking for better marks. You are looking for four smaller signals, and if none of them has appeared it is time for a conversation rather than patience. The child should be able to tell you what the tutor is working on, in her own words, without looking it up. The folder or the digital notes should have a shape. Homework should be started earlier in the week than it was in September. And the tutor should have told you something about your child that you did not already know.

One term is where marks become a fair test. By then a tutor has seen a reporting cycle, a set of class assessments and at least one internal assessment draft, and a flat line over a full term is real information. It usually points to one of three things: the diagnosis was wrong and the problem is upstream of the subject, the sessions are being spent on the tutor doing the work, or the child is not doing anything between sessions. All three are fixable and the first step is the same, which is to say it plainly and early.

One examination cycle is the longest honest horizon. A student who was two grade boundaries below where she needed to be in October, who worked steadily, who submitted drafts on time and who sat practice papers under timed conditions, is in a materially different position in May. That is not the same as a promise. IB Gram does not guarantee grades, no tutor on the platform may promise a specific result, and anyone who does is telling you they do not understand how the assessment works.

The limits are worth stating too. Home tuition cannot fix a subject chosen against a child's grain, it cannot create eighteen months of missing foundation in one term, and it cannot replace attendance. If your child has lost a term of school, say so when you enquire; the plan looks different and so does the number of weeks it takes. We would rather set a realistic expectation in the first email than apologise for an unrealistic one in March.

  • Week four: the child can describe what she is working on unprompted
  • Week four: homework starts earlier in the week than it used to
  • One term: class marks are a fair test, a flat line is information
  • One cycle: timed practice and submitted drafts change the position
  • No guarantees from IB Gram or from any tutor on the platform

Your first enquiry from Grant Road: what to have ready before session one

Four things make the shortlist accurate, and all four take you five minutes. The child's year group and programme stage. The subject or subjects, named as the school names them. The two or three evenings that are genuinely free, not the ones that look free on a calendar. And the last report, even if it is a photograph of it on your phone. With those, the profiles we send are the people who can actually do the job rather than the people who are generally available.

Prepare the room before the first visit rather than after it. A table the child can write at, a chair that is not the sofa, a light that works for reading at eight in the evening, and the subject folder and the school's own task list in one place. If the only quiet surface in the flat is the dining table, tell the tutor that in advance so the session is scheduled when the table is free. In Girgaon and parts of Grant Road where flats are compact, this is the single practical change that improves the first month most.

Session one has a job and it is not teaching. The tutor should diagnose: a short piece of written work, a few questions from the current unit, a look at the last assessment and a look at how the child organises notes. By the end of it you should get a plain summary of what the gap is and what the first three sessions will cover. If you do not get that, ask for it before you book a fourth.

Then tell us how it went. A one-line reply is enough. If the fit is wrong we will put another shortlist together without making it awkward, and you lose one session rather than a term. The parents in Tardeo and Kemps Corner who get the most out of this platform are the ones who say early that something is not working, which is also true of the ones whose arrangements end up running for two full years.

  • Have the year group, the programme stage and the last report ready
  • Name the evenings that are genuinely free, not the aspirational ones
  • Set up a writing surface and a light before the tutor arrives
  • Expect a diagnosis and a three-session plan from the first visit
  • Tell us in week one if the fit is wrong, not in week six
FAQs

Grant Road tutoring — questions parents ask

What does an IB home tutor in Grant Road do differently in session one?+

Session one should be a diagnosis, not a lesson. An IB home tutor in Grant Road who knows the programme will ask your child to produce something written, work through a few questions from the unit currently being taught, look at the last assessment and look at how notes are kept. By the end there should be a plain statement of what the gap is and a plan for the next three sessions. A tutor who opens by teaching chapter one has decided what the problem is before meeting the student, and that is the commonest reason a promising arrangement stalls by week five.

Can a tutor reach Tardeo or Kemps Corner from Grant Road station for a 7pm evening slot?+

Yes, and that specific journey is the reason this corridor staffs easily. Grant Road station is the common interchange for South Mumbai tutoring, so a tutor coming down the Western Line steps off here and walks or takes a short rickshaw to Tardeo, Kemps Corner or Babulnath. A 7pm start in Tardeo is realistic. Kemps Corner is the one to watch, because anything approaching from Haji Ali or Worli is held at the Peddar Road signals in the evening peak, so we will usually suggest 7:30pm there or a tutor who is already on this side of the hill.

What do IB tuition fees in Grant Road depend on?+

Five things, and no honest platform can quote you a figure without knowing them. Programme stage, because DP work costs more than PYP work. Level, because Higher Level commands more than Standard Level. Subject scarcity, which is why HL Physics and a Language B other than English sit at the top of the range. Travel, because a tutor coming from across the island is pricing an hour of Mumbai evening traffic into your session. And session length and frequency, where two shorter weekly sessions usually price differently from one long one. Ask for the rate in writing before session two, not after.

Does an IB online tutor in Grant Road work for a DP2 student?+

For a DP2 student, often yes, and better than it would for a Year 6 child. By DP2 the student can run her own session, bring specific questions and share a draft on screen, which is exactly what online handles well. It is also the only realistic way to reach a scarce Higher Level specialist. The weakness is drafting support that needs a tutor to see the whole working, and the examination run-in when stamina matters. Most DP2 families in this part of Mumbai end up with one home visit a week plus a short online doubt call, which is a deliberate arrangement rather than a compromise.

Is there a best IB tutor in Grant Road, and how would we know?+

There is no single best IB tutor in Grant Road, and a platform that names one is selling you something. What exists is a best fit for one child, one subject and one set of evenings, and it changes from family to family. The practical test after three sessions is whether your child can now explain the method without help, whether work is starting earlier in the week, and whether the tutor has told you something you did not know about your own child. A tutor who scores well on those three is the right tutor regardless of whose profile reads more impressively.

How do we handle building access and the lift queue when a tutor arrives?+

Register the tutor once with the watchman as a standing weekly visitor and the problem disappears. In the tower blocks around Tardeo and Nana Chowk the visitor register and an entry call to the flat are standard, and the delay is two minutes if the guard is expecting the name and ten if he is not. In the older Girgaon buildings the lift is the bottleneck rather than the gate, so build five minutes into the slot. Tell the tutor the wing, the floor and the watchman's usual position before the first visit; it sounds trivial and it is the difference between a 7pm session starting at 7pm or at 7:15pm.

Our MYP child's report says criteria C and D are weak. What does that mean?+

It means the marks are coming off the thinking and communicating strands rather than the knowledge strand, which is good news and bad news. Good, because the child does know the content. Bad, because criteria-based weakness is about how work is planned, justified and presented, and that is slower to shift than a content gap. An MYP tutor should work on the structure of responses: what the command term is asking, how an argument is laid out, how evidence is used. Read the criteria descriptors in your school's current MYP documentation rather than relying on a summary, because the wording is what the marking follows.

What if our DP1 child picks the wrong Higher Level combination?+

Raise it immediately, because there is usually a window in the first weeks of DP1 when a change is still administratively possible. After that the realistic options narrow to dropping a Higher Level to Standard Level, which schools handle differently and which your Diploma Programme coordinator has to approve. A tutor's useful role here is diagnostic rather than decisive: two sessions in the suspect subject will tell you whether the issue is the subject itself or the transition from Year 11 teaching to DP independence. Those two causes look identical in October and lead to opposite decisions, so do not guess.

How many sessions before we should see something change?+

Four, if you are watching the right things. Not marks, which lag by a reporting cycle, but the four earlier signals: your child can describe the current focus unprompted, notes have a structure, homework starts earlier in the week, and the tutor has told you something about your child's working habits that you had not noticed. If all four are missing at session four, say so. The usual causes are a wrong diagnosis, a tutor who is doing the work rather than teaching it, or nothing happening between visits, and each one has a different fix.

Can one IB private tutor Grant Road families hire cover both a PYP and a DP child?+

Rarely well, and we will usually advise against it. An IB private tutor Grant Road parents engage for a DP2 Chemistry student is a subject specialist managing internal assessment drafts; a PYP child needs someone building reading, writing and number habits through inquiry. They are different jobs. Where it does work is a single tutor covering two children in adjacent MYP years in the same subject group, back to back on the same evening, which also saves travel loading. Ask for two matches and schedule them on the same evening if you want the convenience without the compromise.

Is IB Gram connected to Bombay International School or Activity High School?+

No. IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform and is not affiliated with Bombay International School, Activity High School, Aditya Birla World Academy or any other school mentioned anywhere on this site. We name them because their calendars and board pathways are the context a Grant Road parent is working inside, and because a tutor who has taught students from a particular school knows what its assessment rhythm feels like. If a tutor ever suggests an official arrangement with a school, or hints at access to school materials, tell us and we will remove them.

What happens if a tutor misses a session during the monsoon?+

It gets rescheduled, and in July and August you should expect that to happen at least once. Western Line delays and waterlogging around Nana Chowk and Girgaon are a fact of a Mumbai monsoon, and a tutor who sets out anyway and arrives at 8:15pm for a 7pm session is not helping anybody. The workable arrangement is an agreement up front: a missed visit converts to an online session that week if both sides can manage it, or moves to a fixed weekend slot. Agree which one before the rains, not during them.
