IB DP Philosophy Private Tutor in Mumbai

An IB DP Philosophy private tutor in Mumbai is often hired before the subject choice is even settled, and home tuition is where that conversation usually happens honestly. This page is about who should take Philosophy, what students misjudge about it, the Higher Level decision, how it compares with other Group 3 options, and the DP1 change window.

How we match a private Philosophy tutor in Mumbai to a student who is still deciding

Roughly half the families who ask for an IB DP Philosophy private tutor in Mumbai are not yet certain the subject is the right one. The student picked it in DP1 because the taster lesson was interesting, or because a friend took it, or because the alternative was a science. Six weeks in, the essays are coming back lower than everything else and the family wants to know whether that is a tutoring problem or a choice problem. Those need different answers, and pretending otherwise wastes a term and a fee. So the matching conversation starts with a question nobody enjoys asking: is this subject a fit, or is it being rescued?

To answer that we need something written. An untimed essay, a set of class notes, a reflection the student wrote for another subject, anything that shows how this particular student handles an abstract claim. Fluency is not the signal. Plenty of students who write beautifully in English, and who speak more confidently than their teachers do, turn out to be imprecise in exactly the way International Baccalaureate (IB) Philosophy punishes. Equally, a quiet student whose prose is plain but who never writes a sentence she cannot defend is often a natural. A tutor can see that difference inside one piece of writing.

The process from enquiry to a fixed weekly slot runs in four steps. 1. You tell us the level under consideration, how far into Diploma Programme (DP) 1 the student is, your area, and whether the question on the table is improvement or subject choice. 2. We shortlist tutors who have taught Philosophy through to an examination session and who are willing to give an honest fit opinion rather than simply sell sessions. 3. You take a paid home tuition trial in which the tutor sets a short diagnostic writing task and talks the student through what the marks would reward. 4. You get a plain opinion on fit, and then decide whether to continue, switch subject, or sit a second trial with a different tutor.

An IB private tutor Mumbai families engage at this stage is partly a counsellor and should behave like one. The right outcome of a first session is sometimes that the student should move to another Group 3 subject while the change window is open, and a tutor who says so has done the family a larger favour than one who signs them up for a year. We would rather lose the engagement in week one than carry a student through two years of a subject that was never going to suit them.

  • First question is subject fit, not which topics feel hard
  • Bring any piece of the student's own abstract writing
  • Fluent writing is not evidence of precise writing
  • Trial includes a short diagnostic task and a plain fit opinion
  • A tutor advising a subject change is doing the job properly

Higher Level or Standard Level Philosophy, and the DP1 change window

Philosophy sits in Group 3, individuals and societies, and is taken across DP1 and DP2 at Higher Level (HL) or Standard Level (SL). HL carries additional assessed work and a deeper treatment of the subject than SL does; the precise difference is set by the subject guide in force for your child's examination session, so take the detail from the school's DP coordinator rather than from any page on the internet. The practical difference families should plan around is reading time. HL Philosophy expects a student to read beyond the handouts and to keep reading in DP2 while every other subject is also asking for coursework.

The level decision is usually made under time pressure and with bad information. Students choose HL because they liked the first six weeks, which tests interest rather than stamina. A more useful test takes twenty minutes: give the student a dense page of argument, unseen, and ask them to summarise the position, state the strongest objection and say which they find more convincing. A student who enjoys that exercise, even while finding it hard, will survive HL. A student who resents it will spend two years resenting it. A Philosophy IB Diploma Programme (DP), Years 1-2 tutor Mumbai families bring in during DP1 can run that test in a single session.

There is a change window in DP1, and it is narrower than most parents assume. Schools set their own deadline for subject and level changes, and it is normally early in the first year, partly because internal assessment work and taught content start accumulating quickly. Ask the DP coordinator for the dated deadline in writing rather than relying on a general sense that changes are possible for a while. Once it closes, the realistic options narrow to managing the subject rather than leaving it.

Work already begun does not simply transfer. A student moving from Philosophy to another Group 3 subject keeps the general skills, essay structure, handling of abstract claims, reading dense text, and loses the subject-specific progress: the prescribed text, the optional themes, any internal assessment (IA) thinking already done. Moving from HL to SL within Philosophy is usually gentler, because the content overlaps substantially even though the assessment load differs. A student moving the other way, up to HL mid-year, has reading to catch up on and should be honest about whether there is room for it alongside Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and an Extended Essay (EE).

  • HL adds assessed work and sustained reading through DP2
  • Test stamina with an unseen page of argument, not with interest
  • Ask the DP coordinator for the dated change deadline in writing
  • A subject change loses text, themes and IA progress, not core skills
  • HL to SL within Philosophy is a gentler move than SL to HL

What Philosophy asks you to read and write, and how home sessions handle it

The load students misjudge is not the difficulty of the ideas. It is the volume and the kind of reading. Philosophy is assessed through written papers and an internally assessed piece of work, covering a core theme, the optional themes a school chooses, a prescribed philosophical text, and, at Higher Level, a further component on philosophical activity itself. The internal assessment asks a student to take a non-philosophical stimulus and draw a genuine philosophical issue out of it. The names of the components are stable enough to plan around; their structure, weighting and requirements change across guide cycles, so confirm them with your school and the current subject guide rather than with any summary you read online.

Reading a page of philosophy is slower than reading a page of history, and students do not budget for it. Twenty pages of a set text can take longer than a chapter of a Business Management textbook, because the text has to be reread, annotated and argued with rather than absorbed. Students who read at speed by habit, as strong readers do, often read philosophy badly at first: they finish the page and cannot say what was being claimed. Home tuition sessions deal with this directly by reading slowly together, out loud where necessary, stopping at every claim to ask what it rules out. A home tutor who lets a student read at their usual pace has skipped the first repair the subject needs.

The writing load is steadier than it is heavy, and it is the steadiness that catches people. There is no single enormous deadline in Philosophy of the kind a science IA produces. There is a continuous expectation of essays and practice answers across two years, each one requiring a plan and a redraft to be worth anything. A student who writes only what is set and never redrafts will be competent in DP1 and stuck in DP2. An IB home tutor in Mumbai working weekly keeps a redraft in play at all times: one paragraph rewritten each week is worth more than a complete essay produced every month.

Note-taking is the quiet skill that separates the two years. Classroom notes in Philosophy that record what the teacher said are almost useless at revision, because the words are the argument and a paraphrase loses it. Notes that record the position, the argument for it, the objection and the reply are revision-ready two years later. Teaching that format takes about three sessions and saves a student from rebuilding their entire understanding in the final term, which is what most of the panic in a DP2 revision schedule actually consists of.

  • Philosophy reading is slower per page than history or business
  • Strong fast readers often read philosophy badly at first
  • Continuous essay expectation, no single large deadline
  • One paragraph redrafted weekly beats one essay monthly
  • Notes should record position, argument, objection and reply

Which Mumbai neighbourhoods have Philosophy tutors available?

Philosophy tutors are thinner on the ground than Mathematics tutors in every zone of Mumbai, so availability, rather than preference, often decides the match. Coverage runs across South Mumbai, the Western Suburbs, the Central Suburbs, the Eastern Suburbs, Navi Mumbai and Thane, and IB DP Philosophy private tuition in Mumbai is matched on sustainable weekly travel in each of them. A search for IB tutors near me Mumbai returns plenty of names for the large subjects and very few for this one, which is why we would rather offer you a tutor fifteen minutes further away who will still be coming in February.

The Western Suburbs carry the largest share of Philosophy demand in the city, and the geography is forgiving if you respect it. The zone runs north to south along the Western Line and the Western Express Highway, so matching along the line works and matching across it does not: Khar to Santacruz, Juhu to Bandra West, Andheri West to Oshiwara, Malad to Kandivali to Borivali. Metro Lines 2A and 7 have made the Dahisar to Gundavali run viable for tutors who previously would not take a cross-suburb slot, and Link Road absorbs what the highway cannot. A tutor based in Bandra West can reach Andheri West comfortably off-peak and will struggle at 6pm, which is why the slot time matters more than the distance.

Thane is the other zone worth setting out properly, because it is routinely treated as one place and behaves like three. The city spreads west to east from Thane station across Pokhran Road and Majiwada out to Ghodbunder Road and Kasarvadavali, and the Ghodbunder stretch sets the schedule on its own: twenty minutes off-peak from the station, close to an hour in the evening peak. Families in Hiranandani Estate and Kasarvadavali are best served by tutors who already live along that road rather than by anyone crossing from the station side at seven in the evening. The Central Line towards Kalyan and the Trans-Harbour Line to Vashi bring in tutors from further out for weekend slots, and Mulund-based tutors cross over for a single session rather than for a midweek pair.

The rest of the city rounds out the coverage. South Mumbai is short in distance and slow in practice, with Worli, Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Walkeshwar and Tardeo matched inside the island using the Western Line to Churchgate and Mumbai Central, the Harbour Line towards Sewri, Metro Line 3 from Cuffe Parade towards BKC, and the Coastal Road and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link for the northern end. The Central Suburbs hold Powai, Chandivali, Ghatkopar, Kurla and Mulund, with Powai reached by road along JVLR and the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) doing the cross-city work. The Eastern Suburbs run from Chembur and Govandi through Vikhroli and Bhandup, with the Eastern Freeway and the Eastern Express Highway deciding what is possible. Navi Mumbai, here in Mumbai, Maharashtra, is matched node to node across Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar and Panvel along Palm Beach Road and the Sion-Panvel Highway, with the Atal Setu useful for airport-side journeys rather than for weekday tuition.

  • Philosophy tutor supply is thinner than for large subjects everywhere
  • Western Suburbs: match along the line, Khar to Santacruz to Borivali
  • Thane behaves as three zones; Ghodbunder Road sets the slot time
  • South Mumbai matched inside the island: Worli, Colaba, Walkeshwar
  • Navi Mumbai matched node to node: Vashi, Nerul, Kharghar, Panvel
  • A slightly further tutor who lasts beats a near one who cancels

What Mumbai schools tell you at the options evening, and what they cannot

Not every IB school in Mumbai offers Philosophy, and the ones that do may offer it only at one level or only if enough students choose it. Families at Ecole Mondiale World School and Jamnabai Narsee International School in Juhu, Utpal Shanghvi Global School, Oberoi International School off JVLR, JBCN International School in Borivali, Singapore International School in Dahisar East and Thakur International School in Kandivali East are each working with a different Group 3 menu. The first question at an options evening should therefore be whether the subject will actually run, at which level, and what the school does if numbers fall short.

Options evenings are good at describing content and poor at describing load. A teacher with twenty minutes and a slide deck will tell you what Philosophy covers and why it is interesting, both of which are true. What rarely gets said is how much slower the reading is, how continuous the writing expectation is, or which kind of student finds the subject frustrating. That is not evasion; it is the format. So ask the specific question instead: of last year's cohort, what did the students who struggled have in common? Teachers usually answer that one straight.

Calendars matter for a different reason here. Mumbai's IB schools start the academic year in April or in August, and the May examination session is the common endpoint for most DP2 cohorts. Schools in Thane such as Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania School, and NES International School in Mulund West, set their own internal deadlines, so the only calendar worth planning from is the dated one your own school publishes. The subject-change deadline in DP1 lives on that calendar too, usually earlier than families expect, and it is the single date that makes this whole page actionable.

IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with any school named here, nor with the International Baccalaureate organisation. Schools appear because their subject menus and calendars are the real context for a Mumbai family's decision. We cannot tell you whether a particular school will run Philosophy at Higher Level next year, and a tutor who claims to know how a specific school's teachers mark is making a claim you should treat cautiously rather than as an advantage.

  • Confirm the subject will run, at which level, and the minimum numbers
  • Options evenings describe content well and workload poorly
  • Ask what last year's struggling students had in common
  • The DP1 change deadline sits on your school's dated calendar
  • IB Gram is independent and not affiliated with any school named

Home tuition, online or hybrid for IB DP Philosophy private tuition in Mumbai?

Home tuition leads for this request because a subject-fit conversation needs a room, not a window. IB DP Philosophy home tuition in Mumbai lets a tutor watch a student think: the hesitation before committing to a position, the reach for a phone when a question gets uncomfortable, the moment a student starts defending an opinion rather than examining it. Those are the signals that tell a tutor whether this student will enjoy two years of the subject or endure them. Parents also get something from the home tuition format that a screen does not provide, which is the chance to overhear ten minutes of it.

The trade-off is supply and scheduling. Philosophy home classes Mumbai families want on a Tuesday evening may not exist in their immediate area, and insisting on home-only can mean waiting. Travel is the other cost: a tutor crossing the Western Express Highway or the Ghodbunder Road queue at 6pm arrives tired, and a tutor who arrives twenty minutes late to a ninety-minute session has lost a meaningful part of it. We would rather set the slot at 7:30pm and have it survive the term.

Online tuition widens the pool immediately and is the pragmatic answer for a scarce subject. An IB online tutor in Mumbai can work with a student in Panvel, Dahisar or Kasarvadavali with no travel at all, can hold a 7am slot before school, and can share annotated text on screen. What it loses for this particular intent is the fit diagnosis: it is harder to read a student's discomfort through a camera, and students perform confidence online more easily than they do across a table. For reading discussion and note-taking practice, online is genuinely equivalent.

Hybrid is where most families land, and for a subject-choice question the split is specific. One home session a week while the decision is still open, because that is where the honest conversation happens and where writing gets watched rather than reported. One shorter online session for reading and discussion once the choice is settled. Through the monsoon the online half keeps the arrangement intact when a flooded junction on the Eastern Express Highway makes the home slot impossible, rather than the week simply disappearing.

  • Home classes reveal fit: hesitation, defensiveness, how a student thinks
  • Scarce subject plus home-only requirement often means waiting
  • Online removes travel and suits reading discussion equally well
  • Students perform confidence more easily on camera than in a room
  • Hybrid: home while deciding, online for reading once settled

How is a private Philosophy tutor in Mumbai checked?

Three checks happen before a family sees a profile: government photo identity, the degree claimed, and the Philosophy teaching actually done at Diploma Programme level. The third filter removes more applicants than the first two combined. Philosophy attracts graduates who have studied the subject seriously and have never taught it to an assessment framework, and for a family deciding whether their child should continue with the subject, that gap matters. An IB DP Philosophy private tutor in Mumbai who cannot describe what separates a middling essay from a strong one cannot give you a fit opinion worth acting on.

Because this page is about subject choice, we add one check the other Philosophy pages do not need. We ask each tutor to describe a student they advised to drop the subject, and why. A tutor who has never advised anyone to leave Philosophy has either taught very few students or is not giving honest advice. The answers we keep are specific: a student who wanted to win arguments rather than examine them, a student whose reading speed made HL unmanageable alongside two other essay subjects, a student who was better suited to a subject with more structure.

What a parent should check themselves takes one conversation. Ask the tutor directly whether they think your child should be taking this subject, and watch whether they answer or deflect. Ask what evidence they are basing it on. Ask what would change their mind. Then ask your child, privately, whether the tutor disagreed with them about anything in the session. A Philosophy tutor who produced no disagreement in ninety minutes was not teaching Philosophy.

Be wary of a tutor who offers a guaranteed grade, who claims to know a school's internal marking, or who tells you what a university will require. Nobody on this platform is in a position to state an institution's entry requirements, and anyone who does is guessing with your child's subject choice. Families looking for the best IB tutor in Mumbai often read certainty as competence. Certainty about things that are genuinely uncertain is the opposite signal.

  • Identity, degree and DP-level Philosophy teaching all verified
  • Tutors must describe a student they advised to drop the subject
  • Ask the tutor outright whether your child should take Philosophy
  • Ask your child whether the tutor disagreed with them once
  • No tutor here states any university's entry requirements

Who should take IB Philosophy, and who regrets it?

The student who most often regrets Philosophy is the one who enjoys debating. That sounds wrong, so it is worth being precise. Debating rewards winning: holding a position, defending it under pressure, finding the weakness in an opponent. Philosophy assessment rewards something close to the opposite, which is representing the strongest version of the view you disagree with and then answering it fairly. A student who has learned to argue competitively will write answers that are forceful and thin, and will be marked down for exactly the quality that made them good at debating. This is fixable, and it takes months rather than weeks, because the habit is deep and it has been rewarded elsewhere. It is also the single most common reason a family books weekly home tuition for this subject in the first place.

The second group who struggle are students whose first-language writing is strong. They have never been told their writing was unclear, because it never was. Philosophy asks for a different kind of clarity: not fluency but precision, where every term is used in one sense and every claim rules something out. A sentence that reads well and means three slightly different things is a problem in a Philosophy essay and nowhere else in the diploma. These students usually improve fast once they see it, because the underlying writing ability is already there. The session that does it is a brutal one: the tutor takes a paragraph the student is proud of and asks, of each sentence, what exactly it denies.

Who does well? Students who are comfortable not resolving a question. Students who read slowly by inclination. Students who ask what a word means in the middle of a discussion rather than after it. Quiet students are strongly represented, which surprises parents who expect the subject to belong to the talkers. Also students who want a subject where the work is thinking rather than remembering, because Philosophy has relatively little to memorise and relatively little to hide behind.

Against the other Group 3 options, the comparison is about the kind of work rather than difficulty. Psychology has more content to learn, more research methodology and more structure to its answers, which suits a student who likes knowing what a good answer looks like. Global Politics works with current cases and demands engagement with real-world evidence, which suits a student who follows news and likes concrete material. Literature overlaps most with Philosophy in its writing demands, but the object of study is a text's meaning rather than an argument's validity, and a student can succeed in Literature with sensitivity where Philosophy requires rigour. A student choosing between Philosophy and Literature should look at which of those two words describes them.

Three honest warnings. Philosophy is a poor choice as a subject to coast in: there is no content to learn that produces marks on its own. It is a poor choice for a student already carrying two other essay subjects and a heavy Extended Essay, unless they genuinely read fast. And it is a poor choice chosen for how it looks on an application, which brings us to the question every parent in Mumbai asks within the first ten minutes.

  • Competitive debaters write forceful, thin answers and get marked down
  • Fluent first-language writers often lack the precision required
  • Students comfortable leaving a question unresolved tend to do well
  • Psychology offers more structure; Global Politics more concrete evidence
  • Literature rewards sensitivity, Philosophy rewards rigour
  • A poor choice alongside two other essay subjects and a heavy EE

Do universities value IB DP Philosophy, and what progress should a Mumbai family expect?

The honest answer is that it varies by institution, by country and above all by course, and that it has to be checked at source. Some degree courses list specific required subjects and others list none, some treat any rigorous essay-based humanities subject as suitable preparation, and some published requirements change from one admissions cycle to the next. We will not tell you what any named university or course requires, because we are not in a position to know it and a wrong answer here costs a student a place. Read the requirement on the university's own published course page for the year your child will apply, and ask the school's university counsellor to confirm it.

What can be said generally is about skills rather than about admissions. Philosophy produces a student who can read a dense argument, state a position precisely, anticipate an objection and answer it. Those are the skills that essay-based degrees assess in their first year, and students who arrive with them often find the transition easier. That is a different claim from saying a particular course prefers the subject, and the two get conflated constantly in conversations at Mumbai options evenings. Keep them separate when you make the decision.

On tutoring progress, the realistic milestones are these. At four weeks, expect a clear fit opinion and changed writing habits: a plan before an essay, a defined use of key terms, an objection appearing without prompting. At one term, expect the marked work to show it, with answers that engage the opposing view rather than dismissing it. At one examination cycle, including mocks, outcomes genuinely vary, and we do not guarantee grades. A student held back only by technique often moves; a student who was mismatched with the subject from the start usually improves by less, which is precisely why the fit conversation belongs in week one.

If the tutor is not right, tell us and we arrange a replacement, with the session notes and marked work passed across so the student does not start again. For this intent there is a second kind of not working out that is worth naming: the tutoring is fine and the subject is wrong. In that case the useful action is a conversation with the DP coordinator about the change window, not a different tutor, and we will say so rather than keeping the engagement going.

  • University requirements vary by institution and course; check at source
  • Ask the school's university counsellor to confirm what you read
  • Skills claims and admissions claims are not the same thing
  • Four weeks: a fit opinion and changed writing habits
  • We do not guarantee grades; outcomes over a cycle vary
  • Sometimes the right fix is a subject change, not a new tutor

Starting Philosophy home tuition in Mumbai while the subject choice is still open

Bring three things to the first session and it will be worth the fee even if you never book a second. A piece of the student's own writing that handles an abstract idea. The school's dated subject-change deadline for DP1. And a straight account from the student, not the parent, of what they expected the subject to be. That last one is usually where the misjudgement is visible: the student who says they thought it would be about having views has already told the tutor what the first month has to undo.

The session runs in three parts. A short diagnostic writing task, marked and talked through. A twenty-minute reading exercise on an unseen page of argument, which is the closest honest test of whether Higher Level is realistic. Then a conversation with the parent about fit, load and the change window, with a clear opinion rather than a menu of options. A home tutor for Philosophy Mumbai families bring in at this point should be willing to put that opinion in writing.

After that, IB home tuition in Mumbai for this subject settles into a weekly rhythm: a redraft in play at all times, slow reading together, and note-taking in a format that will still make sense in DP2. An IB tutor Mumbai parents keep for two years is usually one who set that rhythm in the first month and then changed very little about it.

Send us the level under consideration, how far into DP1 the student is, your area and two or three weekly slots that work on a school night. We come back with tutor options who can hold that slot through a Mumbai monsoon and an examination term, and you decide after a paid trial at home.

  • Bring a sample of abstract writing and the change deadline
  • Ask the student, not the parent, what they expected the subject to be
  • Session includes an unseen reading test for Higher Level realism
  • Expect a written fit opinion, not a menu of options
  • Weekly rhythm: a redraft in play, slow reading, revision-ready notes
FAQs

Mumbai tutoring — questions parents ask

My son loves debating. Does that mean Philosophy is a good fit?+

Not by itself, and often it points the other way. Debating trains a student to win a position; Philosophy assessment credits representing the opposing view at its strongest and then answering it fairly. Competitive debaters tend to write answers that are forceful and thin, and they lose marks for precisely the quality that made them effective on a debate stage. The habit can be retrained, and it takes months rather than weeks because it has been rewarded everywhere else. A good first session will test for this deliberately by asking the student to argue against their own view.

Is Philosophy harder than Psychology or Global Politics in the Diploma Programme?+

It is not harder so much as differently shaped, and the right question is which shape suits your child. Psychology carries more content and more methodology, with clearer templates for what a strong answer looks like, which suits a student who likes knowing the target. Global Politics works with real cases and current evidence, which suits a student who follows news closely. Philosophy has the least to memorise and the least to hide behind: marks come from the quality of reasoning on the page. A student who dislikes open questions will find Philosophy harder than either.

Can a private tutor come to our home in Andheri West on a weekday evening?+

Usually yes, and Andheri West is one of the better-supplied areas in the city for this subject. Tutors based in Andheri West, Oshiwara, Juhu, Santacruz or Bandra West can hold a weekday evening slot without crossing the Western Express Highway at its worst, and Metro Line 1 helps for tutors coming from the Ghatkopar side. What we check is the return journey as much as the arrival. If your preferred time is 6pm, give us 7:30pm as an alternative too, because the later slot often produces a home tuition match that survives the full term.

How much reading does IB Philosophy actually involve each week?+

Less volume than Literature and slower going per page than almost anything else in the diploma. A set text has to be reread, annotated and argued with rather than read once, so twenty pages can take longer than a full textbook chapter. Higher Level expects reading beyond the handouts and expects it to continue through DP2 while coursework is also due. Students who read quickly by habit often read philosophy badly at first and need to be taught to slow down. Home sessions typically spend part of each week reading together, out loud where it helps.

My daughter writes fluently but her teacher says she is imprecise. Can tuition fix that?+

Yes, and this is one of the fastest improvements in the subject. Fluent writers have never been told their prose is unclear, because it is not; Philosophy asks for a different quality, where each term is used in one sense and each claim rules something out. The repair session is simple and uncomfortable: the tutor takes a paragraph the student is pleased with and asks, sentence by sentence, what exactly it denies. Students with strong underlying writing usually change within a few weeks, because the ability is already present and only the standard has moved.

Can we still change subjects in DP1, and what happens to the work already done?+

That depends entirely on your school's dated deadline, which the Diploma Programme coordinator can give you in writing, and it is normally earlier in DP1 than parents expect. On the work itself: general skills transfer, including essay structure, handling abstract claims and reading dense text. Subject-specific progress does not, so the prescribed text, the optional themes and any internal assessment thinking are lost. Moving from Higher Level to Standard Level within Philosophy is a gentler change because the content overlaps. Moving up to Higher Level mid-year means catching up on reading while everything else continues.

Do universities care which Group 3 subject my child takes?+

It varies by institution, by country and most of all by course, and it has to be checked on the university's own published requirements for the year your child applies. Some courses specify required subjects, some specify none, and some treat any rigorous essay-based humanities subject as suitable preparation. We will not tell you what any named university expects, because we are not in a position to know and an error here is expensive. Ask your school's university counsellor to confirm what you find, and choose the subject on fit rather than on a guess about admissions.

Should we choose Higher Level or Standard Level Philosophy?+

Decide it on reading stamina rather than on interest, because interest is what the first six weeks test and stamina is what two years require. A twenty-minute exercise settles it: give the student an unseen, dense page of argument and ask them to summarise the position, state the strongest objection and say which they find more convincing. A student who finds that hard and enjoys it will manage Higher Level. A student who finds it hard and resents it will not, and will be carrying that resentment through DP2 alongside everything else.

What do private tuition fees depend on for a scarce subject in Mumbai?+

IB tuition fees in Mumbai depend on level, subject scarcity, session length, travel distance and how much marking happens outside the session. Philosophy sits at the scarce end, with far fewer tutors who have taught it to a Diploma Programme assessment framework than for Mathematics or Economics, and scarcity shows in the rate. Sessions that require a tutor to cross a zone on a weekday evening cost more than sessions within their own area, and ninety-minute sessions cost more than an hour. We quote after the intake conversation rather than publishing a list, because all five factors move together.

Will a tutor travel to Thane across Ghodbunder Road for a Saturday morning slot?+

A weekend morning is the easiest slot to staff in Thane, so yes in most cases. Ghodbunder Road is roughly a twenty-minute run from the station side to Kasarvadavali off-peak and close to an hour in the weekday evening peak, which is why Saturday mornings work when Tuesday evenings do not. Families in Hiranandani Estate and Kasarvadavali get the most reliable match from tutors already living along that road. Tutors from Mulund do cross over, and that arrangement holds better as a single weekend session than as a midweek pair.

Does home tuition work if both parents are out at work in the evening?+

It works, with two conditions. Someone over eighteen should be at home, which for most families means a grandparent or staff member who can let the tutor in and be present in the flat. And the session notes have to go to the parent in writing, because a parent who was not there cannot pick up what was covered from a passing comment at dinner. Many families in this position prefer weekend home classes plus a weekday online session, which keeps the supervision simple and still gives the tutor one session across a table.

What if the tutor and my child simply do not get along?+

Say so and we arrange a replacement, with notes and marked work passed to the new tutor so nothing restarts. One caution specific to Philosophy: a student reporting that the tutor keeps disagreeing with them is usually describing the subject working rather than a mismatch. Ask what the disagreement was about. If the tutor was pressing on the argument, that is the job. If the student feels talked over or belittled, that is a genuine mismatch and worth changing quickly, because a student who stops speaking in a Philosophy session gains nothing from it.

Send us the level you are considering, how far into DP1 your child is, your area in Mumbai and two or three weekly slots that work on a school night. We come back with tutor options who have taught Philosophy to an examination session and will give you an honest opinion on fit. You take a paid trial at home, where a short diagnostic task and an unseen reading exercise show whether the subject and the level are right, and then you decide what to do with the change window.
