Certified IB Tutor in Mumbai

Parents who type certified IB tutor in Mumbai into Google want a home tutor whose qualifications are real and checkable. This page explains plainly that the International Baccalaureate (IB) does not certify private tutors at all, which credentials genuinely exist, and the four questions that settle the matter before you book a single home tuition session.

How does IB Gram handle a search for a certified IB tutor in Mumbai?

We translate the word certified into the four things it is standing in for, because the word itself cannot be matched on. When a request for a certified IB tutor in Mumbai reaches a coordinator here, it gets broken into four questions a parent is really asking: does this person know the subject at the level being taught, have they taught it to this age group before, will somebody outside their own CV vouch for them, and can they be at your flat at the same hour every week for a full term. Not one of those four is a certificate. All four can be checked in an afternoon.

So the intake call never asks about certificates. It asks which board and which year: Diploma Programme (DP) Year 1 or Year 2, Middle Years Programme (MYP) Year 4, IGCSE Year 10 or Year 11. It asks for the subject and the level, meaning Higher Level (HL) or Standard Level (SL) on the IB side and Core or Extended on the IGCSE side. It asks what came back on the last marked piece of work and what the teacher wrote underneath it. Then it asks where you live, which floor, and which two evenings genuinely work. A tutor who is right for Chemistry HL in Khar West is the wrong match for the same subject in Kharghar, because the travel quietly kills the slot by week three and nobody says so until the term is half gone.

The shortlist that comes back writes qualifications out in full rather than summarising them into a badge. It names the degree and the university that awarded it, the teaching qualification where there is one, the schools taught at with the years, and the boards and levels actually taught. Where a tutor has done examining work for a board under contract, the profile says examining work for a named board, which is a job rather than a certification. Where a tutor has attended an IB professional development workshop, the profile says workshop attendance, because that is exactly what attending a workshop is. Reading three profiles written that way takes about four minutes and tells you more than any certificate scan sent on WhatsApp.

The last step is the one most parents skip, and it is the only one that tests ability rather than paperwork. Before you commit to a weekly slot, hand the tutor one piece of your child's recent marked work with the teacher's grade covered up, and ask them to mark it against the published criteria for that subject and say which criterion is costing the marks. A tutor who can do that in fifteen minutes has shown you something no framed document can. A tutor who talks around it has also told you something.

  • 1. Tell us board, year, subject, level and the last marked grade
  • 2. We shortlist two or three tutors whose written history matches that level
  • 3. You read each profile: degree, teaching qualification, schools taught at, dates
  • 4. Book a paid first session and set one task you can judge yourself
  • 5. Ask the tutor to mark a past script against the published subject criteria
  • 6. Keep that tutor, or ask us for a different one, afterwards

What the IB runs for teachers, and what nobody runs for tutors

The International Baccalaureate (IB) does run professional development, and it is worth understanding precisely what it is. The IB runs workshops for teachers, organised into recognised categories that move from an introduction to a subject's requirements through to more advanced practice, delivered in person at regional events and online. A school registers its staff, the staff attend, and the school keeps the record as part of showing it supports the people in its classrooms. That is the entire mechanism. It is professional development for classroom teachers working inside authorised IB schools, and it is aimed at the school's programme, not at anybody's private practice.

What follows from that is narrow, and the narrowness is the point. A teacher who has attended an IB subject workshop has attended an IB subject workshop. It is a genuine and useful thing to have done, and someone who has sat through one usually reads the assessment model more accurately than someone who has not. But it is not a tutoring licence. It does not transfer to a private arrangement at your dining table in Chembur, nobody inspects or renews it when that teacher starts taking students privately, and it does not make the person an IB certified tutor, because the IB does not certify tutors. There is no IB register of approved private tutors, no IB tutor examination, and no IB endorsement that any platform, including this one, can apply for or buy.

Cambridge International Education works on the same logic. It supports and trains teachers at registered schools and examination centres, and what it recognises is the centre, not the individual coaching a student at home in Vashi. Pearson Edexcel is the same again. Separately, some universities offer teaching certificates and master's routes recognised by the IB for classroom educators, and where a tutor holds one of those, the award comes from the named university and is a teaching qualification rather than a permit to tutor. The pattern across every board is identical: the bodies register schools and centres, and nobody anywhere registers tutors. An IB private tutor Mumbai families hire is not holding a regulated title.

This matters most at the boundaries between programmes, where a mismatched specialist does real damage. Primary Years Programme (PYP) teaching runs on inquiry and transdisciplinary units, and a DP Physics specialist is usually a poor fit for a Year 3 child. MYP Years 4 and 5 run on published subject criteria and a personal project. IGCSE Years 10 and 11 run on syllabus content and a fixed set of papers. The Diploma Programme adds Internal Assessment (IA) in every subject, the Extended Essay (EE) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK) on top of six subjects and a timetable that does not move. No certificate tells you which of those four a person can teach. The schools they taught in, and the years they were there, tell you almost immediately.

  • The IB runs teacher workshops through authorised schools, not tutor licensing
  • Attending a workshop is attendance, not a qualification to tutor privately
  • Cambridge International registers schools and examination centres, never individual tutors
  • University-awarded IB teaching certificates exist and name the awarding university
  • No board issues, renews or inspects any private tutoring credential anywhere

Testing real depth across all IB and IGCSE subjects

Subject choice is where a credential claim either holds up or falls apart, because every subject carries its own assessment machinery. On the IB side a DP student picks six subjects, three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, and the HL decision changes the paper structure, the content volume and the IA expectation. On the IGCSE side the equivalent decision is Core or Extended, which changes which papers the student sits and the grade range available to them, and it is routinely made in Year 9 by families who have not been told it caps an outcome. Ask any tutor to explain the Core and Extended split in Mathematics before you discuss anything else. The answer takes thirty seconds and separates the people who have taught it from the people who have read about it.

Then there are the internal assessments, which is where parents lose marks they never see coming. MYP Sciences is marked against published criteria covering knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science, and a child who writes a beautiful method but never evaluates the limitations of their data loses a band on one criterion alone. A DP Sciences IA lives or dies on research design and the evaluation paragraph, not on the quality of the graph. A DP Mathematics exploration is marked on presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and the mathematics itself, which means a technically perfect piece with no reflection sits mid-band. The published criteria for all IB and IGCSE subjects a tutor in Mumbai teaches are public documents, and a tutor who cannot name the criteria for your child's subject has not been working in it.

The language and humanities subjects behave differently again, and the mismatch here is the most common one we see. DP English Language and Literature splits a guided textual analysis from a comparative essay and an oral component, and a tutor whose instinct is to teach content summaries will coach the wrong skill for a year. Economics at Higher Level carries an extra paper with a quantitative and policy emphasis that Standard Level students never sit. History carries an internal investigation with its own structure and its own reference expectations. A tutor who taught IGCSE History well does not automatically transfer to a DP History investigation, and the honest ones say so on the first call.

So the subject conversation we run is deliberately specific. Not can you teach Biology, but can you teach DP Biology HL with the IA due in February, or MYP Year 5 Integrated Sciences with a criterion-marked lab report next fortnight, or IGCSE Co-ordinated Sciences Extended with a child who is strong in Chemistry and lost in Physics. Those three requests need three different people. Matching them to one person because that person had a certificate is how a term gets wasted politely.

  • HL or SL on the IB side changes paper structure and IA expectation
  • Core or Extended in IGCSE Mathematics changes papers and available grade range
  • MYP subjects are marked against published criteria, not against a content list
  • DP IAs turn on research design and evaluation more than presentation
  • A tutor should name your child's subject criteria without being prompted
  • IGCSE strength does not automatically transfer to a DP investigation

Home tuition across all six zones of Mumbai

The same request arrives from every corner of Mumbai, Maharashtra, and geography changes the answer more than credentials do. In South Mumbai the distances look trivial and behave badly: a tutor crossing from Worli to Colaba covers eight kilometres and can still lose forty minutes to the Peddar Road and Haji Ali signals at seven in the evening, which is why we match inside the island for Cuffe Parade, Walkeshwar, Fort and Tardeo rather than pulling somebody down the Coastal Road from the suburbs. The Western Line through Churchgate, Grant Road and Mumbai Central and Metro Line 3 towards Bandra Kurla Complex make midday and weekend slots workable here in a way weekday evenings are not. In the Western Suburbs the city runs north to south along the Western Express Highway, Link Road and the Western Line, so Bandra to Andheri is quick at eleven in the morning and brutal at six, and matching along the line, Khar West to Santacruz West, Malad to Kandivali, Borivali to Dahisar, holds together where matching across it does not. Metro Lines 2A and 7 have changed Goregaon, Malad and Dahisar genuinely, and Metro Line 1 makes Andheri to Ghatkopar a reliable thirty minutes.

The Central Suburbs sit on the Central Line and the Eastern Express Highway, with Powai and Chandivali hanging off the Jogeshwari Vikhroli Link Road in between. Powai is the exception that catches new tutors out: it is physically central and has no station of its own, so a tutor reaches a Hiranandani Gardens flat by road from Andheri East, Kanjurmarg or Ghatkopar, and a monsoon evening turns a twenty-minute run into fifty. Kurla and Mulund are straightforward by train. The Santacruz Chembur Link Road is the piece that makes a Chembur tutor viable in Powai at all. In the Eastern Suburbs, from Chembur and Govandi through Vikhroli and Bhandup up to Mulund, the Central and Harbour lines plus the Eastern Freeway mean South Mumbai is closer from Chembur or Wadala than the map suggests, and a tutor living in Chembur can realistically cover both a Govandi student at five and a Wadala student at seven.

Navi Mumbai is planned in nodes, and node-to-node is the only pattern that survives a full term. Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar and Panvel are each a short drive from the next along Palm Beach Road and the Sion Panvel Highway, served by the Harbour Line, the Trans-Harbour Line from Thane and Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 between Belapur and Pendhar. The Atal Setu has shortened the island crossing on paper, but pulling a tutor across the creek for a Tuesday evening lesson in Kharghar still breaks by about week five. Thane spreads west to east from the station across Pokhran Road, Majiwada and Ghodbunder Road, and the Ghodbunder stretch sets the whole schedule: a tutor near Thane station reaches Kasarvadavali in twenty minutes off-peak and close to an hour in the evening peak. Thane tutors cover Thane, and a Mulund tutor crosses over only for a weekend slot.

None of this is logistics trivia dressed up as content. It is the single most common reason a credential-led search ends badly. A parent in Dahisar finds a tutor in Chembur whose paperwork looks impressive, books the slot on that basis, and by the fourth week the sessions are starting at eight and ending early. The tutor was not the problem; the commute was. One home tutor for all IB and IGCSE subjects Mumbai families actually study is rare in any case, so for a DP student taking Physics HL and Spanish SL you are usually arranging two people, which doubles the travel question. All IB and IGCSE subjects home classes Mumbai parents book get judged on whether the slot survives March, and that is a map problem before it is a qualifications problem. When a parent searches IB tutors near me in Mumbai, the instinct behind the search is correct.

  • South Mumbai: Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Worli, Walkeshwar, Fort, matched within the island
  • Western Suburbs: Bandra, Khar West, Santacruz West, Juhu, Andheri, Malad, Borivali, Dahisar
  • Central Suburbs: Powai, Chandivali, Ghatkopar, Kurla, Kanjurmarg, Mulund, reached via JVLR
  • Eastern Suburbs: Chembur, Govandi, Vikhroli, Bhandup, Wadala, helped by the Eastern Freeway
  • Navi Mumbai: Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar, Panvel, matched node to node
  • Thane: Pokhran Road, Majiwada, Ghodbunder Road, Kasarvadavali, scheduled around the evening peak

Which Mumbai school calendar sets your real deadlines?

Your child's school calendar, not the examination session, is what decides when a tutor is urgently needed. The Mumbai academic year opens in June or early July, the first reporting round lands in August and September, mock examinations cluster through October and November, and the serious internal assessment submissions fall between December and the end of February. Final uploads for a May session sit in the first weeks of March. Which means the honest advice is that a tutor hired in January for a May examination is arriving after most of the coursework marks have already been fixed, and the useful hiring months are July, August and early September.

The pressure points stack rather than arrive one at a time, and this is what parents underestimate. Families at Dhirubhai Ambani International School in Bandra Kurla Complex, the American School of Bombay, Ascend International School, Ecole Mondiale World School and Jamnabai Narsee International School in Juhu, Oberoi International School off the Jogeshwari Vikhroli Link Road, Hiranandani Foundation School in Powai, NES International School in Mulund West and the JBCN International School campuses in Parel, Borivali, Oshiwara and Chembur all work to the same broad DP rhythm. In South Mumbai, B.D. Somani International School in Cuffe Parade, Cathedral and John Connon School in Fort, Bombay International School at Babulnath, Activity High School on Peddar Road, Gopi Birla Memorial School in Walkeshwar and Aditya Birla World Academy in Tardeo set the IGCSE and DP pattern. Across the creek and up the Central Line, D.Y. Patil International School in Nerul and Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania School in Thane add their own dates, as do Thakur International School in Kandivali East, Singapore International School in Dahisar East, Bombay Cambridge International School in Andheri East and the Billabong High, Podar, Witty and Ryan Global campuses spread between Santacruz, Malad, Chembur, Worli and Thane.

IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform and is not affiliated with the International Baccalaureate organisation, with Cambridge International Education, or with any school named on this page. Naming those schools here is local context and nothing more: it tells you which calendar your neighbour's child is working to, which is genuinely useful when you are deciding whether a Thursday slot will collide with a submission week. We do not represent any of them, and none of them has approved, endorsed or reviewed this page or any tutor on the platform.

There is one calendar point worth separating out, because it is where a school posting becomes a checkable credential rather than a boast. A tutor who says they taught DP Chemistry at a named Mumbai school in a named academic year is making a claim you can test with two polite questions: which school, and which years. Schools keep staff records, former colleagues answer the telephone, and an honest tutor expects the question. A tutor who says they are IB certified is making a claim with nothing behind it to test, because there is no body to ring and no register to search. The difference between those two sentences is the entire subject of this page.

  • Mumbai school year opens in June or July, with mocks in October and November
  • Internal assessment submissions cluster from December to late February
  • Hiring in July or August beats hiring in January for a May session
  • A named school and named years can be verified; a certificate claim often cannot
  • Ask whether a proposed weekly slot collides with a submission fortnight

Does an IB home tutor in Mumbai need a certificate to teach my child?

No. No board, the IB included, requires or issues any certificate for private tutoring in Mumbai or anywhere else, so a certificate is never the right thing to screen on. What decides whether an IB home tutor in Mumbai is worth the money is subject depth at the right level, a teaching history somebody can confirm, and a weekly slot that survives the traffic until March.

Home tutoring is what most families here want and what we lead with, and the reasons are practical rather than sentimental. A tutor at your table sees the things a screen hides: the child who has not opened the textbook, the folder with three unmarked worksheets in it, the brother practising tabla in the next room during the only quiet hour of the evening. Hand-marked diagrams in Biology, working shown line by line in Mathematics and the physical act of annotating a past paper all go faster in person. The cost is travel, and travel is the real constraint: an evening home slot in Mumbai locks a tutor out of roughly two hours around it, which narrows who can genuinely commit to a Kandivali or Kasarvadavali address on a weekday. Parents who searched for a certified IB tutor in Mumbai and then booked home sessions usually find the shortlist was shaped by geography as much as by subject.

Online is the honest answer for scarce subjects and awkward addresses, and it is better than its reputation for some work and worse for others. An IB online tutor in Mumbai can be a specialist in DP Economics Higher Level or Spanish B or Global Politics who simply does not exist within forty minutes of your flat, and for essay feedback, mark-scheme walkthroughs, IA structuring and TOK discussion a shared screen is genuinely equal to a shared table. It is weaker for a child who needs somebody sitting beside them to stay on task, and weaker again for early MYP, where attention management is half the job. The trade-off is explicit: you gain the right specialist and lose some of the supervision.

Hybrid is what most of our longer arrangements settle into after a few months, usually without anybody planning it. One home session a week for the hard, supervised work and one online session for review, feedback and question practice keeps the specialist and cuts the travel, which also keeps the slot alive through the monsoon. For a Thane family on Ghodbunder Road or a Panvel family at the far end of the Harbour Line, hybrid is frequently the only arrangement that lasts a full academic year. IB home tuition in Mumbai does not have to be all or nothing, and the mode should be chosen on your child's attention span and your address, not on whose profile carried more paperwork.

  • Home sessions expose unopened folders and unmarked worksheets that a screen hides
  • An evening home slot blocks about two hours of a tutor's travel time
  • Online opens up scarce subjects: Economics HL, Spanish B, Global Politics
  • Online is weaker for early MYP and for children who drift off task
  • Hybrid keeps the specialist, cuts the travel and survives the monsoon
  • Choose the mode on your address and your child, not on paperwork

What can you check yourself before the first home tuition session?

Four things, and all four take one conversation. Ask to see the degree certificate and note the awarding university. Ask for the teaching qualification, if there is one, and who awarded it. Ask which school, which subject and which years for every teaching post claimed. Ask for one reference you can telephone. Everything a search for a certified IB tutor in Mumbai is trying to establish is contained in those four answers.

Take them one at a time, because each has a failure mode. A degree in the subject is the easiest to confirm and the most frequently glossed over: a tutor teaching DP Physics HL should hold a degree with real physics in it, and a general science or engineering degree is fine while a management degree with a school-level physics background is a different proposition you should at least know about. A teaching qualification, a Bachelor of Education, a Postgraduate Certificate in Education or a university-awarded certificate in international education, is a genuine credential, and the awarding body is printed on it. A verifiable posting at a named school is the strongest single signal we see, because it has a date, a place and colleagues attached. Examining or moderating work done for a board under contract is real work, and a tutor who has done it will describe the contract rather than wave a title.

How you ask matters more than most parents expect, because the polite version gets better answers than the suspicious version. Try: may I see the degree certificate, just so I have the subject right. Try: which school was that, and which years were you there. Try: is there a parent or a head of department I could speak to for five minutes. A good tutor answers all three without tensing up, and several will offer the reference before you ask. A tutor who deflects to a certificate, who cannot name the years, or who explains that the school prefers staff not to be contacted, has given you your answer, and you have lost nothing but a cup of tea.

On our side we check identity, the degrees and teaching qualifications claimed, and the school postings we can confirm, and we write the result on the profile in plain words rather than converting it into a badge. What we cannot do is certify anybody, because no such certification exists to pass on, and we will not describe a tutor as IB certified, IB approved or IB endorsed, as none of our tutors is any of those things and neither is any tutor on any platform. We also cannot verify something a tutor has not evidenced, so where a claim is unconfirmed the profile says unconfirmed. If you ever see a tutor profile anywhere that claims board certification for an individual, treat the whole profile as unverified until somebody shows you who issued it.

  • Ask to see the degree certificate and read the awarding university's name
  • Ask who awarded any teaching qualification, then confirm that body exists
  • Ask which school, which subject and which years for each post claimed
  • Ask for one reference you can telephone, not an emailed testimonial
  • Treat unconfirmed claims as unconfirmed, including on our own profiles
  • No platform can supply board certification for an individual tutor

How to read a tutor's certificate, and what an honest claim sounds like

Start with the issuer, because that is where almost every misleading certificate gives itself away. A legitimate document names the body that awarded it, and that body can be found, telephoned or looked up in thirty seconds. A university prints its own name and a degree title. A teacher-training authority prints its own name. An IB workshop record names the IB, names the subject, names the category of workshop and names the date, and describes attendance at professional development, which is a precise and limited thing. The documents that mean nothing are the ones with a crest, a ribbon, a flourish of serif type and either no issuing body at all or a body whose name sounds official and returns nothing when you search it. An unnamed issuer is not a formality. It is the whole content of the document.

Then listen to the sentence. An honest claim sounds like this: I taught this subject at an IB school for four years, I attended the subject workshop the school sent me to, and I have marked coursework against these criteria. Every clause in that sentence is checkable and none of it overstates anything. A dishonest claim sounds like this: I am an IB certified tutor. That sentence asserts a credential that does not exist, implies the IB has assessed and approved the speaker, and cannot be tested because there is no issuer to test it against. The grey zone sits between them, in phrases like IB trained or IB qualified, which are sometimes a loose and forgivable shorthand for having attended a workshop and sometimes a deliberate upgrade of attendance into approval. The way to resolve the grey zone is one question, asked pleasantly: trained by whom, and in what year.

Three more patterns are worth recognising. Workshop attendance presented as a tutoring credential is the common one, and the giveaway is that the document describes a two or three day event while the claim describes a standing qualification. School employment presented as board approval is the second: working at an authorised IB school means the school was authorised, and the authorisation belongs to the school and stays with the school when the teacher leaves. The third is a certificate for a subject or programme other than the one being taught, which is easy to miss when you are reading a photograph on a phone: a PYP workshop record does not support a claim to teach DP Mathematics Analysis and Approaches, and an IGCSE workshop record is not a DP credential. Read which programme and which subject is printed on it, not just the logo at the top.

The conclusion is the constructive part, and it is the only test we would urge on every parent reading this. A tutor's demonstrated ability to mark your child's actual work against the published criteria tells you more than every certificate they own put together, so ask them to do it. Give them one recent piece with the school's grade covered, ask which criterion is losing the marks, ask what the next band up would require, and ask what they would have the child change in the next draft. The tutor who has really taught the subject will reach for the criteria by name, point at a specific paragraph and tell you something you did not know about your own child's work. That is a credential, and it is the only one in this field that cannot be printed.

  • A real certificate names its issuer; an unnamed issuer means nothing at all
  • An IB workshop record states attendance, a subject, a category and a date
  • Honest: I taught this subject at an IB school and attended the workshop
  • Dishonest: I am an IB certified tutor, because no such certification exists
  • IB trained is shorthand or inflation; ask trained by whom and when
  • A school's authorisation belongs to the school, not to its former teachers

Progress, fees and the honest limits of IB tutoring in Mumbai

Progress is visible well before marks move, and knowing what to look for stops a good arrangement being cancelled too early. At four weeks you should not expect a grade change; you should expect your child to describe what the next band on a criterion requires, to stop guessing at command terms like evaluate and discuss, and to arrive at a session with a specific question rather than a general gloom. At one term you should see it in marked work: fewer marks lost to structure and presentation, an IA draft that exists rather than being promised, and a teacher comment that has changed its tone. At one full examination cycle you can fairly judge the arrangement on results, and not reasonably before that. We do not guarantee grades, and anybody who does is selling you something other than tutoring.

What IB tuition fees in Mumbai depend on is nothing to do with a certificate on a wall. Rates move on the board and the level, because DP Higher Level work with an IA attached is a different job from MYP Year 3 support. They move on subject scarcity, which is why a DP Spanish B or Higher Level Economics specialist costs more than a Mathematics tutor in a city with many of them. They move on travel, because a tutor giving up two hours around a Kasarvadavali or Panvel slot prices that time in. They move on session length and frequency, and a ninety-minute session is not simply one and a half times a sixty-minute one in value, since the longer session is where real IA work happens. Nobody should quote you a figure before knowing those five things, and a quote that arrives before the questions is a quote for something generic.

The honest limits deserve stating plainly, because the alternative is a disappointed family in March. A tutor cannot repair a Year 11 foundation in six weeks before an IGCSE paper, and pretending otherwise wastes money that could have gone on a longer arrangement started earlier. A tutor cannot submit coursework or sit a paper, and the internal assessment marks that were set in December are set. A tutor cannot make a child work who has decided not to, although a good one often finds the reason the child stopped, which is sometimes the most valuable thing we are paid for. And a tutor cannot change the school's deadline structure, only help your child get ahead of it.

When a tutor is not working out, say so early and say so to us rather than to the tutor alone. Three sessions is enough to know whether the room works. Tell us what is wrong in concrete terms, meaning the tutor talks for fifty minutes of the hour, or they will not touch the IA, or your daughter has stopped coming out of her room on Thursdays, and we will propose a different person rather than defend the first. Changing a tutor in week four is ordinary and costs nothing in lost time. Changing one in February costs a term. The parents who get the most out of this platform are the ones who tell us early and specifically, and the awkwardness of that conversation lasts about ninety seconds.

  • Four weeks: better questions and command-term fluency, not a grade change
  • One term: fewer structural marks lost, an IA draft that actually exists
  • One examination cycle: the first fair point to judge on results
  • Fees track board, level, subject scarcity, travel distance and session length
  • Nobody can guarantee grades, and no tutor can submit or sit the assessment
  • Raise a mismatch at three sessions, in concrete terms, and ask for a change

Booking home classes with a verified IB tutor in Mumbai

Getting started takes one message and about ten minutes of preparation at your end. Put together three things before you write: your child's board, year, subject and level, meaning something like DP Year 1 Chemistry Higher Level or IGCSE Year 10 Mathematics Extended; one recent piece of marked work, photographed, with the school's comment visible; and the two evenings or weekend mornings that genuinely work at your address, not the ones that would work if the traffic behaved. Those three things let us shortlist properly instead of asking you five rounds of questions.

What comes back is two or three tutor profiles with the qualifications written out in full: degree and awarding university, teaching qualification where there is one, schools taught at with the years, boards and levels taught, and anything we could not confirm marked as unconfirmed. Read the history rather than the headline. Then pick one and book a paid first session, which we would rather you treated as an assessment of the tutor than as a free sample of your child.

The first session has a shape, and you should hold the tutor to it. The first half is diagnostic: the tutor works through the marked piece you supplied, identifies which criterion or paper skill is costing the marks and says so in words you can repeat to the school. The second half is a plan tied to your child's actual calendar, naming which fortnight the IA draft has to exist in and what happens weekly between now and then. Before the tutor leaves, ask the question this page has been building towards: mark this script against the published criteria and tell me which band it sits in and why. Then decide. If the fit is wrong, tell us within the first three sessions and we will propose somebody else without an argument.

  • Send board, year, subject and level in your first message
  • Attach one photographed piece of recent marked work with the teacher's comment
  • Name two evenings or weekend mornings that work at your real address
  • Read the written history on each profile, not the headline summary
  • Book a paid first session and treat it as your assessment of the tutor
  • Ask the tutor to band one script against the criteria before you commit
FAQs

Mumbai tutoring — questions parents ask

Is there such a thing as an IB certified tutor?+

No. There is no such thing as a certified IB tutor in Mumbai or anywhere else, because the International Baccalaureate does not certify, license, approve or register private tutors. The IB authorises schools to run its programmes and it runs professional development workshops for teachers at those schools, and that is the extent of it. Nobody sits an IB tutoring examination, no register of approved tutors exists to be searched, and no platform can obtain IB certification for the people on its list. If a tutor, an agency or a website uses that phrase, treat it as marketing language rather than a credential and ask who the issuing body is.

Are IB Gram's tutors IB certified or IB approved?+

No, and we will not describe them that way. IB Gram tutors are verified by IB Gram, which means we check identity, the degrees and teaching qualifications they claim, and the school postings we can confirm, and we write the outcome on the profile in plain words. They are not IB certified, IB approved or IB endorsed, because no tutor anywhere is: the certification does not exist to be held. IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with the IB organisation, Cambridge International Education or any school. We also do not guarantee grades. What we can do is show you a checkable history and let you test the teaching yourself.

A tutor sent me a photo of an IB certificate. How do I read it?+

Read the issuing body first, then the programme and subject, then the date. A genuine IB workshop record names the IB, names the subject, names the workshop category and gives a date, and what it records is attendance at professional development for teachers, which is useful but is not a tutoring qualification. If the document carries a crest and a signature but no identifiable issuer, or an official-sounding body that returns nothing when you search for it, it means nothing at all. Also check the programme matches: a Primary Years Programme workshop record does not support a claim to teach Diploma Programme Mathematics, and an IGCSE record is not a DP credential.

My tutor says they are IB trained. Is that the same as certified?+

No, and the gap between those two words is worth one polite question. IB trained is usually loose shorthand for having attended an IB professional development workshop while employed at an authorised school, which is a real and useful thing to have done. It is not a certification, it is not inspected or renewed when the teacher starts tutoring privately, and it carries no authority over a private arrangement. Ask who provided the training and in which year. A tutor who answers with a school, a subject and a date is being straight with you. A tutor who cannot name any of the three is describing something that did not happen the way they implied.

Does teaching at an IB school make a tutor IB certified?+

No. The authorisation belongs to the school, not to the individual, and it stays with the school when the teacher leaves. What a posting at an authorised IB school does give you is the single most useful checkable credential in this field: a named institution, a named subject and a set of years, all of which you can confirm with two questions and one telephone call. That is far more informative than any certificate, which is why our profiles list schools and dates rather than badges. Ask which school, which subject and which years, and ask for a colleague or former parent you can speak to briefly.

What qualifications should I actually ask for?+

Four: a degree in or close to the subject with the awarding university named, a teaching qualification such as a Bachelor of Education or a Postgraduate Certificate in Education where the tutor has one, a verifiable teaching post at a named school with the years attached, and examining or moderating work done for a board under contract if they have done any. Those four exist, are issued by identifiable bodies and can be checked. A tutoring certificate from an unnamed organisation is not on the list. Ask for the four, in that order, and accept unconfirmed as an honest answer where a tutor cannot evidence something.

Can a tutor with no IB school experience still teach DP well?+

Yes, with one condition: they must know the assessment model as well as the subject. A university-level mathematician who has never worked inside the Diploma Programme can be excellent once they have learned how the exploration is marked and how the command terms behave in a paper, and some of the strongest tutors we place came in that way. The test is not where they worked but whether they can band a script against the published criteria and explain what the next band requires. Ask them to do exactly that with a piece of your child's marked work before you commit to a weekly slot.

Should I really ask a tutor to mark my child's script before booking?+

Yes, and it is the most useful fifteen minutes you will spend on this decision. Cover the school's grade, hand over one recent piece, and ask which criterion is costing marks, what the next band would require and what should change in the next draft. A tutor who has genuinely taught the subject reaches for the criteria by name, points at a specific paragraph and tells you something new about work you have already read. A tutor who talks in generalities about hard work and confidence has answered you too. No certificate produces that information, and every tutor we list expects the request.

What do IB tuition fees in Mumbai depend on?+

Five things, and a tutor's paperwork is not among them. Rates move on the board and the level, since Diploma Programme Higher Level work with an internal assessment attached is a heavier job than Middle Years Programme support. They move on subject scarcity, so a Spanish B or Higher Level Economics specialist sits above a Mathematics tutor. They move on travel, because an evening slot in Kharghar or Kasarvadavali costs a tutor about two hours. They move on session length and on frequency. We will not quote a figure before knowing those five, and you should be wary of anyone who does.

Can a home tutor reach Kasarvadavali on Ghodbunder Road for a 7pm weekday session?+

Sometimes, and you should insist on knowing where the tutor lives before agreeing. A tutor near Thane station reaches Kasarvadavali in about twenty minutes off-peak and close to an hour in the evening peak, so a 7pm start is realistic for a Thane-based tutor and fragile for anybody travelling from Mulund or the Western Suburbs. In practice we match Thane addresses to Thane tutors and keep cross-city travel for weekend mornings. If a slot that far out is the only one available, a hybrid pattern of one home session and one online session usually holds together where two home sessions will not.

Our building in Vashi requires a visitor gate pass. How does that work weekly?+

Register the tutor once with your society office as a recurring visitor rather than logging a fresh entry each week. Most Navi Mumbai and Thane complexes allow a standing weekly entry for tutors, music teachers and physiotherapists once a resident has sponsored them in writing, and some ask for an identity document copy to keep on file. Do it before the first session, not during it, because fifteen minutes lost at the gate out of a sixty-minute slot is a real cost. Also tell the tutor which gate and which tower, and whether service lifts are restricted during particular hours, which catches out newcomers in larger complexes.

Where should the sessions happen inside the flat, and should a parent sit in?+

Use the dining table or any room with a door, a hard surface and a plug, and sit in for the first ten minutes of the first session only. The dining table beats a bedroom because it discourages a child from half-lying on the bed, and a door matters more than space does in a Mumbai flat where the television and the kitchen share a wall with everything. Stay for the diagnostic opening so you hear what the tutor identifies, then leave, because a thirteen-year-old performs for an audience instead of working. Ask for a two-line message after each session instead of supervising it.

Find your Mumbai tutor

Send one message with your child's board, year, subject and level, a photograph of one recent piece of marked work, and the two evenings that genuinely work at your address. We come back with two or three tutor profiles showing degrees, teaching qualifications, schools taught at and years, with anything unconfirmed marked as unconfirmed. You book a paid first session, ask the tutor to band that script against the published criteria, and decide from there.
