Best IB Tutor in Mumbai

Parents searching for the best IB tutor in Mumbai usually want a ranking. The more useful thing is a description, because excellence in IB home tuition is visible inside sixty minutes if you know what to watch for. This page describes what a strong session actually looks like, so you can recognise it yourself.

Tutors are matched from your child's last marked script, not a profile photo
Every tutor states the board, programme, level and papers they have taught
The subject interview includes marking a real student script against published descriptors
Identity and qualification documents are checked before any home visit is scheduled

What Happens When You Ask for the Best IB Tutor in Mumbai?

The honest answer is that IB Gram cannot rank the teachers of a city for you, and any platform claiming a city-wide ranking is selling a list rather than a teacher. What we can do is start from evidence. A parent who asks us for the best IB tutor in Mumbai is asked for three things in return: the child's most recent marked script with the teacher's comments still on it, the school's assessment calendar for the term, and the subject guide or syllabus code the school is teaching from. Those three documents decide a match more reliably than any phone conversation about attitude and effort. Most parents arrive here after typing IB tutors near me into a phone in Mumbai and finding forty profiles that all read identically, which is exactly the problem a marked script solves.

The marked script does most of the work. A Year 11 Chemistry paper with full marks on the recall questions and almost nothing on the six-mark explain answers describes a different tutor from a script where the chemistry is wrong from the first line. The first child needs technique and command-word work; the second needs the content retaught. The calendar tells us how many weeks exist before the next graded piece, which changes what is realistic. The subject guide tells us which criteria the school will mark against, because a Middle Years Programme criterion task and a Diploma Programme internal assessment are not the same job even inside the same building. Only after those three readings do we look at who is free on the evening you actually want.

Shortlisting is deliberately narrow. A parent gets two or three tutors rather than a page of search results, and each profile states the board, the programme, the level and the specific papers that tutor has taught. Anyone we put forward has already marked a sample student script in front of us and said which band it sits in and why. That exercise, far more than a degree certificate, separates somebody who knows a subject from somebody who can teach it against a mark scheme. The first session is then diagnostic rather than instructional, and you are told that in advance so nobody is disappointed when no chapter gets covered.

  • 1. Send the last marked script, the term calendar and the syllabus code.
  • 2. We name the gap in writing before suggesting a single tutor.
  • 3. Two or three profiles follow, each listing boards, levels and papers taught.
  • 4. The first session diagnoses the problem; no syllabus is covered in it.
  • 5. The tutor's written read of the script reaches you before session two.

Excellence Looks Different Across the PYP, MYP, DP and IGCSE

Across the four programmes families in Mumbai, Maharashtra actually use, the same tutor behaviour looks different, because the thing being marked is different. In the Primary Years Programme (PYP) there are no papers to drill, so excellence is a tutor who asks which unit of inquiry the class is working through and then builds the reading and the number work around it. A tutor who arrives at a PYP session with a photocopied worksheet pack has skipped the only question that mattered. The parent-visible sign is simple: the child can say what the session was about in her own words, and it connects to what she is doing in class.

In the Middle Years Programme (MYP) marking is criterion-based and reported on an eight-point scale for each criterion, which is why MYP report cards baffle parents expecting percentages. An excellent MYP tutor talks in strands rather than subjects. She will say that a Sciences Criterion B task lost marks on the method description rather than on the hypothesis, and she will put the descriptor wording in front of the student so he can see the sentence he failed to satisfy. She will also say plainly that a Criterion D reflection score cannot be raised by adding more content, because reflection is marked on a different thing entirely.

In the Diploma Programme (DP) the structure is fixed and unforgiving: three Higher Level (HL) and three Standard Level (SL) subjects, an internal assessment in almost every one, plus the Extended Essay (EE) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK). Cambridge International Education's IGCSE runs on Core and Extended tiers with different paper combinations and different achievable grades. A tutor who cannot tell you whether your child is entered for the Core or the Extended paper, or which IGCSE paper carries the practical component, has not read the entry yet. Asking that one question on the first call is the cheapest filter available to a parent.

  • PYP: ask which unit of inquiry is running before buying any workbook
  • MYP: criteria A to D, eight-point bands, no percentages on the report
  • DP: three HL and three SL subjects, an internal assessment in nearly all
  • IGCSE: the Core tier caps the achievable grade, so check the entry first
  • Any tutor should know the syllabus code your school teaches from

Can the Tutor Name the Criterion Instead of Saying Add More Detail?

No, and add more detail is the clearest single sign that a tutor has not read the mark scheme. An excellent tutor names the thing: the criterion, the strand, the command word, or the marking point the answer missed. Add more detail is advice that fits every subject and therefore helps in none of them. Across all IB and IGCSE subjects any tutor in Mumbai should be able to open the published descriptors and point at the sentence your child has not yet satisfied. If the feedback could be pasted onto a History essay and a Physics calculation without editing, it is not feedback.

Command words are where most of the lost marks hide. In IGCSE Biology a question that says explain wants a mechanism and a consequence, while describe wants the observation alone, and a student who writes a beautiful description for an explain question loses the mark without ever being wrong. In DP Business Management, evaluate requires a judgement with a stated basis, not a list of advantages followed by disadvantages. In Mathematics Analysis and Approaches, hence means the previous result must be used, and ignoring it costs method marks even when the final answer is correct. A tutor who teaches this layer is teaching the thing the examiner is paid to look for.

Subject choice is the quietest work a strong tutor does, and it covers both boards. A DP1 student taking HL Chemistry because a cousin took it, with no intention of a science degree, is carrying an internal assessment and a Paper 3 that will eat the fortnight her TOK essay needs. A tutor who teaches all IB and IGCSE subjects in home classes across Mumbai sees that pattern often enough to raise it in October rather than February, when an SL swap is still available under the school's deadline. The same honesty is needed on the Core and Extended decision at IGCSE, and on Mathematics Applications versus Analysis, where the wrong pick closes university doors quietly two years later.

  • Explain wants a mechanism and a consequence; describe wants the observation only
  • Hence in Mathematics Analysis and Approaches means the previous line must be used
  • MYP Sciences Criterion B marks the method description, not the hypothesis
  • Every DP subject carries an internal assessment with its own criteria
  • Subject and tier changes close on a school deadline, not an external one

Where in Mumbai Are Genuinely Strong IB Tutors Easy to Find, and Where Are They Thin?

Supply is uneven, and a parent deserves to hear that before being told everything is available everywhere. South Mumbai, from Colaba and Cuffe Parade up through Malabar Hill, Napean Sea Road, Peddar Road and Worli, holds the densest cluster of experienced Diploma Programme teachers in the city, largely because the oldest IGCSE and DP schools sit there. The constraint here is not supply but movement: the Western Line terminates at Churchgate, Metro Line 3 is still bedding in along the Cuffe Parade to BKC stretch, and a tutor crossing from Worli to Colaba in the evening peak can lose forty minutes at the Peddar Road and Haji Ali signals. Matching inside the island beats importing from the suburbs, which is why an IB home tutor in Mumbai is almost always matched within a zone rather than across the city.

The Western Suburbs run north to south along the Western Line and the Western Express Highway, through Bandra West, Khar West, Juhu, Andheri West, Versova, Goregaon East, Malad West, Kandivali East and Borivali, and this is where HL Physics, HL Chemistry and Mathematics Analysis and Approaches teachers are easiest to find. Metro Line 1 from Versova through Andheri to Ghatkopar and Metro Lines 2A and 7 along the Dahisar to Gundavali stretch have made some of these matches workable that were not five years ago. Matching along the line works; matching across it does not, because the Bandra–Worli Sea Link and the Link Road both clog after six in the evening.

In the Central Suburbs, Powai and Chandivali are the anchor and the anomaly. Powai has no station of its own, so tutors arrive by road from Andheri East, Kanjurmarg or Ghatkopar East along JVLR, and a genuinely strong Powai tutor's weekday diary tends to be full by August. Kurla and Mulund West depend on the Central Line and the Santacruz–Chembur Link Road (SCLR). The Eastern Suburbs, from Chembur and Govandi through Vikhroli and Bhandup to Mulund, are better served than parents expect, partly because the Eastern Freeway and the Harbour Line make Wadala and Chembur reachable from the island quickly, and partly because many tutors who teach in BKC live out here.

Navi Mumbai is node-based. Vashi, Nerul, Seawoods, CBD Belapur, Kharghar and Panvel each hold their own tutors, and the honest position is that IGCSE and MYP coverage is solid while one specific HL subject sometimes has to be taught online rather than at your dining table. The Atal Setu and Palm Beach Road have shortened the geography considerably, but pulling a tutor across the creek for a weekday evening slot rarely survives a full term. Thane spreads along Pokhran Road, Ghodbunder Road and Majiwada out to Kasarvadavali, where the evening Ghodbunder crawl, not the tutor's willingness, decides whether a seven o'clock slot holds through November. Thane tutors cover Thane; Mulund tutors sometimes cross the boundary, and almost nobody comes up from the island.

  • South Mumbai: deepest DP pool, slowest eight kilometres in the city
  • Western Suburbs: match along the Western Line, never across the Sea Link
  • Powai and Chandivali: no station, so road access decides the timing
  • Navi Mumbai: solid IGCSE and MYP cover, thinner single-subject HL depth
  • Thane: Ghodbunder Road traffic, not willingness, sets the evening slot
  • Eastern Suburbs: the Eastern Freeway makes island-based tutors viable

The Mumbai School Calendar an Excellent Tutor Asks for in Week One

A tutor who has taught here asks for the school's assessment calendar before the first session, because the external IB and Cambridge dates are only half the picture. From August to October, MYP criterion tasks start landing and DP1 students are still working out what Higher Level costs them. October and November bring internal assessment proposals, the first IGCSE mock announcements and the Extended Essay supervisor meetings. January and February are the heaviest weeks of the year: DP2 internal assessment final deadlines, the TOK essay upload and IGCSE mocks arrive together, and predicted grades are set off that evidence. April and May are the exam session itself, and June and July are when subject and tier changes quietly close for the new year.

Families at Dhirubhai Ambani International School in BKC, Ecole Mondiale World School in Juhu, Oberoi International School off JVLR, Hiranandani Foundation School in Powai, Cathedral and John Connon School in Fort, B.D. Somani International School in Cuffe Parade and Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania School in Thane are working to different internal deadlines even when the board dates are identical. One school may want an internal assessment draft a full month before another. IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with any of the schools named on this page, nor with any examination board; we name them because their calendars are what a tutor actually has to plan around.

The practical test of calendar awareness is what a tutor does with a short runway. Told in late January that a DP2 Physics internal assessment draft is due in nine days, an excellent tutor does not start teaching uncertainty analysis from first principles. She reads the draft, identifies the two criteria carrying the most available marks, works on those, and tells you explicitly which parts of the draft will stay weak because there is no time. A tutor who promises to fix everything in nine days has not looked at the calendar, and a tutor who has not asked for the calendar at all is planning your child's term from a textbook contents page.

  • August to October: MYP criterion tasks begin, DP1 students settle into HL
  • October to November: internal assessment proposals and first mock announcements
  • January to February: IA deadlines, the TOK essay and IGCSE mocks collide
  • February to March: predicted grades are set from evidence already on file
  • June to July: subject and tier changes close for the new academic year

Home Tuition, Online or Hybrid: Which Setting Shows You the Teaching?

Home tuition shows you the most, which is why it leads here. A tutor at your dining table with the marked script between him and your child is working in a room you can walk through, and you can hear whether the student is talking or being talked at. You also see the small things that never appear on a profile: whether the tutor puts the paper in front of the child or keeps it on his own side, whether he waits through a silence or fills it. Parents who search for the best IB tutor in Mumbai and then book an online trial instead are judging the harder thing in the easier setting.

An IB online tutor in Mumbai is not a lesser option, and for a scarce HL subject or a Kharghar to Bandra commute it is the only arrangement that survives a full term. Screen-share annotation of a scanned script works well for Mathematics and the sciences, and a shared document is genuinely better than paper for Extended Essay supervision, because every revision is visible and the supervisor can see who wrote what. The trade-offs are real: a tutor cannot see what a student's hand is doing on a diagram, attention is harder to hold for a twelve-year-old, and a bandwidth failure costs a session that a home visit would have absorbed.

Hybrid is where most DP families end up, and for good reason. One home session a week carries the marking and the uncomfortable conversation; one online session carries the follow-up and the timed question practice. It also keeps the cost sane, which is the honest answer to the fee question. IB tuition fees in Mumbai depend on the board and level, how scarce the subject is, how far the tutor travels and how long the session runs, not on a published rate card. One home tutor for all IB and IGCSE subjects in Mumbai is cheaper and almost always weaker above MYP 4 than a specialist for each subject, and an IB private tutor in Mumbai teaching outside his own subject group is the most common quiet waste of money we see.

  • Home tuition makes the talking ratio audible from the next room
  • Online suits scarce HL subjects, long commutes and Extended Essay drafting
  • Online weakness: diagrams, practical work and younger students' attention
  • Hybrid keeps one marking session at home and one practice session online
  • Travel distance and session length move the rate more than reputation does

Verification on Our Side, and the Four Questions Only a Parent Can Answer

Before a tutor is shortlisted, IB Gram checks government photo identity and the qualification documents behind the claimed degree, records the boards, programmes, levels and papers that tutor has actually taught, and runs a subject interview that includes marking a real student script against the published descriptors and defending the band awarded. References are taken where a tutor has institutional history to reference. It is equally important to say what we do not check. We do not test charisma, we cannot independently verify a claimed history of student grades, and no document in a file tells us how a tutor behaves in your sitting room on a Wednesday evening when a child is tired and defensive.

That is the part only you can see, and four questions after the first session cover it. Did the tutor start from my child's own marked work rather than from a book or a slide deck? Was my child asked to attempt something before anything was explained? Did the tutor name a criterion, a command word or a marking point, instead of saying the answer needed more detail? And did the tutor say one thing I did not especially want to hear? Four yeses is the strongest signal available this early. Three yeses and a hesitation on the last one usually means the tutor is still being polite, and politeness fades by session four.

Nobody at IB Gram can tell you that you have found the best IB tutor in Mumbai, and we will not pretend otherwise. What a platform can do is remove the candidates who cannot mark, confirm that the person at your door is who the profile says, and give you a written record of what the tutor found so there is something to compare against in a month. The judgement that matters stays with the household that heard the hour. Ask your child a single question afterwards: what did you try today that you could not do last week? A blank answer after three sessions is information.

  • Checked: photo identity, qualification documents, boards, levels and papers taught
  • Checked: a live marking exercise against published descriptors, with the band defended
  • Not checked: charisma, claimed grade histories, or conduct in your sitting room
  • Your test: did the session start from your child's own marked work?
  • Your test: did the tutor say anything you did not want to hear?

What Does an Excellent IB Session Actually Look Like, Minute by Minute?

It opens with the student's own marked script, not a textbook. In the first five minutes an excellent tutor reads the teacher's comments, picks one question where marks were lost, hands the paper back and says: try it again, out loud, and tell me the exact point where you stop. Nothing has been explained yet, and that is deliberate. The attempt is the diagnostic. A student who stops at the second line of a mechanism has a content gap; a student who writes a correct paragraph that answers a different command word has a technique gap, and the two need completely different hours.

Only after the attempt does the explanation arrive, and it arrives named. Not you need more detail, but: this question says evaluate, so the examiner needs a judgement with a stated basis, and your answer gave six advantages and no judgement. Then the published descriptor goes on the table and the tutor marks the attempt against it in front of the student, says which band it sits in and which sentence of the descriptor it fails, and asks the student to mark the next one himself. That last step is the whole point. A tutor teaching self-marking is building a student who needs fewer hours next term, which is the opposite of what a tutor with an empty diary is tempted to build.

Three refusals also run through a good session. A tutor who does not know whether a word count includes footnotes says so and checks the subject guide before the next session rather than guessing, because a confident wrong answer about a submission rule can cost real marks. A tutor asked to help draft an internal assessment declines to write, restructure or supply the analysis, and explains what she will do instead: teach the criteria, read the draft, say which band it sits in, ask the questions that expose a weak method, and walk through a published exemplar. And a tutor declines to predict a grade she has no evidence for, because that number becomes the standard everything is measured against.

The last mark of excellence is timing, not content. Six weeks into DP2, a tutor who can see that an HL Chemistry 7 is further away than the weeks remaining says so in week six rather than in March, when the only remaining option is panic. That conversation is uncomfortable, usually brief, and worth more than any amount of encouragement, because it lets a family redirect hours towards the subjects where marks are still movable and set a realistic target for the one that is not. The comfortable version of that conversation, delivered late, is the single most expensive thing a pleasant tutor does.

  • Minutes one to five: read the marked script, pick one lost mark
  • The student attempts before anything is explained; the stopping point is the diagnosis
  • Feedback names the criterion, command word or marking point, never just more detail
  • The tutor marks against the descriptor, then hands the marking to the student
  • I do not know, I will check the subject guide, is a strength, not a gap
  • No part of an internal assessment is ever written, restructured or supplied

Progress in a Mumbai IB Household: Four Weeks, One Term, One Exam Session

The counterfeits of excellence are what make the search for the best IB tutor in Mumbai so hard, because each one is pleasant to sit through. Charisma is the big one: a warm, funny, articulate hour in which the tutor does all the talking feels like a good session and teaches almost nothing, and children report enjoying it, which closes the parent's inquiry early. A famous school on a CV is evidence of hiring, not of one-to-one diagnosis. A confident instant answer to a question about word counts or criterion wording usually means the document has not been opened recently. And a tutor who promises a 7 in the first week is quoting a sales figure, since no marking has happened yet.

Against those, the realistic picture of progress. At four weeks, roughly three or four sessions, nothing visible should have moved in the report, but the tutor's written read of the second script should differ from the first: either the same marks are being lost, which is worth a conversation, or newer and more advanced marks are, which is progress. At one term, expect the mark pattern to shift before the grade does, with marks appearing on application and evaluation questions rather than only on recall. At one full exam cycle, a grade movement is a reasonable expectation rather than a promise, and it depends on attendance, the work done between sessions and how far behind the starting point was.

The limits are worth stating plainly. IB Gram does not guarantee grades, and no tutor can, because a grade is produced by an examiner reading a script written on one morning by a tired teenager. A home tutor cannot fix a school-fit problem, cannot replace two years of missed foundations in a term, and cannot make a student care. What good teaching reliably changes is the quality of the attempt: a student who knows what the command word is asking, who can mark her own work against the descriptors, and who has stopped losing easy marks to the wrong kind of answer. That improvement is real, and it is the part a parent can actually verify.

  • Charisma: a warm hour where the tutor does all the talking teaches little
  • A well-known school on a CV proves hiring, not one-to-one diagnosis
  • Instant answers on word counts and criteria mean the guide was not opened
  • A promised 7 in week one precedes any marking and should be ignored
  • Four weeks changes the attempt; one exam cycle may change the grade

Before the First Home Tuition Session in Mumbai: What to Put on the Table

Three documents and one honest sentence are all the preparation home tuition needs. Put out the most recent marked script with the teacher's comments intact, the subject guide or syllabus code the school teaches from, and the assessment calendar for the term. Then tell the tutor the thing you would rather not: that the last tutor was dropped after a month, that your son has not opened the textbook since September, that the school has already flagged the internal assessment. A tutor who hears that in minute two plans a different first session from one who discovers it in week three, and the household that withholds it pays for the discovery with wasted hours.

The first session itself should feel slightly unsatisfying, and that is the correct sign. Your child attempts an old question, the tutor listens, asks where the stopping point was, marks one piece against the published descriptor and names the band, and leaves with a short written read of what is actually being lost. No chapter is covered. If you reach the end of session one and the tutor has taught a syllabus topic beautifully without ever looking at your child's own work, you have learned something important about the next three months and you should say so immediately rather than politely waiting.

If it is not working, say it early and in writing. Describe what you observed rather than how it felt: the tutor explains for fifty minutes of an hour, the same marks are still being lost after four sessions, there is no written feedback between sessions. A replacement is arranged on that evidence, and the written read from the first tutor goes to the next one so your child does not sit through a second diagnostic from zero. Changing a tutor in October costs a fortnight. Changing one in February costs a grade, which is why the awkward message is better sent now than saved for later.

  • Have ready: the marked script, the syllabus code, the term calendar
  • Say the uncomfortable thing in minute two, not in week three
  • Session one diagnoses and produces written feedback; no chapter is taught
  • Raise a mismatch with observations, not impressions, and raise it early
  • A replacement inherits the written read so no diagnostic is repeated
FAQs

Mumbai tutoring — questions parents ask

How can I tell in a single session whether the teaching is excellent?+

Listen for who is doing the work. In a strong session the student talks more than the tutor for the first fifteen minutes, because the tutor asked for an attempt before offering any explanation. Then listen for specifics: a criterion named, two command words distinguished, a marking point identified. If the hour consisted of a clean explanation of a chapter while your child nodded along, you watched a lecture rather than teaching. Afterwards ask your child one question: what did you try today that you could not do last week? A precise answer is the signal; a vague one is also information.

Does paying more buy better teaching, and what do IB tuition fees in Mumbai depend on?+

Not reliably. IB tuition fees in Mumbai depend on the board and the level, how scarce the subject is, how far the tutor travels and how long the session runs. A higher rate usually reflects HL Physics scarcity or a long commute, not teaching quality, and the strongest teacher on a shortlist is often not the most expensive one. We do not publish a price list, because an honest number depends on all four variables. Ask instead what the rate includes: marking between sessions, a written read of a draft, and whether the tutor is reachable when a school deadline moves.

My son's tutor answers every question instantly and confidently. Is that a good sign?+

It is neutral at best, and a mild warning if the questions were about marking. Subject fluency is easy to perform; knowing how a specific school marks a specific criterion is not. The tutor you want will sometimes stop and open the subject guide instead of answering from memory, particularly on word counts, criterion wording and which paper carries which component. Instant certainty about a published descriptor usually means the descriptor has not been read in a while. Ask one checkable question, such as which criteria the current task is assessed against, and see whether the answer cites a document or a memory.

Will a genuinely strong tutor travel to our building in Kharghar for a weekday evening slot?+

Usually yes, if the tutor already lives in Navi Mumbai. A Kharghar home tutor drawn from Vashi, Nerul or CBD Belapur holds a seven o'clock weekday slot comfortably through a full term. The same slot filled by a tutor commuting from Bandra over the Atal Setu or up the Sion–Panvel Highway starts slipping by the third week, and it is the student who pays for it in shortened sessions and cancelled Fridays. We would rather tell you that one scarce HL subject needs an online tutor than arrange a commute nobody can sustain for twelve weeks.

Can I judge the teaching if I am not in the room during a home tuition session?+

Yes, and in most cases you should not be in the room during home tuition. Sit within earshot next door for the first two or three sessions instead. What you are listening for is the ratio: if your child's voice comes up regularly, the session is working the way it should; if you hear a continuous adult monologue, it is not. Afterwards ask the tutor which criterion or command word was worked on, and ask your child what she attempted. Two specific answers tell you more than an hour spent watching from a chair in the corner, which changes how a teenager behaves anyway.

The tutor said she did not know and would check the subject guide. Should I be worried?+

No, that is one of the better things a tutor can say. Published subject guides change, word counts and criterion wording get revised, and a tutor who answers a procedural question from memory will eventually be confidently wrong about a deadline or a submission rule. What matters is what follows: the answer should arrive before the next session with the document referenced, not quietly dropped. Worry about the opposite behaviour, which is a tutor who has an instant answer to every question about marking and never once cites the guide your child's school is actually working from.

The tutor refuses to help draft my daughter's Internal Assessment. Is that unreasonable?+

No, and a tutor who agreed would be putting your daughter at real risk. An internal assessment is submitted as her own work, and schools run authenticity checks and supervisor conversations around it. A tutor can legitimately teach the criteria, read a draft and say which band it currently sits in, ask the questions that expose a weak method, and walk through a published exemplar to show where its marks came from. Writing a sentence of it, restructuring a paragraph for her or supplying the analysis crosses a line that costs a diploma rather than a grade, and no hour of tuition is worth that.

A tutor told us a 7 in HL Chemistry is unlikely this session. Should we look for someone more positive?+

No. Find out what the judgement rests on, then decide. A tutor who has marked your son's recent paper against the published descriptors and says the gap is larger than the weeks remaining has given you something usable: it lets you set a realistic target, protect the other five subjects, and stop pouring the scarcest resource in the Diploma Programme into the one that will not move. A tutor who promises a 7 in the first week has marked nothing. An uncomfortable truth in September is cheaper than a comfortable one in March.

Does teaching at a well-known Mumbai school make someone a better tutor?+

It is evidence of hiring, not of teaching one child. A school name tells you an institution selected that person and that they know an internal calendar well, which genuinely helps. It does not tell you whether they can diagnose one student's marked script, teach to a criterion, or work without thirty other students in the room to carry the lesson. Some of the strongest one-to-one teachers in Mumbai are examiners or former classroom teachers who were unremarkable in front of a class and excellent across a dining table. Judge the session you actually heard, not the letterhead.

Four weeks in and the marks have not moved. What should I look at instead of the marks?+

Look at the work rather than the report. Four weeks is three or four sessions, enough to change how a student approaches a question and nowhere near enough to move a term grade, particularly if no graded task has happened yet. Ask for the tutor's written read of the latest script and set it beside the first one. Are the same marks being lost, or newer and more advanced ones? Losing marks on evaluation instead of on recall is progress. The same error repeating unchanged after a month is a problem worth raising in writing this week.

What should I ask on the first phone call before booking anything?+

Four things. Which boards, programmes and levels have you taught, and which specific papers? Can you mark a page of my child's work and tell me which band it sits in and why? What will you refuse to do on an internal assessment? And what would make you tell me this match is not working? The last two separate a teacher from a salesperson quickly, because both require the tutor to describe a limit. Anyone who cannot name a single thing they would refuse to do is the wrong person for a Diploma Programme student.

Find your Mumbai tutor

Send the last marked script, the subject guide or syllabus code and the school's assessment calendar. You will get a written read of where the marks are actually being lost, then two or three tutor profiles stating the boards, levels and papers each has taught. The first session is diagnostic: your child attempts, the tutor listens and marks one piece against the descriptors, and you receive that in writing. If it is not teaching, say so and we match again.
