How IB Gram shortlists a private tutor for a Mumbai beginner in French

Requests for a French ab initio tutor in Mumbai divide almost evenly into two kinds, and they need different people. The first is a family three weeks into DP1 asking whether they have chosen correctly. The second is a family twelve months in, asking why a subject that was supposed to be straightforward has become the one everybody argues about on Sunday evening. The intake separates them immediately, because the first needs a tutor who will talk frankly about fit and then step out of the decision, and the second needs a tutor who can rebuild without making the student feel she has failed something.

Shortlisting then turns on a question that sounds odd for a tutoring platform: can this tutor tell you that your child may be in the wrong course? A tutor whose income depends on a weekly slot has an obvious reason not to raise it, which is exactly why we ask at vetting how they have handled a student who clearly had prior French. The answer we want is that they reported what they saw and sent the family to the DP coordinator. The answer that disqualifies a profile is any version of keeping quiet and teaching the easier class.

You see profiles before anyone talks about scheduling. Each one states the DP components the tutor has taught, how long they have worked with Diploma students, whether they offer home tuition, private online sessions or both, and which Mumbai zones they travel to. Nothing on a profile describes a tutor as the best IB tutor in Mumbai, because that is not a checkable claim and it is not how a one-to-one match works. What is checkable is which components someone has taught to the end and what they say they would do in the first three sessions.

The first session is a diagnosis of the situation, not a lesson. If the fit is wrong, one message changes the tutor, and the second tutor receives whatever the first produced, so the student does not narrate her own history twice. We press families to judge this in the first fortnight because a private arrangement that nobody enjoys tends to survive on politeness until February of DP2, which is the worst possible month to start again.

  • 1. Say which situation you are in: deciding on the course, or repairing it.
  • 2. We shortlist tutors vetted on whether they raise a placement concern honestly.
  • 3. You read profiles: components taught, modes offered, Mumbai zones travelled to.
  • 4. A diagnostic session reports what the tutor observes, in writing, to you.
  • 5. Placement and level questions go to your DP coordinator, with that written note.
  • 6. Wrong fit: one message, a new tutor, and the notes travel with the student.

Is French ab initio offered at one level, and who decides placement?

In most schools French ab initio runs at a single level rather than as a choice between Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL), but you must confirm that with your own Diploma Programme (DP) coordinator rather than with any website, because school offerings differ and the IB revises its course structures on its own cycle. Placement between ab initio and French B is likewise decided by the school together with the family. A tutor contributes an observation. The decision belongs to the coordinator and the language department, who hold the student's record and know the school's own practice.

The course sits in Group 2 of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, the language acquisition group, and it exists for students with no meaningful prior study of French. In Mumbai that typically means a student who did Hindi, Marathi or Sanskrit through the Middle Years Programme (MYP) or at IGCSE and then met French for the first time in DP1. French B is built for students who already read, write and speak some French before the Diploma begins.

A beginner language also has to fit a Diploma that is already demanding. Six subjects, the Extended Essay (EE), Theory of Knowledge (TOK), creativity, activity and service commitments, and Internal Assessment (IA) deadlines across every other subject. French ab initio is not the subject that generates the most deadlines, and that is precisely its danger: a subject with no visible due date gets no time, and a language with no time decays. Students who come through it comfortably are the ones who gave it twenty minutes most days rather than two hours most Sundays, and that pattern is set in the first term or not at all.

The honest framing for a family weighing it up is this. A genuine beginner who will put in small daily contact, and who has the room in her week to do it, is well served by French ab initio. A student who is choosing it because a beginner course sounds lighter than Economics or a second science has misread what two years of compressed language learning involves. A French ab initio IB Diploma Programme (DP), Years 1-2 tutor Mumbai parents consult early can describe that realistically, which is more useful in week three of DP1 than any amount of teaching in month fourteen.

  • Most schools offer French ab initio at one level: confirm with your DP coordinator
  • Group 2 language acquisition, for students with no meaningful prior French
  • French B is the course for students who already read and speak some French
  • Placement is the school's decision, taken with the family, not a tutor's
  • A subject with no visible deadline is the one that quietly loses its time
  • Twenty minutes most days beats two hours on a Sunday for a beginner

What do the three components ask of someone who started in June?

They ask for production, not recognition, which is the gap most families underestimate. French ab initio is assessed through Paper 1 writing, Paper 2 listening and reading, and the individual oral. A student who started with no French in June of DP1 will be asked to write text for a stated audience, to follow speech she has not seen written down, and to talk continuously about an image in a recorded conversation. Confirm the current format through your school, since the IB updates its subject guides independently of anything published here.

Paper 1 is the component where the beginner's position is most favourable, because the criteria are written in the knowledge that a two-year beginner's accuracy will be partial. What it demands instead is the right kind of text for the right reader, which is a learnable discipline rather than a question of linguistic maturity. Paper 2 is less forgiving in a different way: reading rewards precision and punishes guessing from English-looking words, and listening exposes whatever exposure the student has or has not had outside the classroom.

The individual oral is the component that surprises families, because it is the one where a confident student can underperform and a shy one can do well. It is built around a visual stimulus and the prescribed themes of identities, experiences, human ingenuity, social organisation and sharing the planet. Continuity carries it. A student who produces a minute of connected, imperfect French about a photograph is in a stronger position than one who offers four polished sentences and then stops, because stopping is what the criteria notice.

One boundary applies to every component and it is not negotiable. A private tutor may teach, demonstrate, run practice and mark practice work without limit. A private tutor may not write, draft, correct into final form or supply any part of what the student hands to her school as her own work, and a tutor who offers that is creating an academic honesty problem rather than solving an academic one. Ask about it on the trial call. The useful answer comes immediately and without hedging.

  • Paper 1: written text produced for a stated audience and purpose
  • Paper 2: reading rewards precision, listening exposes real-world exposure
  • Individual oral: a recorded conversation built from a visual stimulus
  • Themes: identities, experiences, human ingenuity, social organisation, sharing the planet
  • The criteria expect partial accuracy from a two-year beginner
  • A tutor teaches and marks; never writes or supplies part of a submission

Private tuition and home classes across the six Mumbai zones

A one-to-one arrangement lives or dies on whether the slot is sustainable, which in this city is a question about geography rather than enthusiasm. In South Mumbai, families in Cuffe Parade, Marine Lines, Girgaon, Mahalaxmi, Prabhadevi and Lower Parel are matched within the island almost always, because a tutor brought down from the suburbs for a weekday evening will quietly renegotiate the arrangement by the second month. Distances are small; the Peddar Road and Haji Ali signals in the evening peak are not. Metro Line 3 and the Coastal Road have improved specific journeys without improving the 6pm hour in general.

The Western Suburbs stretch north along the Western Line and the Western Express Highway, so the viable pairings are short ones: Khar West with Santacruz, Juhu with Versova, Jogeshwari West with Goregaon West, Borivali West with Dahisar. Metro Lines 2A and 7 have made some of those journeys dependable where they were not, and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link brings an island tutor into Bandra and no further. In the Central Suburbs the awkward node is Powai, with Hiranandani Gardens and Chandivali hanging off the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) and no station of their own, reached by road from Andheri East, Ghatkopar East or Kanjurmarg, while Sion, Kurla and Mulund East sit on the Central Line and are simpler to staff.

The Eastern Suburbs run from Wadala and Chembur through Govandi and Mankhurd up to Bhandup West, served by the Central and Harbour lines, the Eastern Express Highway, the Monorail and the Eastern Freeway, which makes a Chembur tutor genuinely viable in the island city. Navi Mumbai is a chain of nodes, Airoli, Ghansoli, Kopar Khairane, Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar and Panvel, joined by Palm Beach Road, the Sion-Panvel Highway, the Trans-Harbour Line and the Navi Mumbai Metro from Belapur to Pendhar. The Atal Setu has changed the weekend map across the harbour. It has not made a Tuesday evening island-to-Panvel lesson last a full term, and a tutor who agrees to one is being optimistic.

Thane runs west to east from Thane West across Manpada, Kolshet Road and Majiwada out along Ghodbunder Road to Hiranandani Estate, Owale and Kasarvadavali, with the Thane-Borivali tunnel corridor eventually changing the western connection. Ghodbunder dictates the timetable: twenty minutes off-peak, close to an hour in the evening peak. For families out there, the sustainable version of an IB DP French ab initio private tutor in Mumbai is usually a weekend in-person session plus private online sessions midweek, and the families who insist on three weekday visits are the ones changing tutors in October.

  • South Mumbai: Cuffe Parade, Marine Lines, Girgaon, Mahalaxmi, Prabhadevi, Lower Parel
  • Western Suburbs: Khar West, Juhu, Versova, Jogeshwari West, Goregaon West, Borivali West
  • Central Suburbs: Powai, Hiranandani Gardens, Chandivali, Sion, Kurla, Mulund East
  • Eastern Suburbs: Wadala, Chembur, Govandi, Mankhurd, Bhandup West
  • Navi Mumbai: Airoli, Ghansoli, Kopar Khairane, Vashi, Nerul, Kharghar, Panvel
  • Thane: Thane West, Manpada, Kolshet Road, Hiranandani Estate, Owale, Kasarvadavali

How do Mumbai schools handle the DP1 subject change window?

Every school sets its own window, and the practical point is that it is short and it is early. In Mumbai, Maharashtra the IB year opens in June, and most schools will consider a subject or course change in the first weeks of DP1 while timetables are still being settled and before internal assessment has begun. After that the door closes, because a student who switches later has to cover a year of a different syllabus in whatever time is left. So a family with a genuine doubt about French ab initio has a decision to make in roughly the first month, not in the first term, and the only way to know your own deadline is to ask the DP coordinator directly, in writing, in June.

This is the single best reason to bring in a private tutor early rather than when marks go wrong. Three or four diagnostic sessions in the first fortnight produce something a coordinator can use: a written observation of what the student can already do, how quickly she absorbs new sound-to-spelling patterns, and whether she is in fact a beginner. A family who arrives at the coordinator with that is having a different conversation from one who arrives with a worry. Families at Dhirubhai Ambani International School and Ascend International School in the Bandra Kurla Complex, Jamnabai Narsee International School and Ecole Mondiale World School in Juhu, Oberoi International School off JVLR, Cathedral and John Connon School at Fort, Bombay International School at Babulnath, Aditya Birla World Academy at Tardeo, Hiranandani Foundation School in Powai, Thakur International School in Kandivali East, NES International School in Mulund West, Singapore International School in Dahisar East and D.Y. Patil International School in Nerul all work to different internal dates, so none of this can be read off a general calendar.

IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with any school named on this page, with the IB organisation, or with any language-certification body. Schools are listed only so that a parent can identify the calendar their own family is living in. We do not have a view on any school's placement practice and would be wrong to offer one.

After the window shuts, the useful question changes from whether the course is right to how to make it work. That means accepting the course, protecting a small daily slot for it through the October and November IA collision, and planning for the DP2 stretch from November to February when the individual oral is being recorded alongside EE deadlines and mocks. A private arrangement is well suited to this because one-to-one timing can flex around a school's internal dates in a way that a fixed group batch never can.

  • Most change windows sit in the first weeks of DP1 and then close
  • Ask your DP coordinator in writing in June what your school's deadline is
  • Three or four early diagnostic sessions give a coordinator something concrete
  • October and November DP1: protect a small daily French slot through the IA collision
  • November to February DP2: oral recording, EE deadlines and mocks overlap
  • IB Gram is not affiliated with any school named on this page

Home classes, private online sessions, or both across Mumbai?

Home tutoring is the default on IB Gram and for a one-to-one arrangement it has advantages that are hard to replicate. An IB home tutor in Mumbai sees the actual workspace, the actual notebook and the actual level of chaos, and in a family where the real problem is that French has no fixed place in the week, that observation is the intervention. Many families book IB home tuition in Mumbai precisely because the tutor's arrival at a fixed hour is what creates the habit the student would not create herself.

Private online sessions earn their place on two grounds. Scarcity is the first: people who have taught a beginner French syllabus through to the oral are not spread evenly across this city, and insisting on someone who can reach Mahalaxmi at 6.30pm may mean choosing the fifth best available teacher over the first. Frequency is the second: a beginner language wants short, frequent contact, and nobody travels across Mumbai for thirty-five minutes on a Wednesday. An IB online tutor in Mumbai can hold two short midweek slots that no in-person arrangement will sustain past October.

The trade-offs are genuine and worth naming before you choose. Online loses the ability to watch a student write by hand under time, which matters because the written papers are handwritten. It loses the incidental information a tutor picks up from the room. It is also more vulnerable to a quiet student going quieter, which in a language subject is not a minor problem. Home classes lose frequency and cost travel time that eventually appears in the rate, and in far Navi Mumbai or along Ghodbunder Road they lose reliability in the evening peak.

Which is why the hybrid shape is the one to ask for by name rather than defaulting into. French ab initio home classes Mumbai families book at the weekend give the longer in-person session for handwritten work and face-to-face speaking, while two short private online slots midweek carry listening and speaking. A home tutor for French ab initio Mumbai parents can realistically reach, plus an online slot, is a better arrangement than either mode alone, and it is cheaper than two long in-person sessions a week. Choose on the basis of your child's weakest habit, not on which mode sounds more serious. An IB DP French ab initio private tutor in Mumbai will usually propose that split themselves if you describe the week honestly, and an IB private tutor Mumbai families book without describing the week ends up holding a slot nobody can keep.

  • Home tuition creates the fixed weekly habit a beginner language needs
  • A home tutor sees the real workspace, notebook and organisation
  • Private online sessions widen access to a scarce beginner-French specialism
  • Online sustains the short midweek frequency in-person slots cannot
  • Online cannot watch handwriting under time, and a quiet student goes quieter
  • Hybrid: a longer weekend home session plus two short online slots

What a private tutor in Mumbai is checked on, and what you should check

IB Gram verifies identity, the subject and component history a tutor claims, and their teaching record with Diploma-age students before a profile appears. For this subject there is an extra question at vetting about placement honesty, because a private tutor who will not tell a family that their child seems to have prior French is a commercial risk to that family. An IB DP French ab initio private tutor in Mumbai should be able to describe the difference between a genuine beginner and a student with buried prior exposure, and say what they would do about it, which is report it and point the family at the coordinator.

Your own checks are quick and need no French. In a trial session, time how long the student speaks: in a beginner one-to-one hour it should be most of it, and if the tutor is talking for forty minutes you are paying for a lecture. Ask what the tutor would do if the student turned out to have studied French for three years at a previous school. Ask how they record corrections and whether the student can reopen that record later in the week. Ask what they do with work the school is marking, and expect a clear line without hedging.

Be wary of a tutor who promises a specific grade, particularly in a subject the student began this year. IB Gram does not guarantee grades, and a one-to-one arrangement is not a mechanism for producing a number. The honest equivalent is a description of what the student will be able to do by a named month, which you can verify yourself by asking her to do it. Searching IB tutors near me Mumbai will return plenty of confident claims; the ones worth your time describe capabilities with dates on them.

One more check that families skip. Ask the tutor what they will not help with. University language requirements are a common trap: they differ by institution and by country, they change between admission cycles, and a tutor who recites one from memory is guessing with your child's planning. The correct answer is that you read the requirement on the university's own admissions pages, in the year you are applying, and that nobody at a tutoring platform should be your source for it.

  • Identity, component history and Diploma teaching record checked before a profile goes live
  • Extra vetting question: how the tutor handles a suspected placement mismatch
  • In a one-to-one beginner hour, the student should speak for most of it
  • Ask how corrections are recorded and whether she can reopen them midweek
  • Be wary of a tutor who promises a specific grade in a first-year language
  • University language requirements vary by institution and cycle: read them at source

Four students in a Mumbai French ab initio class, and who the course is for

The first is the student the course was designed for. She came through the MYP or IGCSE with Hindi or Marathi, met French for the first time in June of DP1, and knows roughly nothing. She finds the first weeks strange because the sounds do not map onto the spelling the way she expects, and then she settles. For her the course does what it says: two years, three components, from zero to a recorded conversation. Nearly everything useful a private tutor does for her is pacing, correction and keeping a small daily contact habit alive through the months when other subjects shout louder.

The second has real prior French and should probably not be in an ab initio class. Three years at a school in Dubai or Singapore, or a primary school in Mumbai that taught French from a young age, and a family who assumed the beginner label meant a clean restart. She will be comfortable for a term and then bored, and boredom in a language class produces carelessness rather than high marks. This is not something a tutor fixes or decides. It is a placement question for the school and the family, and the tutor's only job is to report what they see in writing, early, while a change is still administratively possible.

The third has made the most common and most expensive misjudgement: she chose a beginner course because it sounded like the lightest sixth subject available. What she meets is two years of compressed learning in which vocabulary, three assessment components and a recorded oral arrive on a fixed schedule whether or not she has kept up. The failure mode is specific and predictable. French is the subject with no deadline, so it receives no time; by the second term of DP1 she is behind in a way that is hard to see from a report card, and by DP2 she is trying to build a language from almost nothing while writing an EE. A private tutor brought in at that point can repair a great deal, but the repair is a grind and it should be described as one rather than sold as a rescue.

The fourth hears French at home from a parent or grandparent and has never studied it. She can follow a conversation and cannot write a sentence, which is a genuinely awkward profile for any language course and another matter for the coordinator rather than for a tutor or a website. French is spoken across Europe, across West and North Africa, in the Caribbean and across Canada, and every one of those varieties is legitimate French with its own vocabulary and rhythm, so a student with family exposure to any of them has a real asset and not a problem to be corrected. What she usually needs from an IB DP French ab initio private tutor in Mumbai is literacy work: spelling, written structure, and reading at length, while her speaking takes care of itself. The general point across all four is that ab initio is a course with a specific purpose, not a difficulty setting, and the honest answer to who it is for is narrower than most families assume in June.

  • Student one: a genuine beginner from an MYP or IGCSE Hindi or Marathi background
  • Student two: real prior French, a placement question for the school and family
  • Student three: chose it as the light subject, meets two years of compressed learning
  • Student three's failure mode: no deadline, so no time, visible only by DP2
  • Student four: family exposure to spoken French but no literacy at all
  • Ab initio is a course with a purpose, not a difficulty setting

Honest expectations for a beginner language on a demanding Diploma

At four weeks, the thing to look for is whether French has a place in the week. Not progress, not marks: a place. A beginner four sessions in should be reading unfamiliar short words aloud roughly correctly, producing a few sentences about herself unprompted, and doing something small with French on days when there is no session. If none of that is true after a month, the problem is the schedule rather than the teaching, and it will not fix itself when the term gets busier.

At one term you can check three things without speaking any French. Can she talk about a photograph for a minute, continuously and badly? Can she tell you what kind of text a writing task is asking for? Does she have a record of her own repeated mistakes that she actually opens? A student who can do all three in October of DP1 is in good shape. A student who can recite vocabulary and do none of the three has been studying French rather than learning it, which is a distinction that shows up sharply at the first proper assessment.

At one exam cycle, read the components separately. Reading is usually the strongest, listening the weakest, and in a city where a student hears no French outside her classroom a modest listening result after one year is ordinary. The useful question at that point is not whether the mark is good but whether the trajectory is believable: is she getting more of each clip than she was in December, and is the error record shorter in the places it used to be long? Those are answerable; a projected final grade is not.

The limits are worth saying without decoration. IB Gram does not guarantee grades. A private tutor cannot create the small daily contact that a beginner language runs on, cannot change a school's placement decision, and cannot compress two years of language into one term however many sessions are booked. What one-to-one teaching reliably provides is a method, honest reporting, marked practice and someone who notices the specific thing going wrong while it is still cheap to fix. For a family deciding in June, that honest reporting is worth more than any amount of teaching bought in month fourteen.

  • Four weeks: French has a fixed place in the week, or the schedule is the problem
  • One term: a continuous minute on a photograph, badly, counts as success
  • One term: she can name the text type a writing task asks for
  • One exam cycle: judge the trajectory of each component, not a projected grade
  • A modest first listening mark is ordinary for a Mumbai beginner
  • IB Gram does not guarantee grades and cannot compress two years into one term

Starting with an IB DP French ab initio private tutor in Mumbai

Have four things ready. The school and the DP year. An honest account of any prior French, including a primary school that taught it for two years and a grandparent who speaks it at home, because this is the single most useful fact and the one families most often soften. Whatever the school has issued so far. And the real weekday evenings, with the slots already taken by other tuition and the school bus marked off, since the arrangement has to survive a Mumbai Tuesday in March and not just a Saturday in June.

The first session is a diagnosis. The tutor checks sound-to-spelling recall on unfamiliar words, finds out how much of a short clip survives one listen, asks the student to say a few things about her own week, and looks at whatever the school has set. You should receive a short written observation afterwards: what the student can already do, how she is absorbing new patterns, and whether anything suggests she is not a beginner. If the last point is flagged, that note goes to your DP coordinator and the decision is theirs with you.

After that it is ordinary one-to-one work. A standing weekly slot, often a longer in-person session plus a short private online one midweek through DP1, reviewed at four weeks and again at the end of each term against the written plan rather than against a feeling. An IB tutor Mumbai parents keep across both years is worth more than a stronger tutor available for one term, because continuity in a language built from zero is most of the value. Changing a tutor early is cheap. Changing one in February of DP2 is not.

On fees, this page will not invent a figure, because tutors set their own and a fabricated range would be useless to you. What IB tuition fees in Mumbai depend on is clear enough to plan around: board and level, how scarce the specialism is, session length and frequency, whether the tutor travels to your home and how far, and whether marking between sessions sits inside or outside the hour. Beginner French is a narrow specialism here, so it tends to price above a widely taught subject at the same level, and a weekday evening journey to Kharghar, Panvel or Kasarvadavali is priced into the hour. Ask each shortlisted tutor in writing before you book anything.

  • Have ready: school, DP year, honest prior French history, school materials, real evenings
  • First session: sound recall, one listening check, a few spoken sentences, school work
  • You get a short written observation, including any placement concern
  • Placement and level questions go from you to your DP coordinator
  • Usual shape: a weekly in-person session plus a short private online slot midweek
  • Ask each tutor for their own fee in writing before the first session
FAQs

Mumbai tutoring — questions parents ask

Who is French ab initio actually designed for?+

Anyone searching for an IB DP French ab initio private tutor in Mumbai should start here: the course is for a student with no meaningful prior study of French, which in Mumbai usually means someone who did Hindi, Marathi or Sanskrit through the MYP or at IGCSE and met French for the first time in DP1. It is a beginner course, not a lighter version of French B, and the distinction matters because the two years are tightly packed. If your child has studied French before at any school, or reads and writes any of it already, raise that with the DP coordinator before the course settles rather than after the first assessment.

My son did three years of French at a school abroad. Can he still take ab initio?+

That is a decision for the school, taken with you, and it should be raised immediately rather than after a term. Prior study of that length is exactly the profile ab initio is not built for, and the usual outcome for such a student is comfort for one term followed by boredom and careless mistakes. A tutor can give you a written observation of what he can already do, which is useful evidence for the conversation, but no tutor and no platform should be adjudicating the placement. Ask your DP coordinator what their practice is and what their change deadline is.

Is French ab initio the easiest way to pick up marks in Group 2?+

No, and that assumption is the most expensive one a DP1 family makes. The course asks a student who knew nothing in June to produce written text for a stated audience, follow unscripted speech and hold a recorded conversation, inside two years that also carry the EE, TOK and five other subjects. Because French ab initio generates few visible deadlines of its own, it is the subject that silently loses its time, and the damage is usually invisible until DP2. Choose it because the student wants a language from scratch, not because it sounds lighter than the alternatives.

Which level is French ab initio offered at?+

In most schools it runs at a single level rather than as an HL or SL choice, but you must confirm that with your own DP coordinator rather than relying on any website. School offerings differ, and the IB revises course structures on its own cycle, so a figure or a structure published anywhere outside your school's current documentation can be out of date for the year your child sits. The same applies to the number of components and anything resembling a weighting: read your school's issued subject documents and ask the coordinator directly where anything is unclear.

How late in DP1 can a subject or course be changed?+

Earlier than most families expect, and the deadline is set by the school rather than by the IB. Most schools consider changes in the first weeks of DP1 while timetables are still settling and before internal assessment begins; after that, switching means covering a year of a different syllabus in whatever time remains. Ask your DP coordinator in writing, in June, what your school's window is. If you have a real doubt about French ab initio, that is the month to get a diagnostic observation from a tutor, not December.

Can a private tutor travel to our building in Lower Parel for an evening session?+

Yes, Lower Parel and Prabhadevi are reasonably well served because tutors can reach them from Worli, Parel and Mahalaxmi without crossing the worst signals. The constraint is the hour. A 7pm start through the Senapati Bapat Marg stretch costs real time in both directions and narrows the shortlist considerably, while a 5pm or weekend slot widens it. Many South Mumbai families settle on one longer in-person session at a weekend hour plus a short private online slot midweek, which protects the frequency a beginner language needs without betting the arrangement on traffic.

Do we need a parent at home for a private one-to-one session?+

For the first few weeks, within earshot rather than in the room. You are not assessing the French, you are checking the shape of the hour: whether the student is speaking for most of it, and whether the session is being conducted in French or drifting into English. After a month, once there is a correction record you can look at and a between-session habit that is actually happening, you can step back. For online sessions the same applies, with the extra point that the door should stay open while a beginner is still monosyllabic.

Is society gate access or parking a problem for a weekly tutor in Navi Mumbai?+

It is a one-time administrative step in most complexes, but settle it before the first session. Societies in Airoli, Ghansoli, Kopar Khairane, Vashi and Kharghar will usually register a recurring visitor against a flat on a resident's request, with a name, an identity number and the slot timing, which saves an argument at the gate every week. Visitor parking varies a great deal between older and newer complexes, so ask where the tutor should park. Where recurring visitors are not permitted, families use the clubhouse study room if there is one, or move midweek sessions online.

How does a language fit into an already demanding Diploma timetable?+

By getting small and frequent rather than long and occasional. A beginner language is the one Diploma subject where twenty minutes most days clearly beats two hours on a Sunday, because retention is the constraint and not comprehension. In practice that means French gets a fixed daily slot, however short, and the weekly tutoring session becomes correction and direction rather than the only contact. Families who treat French as the subject to be done after everything else is finished are the ones for whom it becomes a DP2 problem, since it generates no deadline to force the issue.

Does the tutor decide whether our daughter is a genuine beginner?+

No. A tutor observes and reports; the school decides, with you. What a good private tutor gives you after three or four sessions is a written description of what she can already do, how quickly she maps sounds onto spelling, and whether anything looks like buried prior learning. That is evidence a DP coordinator can use. A tutor who tells you confidently which course your child belongs in has overstepped, and a tutor who notices prior French and says nothing because the easier class is easier to teach is worse. We ask about exactly that at vetting.

Will French ab initio be enough for university language requirements?+

That depends entirely on the institution and the country, and it changes between admission cycles, so read the requirement on the university's own admissions pages in the year you are applying. Nobody at a tutoring platform should be your source for it, and a tutor who recites a particular university's requirement from memory is guessing with your child's planning. If language study is part of a specific plan, raise it with your school's university counsellor early in DP1, while the subject change window is still open, rather than discovering a mismatch during application season.

Can one-to-one home classes fix a year of lost ground in DP2?+

Partly, and the honest word for the process is grind rather than rescue. What recovers quickly is technique: text types, reading precision, how to use the time before listening audio. What does not recover quickly is vocabulary, because there is no shortcut to the daily contact that was missed. So a realistic DP2 repair concentrates on converting whatever French the student actually has into marks, and sets expectations against that rather than against what a student who kept up would score. IB Gram does not guarantee grades, and a tutor promising to recover a full year is not being straight with you.
