How IB Gram matches an IB DP Film private tutor in Mumbai

A good share of the enquiries that reach us about this subject are not really requests for tuition. They are a parent trying to work out whether their child has chosen well, usually in the weeks after DP1 subject selection, often after a conversation at home that did not go anywhere. We treat that as a legitimate reason to book a tutor and we say so, because one hour with somebody who has taught the course is a cheaper way to answer the question than two years of finding out.

So the first thing we ask is what the hour is for. If the answer is a decision, we shortlist differently: we want someone who has seen students succeed and fail at this subject and will say which pattern your child resembles, rather than someone who will be encouraging. If the answer is ongoing home tuition, we ask the usual things. DP1 or DP2, Higher Level (HL) or Standard Level (SL), which school, what the teacher has already said, which component is live, and which two evenings are genuinely free once the rest of the week is counted.

You then get two or three profiles with real teaching history on them, not descriptions. An IB DP Film private tutor in Mumbai is a narrow search, so we would rather widen the geography or suggest online than widen the definition of a Film specialist. You speak to each shortlisted tutor briefly, and one trial session happens at home or on a shared screen. For a decision-focused booking, that session should end with the tutor saying something you can act on, including the possibility that the honest advice is to change subject while there is still time.

IB Gram is an independent platform, not affiliated with any school named on this page or with the International Baccalaureate organisation, and we do not guarantee grades. If no Film specialist can reach your address for a weekly slot, we will tell you that in the first reply rather than three weeks in.

  • 1. Tell us whether the hour is for a decision or for ongoing tuition.
  • 2. Give the year, level, school and what the Film teacher has said.
  • 3. We shortlist on DP Film teaching history across the Mumbai pool.
  • 4. A ten-minute call each, then one trial session at home or online.
  • 5. A decision session ends with advice you can act on this term.
  • 6. Replace the tutor at any point, with no negotiation about it.

HL or SL Film, and what each costs in a Mumbai week

Film is an arts subject in the IB Diploma Programme (DP), taken over Years 1-2 of the DP at Higher Level (HL) or Standard Level (SL). Both levels combine written analytical work with the student's own film production and its documentation. HL adds a project made collaboratively with other Film students, in which each student is accountable for a defined role. The exact components, their names and their structure follow the subject guide in force for a given cohort, so the school's DP coordinator is the only source worth trusting on this year's requirements.

The level decision is usually framed as how much the student likes the subject, which is the wrong axis. The right axis is time, and specifically weekend time. Production work consumes it in blocks, not in hours: a shoot is a Saturday, not forty minutes before dinner. At HL the collaborative project adds a second kind of time cost, because the student is now dependent on classmates' availability as well as their own. A Film IB Diploma Programme (DP), Years 1-2 tutor Mumbai parents consult before the level is fixed will usually ask what else is on the timetable before answering.

That interaction with the rest of the Diploma is what families misjudge most. Film beside two sciences and HL Mathematics is a different proposition from Film beside Economics, a language and Visual Arts, and the difference is not the difficulty of Film. It is that the subjects with heavy continuous assessment all want the same weekends. A student taking Film, an internal assessment-heavy science and an Extended Essay they have left late will find that three deadlines all want the October to December window, and the one that slips will be the one that needs other people, which is Film.

The practical advice we give, which no tutor can give you until they know the full timetable, is to map the whole two years once at the start of DP1, on one page, marking every assessed deadline across all six subjects plus the Extended Essay (EE) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK). Film students who have done that map make different and better choices about scope. Students who have not tend to discover the collision in December of DP2.

  • Production time arrives in weekend blocks, not in weekday half-hours
  • HL adds classmates' availability as a constraint on your child's deadline
  • Film beside two sciences competes for the same weekends, not the same evenings
  • Map all six subjects plus the EE and TOK on one page in DP1
  • Confirm the level deadline and this year's structure with the DP coordinator

Which students does Diploma Programme Film actually suit?

Students who want to make things and are willing to write about them, and who can finish. The course rewards organisation and precision at least as much as creative instinct. The three profiles that struggle are predictable: the student who watches a great deal and assumes the course is watching, the student who wants to direct and has not understood how much of the work is written, and the student who starts well and cannot finish anything.

Take the first. A teenager who watches constantly arrives with genuine advantages: references, instincts, a sense of what good looks like. The course then asks them to analyse precisely, produce under constraint and document their reasoning, none of which follows automatically from watching. Our Film tutor page deals with that gap in depth. For a subject-choice conversation the relevant question is narrower and a tutor can answer it in one session: when this student watches something, can they say anything specific about how it was made, or only whether it was good. If only the second, the subject is still possible and it will be a longer climb than they expect.

The second profile is the one that causes real unhappiness, because the student is motivated and the disappointment is structural. A student who wants to direct imagines two years of directing. What they get is substantial written analysis, a documented account of their own decisions, comparative work on films they did not choose, and one or two pieces of production that are smaller than anything in their head. None of that is a reason to avoid the subject. It is a reason to know before choosing, and an hour with a private tutor who shows them what the written work looks like is the cheapest possible preview.

The third profile is the quiet one. Film punishes non-finishers more than any other subject on the Diploma, because a half-finished piece of production work cannot be partially submitted in any useful way, and the deadline cannot be rescued by a weekend of revision. A student who regularly hands work in late in other subjects will find Film harder, not because the content is difficult but because the failure mode is total. If that is your child, the honest conversation is about whether structure can be built around them, and a weekly IB private tutor Mumbai families engage from DP1, usually as home classes, is one of the few structures that reliably works.

  • Suits students who make things, write about them, and finish them
  • Watching widely is an advantage and is not the same as analysing
  • Wanting to direct is not wanting to write, and most output is written
  • Non-finishers struggle hardest, because production cannot be partly submitted
  • An hour with a specialist previews the written work before the choice is fixed
  • Weekly one-to-one structure is the fix that works for a late-handing student

Private Film tutors and home classes across Mumbai's six zones

This subject has a thin specialist pool, and the realistic question in each part of Mumbai is not who is the strongest tutor but who can hold a weekly home tuition slot at your address for two years. We match inside zones for that reason. Parents who search IB tutors near me Mumbai and expect a dozen Film options are measuring the wrong thing; for a scarce subject, the right radius is a zone and sometimes a screen.

The Eastern Suburbs are a good illustration. Chembur, Govandi, Wadala, Vikhroli, Bhandup and Mulund sit on the Central and Harbour lines with the Eastern Express Highway running through them, and the Eastern Freeway plus the Chembur to Wadala monorail make South Mumbai far closer than the map suggests. A tutor living in Chembur can hold a South Mumbai slot and a Mulund slot in the same week, which is unusual in this city. That flexibility is why Eastern Suburbs families often have more real choice of a Film specialist than their counterparts further north, and it is worth knowing before you assume you have none.

The Western Suburbs carry the largest Diploma cohort in Mumbai, Maharashtra, covering Bandra, Khar West, Santacruz, Juhu, Andheri, Versova, Oshiwara, Goregaon East, Malad, Kandivali, Borivali and Dahisar. Matching works along the Western Line, Metro Line 1 from Versova through Andheri to Ghatkopar, Metro Lines 2A and 7 from Dahisar to Gundavali, the Western Express Highway and Link Road, and it fails across them at 6pm. Thane is the opposite case: from the station the city runs east along Pokhran Road, Majiwada and Hiranandani Estate out to Kasarvadavali on Ghodbunder Road, where a twenty-minute off-peak run becomes nearly an hour in the evening, so Thane tutors cover Thane and Mulund tutors sometimes cross on the Eastern Express Highway.

South Mumbai, meaning Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Churchgate, Fort, Walkeshwar, Babulnath, Tardeo, Peddar Road and Worli, is served by the Western Line into Churchgate, the Harbour Line through Dockyard and Sewri, Metro Line 3 from Cuffe Parade towards BKC, the Sea Link at its southern end and the Coastal Road, and tutors are matched within the island rather than brought down from the suburbs. The Central Suburbs run from Kurla through Ghatkopar, Kanjurmarg and Vikhroli to Mulund with Powai and Chandivali reached by road off JVLR and the SCLR, since Powai has no station. Navi Mumbai works node to node across Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar, Panvel and Airoli, linked by Palm Beach Road, the Sion-Panvel Highway, the Harbour and Trans-Harbour lines, the Belapur to Pendhar Metro and the Atal Setu. An IB DP Film private tutor in Mumbai based on the island will take a Belapur booking for a term and then quietly stop, so we do not arrange them.

  • Eastern Suburbs: Chembur, Govandi, Wadala, Bhandup, Mulund, unusually flexible
  • Western Suburbs: Bandra, Khar West, Juhu, Andheri, Malad, Borivali along the line
  • Thane: Pokhran Road, Majiwada, Hiranandani Estate, Kasarvadavali beyond the traffic
  • South Mumbai: Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Walkeshwar, Tardeo, Worli, matched on the island
  • Central Suburbs: Powai, Chandivali, Ghatkopar, Kanjurmarg, road access only
  • Navi Mumbai: Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar, Panvel, Airoli, node to node

When can a Mumbai student still change out of Film?

Early in DP1, and the window is set by your school rather than by anything universal. Schools run their own subject-change deadlines inside the registration timetable, so the only reliable answer comes from your DP coordinator, asked directly and early. What is universal is that the window closes well before the student has finished enough of the course to be certain, which is why the decision is usually made on incomplete information.

Families here attend Dhirubhai Ambani International School, the American School of Bombay and Ascend International School in BKC, Ecole Mondiale World School, Jamnabai Narsee International School and Utpal Shanghvi Global School in Juhu, Oberoi International School at JVLR, Hiranandani Foundation School in Powai, B.D. Somani International School in Cuffe Parade, Cathedral and John Connon School in Fort, Bombay International School at Babulnath, Aditya Birla World Academy in Tardeo, JBCN International School at Parel, Borivali, Oshiwara and Chembur, NES International School in Mulund West, Thakur International School in Kandivali East, Ryan Global School at Kandivali and Worli, Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania School in Thane and D.Y. Patil International School in Nerul. That is local context only, and IB Gram has no relationship with any of them.

What happens to production work already begun is the part nobody warns families about. If a student leaves Film after starting a piece, that work does not transfer anywhere. The hours spent are not recoverable and, more awkwardly, the student joins a new subject whose own continuous assessment is already underway, usually a term in. So the change is not free even when it is right, and the cost rises steeply the longer the decision takes. A student considering a move in the first few weeks of DP1 is in a very different position from one considering it after the first holidays.

The Mumbai calendar sharpens this. The academic year opens in June into the monsoon, which is when a wavering Film student has the least to do and the most doubt, since exterior shooting is off and the course feels abstract. Internal examinations and the Diwali break follow in October and November. Our advice to parents in that June to August stretch is to get one honest assessment from someone who has taught the course rather than letting the doubt run until the window closes. An hour costs an hour.

  • Subject-change deadlines are set by your school, so ask the DP coordinator
  • The window closes before anyone can be certain, by design
  • Production work already begun does not transfer and is not recoverable
  • A new subject is joined with its continuous assessment already underway
  • June to August is when doubt peaks, and when an honest assessment is cheapest

One-to-one home tuition, online or hybrid for Film in Mumbai?

For a decision session, either works and online is usually faster to arrange. For ongoing work, home tuition is the stronger default in DP1 and hybrid is what most families run by DP2. The deciding factor is rarely the subject. It is whether your child works when nobody is in the room.

One-to-one home classes do something a group cannot, and in this subject the difference is sharper than in most. Film students in a class are all making different things, so a group session is necessarily general, while the student's actual problems are entirely specific: this scope, this location, this paragraph, this cut. A home tutor for Film Mumbai parents book weekly is buying attention on one project. They are also buying somebody who notices that the student's laptop cannot play their own footage smoothly, or that the room they planned to shoot in faces a main road, neither of which comes up on a call.

Online is the right choice when geography makes a weekly home slot unrealistic, which in this subject is a large part of Navi Mumbai, outer Thane and the far north of the Western Suburbs. An IB online tutor in Mumbai can run the written work, the planning and the review of cuts perfectly well, and our Film online tutor page covers the detail of how and the honest limits. For a subject-choice conversation specifically, online is often better, because you can get a specialist on a call within days rather than waiting for a slot to open in your area.

Hybrid settles most two-year arrangements: weekly one-to-one at home for the drafting, planning and supervision, with online sessions added during production months and substituted during the monsoon, when a tutor crossing the Western Express Highway or Ghodbunder Road may simply not arrive. We will say which mode suits your address and your child, and we will say when a weekly home commute is not going to hold. A tutor who agrees to an unrealistic travel pattern is agreeing to cancel on you in November.

  • Group Film classes are general; one-to-one is specific to this student's project
  • A tutor in the room spots the slow laptop and the noisy room
  • Online suits far Navi Mumbai, outer Thane and the northern Western Suburbs
  • For a subject-choice session, online is usually the faster booking
  • Hybrid by DP2: home weekly, online added in production months
  • An unrealistic travel pattern is a cancellation scheduled for November

Checking a private Film tutor in Mumbai before you commit two years

Identity, qualifications and teaching history are verified before any profile is sent, whether you are booking a one-off session or a weekly home tutor: which boards, which subjects, which levels and across what period. For Film we ask the specific question of whether the tutor has taught the Diploma Programme course, has examined or moderated it, or has taught film at some other level entirely, because those are three different things and you should know which one you are hiring. Someone found informally may be excellent and will simply not have been checked.

For a subject-choice booking there is one additional thing to verify, and it is about honesty rather than credentials. Ask the tutor directly: have you ever advised a family that Film was the wrong choice, and what did you say. A tutor who has taught this course for several cohorts has done it. A tutor who answers that any motivated student can succeed is either inexperienced or selling, and in a decision session that costs you the whole value of the hour. An IB DP Film private tutor in Mumbai who can describe a student they advised away from the subject is the one to book.

Ask what they will not do, and listen for the production boundary without prompting. A tutor may teach craft and may critique a cut. A tutor may never shoot, edit or write any part of a submission, including documentation and written responses. Ask too how they handle locations and permissions: the right answer is that filming locations, equipment, safety and the involvement of anyone else go through the school's process, and that the student should not be arranging a shoot independently. The same goes for music, footage and images, which are cleared or credited under the school's rules.

Be wary of a tutor who promises a specific grade, and be wary of anyone who talks about this subject mainly as a route to something else. IB Gram does not guarantee grades. What a good tutor sells is a clearer picture and better work, and in a decision session the most valuable outcome is sometimes advice that costs them the booking.

  • Identity, qualifications and DP Film teaching history verified before shortlisting
  • Ask whether they have ever advised a family against taking Film
  • A tutor teaches craft and critiques a cut, and never shoots, edits or writes
  • Locations, equipment, safety and other people go through the school's process
  • Music, footage and images are cleared or credited under school rules
  • Be wary of a tutor who promises a specific grade

What Mumbai families misjudge about Film before choosing it

Five things, consistently, and all of them are knowable in advance. The proportion of the course that is writing. The way production time arrives in weekend blocks. The real equipment position. What a film school conversation does and does not require. And how early the subject-change window closes relative to when anybody feels sure.

Start with the equipment misjudgement, because it runs in both directions. Some families assume the subject needs a serious camera and budget for one. It does not: capable work is routinely made on a recent phone with a cheap tripod, a basic external microphone and free editing software, and what is assessed is the thinking and the control rather than the hardware. Other families assume a phone is sufficient for everything and are surprised by what they end up needing: somewhere quiet to record, somebody to hold a light, a machine that can actually play back and cut the footage without stalling. The real costs in this subject are quiet space, time and other people. A Film tutor in Mumbai who has taught several cohorts will tell you which of those your household is short of after one visit.

The time cost is the one that produces resentment later. Production does not fit into the ninety-minute slots that the rest of the Diploma trains families to expect. A single sequence might need a Saturday morning for setup and shooting and two evenings of cutting, and at Higher Level the collaborative work means coordinating several families' weekends. Households in Mumbai where weekends already carry a sport, a music class and extended family obligations should look at the calendar honestly before choosing Film rather than after. This is not an argument against the subject. It is an argument for knowing what has to give.

Then the film school conversation, which comes up in a majority of these enquiries and deserves a careful answer. What institutions ask for differs from institution to institution and changes over time, so the only reliable source is each institution's own admissions information, checked directly and recently. Nobody should be making a Diploma subject choice on a second-hand account of what some film programme is believed to want. What we can say generally is that the decision is usually less binary than families fear, and that the DP subject choice is one input among several. Check each place directly, write down what each actually says, and make the subject decision from that rather than from a conversation at a dinner.

The fourth misjudgement is about the HL and SL choice, which families often treat as a signal of seriousness rather than a workload decision. Taking Film at Higher Level because it demonstrates commitment, while carrying two science subjects at HL as well, is a scheduling choice dressed up as an ambition. The collaborative element in particular depends on classmates, which means a student with a demanding timetable is importing other people's reliability into their own deadlines. A tutor who knows the course will ask what else is at HL before offering an opinion, and will treat an answer of three heavy subjects plus Film as a reason to think again rather than as a detail.

The last one is timing, and it is the most fixable. The doubt that leads families to this page usually arrives in the first months of DP1, and the subject-change window set by the school closes during that same period. Waiting for certainty guarantees that the window shuts first. The useful move is to book one honest session early, with somebody who has taught the course, with the explicit brief of assessing fit rather than teaching. A tutor who understands the assignment will spend that hour showing the student what the written work actually looks like, asking them to attempt a short piece of it, and then telling you both plainly what they saw.

  • A phone, a tripod, a basic microphone and free software are genuinely enough
  • The scarce resources are quiet space, weekend time and other people
  • Production time arrives in weekend blocks the Diploma has not trained you for
  • Film school requirements vary by institution and must be checked directly there
  • HL is a workload decision, not a signal of seriousness
  • Book the honest assessment early, because the change window closes first

Is Film a risk if my child wants to study it further?

It is a subject choice, not a commitment, and the honest answer is that it depends on where they apply and what that place asks for. Requirements differ by institution and change, so check each one directly rather than relying on what anyone believes to be true. What Diploma Programme Film reliably builds is the ability to analyse precisely, plan under constraint and finish, and those travel well whatever the student studies next.

On progress from weekly home tuition itself, the pattern in this subject is consistent. At four weeks you should see a clearer plan, a smaller scope and the beginnings of precise vocabulary. At one term, written drafts marked against the criteria, a production schedule with real dates, and a student who can say what their own work is doing rather than what it is about. Across two years, planning and writing improve dependably and finishing improves most of all, which for many students is the single largest change.

What no one controls is the mark. It depends on the student's own work, on their school teaching, on the examiners they draw and on performance in a particular session. IB Gram does not guarantee grades, and no honest tutor offers a guaranteed grade. A private tutor who talks about outcomes in terms of numbers before meeting your child is describing a sales process rather than a teaching plan.

There is a limit specific to this page's question that deserves stating. A tutor can tell you whether a student is well suited to the Diploma Programme Film course. A tutor cannot tell you whether your child should pursue film as a career, and should not try. Those are different questions with different evidence, and a sixteen-year-old's performance in one Diploma subject is weak evidence for the second. The useful thing a tutor can do is make the next two years go well and keep the later decision open.

  • Further-study requirements vary by institution and must be checked directly
  • Four weeks: a smaller scope, a clearer plan, more precise vocabulary
  • One term: marked drafts, a dated production schedule, better self-description
  • Two years: planning, writing and finishing improve; a mark is never promised
  • A tutor assesses fit for the course, not fitness for a career
  • Numbers promised before meeting your child are a sales process

Deciding about Film in Mumbai: one home tuition session of questions

If you are here to decide rather than to start weekly tuition, book a single session and say that is what it is for. Bring three things: the student's current subject list with levels marked, anything they have already made or written for Film, and an honest account of what their weekends already contain. That last item sounds irrelevant and is the one that most often changes the advice.

Expect the session to be uncomfortable in a productive way. A tutor doing this properly will show the student a short extract and ask them to write about it for ten minutes, then read what they wrote in front of them. They will ask what the student imagines the course is, and then describe what it is. They will ask about finishing: what was the last thing you started and did not complete, and why. By the end, you should have a direct answer about fit, and a sentence about what would have to be true for this to work.

If you are starting ongoing tuition instead, the same first session doubles as a diagnostic and ends with a six-week plan and a named first weakness. Weekly one-to-one home classes then do the unglamorous work: scope control, the writing cycle, the production calendar, and somebody asking every week what has actually moved. The tutor teaches craft and critiques the work. The student makes every part of the submission themselves, and locations, equipment, safety, other people and copyright all go through the school.

Settle logistics in week one either way. The evening and length, the room, whether your society needs a standing visitor entry arranged in advance, and what happens when a session is missed for rain or an examination. Film home classes Mumbai families sustain for two years are the ones where the slot was realistic from the start, and where somebody was willing to say in week one that a 6pm Tuesday across the city was never going to happen.

  • Book one session explicitly for the decision, and say so when you write
  • Bring the subject list with levels, any existing work, and the weekend picture
  • Expect ten minutes of writing and a direct reading of it
  • Leave with an answer on fit and what would have to be true
  • Ongoing tuition starts with a named weakness and a six-week plan
  • Agree the slot, the room, gate entry and the missed-session rule immediately
FAQs

Mumbai tutoring — questions parents ask

Can a private tutor tell us whether our child should take Film at all?+

A good one can give you a clear, evidenced opinion in a single session, and that is a legitimate reason to book. Tell us upfront that the hour is for a decision, because we shortlist differently for it: you want someone who has watched several cohorts succeed and fail at this subject, not someone who will be encouraging. The session should involve the student attempting a short piece of the actual written work rather than discussing films, because how they handle that is the evidence. Ask the tutor directly whether they have ever advised a family against the subject.

My child wants to direct. Will Film give them that?+

Partly, and less than they are picturing. Diploma Programme Film includes the student's own production work, so they will direct something, but a large share of the assessed output is written: close analysis, comparative work, documentation of their own decisions, and at Higher Level an account of their individual role. A student expecting two years of directing is usually disappointed by the end of the first term, which is structural rather than anyone's fault. Showing them what the written components look like before the subject choice is fixed is the cheapest way to avoid that, and it takes about an hour.

What does Film cost in equipment, and what do we need at home?+

No camera purchase is necessary, and buying one is rarely the best use of the money. A recent phone, an inexpensive tripod, a basic external microphone and free editing software are enough to produce work that reads well against the criteria, because what is assessed is the thinking and the control rather than the hardware. The costs that do bite are a machine that can play back and cut footage without stalling, somewhere quiet enough to record dialogue, and other people's time. If your household is short on quiet space, that matters more than any kit decision.

Can a tutor travel to our building in Chembur or Mulund for an evening session?+

Usually yes, and the Eastern Suburbs are better served than families there expect. Chembur, Govandi, Wadala, Vikhroli, Bhandup and Mulund sit on the Central and Harbour lines with the Eastern Express Highway running through, and the Eastern Freeway makes the island city unusually close, so a tutor based here can hold slots in two directions in one week. Mulund also connects to Thane on the Eastern Express Highway, which widens the pool further. Tell us your building, the free evenings and the latest start time you would accept, and we will say what that realistically opens up.

How much weekend time does Film take, and will it affect other subjects?+

More than the Diploma trains you to expect, and in blocks rather than hours. A single sequence can take a Saturday morning to set up and shoot plus two evenings to cut, and at Higher Level the collaborative work means coordinating several families' weekends. The collision to watch for is October to December of DP2, when Film deadlines, science internal assessments and the Extended Essay all want the same weeks, and the one that slips is always the one needing other people. Map every deadline across all six subjects on one page at the start of DP1.

Does taking Film help with film school applications?+

It depends entirely on the institution, and that is the only honest answer anyone can give you. Requirements differ from one place to another and change over time, so check each institution's own admissions information directly and recently rather than relying on a second-hand account. What the Diploma Programme Film course reliably develops is precise analysis, planning under constraint and the ability to finish a project, and those are useful whatever the student goes on to study. Make the subject decision from what each place actually publishes, written down, rather than from a conversation at a family dinner.

Should my child take Film at Higher Level or Standard Level?+

Decide it as a workload question rather than a seriousness question. Higher Level adds a collaborative project made with other Film students, which means classmates' availability becomes part of your child's deadline, on top of the extra depth. The decisive input is what else is at Higher Level: Film plus two heavy science subjects is a scheduling problem regardless of how much your child enjoys the course. A tutor who knows the Diploma will ask for the full timetable before offering a view, and should be willing to recommend Standard Level if the rest of the week is already full.

Can we still change out of Film, and what happens to the work already done?+

The window is set by your school within the registration timetable, so ask the DP coordinator directly and early. What matters practically is that production work already begun does not transfer anywhere, those hours are not recoverable, and the student joins a new subject with its continuous assessment already underway. The cost of changing rises steeply week by week, which is why a wavering student is better served by one honest assessment in the first months of DP1 than by waiting for certainty. Certainty tends to arrive after the window has closed.

What do IB tuition fees in Mumbai depend on for a private Film tutor?+

IB tuition fees in Mumbai depend on level, subject scarcity, session length, travel distance and the tutor's specialisation, and Film pushes several of those upward. A tutor who has actually taught or examined the Diploma Programme course is scarce, and one crossing a zone for a weekly evening slot either prices the travel in or declines the booking. A one-off decision session is usually arranged differently from ongoing weekly work. We publish no figures because an honest range would be too wide to be useful, so ask each shortlisted tutor directly what their rate assumes.

Is one-to-one home tuition better than a group class for this subject?+

Yes, more clearly than in most subjects, because every Film student is making something different. A group session has to stay general while the student's real problems are entirely specific: this scope, this location, this paragraph, this cut. One-to-one home classes also let the tutor work on the student's own drafts against the criteria rather than on shared examples. The exception is viewing: watching and discussing unfamiliar films works perfectly well in a group, and some schools run that anyway. For the assessed work, individual attention is what moves it.

Our child is disorganised. Can a weekly tutor actually fix that?+

A tutor cannot change a temperament, and weekly home tuition can build a structure that works around one, which in this subject matters more than usual. Film punishes non-finishers harder than other Diploma subjects, since a half-finished production cannot be usefully submitted and no weekend of revision rescues it. What a weekly one-to-one arrangement provides is a fixed point: somebody asking every seven days what moved, a dated plan working backwards from the deadline, and a scope small enough to be finishable. Parents should expect the tutor to reduce ambition deliberately in the first month, and should back that rather than resist it.

What if we book a tutor and the fit is wrong?+

Tell us and we replace them, with no argument. For decision-focused bookings the usual mismatch is tone: the family wanted a straight assessment and got encouragement. For ongoing work it is usually specialism, where the tutor is strong on analysis and weak on practical planning or the reverse. One specific example of what is not landing lets us pick a different profile deliberately rather than at random. Everything produced so far, including marked drafts and the production plan, belongs to the student, so a replacement starts from where the work actually is.

Find your Mumbai tutor

Write to us with the student's year, the full subject list with levels, and whether you want one session to decide or weekly tuition. We shortlist Film specialists on teaching history and on whether they can genuinely reach you, then send two or three profiles with a note on each. A decision session ends with a direct answer on fit. Ongoing tuition starts with a named weakness and a six-week plan. If no specialist can reach your address weekly, we will tell you straight away.
