How does IB Gram shortlist a 4MA1 tutor in Mumbai?

Send one message with three facts: the year group, the tier your child has been entered for, and the two most recent marks that worried you. Within a working day you get two or three profiles of Pearson Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics specialists who already work in your part of the city, each one listing the boards and syllabus codes they have taught. You choose. The first session is a diagnostic, not a sales call.

Those three facts do more work than a long enquiry form. Year group tells us whether we are looking at a Year 9 student still meeting algebraic manipulation for the first time or a Year 11 student a few weeks from a written paper. Tier entry tells us whether the shortlist needs someone comfortable at the top end of the Higher paper, or someone who can rebuild number, ratio and proportion from the ground up without making a fifteen-year-old feel remedial. The recent marks tell us where the loss actually sits, and it is rarely the topic the school named. A student who scored badly on a circle theorems test has usually done the geometry correctly and lost the marks for never writing the reason beside each step, which is a presentation habit rather than a knowledge gap and takes about three sessions to fix.

Then we match by corridor, because a weekly slot that depends on crossing the city at 6pm does not last a full term. A family in Khar West gets tutors who live along the Western Line between Bandra and Andheri. A family in Kharghar gets Navi Mumbai tutors who can reach Palm Beach Road in fifteen minutes rather than someone crossing the Atal Setu twice a week through the monsoon. The arithmetic of a tutor's own commute is the quietest reason good matches fail, and it is the easiest one to check before anybody signs up.

If the first tutor is not right, say so after the second session and we re-shortlist without asking anyone to argue their case. The handover carries the diagnostic notes and a list of the past papers already attempted, so the second tutor does not start from zero and your child does not sit the same diagnostic twice.

  • 1. Send the year group, the tier entry and the last two test marks.
  • 2. We filter for tutors who have actually taught Edexcel 4MA1, not general Class 10 maths.
  • 3. We narrow by Mumbai corridor so the weekly slot is physically sustainable.
  • 4. You receive two or three profiles with boards taught and real availability windows.
  • 5. The first session is a past-paper diagnostic, with written findings sent after.

Foundation tier or Higher tier for Mathematics A in Mumbai schools

Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics A is sat at one of two tiers, Foundation or Higher, and the tier your child is entered for decides what tuition should be about. Higher tier is the route towards A Level Mathematics and towards Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP). Foundation tier caps the top grade available, which is the first thing to confirm with the school rather than infer from a report card.

Mumbai schools set tier entry at different moments and on different evidence. Some decide during Year 10 on the strength of an internal examination; others hold the decision until the entry deadline in Year 11 and use the mocks. Pearson Edexcel publishes the entry windows for each series, and your school's examinations officer holds the date that actually binds, so ask for it in writing instead of relying on a WhatsApp group. Tier is not always permanent either. A student moved down to Foundation in Year 10 can sometimes be moved back if the Year 11 mocks justify it, and that conversation goes much better when a tutor's written notes are in front of the head of department.

The tier changes the work completely. Foundation tuition that is worth paying for spends its early weeks on fractions, percentage change, ratio and the reading of a worded question, because that is where the marks are concentrated and where a student who has been quietly guessing for two years gets found out. Higher tuition starts further up: algebraic fractions, a quadratic solved simultaneously with a linear equation, graph transformations, three-dimensional trigonometry, vectors written as column pairs. A tutor who teaches both tiers the same way is not teaching either of them.

There is also the question of which qualification your child is sitting at all. Cambridge International Education and Pearson Edexcel run different IGCSE mathematics routes, and a tutor who has only taught one of them will be guessing at the other's question style. If your school also offers Further Pure Mathematics as a second code, treat that as a separate decision with its own tutor and its own page. The request that reaches us most often is for a Mathematics A (4MA1) IGCSE Years 9-11 tutor Mumbai families can keep for two school years instead of hiring in a panic in February.

  • Ask the school which tier your child is entered for, in writing
  • Higher tier is the route to A Level Maths and IB DP Analysis and Approaches
  • Foundation tier caps the top grade available, so check before Year 11 begins
  • Tier moves are possible at some Mumbai schools in Year 11, not all
  • Entry deadlines sit with the examinations officer, not the class teacher

What do Papers 1 and 2 actually test in Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics A?

Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics A (4MA1) is assessed by two written papers, Paper 1 and Paper 2, both sat at the same tier at the end of the course. They draw on the same specification content, so no topic can be safely dropped on the grounds that it already came up in Paper 1. A Mathematics A (4MA1) tutor in Mumbai worth the fee plans for both papers from the first session.

The content splits into number, algebra and sequences, geometry and trigonometry, mensuration, vectors and transformation geometry, and statistics and probability. At the upper end you meet algebraic fractions, functions and the transformation of graphs, circle theorems with their reasons, trigonometry in three dimensions, histograms with unequal class widths, set notation with Venn diagrams, and an introduction to differentiation used for gradients and turning points. Which of those sit on Higher tier only has moved between specification cycles, so the current Pearson Edexcel specification and its sample assessment materials are the only places to confirm it for the year your child sits. Print the subject content list, tick what has been taught, and bring the sheet to the first session; it is a faster diagnostic than any conversation.

Marks are lost in patterns rather than at random. A Year 11 student in Powai dropped most of a statistics question because she read frequency straight off the vertical axis of a histogram with unequal class widths instead of frequency density. Her arithmetic was clean, every value after that was wrong, and one line of working showing what she had assumed would have saved part of it. The same pattern appears in bearings questions answered without a diagram, in surds tidied into decimals too early, and in probability trees drawn with branches that do not sum correctly.

Both papers reward written method, and both punish premature rounding. A student who carries a rounded value through four steps and then gives an answer to three significant figures has produced a number that is not quite right and cannot be rescued by the mark scheme. Good tuition trains the mechanical habits: full calculator precision held in memory, the answer rounded once at the end, units written, and the question re-read to check whether it asked for the area or the perimeter.

  • Both written papers draw on the same content, so nothing can be dropped
  • Higher tier adds algebraic fractions, graph transformations and basic differentiation
  • Circle theorem marks need the reason written, not just the angle
  • Round once at the end; carried rounding errors cost accuracy marks
  • Print the specification content list and tick off what the school has taught

Where across Mumbai we place IGCSE Maths home tutors

IB Gram places tutors across the whole of Mumbai, Maharashtra, and the Edexcel IGCSE Maths A 4MA1 home tutor in Mumbai who works best is almost always the one with the shortest journey to your door. In South Mumbai we match inside the island: Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Churchgate, Walkeshwar and Worli are short distances that still cost forty minutes in the evening peak because of the Peddar Road and Haji Ali signals. The Coastal Road has changed the Worli run, and Metro Line 3 has made a Cuffe Parade to Bandra Kurla Complex trip predictable for the first time, but we still rarely bring a tutor down from the suburbs for a 7pm island slot.

The Western Suburbs run north to south along the Western Line and the Western Express Highway, and matching along that spine works far better than matching across it. Bandra West, Khar West, Santacruz West and Juhu form one cluster; Andheri West, Malad, Kandivali East and Borivali form another, now stitched together by Metro Lines 2A and 7 above Link Road. In the Central Suburbs we cover Powai, Chandivali, Ghatkopar East, Kanjurmarg and Mulund West. Powai is the awkward one: it is geographically central with no station of its own, so tutors arrive by road along JVLR from Andheri East or up from Ghatkopar on Metro Line 1.

The Eastern Suburbs stretch from Chembur and Govandi through Wadala, Vikhroli and Bhandup, served by the Central and Harbour lines, the Eastern Express Highway and the Eastern Freeway, which puts Fort within reach of a Chembur tutor far faster than the map suggests. Navi Mumbai is planned in nodes, and we match node to node: Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar and Panvel sit minutes apart on Palm Beach Road and the Sion-Panvel Highway. Thane runs west to east from the station across Pokhran Road, Majiwada and Ghodbunder Road, and Ghodbunder sets the timetable: twenty minutes to Kasarvadavali off-peak, close to an hour at 7pm.

An IGCSE tutors near me search run from a Mumbai address sorts by distance and tells you nothing about whether the tutor has taught this syllabus code. Distance matters, but it is the second filter, not the first. We would rather give you a Thane tutor who has taught 4MA1 Higher for three cohorts and arrives at 6.45pm than a neighbour in your own building who last saw the specification as a student.

  • South Mumbai: Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Churchgate, Walkeshwar and Worli, matched within the island
  • Western Suburbs: Bandra West, Khar West, Juhu, Andheri West, Malad, Kandivali East, Borivali
  • Central Suburbs: Powai, Chandivali, Ghatkopar East, Kanjurmarg and Mulund West
  • Eastern Suburbs: Chembur, Govandi, Wadala, Vikhroli and Bhandup
  • Navi Mumbai: Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar and Panvel, matched node to node
  • Thane: Pokhran Road, Majiwada, Ghodbunder Road and Kasarvadavali

How the Mumbai school calendar squeezes a 4MA1 candidate

IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with any school named on this page. Families we work with attend Cathedral and John Connon School in Fort, B.D. Somani International School at Cuffe Parade, Activity High School on Peddar Road, Jamnabai Narsee International School in Juhu, Hiranandani Foundation School in Powai, Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania School in Thane and D.Y. Patil International School in Nerul, among many others. We name them because their calendars set the pressure points, not because we have any arrangement with them.

The year starts in June, which in Mumbai means it starts in the monsoon. July and August lose sessions to rain, waterlogged roads and the occasional closure, and a tutor travelling from Vikhroli to Bandra on a bad Tuesday will be late. Families who build a replacement slot into the week from the beginning, usually Saturday morning, lose nothing. Families who treat every missed session as a one-off end October having covered two months of work in six weeks.

Then the festival block arrives. Ganesh Chaturthi takes a week out of September and reroutes half of South Mumbai; Diwali takes most of a fortnight in October or November depending on the year. Schools often set Year 11 mocks for December or January, immediately after that gap, which is why November is the month when enquiries spike and good 4MA1 tutors have no slots left. The parents who book in July get the tutor they want. The parents who book after the mocks get whoever is free at 8pm.

From January the calendar tightens for real. Written papers for the main series fall in the May and June window, with a separate January series available for some subjects, and the exact dates for your child's entries come from the school's examinations officer rather than from a forum. Alongside that sit internal assessments in other subjects, the school's own study leave arrangement and, for Year 11 students, the first serious conversation about A Level or IB DP subject choices. Home tuition in this stretch should narrow rather than expand: whole past papers under time, then one topic repaired, then another paper.

  • June start lands in the monsoon; build a replacement slot into the week
  • Ganesh Chaturthi and Diwali remove roughly three weeks between September and November
  • December and January mocks follow the festival gap, which is why November books out
  • Confirm your exam series dates with the school's examinations officer, not a parent group
  • From January, work whole timed papers rather than adding new topics

Home tuition, online or hybrid for 4MA1 in Mumbai?

Home tuition is the lead service and the right default for most families. Most parents who ask for an Edexcel IGCSE Maths A 4MA1 tutor in Mumbai want someone at the dining table twice a week, because a maths session that works involves watching the student write. A tutor sitting beside a fifteen-year-old sees the moment the minus sign is dropped, the moment a diagram is skipped, the moment confidence goes. IGCSE home tuition in Mumbai also survives a teenager's resistance better than a screen does, and nobody has to be chased to switch a camera on.

The honest cost of home visits is travel. An IGCSE home tutor in Mumbai who crosses a zone for your slot is spending real time on the road, that time is priced in, and a 7pm Thursday booking in Lower Parel or on Ghodbunder Road will occasionally start late. Our siblings cover the visit mechanics in detail; the short version is that we match within your corridor first and ask you to keep the slot fixed so the tutor can plan around it.

Online suits specific cases rather than everyone. An IGCSE online tutor in Mumbai makes sense when the specialist you need for the top of the Higher paper lives in Pune or Bengaluru, when the family travels, or when a Year 11 student wants a short thirty-minute clinic the night before a mock. It demands a tablet with a stylus or a document camera, because typed maths is slow and a phone held over a page is worse than nothing. Our online page covers the equipment and the lesson structure properly.

Hybrid is what most of our longer engagements settle into: one home session a week for the teaching and one online session for marking, past-paper review and question-by-question feedback. Mathematics A (4MA1) home classes Mumbai families run on a Tuesday and a Saturday, with a short online review on Thursday, cover more ground than three home visits that keep getting cancelled by traffic. Whichever mode you choose, ask the tutor to send a written note after each session; an IGCSE private tutor Mumbai parents can actually supervise is one who leaves a paper trail.

  • Home sessions let the tutor watch the student write, which is where errors show
  • Travel time is real and is priced into a cross-zone home visit
  • Online works for scarce specialists, short clinics and travelling families
  • Online maths needs a stylus tablet or document camera, not a phone camera
  • Hybrid pattern: one home session to teach, one online session to mark

How is an IGCSE home tutor in Mumbai checked before the first session?

Before a profile is shown to you we confirm identity with photo identification, confirm the degree or teaching qualification claimed, and confirm the boards and syllabus codes the tutor says they have taught, including how many cohorts and in what role. Every Edexcel IGCSE Maths A 4MA1 tutor in Mumbai on our list has answered specification questions, not general maths questions, because those are different conversations.

The specification questions are the useful part of the screen. We ask how the tutor would teach a circle theorem proof to a student who can see the answer but cannot write the reason. We ask what they do with a student who solves quadratics by formula every time and never factorises. We ask which Higher tier topics they expect to re-teach in Year 11 rather than revise. A tutor who has taught 4MA1 answers these in specifics within seconds; a tutor who has taught the CBSE Class 10 syllabus and assumes it transfers starts talking about chapters instead.

You should run your own checks on top of ours, and you only need three. Ask to see the tutor's own worked solution to a question from a recent past paper, written out as they would teach it; the handwriting and the method tell you more than any certificate. Ask what they will send you after each session. Ask what they expect your child to do between sessions, and whether that is twenty minutes or two hours, because an answer of none is a warning.

Be wary of a tutor who offers a guaranteed grade, a fixed number of marks of improvement, or a leaked insight into what is coming on the paper. None of those exist. IB Gram does not guarantee grades, and no honest tutor in this city will. What a good tutor will commit to is a diagnosis you can read, a plan with dates in it, and a willingness to tell you in week four that the problem is twenty missed sessions rather than the tutoring.

  • Identity, qualification and cohort history confirmed before a profile is shared
  • Screening uses 4MA1 specification questions, not general maths questions
  • Ask for a handwritten worked solution to a recent past-paper question
  • Ask what arrives in writing after each session, and when
  • Be wary of promises about exact grades or paper content

The 4MA1 formula sheet: what Edexcel prints and what has to be recalled

Every 4MA1 candidate sits the paper with a set of formulae printed for them and a longer set they are expected to recall, and most students never find out which is which until the exam hall. A good Edexcel IGCSE Maths A 4MA1 tutor in Mumbai starts by settling that question with evidence rather than memory. What is printed has changed between specification cycles and differs by tier, so the only reliable sources are the current Pearson Edexcel specification and the sample assessment materials for the series your child is entered for. Download both, look at the actual page the student will see, and build the two lists from that page.

Then make the lists physical. On one side of a sheet, the formulae that will be in front of them: the student should know where on the page each one sits, because hunting for it under time is its own kind of mark loss. On the other side, everything the paper assumes they can produce from nothing. That second list is where tuition earns its money. It typically runs across area and circumference relationships, the gradient and intercept forms of a straight line, the trigonometric ratios, the conversion between speed, distance and time, compound interest and depreciation as repeated multipliers, probability rules, and the index and surd laws. Confirm each one against the current specification instead of trusting the list your child's senior copied two years ago.

The drill that works is short and frequent. Five minutes at the start of every session, the student writes the recall list from memory on a blank sheet, and the tutor marks only what is missing. After three weeks the list stops being a list and becomes something they can produce in the margin of a question paper in the first two minutes of the exam. A Year 11 student in Bandra West who could not reliably write the cosine rule in September was writing the whole recall sheet from memory in under four minutes by December, and her working on three-dimensional trigonometry questions changed character completely.

The second half of this is knowing when a printed formula is a trap. A student who sees a formula on the page assumes the question wants it, and will push a cone volume into a question about a frustum or a sector, or reach for the sine rule where simple right-angled trigonometry was shorter and safer. Recognising which tool a question is asking for is a separate skill from knowing the tools, and it is trained by doing many short questions across mixed topics rather than by finishing one topic at a time.

  • Confirm the printed formulae against the current specification and sample papers
  • Build two lists: what is printed, and what must be recalled cold
  • Five minutes per session writing the recall list from memory beats re-reading it
  • Learn where each printed formula sits on the page to save hunting time
  • Mixed-topic question sets train tool selection, which single-topic practice does not

What progress looks like at four weeks, one term and one exam cycle

At four weeks you should not expect a grade change, and anyone promising one is selling. What you should see is a written diagnosis you recognise as your child, a slot that has actually been kept, and a change in how homework looks: working written down, diagrams drawn, answers no longer appearing from nowhere. If the tutor cannot tell you by week four which two topics are weakest and why, that is the signal to re-shortlist, not to wait another month.

At one term the measurable things start arriving. Marks on internal tests usually move first on the topics that were repaired, and the pattern of lost marks changes before the total does: fewer method omissions, fewer rounding errors, fewer questions left blank because the student did not recognise the opening. Parents often notice the soft signal first. A child who used to leave maths homework until Sunday night starts doing it on Friday, because the subject has stopped being the one where they expect to fail.

Across one full exam cycle, from the first mock to the written papers, the realistic picture is that focused tuition plus consistent independent work moves a student who was drifting into the middle of the Higher tier range into the upper part of it. An Edexcel IGCSE Maths A 4MA1 tutor in Mumbai cannot compensate for a student who does not attempt questions between sessions, and will not pretend otherwise. Two sessions a week with no independent practice beats nothing and loses comfortably to one session a week with forty minutes of questions in between.

The honest limits are worth stating plainly. We do not guarantee grades and we do not predict them. A tutor cannot change a tier entry, cannot see the paper, and cannot repair two years of missed foundations in the eight weeks before a written exam, although they can often decide which topics to abandon so the rest holds. If your child is six weeks out and badly behind, the useful plan is triage, not coverage, and a tutor who says so is the one to keep.

  • Week four: a written diagnosis, a kept slot, visible working in homework
  • One term: fewer method omissions and fewer blank questions before totals move
  • One cycle: steady work usually moves a student up within the Higher range
  • No tutor can change tier entry or recover two years in eight weeks
  • Triage beats coverage when the written papers are six weeks away

Starting 4MA1 home tuition in Mumbai this month

Four things make the first session useful instead of introductory. The last two marked maths tests, including the teacher's comments. The school's statement of which tier your child is entered for. A printout of the subject content list from the current specification. And a realistic view of which two evenings a week are genuinely free, taking school transport and any other coaching into account. Families who bring these get a diagnosis in session one; families who bring none spend session one on questions that could have been answered on WhatsApp.

The first session runs as a diagnostic. The tutor sets questions across number, algebra, geometry and statistics, watches how the student works rather than only what they answer, and stops to probe wherever the method goes quiet. It is not a test with a score at the end. By the close the tutor should be able to name the two topics to repair first, the one habit costing the most marks, and the amount of independent work expected each week.

After that you get a short written note: what was covered, what was set, what to watch. Over the following weeks the pattern settles into teaching, then practice under time, then a whole paper. Around mock season the balance tips entirely towards timed papers and the marking of them, which is the part students skip when left alone, because reading your own wrong answer carefully is unpleasant and it is where most of the available marks are.

Tell us the year group, the tier, the part of Mumbai you are in and the two evenings that work, and you will have profiles to choose from within a working day. Ask the awkward questions on the call: how many 4MA1 cohorts, what happens when a session is missed, what arrives in writing. A tutor who answers those well on the phone is usually the one who is still turning up in February.

  • Bring the last two marked tests with the teacher's comments
  • Bring the school's written confirmation of Foundation or Higher tier entry
  • Decide which two weekday evenings are genuinely free before you book
  • Expect a diagnosis, not a lesson, in the first session
  • Ask how many 4MA1 cohorts the tutor has taught, and in what role
FAQs

Mumbai tutoring — questions parents ask

What should I send when I ask for an Edexcel IGCSE maths tutor?+

Send three things: the year group, the tier your child is entered for, and the last two marked test papers. That is enough for us to shortlist. The marked papers matter most, because the comment a teacher writes in the margin usually identifies the real problem faster than a parent's summary can. If you also know which topics the school has already taught this year, say so, because a Year 10 class that has not reached circle theorems yet needs a different plan from one that covered them in July and moved on.

How much does IGCSE maths tuition cost in Mumbai?+

It depends on five things, and any figure quoted before those are known is a guess. IGCSE tuition fees in Mumbai move with the board and level, the scarcity of the subject, the distance the tutor travels, the length and frequency of sessions, and whether the tutor is a working teacher or a full-time private tutor. A Higher tier 4MA1 specialist travelling to Cuffe Parade for ninety minutes twice a week sits at a different rate from an hour of online support. Ask for the rate per session, the travel assumption and the cancellation terms in one message, and compare those three together.

Will a tutor travel to Kharghar for a 7pm weekday slot?+

Yes, if the tutor is matched from within Navi Mumbai rather than pulled across the creek. A Kharghar family is best served by tutors living in Kharghar, Belapur, Nerul or Panvel, who reach you on Palm Beach Road or the Sion-Panvel Highway in minutes. A tutor coming from the island city via the Atal Setu can do it once; keeping it every Tuesday and Thursday through the monsoon is what fails. Tell us the exact slot you want before we shortlist, and we will only send profiles for tutors who can hold it week after week.

Does a parent need to be at home during a home tuition session?+

Not for the whole session, but someone should be in the flat. Most families keep an adult or household staff member present and the study door open, which is sensible and also removes any awkwardness for the tutor. What helps more than supervision is the setup: a table rather than a bed, a chair at the right height, the phone in another room, and no television audible. Home tuition in a Mumbai two-bedroom flat with a younger sibling practising keyboard in the next room will not work, and it is better to say so and move the slot than to persist.

My son is entered for Foundation tier. Can that change?+

Sometimes, and it is worth asking early. Tier entry is a school decision made against a deadline published by Pearson Edexcel, so the window closes at a fixed point in Year 11. Some Mumbai schools will reconsider on the strength of a strong mock and a written case from a tutor; others hold the line once entries are submitted. Ask the head of department two questions: what evidence would change the decision, and by what date. If the answer is that it cannot change, stop spending the tuition on Higher tier content and spend it on securing the top of the Foundation range instead.

Does the printed formula sheet mean he does not need to memorise formulae?+

No. The paper prints some formulae and expects the rest to be recalled, and the recall list is longer than most students assume. Which formulae appear has differed between specification cycles and between tiers, so check the current Pearson Edexcel specification and the sample assessment materials for your child's series rather than trusting an older list. Then split the formulae into printed and recall, and drill the recall side for five minutes at the start of every session. Students who do this write the whole recall list in the margin in the first two minutes of the exam.

He gets the right answer but still loses marks. What is going on?+

He is almost certainly losing method marks, which are awarded for visible working rather than for the final number. A Powai student we worked with was solving simultaneous equations correctly in his head and writing only the answers, so a single arithmetic slip cost the whole question instead of one mark. Circle theorems are the other common case: the angle is right, the reason is missing, and the reason carries marks. This is a habit, not a knowledge gap, and it usually takes three or four sessions of being made to write every line before it sticks.

How does a tutor get past our society gate every week?+

Most Mumbai societies settle this with a standing entry rather than a fresh visitor pass each time. Give the gate the tutor's name, phone number and the fixed day and time once, and ask the committee or the facility manager to log it as a recurring visitor so the tutor is not held at the gate for ten minutes of a ninety-minute session. In larger complexes the app-based pass works well if someone at home approves it promptly. If your building insists on a fresh pass every visit, tell the tutor at the booking stage so the arrival time accounts for it.

Four weeks in and I see no change. What should I do?+

Ask for the diagnosis in writing and compare it against the attendance. In most cases of no visible change at four weeks, one of three things is true: sessions have been cancelled more often than anyone admits, no independent practice is happening between sessions, or the tutor is teaching topics rather than fixing the habit that loses the marks. Each has a different fix. If the tutor cannot name the two weakest topics and the one costly habit by week four, ask us to re-shortlist. We hand over the diagnostic notes so the next tutor does not restart.

Can online sessions work for maths, or is a home tutor better?+

Home sessions are better for most Year 9 and Year 10 students, because the tutor needs to watch the pen move. Online becomes genuinely competitive from Year 11 and when the student is independent enough to work a problem on paper while the tutor watches through a document camera or a stylus tablet. The hybrid pattern suits the largest number of families: one home visit for teaching, one online slot for marking and paper review. Our online page covers the equipment, bandwidth and lesson structure in detail rather than in a paragraph.

What happens if the tutor is not working out?+

Tell us after the second session and we re-shortlist, with no requirement to justify the decision. Fit failures are usually about pace or manner rather than competence: a tutor who is excellent with a confident student can be too brisk for one who has stopped asking questions. We pass on the diagnostic notes, the topics covered and the past papers attempted so the replacement starts from where you are. The one thing not to do is wait three months out of politeness, because the calendar does not wait with you.

Is 4MA1 the same as Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580?+

No. They are separate qualifications from different boards, Pearson Edexcel and Cambridge International Education, with different papers, different question styles and different formula provision. Many Mumbai schools offer one or the other, and a few run both across different cohorts, so check the code on your child's statement of entry rather than assuming. A tutor who has taught 0580 for years will know the mathematics perfectly well but will be unfamiliar with how Edexcel words and structures its questions, and in the last two terms that familiarity is a large part of what you are paying for.
