IB DP Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL Home Tuition in Mumbai

IB DP Math AA HL home tuition in Mumbai is, for most families who ask for it, a technique problem rather than a knowledge problem. This page is about the written papers: the one sat without a calculator, the one that allows it, and the long questions where marks quietly go missing. Home tutors travel across Mumbai, Maharashtra, and online slots exist for the weeks travel does not.

How IB Gram shortlists an HL Analysis home tutor in Mumbai

A request for IB DP Math AA HL home tuition in Mumbai almost always arrives with the same sentence attached: he understands it in class and then loses marks. That sentence is more useful to us than a list of weak topics, because it says the gap sits between knowing a method and producing it on paper against a clock. So the first thing we ask for is not a syllabus audit. It is one recently marked script, photographed page by page with the teacher's pen still on it, sent together with the question paper it came from.

Someone reads that script before a single tutor is suggested, because what a script shows is rarely what a student reports. A Higher Level paper will show whether the candidate wrote one promising line on the long question and then stopped. It will show whether an exact value was quietly turned into a decimal on the paper that forbids decimals. It will show an integral set up correctly and then spoiled by a missing constant, notation drifting between f'(x) and dy/dx inside the same question, or three blank parts at the end that are a timing problem and not a content problem. Each of those is a different brief for a different tutor.

Only then do we look at people. The filter is deliberately narrow. The tutor has to have taught Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level rather than general engineering mathematics. The tutor has to be willing to mark to a published scheme instead of demonstrating a clean solution on a fresh sheet, which is a genuinely different skill and not everyone enjoys it. And the tutor has to reach your building at a time that survives a whole term, not just the first fortnight. A tutor who can only come at 4pm is no use to a student whose school bus reaches Powai at twenty to five.

Two or three profiles come back with the travel assumption written down plainly: who travels, from where, on which line or road, and what the plan is when the road fails. You then run one trial session built entirely around the script you sent, so you can see the marking happen rather than hear it described. If the match is wrong, say so inside the first week and we change it. Nobody benefits from a polite term in which very little happens.

  • 1. Photograph one recently marked Higher Level script and send it with the question paper.
  • 2. Tell us the school, the Diploma Programme year, your locality and the free evenings.
  • 3. We shortlist tutors who can mark that paper, not only solve it.
  • 4. Run one trial session built around the questions that went wrong.
  • 5. Keep the tutor, change the tutor, or switch to online inside the first week.

Where Higher Level Analysis and Approaches sits in the Diploma Programme

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) runs two mathematics courses and every candidate takes exactly one of them. Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches is the algebraic route, built around proof, calculus and exact work. Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation is the modelling, technology and statistics route. Each exists at Higher Level (HL) and at Standard Level (SL), which produces four distinct courses that conversation at a parents' evening tends to flatten into the single phrase IB Maths. They are not interchangeable. A tutor who has taught one of them has not necessarily taught yours, and families arranging IB home tuition in Mumbai should name the course and the level in the first message they send. Parents often end up typing the entire thing into a search box, Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches IB DP Higher Level (HL) tutor Mumbai, which is unwieldy but at least leaves nothing ambiguous.

At Higher Level, Analysis and Approaches is assessed through written papers and the exploration, which is the internal assessment (IA). One written paper is sat without a graphic display calculator. A second allows one. Higher Level candidates also sit a further paper made of extended response questions, longer problems in unfamiliar settings that are built up in stages rather than asked in one line. The exploration is an independent piece of mathematical writing marked against published criteria. How long each paper runs, what each component is worth and how the criteria are weighted are all set out in the subject guide for your examination session, and your teacher can tell you which version applies to your cohort. Take those numbers from the guide, not from a forum thread or an older sibling's memory.

This page is about the written papers and almost nothing else. The exploration has a page of its own, because the help a student needs there is editorial and structural rather than mathematical. Choosing between Higher Level and Standard Level, or between Analysis and Applications, also has its own page, because that is a decision with a deadline attached rather than a skill to be practised. If your real question is whether she should be on this course at all, read that one. If your question is that she is on it, the understanding is there, and the marks are not matching it, this is the page you want.

  • Two courses, two levels: Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, HL or SL
  • Higher Level Analysis adds content depth and a third written paper
  • One paper bans the calculator; one permits it; the extended paper is HL only
  • Paper lengths and component weightings live in the current subject guide, not here
  • The exploration and the level decision are covered on separate pages

What does the no-calculator paper really test?

The no-calculator paper in Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level tests whether a student can produce exact values and carry algebra without a screen. Surds stay as surds. Logarithms stay in log form. Exact trigonometric values are recalled rather than read off a display, and radians are handled without ever becoming decimals. There is no numerical escape route, which is precisely the point.

That has consequences a student feels immediately. Rationalising a denominator has to be automatic rather than reconstructed. Partial fractions have to be split before an integral is even recognisable. A substitution has to be spotted by eye, because there is nothing to try it on. Binomial expansions, logarithm laws, the factor and remainder theorems, complex numbers in Cartesian and polar form, De Moivre's theorem, proof by induction and proof by contradiction, vector equations of lines and planes, implicit differentiation and related rates all have to be executed cleanly in pen. A student who has spent two years typing expressions into a handheld has never had to hold a three-line manipulation in working memory, and it shows in the first mock. This is the single most common reason a Mumbai family goes looking for Higher Level help in the December before examinations.

The paper that allows a graphic display calculator fails students in the opposite way. The instinct becomes graph first, think later. A question that says show that, or hence find, or find the exact value, is asking for algebra and will not accept a screenshot of an intersection. Students lose accuracy marks by rounding in the middle of a calculation instead of storing the value and rounding once at the end. They solve an equation numerically and write only the answer, so when a sign slips there is nothing on the page a marker can reward. The calculator is a tool for the part of the question you have already set up, not a substitute for setting it up.

Timing behaves differently on the two papers as well. On the calculator paper the pressure is arithmetic and the temptation is to overrun on a question that is nearly finished. On the non-calculator paper the pressure is confidence: a student who cannot see the route in twenty seconds stalls, and a stalled student in paragraph one of a long question loses every mark that follows. Technique work on these two papers is not the same exercise, and a tutor who runs them as one revision block is wasting half your evenings.

  • Exact values, surds, radians and log form practised until they are automatic
  • Substitution and partial fractions recognised by eye rather than trial and error
  • On the calculator paper, store values and round once at the end
  • Show that and hence always mean algebra, never a screenshot
  • Stalling for twenty seconds on part (a) costs every mark in parts (b) and (c)

Where in Mumbai HL Analysis home tuition actually runs

IB DP Math AA HL home tuition in Mumbai is arranged zone by zone, because the city does not behave like one travel market. In South Mumbai the distances are short and the clock is still cruel: a tutor crossing from Worli to Colaba or Cuffe Parade covers a handful of kilometres and can lose forty minutes at the Peddar Road and Haji Ali signals, so we match inside the island rather than pulling someone down the Western Line. Fort, Babulnath, Walkeshwar, Tardeo and Breach Candy are served from within, with the Coastal Road and Metro Line 3 slowly changing what a 7pm slot costs in travel time.

The Western Suburbs run north to south along the Western Express Highway, the Western Line and Link Road, so matching along the line works and matching across it does not. Bandra to Khar West to Santacruz is a sensible tutor radius; Juhu, Andheri West and Versova form another; Goregaon, Malad, Kandivali, Borivali and Dahisar form a third, now stitched together by Metro Lines 2A and 7 and connected eastwards by Metro Line 1 from Versova through Andheri to Ghatkopar. A parent typing IB tutors near me Mumbai in Kandivali and being offered someone from Chembur has been given a match that will not survive the monsoon.

The Central Suburbs hang off the Central Line and the Eastern Express Highway, with Powai and Chandivali sitting on JVLR in between. Powai is the exception worth planning around: it is central on a map and has no station of its own, so tutors arrive by road from Andheri East, Kanjurmarg or Ghatkopar, and a 6pm start on JVLR is a different promise from a 6pm start in Kurla. The Eastern Suburbs stretch from Wadala and Chembur through Govandi, Vikhroli and Bhandup to Mulund, with the Harbour Line, the Monorail and above all the Eastern Freeway making South Mumbai far closer to Chembur than the map suggests.

Navi Mumbai works in nodes, and so does matching there. Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar and Panvel are each a short drive from the next along Palm Beach Road and the Sion to Panvel Highway, with the Harbour Line, the Trans-Harbour Line and Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 from Belapur to Pendhar carrying the rest. The Atal Setu has changed weekend logistics across the creek, but an IB home tutor in Mumbai who crosses it twice a week for an evening lesson rarely keeps that up for a full term, so we match node to node. Thane spreads from the station east along Pokhran Road and Ghodbunder Road through Majiwada to Hiranandani Estate and Kasarvadavali, and Ghodbunder Road sets every schedule in that zone: twenty minutes off-peak, close to an hour at seven in the evening.

  • South Mumbai matched within the island: Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Worli, Peddar Road, Tardeo
  • Western Suburbs matched along the line, not across it, from Bandra to Dahisar
  • Powai and Chandivali reached by road off JVLR, never by train
  • Navi Mumbai matched node to node: Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar, Panvel
  • Thane slots set by Ghodbunder Road, not by distance on a map

How the Mumbai school calendar sets the technique clock

Mumbai runs its international schools on a June start and a March or April finish, with the May examination session at the end of the second Diploma Programme year. That shape decides when technique work is useful and when it is too late to be useful. Families at Dhirubhai Ambani International School and the American School of Bombay in the Bandra Kurla Complex, at Ascend International School, at Ecole Mondiale World School and Jamnabai Narsee International School in Juhu, at Oberoi International School on JVLR, at B.D. Somani International School in Cuffe Parade, at Cathedral and John Connon School in Fort, at Bombay International School at Babulnath, at Aditya Birla World Academy in Tardeo, at Hiranandani Foundation School in Powai, at NES International School in Mulund West, at the JBCN International School campuses in Parel, Borivali, Oshiwara and Chembur, at Thakur International School in Kandivali East, at Singapore International School in Dahisar East and at D.Y. Patil International School in Nerul are all working to broadly the same rhythm even though the detail of each school's internal deadlines differs.

The pressure points repeat every year. The monsoon from June into September eats weekday evenings and is the worst possible period to be starting from scratch with a new tutor and an unfamiliar route. Diwali breaks the term in half and is the last comfortable window for a Diploma Programme first-year student to repair algebra that is not secure. The December to February stretch carries school mock examinations, and this is where the no-calculator paper usually does its damage in public for the first time. February and March bring study leave, by which point a tutor can sharpen technique but cannot rebuild a topic from nothing.

This matters because the help a Higher Level Analysis student needs is different in each window. In the monsoon, the work is content and habit. Before mocks, the work is timed papers under real conditions with a tutor sitting there watching how long part (a) takes. After mocks, the work is forensic: this is the script, these are the fourteen marks that were available and not taken, here is what each one needed. Starting in February and asking for the whole syllabus is not a plan.

IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform. We are not affiliated with any of the schools named above, nor with the International Baccalaureate organisation, and naming a school here only tells you that families in that community use this kind of help. Any tutor who suggests they have inside knowledge of a particular school's internal marking should be treated with suspicion.

  • June to September monsoon: build content and habits, not exam sprints
  • Diwali: the last comfortable window to repair shaky algebra in DP1
  • December to February mocks: timed papers with someone watching the clock
  • Post-mock: forensic marking of the student's own script, mark by mark
  • We are an independent platform with no affiliation to any school named

Home, online or hybrid for HL Analysis in Mumbai?

Home tutoring is the default here and it earns that position on this particular subject. Higher Level Analysis is worked with a pen on paper, and a tutor sitting at the same table can see the moment a student hesitates, which line they rewrite, which bracket they lose and which page they turn over without finishing. IB DP Math AA HL home tutoring in Mumbai also solves a problem that online cannot: a student will show a messy, half-abandoned page to someone sitting beside them far more readily than they will hold it up to a camera. Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches home classes Mumbai parents arrange are usually booked as a standing weekly slot, which matters more than the length of any single session.

Online is not a lesser option, it is a different one with honest trade-offs. An IB online tutor in Mumbai can take a 9pm slot after a late school activity, can work through a Sunday morning when the Western Express Highway is closed for an event, and gives you access to a Higher Level specialist who does not live within reach of your building. The costs are real too. Screen-shared working is slower than two people writing on one sheet. A document camera or a tablet with a stylus fixes most of it, and a plain phone propped against a book fixes none of it. Marking a script works well online once the student has scanned it properly; live diagnosis of a student who freezes is harder.

Hybrid is what most Higher Level families settle into by the second term, and it is worth planning deliberately rather than drifting into. One home session a week for the paper work and the marking, one shorter online session for question-setting, doubt clearing and checking that the week's practice actually happened. During the monsoon the balance tilts online without anybody losing a week. In February the balance tilts back, because timed papers under supervision need a person in the room.

Whatever the mix, insist on one thing: the student writes. A session in which the tutor demonstrates beautifully for ninety minutes and the student copies is comfortable, popular and nearly useless on this course. The student should be producing full solutions under something close to exam conditions while the tutor watches, and the demonstration should come after the attempt, not before it.

  • Home sessions first: pen on paper, visible hesitation, nothing hidden from a camera
  • Online for late evenings, monsoon weeks and scarce Higher Level specialists
  • A tablet and stylus or document camera, not a phone balanced on a book
  • Hybrid by term two: home for papers, online for doubts and question-setting
  • In every mode, the student writes first and the tutor demonstrates afterwards

How tutors are checked, and what you should check yourself

Verification on our side covers the checkable facts. Identity is confirmed against photo identification. Qualifications are confirmed against the actual certificate rather than a claim in a profile. Teaching history is described in terms of boards, courses and levels taught, so that Higher Level Analysis and Approaches appears as its own line and is not hidden inside the phrase IB Maths. Tutors agree in writing to the conduct expectations that apply to working in a family home, and anyone who will not provide documents does not get listed. We also record what a tutor will not do, which is more useful than it sounds: a tutor who says plainly that they do not take on the exploration is being honest, not limited.

What we cannot verify from here is the only thing that will decide whether this works, which is whether this particular adult can teach your particular child. So the first session is a test and you should treat it as one. Ask any Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches tutor in Mumbai to mark one page of your child's working in front of you, out loud, with the markscheme open. A specialist will talk about where the method mark was earned and lost. A generalist will quietly start writing out their own solution instead, which is the clearest signal you will get in the first hour.

There are things worth checking yourself that have nothing to do with mathematics. Confirm who is actually coming each week, because an agency that sends a different person in month two has sold you a brand rather than a tutor. Agree the arrival window honestly: an IB private tutor Mumbai families hire from across a zone boundary will be late in July, and a tutor who says 6.30 and means 6.50 should say 6.50. Confirm what happens to a missed session before you need the answer. And ask what the tutor expects the student to do between sessions, because a Higher Level course cannot be carried by two hours a week of supervised work alone.

Finally, watch for the sales tells. Be wary of anyone who promises a specific grade, anyone who claims unusual insight into what will be on the paper, and anyone who wants a long term paid in advance before a single session has happened. Decline any tutor who offers a guaranteed score, because that offer is not available to them to make.

  • Identity and certificates checked at source, not taken from a profile claim
  • Teaching history recorded by board, course and level, Higher Level listed separately
  • Ask the tutor to mark one page aloud with the scheme open
  • Confirm the same person comes every week, in writing, before term starts
  • Walk away from anyone promising a specific grade or paid-up-front terms

Why are marks lost on questions the student could have answered?

Because most lost marks on Higher Level Analysis are abandonment, not ignorance. A student reads a long question, cannot see the end of it, writes nothing, and moves on. The scheme does not reward seeing the end of a question. It rewards the lines along the way: stating the correct rule, differentiating one factor correctly, setting the derivative to zero, writing the right integral even with the wrong limits. Those are method marks, and they are sitting on the page the student never started.

This is the heart of what a technique tutor does. The instruction is blunt and it takes weeks to stick: write the line you would write if you knew how to finish. If the question asks for a maximum, write the derivative and set it equal to zero even if the algebra afterwards defeats you. If it asks for a volume of revolution, write the integral with the correct function squared before you worry about evaluating it. If a student has been trained by years of school tests to produce only correct final answers, this instruction feels wrong to them, and the only thing that changes it is seeing marks awarded for their own abandoned lines on their own script.

The extended response paper at Higher Level magnifies all of it. Those questions are built in stages on unfamiliar ground, and each part is usually designed to be reachable from the part before. A student who gives up at part (c) has thrown away (d), (e) and (f), many of which only needed the result they were handed in (c) rather than their own. There is a specific habit worth drilling: when a part cannot be completed, state the result you would have obtained, label it clearly, and carry it forward. Follow-through credit exists for exactly this situation, and students who have never been shown it leave whole sections blank out of a misplaced sense of honesty.

Which is why the most valuable hour in IB DP Math AA HL home classes in Mumbai is not a lesson at all. It is a marking session. The student's own script, the published markscheme, and a tutor going through it line by line: this line earned a method mark, this one did not because the rule was quoted without being applied, this answer was correct and lost a mark to rounding, these four marks were available on a question you did not attempt. Model answers are comfortable and forgettable. A student's own script, marked honestly in front of them, is neither. What you want is a home tutor for Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches Mumbai students can hand a genuinely messy page to without flinching.

  • Write the first line even when the last line is out of reach
  • Set the derivative to zero, write the integral: those lines carry marks
  • On the extended paper, state a result and carry it forward explicitly
  • Never leave a later part blank because an earlier part failed
  • Marking the student's own script beats any model answer ever written

What should progress look like after a month of HL home tuition in Mumbai?

After four weeks of weekly sessions, expect behaviour to change before scores do. The first visible shift on this course is that blank space disappears: questions get attempted, first lines appear under long problems, and the student can tell you which paper a question came from and why it mattered. You should also see the tutor's diagnosis written down somewhere, in specific language. Weak on integration by substitution and on quoting the chain rule without applying it is a diagnosis. Needs to work harder is not, and an IB tutor Mumbai parents are paying for weekly should be able to produce the former by week three.

Over a full term, the measurable thing is marks on timed papers taken under something like real conditions, not confidence in the room. Confidence is a poor indicator on this subject and it moves early in both directions. A reasonable term looks like a student who no longer stalls on the non-calculator paper, who stores values instead of rounding, whose notation survives a whole question, and whose mock script shows attempts on everything even where the attempts fail. Scores on past papers typically move unevenly, topic by topic, rather than smoothly upward, and a flat month after a good month is normal rather than a crisis.

Across a full examination cycle, from a first-year Diploma start to the May session, the realistic goal is that the gap between what the student understands and what the script shows closes substantially. That gap is the thing technique work addresses. It is not the same as raising the ceiling of what a student can understand, which takes longer and depends on far more than a tutor.

The honest limits matter here. We do not guarantee grades, and no tutor who understands this examination will offer to. Outcomes depend on the student's work between sessions, the school's teaching, the exploration, the other five subjects competing for the same evenings, and the paper that turns up in May. What a good arrangement can reliably do is remove the avoidable losses: the abandoned question, the decimal on the exact paper, the unsupported calculator answer, the three parts left blank because part (c) failed. Those are worth a great deal and they are entirely within reach.

  • Week four: fewer blanks, attempted first lines, a written diagnosis in specific language
  • One term: timed paper marks, steadier notation, no stalling on the exact paper
  • Progress arrives topic by topic; a flat month after a strong one is ordinary
  • Tell us by week six if nothing has moved, not in February
  • We do not guarantee grades; we remove avoidable, repeatable losses

Getting started with IB DP Math AA HL home tuition in Mumbai

Have three things ready before you write to us and the first session will be worth twice as much. First, one recently marked script with the question paper, photographed properly rather than at an angle in bad light. Second, the honest timetable: which evenings are genuinely free after school activities, travel and the other five Diploma subjects, and which ones only look free. Third, a sentence on what you actually want changed, because stop losing marks on long questions and get him through Higher Level are different jobs with different tutors.

The first session itself should be unglamorous. The tutor marks the script you sent, out loud, with the scheme open, and sorts the lost marks into piles: content not known, method known but not written, arithmetic or notation, and time. That sorting is the plan. A student who has never seen their own marks sorted this way usually discovers that the content pile is the smallest of the four, which is both a relief and the beginning of a lot of specific work.

After that, the shape is simple and it should stay simple. A standing weekly slot that survives the monsoon. A past paper question set between sessions that is actually attempted under time. A marked script every fortnight rather than a steady diet of model solutions. And a short review at week six, where either the thing is working and you continue, or it is not and we change the tutor without any awkwardness about it.

  • Send one marked script, the question paper, and your real weekday availability
  • Name the school, the Diploma year and the locality in the first message
  • Expect the first session to be marking and sorting, not teaching
  • Book a standing weekly slot that can survive July and August
  • Review at week six and change the tutor if nothing has moved
FAQs

Mumbai tutoring — questions parents ask

Can a tutor mark my child's script the way an examiner would?+

Yes, and it is the most useful hour a Higher Level Analysis tutor will give you. Marking means working through the student's own paper line by line with the published markscheme open, deciding where a method mark was earned, where an answer mark was lost to rounding or notation, and which marks were sitting on a question that was never attempted. It is slower than writing out a clean model solution and considerably less comfortable, because the student sees how many of the lost marks were available to them. Ask any prospective tutor to do this on one paper before you commit to a term.

He understands the topic in class but loses marks in tests. What is actually going wrong?+

Usually three things at once, and none of them is understanding. First, abandonment: a long question looks unfinishable, so nothing gets written and the method marks along the way are lost. Second, exactness: a decimal appears on the paper that requires surds or log form, or a value is rounded mid-calculation. Third, evidence: an answer is produced from a calculator screen with no working on the page, so a small slip costs everything rather than one mark. All three are technique faults, which is good news, because technique responds to practice far faster than conceptual gaps do.

How do we practise the no-calculator paper at home between sessions?+

Put the calculator in another room and set a strict time for a short block of questions, then stop when the time is up rather than finishing comfortably. The point is to reproduce the conditions that cause stalling. Keep a running sheet of the exact values and identities that had to be looked up, because that sheet is the revision list. Mark the attempt against the scheme the same evening while the thinking is still fresh, and bring both the attempt and the marking to the next home tuition session. Twenty focused minutes done this way beats two unstructured hours with a textbook open.

What do IB tuition fees in Mumbai depend on?+

They depend on the board and level first, because Higher Level Analysis specialists are scarcer than general mathematics tutors, and scarcity moves rates more than anything else. After that: how far the tutor travels and across which zone boundary, session length and frequency, whether sessions are at home or online, and when in the year you start, since a February request competes with every other family's examination panic. We do not publish a price list because a single figure would be wrong for most people reading it. Ask for the rate in writing, with the travel assumption and the cancellation terms stated alongside it.

Can a tutor reach Kasarvadavali in Thane for a weekday evening session?+

Yes, provided the tutor already lives along that corridor. Ghodbunder Road decides this, not distance: a tutor near Thane station reaches Kasarvadavali in about twenty minutes off-peak and can take close to an hour in the evening peak, so we match within Thane rather than sending someone from Mulund or Powai. If your only workable slot is 6.30pm on a weekday, say so at the start and we will shortlist only tutors for whom that slot is genuinely repeatable through the monsoon. A Thane slot that works in November and collapses in July has not actually worked.

Does a parent need to be at home during a home tuition session?+

An adult should be present in the home, which is standard practice and protects everyone including the tutor. You do not need to sit in the room, and for a Higher Level student it is usually better that you do not, because a sixteen year old works differently with a parent watching. Set the session up in a shared space rather than a bedroom, with a table big enough for two people to write on one sheet of paper. Tell us at the start if nobody is home before seven, because that constraint changes the shortlist rather than ruling anything out.

What happens if the tutor cannot reach us during the monsoon?+

The session moves online that week rather than disappearing. We ask every tutor taking a home slot to agree a wet-weather fallback before the first session, which means both sides have tested the setup once while the weather was fine. July and August cost most families two or three weekday evenings, and the arrangements that survive are the ones where the online alternative was already arranged. Missed sessions should be either rescheduled within the same week or credited, and that rule needs to be written down in the first message, not negotiated on a bad evening in August.

Is an online session as useful as home tuition for working through maths?+

For marking a script and for question-setting, yes, once the student scans work properly. For diagnosing a student who freezes under time pressure, home is better, because the tutor sees the hesitation, the rewritten line and the page turned over unfinished. The equipment decides a lot of it: a tablet with a stylus or a document camera makes online genuinely workable, while a phone propped against a book does not. Most Higher Level families end up with both, running a home session for paper work and a shorter online session midweek for doubts and checking the practice actually happened.

There has been no visible progress after a month. What should we do?+

Say so immediately rather than waiting for the term to end. First ask the tutor for the written diagnosis and the evidence behind it; if there is no diagnosis after four sessions, that is the problem. Then check the obvious: is the student attempting the between-session work, and is the session actually producing writing or only demonstration? If both are fine and marks on timed papers have not moved, we change the tutor. That is a normal event and not a complaint, and the replacement starts from the same scripts so you do not pay for a second diagnostic month.

How many past papers should a DP2 student work through before mocks?+

Fewer than most students attempt, each one marked properly. A paper that is sat under time, marked against the scheme, and then reworked on the specific questions that failed is worth several papers skimmed and self-assessed generously. We would rather see one full non-calculator paper and one calculator paper a fortnight from November, with the marking session attached, than four unmarked papers a week in January. The marking is the learning; the sitting is just the data collection. Keep every marked script, because the pattern across five of them is far more informative than any single result.

Do you work with students from Dhirubhai Ambani International School or Hiranandani Foundation School?+

Families from those schools and many others in Mumbai use the platform, and that is the whole of the relationship. IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching service and is not affiliated with Dhirubhai Ambani International School, Hiranandani Foundation School, any other school named on this page, or the International Baccalaureate organisation. What naming a school does tell you is practical: tutors who already work in Bandra Kurla Complex or Powai know the local timetable, the usual internal deadline pattern and the realistic travel window, which is why we match by corridor as well as by subject.

Should Higher Level Analysis tuition start in DP1 or closer to the examinations?+

Start in the first Diploma year if the issue is shaky algebra, because rebuilding foundations takes months and cannot be done during study leave. Start later if the content is genuinely secure and the problem is only paper technique, since technique work has a shorter payback and is sharpest when there are real mock scripts to dissect. The worst option is the common one: waiting until February of the second year and then asking for the whole course. By then a tutor can improve how marks are collected but cannot teach two years of calculus.

We read the script first, shortlist two or three tutors who can mark it rather than only solve it, and state the travel assumption for each. You run one trial session built on that script. If it is not right, tell us within the week and we change the tutor.
