IB DP Sports, Exercise and Health Science Home Tuition in Mumbai

IB DP Sports Exercise and Health Science home tuition in Mumbai is usually booked for one reason: the student knows the content and still loses marks in the exam room. This page is about exam technique, paper by paper, and what a home tutor works on with a DP1 or DP2 student in Mumbai who is marked down for how she answers rather than what she knows.

Tutors screened for IB Diploma Programme teaching or examining experience in this subject
Sessions built around marked past-paper scripts, not around re-teaching the textbook
Home slots matched inside your zone so travel does not eat the lesson
IB Gram is independent of every school named here and does not guarantee grades

How does IB Gram match a Sports Exercise and Health Science home tutor in Mumbai?

Subject first, then zone, then timetable. A request for IB DP Sports Exercise and Health Science home tuition in Mumbai is read by a coordinator who wants the last marked script before anybody is proposed, because the fix for a student who cannot read a data table under time pressure is not the fix for a student who writes four lines where the command term wanted eight.

Sports, Exercise and Health Science is a smaller cohort subject in most Mumbai schools than Biology or Chemistry, so the pool of people who have actually taught or marked it is thin, and the matching has to be honest about geography from the first call. A Sports, Exercise and Health Science tutor in Mumbai who lives in Chembur and is asked to teach in Khar West at seven on a Tuesday will start cancelling by November. It is better to hear in week one that your zone has two realistic profiles and that one of them teaches online than to fix a slot that quietly collapses in the second term.

The coordinator call is short and it is mostly questions about the script rather than about the student's personality. Which paper lost the most marks? Were they content marks or technique marks? Did she run out of time, or finish early and lose marks on precision and units? Does the school mark internally against the published descriptors, or against a house style that is tougher than the real scheme? Most parents cannot answer those questions. The marked paper can, which is why we ask for it before we ask for anything else.

What comes back is two or three profiles with a short plan attached to each, not a catalogue of everyone free on Tuesdays. Every profile states where the tutor is based, which evenings are genuinely open for a full term, and what they would do in the first hour. If none of them fits after the trial, say so plainly and the shortlist is rebuilt with what that trial taught us.

  • 1. Send the DP year, the level, the school and the most recent marked script.
  • 2. A coordinator reads the script, then calls you for a short conversation about it.
  • 3. Two or three profiles come back, each with a zone and a first-session plan.
  • 4. You book a trial lesson at home and say plainly whether it worked.
  • 5. The weekly slot is fixed, or the shortlist is rebuilt from what the trial showed.

DP1 and DP2: when exam technique actually has to be built

Technique is built in DP1 and tested in DP2, and the students who leave it to DP2 are the ones who arrive in March with beautiful notes and a mark that will not move. The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) runs across two years, and in Sports, Exercise and Health Science the first year carries most of the content teaching along with the start of the scientific investigation.

A Sports, Exercise and Health Science IB Diploma Programme (DP), Years 1-2 tutor Mumbai families book in DP1 is doing a different job from one booked in February of DP2. In DP1 the work is habit formation: reading a stem properly, learning what each command term is asking for, writing an answer that a marker can award without having to interpret it, and getting comfortable with graphs that were drawn for a research paper rather than for a textbook. None of that feels urgent in DP1, which is exactly why it is cheap to install then and expensive to install later.

In DP2 the calendar takes over. Mocks land, the scientific investigation has to be finished alongside the Extended Essay (EE) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK) deadlines, and the student discovers that knowing the content and scoring the content are separate skills. An IB home tutor in Mumbai working with a DP2 student spends most of the hour on scripts: what was written, what the scheme wanted, and the exact gap between the two. Re-teaching a topic in DP2 is usually a sign that the diagnosis was wrong.

Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL) students share Papers 1 and 2; Higher Level adds Paper 3 and extra depth across the course. Structures, paper formats and the requirements for the scientific investigation are revised by the IB on its own cycle, so treat your school's current subject guide and your Diploma Programme coordinator as the authority on what your child will actually sit, not an article on the internet.

  • DP1 is for habits: command terms, units, graph reading, answer shape
  • DP2 is for scripts: what was written against what the scheme awards
  • Higher Level adds Paper 3 and extra depth beyond the shared papers
  • The scientific investigation starts earlier than most students expect
  • Confirm current paper structure with your DP coordinator, not with an online summary

Papers 1, 2 and Higher Level (HL) Paper 3, and the scientific investigation

Paper 1 is multiple choice, and it is where strong students quietly donate marks. The cost of rushing is rarely a wild guess; it is a tick placed on an option that is perfectly true but is not the answer to the question asked. Distractors in this subject are written out of common half-understandings, so a student who reads the stem once, recognises a familiar term and selects towards recognition will be wrong often enough to cross a grade boundary. The technique a tutor installs is slow reading of the stem, a pencil mark against the one word that makes the question specific, and then elimination against that word rather than selection towards the comfortable option. Students who finish Paper 1 with time to spare are usually the ones who have lost the most.

The structured questions reward precision of naming. Credit tends to sit with the correct term for a structure, a system or a stage, placed in the right slot of the answer, rather than with a loose description that circles the idea without landing on it. A line that says something helps the body work better has given a marker nothing to award; a line that names the structure and states its role in one clause has. Tutors work on this by taking the student's own answer, underlining every vague noun, and asking for the technical word that replaces it. That exercise is boring and it moves marks faster than anything else in the course.

The data-based questions are drawn from published research, which is why they feel harder than the content standing behind them. The figure in front of the student was drawn for a journal, not for a Diploma candidate in an exam hall: the axes carry units that have to be decoded, there are often two series, and the question wants a comparison rather than a reading. The method is mechanical and it survives panic. Read the title. Read both axes with their units. Say what a single point means before looking at any trend. Only then read the question, because the question almost always names the exact thing it wants compared, and students lose marks by describing an entire figure when one comparison was asked for.

Biomechanics questions are arithmetic with units attached and they are marked like physics. A student who gets the number right and omits the unit has thrown a mark away; a student who copies six figures off a calculator when the data carried two significant figures has thrown away another. Working has to be visible, because method marks survive an arithmetic slip and a bare wrong answer does not. The drill is four lines every time: state the relationship, substitute with units, compute, then round to the significant figures the data allows. Extended responses are a different problem again, because the command term decides the shape of the answer. Outline, describe, explain, discuss and evaluate are not interchangeable, and a discussion written as a description will score as a description however long it is. Writing to the mark allocation is the discipline that goes with it: a question carrying several marks is asking for that many creditable points, not for one point stated at length.

Higher Level students also sit Paper 3, and Higher Level work generally expects more of the same precision rather than a different kind of thinking. The scientific investigation is the internally assessed piece, and it is where a tutor has to stay carefully in their lane. Any practical work, any measurement involving a person, and any testing of any kind belongs in the school laboratory under the supervision of the student's own teacher, who is responsible for ethics clearance and safety. A tutor can help with the logic of the research question, with whether the variables are genuinely controllable, with how raw data becomes processed data, with uncertainty and with the written evaluation. A tutor cannot and should not direct physical activity, prescribe anything, or tell a student to try a procedure at home.

  • Paper 1: eliminate against the stem's key word, never select on recognition
  • Structured answers: name the structure or mechanism, do not describe around it
  • Data questions: title, axes, units, one point, then the question
  • Calculations: show working, keep units, respect significant figures
  • Extended responses: let the command term set the shape of the answer
  • Investigation: all practical work stays in school under the teacher's supervision

Home tuition across Mumbai: six zones and what each one does to a 6pm slot

In South Mumbai the distances are short and the clock is not. A tutor crossing from Worli to Colaba covers a few kilometres and can still lose most of an hour to the Peddar Road and Haji Ali signals in the evening peak, so families in Cuffe Parade, Churchgate, Fort, Babulnath, Walkeshwar, Tardeo and Parel are matched inside the island rather than served from the suburbs. The Western Line into Churchgate, Grant Road and Mumbai Central, the Harbour Line through Dockyard and Sewri, Metro Line 3 from Cuffe Parade to BKC and the Coastal Road all change what is possible, and the Coastal Road in particular has made a Worli tutor reachable in Lower Parel in a way the old map did not allow.

The Western Suburbs run north to south along the Western Express Highway and the Western Line, which means matching along the line works and matching across it does not. Bandra to Khar West to Santacruz West is one corridor; Juhu, Andheri West, Oshiwara and Goregaon East are another; Malad, Kandivali East, Borivali and Dahisar East are a third. Metro Line 1 from Versova through Andheri to Ghatkopar and Metro Lines 2A and 7 from Dahisar down to Gundavali have made some of these hops predictable, and a predictable hop is what keeps a Tuesday evening slot alive in October. In the Central Suburbs the Central Line from Kurla to Mulund and the Eastern Express Highway carry most of the traffic, with Powai and Chandivali hanging off the JVLR in between. Powai is the odd one out because it has no station of its own, so a tutor arrives there by road from Andheri East, Kanjurmarg or Ghatkopar, and the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road is the piece of infrastructure that makes a Chembur to Powai pairing workable at all.

The Eastern Suburbs stretch from Chembur and Govandi up through Vikhroli and Bhandup to Mulund, on the Central and Harbour lines and the Eastern Express Highway, with the Monorail linking Chembur to Wadala and the Eastern Freeway pulling South Mumbai much closer than the map suggests. Navi Mumbai is planned in nodes, so Vashi, Nerul, Seawoods, Belapur, Kharghar and Panvel each sit a short drive from the next along Palm Beach Road and the Sion-Panvel Highway, with the Harbour Line, the Trans-Harbour Line, Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 and now the Atal Setu stitching them together. Node-to-node matching holds for a full term; pulling a tutor across the creek from the island city for a weekday evening lesson rarely does, whatever the Atal Setu has done to the drive time.

Thane spreads west to east from the station across Pokhran Road, Majiwada, Ghodbunder Road and out to Kasarvadavali and Hiranandani Estate, and the Ghodbunder stretch sets the entire schedule: twenty minutes off-peak, close to an hour in the evening. Thane tutors cover Thane, and Mulund tutors sometimes cross over on the Eastern Express Highway. Across all six zones of Mumbai, Maharashtra the rule is the same one, and it is the reason an IB DP Sports Exercise and Health Science home tutor in Mumbai is matched by corridor rather than by distance on a map. A home tutor for Sports, Exercise and Health Science Mumbai families keep for two full years is almost always one who was never asked to make an unreasonable trip.

  • South Mumbai: Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Worli, Tardeo, Walkeshwar, Parel, matched within the island
  • Western Suburbs: Bandra, Khar West, Santacruz West, Juhu, Andheri, Malad, Borivali, Dahisar East
  • Central Suburbs: Powai, Chandivali, Kurla, Ghatkopar, reached by JVLR and the SCLR
  • Eastern Suburbs: Chembur, Govandi, Vikhroli, Bhandup, Mulund, Wadala, served by the Eastern Freeway
  • Navi Mumbai: Vashi, Nerul, Seawoods, Belapur, Kharghar, Panvel, matched node to node
  • Thane: Pokhran Road, Majiwada, Ghodbunder Road, Kasarvadavali, Hiranandani Estate

Which months are the real pressure points in a Mumbai IB school year?

October to November and January to February, in that order. Mumbai IB schools run the Diploma Programme on a June-to-March teaching year, so DP2 mocks land in the window between the October break and the end of January, internal deadlines for the scientific investigation cluster just before or just after them, and the May examination session arrives while the city is already hot and attendance is patchy. Families who book exam-technique support in September are working on scripts by December; families who book in February are triaging.

The schools themselves set the texture of that calendar. Dhirubhai Ambani International School, the American School of Bombay and Ascend International School in BKC, Ecole Mondiale World School, Jamnabai Narsee International School and Utpal Shanghvi Global School in Juhu, Oberoi International School on the JVLR in Goregaon East, Hiranandani Foundation School in Powai, B.D. Somani International School in Cuffe Parade, Cathedral and John Connon School in Fort, Bombay International School at Babulnath, Aditya Birla World Academy in Tardeo, the JBCN International School campuses in Parel, Borivali, Oshiwara and Chembur, NES International School in Mulund West, Thakur International School in Kandivali East, Singapore International School in Dahisar East, Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania School in Thane and D.Y. Patil International School in Nerul all run their own internal deadline rhythms, and two schools a few kilometres apart can have mock weeks a fortnight out of step.

IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with any of those schools, nor with the International Baccalaureate organisation. Naming them here is local context: these are the campuses Mumbai families actually attend, and their calendars are what a weekly home tuition slot has to survive. A tutor who knows that a particular school front-loads its internal assessment deadlines before the Diwali break will plan the autumn differently from one who assumes a standard calendar.

There is a second calendar problem specific to this subject. Students taking Sports, Exercise and Health Science frequently also represent the school in sport, which means inter-school fixtures, trials and tournaments sit on top of the academic calendar and often fall in the same weeks as mocks. The scheduling answer is not to argue with the fixture list; it is to move the weekly slot to a fixed weekend morning for those terms and protect it, so that the session survives the season instead of being cancelled around it.

  • October to November: mocks and internal assessment deadlines converge
  • January to February: final mocks, then the run-in to the May session
  • Diwali and the October break: the only clear block for technique work
  • Mock weeks differ between schools a few kilometres apart
  • Sports fixtures collide with mock weeks; move the slot, do not cancel it

Is home tuition or online better for exam technique in Mumbai?

For exam technique, home tuition wins on scripts and online wins on consistency. IB DP Sports Exercise and Health Science home tutoring in Mumbai puts a tutor at the same table as the paper, and marking a script together is a physical activity: the tutor annotates in one colour, the student rewrites in another, and both of them look at the same sheet. That is awkward on a screen and effortless at a dining table. Home tuition is the lead service on IB Gram for exactly this reason, and it is what most Mumbai parents searching this phrase actually want.

Home classes also carry costs that nobody mentions at the enquiry stage. The tutor's travel is real time that has to be paid for somehow, either in the rate or in the number of slots they can hold in a week, which is why a Bandra tutor crossing to Ghatkopar is both harder to book and more expensive to keep. A cancelled session is harder to reschedule when travel is involved. And the student has to be at home and ready, which in a DP2 term with fixtures and extra school sessions is not always true at 6pm.

An IB online tutor in Mumbai solves the geography problem and nothing else. For this subject the online trade-off is better than it is for many: scripts can be photographed and annotated on a shared screen, past-paper graphs can be marked up live, and a student who is away for a tournament keeps her slot. What online loses is the ambient information a tutor picks up in a room, whether the student is actually writing or only nodding, how long she takes to start an answer, whether her diagrams are drawn or copied. Online also depends on the student having a quiet corner, which in a shared Mumbai flat is a real constraint rather than a technicality.

Hybrid is what most families settle into by the second term, and it is worth planning for rather than drifting into. One home session a week for script work and one shorter online session for drilling command terms and data questions is a common pattern; so is home during school terms and online during the exam run-in, when the student is at home revising and a thirty-minute check-in beats a ninety-minute visit. An IB private tutor Mumbai parents engage on a hybrid pattern should be able to say which mode each piece of work belongs in, and say it without being asked.

  • Home: best for marking scripts side by side and seeing how a student writes
  • Home: travel cost is real, and a cancelled slot is harder to move
  • Online: keeps the slot alive through fixtures, travel and monsoon disruption
  • Online: needs a quiet corner and a working camera pointed at the paper
  • Hybrid: home for script work, online for drills and exam-run-in check-ins

How tutors are checked, and what you should check yourself

Every tutor on IB Gram is checked for identity, for the qualification they claim, and for genuine teaching experience in the board and subject they are listed under. For this subject that last check matters more than usual. Plenty of people can teach general biology competently and have never seen a Sports, Exercise and Health Science mark scheme, and the difference shows up in the first session when the tutor cannot say why a technically correct answer scored two out of four. References are followed up with people who have actually watched the tutor teach, and profiles state what the tutor has taught rather than a list of topics copied from a syllabus.

There is no single best IB tutor in Mumbai for this course. There is a tutor who has marked enough structured answers to recognise your daughter's particular failure mode in twenty minutes, and there is a tutor who has not. The phrase IB tutors near me Mumbai parents type into a search box at eleven at night is really a geography question, and geography is the easy half. The harder half is whether the person has worked with real scripts in this subject recently enough to remember how the credit is actually awarded.

Three things you should check yourself, because no platform can check them for you. Ask the tutor to mark one page of your child's work before you commit, and read the annotations: specific, mark-scheme-shaped comments are the signal, and general encouragement is not. Ask what they would do in the first three sessions and whether they can tell you in order. Be wary of a tutor who offers a guaranteed grade, a predicted score or a fixed number of marks of improvement on a first call, because nobody who has marked Diploma papers talks that way.

IB Gram stays involved after the match rather than disappearing once the first invoice is paid. If the sessions are not working, you tell the coordinator and a replacement is shortlisted; you are not negotiating directly with someone you now have an awkward relationship with. That is a deliberate part of how the platform works, and it is one of the few things a parent can rely on when the subject pool in their zone is small.

  • Identity, qualification and subject-specific teaching experience checked before listing
  • Subject check is strict: general science teaching is not Sports, Exercise and Health Science
  • Ask for one page of your child's work to be marked before you commit
  • Read the annotations: mark-scheme language is the signal, encouragement is not
  • Replacements are handled by the coordinator, not negotiated by you

What changes when a Mumbai student marks her own script against the real scheme?

Almost everything, and faster than any other intervention in this course. A student who has only ever had her work marked by someone else is guessing at what the marker wants. A student who has sat with the published mark scheme, her own answer and a red pen has seen the gap herself, and seeing it once is worth being told about it ten times. This is the core of what IB DP Sports Exercise and Health Science home classes in Mumbai should be spending their hours on from the second term of DP1 onwards.

The exercise has a shape. The student writes an answer under timed conditions, with no notes. The script is then set aside for at least a day, so she returns to it as a reader rather than as the author who still remembers what she meant. She marks it herself against the official scheme, awarding marks line by line and writing the reason beside each one she did not award. Only then does the tutor mark the same script independently, and the two sets of marks are compared. The interesting conversation is never about the total; it is about every place where she awarded herself a mark the scheme would not have given.

The patterns that come out of this are remarkably consistent. Students award themselves marks for meaning rather than for wording, because they know what they intended to say. They award marks for content that appears somewhere on the page rather than in the place the question asked for it. They accept their own vague nouns. They miss that a question carrying several marks needed several distinct creditable points and they wrote one point three ways. And in calculations they forgive themselves a missing unit or an over-precise answer that a real marker would not forgive. Once a student has caught herself doing each of these three or four times, she starts writing differently before the mistake happens, which is the whole point.

There is a second version of the exercise worth running once a term, and it is harder. The student marks a classmate's script, or an anonymised script the tutor supplies, without knowing what the writer intended. Marking a stranger's answer is the closest a seventeen-year-old gets to sitting on the other side of the desk, and it kills the habit of writing answers that only make sense to someone who already knows what the student knows. A tutor who runs this well will also show the student how command terms map onto the scheme's own wording, so that outline, explain and evaluate stop being vocabulary and start being instructions about structure.

  • Write under timed conditions, then leave the script for a day before marking it
  • Mark against the official scheme line by line, writing a reason for every refusal
  • Compare your marks with the tutor's: the disagreements are the lesson
  • Watch for marks awarded for intention rather than for wording
  • Once a term, mark a script written by someone else

What progress looks like at four weeks, one term and one exam cycle

At four weeks you should see changes in the writing, not in the grade. Answers get shorter and more specific. Units appear in calculations. The student starts labelling what the command term is asking before she writes. If after a month of weekly sessions her answers look the same on the page, something is wrong with the match or with the diagnosis, and that is a conversation to have with the coordinator rather than a reason to wait and hope.

At one term, the grade usually starts to move, and it tends to move in Paper 2 before Paper 1. Structured and data-based answers respond quickly to technique work because the marks were there and were not being collected. Multiple choice improves more slowly, because it depends on content security as well as on reading discipline, and a student with genuine content gaps will keep losing Paper 1 marks until those gaps are closed. A term is also long enough to tell whether the scientific investigation is on track or drifting.

Across a full exam cycle, the honest statement is that technique work reliably recovers marks a student was already entitled to, and does not manufacture understanding that was never built. A student two grades below where she wants to be with weak content coverage needs content teaching first and technique second, and a good tutor will say so in week one instead of selling an exam-skills package. IB Gram does not guarantee grades, and a tutor who promises a specific grade at the first meeting is telling you about their sales process rather than about your child.

The limits are worth stating plainly. A weekly session cannot replace attendance, it cannot substitute for the school's own teaching, and it cannot compensate for a student who will not write practice answers between sessions. The single strongest predictor of whether this works is whether the student does timed writing in her own time. Everything above assumes she does. If she will not, the first job of the tutor is to find out why, and that is a different conversation from exam technique.

  • Four weeks: shorter, more specific answers and units in every calculation
  • One term: Paper 2 marks move first, Paper 1 follows more slowly
  • One cycle: recovered marks, not invented understanding
  • Content gaps need content teaching before technique work pays
  • No timed practice between sessions means no progress, whoever the tutor is

Starting IB home tuition in Mumbai: what to have ready

Have three things ready and the first session will be useful instead of exploratory: the most recent marked script with the marker's comments still on it, the school's deadline list for the term, and a straight answer about which evenings are genuinely free for the next three months. The third one matters more than parents expect, because a slot chosen optimistically in June is the slot that gets cancelled in October.

The first session itself is diagnostic. A competent tutor will spend much of it watching the student answer questions rather than talking, because the diagnosis lives in how she starts an answer, how long she stares at a graph before writing, and whether she reaches for the command term or for the topic. Expect the tutor to finish that session able to name two specific habits to change, and to tell you what those are in plain language.

From the second session the pattern settles: a short recap of the last piece of written work, one new technique worked on explicitly, timed practice in the room, and a written task to do before the next visit. Sports, Exercise and Health Science home classes Mumbai families run through a full DP2 year usually look boring from the outside, and boring is what works here.

Tell the coordinator what you want to have changed by the next mock. That single sentence shapes the plan more than any form does, and it gives you something concrete to measure the tutor against in December instead of a vague sense that things are going fine.

  • Bring the last marked script, not a list of topics
  • Bring the school's term deadline list, including the investigation dates
  • Be honest about which evenings survive fixtures and extra school sessions
  • Expect a diagnostic first session, not a lesson
  • Name what you want changed by the next mock
FAQs

Mumbai tutoring — questions parents ask

How are IB tuition fees in Mumbai worked out for this subject?+

They depend on five things, and none of them is a fixed list price. IB tuition fees in Mumbai move with the level, since Higher Level work including Paper 3 is priced above Standard Level; with subject scarcity, and Sports, Exercise and Health Science is scarcer than Biology; with session length, because a ninety-minute script-marking session is not two forty-five-minute ones; with travel, so a tutor crossing a zone costs more than one in your corridor; and with the tutor's own examining or teaching background. Ask for the rate and the travel expectation together, because quoting one without the other is how disputes start in month two.

Will a tutor travel to our building in Kharghar for a weekday evening slot?+

Yes, if the tutor is matched within Navi Mumbai rather than pulled across the creek. Kharghar sits on the Harbour Line and Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1, and a tutor based in Belapur, Nerul, Seawoods or Panvel reaches it comfortably for a 6pm or 7pm start. A tutor from Bandra or Powai can technically make the trip on the Atal Setu, and that arrangement usually survives about six weeks before cancellations begin. We will tell you which category a proposed tutor falls into rather than letting you find out in October.

Our society requires a gate pass for every visitor. How does that work for a weekly tutor?+

Register the tutor once as a recurring visitor rather than clearing them at the gate every week. Most Mumbai societies, particularly the larger Hiranandani, Lodha and Oberoi complexes, allow a standing entry for regular service visitors once a resident sponsors them in writing to the committee or through the society app. Do this in the first fortnight. The alternative is fifteen minutes lost at the gate every session, which over a term is several hours of paid time spent in a lobby, and it is the most common avoidable friction in home tuition across the city.

Can we start home tuition in DP2 if the mocks went badly?+

Yes, and February is not too late for technique work specifically. Home tuition started after mocks has one advantage: there is a real script with real losses on it, so the diagnosis takes one session rather than three. What a late start cannot fix is missing content. If the mock showed that whole topics were never secure, the honest plan is content first and technique alongside it, with fewer topics covered properly rather than all of them covered thinly. A tutor who promises full syllabus coverage and exam-technique transformation in eight weeks is describing a timetable that does not exist.

My son trains with the school team most evenings. Can sessions work around that?+

Usually yes, by moving to a fixed weekend morning for the season rather than fighting the fixture list. Students in this subject very often play seriously, and the fixture calendar collides with mock season almost every year. A standing Saturday or Sunday morning slot survives a season in a way that a Tuesday evening does not, and it has a second benefit: the student is not arriving at a session already tired. Agree the seasonal pattern with the tutor at the start of the term, not in the week the fixtures are announced.

Does online tuition work as well for exam technique?+

For drilling command terms and data-based questions, close to as well; for marking scripts together, not quite. Online works when the student photographs her script clearly and the tutor annotates it on a shared screen, and it keeps the slot alive through tournaments, travel and monsoon disruption. What it loses is the tutor seeing how she works: how long before she starts writing, whether she draws or copies a diagram, whether she rereads the stem. Most Mumbai families end up hybrid, with home sessions for script work and online for everything else.

What happens if the tutor is not working out after three sessions?+

Tell the coordinator and a replacement is shortlisted; you do not have to manage the conversation with the tutor yourself. Three sessions is a reasonable point to judge, because by then you should have seen a diagnosis, a plan and at least one piece of marked work. The usual reasons for a mismatch are honest ones: a teaching style that does not suit the student, or a tutor whose strength is content when the student needed technique. Say which it was, because it makes the second match much more accurate than the first.

There has been no visible progress after a month. What should we do?+

Ask to see the marked work from the last four sessions before changing anything. In the first month the change should show up in how answers are written rather than in a grade, so look for shorter answers, named structures, units in calculations and explicit use of command terms. If those are present, the grade usually follows within a term. If the written work looks identical to a month ago, the diagnosis was probably wrong, and the right move is a call with the coordinator rather than a quiet decision to stop. A weak match found at four weeks costs far less than one found in February.

Can a tutor help with the scientific investigation?+

With the thinking and the writing, yes; with running it, no. A tutor can help the student sharpen a research question into something answerable, check whether the variables are genuinely controllable, work through how raw data becomes processed data, handle uncertainties properly, and write an evaluation that is honest about limitations rather than apologetic. All practical work, any measurement involving a person and all ethics clearance belong to the school and the student's own teacher, who supervises it. Nothing in the investigation should ever be attempted at home, and a tutor who suggests otherwise should be reported to us.

Do you cover Higher Level Paper 3?+

Yes, where the tutor has taught Higher Level in this subject, which is a smaller group than those who have taught Standard Level. Paper 3 expects the same precision as the other papers applied to Higher Level material, so the technique work is continuous rather than separate: the same discipline about command terms, the same insistence on naming rather than describing, the same treatment of units and significant figures. Confirm the current structure of every paper with your Diploma Programme coordinator and the school's current subject guide, because the IB revises subject guides on its own cycle.

Can the tutor tell us what grade my daughter will end up with?+

No, and you should treat a confident prediction as a warning sign rather than as expertise. A tutor can tell you what her current scripts are scoring against the published scheme, which specific habits are costing marks, and whether those habits are the kind that change quickly. That is a far more useful statement than a number. IB Gram does not guarantee grades, and no honest tutor offers a guaranteed grade, because the final mark depends on the school, the student's own work between sessions, and an examination nobody in this conversation controls.

How are missed sessions handled when the monsoon commute collapses?+

Agree the rule before the monsoon rather than during it. The workable arrangement most families settle on is that a session cancelled by the tutor is rescheduled or dropped, a session cancelled by the family with reasonable notice is rescheduled once, and a session that cannot physically happen because Ghodbunder Road or the Andheri subway has gone under converts to online at the same time rather than being lost. Agreeing that conversion rule in June saves an argument in July, and it is the single most useful line in any tuition arrangement in this city.

Find your Mumbai tutor

Send us the DP year, the level, the school and the most recent marked script, and say which evenings are genuinely free. A coordinator reads the script, calls you briefly, and comes back with two or three tutor profiles matched to your zone, each with a first-session plan. You book a trial lesson at home, tell us honestly what you thought, and we either fix the weekly slot or shortlist again.
