How does IB DP Global Politics home tuition in Mumbai actually start?

It starts with a piece of marked writing, not a phone call about ambitions. When a parent in Worli or Powai asks for IB DP Global Politics home tuition in Mumbai, the most useful thing they can send is one essay the school has already graded, with the teacher's comments still on it. Two paragraphs of a student's own prose tell a coordinator what three conversations cannot: whether the problem is thin content, a structure that never reaches a judgement, concepts used as ornament, or a command term that was read and then ignored. Those four faults need four different first months.

The sequence we run is this. 1. You send the marked script, the level, the Diploma Programme year and the days of the week that are genuinely free once school revision clinics and sport are accounted for. 2. A coordinator reads the script and shortlists two or three tutors who have taught this specific course, explaining what each would work on first. 3. You speak to them, and the student joins for part of it. 4. One trial session runs at your home on a timed question, handwritten, marked in front of the student against the criteria the school uses. 5. You fix a standing weekly slot, or you ask for another name.

The timed handwritten trial is not a formality and some parents find it abrupt. It exists because almost every family who calls about this subject describes a knowledge problem and almost every script shows a performance problem. A student can discuss a political concept fluently at the dinner table in Colaba and still produce an answer that describes three positions and declines to choose between them. You cannot diagnose that from a conversation. You can see it in forty minutes of writing under a clock.

Logistics get settled in the same first exchange rather than discovered later. Which gate the tutor uses, whether your society issues a monthly visitor pass or demands a fresh one each week, whether the lift queue at 6.30pm in a thirty-storey tower in Lower Parel adds ten minutes, and what time the student has genuinely eaten. A standing slot that collides with dinner or with a sibling's class collapses by the fifth week, and the replacement search then happens in the worst month of the year.

  • Send one marked script before anything else; it diagnoses faster than a call
  • Two or three names, each with a stated first priority for the student
  • Trial session at your home on a timed, handwritten question
  • Marking happens in front of the student, against the school's criteria
  • Settle gate passes, lift timings and dinner times in the first exchange

What the IB Diploma assesses in Global Politics at Standard and Higher Level

A parent who has not studied this subject usually assumes it rewards knowing about the world. It rewards something narrower: arguing about the world against published criteria. The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) places Global Politics in Group 3, individuals and societies, and assesses it through written examinations, a piece of engagement work and, at Higher Level (HL), an extension strand assessed by presentation. Standard Level (SL) students carry the papers and the engagement work without that extension. Each of those components has its own criteria, and a student who has never read those criteria is writing in the dark.

The criteria are the first thing a good Global Politics tutor in Mumbai puts in front of a student, in the school's own copy of the current guide. A student who has read the descriptors starts noticing the verbs: the difference between describing a position, explaining why somebody holds it, and evaluating how well it holds up. Three answers can contain identical facts and sit in three different bands because only one of them does the third thing. Most of what home tuition can change in a term is which of those three a student does by default under time pressure.

What a coordinator is looking for internally is a Global Politics IB Diploma Programme (DP), Years 1-2 tutor Mumbai families can keep across both years, because the technique work compounds. A tutor who establishes in DP1 that every extended answer ends with a defended judgement does not have to teach that again in DP2; they can spend DP2 on the harder business of making the judgement sound rather than merely present. Bringing in a new IB tutor Mumbai parents found in January of DP2 means spending the first month on groundwork the student should already own.

Do not take the Higher Level decision from a tutor. The DP coordinator at the school knows the timetable blocks, the student's other five subjects, and what the extension strand will cost in DP2 alongside the Extended Essay (EE) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK). A tutor can tell you honestly whether the student's writing is currently strong enough to carry an extra assessed strand, and should say so plainly. The decision itself belongs to the school, and anything in a subject guide that looks like a weighting, a duration or a mark total should be read from the school's current copy rather than taken from a tutor's recollection.

  • Group 3 subject assessed by written papers, engagement work and, at HL, presentations
  • Published criteria are the first document a student should read, not the last
  • Describing, explaining and evaluating sit in different bands with identical facts
  • Technique established in DP1 compounds; a January DP2 start spends a month catching up
  • Level decisions belong with the school's DP coordinator, not with a tutor

Paper 1: the marks a student loses by ignoring the material in front of them

Paper 1 supplies source or stimulus material in the examination and asks questions that depend on it. The commonest failure is not misreading the material. It is reading it once, feeling the panic of unfamiliar wording, and then answering from memory while the supplied extracts sit unused on the page. An examiner marking that script sees an answer about the general topic rather than an answer about the material, and the marks for using the sources are simply not available to award. No amount of background knowledge recovers them.

The drill that fixes this is mechanical and unglamorous, which is why it suits paid home tuition rather than a classroom of thirty. The student annotates the material before writing a word: who is speaking in each extract, what position they are taking, what they are quietly leaving out, and which of the course's concepts the extract touches. Only then does the pen move to the answer booklet. A tutor sitting beside the student in a flat in Chembur can see the exact second the student stops annotating and starts writing, which is the moment the marks begin to leak, and can stop it in the session rather than in the feedback.

The second Paper 1 skill is proportion. A student has to look at the marks available for each part, in the paper in front of them, and spend time accordingly rather than spending twenty minutes perfecting the first short answer and then racing the last one. This is learnt by doing it wrong under a clock in front of somebody who makes them look at their own timings afterwards. Done weekly from the middle of DP1, it becomes automatic. Introduced in the fortnight before mocks, it does not.

The third is that evidence has to be attributed and dated rather than asserted. A student who writes that an organisation issued a statement should be able to say roughly when and who said it, and a student who cannot should not write it. Home tuition is where that habit is built, because the tutor is in the room when the student reaches for a half-remembered example and can ask, immediately, where it came from. By DP2 a well-run programme has produced a file of cases organised by concept, each entry carrying what happened in neutral terms, who said it, and when.

  • Annotate every extract before writing: speaker, position, omission, concept
  • Marks for using supplied material cannot be earned by writing from memory
  • Split time by the marks available for each part, not by interest
  • Every example carries an attribution and a date, or it does not get written
  • Build a concept-indexed case file through DP1 rather than revising from scratch

Home tuition across Mumbai, from Colaba to Kasarvadavali

Global Politics has a small specialist pool in this city, so where you live changes what is realistically available on a weekday evening. South Mumbai is the easiest to staff for this subject and the slowest to cross. Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Fort, Walkeshwar, Tardeo and Worli are a few kilometres apart, and the signals at Peddar Road and Haji Ali can still cost a tutor forty minutes in the evening peak, so we match within the island rather than bringing somebody down the Western Express Highway. The Coastal Road and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link have helped, and Metro Line 3 along the Cuffe Parade to Bandra Kurla Complex alignment has helped more, but a Borivali tutor is still a bad weekly fixture in Fort.

The Central Suburbs turn on Powai, which is physically central and has no station of its own. Tutors reach Powai and Chandivali by road from Andheri East, Kanjurmarg or Ghatkopar along JVLR, and the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road matters more here than any train line. Kurla, Ghatkopar and Mulund sit on the Central Line and the Eastern Express Highway and are straightforward by comparison. A home tutor for Global Politics Mumbai families in Powai engage is usually someone living along that JVLR arc rather than anybody with a direct train.

In the Western Suburbs, matching along the line beats matching across it. Khar to Santacruz West works, Malad to Kandivali works, Bandra to Dahisar at 6.30pm does not, whatever Metro Lines 2A and 7 have done for the daytime. Juhu, Andheri West and Goregaon East carry large Diploma cohorts and therefore the most demand. The Eastern Suburbs run from Chembur and Govandi up through Vikhroli and Bhandup to Mulund on the Central and Harbour lines, with the Eastern Freeway making Wadala and Chembur much closer to the island city than the map implies; that one road is why a South Mumbai tutor is occasionally viable in Chembur and almost never in Bhandup.

Navi Mumbai works node to node. Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar and Panvel are short drives apart on Palm Beach Road and the Sion-Panvel Highway, and the Atal Setu plus the Harbour and Trans-Harbour lines have changed the commute into town, but a tutor crossing the creek twice a week in both directions will not hold the slot for a full term. Thane has the same arithmetic in one dimension: from the station east along Pokhran Road and Majiwada to Ghodbunder Road and Kasarvadavali, where twenty minutes off-peak becomes close to an hour at seven in the evening. Parents searching IB tutors near me Mumbai for this subject often find nobody near; the answer is usually a local tutor for some sessions and a specialist elsewhere for the rest.

Mumbai, Maharashtra is a single market for tutors that behaves like six, which is why IB DP Global Politics home tuition in Mumbai is matched zone by zone rather than city-wide. We will tell you plainly when a physical match in your node is unlikely within the next fortnight instead of leaving you waiting for a name that is not coming.

  • South Mumbai: Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Fort, Walkeshwar, Tardeo, Worli, matched within the island
  • Central Suburbs: Powai and Chandivali by road off JVLR; Kurla, Ghatkopar, Mulund on the line
  • Western Suburbs: Juhu, Khar, Santacruz West, Andheri West, Goregaon East, Malad, Kandivali
  • Eastern Suburbs: Chembur, Govandi, Wadala, Vikhroli, Bhandup, Mulund
  • Navi Mumbai: Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar, Panvel, matched node to node
  • Thane: Pokhran Road, Majiwada, Ghodbunder Road, Kasarvadavali

Mumbai school deadlines and the weeks home tuition has to work around

The pressure on a Global Politics student rarely comes from Global Politics. It comes from the week in which the engagement write-up, a science internal assessment draft and an Extended Essay deadline arrive together, set by three different teachers who did not consult each other. Families at Cathedral and John Connon School in Fort, B.D. Somani International School in Cuffe Parade, Bombay International School in Babulnath, Aditya Birla World Academy in Tardeo and JBCN International School, Parel all deal with their own version of this, and a tutor working across four schools is tracking four separate draft calendars for the same component.

The weeks to protect are the ones before those clusters, not the ones inside them. A home tuition slot in the fortnight when three drafts are due will be spent on whatever is most overdue, which is reasonable and is not technique work. So a sensible programme front-loads: the timed handwritten practice happens in the quiet weeks of the autumn term and the period after the winter break, and the weeks around the clusters are used for triage. Parents who book from January of DP2 get the triage and almost none of the technique, which is why we push for a DP1 start whenever the family can.

Schools in the Central and Eastern Suburbs set the same traps on a different timetable. Hiranandani Foundation School and Podar International School in Powai, Witty International School and JBCN International School, Chembur, NES International School in Mulund West, Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania School in Thane and D.Y. Patil International School in Nerul each run their own mock schedule, and the school's own revision clinics will often be scheduled directly on top of the slot you have fixed. Tell the tutor about those clinics in advance. A clash discovered on the evening costs the session and, worse, trains the student to treat the slot as optional.

Monsoon weeks are the other thing to plan around honestly. A tutor travelling to Chembur or along Ghodbunder Road is the first casualty when the roads flood, so agree in advance that a washed-out session moves to video rather than disappearing, and agree it in June rather than arguing about it in July. Naming schools here is context only: IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with any school named on this page, with the International Baccalaureate organisation, or with any examination board. Where a school's instruction conflicts with a tutor's advice, follow the school.

  • Deadline clusters come from other subjects, not from Global Politics
  • Front-load timed practice into quiet weeks; use cluster weeks for triage
  • Tell the tutor about school revision clinics before they clash with your slot
  • Agree in advance that a monsoon cancellation moves to video, not to nothing
  • IB Gram is independent and not affiliated with any school named here

Home classes, online or hybrid: which suits examination technique in Mumbai?

For technique work, the room has a genuine advantage and it is specific. A tutor sitting beside a student watches the writing happen in real time: the pause before the second paragraph, the moment the annotation stops, the sentence where the student abandons the command term and starts narrating. None of that is visible from a marked script afterwards and little of it is visible on a video call. IB home tuition in Mumbai is therefore the mode we recommend first for a student whose problem is performance under time, which is most students in this subject. IB DP Global Politics home tuition in Mumbai also removes the setup friction of a call: the paper is on the table, the criteria are beside it, and nobody is sharing a screen.

Online is better than its reputation and better than home tuition at one thing in particular. An IB online tutor in Mumbai can mark an essay in a shared document while the student watches each comment appear against their own sentence, and the student can argue with the comment immediately. Paper feedback handed over at the end of a session in a flat gets glanced at and filed. Online also removes travel from the fee calculation and widens the pool enormously, which matters for a subject with this few specialists. The sibling page on this site deals with online teaching in detail.

Hybrid is what most DP2 families end up running, and the split that works is not random. Keep the in-person sessions for timed handwritten work and for marking a script with the student at the same table, because that is where presence pays. Use video for the weeks when the student needs a conversation rather than a clock: unpicking a command term, arguing a position back and forth, checking the reading. Global Politics home classes Mumbai parents arrange for two or three students from the same year group work well for the argued sessions and badly for timed practice, because one student always finishes first and the clock stops meaning anything.

On cost, be realistic about what travel does. An IB home tutor in Mumbai crossing two zones is paying for that journey somewhere, either in the rate or in reliability, and usually both. If the specialist you want lives in Mulund and you live in Khar, a weekly video slot plus a monthly visit will get you more teaching for the same money than a weekly in-person slot that gets cancelled every third week. Parents who insist on in-person only, in a node with no local specialist, frequently end up with a general humanities tutor instead of a Global Politics one, which is the worse trade.

  • In person is best for timed writing, because the tutor watches it happen
  • Online is best for live marking in a shared document the student watches
  • Hybrid: in-person for timed work and script marking, video for argument
  • Small groups suit argued sessions and ruin timed practice
  • Insisting on in-person in a thin node often costs you the subject specialist

How do you check an IB home tutor in Mumbai before the first session?

IB Gram checks identity documents, the qualifications claimed and, above all, the teaching history on this particular course before any name reaches you. The question we press hardest is whether the tutor has marked Diploma Programme work against the published criteria rather than simply studied politics at university. Those are different jobs. We ask for a sample of written feedback on a real student script, because feedback is where standard shows: a tutor whose comments say good point and needs more detail is not going to move a student from describing to evaluating. Anyone offering IB DP Global Politics home tuition in Mumbai should be able to hand you a marked script and defend every annotation on it.

There is a subject-specific check that generic vetting misses. Ask the tutor how they handle a question where their own view is strong. The answer you want is about attributing positions to the people who hold them and about representing an opposing perspective accurately, not about keeping quiet. A tutor who argues the side the student did not take, in good faith and using the strongest version of that case, is teaching the skill the criteria actually reward. A tutor who signals what the right answer is trains a student to write one-sided essays that lose marks for exactly that.

Your own twenty-minute check is more useful than any document. Sit at the table for the last ten minutes of the trial session. Ask the tutor to name the student's weakest assessment skill and say what the first four weeks will do about it; specific answers are a good sign and general reassurance is not. Ask to see the marked trial script. Ask what they will not do, which is a question most tutors have never been asked and which separates the honest ones quickly.

Be wary of a tutor who promises a specific grade, implies influence over predicted grades, or suggests they know what will come up in the papers. None of it exists. Also check the practical things nobody thinks to ask: whether the tutor brings past material or expects you to print it, whether they will mark work between sessions and how quickly, and whether they are willing to write two lines of notes after each session so you know what happened without interrogating a sixteen-year-old.

  • Teaching and marking history on this course, not a political science degree alone
  • A real marked script, with every annotation defensible, requested up front
  • Ask how they handle a topic where their own view is strong
  • Ask for the student's weakest skill and the plan for the first four weeks
  • Be wary of anyone who promises a specific grade or hints at paper content
  • Agree who prints past material and how fast work is marked between sessions

Paper 2, the command term, and writing to the mark allocation under time

Paper 2 asks for extended written responses, and the command term in the question is the single most ignored word on the page. A command term is not decoration: it sets the structure the answer must have. A question asking a student to evaluate the extent to which something is the case is asking for a judgement, with the weight of the evidence shown on both sides and a position taken and defended. A student who answers it by explaining two perspectives at equal length and stopping has written a competent answer to a question that was not asked. Home tuition fixes this faster than anything else, because the tutor can make the student underline the command term, say out loud what shape the answer therefore has, and only then start writing.

A worked example, deliberately hypothetical so nothing turns on real events. Suppose a question asks a student to evaluate the extent to which membership of an international organisation constrains a state's sovereignty. A weak answer lists what the organisation does, then lists what states do anyway. A strong answer defines the contested term, sovereignty, in the sense the course uses; sets out the strongest case that constraint is real, attributing each position to those who argue it; sets out the strongest case against; weighs which evidence carries more and says why; and reaches a conclusion that follows from the weighing rather than from the student's preference. The judgement does not have to be bold. It has to be earned.

Representing the opposing perspective accurately is where marks are genuinely won, and it is the hardest thing to teach a student who already has opinions. The test a tutor should use is whether somebody who actually holds the position would read the student's summary of it and recognise themselves in it. A caricature set up to be knocked over scores badly, even when the student's own conclusion is sensible, because the criteria reward engagement with perspectives rather than defeat of straw ones. Practically, this means the tutor spends sessions making the student write the other side's best paragraph before writing their own.

Then the concepts, used precisely. The course supplies an analytical vocabulary, words such as power, legitimacy, sovereignty, interdependence, development, and students scatter them through essays as signals that they have been paying attention. An examiner reads them as claims. If a student writes that a decision was legitimate, the essay has to say legitimate in whose eyes and on what basis, or the word has done nothing. A useful home tuition exercise is to take the student's own paragraph, circle every concept word, and ask them to justify each one or delete it. Most get deleted the first few times.

Finally, the clock and the marks. The student should look at the marks available for each question or part in the paper in front of them and allocate minutes in proportion, decide before writing how many points the answer needs, and accept that a finished adequate answer beats an unfinished elegant one. The way this becomes automatic is the least popular part of the whole programme: the student writes the paper by hand, under time, at home; the tutor marks it against the published criteria with the student present; and the student then marks their own next script against the same criteria before the tutor does. Students who have marked three of their own scripts write differently. They have seen what an examiner cannot give marks for.

  • Underline the command term and state the answer's shape before writing
  • A judgement must be weighed and defended, not asserted or avoided
  • Write the opposing side's best paragraph before writing your own
  • Justify every concept word in the paragraph or delete it
  • Allocate minutes in proportion to the marks available for each part
  • Have the student mark their own script against the criteria before the tutor does

What four weeks, one term and one exam cycle of home tuition should change

In the first four weeks, watch the paper rather than the marks. By the fourth session a student should be underlining command terms without being told, annotating source material before writing, and finishing timed answers instead of abandoning the last one. Marks usually move later than behaviour does, and a school mark in week four often reflects work set in week one. If none of those behaviours has changed by session five, raise it then. Four weeks is early enough to change tutor without damaging the year.

By the end of a term, extended answers should be reaching a defended judgement as a matter of habit, the case file should have real attributed entries in it, and concept words should survive the circle-and-justify test more often than not. School feedback should be using different language. A good sign is that the tutor can predict what the school will say about a piece of work before the school says it, because it means they are marking against the same criteria rather than their own taste.

After one exam cycle, which for most families means after mocks, the measurable thing is the size of the gap between what the student knows and what reaches the page under time. That gap is almost always bigger than the knowledge gap, and it is made of handwriting speed, time allocation and answering the question actually asked. A tutor who reads a mock script and talks only about missing content has read it badly. IB Gram does not guarantee grades and nor can any tutor; what good home tuition does is shrink that gap and tell you honestly how wide it still is in March.

When it is not working, the replacement is a short conversation with the coordinator and a new trial session, with the incoming tutor briefed on what did not land. Most failures here are not competence failures. A tutor who presses hard suits a student who enjoys being argued with and shuts down one who needs coaxing; a gentle tutor and a student who coasts are a comfortable waste of two years. An IB private tutor Mumbai families hire directly, with no third party, is harder to change for exactly this reason: there is nowhere neutral for that conversation to happen.

  • Week four: command terms underlined, material annotated, answers finished
  • One term: defended judgements by habit, a populated and attributed case file
  • After mocks: measure the gap between knowledge and timed handwritten output
  • Grades are never guaranteed, by IB Gram or by any tutor listed on it
  • Most mismatches are about argument style, and are fixed in week four

Starting Global Politics home tuition in Mumbai this term

Send three things and we can move the same working day: one piece of marked writing, the level and Diploma Programme year, and two or three weekly windows that survive school clinics, sport and dinner. Add your area and the society or building name, because that determines whether a local specialist exists or whether a hybrid arrangement will serve you better. If you have the school's current subject guide to hand, say so; the tutor will want to work from that copy rather than from memory.

The first session should feel diagnostic and slightly uncomfortable. Expect a timed handwritten question, expect it to be marked at the table with the student watching, and expect to be told at the end which single skill the first month will target and how it will be measured. A first session that tours the syllabus and ends with encouragement has told you nothing. Ask for the marked script before you commit to a standing slot.

After that, the rhythm that works is one timed piece a fortnight, marked in the room, with the student marking their own next attempt first. It is unglamorous and it is what moves scripts. Tell us whether you want in person, video or a mix, and tell us which you would accept as well as which you prefer, because for a subject with this few specialists in Mumbai, a small amount of flexibility on mode is usually the difference between a Global Politics teacher and a general humanities tutor.

  • Send one marked script, the level and year, and two or three free windows
  • Include your area and building name so we know what is locally possible
  • First session: timed handwritten question, marked at the table
  • Ask for the marked trial script before fixing a standing slot
  • Say which mode you prefer and which you would accept
FAQs

Mumbai tutoring — questions parents ask

How many home tuition sessions a week does Global Politics really need?+

One well-used session a week carries most students, and IB DP Global Politics home tuition in Mumbai is usually booked at that frequency with a second session added in the run-up to mocks and the written papers. The constraint is not teaching time, it is writing time: a student has to produce work between sessions for the session to have anything to mark. Two sessions a week with nothing written in between is an expensive conversation. The pattern that works is a weekly slot plus one timed handwritten piece a fortnight, rising to weekly timed practice from roughly January of the second Diploma Programme year.

Can a tutor get a gate pass for our building in Worli for a standing weekly slot?+

Usually, but it needs arranging by you rather than by the tutor. Most South Mumbai societies will issue a recurring visitor entry for a named tutor at a fixed day and time once a resident requests it in writing; some insist on a fresh pass each visit, which costs ten minutes at the gate every week. Tell us the procedure when you book. In towers around Worli and Lower Parel, also check the lift situation at 6.30pm, because a tutor who is punctual at the gate can still be late at your door.

My son writes a great deal and never reaches a conclusion. Is that fixable?+

Yes, and it is one of the most fixable faults in this subject. Answers that describe several positions at equal length and stop are usually produced by a student who has read the question's command term and then written the essay they already had. The fix is procedural: underline the command term, say out loud what structure it demands, decide the judgement before writing rather than hoping to discover it, and leave the final paragraph planned from the start. Expect visible change within four to six weeks of timed practice.

Will the tutor mark my daughter's script against the real assessment criteria?+

They should, from the school's current copy of the guide, with the descriptors visible on the table. Marking against a tutor's general sense of quality is the commonest weakness in private tuition and it produces encouraging feedback that does not predict the school's mark. Ask to see a marked script from the trial session and check that annotations point at criteria rather than at style. Better still, ask the tutor to have your daughter mark her own next attempt against the descriptors before they mark it themselves.

What do IB tuition fees in Mumbai depend on for home tuition in this subject?+

Scarcity first, then level, travel and session length. Global Politics has a small specialist pool across Mumbai, and scarcity moves rates more than any other factor. Higher Level with its extension strand needs more support than Standard Level. Travel is real money and real reliability: a tutor crossing from Mulund to Khar is charging for that hour somewhere. Session length and frequency do the rest. We will not print a figure, because a page quoting rates goes stale; ask the coordinator for a current range once the level and mode are settled.

Where in the home should the session happen if we live in a two-bedroom flat in Chembur?+

A dining table beats a bedroom, and the main consideration is whether the student can speak at length without feeling overheard. This subject needs the student arguing out loud, so a space with the television on in the same room does not work, and a bedroom with the door shut removes the useful accountability. Clear the table, keep the phone in another room, and have a printed copy of whatever is being marked. A small flat is not a disadvantage here; a noisy one is.

Is it too late to start home tuition in January of the second Diploma year?+

It is not too late to help, but it changes what the help is. A January start buys triage: paper technique, time allocation, command terms and finishing answers, which is genuinely where most marks are lost and can move within a term. What it cannot buy is the two years of attributed case notes and accumulated writing practice that a DP1 start produces. Be direct with the tutor about the timeline so the plan is built for it rather than pretending there is a full programme left to run.

How does a tutor handle a topic where our family holds strong views?+

By teaching the student to represent every perspective accurately and to attribute each position to those who hold it, which is what the criteria reward. A tutor's job here is not to agree or disagree with a household; it is to make sure the student can set out the strongest version of a case they personally reject, well enough that somebody holding it would recognise it. Expect generic framings in practice questions rather than examples chosen to provoke, and raise it with the coordinator at once if you hear anything that reads as advocacy.

Our tutor travels from Ghatkopar to Powai and keeps arriving late in the evening. What should we do?+

Move the slot before you move the tutor. The JVLR approach to Powai from Ghatkopar and Andheri East is unpredictable after six in the evening, and a tutor who is twenty minutes late is usually fighting the road rather than being careless. Try a slot half an hour later, a weekend morning, or a video session on weeknights with the in-person slot at the weekend. If lateness continues after the slot has moved, tell the coordinator and ask for a name on the Powai side of the arc.

What happens to a missed session when a monsoon commute stops the tutor reaching us?+

Agree the rule in June, not in July. The arrangement most families settle on is that a washed-out session converts to a video lesson at the same time, and only becomes a cancellation if neither side can manage that. Sessions cancelled outright should be rescheduled within the fortnight rather than banked indefinitely, because banked sessions are never used. Put it in writing at the start, including how much notice either side gives, and the July conversation never happens.

Do we need past papers at home, and which ones should we have?+

Yes, and they should be the school's current material rather than whatever can be found online, because older papers were written against earlier versions of the subject guide. Ask the school's Diploma Programme coordinator what the students have access to, and ask the tutor what they bring. Settle who prints before the first session; a tutor arriving to find nothing printed loses fifteen minutes of a paid hour. A folder of the student's own marked scripts, kept in order, is worth more by March than any bank of unused papers.

Can one tutor cover both Global Politics and the Extended Essay in this subject?+

Sometimes, and it is worth asking, but the school's supervisor owns the Extended Essay and a tutor must not displace them. A tutor who knows the subject can help a student narrow a research question, understand what an argued essay of that length needs and keep to the school's internal deadlines. They should not be drafting or rewriting, and any honest tutor will say so. Tell us at the outset if you want this, because it narrows the shortlist to tutors comfortable working alongside a school supervisor.

Send one marked piece of writing, the level and Diploma Programme year, your area and two or three weekly windows that genuinely survive school clinics and dinner. A coordinator reads the script and comes back with two or three names and what each would tackle first. One trial session runs at your home on a timed handwritten question, marked at the table while your child watches. Read that marked script, then decide. If the name is wrong, ask for another.
