How IB Gram matches an Extended Essay research tutor in Mumbai

Most families reach us at the point where the Extended Essay has stopped being an idea and become a problem. The subject is chosen, the supervisor has been appointed by the school, and the student has three weeks of notes that do not add up to an answerable question. What that student needs is not a writer. She needs someone who sits beside her for an hour a week and teaches the research method the essay is actually assessed on, then leaves her to do the reading.

The matching runs in a fixed order. 1. You tell us the essay subject, the year group, your locality and the date your school has set for the next supervised reflection. 2. We shortlist tutors whose own degree subject matches the essay subject and whose weekly availability fits the slot you named, not the slot we wish you had named. 3. You receive each tutor's subject background, research experience and realistic travel radius, and you speak to two of them before anything is booked. 4. The first session is diagnostic: the tutor reads what already exists, asks the student to explain the question out loud without notes, and helps her write a research plan she then executes alone. 5. If the fit is wrong after two sessions, tell us and we rematch.

On the shortlisting call we ask three questions that decide the match. Which subject is the essay in, because a History essay and a Biology essay fail for completely different reasons at the research stage. How far into the reading is the student, because someone with no sources needs a different first session from someone with forty saved PDFs and no notes. And what has the school already said, because a supervisor's written comment is the single most useful thing you can forward us before the first session.

One boundary is set before any tutor is booked, and it does not move. A tutor may teach research skills, question a draft the student has written, and mark that draft against the published criteria so the student knows where it stands. A tutor may never write, redraft, research for, or produce any part of an Extended Essay. The student signs the essay as her own work, so it has to be her own work. IB Gram will not take on an enquiry framed as producing or fixing a submission, and we say so on the first call rather than after we have taken a booking.

  • Shortlist built on degree subject match, not general IB experience
  • You name the weekly slot before we name a tutor
  • First session is diagnostic and produces a written research plan
  • Forward the supervisor's last written comment before session one
  • We rematch if the fit is wrong after two sessions

Where the Extended Essay sits in the Diploma Programme

The Extended Essay (EE) is one of the core requirements of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP), sitting alongside Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and the creativity, activity, service strand. It is an independent piece of research in a subject the student chooses, written over a long stretch of DP1 and finished in DP2, and it is supervised inside the school by a teacher the school appoints. Nobody outside the school replaces that supervisor, and a tutor working with your child does not contact the school.

Because the essay is independent, the research phase is the part of it that is genuinely unsupervised in practice. A student gets scheduled reflection sessions with her supervisor and a Reflections on Planning and Progress Form to complete, and between those sessions she is on her own with a reading list she has to build herself. That gap is where a tutor is legitimately useful, and it is also where families get into trouble, because the easiest way to close a gap in reading is to let somebody else do it.

Word limits, submission dates and the exact structure of the supervised reflections are set in the current subject guide and by your school's DP coordinator, and the IB revises its guides on its own cycle. We will not quote those details to you from memory. Ask your coordinator for the version that applies to your child's session, then build the schedule backwards from it. A tutor who tells you the requirements without checking which guide is current is guessing.

An Extended Essay (EE) IB Diploma Programme (DP), Years 1-2 tutor Mumbai families book for a standing weekly slot is usually brought in during DP1, when the question is still movable. Bringing someone in during the last fortnight of DP2 is a different and much worse conversation, and it is one we have most weeks. At that stage the honest options are narrow, legitimate and unglamorous, and we will say so.

  • Core component alongside Theory of Knowledge and the service strand
  • Supervisor is appointed by the school and never replaced by a tutor
  • Reflections on Planning and Progress Form is completed by the student
  • Word limit and dates come from the current subject guide
  • DP1 is the right term to start; late DP2 limits honest options

Choosing a subject, then building a question the evidence can answer

Subject choice decides how hard the research will be, and most students choose on affection rather than on feasibility. A student who loves Economics but has no access to firm-level data will spend two months failing to find numbers. A student who picks Biology and wants fieldwork needs a site she can reach on a Saturday morning from Chembur or Kandivali East, not a coral reef. The first useful thing a tutor does is make the student test her subject choice against what she can actually read, reach and measure from where she lives.

The research question comes second and matters more. Broad questions feel safe and are the commonest reason an essay reads thin: a question about the effects of colonialism on Indian textiles has no boundary, while a question about how one mill's output was recorded across two specific decades has one. A tutor's job here is to press on scope until the question is narrow enough that evidence exists for it, and then to check that the evidence is in a language the student reads and a format she can cite.

The published criteria reward focus and method, subject knowledge, critical thinking, presentation, and the engagement a student shows in her reflections. Almost all of those are decided during research, not during writing. A student who kept a dated log of searches, dead ends and decisions can write a reflection that sounds like a researcher. A student who read for six weeks without recording anything has to reconstruct it, and reconstruction reads exactly like reconstruction to an examiner.

A tutor can model all of this on a different topic. He can show the student how he would narrow a question in his own field, how he would judge a source he had not seen before, and how he would record a citation. He may not do any of it on her topic, because that would be research for her essay. The line is simple to hold once it is stated out loud: the method is taught, the work is hers, and the essay she signs is the one she wrote.

  • Test subject choice against reachable sources before committing
  • Narrow the question until evidence demonstrably exists for it
  • Check the evidence is in a language and format the student can cite
  • Most criteria are decided during research, not during drafting
  • A tutor models method on his own topic, never on the student's

Mumbai home tuition coverage, zone by zone

An IB DP extended essay home tutor in Mumbai is matched by zone, because a research tutor who cannot reliably arrive at the same hour each week is worse than useless on a project that runs for a year. In South Mumbai we match inside the island: Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Fort, Churchgate, Worli, Babulnath, Peddar Road and Tardeo. It is a short-distance zone that moves slowly, and the Fort and Kala Ghoda end of it happens to be where the city's older research libraries sit, which matters more on this page than on any other.

The Western Suburbs run along the Western Line and the Western Express Highway, and matching along that axis works while matching across it does not. We cover Bandra, Khar West, Santacruz West, Juhu, Andheri, Goregaon East, Malad, Kandivali East, Borivali and Dahisar East, with Metro Lines 2A and 7 making a Dahisar to Andheri tutor viable in a way the road alone never was. In the Central Suburbs, Powai and Chandivali hang off the JVLR with no station of their own, so tutors reach them by road from Andheri East, Kanjurmarg or Ghatkopar; Kurla and Ghatkopar sit on the Central Line itself.

The Eastern Suburbs stretch from Chembur and Govandi through Vikhroli and Bhandup to Mulund, on the Central and Harbour lines and the Eastern Express Highway, with the Eastern Freeway and the Monorail from Chembur to Wadala making the island closer than the map suggests. Navi Mumbai is matched node to node across Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar and Panvel, along Palm Beach Road and the Sion-Panvel Highway; the Atal Setu has changed what is possible from the island, though we still rarely pull a tutor across the creek for a weekday evening. Thane runs from the station out along Pokhran Road and Ghodbunder Road through Majiwada to Kasarvadavali, where the Ghodbunder stretch alone can add forty minutes after six.

The research angle changes the emphasis per zone. A student in Fort or Churchgate can plan an afternoon in a reading room and be home for a 7pm session. A student in Kasarvadavali or Panvel realistically does her source work online and uses contact time for judgement, not retrieval. So the same subject, the same question and the same tutor produce a different weekly plan in Colaba and in Kharghar, and the plan should say which.

  • South Mumbai matched inside the island: Worli, Babulnath, Cuffe Parade, Fort
  • Western Suburbs matched along the line, Khar West to Dahisar East
  • Powai and Chandivali reached by road off the JVLR, no local station
  • Navi Mumbai matched node to node: Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar, Panvel
  • Thane schedules built around the Ghodbunder Road evening peak

How do Mumbai school EE deadlines fall across the year?

Mumbai IB schools set their own internal Extended Essay milestones inside the IB's outer deadline, and those internal dates are what actually govern your term. Typically a subject and a draft question are fixed late in DP1, a first full draft is wanted before or just after the DP1 to DP2 break, and the final submission lands in DP2 alongside Internal Assessments and mock examinations. Your school's DP coordinator publishes the real calendar; everything a tutor plans should be pinned to it rather than to a general assumption.

Families we work with attend Dhirubhai Ambani International School and the American School of Bombay in Bandra Kurla Complex, Ecole Mondiale World School in Juhu, Oberoi International School off the JVLR, B.D. Somani International School at Cuffe Parade, Cathedral and John Connon School in Fort, Bombay International School at Babulnath, Aditya Birla World Academy in Tardeo, Hiranandani Foundation School in Powai, NES International School in Mulund West, JBCN International School in Chembur, Singapore International School in Dahisar East, Thakur International School in Kandivali East and D.Y. Patil International School in Nerul. Naming them is context about the calendar pressure you are under. IB Gram is an independent platform, not affiliated with any school named here and not affiliated with the International Baccalaureate organisation.

The pressure point that catches most Mumbai students is not the final deadline. It is the first full draft, because it usually falls in the same six weeks as two Internal Assessment drafts and the TOK essay, and it is the first time the thinness of the research shows. A student who did her reading properly across DP1 writes that draft in a fortnight. A student who did not spends the fortnight reading instead, and then has no time to write.

The monsoon weeks between June and September are the other quiet problem. Sessions get cancelled, a tutor coming from Ghatkopar to Powai loses an hour to standing water on the JVLR, and a project with no fixed weekly slot simply stops. We plan a makeup rule into the schedule at the start of the term instead of improvising one in August.

  • Internal school milestones, not the IB outer date, govern your term
  • First full draft is the real pressure point, not final submission
  • Draft weeks usually collide with IA drafts and the TOK essay
  • Monsoon cancellations stall long projects without a makeup rule
  • Pin every plan to the coordinator's published calendar

Home classes, online sessions, or a mix for EE research?

Home is the default and we lead with it. An IB DP extended essay home tutor in Mumbai sits at the same table as the student, can see the pile of printouts, the half-filled log and the browser tabs, and can stop a bad search habit in the moment it happens. For a student who has drifted, physical presence is also a commitment device: somebody is arriving at seven on Thursday whether or not the reading is done. Home tuition in Mumbai costs travel time, so the slot has to be geographically honest or it lapses by week six.

Online suits the parts of this project that are screen work. Searching a database, checking whether a journal article is accessible, formatting a reference, reading a student's own notes back to her: all of that works as well on a shared screen as in a room, and an IB online tutor in Mumbai can be matched on subject rather than on postcode, which matters when the essay is in a subject with few specialists in the city. The trade-off is attention. A fifteen-year-old alone in a bedroom with a shared screen is easier to lose than one at the dining table.

The mix most of our EE families settle on is a fortnightly home session for the hard conversations and a short online check-in in the alternate week to keep the log moving. Whether you book Extended Essay (EE) home classes Mumbai tutors travel to, or online sessions, or both, the structure of the work is the same: the student reads between sessions, brings what she found, and defends her choices. Nothing about the mode changes what a tutor may do.

It changes what a tutor can be tempted to do, though, which is worth saying plainly. Online work puts a tutor's cursor near the student's document, and a tutor who starts typing in that file has crossed the line even if the words are small. Our rule in both modes is that the student holds the keyboard. A tutor may ask a question against a paragraph, name the criterion it is failing, and say nothing more until the student has rewritten it herself.

  • Home sessions catch bad search habits as they happen
  • Online widens the subject pool when specialists are scarce locally
  • Fortnightly home plus a short online check-in suits long projects
  • The student holds the keyboard in every mode, without exception
  • A geographically dishonest slot lapses by about week six

How are IB DP Extended Essay home tutors in Mumbai checked?

Before a tutor appears on a shortlist we check three things: identity, subject credential, and whether the person has actually supervised or examined research at this level rather than only taught the subject. For an Extended Essay the third matters most, because a strong Chemistry teacher is not automatically someone who can tell a student that her question has no obtainable data. An IB DP extended essay home tutor in Mumbai who cannot describe how he would narrow a question in his own field does not get listed.

We also ask every tutor to state the boundary back to us in his own words before his first booking. If the answer includes any version of writing a section, supplying a reference list, or cleaning up a draft on the student's behalf, the application stops there. The permitted work is teaching skills, questioning what the student has written, and marking her draft against the published criteria so she can see where she stands. Producing text is not on the list in any form.

There is a parallel list of things you should check yourself, and it takes one conversation. Ask the tutor which subject he studied and at what level. Ask him what he would do in the first session if your child arrived with no sources at all. Ask him how he records what the student did between sessions. Then ask him directly what he will not do, and listen for whether the boundary comes out as a clear rule or as a vague reassurance. Be wary of anyone who promises a specific grade, and be wary of anyone who offers to take a look at the draft and send it back improved. IB Gram does not guarantee grades and no honest tutor will either.

Keep the paperwork light but real. We ask families to confirm the weekly slot in writing, to note cancellations as they happen, and to tell us at four weeks whether the student is doing more of the work than she was at the start. That last question is the only reliable measure of whether the help is the legitimate kind.

  • Identity, subject credential, and research supervision experience checked
  • Tutors state the never-write boundary in their own words before listing
  • Ask what the tutor would do with a student who has no sources
  • Be wary of an offer to improve a draft and send it back
  • At four weeks, check the student is doing more of the work

Finding sources a Mumbai student can actually reach

This is the phase where Extended Essays are won or lost, and it is almost never the phase families ask about. Start with what the student already has: the school library, which in most Mumbai IB schools includes subscription databases a student can reach with her own login and which she has usually never opened. A tutor's first legitimate job is to sit with her while she logs in, searches badly, and is shown why the search was bad. Teaching the search is the work. Running the search for her is not.

Beyond school, the city has public and university reading collections, and the honest advice is to find out what access exists rather than to assume. The older research libraries around Fort and Kala Ghoda hold material that is not online at all, and some university departments allow supervised reading on application; both are worth a phone call before an afternoon trip from Powai or Thane. Open-access routes matter more for most students: a subject-specific open repository, a national open archive, a government statistics portal, or the author's own institutional page. When a key article is paywalled, the legitimate moves are to look for an author-deposited version, to check whether an open repository holds the accepted manuscript, to write to the author and ask, or to decide the essay does not need that article. Paying for a single article is a last resort and rarely necessary.

Judging quality is harder than finding things, because the student is new to the field and has no instinct for who is credible in it. We teach a short set of checks she can apply herself: who published it and does that publisher review what it prints, when was it written and has the field moved, what evidence does it cite, and who cites it. A tutor can walk through those checks on a source in his own subject and then hand her three sources in hers to judge out loud. She reaches the verdict. He says whether her reasoning holds.

Two habits save the whole project. First, record the full reference at the moment you first open a source, in the format your school requires, with the page you took the idea from. Reconstructing citations in the last week is where honest students accidentally become dishonest ones, because a half-remembered source gets cited from memory. Second, keep a dated research log: what you searched, what you found, what you rejected and why. The log feeds the reflections directly, and it gives the student something true to say about her own thinking. It also tells you when to change course. If three weeks of competent searching has produced no evidence, the question is wrong, not the student, and a tutor who says so in week five has saved her the essay. A home tutor for Extended Essay (EE) Mumbai students book in DP1 has time to make that call; one booked in DP2 does not.

  • Start with the school library's own databases and the student's login
  • Phone ahead before an afternoon trip to a Fort reading room
  • Paywalled key source: author version, open repository, email the author
  • Judge a source on publisher, date, evidence cited and who cites it
  • Record the full reference the first time you open a source

What a tutor will never do, and what progress looks like

It is worth repeating the boundary in the plainest terms available, because this is a search people make for the wrong reason. A tutor may teach research and writing skills, ask hard questions about a draft the student has produced, and mark that draft against the published criteria. A tutor may never write, redraft, research for, or produce any part of an Extended Essay. The student submits it as her own work and signs a declaration to that effect. If AI tools are used at any stage, their use is declared under the school's own rules, and the student is the one who declares it. IB Gram will not accept work framed as producing or fixing a submission, whatever the deadline is.

Within those limits, here is what to expect. At four weeks the visible change is organisational rather than textual: there is a research log with dates in it, a reference list that was built as she read, and a question that is narrower than the one she started with. She can also explain to you, without notes, why two sources she found are better than three she rejected. If none of that is true at four weeks, something is wrong and we would rather hear from you than not.

At one term the question is settled, the reading is largely done, and she has an outline that maps evidence to each section. By one full exam cycle, the essay is a finished piece of work she can defend in a viva-style conversation with her supervisor, and the skills have spread: students who learn to log and cite properly for the Extended Essay stop losing marks on Internal Assessments for the same reasons. The grade itself depends on her work, her school's teaching and the examiner's judgement, and we do not guarantee grades.

Our honest limits are worth stating too. A tutor cannot manufacture evidence that does not exist for a question the student will not give up. He cannot replace six months of reading in three weeks. He cannot sit the viva. And if a family's real request turns out to be that someone else produce the essay, there is no version of our service that meets it, which is a better thing to hear from us in week one than from a school in week forty.

  • Skills taught, drafts questioned, criteria applied; nothing written for her
  • Four weeks: a dated log, a built reference list, a narrower question
  • One term: reading done, outline mapping evidence to each section
  • AI use declared by the student under the school's own rules
  • No tutor can replace six months of reading in three weeks

Starting with an IB home tutor in Mumbai

Getting started takes one message and about ten minutes of preparation on your side. Tell us the essay subject, whether your child is in DP1 or DP2, your locality and the two weekly slots that genuinely work in your household. Then send three things if they exist: the research question as currently written, the supervisor's most recent written comment, and a list of whatever sources the student has so far, even if it is four links and a screenshot. Families searching for IB tutors near me Mumbai usually have the first and none of the rest, which is fine.

The first session is ninety minutes and it is diagnostic. The tutor asks the student to explain the question aloud, looks at what she has read, and finds out whether the problem is the question, the sources, the note-taking or the drift. He then writes a one-page research plan: what to search, where, in what order, and what to bring next week. The student leaves with homework that is reading and logging, not writing. You get the same plan by email so you know what was agreed.

If you want to compare before committing, ask for two profiles and speak to both. The questions that separate a research tutor from a subject teacher are narrow: how do you narrow a question, how do you handle a paywalled source, and what will you refuse to do. A good tutor answers the third one fastest. Whether you end up booking IB home tuition in Mumbai, online sessions, or a fortnightly mix, the first session looks the same.

What we will not do is take a booking that is really a request for someone to produce an essay. If the enquiry arrives the week before submission asking for a tidy-up, we will tell you what is legitimately possible in that window, which is usually proofreading advice the student applies herself and a frank conversation about the declaration she has to sign. An IB private tutor Mumbai parents hire for the last seven days cannot fix a year of missing research, and anyone who says otherwise is selling you a risk to your child's diploma.

  • Send subject, year, locality and two slots that genuinely work
  • Forward the research question and the supervisor's last comment
  • First session is ninety minutes, diagnostic, ends in a written plan
  • Ask two tutors what they will refuse to do, and compare
  • Late enquiries get an honest answer, not a tidy-up service
FAQs

Mumbai tutoring — questions parents ask

What exactly will an Extended Essay tutor do, and what will they not do?+

A tutor teaches method, questions your child's own draft, and marks it against the published criteria; a tutor never writes, redrafts, researches for, or produces any part of the essay. In practice that means showing her how to search a database, how to judge whether a source is credible, how to log what she did, and how to read her own paragraph against a criterion. It does not mean supplying sources, drafting a paragraph to show her how, or rewriting her introduction. She signs the essay as her own work, so it has to be hers.

My daughter has asked for help to finish and polish her Extended Essay before the deadline. Will you do that?+

No. We will not finish, polish, rewrite or research an Extended Essay, and we do not take bookings framed that way. What we will do in that window is read nothing and ask her to talk us through what she has, teach her how to check her own referencing and formatting against her school's requirements, show her how to read each section against the relevant criterion so she can cut and fix it herself, and help her plan the hours she has left. Every edit is typed by her. If what is wanted is text produced by someone else, we are the wrong service and we will say so on the call.

Can a tutor travel to our building in Kharghar for a weekday evening slot?+

Usually yes, if the tutor is matched inside Navi Mumbai rather than brought across the creek. Kharghar sits a short drive from Belapur and Panvel along the Sion-Panvel Highway, so a Navi Mumbai tutor holds a 7pm slot through a full term without difficulty. A tutor travelling from Bandra or Powai for the same slot will manage it in September and quietly start cancelling by November. We would rather match you node to node and keep the weekly rhythm, because a research project collapses when the sessions become irregular.

What does a tutor need from our society gate for a standing weekly home slot?+

A standing entry authorisation, arranged once rather than negotiated every week. Most Mumbai societies will add a recurring visitor to the register if a resident requests it in writing, and some ask for a photo identity record at the main gate. Give us the tutor's name as it appears on his identity document when you book so the two match, and tell us whether your building needs the resident to approve each entry through an app. Ten minutes of paperwork in week one prevents the twenty-minute delay that eats a quarter of a session in week nine.

Where should home sessions happen if the flat has no quiet study space?+

Anywhere with a table, a plug point and a door, which is usually the dining table after the kitchen has quietened down rather than a shared bedroom. Extended Essay work needs space to spread printouts and a screen open at the same time, so a desk the student cannot physically fit her reading onto is a real problem. Many Mumbai societies have a reading room or clubhouse table that residents can book; several of our Powai and Thane families use one for the first hour. Agree the room before the tutor arrives, not at the door.

What do IB tuition fees in Mumbai depend on for Extended Essay work?+

Mostly on the scarcity of the subject, the tutor's research credential, how far he travels and how long the session runs. An essay in a widely taught subject is easier to staff than one in a niche subject where the city has few specialists, and that scarcity shows up in the rate. Travel distance matters because a tutor crossing a zone is billing an hour of his evening he cannot bill to anyone else. Session length and frequency are yours to set. We quote per match rather than publishing a list, because a figure that fits Colaba and Panvel equally is a figure that fits neither.

How do we get a source when the key article is behind a paywall?+

Try four things in order before paying for anything. Check whether the author has deposited an accepted version in an open repository or on an institutional page; search the title for an open-access copy of the same manuscript; email the author directly, which works more often than students expect and is entirely legitimate; and check whether your school library's subscriptions already include the journal. If none of that works, the honest question is whether the essay genuinely needs that article. Often the answer is no, and a reachable source answers the same point.

Does the tutor speak to our school's Extended Essay supervisor?+

No. The supervisor is appointed by the school, owns the supervised reflection sessions and the official record of them, and a tutor neither replaces that relationship nor contacts the school. What a tutor does instead is make sure the student arrives at each reflection session able to say something true about her own progress. If the supervisor has written a comment, forward it to us and the tutor will work with it, but every message back to the school comes from your child or from you.

There has been no visible progress after a month. What should we do?+

Tell us that week rather than at the end of the term. At four weeks the progress on an Extended Essay is not supposed to look like pages of text, so first check the right markers: is there a dated research log, has the reference list grown as she read, and has the question narrowed? If those three are missing, the sessions are not working and we rematch. If they are present and you were expecting prose, the project is probably on track and the expectation needs adjusting rather than the tutor.

What happens if the tutor is not working out?+

Message us and we rematch, and you are not expected to justify it at length. The commonest reason an Extended Essay match fails is subject distance: the tutor knows the subject broadly but has never done research in the corner of it the student has chosen, so his questions stay general. The second commonest is pace. We ask what specifically did not work, because that answer changes the shortlist, then we send fresh profiles. Nothing about a rematch goes to the school, and your child's supervisor relationship is unaffected.

Is the research question allowed to change halfway through?+

Yes, and it often should, though the decision belongs to the student with her supervisor. If several weeks of competent searching has produced no usable evidence, the problem is the question, and narrowing or shifting it in DP1 costs far less than defending a thin essay in DP2. A tutor's role is to notice the pattern early and make the student articulate it: what did you search, what came back, what is genuinely missing. She then takes that to her supervisor. The tutor does not propose a replacement question for her to adopt.

Can my son use AI tools while researching his Extended Essay?+

Only within your school's published rules, and any use he makes has to be declared by him. Schools differ in what they permit and the rules change, so the authority is your DP coordinator's current guidance, not a tutor's opinion. What a tutor will do is teach him the difference between a tool that helps him search and a tool that produces text he then submits, because the second one ends his diploma. Anything a model generates is not his work, and the declaration he signs says the essay is.

Find your Mumbai tutor

Send us the essay subject, your child's year, your locality and two weekly slots that actually work, plus the research question and the supervisor's last written comment if they exist. You get two or three tutor profiles within a working day, you speak to two of them, and the first session is a ninety-minute diagnostic that ends in a one-page research plan emailed to you. If the fit is wrong after two sessions, we rematch.
