How does IB Gram shortlist a beginner Spanish tutor in Mumbai?

IB Gram reads what you have written, filters for tutors who have taught Spanish from zero inside the Diploma Programme rather than Spanish in general, and sends you two or three names with their real availability for your corner of Mumbai. You contact them yourself. Nobody is allocated to your child without your agreement, and you are not handed a directory to sift through.

The filter that matters for this subject is narrower than most parents expect. Plenty of competent Spanish teachers in Mumbai have taught adults at a language institute in the evenings, or taught Spanish B to students who already had years of the language behind them. A beginner in the first year of the Diploma Programme needs something different: a teacher who can build sound, spelling and a first verb paradigm in the same month, explaining in English where that saves time, assuming nothing. When a parent asks for an IB DP Spanish ab initio tutor in Mumbai, that beginner-teaching history is the first thing we look for and the thing most of the shortlist falls down on.

Travel is the second filter and it is unglamorous. A tutor who lives in Kandivali East and a family in Cuffe Parade can agree on a lovely plan in June and watch it collapse by August, because the Western Express Highway at six in the evening does not care about anybody's good intentions. So we match inside corridors first, along the Western Line or up the Eastern Express Highway, and only reach across the city when the subject is scarce enough to justify it. Spanish at beginner level sometimes is that scarce, which is why we will tell you honestly if the only strong match for your slot is an online one.

Two things we will not do. We will not tell you that a tutor is the strongest Spanish teacher in the city, because that is unverifiable and we do not know it. And we do not guarantee grades, in this subject or any other, because the person who sits the paper in May is your child and not us. What we can do is narrow a wide field to a few people whose documents have been seen and whose beginner teaching is real.

  • 1. You send the year, the school, the zone and the days that genuinely work
  • 2. We filter for beginner Spanish teaching inside the Diploma Programme
  • 3. We check identity, qualifications and references before any name reaches you
  • 4. You receive two or three profiles with availability, not a search box
  • 5. You run a first paid session and tell us whether to continue
  • 6. We replace the tutor on request, without making you justify it

Where Spanish ab initio sits in the IB Diploma Programme

Spanish ab initio is a language acquisition course in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP), offered at Standard Level (SL) only, and designed for students with little or no previous experience of the language. It is one of the routes through the second language group alongside Spanish B, which is for students who already have several years of Spanish. The distinction is not about ability. It is about starting point.

That single fact shapes everything else. A student who takes Spanish B has usually met the language in the Middle Years Programme (MYP) or at a previous school and spends the Diploma deepening it. A student who takes Spanish ab initio meets the language for the first time at fifteen or sixteen and has two academic years to reach a point where she can write a short message in it, understand a recorded conversation in it and talk about a photograph in it under examination conditions. Nobody who has done both would call the second task smaller.

Because the course is Standard Level only, Spanish ab initio cannot be one of your child's Higher Level (HL) subjects. For a Mumbai student building a six-subject diploma, that often works well: it leaves the Higher Levels for Economics, Physics, Psychology or whatever the university application actually needs, and keeps the language requirement at a level that can be fitted around a Chemistry Internal Assessment (IA) and the Extended Essay (EE). Families at Dhirubhai Ambani International School in Bandra Kurla Complex and at Ecole Mondiale World School in Juhu routinely build the diploma this way.

The one thing to settle early is whether ab initio is the correct course at all. Placement is the school's decision, taken with the family, usually after a conversation with the language department and sometimes after a short diagnostic. A tutor does not make that call and neither does IB Gram. If your child has real prior Spanish, the school will often move her to Spanish B, and a good tutor will say so in the first fortnight rather than the sixth month. Written out in full, the request a coordinator would recognise is Spanish ab initio IB Diploma Programme (DP), Years 1-2 tutor Mumbai, and it is worth sending it to us in that much detail.

  • Language acquisition group, Standard Level only, designed for true beginners
  • Spanish B is the route for students with years of prior Spanish
  • Cannot be counted as one of your child's Higher Level subjects
  • Placement between ab initio and B is decided by the school with you
  • Check your school's current subject guide for the live assessment structure

What the papers and the individual oral ask of a true beginner

Spanish ab initio is examined through Paper 1, which is writing, Paper 2, which is listening and reading, and the individual oral, which is conducted and recorded in school. A Spanish ab initio tutor in Mumbai working with a first-year beginner is building towards all three from roughly the same small stock of language, which is why the early work looks repetitive and why it should not be skipped.

Paper 1 asks your child to produce short written texts for a stated audience and purpose. The text types are the ordinary ones a beginner can realistically handle, and each carries conventions that are learnable in an afternoon and forgettable in a week: how a message opens and closes, whether it addresses the reader formally or informally, whether it carries a date or a sign-off. Marks are lost here by students whose Spanish is adequate and whose format is wrong, which is a cheap loss and an avoidable one.

Paper 2 is two skills in one sitting. The listening section plays recorded Spanish at something close to real speed, spoken by people from across the Spanish-speaking world, so a student who has only ever heard her own teacher is in trouble. The reading section puts short authentic-looking texts in front of her and asks for specific information from them. Both reward a beginner who has built listening stamina deliberately rather than hoping for it.

The individual oral is built around a visual stimulus. Your child describes what she sees, relates it to the theme it belongs to, and then sustains a conversation with her teacher through follow-up questions she has not seen. That second half is where rehearsed answers come apart. For current details of each component, the length of the papers and how they are weighted, read the subject guide your school's Diploma Programme coordinator works from rather than any page on the internet, including this one, because the IB revises its guides on its own cycle.

  • Paper 1: short written texts with a stated audience and purpose
  • Paper 2: listening at real speed plus reading for specific information
  • Individual oral: a visual stimulus, then unscripted follow-up questions
  • Text type conventions are quick to learn and quick to lose again
  • Ask your coordinator for the current guide, not a figure from a blog

Spanish ab initio home classes across all six Mumbai zones

IB Gram matches tutors in six zones of Mumbai, Maharashtra: South Mumbai, the Western Suburbs, the Central Suburbs, the Eastern Suburbs, Navi Mumbai and Thane. Each behaves differently once you put a weekly appointment on it, and for a beginner language that weekly appointment has to be genuinely weekly. Most Spanish ab initio home classes Mumbai families arrange happen on a fixed weekday evening, and a fixed slot survives only if the travel behind it is honest.

South Mumbai is short-distance and slow. A tutor crossing from Worli to Colaba covers eight kilometres and can still lose forty minutes at the Peddar Road and Haji Ali signals, so families in Cuffe Parade, Walkeshwar, Fort and Babulnath are matched inside the island rather than served from the suburbs. The Coastal Road has changed the northbound run more than the southbound one. The Western Suburbs are the deepest pool: Bandra, Khar West, Santacruz West, Juhu, Andheri West, Versova, Goregaon East, Malad, Kandivali East, Borivali and Dahisar East all sit on the Western Line or the Western Express Highway, and matching along that spine works far better than matching across it. Link Road is the quiet alternative when the highway sets.

The Central Suburbs run on the Central Line and the Eastern Express Highway, with Powai and Chandivali hanging off the Jogeshwari Vikhroli Link Road in between. Powai has no station of its own, so a tutor reaches Hiranandani Gardens by road from Andheri East, Kanjurmarg or Ghatkopar, and Metro Line 1 plus the Santacruz Chembur Link Road have made that easier than it was. The Eastern Suburbs stretch from Chembur and Govandi through Vikhroli and Bhandup to Mulund West, and the Eastern Freeway makes Nariman Point reachable from Wadala far faster than the map suggests.

Navi Mumbai is built in nodes: Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar and Panvel, each a short run from the next along Palm Beach Road or the Sion Panvel Highway, with the Harbour Line, the Trans-Harbour Line and Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 underneath. The Atal Setu has cut the island crossing dramatically, but we still match node to node for a weekday slot. Thane spreads from the station across Pokhran Road, Majiwada and Ghodbunder Road, and Ghodbunder sets the timetable: twenty minutes to Kasarvadavali off-peak, nearly an hour at eight in the evening. An IB DP Spanish ab initio tutor in Mumbai is matched to one of these corridors, not to the city in the abstract.

  • South Mumbai: Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Worli, Walkeshwar, Fort, Babulnath
  • Western Suburbs: Bandra, Khar West, Juhu, Andheri West, Goregaon East, Borivali
  • Central and Eastern: Powai, Chandivali, Ghatkopar, Chembur, Bhandup, Mulund West
  • Navi Mumbai: Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar and Panvel, matched node to node
  • Thane: Pokhran Road, Majiwada, Ghodbunder Road out to Kasarvadavali
  • Metro Lines 1, 2A, 3 and 7 have widened several of these matches

What does the Mumbai school calendar do to a first-year beginner?

It front-loads the damage. The Mumbai IB school year opens in late June or early July, and a Spanish ab initio student who drifts through July and August arrives at her first set of October assessments with no foundation to fall back on, because in a beginner language there is nothing underneath the first term. In Mathematics a weak September can be repaired with a strong November. In a language started from zero, September was the foundation.

The calendar then gets crowded in ways that have nothing to do with Spanish. Mumbai schools stack their first-year internal assessments around the Diwali break and again in February, and the second Diploma year brings Internal Assessment drafts, the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge (TOK) deadlines into the same fortnights. A student at Cathedral and John Connon School in Fort or at B.D. Somani International School in Cuffe Parade will find her Spanish practice quietly abandoned in those weeks unless the slot is protected. Monsoon disruption through July and August takes out sessions in Thane and along Ghodbunder Road with no notice at all.

Families at Oberoi International School on the Jogeshwari Vikhroli Link Road, Hiranandani Foundation School in Powai, Aditya Birla World Academy in Tardeo, the American School of Bombay in Bandra Kurla Complex and D.Y. Patil International School in Nerul all work to slightly different internal calendars, so the sensible first step is to put your child's own assessment dates in front of the tutor in week one and plan backwards from them. IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with any of these schools, with the International Baccalaureate organisation, or with any Spanish-language certification body. Naming a school here is local context, nothing more.

The practical answer is a protected slot and a short daily habit. Fifteen minutes of Spanish on five days does more for a beginner than two hours on a Sunday, because the thing being built in the first term is recall speed, and recall speed is built by frequency. A home tutor who sees your child every Tuesday evening and sets something small for the other four days is doing the job properly. IB home tuition in Mumbai is worth booking around that protected slot rather than around whichever hour happens to be free this week.

  • Term opens late June or early July; the first term has nothing beneath it
  • Diwali and February are the two internal assessment pressure points
  • Second-year IA, Extended Essay and TOK deadlines collide with language practice
  • Monsoon weeks cost sessions in Thane and along Ghodbunder Road
  • Give the tutor your child's own assessment calendar in the first week

Home tuition, online or hybrid for a beginner in Mumbai?

Home tuition first, because for a student starting a language at sixteen the room matters. A home tutor sees the exercise book, the vocabulary list stuck to the cupboard and the phone face-up on the table, and can stop a bad habit in the week it forms rather than the term it hardens. An IB DP Spanish ab initio tutor in Mumbai working in your flat also gets the one thing a beginner needs most, which is a student who cannot hide: there is nowhere to mute yourself when somebody is sitting across the table asking you to say it again. An IB home tutor in Mumbai costs more per hour than an online one and is worth it in the first term for most beginners.

Home tuition has two real costs and you should know both. It is more expensive, because travel time is real time and tutors price it. And it is fragile in exactly the places this city is fragile: a 7pm slot in Lower Parel in August, a Ghodbunder Road run in the monsoon, a tutor coming from Andheri to Kharghar across the creek. If your slot sits on one of those routes, expect to lose sessions, and decide in advance whether a lost session is rescheduled or dropped.

Online suits this subject better than it suits most. A beginner's work is talking, listening and short written pieces, all of which travel down a video call intact, and the shared document means every correction your child receives is typed and kept rather than said and lost. The honest weakness is the handwritten paper: a student who has typed Spanish for two years with autocorrect quietly fixing her accents will meet a pen in the examination hall. Any serious online arrangement needs handwritten work photographed and marked. An IB online tutor in Mumbai can cover Paper 2 listening drill better than almost any home arrangement, because the clips and the shared file are already on the screen.

Hybrid is what most families settle into by the second term, and it is not a compromise. One home session a week for speaking, correction and the exercise book, one shorter online session for listening drill and vocabulary recall, and the monsoon stops costing you a fortnight of Spanish. Several of our Navi Mumbai and Thane families run exactly this pattern because the alternative is a tutor spending ninety minutes on Palm Beach Road for a sixty-minute lesson.

  • Home classes: the tutor sees the book, the phone and the actual habits
  • Home tuition costs more because travel time is priced into the hour
  • Online holds up well for speaking, listening and corrected short writing
  • Online needs handwritten Spanish photographed and marked, or accents rot
  • Hybrid survives the monsoon and long cross-creek or Ghodbunder Road runs

How IB Gram checks a Spanish home tutor, and what you should check

Before a name reaches your shortlist IB Gram sees government photo identity, the degree or language qualification the tutor claims, and references from previous families or schools. We ask specifically what the tutor has taught: Spanish ab initio, Spanish B, Spanish at an institute, or Spanish to adults, because those are four different jobs. A tutor who has only done the fourth can be excellent and still be wrong for a sixteen-year-old sitting a Diploma Programme examination in two years.

What we cannot verify, we tell you we cannot verify. We do not run police checks, we do not audit anybody's past results, and we would not repeat a results claim to you even if it were offered, because we have no way to stand behind it. Any platform that quotes you a strike rate for a language nobody in the family speaks is asking you to take a number on trust. We would rather hand you three checked profiles and let you judge the teaching yourself. Parents often search for the best IB tutor in Mumbai and there is no such person, only a good fit for one student in one subject at one starting point.

So check these things in the first session, when you can still change your mind cheaply. Ask the tutor how she would teach the Spanish alphabet and the sound-to-spelling rules in week one, and listen for whether she has a sequence or is improvising. Ask what she does when a student can say a sentence but not write it. Ask her to mark one short piece of your child's writing in front of you and explain what the criteria reward. A teacher who has done this before answers in specifics within thirty seconds. A home tutor for Spanish ab initio Mumbai families keep for two full years is almost always one who passed that first-session test rather than one with the longest list of qualifications.

Be wary of a tutor who offers a guaranteed grade, and be equally wary of one who promises a specific grade by a specific month. Be wary too of anyone who offers to draft a piece of your child's assessed work. A tutor may teach, model and mark, and may show your child how a text type is built. The words your child submits must be your child's own, and when a request to book an IB DP Spanish ab initio tutor in Mumbai comes with a hint that the tutor will write the oral script, we decline the request.

  • Photo identity, claimed qualifications and prior references seen before shortlisting
  • We ask which Spanish the tutor has taught, and to whom, in detail
  • No police checks and no audited results claims; we say so plainly
  • Ask for a week-one sequence on sounds and spelling, and listen for specifics
  • Watch for anyone offering to draft your child's assessed writing

Starting Spanish at sixteen: what the first term really decides

The thing that surprises families is the pace. A beginner course sounds gentle, and the first three weeks are gentle, and then the course starts moving at the speed of a Diploma subject because that is what it is. Your child has two academic years to go from nothing to producing and understanding Spanish under examination conditions, and the course does not slow down for a student who spent the monsoon term treating it as the light option. Spanish ab initio is not the route to an easy score, and a student who chose it on that assumption usually discovers the error in October.

Spanish does hand a beginner two genuine gifts, and a good tutor spends them properly. The first is that the writing system is highly regular: once your child knows the five vowel values and a handful of consonant rules, she can read an unfamiliar word aloud and be right, and she can hear a word and spell it. That feedback loop is worth an enormous amount at the start, and it is the reason a Spanish beginner can usually read aloud intelligibly within a fortnight. The second gift is the ordinary sentence shape, which is close enough to English that early sentences come quickly.

The real work is the verb system, and the first term decides how that goes. Spanish verbs change their endings for person, and then for time, and then there are two verbs for being and a family of verbs that put the object where an English speaker expects the subject. A student who has genuinely absorbed the present tense of regular verbs plus a small set of irregular ones by the Diwali break can be taught the past tenses in the second year. A student who is still guessing endings in January is now learning the past while patching the present, and she will feel it in the oral, where there is no time to work anything out.

This is why the first term matters more here than in almost any other Diploma subject. There is no earlier year of Spanish to fall back on and no general knowledge to carry her through a question she has not prepared. The organising structure the course gives you is the set of themes, covering identities, experiences, human ingenuity, social organisation and the planet we share, and they are useful precisely because they tell you which vocabulary to build first. A tutor who teaches the themes as the spine, rather than teaching grammar in a vacuum and hoping it lands somewhere, gives a beginner something to attach each new structure to.

  • Two academic years from zero to examination conditions, at Diploma pace
  • Regular sound-to-spelling correspondence is the beginner's biggest early win
  • Verb endings for person, then tense, then ser and estar, then gustar-type verbs
  • Present tense secure by Diwali or the past tenses arrive on sand
  • The themes tell you which vocabulary to build first, and in what order

What should progress look like after four weeks, one term and one exam cycle?

At four weeks a beginner should be able to read unfamiliar Spanish aloud and be roughly right, introduce herself and her family, count, ask a few questions and recognise the present-tense endings of regular verbs when she sees them. She will not be conversing. If she still cannot sound out a written word after a month of weekly sessions, something is wrong with the teaching sequence and you should say so that week rather than at the end of term.

At one term the markers change. She should be writing short pieces in the beginner text types with the right opening and closing, handling the present tense of regular verbs without stopping to think, and getting the gist of a slow recording on a familiar theme. She should also have an error list of her own: the four or five mistakes she actually makes, written down, rather than a general sense of being bad at grammar. A home tutor who cannot show you that list after three months has not been tracking anything.

At one exam cycle, meaning the trial examinations in the second year, you want her finishing Paper 1 in time with the format correct, scoring on the reading section by locating information rather than guessing from words that look English, and surviving the follow-up questions in a practice oral without the answer collapsing when the question changes. That is the realistic shape of a Standard Level beginner's progress, and it is enough.

The honest limits. Some students find a new language genuinely hard at sixteen, and effort alone does not fix it quickly; others plateau for a month and then jump. Four to six weeks is usually enough to tell whether a particular tutor and a particular student work together, and if the answer is no, tell us and we will send other names without asking you to defend the decision. We do not guarantee grades. What a good tutor controls is the quality of the hour and the honesty of the feedback, and in a beginner language that is most of what is available to control.

  • Four weeks: reading aloud accurately, introductions, regular present-tense endings
  • One term: correct text-type openings, fluent present tense, gist of slow audio
  • Three months: a written list of her own recurring errors, not vague worry
  • Trial exams: Paper 1 finished in time, reading located rather than guessed
  • Four to six weeks is long enough to judge a tutor and ask for a change

Booking an IB DP Spanish ab initio tutor in Mumbai

Send four things and the shortlist gets much better: the Diploma year your child is in, the school, the Mumbai zone and nearest station or road, and the two or three evening slots that genuinely work every week rather than the ones that would be ideal. If the subject choice is still open, say that too, because it changes which tutor we look for. Families searching for IB tutors near me Mumbai usually leave out the slot, and the slot is what breaks most matches.

Have ready whatever Spanish material the school has issued: the themes list, the course outline, the vocabulary sheets and any marked work, however short. For a beginner in the first term there may be very little, and that is fine. What the tutor really wants to see is the assessment calendar, because planning backwards from the October and February pressure points is the difference between a course that is kept up with and one that is caught up on.

The first session is diagnostic and it should not feel like a lesson. Expect the tutor to test sound-to-spelling with words your child has never seen, check whether she can hear the difference between two similar recordings, ask her to produce three sentences about herself, and mark one short piece of writing against the criteria while explaining what the criteria reward. By the end of the hour you should have a plan for the next month in plain English: what gets built first, what gets left until the second year, what happens on the four days the tutor is not there.

After that, the arrangement is between you and the tutor and we stay out of the teaching. We will check in after the first few weeks, ask whether the slot is holding, and swap the tutor if it is not. An IB private tutor Mumbai parents find for themselves may well be excellent; what IB Gram adds is that the documents were seen first, the beginner teaching was asked about specifically, and somebody will answer the phone when the Tuesday slot stops working.

  • Send year, school, zone and the slots that genuinely repeat every week
  • Bring the themes list, any vocabulary sheets and the assessment calendar
  • First session: sound-to-spelling diagnostic, a short recording, three sentences
  • You leave the first hour with a month's plan written in plain English
  • Tell us at four weeks if it is not working and we send other names
FAQs

Mumbai tutoring — questions parents ask

Can my child really start Spanish from nothing in the Diploma Programme?+

Yes, that is exactly what Spanish ab initio is designed for. The course assumes no previous Spanish and begins with sounds, spelling and the most ordinary sentence shapes. What it does not assume is a spare year, so the pace tightens quickly after the first few weeks. A student starting in late June should expect to be reading unfamiliar words aloud within a fortnight and handling the present tense of regular verbs by the Diwali break. Beginners who treat July and August as a warm-up usually spend the whole of the second year catching up, because there is no earlier Spanish underneath them.

Is Spanish ab initio an easy way to pick up points?+

No, and a tutor who tells you otherwise has not taught it. Standard Level beginner courses are examined at Diploma standard against criteria written for the course, so your child is judged on how well she does what a beginner is asked to do, not graded generously for being new. She must write to a stated audience, understand recorded Spanish at natural speed and hold an unscripted conversation about a photograph. Students who chose it as the light option typically realise in October. The course is very doable; it is not a shortcut, and the first term is where that becomes obvious.

My daughter already speaks some Spanish at home. Can she still take ab initio?+

That is the school's decision, taken with you, and it is usually settled before the course begins. Ab initio is written for genuine beginners, so a student with real prior Spanish, whether from a previous school or from family use at home, is normally placed in Spanish B instead. If the school has already placed her in ab initio and her Spanish turns out to be stronger than expected, raise it with the language department and the Diploma Programme coordinator early. A tutor can give an honest read on her actual level, but cannot move her and should not pretend otherwise.

Can a tutor travel to Worli for a weekday evening home tuition slot?+

Usually yes, if the tutor is matched from inside South Mumbai rather than brought down from the suburbs. Worli is well placed for a tutor living in Prabhadevi, Lower Parel or Mahalaxmi, and the Bandra Worli Sea Link makes a Bandra or Khar West tutor workable for an early evening slot. What rarely holds for a full term is a 7pm Worli slot served from Andheri or Thane, because the Peddar Road and Haji Ali signals turn eight kilometres into forty minutes. Tell us your slot and we will say plainly which corridors can reach it.

How do society gate passes and building security work for a home tutor?+

You arrange it once and then it runs itself. Most Mumbai societies will issue a standing visitor entry or a recurring gate pass for a weekly tutor if a resident registers the name, the day and the time with the office, which is quicker than approving a fresh visitor every Tuesday. Larger complexes in Powai, Kharghar and along Ghodbunder Road often want a photo identity number on file, so ask your tutor for it in week one. Where a society insists on an escort to the lobby, factor five minutes into the session start rather than losing them from the hour.

What do IB tuition fees in Mumbai depend on for a beginner language?+

Five things, and no honest page can quote you a figure. Rates move with the board and level, with how scarce the subject is, with travel distance and time of day, with session length, and with how experienced the tutor is at teaching this specific course. Spanish at beginner level inside the Diploma Programme sits in a thinner pool than Mathematics or Physics, so it tends to price higher than a mainstream subject in the same area. A long cross-city run in the evening peak costs more than a match inside your own corridor, which is one practical reason to accept a nearby tutor.

How many sessions a week does a beginner need in the first Diploma year?+

Most beginners do best on two shorter sessions a week rather than one long one, plus a short daily habit. The first term is about recall speed, and recall is built by frequency, not by duration. Fifteen minutes of vocabulary and verb endings on five days beats a single two-hour Sunday block, because the Sunday block teaches your child the material and then gives her six days to forget it. Where only one session is possible, the tutor should be setting something genuinely small for the other days and checking it, not setting a worksheet nobody looks at.

Which variety of Spanish will the tutor teach?+

Spanish is spoken across Spain, Mexico, Central and South America and the Caribbean, and every one of those varieties is fully legitimate Spanish. The examination recognises this: recordings and texts come from more than one country, and your child will not be marked down for using one standard consistently. Pronunciation, some everyday vocabulary and the second-person forms differ between regions, so the useful thing is exposure to several accents rather than loyalty to one. A tutor who dismisses any variety as incorrect is teaching your child something false and unhelpful for the listening section.

What happens if the tutor is not working out after three weeks?+

Tell us and we send other names, and you do not have to build a case for it. Fit in a beginner language is about more than subject knowledge: a tutor who talks over a shy student, or who explains everything in English because it is faster, can be perfectly qualified and still wrong for your child. Four to six weeks is usually long enough to tell. We will ask what specifically did not work, because it makes the next shortlist better, and then shortlist again for the same slot. Nobody is locked into a term.

Does online really work for a beginner, or should we insist on home classes?+

Both work, and the better question is which one your child will actually keep. Home classes suit a beginner who needs to be in the room with somebody, cannot be allowed to mute herself, and benefits from a tutor seeing the exercise book. Online suits a family whose slot sits on a route that collapses in the evening peak, and it has one real advantage: every correction is typed into a shared document and kept. Its weakness is handwriting and accents. If you go online, insist that handwritten Spanish is photographed and marked every week.

Can the tutor help directly with the oral and the written assessments?+

A tutor can teach, model, drill and mark, and must not write. She can show your child how a beginner text type is built, write a model of her own for comparison, run practice orals with unseen follow-up questions, and mark drafts against the criteria with specific feedback. What she cannot do is draft, redraft or supply any part of what your child submits, including an oral script. Every word submitted has to be your child's own. Any tutor offering more than this is putting an academic honesty investigation between your child and her diploma, which is a poor trade.

What should we have ready before the first session?+

The school's course outline and themes list, any vocabulary sheets issued so far, one piece of marked work if there is any, and the assessment calendar for the year. Also useful: an honest sentence about how your child feels about the subject, because a beginner who is embarrassed to speak needs a different first month from one who is simply behind. If almost nothing has been issued yet because term has just started, come with the calendar alone. The tutor will spend the first hour finding the real starting point rather than teaching from an assumed one.
