IB DP Physics HL Online Tutor in Mumbai

An IB DP Physics HL online tutor in Mumbai lives or dies on one thing: whether both people can draw. Physics is taught through free-body diagrams, ray diagrams, circuit sketches and field lines, so the setup matters as much as the teacher. This page explains what works through a screen, what does not, and when home tuition is the better call.

How we match an IB DP Physics HL online tutor in Mumbai

Matching for remote Physics teaching involves one step that matching for any other subject does not: we check how the tutor draws. A Higher Level Physics session is a sequence of sketches. A free-body diagram redrawn three times as the student realises the normal force is not vertical. A ray diagram where the object sits inside the focal length. A circuit where the ammeter has been put in parallel by mistake. If a tutor cannot produce those live, on a surface the student can watch filling in, the session collapses into narration and the student stops following within ten minutes.

So before a profile reaches a parent, the tutor demonstrates their setup to us. We want to see which device they draw on, how quickly a fresh page appears, whether the student can draw on the same surface, and whether they can switch to looking at a photograph of the student's handwritten work and annotate it without losing three minutes. A tutor with a graphics tablet and a practised habit of leaving the diagram on screen while they talk beats a more decorated tutor who shares a slide deck.

The rest of the intake is ordinary. We ask which Diploma Programme (DP) year the student is in, which topics they are currently behind on, whether the problem is the physics or the mathematics underneath it, and what their home internet and device situation looks like. A student working on a phone in a shared room in Mulund has a different problem from one with a tablet and a closed door in Khar West, and pretending otherwise wastes a term. We also ask what the student has already tried, because a child who has watched thirty hours of video lectures and still cannot start a question has a very specific gap.

You then get two or three profiles, each naming the Higher Level topics that tutor teaches most and the drawing setup they use. A trial session is arranged before anything is booked for a term, and you are asked to watch the first fifteen minutes of it. If the student cannot see what is being drawn, that is visible in fifteen minutes and there is no reason to find out in week six.

  • 1. Tell us the DP year, the weak topics and the device at home
  • 2. We shortlist tutors whose drawing setup has been demonstrated to us
  • 3. You read two or three profiles naming the HL topics each covers
  • 4. A trial session runs before any term booking is made
  • 5. Watch the first fifteen minutes and check the student can see

What Higher Level Physics looks like when it is taught through a screen

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) assesses Physics through written papers, named Paper 1A, Paper 1B, Paper 2 and Paper 3 in the current structure, and through an internally assessed scientific investigation the student carries out at school. We will not quote durations, mark totals or the weight each component carries, because those belong to the subject guide your child's cohort is sitting and the guide is the only reliable source for them. Ask the subject teacher for the correct version and read the assessment outline inside it.

What matters for remote teaching is the shape of the thinking each component demands. Higher Level (HL) Physics is not a body of facts delivered to a student. It is a habit of representing a situation before calculating anything: draw the system, mark the forces, choose the positive direction, write the relationship, then substitute. Every one of those steps is visual, and a tutor who talks through them without drawing them is teaching a different subject. A student can memorise a formula from a video. A student cannot learn to choose a sign convention from a video.

The additional higher level material raises the stakes because the representations get harder. Field patterns around charges and masses, phasor-style reasoning, potential wells, and the geometry behind rotational and thermodynamic problems all live in sketches a student must be able to produce under pressure. At Higher Level the examiner is frequently asking the student to reason from a diagram rather than to compute from a given value, and the only way to build that is to produce the diagram repeatedly with someone watching and correcting it.

The scientific investigation is the component that resists remote teaching most, and we are direct about it. The physical experimental work happens in the school laboratory, with the school's apparatus, under a teacher's supervision. No part of it moves to a home or to a screen. A tutor working remotely can discuss method and analysis, but the practical skills themselves, handling apparatus, judging a reading, noticing that the setup has shifted, cannot be taught remotely at all. A family whose main concern is laboratory technique should plan for school support rather than a video call.

  • Papers 1A, 1B, 2 and 3 plus an internally assessed investigation
  • Durations, mark totals and weightings belong to the current subject guide
  • HL Physics is representation first, calculation second, every single time
  • Additional higher level topics lean even harder on sketched reasoning
  • Laboratory technique cannot be taught remotely and stays at school

The diagram problem: free-body diagrams, circuits, rays and field lines

Ask a Physics teacher what they do in the first two minutes of a question and the answer is always the same: they draw. A block on an incline becomes a free-body diagram with weight resolved into components. A lens question becomes a ray diagram with the principal axis, the focal points and three construction rays. A circuit problem becomes a redrawn circuit with the parallel branch pulled out so the student can see it is parallel. A gravitational or electric field question becomes a sketch of field lines with their direction marked. Teaching Physics without drawing is like teaching a language without writing anything down.

That is why remote Physics stands or falls on the drawing setup, and why the setups that work are specific rather than general. The common arrangement that works is a tutor with a pen-enabled tablet or graphics tablet writing onto a shared whiteboard, with the page visible to the student continuously rather than appearing finished. Second best is a document camera, or a phone on a stand pointed at a sheet of paper, which has the advantage that the tutor writes exactly as they would at your dining table. The arrangement that fails is screen-sharing a prepared slide or a PDF with the answer already on it, because a completed diagram teaches nothing about how it was built.

The student side matters just as much and is usually neglected. The student needs a way to show their own work, and the practical minimum is a phone camera and the discipline to photograph a page and send it. A better arrangement gives the student drawing rights on the shared surface, so when the tutor says mark the forces on this block, the student marks them and gets them wrong where the tutor can see it. That is the whole point. A session where only the tutor draws is a lecture, and lectures are available free.

One more thing separates a working remote Physics session from a demonstration: the solution must appear line by line, in real time, in the tutor's handwriting. A student who watches each line being written sees where the thinking turned, which substitution was made and why, and where the sign changed. A student who is sent a finished worked solution sees only the destination. We ask tutors never to paste a complete solution into the chat window during a teaching session. Send it afterwards if it helps, but the session itself is for watching it being built.

  • Free-body diagrams, ray diagrams, circuits and field sketches drive every topic
  • A pen tablet on a shared whiteboard is the reliable tutor setup
  • A phone on a stand over paper is a solid second option
  • The student needs drawing rights or at least a camera and discipline
  • Solutions appear line by line in real time, never pasted complete
  • A finished diagram on a slide teaches nothing about how it was built

Which Mumbai zones online Physics tutoring actually solves

Remote teaching is not a lesser version of a home visit in this city. It is the answer to a specific problem: Mumbai, Maharashtra is large, the specialist pool for Higher Level Physics is small, and the two are badly distributed against each other. The Western Suburbs hold a lot of both families and tutors, so Bandra West, Khar West, Santacruz West, Juhu, Andheri West, Goregaon East, Malad, Kandivali East, Borivali and Dahisar East can often be served either way. Even there, matching across the Western Express Highway at 6pm fails where matching along the Western Line or the Metro Line 2A and Line 7 corridor succeeds, and an IB DP Physics HL online tutor in Mumbai removes that constraint entirely for a household in Dahisar whose best match lives in Bandra.

Thane is where the case is strongest and it is worth being concrete. A family off Ghodbunder Road near Kasarvadavali is twenty minutes from Thane station without traffic and close to an hour in the evening, which is the exact window a DP2 student has free. Pokhran Road, Majiwada and Hiranandani Estate are better placed but still subject to the same crawl, and the Thane to Borivali tunnel corridor has not yet rewritten the evening peak. For these households a fixed 7pm video session simply happens, week after week, while a travelling tutor becomes a negotiation every Tuesday.

Navi Mumbai works the opposite way round. Vashi, Nerul, Seawoods, Belapur, Kharghar, Airoli and Panvel are well connected to each other along Palm Beach Road and the Sion-Panvel Highway, so a local match is usually available and home sessions hold up. The Atal Setu and the Trans-Harbour Line have made the island reachable, but not on a weekday evening for a one-hour lesson. Online here is less about distance and more about scarcity: if the one tutor who teaches the additional higher level topics your child is stuck on happens to live in Powai, the screen is the only way to reach them.

South Mumbai, the Central Suburbs and the Eastern Suburbs each have their own version of the same calculation. On the island, Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Napean Sea Road, Worli, Tardeo and Babulnath are close together but slow, and Metro Line 3 and the Coastal Road help some journeys and not the Peddar Road signals. In the Central Suburbs, Powai and Chandivali have no station and are reached by road from Andheri East, Kanjurmarg or Ghatkopar along JVLR, with the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road carrying the east-west traffic. In the Eastern Suburbs, Chembur, Govandi, Vikhroli, Bhandup, Mulund and Wadala sit on the Central and Harbour lines with the Eastern Freeway and the Eastern Express Highway above them. Parents in all three zones who type looking for an IB tutor near me in Mumbai are really asking whether the right specialist is within a sane drive, and often the honest answer is that they are not, but they are available at 7pm on a screen.

  • Thane households off Ghodbunder Road gain the most from fixed online slots
  • Western Suburbs can usually choose; matching along the line still beats crossing it
  • Navi Mumbai nodes support home visits, so online solves scarcity not distance
  • Powai and Chandivali have no station and depend on JVLR road access
  • South Mumbai is short in kilometres and slow in evening minutes
  • Eastern Suburbs reach the island quickly via the Eastern Freeway

How the Mumbai school calendar shapes an online tutoring term

Remote tutoring is booked by the term, so it is worth knowing which weeks will be dense and which will be empty before you commit to a schedule. Across IB schools in the city the broad shape is similar: a settling stretch at the start of DP1, a build through the middle of the year, internal assessment work occupying the first half of DP2, a mock examination block, and a final run into the examination session. Schools on the November session move the whole thing. Your school's published internal calendar is the document to plan against, not a generic one.

The practical consequence for online booking is that demand for Physics specialists spikes in the same fortnights across the whole city, because the schools follow similar rhythms. A parent trying to start sessions in the week after mock results will find the strongest tutors already committed. Booking a slot before the term starts and holding it loosely costs less than scrambling for one at the point of crisis, and a tutor who already knows the student can expand from fortnightly to weekly when the pressure arrives.

Families across the city are working against calendars set by their own schools, and the mix is wide. Students at Singapore International School in Dahisar East and JBCN International School, Borivali sit at the northern end of the Western Line where evening travel is hardest and remote sessions are most common. Thakur International School in Kandivali East and Billabong High International School draw from the same corridor. Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania School anchors Thane, while Jamnabai Narsee International School and Ecole Mondiale World School in Juhu, Bombay Cambridge International School in Andheri East and Podar International School in Santacruz and Powai spread the demand across the western and central zones.

Naming those schools is local context and nothing more. IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with Singapore International School, JBCN International School, Thakur International School, Billabong High International School, Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania School, Jamnabai Narsee International School, Ecole Mondiale World School or any other school named on this page, and it is not affiliated with the International Baccalaureate organisation. The subject teacher at your school sets the internal deadlines, marks the internal work and knows the cohort. A tutor supplements that teacher and never replaces them.

  • Plan against your own school's published internal calendar, not a generic one
  • Specialist demand spikes citywide in the same fortnights every year
  • Book the slot before the crisis and expand it when pressure arrives
  • November-session schools shift the entire year forward
  • Schools are named as context only; there is no affiliation

Should you choose online, home tuition or a hybrid in Mumbai?

Choose online when the constraint is distance or scarcity, home tuition when the constraint is attention, and hybrid when both apply, which is most households. An IB DP Physics HL online tutor in Mumbai solves a real problem: the right specialist is rarely in your postcode, and a video call makes a Powai tutor available to a Panvel family at a fixed hour every week. It also survives the monsoon, examination leave, a tutor who moves house and the evening a vehicle breaks down on the Eastern Express Highway.

Home tuition wins on a different axis, and the difference is attention rather than content. A tutor in the room notices the student has stopped writing, sees the phone face-up on the table, reads the frustration before it is spoken, and can simply turn the page of a textbook to the worked example being discussed. For students who drift, who will not admit confusion, or who are in DP1 and have not yet built the habit of asking, a home tutor present in the room is worth more than a better qualified one on a screen. IB home tuition in Mumbai also solves the device problem for households where the only reliable laptop belongs to a working parent.

Hybrid is what most families settle into and it works best when deliberately designed. A common pattern is one home visit a fortnight for the heavy diagram-building work and the honest conversation about what is not understood, with weekly online sessions for problem practice, question walkthroughs and script review. Physics home classes Mumbai families run on this pattern tend to hold through the year because neither mode is being asked to do what it is bad at. Decide the split in the first week of term and write it down, rather than letting the home visits quietly lapse in November.

Two honest limits before you choose. First, online sessions demand more of the student than home sessions do, because nobody is in the room to catch a wandering mind, so a student who needs supervision needs a person. Second, practical laboratory skills cannot be taught remotely at all, and a family whose actual concern is that their child is clumsy with apparatus is buying the wrong service in either mode. Talk to the school about laboratory access instead.

  • Online solves distance and specialist scarcity across zones and the creek
  • Home tuition solves attention, drift and the shared-device problem
  • Hybrid: fortnightly home visits for diagrams, weekly online for practice
  • Write the split down in week one so visits do not lapse
  • Laboratory handling skills are taught at school, in neither tutoring mode

How do we check an online Physics tutor you will never meet?

An IB DP Physics HL online tutor in Mumbai is checked harder than a tutor you will meet at your door, precisely because nobody will ever shake this person's hand. Government photo identity is verified against a live video, not a scan alone. The qualification claimed is checked against the subject being taught, so a mechanical engineering degree does not automatically qualify someone to teach Higher Level Physics. Teaching history is taken with boards and levels named, and at least one reference is contacted by us rather than collected as a pasted testimonial. For remote teaching we add the setup demonstration described above, because a tutor who cannot draw live is not teachable into it mid-term.

There are checks only a parent can run and they are quick. Sit in on the first fifteen minutes and watch the screen, not the tutor. Can you see a diagram being built, or are you watching a finished image? Does the student get asked to draw something, or only to listen? At the end of the session, ask your child to reproduce one diagram from memory on paper. If they cannot, the session was a broadcast. An IB private tutor Mumbai parents find through a neighbour may pass every one of these tests, and should be asked to.

Ask about recording as well, and settle it before the term starts. Many families want sessions recorded so a student can rewatch the derivation, and most tutors agree. Decide who holds the recording, how long it is kept and whether the student's face appears in it. The same applies to photographs of the student's handwritten scripts, which get shared constantly in remote Physics teaching and which are schoolwork, not social media.

The academic honesty boundary applies identically online and in person, and it is sharper on a screen because a shared document makes it so easy to cross. A tutor may teach, explain, question and comment on work the student has produced. A tutor may never type an answer into the student's own document, write part of an internally assessed report or produce the student's graphs. If a session involves a shared file that contains the student's assessed work, the tutor's role in it is to ask questions in the margin and nothing more.

  • Identity verified on live video, not from a scanned document alone
  • Qualification checked against the specific subject and level taught
  • Drawing setup demonstrated to us before any profile is released
  • Agree recording, storage and script-sharing rules before the term starts
  • Tutors question and comment on assessed work but never type into it

Which HL Physics topics survive a screen and which need shared paper?

Some topics transfer almost perfectly and some fight you the whole way, and knowing which is which lets you spend your home visits where they count. Kinematics and the algebra-heavy parts of mechanics survive well: the equations are linear, the working is sequential, and a tutor writing line by line on a shared surface loses almost nothing against being in the room. Energy and momentum questions transfer well for the same reason. Circular motion starts to strain, because the geometry of the forces needs a diagram the student redraws several times with the tutor correcting the direction of the net force each time.

Electricity and circuits sit in the middle. Analysing a given circuit works on a screen, but the moment the task is to redraw a circuit so the parallel sections become visible, both people need to be sketching at once, and the student's version must be visible to the tutor as it is drawn rather than photographed afterwards. Optics and ray diagrams are similar: a tutor can demonstrate a construction cleanly on a tablet, but the student has to produce one with a ruler and get the construction rays wrong under observation. Give those topics a home visit if you can, or at minimum insist on a setup where the student draws on the shared surface.

Fields, whether gravitational or electric, are the hardest to teach remotely and the most often fudged. The reasoning depends on seeing a potential and a field as two related pictures, on the direction of a vector at a point on a curve, and on what happens between two sources. Students nod at these on a screen and then cannot produce them in a written answer. The same applies to the parts of the additional higher level material that lean on geometric reasoning. These are the topics where we tell families plainly that a sheet of paper on a table between two people is better, and where a hybrid pattern earns its cost.

Then there is the part that no setup fixes. Practical skills cannot be taught remotely. Judging whether a reading has settled, noticing that a clamp has slipped, developing a feel for how much a measurement wobbles, and the physical habits of using apparatus carefully are all learned by handling equipment in a school laboratory with a teacher present. No video call substitutes for that, and any tutor who suggests replicating an experiment at home to make up for it should be declined immediately. A good remote tutor instead prepares the student for the laboratory hours they do have, so those hours are not wasted.

  • Kinematics, energy and momentum transfer to a screen with little loss
  • Circular motion needs the student redrawing force directions repeatedly
  • Circuit redrawing and ray construction want both people sketching at once
  • Field and potential reasoning is the weakest topic area remotely
  • Reserve home visits for fields, optics and circuit redrawing if budget is tight
  • No setup teaches apparatus handling; that stays in the school laboratory

What a term of remote Physics tutoring should and should not change

At four weeks the thing to look for is not a mark. It is whether the student now starts a question by drawing something. Open their notebook and look at the page before the algebra. If there is a diagram with forces labelled and a chosen positive direction, the tutoring is working even if the answers are still wrong. If the page begins with a formula copied from the data booklet, four weeks have produced nothing, and that conversation should happen in week five and not in March.

At one term you should see the student attempting unfamiliar questions without being prompted, asking the tutor a question rather than answering one, and being able to say which topics they are weak on. Across a full examination cycle, structured teaching tends to move a student who understands the physics but presents it badly more reliably than it moves one who has not understood the material at all, and the second case needs more time than a term. IB Gram does not guarantee grades, and no tutor can, because the examination is marked by people none of us have met against criteria none of us control.

What a term should not change is the student's dependence. A remote tutor who has become the person the student messages before every homework has created a problem, not solved one. Watch for whether the student is attempting work before the session or saving it for the session. The second pattern is comfortable for everyone and produces nothing by May. Say it out loud to the tutor if you see it; a good one will already have noticed.

On cost, IB tuition fees in Mumbai depend on the board, the level, how scarce the specialism is, the length of each session and, for in-person work, how far the tutor travels. Remote sessions remove the travel factor, which is why an online slot with the same tutor often differs in price from a home visit with them. Higher Level Physics sits at the scarcer end whichever mode you choose. If a match is not working, tell us within the first three sessions, say specifically what is wrong, and we replace the tutor with a summary of what has been covered so your child does not start again.

  • Four weeks: the notebook page starts with a diagram, not a formula
  • One term: the student attempts unfamiliar questions without prompting
  • Watch for work being saved for the session instead of attempted first
  • Online removes the travel factor from what a session costs
  • Three sessions is enough to call a mismatch and ask for a replacement

Booking online sessions or home classes for Physics HL in Mumbai

Prepare four things before the trial session. A list of the topics the student is currently stuck on, written by the student rather than by you. A photograph of a recent piece of marked work, including the teacher's comments. The device the student will actually use, set up and charged, with the camera tested. And a decision about where in the home the session will happen, because a student taking a Physics session at a dining table with the television on will not learn to draw field lines.

The trial session itself should be a diagnosis. Expect the tutor to set a question, watch the student attempt it, and interrupt at the point the student stops rather than at the end. Expect at least one diagram to be built on screen and at least one to be demanded from the student. Expect to be told something uncomfortable about where the gap actually is, which is frequently a topic two units earlier than the one the student named. A trial that consists of the tutor explaining a topic smoothly for an hour tells you nothing.

After that, sessions settle into a rhythm: a short review of the work attempted since last time, a block of new teaching built diagram first, and a set of questions to attempt alone before the next session. If you have chosen hybrid, place the home visits at the points identified above, which means fields, optics and circuit redrawing. Families who would rather start with a home tutor for Physics Mumbai schools will recognise as experienced can ask for that and add online sessions later.

Tell us the student's DP year, the topics causing trouble, your zone and whether you want online only or a hybrid pattern. We come back with two or three Physics tutors whose drawing setup we have seen working, you watch a trial before committing to a term, and if the match is wrong you say so and we change it.

  • Student writes their own list of stuck topics before the trial
  • Send a photograph of recent marked work with teacher comments
  • Test the camera and choose a quiet surface in the home
  • A good trial interrupts the student early and names the real gap
  • Say online only or hybrid, and we shortlist accordingly
FAQs

Mumbai tutoring — questions parents ask

Can Physics really be taught properly over a video call?+

Most of it can, if the drawing setup is right, and that is the whole condition. Physics is taught through diagrams, so a tutor needs a pen-enabled tablet or a camera pointed at paper, and the student needs either drawing rights on the same surface or a camera and the habit of photographing their work. With that in place, mechanics, energy, momentum and most problem-solving transfer with little loss. Without it, the session becomes narration over a finished image and the student learns nothing they could not get from a video. Ask to see the setup before you book a term.

What setup does my child actually need at home for online Physics?+

A screen large enough to see a diagram, a camera, and a way to show handwritten work. A laptop or tablet beats a phone by a wide margin, because a phone screen cannot display a worked solution and the student's own page at the same time. A cheap stylus-capable tablet is a genuine upgrade if the budget allows, since it lets the student draw on the shared surface instead of photographing afterwards. Paper, pencil and a ruler still matter more than any of it. Test the camera and the microphone before the trial session rather than during it.

How does a tutor mark my daughter's handwritten solution remotely?+

She photographs the page, sends it, and the tutor annotates it on screen while she watches. This is one of the things remote teaching does well, better in some ways than in person, because the annotated page can be saved and reread. The practical requirements are mundane: good light, the page flat, the whole question in frame, and the photograph sent before the session rather than during it so the tutor has read it. Ask that the annotation happens live with commentary rather than being returned silently, since the reasoning is the point.

Which Physics topics should we book as home visits instead?+

Fields, optics and circuit redrawing, in that order of priority. Gravitational and electric field reasoning depends on seeing a field pattern and a potential as two related pictures, and students nod at that on a screen and then cannot reproduce it in writing. Ray diagrams need the student constructing with a ruler under observation. Circuit questions often require redrawing the circuit so parallel branches become visible, which works far better with both people sketching on the same sheet. Kinematics, energy, momentum and algebraic problem-solving are safe to keep online.

What does online Physics tutoring cost compared with a home visit?+

What an IB DP Physics HL online tutor in Mumbai charges depends on the same factors minus one. Fees vary with the board, the level, how scarce the specialism is and the length of the session, and for in-person work they also vary with how far the tutor travels. Removing travel is why the same tutor may price an online hour differently from a home hour, particularly for a journey like Andheri to Panvel. Higher Level Physics is at the scarcer end of the specialism scale in either mode. We do not publish a price list, because a figure that ignores those factors would misinform you.

We live near Ghodbunder Road in Thane. Is online the sensible choice?+

For most households on that stretch, yes, at least for the weekly sessions. The drive between Majiwada and Kasarvadavali takes twenty minutes off-peak and close to an hour in the evening, which is exactly when a DP2 student is free, so a travelling tutor becomes a weekly negotiation and eventually a cancellation. A fixed online slot simply happens. If you want in-person teaching as well, match a tutor who lives in Thane itself or in Hiranandani Estate for a fortnightly visit, and keep the weekly sessions on a screen.

Can we switch to home tuition later if online is not working?+

Yes, and a reasonable number of families do after the first term. Tell us what specifically is not working, because the answer changes what we look for. If the student is drifting during sessions, you need a person in the room and we match within your zone. If the physics is being explained badly, the mode is not the problem and you need a different tutor. If the device or the home environment is the issue, sometimes a change of room fixes it. Switching mid-term is fine; we carry over a summary of what has been covered.

Does a parent need to be at home during an online session?+

Not in the way a home visit requires, but presence in the house still helps. For online work the useful parental role is at the edges: check the device is ready before the session, be within earshot so a student cannot quietly switch to another tab, and ask for a short update at the end. Sitting beside the student usually suppresses the questions that reveal gaps. For younger DP1 students in a shared flat, agreeing a quiet half hour with the rest of the household does more for the session than anything the tutor controls.

Our flat in Chembur is small and noisy. What do other families do?+

They move the session rather than fight the room. Many buildings in the Eastern Suburbs and Navi Mumbai have a society reading room, a clubhouse study space or a quiet corner of a library that can be booked for a fixed hour each week, and for online sessions all that is needed is a plug point and a signal. Where that is not available, families shift the slot to a time when the household is quieter, often earlier in the evening. Headphones with a microphone solve more of this problem than people expect.

The tutor is good but my son is not improving. What now?+

Check whether he is attempting work between sessions before you change anything. The most common pattern behind a stalled online term is a student saving all the work for the session, so the tutor spends the hour doing problems with him and he never attempts anything alone. That feels productive and produces nothing. Ask the tutor to set and check independent work explicitly. If that is already happening and four weeks have passed with no change in how he starts a question, tell us what you are seeing and we will arrange a different match.

Can an online tutor help with the scientific investigation?+

With the thinking around it, yes; with the practical work, no, and that distinction is firm. A remote tutor can discuss what makes a question answerable, work through uncertainty arithmetic on a shared document, and comment on a draft the student has written. The experimental work happens in the school laboratory, with the school's apparatus, under a teacher's supervision, and no tutor should suggest otherwise or propose a version to attempt at home. A tutor also never writes any part of an assessed report, online or in person, because the work has to be the student's own.

Do you record sessions so my daughter can rewatch a derivation?+

Many tutors will, and it is worth asking before the term begins rather than halfway through. Recordings are genuinely useful in Physics, because a derivation watched a second time at the student's own pace often lands when the live version did not. Settle three things in advance: who stores the recording, how long it is kept, and whether the student appears on camera in it. The same care applies to photographs of handwritten scripts, which move around constantly in remote teaching and are schoolwork rather than anything to be shared further.
