How IB Gram shortlists an IB DP french b private tutor in Mumbai

A search for an IB DP french b private tutor in Mumbai almost always has a specific trigger behind it. A Paper 2 mock came back well below the predicted grade. The individual oral happened and the student froze after the first thirty seconds. A DP1 report said the student was coping, without saying how, and the parent could not tell whether that meant fine or barely. The first thing we ask for is that trigger in your own words, because it decides what kind of teacher should take the case. A student who understands spoken French but cannot produce written French under timed conditions needs a different tutor from one who has never properly learned how the tense system behaves.

The second thing we ask is where you are and when a session can realistically happen. A French B specialist is a narrower pool than a Maths or Physics tutor, so geography carries more weight on this page than it would on one about Chemistry. Matching a tutor who lives in Khar West to a family in Khar West produces a standing 6.30pm slot that survives a full term. Matching the same tutor to Kharghar produces a Palm Beach Road drive that works for three weeks and then quietly falls apart. We would rather say that on the first call than place someone who cannot hold the schedule once the monsoon or the exam season arrives.

The third is level and intention. French B at Higher Level, with two literary works sitting behind the individual oral, is a different brief from French B at Standard Level taken by a student who wants a solid grade without it eating the hours that Physics needs. So we ask which course the school has placed the student in, whether a change is being discussed at home, and what the school's languages coordinator has actually said rather than what the family has inferred. Placement is the school's decision, taken with the family, and a good tutor's job is to make the chosen course work, not to campaign for a different one.

Only after those three answers do we look at people. The shortlist stays short on purpose: two or three profiles that genuinely fit, rather than a long list that makes the parent do the filtering. Here is the sequence end to end.

  • 1. Tell us the level, your Mumbai locality and two time slots that genuinely work
  • 2. We check the French B pool in your zone and the zone next to it
  • 3. You receive two or three profiles: IB history, levels taught, real availability
  • 4. A first session happens at your home or online, whichever you prefer
  • 5. After it you keep the tutor, ask for another option, or stop there
  • 6. The weekly slot is then fixed around the school's calendar, not ours

French B, French ab initio or a different language: who decides?

Three routes exist for French inside the Diploma Programme (DP). French B is designed for a student who has already studied the language, usually across several years of the Middle Years Programme (MYP) or an IGCSE course. French ab initio is designed for a genuine beginner and is offered at Standard Level (SL) only. The third route is a different language entirely, or in some schools a second Language A. Which of the three a student takes is decided by the school together with the family, on the basis of the student's real prior learning rather than on which course looks easiest from outside.

Families sometimes read ab initio as the soft option and ask to be moved into it for a cleaner grade. It is not the easy-score route. Ab initio takes a student from nothing to assessed performance inside two years, which is a steep slope in its own right, and a student who already has real French does not belong in it. Schools check for exactly that, because the course is meant to match the starting point. A child who has studied French since Grade 6 will find ab initio an uncomfortable fit even though the vocabulary list looks shorter, and the school will usually say no for good reason.

A French B IB Diploma Programme (DP), Years 1-2 tutor Mumbai families shortlist should treat both years as one arc, because whatever DP1 leaves unfinished, DP2 pays for with interest. The window for changing a language sits early. Most Mumbai schools will consider a move during the first term of DP1 and close it well before the second year opens, since the oral work and the reading built into the course cannot be rebuilt from scratch late. If a change is genuinely on the table, put it to the coordinator in writing early in DP1, with the student's prior French set out plainly, rather than waiting for the first full set of mocks to make the argument for you.

Students in Mumbai, Maharashtra frequently arrive at French B already running three or four languages between home, school and the autorickshaw queue, and that is an advantage rather than a complication. A child who moves between Marathi, Hindi, Gujarati and English across a single day already has the habit of holding two grammars in the head at once, which is most of what a third or fourth language asks for. French B also asks them to read across French-speaking cultures that include France, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada, Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, Haiti and Morocco. No one of those varieties of French is more correct than another, and a tutor who implies otherwise is teaching snobbery rather than language.

  • French B assumes prior learning; ab initio assumes a genuine beginner
  • Ab initio is a Standard Level (SL) course and is not a shortcut to a 7
  • Placement follows the student's actual prior French, school and family deciding
  • The practical change window is the first term of DP1, not DP2
  • A second Language A is a separate conversation with the coordinator
  • Multilingual students usually gain ground in a third or fourth language

What Paper 1, Paper 2 and the individual oral actually ask for

French B is assessed through a Paper 1 writing task, a Paper 2 that covers listening and reading, and an individual oral. Paper 1 asks the student to produce one piece of writing in a specified text type for a specified audience, and this is where strong classroom students most often lose marks they did not expect to lose. A blog entry, a formal letter, a set of instructions and a speech are not the same object with different vocabulary. Each carries conventions: how it opens, how it addresses the reader, whether it may use the first person, how it signs off. A good French B tutor in Mumbai will make the student write three text types badly and then fix them, rather than lecturing about registers in the abstract.

Paper 2 is the half that rewards volume of exposure. The listening component is unforgiving in a way practice papers alone do not fix, because speed and accent variation are the real difficulty rather than vocabulary. A student who has only ever heard the teacher's French and one set of recordings will struggle the first time a speaker from Dakar, Brussels or Montreal appears. The reading component punishes students who answer from the gist instead of locating the line that carries the answer. Both improve with a weekly routine of short, timed exposure rather than with a cram the fortnight before mocks.

The individual oral is the component families understand least and worry about most. At Higher Level it is built on an extract from one of the literary works studied, which is the element that genuinely separates HL from SL. At Standard Level it is built on a visual stimulus connected to the themes of the course. In both cases the student presents and then holds a conversation that follows on from what they said, so an answer memorised word for word is a liability: the follow-up question is where a rehearsed speech collapses. Structures, durations and the exact format are revised by the International Baccalaureate on its own cycle, so confirm the current shape with your school's coordinator or the current subject guide rather than with any page on the internet, including this one.

One boundary matters more than any technique. A tutor may teach, model, question, drill and mark. A tutor may not write or supply any part of a piece the student submits, in whole or in part, and no reputable French B teacher will offer to. If a student hands in prose that is not theirs, the problem is no longer a grade problem.

  • Paper 1: one writing task, a named text type, a named audience and purpose
  • Text-type conventions: openings, address, register, sign-off, all markable
  • Paper 2 listening: speed and accent range beat vocabulary as the real obstacle
  • Paper 2 reading: find the line that answers, do not answer from the gist
  • Individual oral: HL works from a literary extract, SL from a visual stimulus
  • Confirm current component structure with the school, not with a blog

Where in Mumbai a French B home tutor can actually reach you

An IB DP french b private tutor in Mumbai is only useful if the journey to your door is repeatable fifty times. In South Mumbai the distances are short and the clock is not: a tutor crossing from Worli to Colaba covers a handful of kilometres and can still lose forty minutes at the Peddar Road and Haji Ali signals in the evening peak. Families in Cuffe Parade, Colaba, Walkeshwar, Tardeo and Fort are therefore matched inside the island rather than from the suburbs, using the Western Line out of Churchgate and Grant Road, the Harbour Line through Dockyard Road, Metro Line 3 towards BKC and the Coastal Road where it helps.

The Western Suburbs run north to south along the Western Express Highway and the Western Line, which makes matching along the line far more reliable than matching across it. Khar West to Santacruz West works. Malad to Kandivali works. Bandra to Andheri is fine at 11am and painful at 6pm. Metro Line 1 between Versova, Andheri and Ghatkopar and Metro Lines 2A and 7 between Dahisar and Gundavali have changed what a tutor in Borivali or Goregaon can accept on a weekday, and Link Road remains the fallback when the highway seizes.

In the Central Suburbs, Powai is the exception that shapes every schedule. It sits in the geographic middle of Mumbai with no station of its own, so tutors reach Hiranandani Gardens and Chandivali by road from Andheri East, Kanjurmarg or Ghatkopar along JVLR. Kurla, Ghatkopar and Mulund sit on the Central Line with the Eastern Express Highway alongside, and the SCLR links Chembur across to Santacruz in a way the map undersells. The Eastern Suburbs run from Chembur and Govandi up through Vikhroli and Bhandup to Mulund West, and the Eastern Freeway puts South Mumbai within reach of Chembur and Wadala faster than most parents assume.

Navi Mumbai is planned in nodes, so French B home classes Mumbai parents arrange in Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar or Panvel work best node to node, with the Harbour Line, the Trans-Harbour Line, Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1, Palm Beach Road and the Sion-Panvel Highway doing the work. The Atal Setu has made a Chembur to Ulwe run plausible, but pulling a tutor across the creek from the island city for a 7pm weekday lesson rarely survives a whole term. Thane spreads from the station east along Pokhran Road, Majiwada and Ghodbunder Road, and Ghodbunder sets the timetable: twenty minutes to Kasarvadavali off-peak, closer to an hour in the evening. Thane tutors cover Thane; Mulund tutors sometimes cross over.

  • South Mumbai: Cuffe Parade, Colaba, Walkeshwar, Tardeo, matched within the island
  • Western Suburbs: Khar West, Santacruz West, Juhu, Malad, Kandivali, Borivali
  • Central Suburbs: Powai and Hiranandani Gardens reached by road via JVLR
  • Eastern Suburbs: Chembur, Vikhroli, Bhandup, Mulund West, Eastern Freeway south
  • Navi Mumbai: Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar, Panvel, matched node to node
  • Thane: Pokhran Road, Majiwada, Kasarvadavali, with Ghodbunder Road setting timings

How the Mumbai school calendar sets the French B pressure points

Mumbai families choosing French B are usually inside one of a small set of school calendars, and those calendars decide when a tutor is useful. Dhirubhai Ambani International School and the American School of Bombay in BKC, Ascend International School nearby, Ecole Mondiale World School and Jamnabai Narsee International School in Juhu, Oberoi International School off JVLR in Goregaon East, Hiranandani Foundation School in Powai, Aditya Birla World Academy in Tardeo, Bombay International School at Babulnath, B.D. Somani International School in Cuffe Parade, the Cathedral and John Connon School in Fort, JBCN International School at Parel, Borivali, Oshiwara and Chembur, NES International School in Mulund West and D.Y. Patil International School in Nerul all run students into the Diploma Programme with different internal deadline rhythms.

The pressure points are structural rather than mysterious. The opening term of DP1 is where the language either settles or does not, and it is also the term in which a change of language is still realistic. The middle of DP1 brings the first proper written assessments, which is when an IGCSE-comfortable student discovers that classroom fluency and a marked Paper 1 are different currencies. The start of DP2 collides with the Extended Essay (EE) and the first Internal Assessment (IA) deadlines in other subjects, so French practice is the first thing a stressed student drops. The oral work then lands in the same window as mock examinations, and after that the May session is simply close.

This matters for scheduling in a very practical way. A French B slot booked in August and held weekly through the year costs the family less disruption than a crash course bought in February, because listening and oral fluency do not compress. The parents who get the most out of a private tutor are the ones who treat the weekly hour as fixed furniture and let the content shift with whatever the school has set that fortnight. Ask your school's coordinator for the internal assessment calendar in writing and give it to the tutor in the first session; most tutors will plan backwards from it rather than running a generic syllabus.

One thing to be clear about: naming these schools here is local context, nothing more. IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with any school named on this page, with the International Baccalaureate organisation, or with any language-certification body. We do not guarantee grades, and no honest tutor will claim otherwise. What a tutor controls is the quality and frequency of the practice; what the school controls is the course and the placement; what the examiner controls is the mark.

  • First term of DP1: language settles, and a course change is still realistic
  • Mid DP1: first marked written work exposes the IGCSE-to-DP gap
  • Start of DP2: EE and IA deadlines crowd out daily French practice
  • Oral window overlaps mocks, so rehearsal has to start before that fortnight
  • Give the tutor the school's assessment calendar in session one
  • IB Gram is independent of every school named and does not guarantee grades

Is home tuition or online better for IB DP French B in Mumbai?

For most DP French B students in Mumbai, home tuition is the stronger default, and it is the lead service here. An IB DP french b private tutor in Mumbai who sits at your dining table reads things a screen hides: the student who nods at a question they did not understand, the handwriting that slows down the moment the subjunctive appears, the phone face-down but buzzing. Speaking practice is also simply easier in a room. Interruptions, overlaps and the small corrections that build oral confidence happen naturally face to face and get flattened by half a second of audio latency. An IB home tutor in Mumbai also inherits the household's rhythm, which matters when the slot has to survive exam season.

The honest costs of home tuition are travel and rigidity. A tutor who crosses Mumbai for you is paying for that crossing in time, which narrows the slots they can offer and makes a 7pm Tuesday hard to move. Rain cancels sessions. A tutor travelling from Andheri to Kharghar on a Wednesday evening will eventually ask to change the day. Families who choose IB home tuition in Mumbai with a tutor matched from the next locality rather than the next zone lose very little of this to friction, which is exactly why we match by zone first and by profile second.

Online earns its place in two situations. The first is scarcity: French B specialists are thinner on the ground than Maths tutors, so a family in Panvel or Kasarvadavali may get a materially better teacher as an IB online tutor in Mumbai than the best available option within driving distance. The second is the listening and reading half of the course, which is genuinely well suited to a screen, since audio, transcripts, annotated texts and timed reading all work better shared than photocopied. The trade-off is oral spontaneity and the tutor's reduced read on attention.

Hybrid is what most of our French B families settle into by the second term. One home session a week for writing, oral rehearsal and the awkward conversation about effort, plus one shorter online session for listening drills and marked work returned on screen. A home tutor for French B Mumbai parents book for the Saturday writing hour and a weekday online half-hour for listening is a pattern that holds through February without anyone resenting the drive. Whichever shape you pick, fix it for a term before judging it; switching modes every three weeks guarantees nothing except lost continuity.

  • Home tuition first: better oral practice, better read on real understanding
  • Home sessions cost flexibility; a wet Wednesday is a cancelled Wednesday
  • Online widens the French B pool for Panvel, Kharghar and far-north Thane
  • Listening and reading drills work well on screen with shared audio and texts
  • Hybrid: weekly home session for writing and oral, shorter online for listening
  • Commit to one shape for a full term before changing it

How is an IB DP french b private tutor in Mumbai verified?

Every IB DP french b private tutor in Mumbai on the platform is checked on four things before a profile reaches a parent: government photo identity, the degree or qualification claimed, demonstrable French competence, and actual Diploma Programme teaching history at the level requested. The last one is the filter that removes most applicants. Plenty of people in Mumbai teach excellent conversational French and have never marked against IB criteria, which is a different skill. A tutor who has taught French B at Higher Level knows why a technically correct paragraph still scores poorly on the message criterion, and that knowledge does not transfer from general language teaching.

We also check availability honestly, because an unreliable slot damages a DP student more than a slightly weaker tutor does. A profile states the zones the tutor will actually travel to and the evenings they can hold, not the ones they would like to. Parents searching IB tutors near me Mumbai often assume the constraint is price; in French B it is usually calendar. An IB private tutor Mumbai families keep for two full years is almost always one whose commute was sane from the start.

There are things only you can check, and a first session is the place to do it. Ask the tutor to name the components of the course and say which the student is weakest in, and listen for whether the answer is specific. Ask how they will mark a Paper 1 task, and whether they will show the student the criteria rather than just a score. Ask what they will not do: a tutor who hesitates when asked whether they will draft work for a student is the wrong tutor. Ask what the student will be doing between sessions, because unsupervised listening practice is where most of the gain actually comes from.

Finally, be wary of anyone who promises a specific grade in return for a booking. French B outcomes depend on the student's prior learning, the hours they put in, the school's teaching and the examiner's judgement, and a tutor controls exactly one of those four. We do not guarantee grades and we would rather lose a booking than pretend otherwise. If a tutor's pitch rests on a number rather than on a diagnosis of your child's actual weakness, that tells you what you need to know about the diagnosis.

  • Checked: photo identity, qualification, French competence, DP teaching history
  • Level matters: French B HL experience is not interchangeable with general French
  • Stated travel zones and evenings are the tutor's real ones, not aspirational
  • Ask in session one which component the student is weakest in, and why
  • Ask directly whether the tutor will ever draft submitted work; the answer is no
  • A pitch built on a promised number is a pitch without a diagnosis

HL or SL French B: four things Mumbai families misjudge

The first misjudgement is treating Higher Level (HL) as Standard Level (SL) with more hours. The structural difference is the literature element: HL students study literary works and the HL individual oral is built on an extract from one of them, which asks for a different kind of reading from the thematic texts that carry SL. A student who is strong at functional French and allergic to literary analysis can be perfectly placed at SL and badly placed at HL, and no amount of extra vocabulary fixes that mismatch. Ask the school specifically what the HL literature component will require, in reading hours and in kind, before taking the decision.

The second is the IGCSE-comfortable student. A child who scored well in IGCSE French arrives in DP1 expecting continuity and finds a steeper jump than anyone warned them about. The DP asks for sustained argument in a text type with conventions, spontaneous conversation that survives follow-up questions, and listening at a speed the IGCSE recordings did not demand. The grade does not usually fall because the student got worse; it falls because the bar moved and nobody said so out loud. This is the single most common reason a Mumbai parent types a French B search in October of DP1.

The third is the under-stretched SL student, and it is the one families least expect. A student with genuinely strong French sitting at SL is not at risk of not knowing enough. The risk is carelessness: skimming the task instruction and writing the wrong text type, answering a reading question from memory of the passage rather than from the passage, treating the oral as a conversation with a friendly adult rather than an assessed performance. These students lose marks in ones and twos across a whole paper, and a tutor's job here is largely to slow them down and make accuracy boring and automatic.

The fourth is how a second language fits a demanding Diploma at all. French B is one of six subjects sharing a timetable with the EE, TOK and three or four IAs, and it is almost always the subject a stressed DP2 student silently stops doing daily work for, because nothing is due tomorrow. That is precisely why it decays. Twenty minutes a day of listening and reading beats three hours on a Sunday, and a weekly tutor who checks that the twenty minutes happened is worth more than one who delivers brilliant content. On university requirements, treat every claim with suspicion, including a confident one from another parent in the school car park: language requirements differ by country, by institution and by course, they change, and the only reliable source is the university's own current admissions page or its admissions office. Check at source before letting a university rumour drive an HL or SL decision.

  • HL adds a literature element that reshapes the individual oral, not just hours
  • Strong IGCSE French does not predict a comfortable DP1; the bar moves
  • A strong SL student's real risk is carelessness, not missing knowledge
  • French B decays first in DP2 because nothing in it is due tomorrow
  • Twenty minutes daily beats a three-hour Sunday for listening and reading
  • University language requirements vary and change; verify at the source

What progress looks like at four weeks, one term and one exam cycle

At four weeks you should not expect a grade to have moved, and any tutor who tells you it has is reading noise. What you should see by week four is diagnostic clarity and a change in how the student talks about the subject. The tutor should be able to tell you, without notes, which component is weakest and what the mechanism of the loss is: not that the student is weak at writing, but that the student writes good French in the wrong text type, or loses the thread of a listening passage when the speaker changes. You should also see a student who can say what they are supposed to be doing between sessions, and who has done at least some of it.

By the end of a term the measurable thing is accuracy on repeated tasks. A student who could not reliably produce a past narrative should now produce one that is dull but correct. Reading answers should be located rather than guessed. Oral responses should survive one follow-up question without collapsing into English. Paper marks may improve by a band, or they may hold steady while the quality underneath them improves, which is common and not a failure: a student who has stopped making three different kinds of error is on the way even if the number has not caught up. Ask the tutor for the marked scripts and look at where the marks now go missing compared with October.

Across a full exam cycle the honest statement is that a tutor shifts probability, not outcome. A weekly French B hour held consistently from DP1 through to the May session, with daily listening behind it, puts the student in the best position the hours allow. It cannot compensate for a course that was the wrong placement, for a student who does not do the work, or for an off day in an oral recording. Progress is also not linear: most students plateau somewhere in DP2 and then move again once the oral rehearsal starts properly.

If nothing has changed after four to six weeks of actual attendance, treat it as information rather than an argument. Sometimes the mismatch is personality, sometimes it is level, sometimes the student needs a teacher who is harder on them than the current one is willing to be. Tell us, and we will put up a different shortlist with the same checks. Changing tutor once in two years is normal; changing every month is a sign that the problem is being misdiagnosed somewhere other than in the tutor.

  • Week four: a specific diagnosis and homework the student can describe
  • One term: dull but correct output, located reading answers, oral that survives follow-ups
  • Marks may lag improvement; compare marked scripts, not just totals
  • A full cycle shifts probability; placement and student effort still dominate
  • Plateaus in DP2 are normal and usually break when oral rehearsal starts
  • No change after six attended weeks is a reason to change tutor, not to wait

Getting started with a French B home tutor in Mumbai

Three things make the first session worth paying for, and all three take a parent about ten minutes to gather. The first is the most recent marked French work, including the mark scheme or criteria sheet if the school sent one, and the comment the teacher wrote even if it was two lines. The second is the school's assessment calendar for the term, so the tutor can plan backwards from real deadlines rather than from a generic scheme of work. The third is a straight answer about level: French B at Higher Level or Standard Level, and whether a change of course has been discussed with the coordinator.

The first session itself should be diagnostic, not a lesson. Expect the tutor to run a short piece of timed writing, play a listening passage at full speed and watch what happens, and have a few minutes of conversation in French about something unscripted. By the end of the hour the tutor should be able to name the weakest component, describe what the student will do between now and the next session, and say what the first month will target. If the first session ends with a general reassurance and no plan, say so before booking a second.

After that, the thing that decides the outcome is boring consistency. Pick a slot you can defend against everything except illness, and let the content move with whatever the school has set. Keep the marked work in one folder so the pattern of lost marks is visible in February. Tell the tutor when the student is drowning in EE or IA deadlines so the French hour becomes lighter that week instead of being cancelled, because a skipped week in a language costs more than a skipped week in a content subject.

One last repetition of the boundary, because it is the question parents are most awkward about asking. The tutor can teach, model, question, drill and mark. The tutor cannot write, part-write, edit into existence or supply any piece of work the student submits, and should refuse if asked. A tutor who respects that line is the one worth keeping for two years.

  • Bring the last marked French script and the teacher's written comment
  • Bring the school's term assessment calendar, in writing if possible
  • Confirm the level and whether a course change is under discussion
  • Expect session one to diagnose: timed writing, full-speed listening, free conversation
  • Fix a weekly slot you can defend, and keep marked work in one folder
  • Lighten the French hour in deadline weeks rather than cancelling it
FAQs

Mumbai tutoring — questions parents ask

Is French B right for my child, or should the school move them to ab initio?+

That is the school's decision, taken with you, and it rests on your child's actual prior French rather than on which course scores better. French B assumes several years of previous learning; ab initio assumes a genuine beginner and runs at Standard Level only. A student who has studied French through the Middle Years Programme or IGCSE will usually be placed in French B, and schools check prior learning precisely to prevent a misplacement. Ab initio is not an easier route to a high grade, since it compresses a whole language into two years. Raise the question with the languages coordinator early in DP1 with the student's prior French set out plainly.

Should we take French B at Higher Level or Standard Level?+

Decide it on the literature element rather than on hours. Higher Level French B includes literary works, and the HL individual oral is built on an extract from one of them, so it suits a student who reads willingly and analyses text comfortably. Standard Level carries the same themes without that component. A student with strong functional French who dislikes literary reading can be well placed at SL and poorly placed at HL. Ask the school what the HL reading will actually involve, look at the rest of the subject load, and make the call with the coordinator rather than from a league-table instinct.

My child did well in IGCSE French. Why has DP1 French B gone badly?+

Because the bar moved, not because the student got worse. The Diploma Programme asks for writing in a specified text type with its own conventions, conversation that survives unscripted follow-up questions, and listening at a speed and accent range the IGCSE material did not demand. A student who coasted on classroom fluency meets all three at once in the first marked term of DP1. This is the most common reason Mumbai parents start searching for a French B tutor in October. It is fixable, and it usually needs technique and exposure rather than more vocabulary.

Can a French B home tutor travel to our building in Bandra West for an evening slot?+

Usually yes, if the tutor is matched from nearby rather than across the city. Bandra West sits on the Western Line with the Western Express Highway and Link Road behind it, so a tutor from Khar West, Santacruz West or Juhu can hold a 6.30pm or 7.30pm slot through a full term. A tutor coming from Mulund or Kharghar for the same slot will eventually ask to change the day. Tell us your society's visitor protocol when you book: a standing weekly entry on the gate register saves ten minutes every week and avoids the tutor waiting at the lobby desk.

What do IB tuition fees in Mumbai depend on for a French B private tutor?+

Fees depend on five things, and we will not quote a figure that pretends otherwise. They are: the level, since Higher Level with the literature component asks more of a tutor than Standard Level; subject scarcity, and French B specialists with DP experience are a thin pool in Mumbai; travel distance and the time the commute consumes; session length and weekly frequency; and whether sessions are at home or online. A tutor crossing from Andheri to Kharghar is pricing the road as well as the hour. Ask for the rate per session and the expected number of sessions in writing before you start.

Does a parent need to be at home during home tuition sessions?+

No, but someone adult should be in the flat, and the study space matters more than supervision does. Sessions work best at a table in a room with a door, not at the dining table with the television on behind it. Keep the phone out of the room and the router reachable, since even home sessions use audio for listening practice. You do not need to sit in. A short two-minute handover at the end of the session, with the tutor saying what was covered and what the student owes before next week, is worth more than an hour of watching from the sofa.

How late in DP1 can we still change French B to another language?+

Practically, the first term of DP1, and the decision is the school's with you. Most Mumbai schools will consider a language change early in the first year and close the window well before DP2 begins, because the reading, the thematic work and the assessed oral cannot be rebuilt late. If a change is genuinely needed, write to the coordinator early, attach the evidence of prior learning or the lack of it, and ask what the deadline actually is at your school rather than assuming a general rule. Do not wait for a full set of mocks to make the case for you.

Will taking French B at Standard Level affect university applications?+

Possibly, and the only reliable answer comes from the universities themselves. Language requirements differ by country, by institution and by individual course, and they are revised. We will not tell you what any named university asks for, because a figure that was true last year may not be true for the year your child applies. Check the university's own current admissions page, or write to its admissions office, and do that before letting a car-park rumour drive an HL or SL decision. Your school's university counsellor is the other source worth more than a forum thread.

There has been no visible progress after a month. What should we do?+

Treat it as information and act on it rather than waiting another month. First check attendance and between-session work honestly, since four cancelled or half-done weeks are not a month of tuition. Then ask the tutor to name the weakest component and the mechanism of the loss; a vague answer is itself the diagnosis. Look at the marked scripts and see whether the type of error has changed even if the mark has not, which is real progress that has not surfaced yet. If none of that holds up, tell us and we will shortlist a different tutor under the same checks.

Can the tutor help with work my child has to submit?+

The tutor can teach, model, question, drill and mark it, and cannot write or supply any part of it. That is a hard line, not a preference. A tutor may explain what a text type requires, show an example of their own, mark a student's draft against the criteria and make the student redo it. A tutor may not compose sentences that go into a submitted piece, rewrite a paragraph into shape, or supply phrasing to be copied. Any tutor who offers to do that is putting your child's Diploma at risk, and you should end the arrangement.

Does online French B tutoring work for students in Navi Mumbai and Thane?+

Yes, and for some families it is the better option rather than the compromise. French B specialists with Diploma Programme experience are concentrated in the island city and the Western Suburbs, so a family in Kharghar, Panvel or Kasarvadavali may reach a materially stronger teacher online than the best option within a sane drive. Listening and reading work particularly well on screen with shared audio and annotated texts. Oral spontaneity is the real loss, which is why many of these families run one online session weekly plus a local home session for conversation and writing.

The tutor is not working out. How does a replacement happen?+

Tell us what is not working and we put up a fresh shortlist that has passed the same identity, qualification and DP teaching checks. You do not need to justify the decision at length, and you should not spend a term being polite about a mismatch. Useful detail speeds it up: too gentle, too fast, poor listening material, unreliable on Wednesdays. We will usually avoid repeating the attribute that failed. Changing tutor once across two years is ordinary. Changing every month suggests the real problem sits somewhere other than the tutor, and we will say so.

Find your Mumbai tutor

Send one message with your Mumbai locality, the level your child is taking, and two time slots that genuinely work. We check the French B pool in your zone, come back with two or three verified profiles, and arrange a diagnostic first session at home or online. After that session you keep the tutor, ask for a different option, or stop. No pressure either way.
