How we shortlist a Cambridge IGCSE Physical Science 0652 tutor in Mumbai

A request for a Cambridge IGCSE Physical Science 0652 tutor in Mumbai usually arrives as two or three lines from a parent: the child's year, the school, the grade on the last report, and the area. Before anyone is shortlisted we add one question that changes everything downstream. Is the child entered for the combined award under the code 0652, or for separate Physics and Chemistry entries that carry their own codes and their own grades? Parents are rarely told the code at admission, and the school's subject options sheet is often the only place it appears in writing. A tutor who prepares a student for two separate science grades will teach breadth the 0652 student does not need, and will skip the cross-subject question styles the combined paper leans on.

Once the entry is confirmed we look at the diagnostic, not the CV. Every candidate is asked to mark one unseen answer from the child's own exercise book or a past paper attempt, and to say in writing what the student has misunderstood. For Physical Science that answer is almost always revealing. A student who writes that a reaction is exothermic because heat is given out has restated the definition and not explained the energy change, and a tutor who cannot see the difference in thirty seconds will not fix it in a term.

The shortlist we send is deliberately short. Two or three names, each with the tier they normally teach, the areas of Mumbai they can reach on a weekday evening, and a note on what they said about your child's script. You speak to them yourself before anything is booked. A Physical Science (0652) IGCSE Years 9-11 tutor Mumbai families shortlist this way starts work already knowing what the first hour is for. The numbered process below is what happens between your enquiry and that first session, and it runs the same whether you are in Colaba or Kasarvadavali.

  • 1. Send the year, the school, the subject code and your area
  • 2. We confirm whether the entry is 0652 or separate science codes
  • 3. Shortlisted tutors mark one piece of your child's recent work
  • 4. You speak to two or three tutors and choose one yourself
  • 5. The first session is diagnostic, with a written summary to you after

Core or Extended: which 0652 route is your child actually entered for?

Cambridge IGCSE Physical Science 0652 is offered at two tiers. Core covers the foundation content and caps the grade a candidate can be awarded; Extended adds supplementary content and opens the higher grades. Your child's school chooses the tier, usually during Year 10, and the choice is recorded on the entry the examinations officer submits. Ask them for it in writing.

That tier decision is the most consequential thing on this page and most families meet it late. A student placed on Core because of a weak Year 9 report may be perfectly capable of Extended by the second term of Year 10, and the entry can often still be changed before the school's own internal deadline. The reverse happens just as often. A student on Extended who is bleeding marks on the supplementary Physics content may be better served by a secure Core grade than a scraped Extended one, particularly when science is not the subject carrying a university application. We do not make that call and neither should a tutor. The subject teacher and the head of science know the cohort; a tutor's job is to tell you honestly whether the gap is closable in the months that remain.

Where IB Gram helps is in testing the assumption rather than accepting it. A tutor who teaches both tiers can set an Extended-standard question in week two and show you exactly what came back, which is a far better basis for a conversation with the school than a report comment. An IGCSE private tutor Mumbai families engage for this purpose is being hired to produce evidence, not reassurance. Children moving into Mumbai from another system meet a second version of the question, because a child arriving from a CBSE Class 9 into a Cambridge Year 10 has usually covered more Chemistry theory and far less practical write-up work than the classmates sitting around them.

  • Ask the examinations officer for the tier on the submitted entry
  • Check the school's internal deadline for changing a tier
  • Core caps the top grade available; Extended opens it
  • A Year 9 report predicts Extended readiness poorly
  • Request one Extended-standard question inside the first fortnight

What the code 0652 pins down, and what the practical paper asks

Physical Science 0652 is Physics and Chemistry taught and examined together for one grade. There is no Biology in it. That one sentence explains most of the confusion we field, because the school timetable may still say Science, the book on the shelf may be a combined-science text written for a different code, and the child may be sitting in a room alongside students entered for separate subjects with a different syllabus in front of them.

The content divides into a Physics half covering motion, forces, energy transfer, thermal physics, waves, electricity and magnetism and atomic physics, and a Chemistry half covering particles and states, atoms and bonding, stoichiometry, acids and bases, the periodic table, metals and the organic and industrial topics. What makes 0652 its own problem is that both halves are marked into a single grade. A student who is confident with circuits and lost in mole calculations does not get to average out across two certificates the way a separate-subject candidate can. The weaker half sets the grade, and a Physical Science (0652) tutor in Mumbai who does not establish which half that is in the first fortnight is guessing for the rest of the term.

The alternative-to-practical paper is the component that catches strong theory students. It does not ask a student to perform an experiment. It asks them to read someone else's method, spot the variable that was not controlled, read a scale correctly, tabulate and plot data, identify a source of error that actually limits the result, and suggest an improvement more specific than repeating the experiment. Those are taught skills and they are examined in a recognisable house style, which is why a few weeks of focused work on them often shows up faster than a few weeks of content revision. Do not take a paper number, duration or weighting from any brief, blog or old guide as current. Download the syllabus for your child's exam series from the Cambridge International Education website, or ask the school's examinations officer which components your child is entered for.

  • Physics and Chemistry only; 0652 carries no Biology content
  • One grade spans both halves, so the weaker half dominates
  • The practical paper tests reading a method, not performing one
  • Error questions need a specific error, not generic repetition
  • Mole and stoichiometry reasoning is the most common Chemistry gap
  • Confirm components against the syllabus for your child's series

Where across Mumbai we place Physical Science tutors

Physical Science is a narrower pool than Maths, so geography matters more than parents expect. A Cambridge IGCSE Physical Science 0652 home tutor in Mumbai is matched along a corridor rather than across the city, because a tutor who loses ninety minutes each way cancels by week six and nobody is served by that. Searches like "IGCSE tutors near me Mumbai" are really asking this question, and across Mumbai, Maharashtra the honest answer is that the nearest tutor and the right tutor are sometimes two different people.

South Mumbai requests from Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Walkeshwar, Worli and Peddar Road are matched within the island. The distances look trivial and are not: the Haji Ali and Peddar Road signals can swallow forty minutes in the evening peak, though the Coastal Road has changed the Worli to Nariman Point run and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link brings Bandra tutors closer than the map suggests. The Western Line into Churchgate and Grant Road and the Harbour Line down to Dockyard Road carry tutors who do not drive, and Metro Line 3 has made BKC to Cuffe Parade a realistic weekday hop. In the Western Suburbs, from Bandra and Khar West up through Santacruz, Juhu, Andheri, Goregaon, Malad, Kandivali, Borivali and Dahisar, we match along the Western Line and the Western Express Highway rather than across them. Metro Lines 2A and 7 have made the Dahisar to Andheri stretch bearable, and Link Road is the fallback when the highway is stationary.

The Central Suburbs sit on the Central Line and the Eastern Express Highway, with Powai and Chandivali hanging off JVLR. Powai has no station of its own, so a tutor reaches Hiranandani Gardens by road from Andheri East, Kanjurmarg or Ghatkopar, with Metro Line 1 from Ghatkopar to Andheri as the usual spine and the SCLR as the Chembur link. The Eastern Suburbs run from Chembur and Govandi through Vikhroli and Bhandup to Mulund on the Central and Harbour lines, and the Eastern Freeway makes Chembur to Fort faster than it looks. Navi Mumbai is matched node to node across Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar and Panvel along Palm Beach Road and the Sion-Panvel Highway; the Atal Setu has shortened the crossing, but pulling a tutor over the creek for a 7pm weekday lesson rarely survives a full term. Thane runs west to east from the station across Pokhran Road, Majiwada and Ghodbunder Road, and Ghodbunder sets the schedule: twenty minutes to Kasarvadavali off-peak and close to an hour in the evening. The Trans-Harbour Line links Thane to Vashi for tutors who commute by train.

  • South Mumbai: Colaba, Cuffe Parade and Worli matched within the island
  • Western Suburbs: Bandra, Khar West, Andheri, Malad, Borivali, Dahisar
  • Central Suburbs: Powai and Chandivali reached by road off JVLR
  • Eastern Suburbs: Chembur, Vikhroli, Bhandup and Mulund on two lines
  • Navi Mumbai: Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar and Panvel, node to node
  • Thane: station side, Pokhran Road, Majiwada and Ghodbunder Road

Which months does the Mumbai school calendar make hardest for 0652?

October to November and January to February. Mumbai's Cambridge schools run first-term assessments and the Diwali break almost back to back in October, then internal mocks for Year 11 in January ahead of the main exam series. Those are the two windows in which a Physical Science student either consolidates or quietly falls behind.

The schools families here use set those pressure points. Cathedral and John Connon School, Bombay International School, B.D. Somani International School and Activity High School run South Mumbai on calendars that place mocks early. Jamnabai Narsee International School and Utpal Shanghvi Global School in Juhu, Bombay Cambridge International School in Andheri East, Billabong High International School, Thakur International School in Kandivali East and JBCN International School, Borivali cover the Western Suburbs. Hiranandani Foundation School in Powai, NES International School in Mulund West and JBCN International School, Chembur serve the Central and Eastern Suburbs, while Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania School in Thane and D.Y. Patil International School in Nerul, Navi Mumbai anchor the outer zones. IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with any of these schools; we name them because their calendars are what a tutor has to plan around.

What that means week to week: a Year 11 student in Mulund sitting the February series has roughly eleven usable teaching weeks between the Diwali break and her mocks, and heavy monsoon weeks in September can remove two of them if her tutor crosses the Eastern Express Highway to get there. Begin a Physical Science engagement in June or July and those weeks are spare capacity you never need. Begin in December and they are the entire plan. Mumbai's academic year also carries two or three week-long gaps around local festivals that appear on no examination calendar at all, and a weekly home tuition slot needs rescheduling around them rather than quietly abandoning.

  • October: first-term assessments collide with the Diwali break
  • January: Year 11 internal mocks set the real revision deadline
  • February and March: the exam series most Mumbai schools sit
  • A June or July start buys a year of spare weeks
  • Monsoon weeks cost travel reliability, not teaching quality

Home tuition first, then online: choosing a format in Mumbai

Most families who book Cambridge IGCSE Physical Science 0652 home tuition in Mumbai do it for one reason: the tutor sits beside the child and watches the working as it is written. In a subject where marks are lost in the setting out of a calculation rather than in the final number, that is worth a great deal. Home tuition is IB Gram's lead service for 0652 and it is what we try to match first.

The honest trade-off is pool size. Physical Science specialists are fewer than Maths or Biology specialists, and insisting on a tutor who can reach Kharghar or Kasarvadavali by 6.30pm every Tuesday narrows the list again. Online delivery removes the travel radius altogether and makes a tutor in Thane available to a family in Cuffe Parade; a document camera or a phone propped over a page handles most of the handwriting problem, and a recorded session earns its keep in revision weeks. Our online tutor page covers those mechanics properly rather than in passing. Hybrid is where most of our longer engagements end up: Physical Science (0652) home classes Mumbai families book in the fortnight before an assessment, with online weeks in between, which is also usually the cheaper shape.

Two rules of thumb we apply when a parent asks us to choose. If the student is disorganised rather than weak, the physical presence of a home tutor does more than any software will. If the student is capable and the gap is specific, say stoichiometry or electromagnetic induction, the strongest available subject specialist working online beats a nearer generalist every time. We will tell you which we think applies after the first session, and we will say it even when it points away from the more expensive option.

  • Home tuition first: the tutor sees the working being written
  • Online widens the specialist pool beyond any travel radius
  • Hybrid: home sessions near assessments, online in ordinary weeks
  • Disorganised student, choose presence. Specific gap, choose the specialist
  • Travel distance and session length both move what you pay

How is a 0652 tutor checked before you meet them?

Three checks, in this order. Identity and qualification documents are collected and verified. Subject competence is tested on real IGCSE material rather than claimed on a CV. Teaching history is confirmed with at least one family or institution the tutor has actually worked with. Nobody reaches your shortlist on the strength of a self-description.

For a Cambridge IGCSE Physical Science 0652 tutor in Mumbai the subject test is deliberately narrow. We ask the candidate to produce a mark-scheme-style breakdown of an alternative-to-practical question, because that is where generalists come apart. A tutor who teaches Physics well and has not looked at a Chemistry practical write-up in years will give a plausible answer that misses what the examiner is paying for. We also ask what they would do with a Core student whose school thinks she should stay on Core, and we listen for whether the answer is about the student or about selling more sessions.

Then there is what you should check yourself, which matters more than our process does. Ask the tutor which exam series your child is sitting; if they do not know, they have not read the brief. Ask for the first session to end with three sentences in writing about what the diagnostic showed. Be wary of anyone offering a guaranteed grade: IB Gram does not guarantee grades, no honest tutor can, and a tutor who leads with that is selling confidence instead of teaching. Parents often ask us for the best IGCSE tutor in Mumbai, and the more useful question is which tutor has taught this exact code to a student in this exact situation. Ask who you contact when a session is missed, and settle that before any money changes hands.

  • Identity and qualification documents verified before any parent contact
  • Competence tested on alternative-to-practical material, not on a CV
  • One previous family or institution contacted about teaching history
  • Ask your tutor which exam series your child is entered for
  • Ask for three written sentences after the diagnostic session
  • Settle the missed-session rule before the first payment

One grade for two sciences: what that does to revision

The structural fact about 0652 is that two sciences are condensed into one grade, and it changes how revision should be sequenced. A separate-sciences candidate can bank a strong Physics grade and absorb a weaker Chemistry one. A Physical Science candidate cannot. The single grade is dragged down by whichever half is weaker, so the first job of any tutor is to find out which half that is and then spend disproportionate time there, even when the student would much rather do the part she enjoys.

In practice the split is predictable. Students from a mathematical background are comfortable with the Physics calculations and lose marks in Chemistry on mole reasoning, ionic equations, and the written explanation questions where the mark is awarded for a chain of cause and effect rather than for a correct end result. Students from a verbal or biology-leaning background usually handle Chemistry description well and come apart on rearranging formulae, unit prefixes, and the graph work in waves and electricity. A diagnostic built only from content questions misses this, because both groups can recite definitions fluently. A diagnostic built from past-paper questions finds it inside one session.

The second structural feature is the cross-over question. Because both halves share one syllabus, an examiner can set energy, particle behaviour or atomic structure in either register, and a student who has learned the Physics vocabulary of energy transfer and the Chemistry vocabulary of exothermic change as two unrelated topics will not notice that she is being asked the same thing twice. Teaching that respects the code builds those bridges on purpose: kinetic theory and states of matter in the same block, electricity and electrolysis in the same fortnight, atomic structure taught once and then used on both sides. This is also why a tutor who only ever taught separate sciences needs a few weeks to adjust, and why we ask candidates about it directly.

The third is practical technique, and it is the part most amenable to short-term work. Reading a scale, tabulating results with consistent significant figures, drawing a line of best fit, describing a control variable and naming the error that actually limits a result are a finite list of skills. A student who has never been taught them explicitly can improve markedly in a few weeks of focused home classes, which is why we often put that paper first when an engagement starts late in Year 11. Content takes months. Practical technique takes sessions. Any claim about what that is worth in marks should be checked against the current syllabus for your child's series rather than taken from anybody's sales page, ours included.

  • Find the weaker half first, then overweight it deliberately
  • Maths-strong students usually lose marks on mole reasoning
  • Teach kinetic theory and states of matter in one block
  • Practical technique improves faster than content coverage does
  • A late Year 11 start should begin with the practical paper
  • Separate-science tutors need weeks to adjust to one combined grade

What progress looks like at four weeks, one term and one series

At four weeks you should see diagnosis, not grades. A tutor who has used four sessions properly can tell you which half of 0652 is weak, name two or three specific gaps, and show you a past-paper answer that is better set out than the one from week one. If after a month nobody can tell you anything more precise than improving, that is your signal to ask harder questions rather than to wait another month.

At one term the test is a school assessment your tutor did not set. A grade that moves is good news. Working that is cleaner, units that are present, and explanation questions that reach a second sentence are better news, because those are the things that hold under exam pressure. Progress in science tutoring is rarely linear either. It is common for a student to look worse at six weeks than at three, because she has stopped guessing and started showing method, and partially correct working scores less than a lucky answer once did.

Across a full exam series, the honest position is that a focused engagement often moves a student a grade band, sometimes two where the problem was technique rather than understanding, and occasionally not at all. IB Gram does not guarantee grades and will not pretend to. What we will do is tell you at the six-week mark whether the match is working, and we would rather lose a booking than carry an arrangement that is not helping a child. If the fit is wrong, say so plainly. We re-shortlist, and the replacement tutor receives the previous tutor's written notes so your child is not made to sit the same diagnostic twice.

  • Four weeks: named gaps and cleaner working, not a new grade
  • One term: judged on an assessment your tutor did not set
  • A dip at six weeks often means method replacing guesswork
  • One series: a band of movement is realistic, never promised
  • Tell us at six weeks if nothing has changed

Starting home tuition for Physical Science 0652 in Mumbai

Have three things ready and the first week moves quickly. The subject code from the school's entry or options sheet, the last two pieces of marked science work with the teacher's comments still on them, and two evening windows that genuinely work in your household rather than the ones that look tidy on a calendar.

The first session is diagnostic and should feel slightly uncomfortable for the student. The tutor sets questions above the level she is currently scoring, including one alternative-to-practical item, and watches how the working is laid out rather than only marking it right or wrong. Nothing is taught from the textbook in that hour. You should receive a short written note afterwards covering which half is weaker, the two gaps to attack first, and whether the tier the school has entered still looks right. If you are in Powai, Chembur or Thane the tutor will also tell you honestly what time they can reliably arrive on a weekday, because a slot that depends on clear traffic is a slot that will be missed.

After that, a weekly rhythm. One session a week holds ground, two move it, and in the eight weeks before a series most families go to two plus one paper under timed conditions at the weekend. What you pay depends on the tier, on how much 0652 specifically the tutor has taught, on travel and on session length: a Cambridge IGCSE Physical Science 0652 home tutor in Mumbai travelling in from another zone costs more than one already on your corridor, and you agree the rate and the cancellation rule in writing before the first visit.

  • Bring the subject code, not just the subject name
  • Bring two pieces of marked work with the teacher's comments
  • The first session is diagnostic and ends with written findings
  • One session a week holds, two sessions move the grade
  • Agree the rate and the missed-session rule in writing
FAQs

Mumbai tutoring — questions parents ask

Is Physical Science 0652 the same as taking Physics and Chemistry separately?+

No. Physical Science 0652 combines Physics and Chemistry into one course assessed for a single grade, with no Biology content, whereas separate entries give a separate grade for each subject under its own code. The practical difference for revision is large: a combined candidate cannot offset a weak half against a strong one, and the papers set cross-over material that moves between the Physics and Chemistry registers. Confirm which route your child is on by asking the school's examinations officer for the codes on the submitted entry, in writing, rather than inferring it from the timetable or the textbook.

Should my child be on Core or Extended for 0652?+

That is the school's decision, and it should be reviewed rather than accepted silently. Core covers foundation content and caps the top grade available; Extended adds supplementary content and opens the higher grades. The useful move is evidence: ask a tutor to set one Extended-standard question in the first fortnight and look at what comes back, then take that to the subject teacher before the school's internal deadline for changing an entry. Sometimes the answer is to move up. Sometimes a secure Core grade genuinely serves a child better than a scraped Extended one.

What is the alternative-to-practical paper, and can it actually be taught?+

It is the component that tests experimental skills on paper instead of in a laboratory, and yes, it is the most teachable part of the course. A student reads someone else's method and then has to read a scale, tabulate and plot results, identify the variable that was not controlled, name the error that genuinely limits the result, and propose a specific improvement. These are a finite set of techniques with a recognisable examiner style, so progress often shows within weeks. Check the component numbering and structure against the syllabus for your child's own exam series.

Can a tutor travel to Kharghar or Kasarvadavali for an evening slot?+

Yes, but only if the tutor already lives on that side of the city. We match a home tutor for Physical Science (0652) Mumbai families in Navi Mumbai and Thane from within those zones rather than sending someone across the creek or down Ghodbunder Road in peak hour. A tutor based in Belapur reaches Kharghar comfortably at 6.30pm; the same tutor coming from Chembur does not, however willing she is in week one. If no local specialist is free at your time, we will say so and offer an online or hybrid pattern instead of promising a commute that will fail by week six.

Does a tutor need society gate clearance for a weekly home session in Powai?+

Usually yes, and it is worth sorting in advance. An IGCSE home tutor in Mumbai working a standing weekly slot is far better registered once with the society office as a recurring visitor than signed in as a guest every week, which in large Powai and Hiranandani Gardens complexes can cost ten minutes at the gate each time. Tell the tutor which tower and gate to use, whether a vehicle sticker or an app-based pass is needed, and who at home will approve the entry if you are late back from work. Most missed first sessions we hear about were gate problems, not teaching problems.

What do IGCSE tuition fees in Mumbai depend on for a subject like 0652?+

Five things, none of which we can quote as a single number honestly. The tier being taught, how much Physical Science the tutor has specifically taught rather than general science, scarcity in your area, the travel involved, and the length and frequency of sessions. A combined-science specialist is a smaller pool than a Maths tutor, so a code-specific request in an outer node usually prices higher than a general science request in Bandra. Ask for the range for your area before you commit, and get the cancellation and missed-session terms in the same message.

My child is strong in Physics and weak in Chemistry. Does that matter with one grade?+

It matters more than it would with separate entries, because one grade covers both halves and the weaker half pulls it down. A separate-subject candidate can carry an uneven profile; a 0652 candidate cannot. In your case the sessions should be weighted towards Chemistry even though your child will resist it, and the specific suspects are mole reasoning, ionic equations and the explanation questions that award marks for a chain of reasoning rather than a final answer. A good tutor will confirm the weak half from past-paper work in the first two sessions instead of assuming it from a report.

Does online tutoring really work for a practical-skills paper?+

For this particular paper, better than you would expect. An IGCSE online tutor in Mumbai teaching alternative-to-practical material is working with printed methods, tables, graphs and error discussion, all of which share cleanly on a screen with a document camera or a phone over the page. Where online is weaker is the apparatus intuition a student picks up from handling a burette or a ray box, and for a child who drifts the moment nobody is sitting beside her. Many families run both: online for ordinary weeks, a home session in the fortnight before an assessment.

We have had a month of sessions and seen no progress. What now?+

Ask for specifics before you change anything, because a month is long enough to diagnose and short enough that grades rarely move. The tutor should be able to name which half of 0652 is weak, list two or three precise gaps, and show you a piece of work that is better set out than it was in week one. If all three are missing, the problem is the match and not your child. Tell us and we re-shortlist. If all three are present but the grade has not moved, that is normal at four weeks and worth two more.

What happens if a tutor is not working out after a few weeks?+

Tell us and we replace the tutor, and the handover is the part that matters. We ask the outgoing tutor for written notes on what was covered, what the diagnostic showed and what remains open, and we pass that to the new tutor so your child is not put through the same assessment twice. There is no argument about it and you are not asked to justify the decision. A mismatch is usually about pace, manner or the gap between a Physics specialist and a combined-science course, none of which is a complaint about anyone's competence.

When should we start if my child sits the February or March series?+

Ideally in June or July of the preceding year, realistically by October, and understand what a December start buys you. Between the Diwali break and January mocks a Year 11 student in Mumbai has roughly eleven usable teaching weeks, and heavy monsoon travel in September can cost a couple more. An early start means those weeks are spare capacity and the plan survives a cancelled session. A December start means the practical-skills paper comes first, because technique moves in weeks while content coverage takes months, and there is no time to do both properly.

Does booking more sessions a week change the outcome?+

Up to a point, and not in the way most parents hope. One session a week holds ground and consolidates school teaching; two genuinely move a grade because there is time to teach, set work and review it; three usually hits diminishing returns because the student stops doing independent practice between visits. In the eight weeks before a series, two sessions plus one full paper under timed conditions at the weekend is the pattern that works most often. More hours cannot substitute for the student working alone, which is where most of the actual learning happens.

Find your Mumbai tutor

Send us your child's year, school, the subject code from the entry and your area of Mumbai, and we will come back with two or three verified Physical Science tutors rather than a long list. Each will have looked at a piece of your child's recent work. You speak to them, choose one, and the first session is diagnostic with written findings to you afterwards. If the match is wrong, tell us and we re-shortlist with notes handed over.
