Best IB Home Tuition in Mumbai

Parents who search for the best IB home tuition in Mumbai are usually hoping for something easy. The arrangement that works is rarely the comfortable one. It asks you to take an odd slot, accept blunt feedback early, and let a home tutor tell your child something they would rather not hear this term.

Tutors are matched by subject and component, not by pincode alone
Profiles list boards taught, levels taught and checked identity documents
You hear the same session notes your child hears, in writing
A replacement is arranged without restarting your brief from scratch

How IB Gram turns a search for the best IB home tuition in Mumbai into a shortlist

A request usually arrives as one sentence: a Diploma Programme (DP) 1 student in Khar West is sinking in Mathematics Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level (HL), and the family wants someone at the flat on weekday evenings. That sentence is not yet a brief. Before any tutor is contacted it has to become three answers: which paper or component is actually failing, which evenings are genuinely free for a whole term rather than for a fortnight, and how far the family is willing to let the search travel. Families who answer the third question honestly get a shortlist worth reading.

The sequence is deliberately short, and it is worth knowing before you write in. 1. You send the board, the year, the subject and level, your pincode and two or three slots that are real. 2. We read that brief against tutor profiles and filter on component experience rather than on a broad subject label, so an Internal Assessment (IA) problem goes to someone who has marked IAs. 3. You get a shortlist, usually a small one, with the travel time and the free slot written next to each name. 4. You take a first session with one of them and decide afterwards, not before.

The shortlist is where the discomfort begins. The tutor who fits the brief closest is often the one with the least convenient availability, because a strong IB home tutor in Mumbai fills the weekday five-to-eight window first and keeps whatever is left: a seven-thirty Saturday morning, a nine o'clock Tuesday after a Bandra session, a Sunday before lunch. A parent who treats that slot as a dealbreaker ends up with the third name on the list instead of the first. That is a legitimate decision. It should be made knowingly rather than by default, which is what happens when the awkward option is never put in front of you.

Nobody here decides which trade-off your family should accept. The job is to put the trade-offs in writing: who is free when, who travels how far, who has taught the exact component you are worried about, and who has only taught the subject around it.

  • 1. Send board, year, subject, level, pincode and two genuinely free slots
  • 2. Profiles filtered on component experience, not broad subject labels
  • 3. Shortlist returned with travel time and free slot beside each name
  • 4. One first session, then you decide whether this arrangement continues
  • Awkward slots are shown as slots, not quietly dropped from the list

Primary Years, Middle Years, IGCSE and the Diploma: where the easy choice costs you later

The International Baccalaureate (IB) runs as the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the Diploma Programme (DP), and most international schools here bolt an IGCSE year or two between MYP and DP. Each stage has a comfortable option and a price for taking it. In PYP and early MYP there is no external exam, reporting is against criteria rather than percentages, and a child can coast for three years while looking fine on paper. The platform's briefs span all IB and IGCSE subjects across IB and IGCSE, Years 1-12 home tuition in Mumbai is requested for, and the Year 7 to Year 9 requests are almost always the ones a parent wishes they had sent two years earlier.

MYP 5 is where the slack runs out: the personal project and eAssessment are the first pieces of work a student cannot talk their way through. At IGCSE the first real fork appears. Cambridge International Education offers Core and Extended papers in several subjects, and Core entry limits the grades available while Extended carries the full range on harder papers. Core is the comfortable choice, and in a Year 10 conversation it often sounds like kindness. For a student who wants Chemistry at Higher Level in DP, it is a door quietly closing. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs a single tier in most subjects, which removes the decision and raises the floor.

The Diploma asks for six subjects, three of them at Higher Level, plus the Extended Essay (EE), Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and the service requirement. The uncomfortable conversation in DP is the fourth HL. A student carrying four Higher Levels because it looked impressive in April of MYP 5 is the single most common reason a family writes to us in February of DP1. Moving one subject from Higher Level to Standard Level (SL) in DP1 is a timetable adjustment; the same move in DP2 is a salvage operation, and some schools will not allow it at all.

A tutor who agrees with every choice already on your child's subject sheet is not reading the syllabus. The first useful thing an IB private tutor in Mumbai can do, in Year 9, Year 10 or DP1, is tell you which combination on that sheet is arithmetically unsurvivable with the hours your child actually has.

  • PYP and MYP report against criteria, so coasting looks fine for years
  • MYP 5 personal project and eAssessment are the first external pressure
  • Cambridge Core entry limits grades; Extended carries the full range
  • Edexcel International GCSE removes the tier decision in most subjects
  • A fourth Higher Level is the commonest February regret in DP1

Which subject decisions will a good tutor argue with you about?

Three of them. Whether your child should be sitting a given Higher Level subject at all; whether the Internal Assessment topic they have chosen can actually score against the published criteria; and whether the subject they are weakest in is weak because of content or because of exam technique. Those three arguments, had early, are the whole value of subject depth. Everything else is revision.

Take the IA argument first, because it costs families the most. A DP2 student in Chembur chose perfume chemistry for her Chemistry IA because she loves it. The topic is genuinely interesting and produces no measurable range worth plotting, which means the Analysis criterion has almost nothing to reward. Heard in week two, that is a redirect. Heard in week nine, with the data collected and the draft half written, it is a lost grade band. The same happens in Physics, where a topic with no clean independent variable cannot carry an uncertainty discussion, and in Business Management, where a research project built on a company that publishes nothing usable leaves the student writing opinion.

Subject depth also means knowing which paper is doing the damage. Mathematics Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level carries Paper 3, a long investigative paper that rewards a completely different habit from Papers 1 and 2, and a student can be competent at both and still lose the grade there. Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level does not have it, which is why the AA HL to AI SL question is a technique question and not a pride question. At IGCSE, Cambridge 0580 Extended Paper 4 pays method marks that students throw away by answering too fast, and 0625 Physics Paper 6 tests practical skills in writing, without a laboratory in sight, which no amount of classroom time fixes if nobody has taught the paper's conventions.

In languages and humanities the component split matters as much. English A Language and Literature splits the HL essay from the individual oral, and a student strong in written analysis can be unprepared for a global issue discussion. Economics asks for commentaries pinned to real articles, which means the skill being graded is selection, not writing. All IB and IGCSE subjects a home tutor in Mumbai covers break down this way once you ask the right question, which is never 'is she bad at Chemistry' but 'which component is she losing marks in'.

  • Mathematics Analysis and Approaches HL carries Paper 3; Applications SL does not
  • Cambridge 0625 Paper 6 tests practical skill in writing, not in a laboratory
  • An IA topic with no measurable range cannot score on Analysis
  • English HL essay and the individual oral are separate skills, taught separately
  • 0580 Extended Paper 4 pays method marks that fast answers throw away

Which Mumbai zone can actually give you the right tutor on the right evening?

Your zone decides your availability more than your budget does. Mumbai, Maharashtra splits into six practical tutoring zones, and each one has a different supply of IB specialists: South Mumbai, the Western Suburbs, the Central Suburbs, the Eastern Suburbs, Navi Mumbai and Thane. The right subject specialist is frequently one zone away rather than two streets away, and that is the first inconvenience most families are asked to accept. Geography is why the best IB home tuition in Mumbai so often sits one zone away from the family who needs it.

South Mumbai is short-distance and slow. A tutor crossing from Worli to Colaba or Cuffe Parade covers a few kilometres and can still lose forty minutes to the Peddar Road and Haji Ali signals at seven in the evening, so matches are made inside the island rather than pulled down from the suburbs. Walkeshwar, Tardeo and Fort families usually get a tutor who already teaches two other students within a ten-minute radius, and the Coastal Road plus Metro Line 3 from Cuffe Parade towards BKC have made the Churchgate to Grant Road stretch of the Western Line less decisive than it was. The Western Suburbs run north to south along the Western Line and the Western Express Highway: Bandra, Khar West, Santacruz and Juhu in the south, Andheri, Goregaon East and Oshiwara in the middle, Malad, Kandivali East, Borivali and Dahisar East above. Matching along that line works; matching across it, with the Bandra-Worli Sea Link or Link Road in the way at six in the evening, does not. Metro Line 1 from Versova through Andheri to Ghatkopar and Metro Lines 2A and 7 from Dahisar down to Gundavali have made a few cross-matches viable that were impossible before.

The Central Suburbs sit on the Central Line and the Eastern Express Highway, with Powai and Chandivali hanging off JVLR in between. Powai is the odd one out: physically central, with no station of its own, reached by road from Andheri East, Kanjurmarg or Ghatkopar, which is why a Powai family hears a different answer about a six o'clock slot than a Kurla or Mulund family does. The Santacruz-Chembur Link Road makes a Chembur to BKC run shorter than the map suggests. The Eastern Suburbs stretch from Chembur and Govandi through Vikhroli and Bhandup to Mulund on the Central and Harbour lines, and the Eastern Freeway puts Wadala and Chembur closer to South Mumbai than any resident expects.

Navi Mumbai is planned in nodes: Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar and Panvel, each a short drive from the next along Palm Beach Road and the Sion-Panvel Highway, with the Trans-Harbour Line, Navi Mumbai Metro Line 1 from Belapur to Pendhar and now the Atal Setu connecting them outward. Tutors are matched node to node; pulling one across the creek from the island city for a weekday evening lesson almost never survives a full term. Thane spreads from the station east along Pokhran Road, Majiwada and Ghodbunder Road, and Ghodbunder sets the schedule: a tutor living near Thane station reaches Kasarvadavali in twenty minutes off-peak and nearly an hour at eight. A family in Kharghar who waited six weeks for the one Chemistry Higher Level specialist genuinely covering the Navi Mumbai nodes had a better year than the family down the road who took whoever was free on Monday.

  • South Mumbai matches inside the island; Peddar Road signals set evening timing
  • Western Suburbs match along the Western Line, rarely across it
  • Powai has no station, so tutors arrive by road via JVLR
  • Navi Mumbai matches node to node along Palm Beach Road
  • Ghodbunder Road turns a twenty-minute Thane run into nearly an hour
  • The Eastern Freeway makes Chembur and Wadala closer to Colaba than expected

When does the Mumbai school calendar make a comfortable arrangement fall apart?

Late September and the whole of February. Those are the weeks when Internal Assessment drafts, mock exams, the Extended Essay deadline and the Theory of Knowledge essay land on top of each other, and a tutoring arrangement built around one convenient weekly slot has no slack left in it. A family that has been coasting on a pleasant Saturday session discovers in February that the pleasant Saturday session was never going to be enough.

The international school year here starts in high summer and front-loads its decisions. Between August and October, DP1 subject changes close at most schools and IA proposals are approved, which is why the HL to SL conversation has to happen before the Diwali break and not after it. November brings Year 10 and Year 11 mocks. January and February are the crush: DP2 mocks, the Extended Essay final submission, the TOK essay and several IA deadlines, plus the Edexcel January series for students sitting IGCSE papers early. April and May are exams and study leave, and study leave is revision time, not spare tutoring capacity. Families at Dhirubhai Ambani International School and the American School of Bombay in BKC, Ecole Mondiale World School and Jamnabai Narsee International School in Juhu, Oberoi International School off JVLR in Goregaon East, Cathedral and John Connon School in Fort, B.D. Somani International School at Cuffe Parade, Bombay International School at Babulnath and Aditya Birla World Academy in Tardeo all work to versions of this calendar, with their own internal deadlines placed a fortnight or three ahead of the official ones.

The suburbs and the satellite cities run the same pressure points on slightly different dates. Hiranandani Foundation School in Powai, NES International School in Mulund West, JBCN International School in Parel, Singapore International School in Dahisar East, Thakur International School in Kandivali East, Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania School in Thane and D.Y. Patil International School in Nerul each set internal draft dates that a tutor needs to know about in week one, not week six. IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with any school named on this page; these names are here because their calendars set the pressure, not because of any relationship.

The monsoon is the other calendar. June and July cost sessions to waterlogging near the Andheri Subway, Milan Subway, Hindmata and the low stretches of the Western Express Highway, and a tutor who insists on a makeup session online instead of writing off the week is being inconvenient and correct. The tutor who cheerfully cancels is easier to deal with in July and expensive in February.

  • August to October: DP1 subject changes close and IA proposals are approved
  • November: Year 10 and Year 11 mocks arrive before the winter break
  • January and February: DP2 mocks, TOK essay and Extended Essay collide
  • Monsoon weeks cost sessions near the Andheri Subway and Hindmata
  • Study leave is revision time, not extra tutoring capacity

Home tuition, online or hybrid across Mumbai: which inconvenience buys you something

Home tutoring is the lead service on this page and the default we recommend for a student who is behind, because of one mechanical advantage: the written work is on the table. A tutor sitting across from your child in Santacruz or Bhandup sees the blank page, the skipped working, the answer copied from the back of the book, and the point at which the pencil stops moving. The cost of that advantage is paid by you. Travel time has to be paid for in session length or in a later start, someone has to be in the flat, and a usable table away from the television has to exist. Families searching for the best IB home tuition in Mumbai sometimes want all the advantage and none of the cost, and that combination is not on offer anywhere.

Online is not the lesser option; it is a different trade. An IB online tutor in Mumbai, or outside it, widens the pool enormously, which matters when the subject is scarce: Higher Level Chemistry, Mathematics AA HL, Economics, Psychology, French B, Music. Online also makes the difficult slots possible, because a seven in the morning session before school is realistic on a laptop and absurd by car from Ghatkopar. For IA work it can be better than paper, since a shared spreadsheet with uncertainty columns and a screen-shared graph beats two people leaning over a notebook. What online cannot do reliably is force a reluctant fifteen-year-old to keep writing while someone watches.

Hybrid is where most families land after a term: the tutor comes to the flat once a fortnight for the long working session and runs the weekly shorter session online, with one shared document carrying the task list between them. All IB and IGCSE subjects home classes in Mumbai can be run this way, and it is the arrangement that survives the monsoon, the Ghodbunder Road evening and the February crush without anyone pretending otherwise.

The option worth naming plainly is the comfortable one. A group batch near the station, two evenings a week, where a teacher re-explains the chapter the school already explained, feels productive every single week. The student attends, takes notes, and goes home calm. It rarely fixes a component problem, because nobody in that room is reading your child's IA draft or watching her lose method marks on Paper 4. It feels better than home tuition for months and achieves less, which is exactly what makes it so easy to choose.

  • Home tuition makes written work visible; a screen hides a blank page
  • Online widens the pool when a Higher Level subject has few local specialists
  • Hybrid usually means fortnightly at home, weekly online, one shared task list
  • Travel time is paid for in session length or in a later start
  • A group batch feels productive weekly and rarely fixes a component
  • Early morning slots are realistic online and impractical by car

How are tutors checked, and what should you check yourself?

IB Gram checks identity documents, qualifications and the boards and levels a tutor claims to teach, and a profile that does not hold up does not stay on the platform. What no verification process can tell you is whether this particular adult will say something unwelcome to your child in week three. That part you check yourself, in the first session, and it is the check that matters most.

Ask narrow questions. Not 'do you teach Chemistry' but 'how many Chemistry IAs have you taken from proposal to final draft, and what did you tell the student whose topic was not going to work'. Not 'are you good with weak students' but 'what work will you set between sessions, and what happens the week it is not done'. The answer you want is uncomfortable: a tutor who says she will not run the next session if the practice paper has not been attempted has just made your Tuesday harder and your child's July more likely to go well. A tutor who says the work is optional and we will see how it goes has told you what the next six months look like.

There is one refusal you should actively want. The IB requires the Internal Assessment, the Extended Essay and the oral components to be the candidate's own work, and a tutor who offers to clean up the data set, rewrite the evaluation or draft the EE introduction is creating an academic honesty risk that lands on your child, not on the tutor. The right behaviour looks unhelpful from the outside: annotating a draft with questions instead of corrections, pointing at the criterion instead of supplying the sentence, and declining to touch the parts that must be the student's own. Parents occasionally read this as a tutor not doing enough. It is a tutor protecting a candidate.

Check the ordinary things too. Sit within earshot of the first session rather than in the room, and listen to tone rather than content. Ask for the session note afterwards and see whether it names a component and a next action or just says the session went well. A note that says 'reviewed Topic 4' is not a note. A note that says 'she can balance redox half-equations and cannot yet choose between them under time pressure, so three timed questions before Thursday' is.

  • Identity documents, qualifications and the boards and levels claimed are checked
  • Ask which component they have taught, not which subject they know
  • Ask what work is set between sessions and what happens when it is skipped
  • A tutor who offers to draft an IA is a candidate risk, not a shortcut
  • A session note should name a component and a next action

The best IB home tuition in Mumbai is usually the least comfortable option

The pattern repeats across every zone of this city: the arrangement that moves a grade is almost never the one that feels nicest in month one. A DP1 Economics student in Vikhroli had a tutor who, after three sessions, told her parents that her diagram work was reproduced from memory and would not survive the Part B questions. That stung, and the family nearly replaced him. Another family on the same floor took a tutor who sent a warm note in week twelve saying their son was making steady progress, three weeks before the mock said otherwise. Feedback that arrives in week three is cheap. The same information in week twelve is expensive and sometimes unusable.

The conversations nobody wants are the ones worth paying for. Being told in January of DP1 that your son should move Chemistry from Higher Level to Standard Level is not a tutor giving up; it is a tutor reading six subjects, an Extended Essay, a TOK essay and the hours that actually exist in a Mumbai school week against each other. Being told that the IA topic your daughter chose because she loves it will not score is the same kind of favour. Both sentences are easier to say in week two than in week nine, and the tutor willing to say them early is the one you will like least in the first month.

Then there are the refusals. A tutor who will not add four extra sessions in the fortnight before Paper 1 is usually right: compressing a Mathematics Analysis and Approaches syllabus into April moves sleep, not marks, and a tired candidate loses more in the hall than a slightly under-revised one. A tutor who sets real work between sessions and will not continue if it is not done has transferred effort onto your household on purpose. A tutor who tells you the nearest available specialist is in a different zone, and that you will either travel or wait, has given you a true answer instead of a convenient one. The six-week wait in Kharghar, the Sunday morning slot in Mulund, the drive from Dahisar East to a tutor's area in Borivali: each of these is a cost in something other than money, and each of them regularly buys a better year.

IB tuition fees in Mumbai move with board and level, how scarce the subject is, how far the tutor travels and how long each session runs, and nothing on this page will invent a figure for any of that. The more useful account is the other one. The real currency of a good arrangement is the slot you resent, the holiday week you keep, the criticism you receive in month one, and the willingness to be told that the plan your family already agreed on is wrong. The best IB home tuition in Mumbai, on any honest definition, is paid for in both currencies at once.

  • Blunt feedback in week three is cheaper than a kind report in week twelve
  • A Higher Level to Standard Level move in January is strategy, not defeat
  • Refusing extra April sessions is often the correct professional answer
  • Fees depend on level, subject scarcity, travel distance and session length
  • The slot you resent is frequently the one the right tutor actually has

What progress looks like at four weeks, one term and one exam cycle in Mumbai

At four weeks you should expect a change in method, not in grades. The notebook starts showing mark-scheme steps rather than final answers. Your child brings a question to the session instead of waiting to be told what to do. The IA has a variable that can be measured and a plan for collecting enough of it. If a tutor shows you a grade jump at four weeks, be suspicious of the test rather than impressed by the tutor, because four weeks is not long enough for a syllabus to move. The best IB home tuition in Mumbai looks unremarkable at four weeks and obvious at one exam cycle.

At one term the measure is component-level. A named paper should be attempted completely instead of abandoned halfway. The long-answer section that used to be skipped should be started. The internal grade may have moved by a band, or it may not have moved at all while the underlying work has, which is a normal and frustrating stage. At one exam cycle you finally have the only honest measure there is, and by then the arrangement has either held through February or it has not.

Here are the limits stated plainly. IB Gram does not guarantee grades, and no tutor who understands how these papers are marked would. A tutor is one input among school teaching, sleep, attendance, subject choice and the student's own effort, and on a bad combination of those a good tutor still loses. Some students do not improve on the timeline their parents expected. A session that always feels pleasant and never produces a disagreement is a warning sign rather than a result, and so is a report that is positive every single fortnight.

If an arrangement genuinely is not working, say so early rather than at the end of term. Tell us what has not changed in the notebook and in the session notes, and a replacement is arranged from the brief we already hold, with the new tutor given the component history so your child does not spend three sessions being re-diagnosed. Changing tutors twice in a term is a real cost to a student, so the first question is always whether the problem is the tutor, the slot, or work that is not being done between sessions.

  • Four weeks: method visible in the notebook, not a changed grade
  • One term: a named paper attempted completely instead of abandoned
  • One exam cycle: the only measure that settles the question
  • A session that always feels pleasant is a warning, not a result
  • IB Gram does not guarantee grades, and no honest tutor can

Starting IB home tuition in Mumbai without pretending it will be easy

Prepare four things before you write in and the first session is worth three. The latest report card or internal grade sheet, with the actual component comments rather than the summary. The full subject list with levels marked, because the combination matters more than the weakest subject. The current IA or coursework task sheet, exactly as the school issued it, including the internal deadline. And two slots that are genuinely free for a whole term, including the February weeks, not the two slots that happen to be free this month.

Tell us the practical constraints in the same message: your pincode, the society visitor and gate-pass rules, whether a tutor can be cleared for a standing weekly entry, and which room the sessions will actually happen in. A home tutor for all IB and IGCSE subjects in Mumbai spends real time on building access, and a society that issues single-visit passes only will shape the arrangement more than you expect. Searches like IB tutors near me in Mumbai produce a map; what produces a working arrangement is this list.

The first session is a diagnostic, not a lecture. Expect a past-paper question or an IA draft on the table within ten minutes, and expect the session to end with a short list of what is wrong and what happens before the next one. If it ends with reassurance and no list, you have learned something useful about that tutor. Ask for the session note in writing the same evening.

Which leaves the question every family eventually has to answer: how do you tell useful discomfort from a difficult person. Useful discomfort is specific, it is about the work, it arrives with a plan, and it changes what happens on Thursday. It names a criterion, a paper, a habit. A difficult person is vague, talks about your child's character rather than her method, offers no next action, and leaves a student unwilling to ask a question in case she looks stupid. Blunt about a redox equation is worth keeping. Blunt about a fifteen-year-old is not. If after a month the notebook has changed and your child still asks questions out loud, the discomfort is doing its job.

  • Bring the subject list with levels and the current IA task sheet
  • Send two slots genuinely free for a whole term, February included
  • Tell us the society gate and visitor-pass rules before the first visit
  • Expect the first session to end with a problem list, not reassurance
  • Judge criticism by whether it names the work or names the child
FAQs

Mumbai tutoring — questions parents ask

What does searching for the best IB home tuition in Mumbai actually get me?+

A named tutor, a written brief and a first session you judge for yourself, not a promise. You tell us the board, year, subject, level, pincode and your real availability; we filter tutor profiles on component experience rather than broad subject labels and send back a short list with travel time and free slots beside each name. Checked identity documents and qualifications sit behind each profile. What the search cannot get you is a tutor who is simultaneously the strongest specialist available, the nearest to your flat and free at the hour you prefer. One of those three almost always has to give, and deciding which one is the real work.

Why is the tutor who fits my child only free at seven-thirty on a Sunday morning?+

Because strong IB subject specialists fill the weekday evening window first, and the leftover slots are early mornings, late evenings and weekends. A Higher Level Chemistry or Mathematics AA HL tutor covering Thane or the Western Suburbs will have her five-to-eight weekday slots committed by August, and what she can still offer in October is a Saturday morning or a nine o'clock Tuesday after her last Bandra session. Families who take the awkward slot get the tutor they actually wanted. Families who insist on six in the evening get the third name on the shortlist. Both are valid choices, and the second one should be made with your eyes open.

Can a tutor travel to our building in Lower Parel on a weekday evening?+

Usually yes, with the slot chosen around the traffic rather than against it. Lower Parel and Parel are reachable from Dadar, Wadala and Chembur through the Eastern Freeway and from Worli and Prabhadevi within minutes off-peak, so a seven-thirty start is often easier to hold than a six o'clock one. Tell us the gate and visitor-pass procedure up front: a tower that issues only single-visit passes adds ten to fifteen minutes to every session, and a standing weekly entry authorisation removes that. If your building requires pre-registration for repeat visitors, arrange it before the first session rather than at the gate.

Does a parent need to be at home during home tuition, and what room works?+

Someone adult should be in the flat, and the room should have a table, a chair the student can sit upright in, and no television. A bedroom desk works. A dining table works better, because the written work stays visible and a parent passing through hears the tone of the session without sitting in it. Sitting inside the room changes how a teenager answers questions, so stay within earshot instead. For Internal Assessment work you also want a plug point and space for a laptop beside the notebook, since most IA sessions move between a spreadsheet and handwritten calculations several times an hour.

Our tutor says our son should drop Physics from HL to SL. Should we listen?+

Listen properly, then ask for the reasoning in writing before you decide. A tutor recommending a Higher Level to Standard Level move in DP1 is reading the whole load, six subjects plus the Extended Essay and TOK, against the hours your son has, and the recommendation usually comes from watching him trade Physics time against three other subjects every week. Ask which components he is losing marks in, what the SL route removes, and what the university requirement actually is for the courses he is considering. Then ask the school, because some will not permit the change after a certain date and the window matters more than the debate.

The tutor refuses to help with our daughter's Chemistry IA data. Is that normal?+

It is correct, and you should want it. The IB requires the Internal Assessment to be the candidate's own work, and a tutor who cleans up a data set, rewrites an evaluation or drafts an introduction creates an academic honesty problem that lands on your daughter, not on him. What a good tutor does instead looks less helpful: annotating the draft with questions, pointing at the Analysis and Evaluation criteria, explaining why an uncertainty discussion needs a measurable range, and sending her back to do it. If a tutor offers to write any part of it, treat that as a reason to end the arrangement rather than a bonus.

Can we add extra sessions in April, just before the exams?+

Sometimes, but a tutor who refuses is usually giving you the right answer. Four extra sessions squeezed into the fortnight before Paper 1 rarely add syllabus and reliably cost sleep, and a tired candidate loses more marks in the hall than a slightly under-revised one. What does work in April is narrow and timed: two or three sessions on a specific failure mode, such as method marks on 0580 Paper 4 or the structure of Part B answers, with past-paper work done alone in between. If a tutor says the schedule is already as useful as it can be, that is professional judgement rather than a lack of commitment.

What do IB tuition fees in Mumbai depend on?+

Board and level, how scarce the subject is, how far the tutor travels, and how long each session runs. A Higher Level Diploma subject with few specialists costs differently from a Year 8 MYP subject with many. A tutor crossing from Ghatkopar to Powai through JVLR traffic is paying for that time somewhere, usually in session length or a later start. Online removes the travel element entirely. We will not publish a price list here because any figure would be invented, and a quoted rate that ignores level, scarcity and distance is not a real quote. You will get actual numbers from the tutors on your shortlist.

There has been no progress after a month. What should we do?+

Separate three possible causes before changing anything. First, check what you are measuring: at four weeks you should be looking for method in the notebook and questions being asked, not a grade jump, because a syllabus does not move in four weeks. Second, check the between-session work, because a tutor can do nothing with a student who has not attempted a single practice question since the last visit. Third, read the session notes: if they say the session went well and never name a component, the problem may be the tutor. Tell us which of the three it looks like and we will act on that, not on the month.

Does online tuition really work for IB subjects, or is home tuition better?+

Both work, for different students and different problems. Home tuition wins when a student needs to be watched writing, because the blank page and the skipped working are visible on the table and invisible on a screen. Online wins when the subject is scarce, when the only workable slot is before school, or when the work is IA analysis in a shared spreadsheet, which is genuinely easier screen to screen. Most families in the Western Suburbs and Navi Mumbai end up hybrid: fortnightly at home for long working sessions, weekly online for the rest, one shared task list across both.

Our tutor is blunt to the point of rudeness. How do we tell the difference?+

Ask whether the criticism names the work or names the child. Useful bluntness is specific and task-directed: this redox method is memorised rather than understood, this IA topic cannot score on Analysis, these three questions before Thursday. It arrives with a plan and it changes what happens next week. Rudeness is vague, aimed at character, and offers no next action, and you can usually spot it by its effect: a student who has stopped asking questions in case she looks stupid. If the notebook is changing and your child still speaks up in the session, keep the tutor. If neither is true, change.

How does a replacement tutor happen if this one is not working out?+

You tell us early, and the replacement is matched from the brief we already hold. We ask what has not changed in the notebook and in the session notes, because the answer sometimes points at the slot or the between-session work rather than the tutor. If it is the tutor, the next one gets the component history, the current IA stage and the school's internal deadlines, so your child is not re-diagnosed over three sessions. Changing tutors twice in a term costs a student real momentum, which is why the diagnosis comes first. Mid-February is the worst moment to be starting again from nothing.

Send the board, year, subject and level, your pincode, the current coursework task sheet and two slots that are genuinely free for a whole term. You will get a short shortlist with travel times and free slots written beside each name, then one diagnostic first session that ends with a list of problems rather than reassurance. Decide after that session, not before it, and judge the tutor on whether the criticism names the work.
