How does IB Gram build a shortlist when a Mumbai family can fund only one subject?

Tell us the constraint before the wish list. A Mumbai family that can fund one subject gets a shortlist for one subject, chosen deliberately rather than guessed. IB Gram asks which paper, criterion or internal assessment is actually blocking the student, then puts forward a small number of tutors who have taught that exact component at that exact level.

The enquiries that arrive with the words affordable IB tutor in Mumbai in them almost always contain a list of three subjects and a sentence saying all of them are weak. Often they are not. One of them is weak and the other two are downstream of it. So the first call is diagnostic rather than a sales call. We ask what the subject teacher wrote on the last report, which single piece of assessed work is due next, whether the student can predict her own mark before she gets it back, and what the realistic weekday window is once school and travel are accounted for.

We then say out loud what we are not going to do. We are not going to propose a tutor for each of the three subjects, because a family funding a narrow number of hours spread across three subjects usually ends the term with three tutors who know the student slightly. We are not going to build a year-long schedule when what you described was a six-week problem. And if the honest answer is that the school's own subject clinic covers this and no paid tutor is needed yet, we will say so and you can come back later.

What you get at the end of this is not a package. It is a named tutor, the component they have taught, their base locality and the honest travel time to your building, and a first session with a defined job. If that job is done in two sessions rather than a whole term, a reasonable tutor says so. That is the difference between buying hours and buying a result you can see.

  • 1. Name the subject, the board, the level and the one piece of work that is stuck.
  • 2. State your constraint plainly: how many sessions, over which weeks.
  • 3. We shortlist tutors who have taught that component, with real travel times.
  • 4. You speak to them, then run one session on the stuck work itself.
  • 5. After that session you continue, pause or switch tutor, with no package to unwind.

Which single IB or IGCSE subject deserves the hours you can pay for?

Fund the subject where a small amount of help removes the largest block, not the subject with the lowest mark. A Standard Level Mathematics gap that is quietly damaging Physics, Chemistry and Economics repays paid hours faster than a History grade that is low only because the essay technique is unpractised and will respond to the department's own clinic.

That judgement needs the structure in front of you. The International Baccalaureate (IB) runs the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the Diploma Programme (DP), and each one hides its real workload somewhere different. PYP assessment is largely teacher-led and continuous, so paid hours there are usually about reading fluency or number sense rather than exam technique. MYP carries criterion-based assessment in every subject plus the Personal Project in the final year. The DP carries six subjects at Higher Level (HL) or Standard Level (SL), an Internal Assessment (IA) in almost every one of them, the Extended Essay (EE) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK).

Cambridge International Education and Pearson Edexcel IGCSE courses add a different decision. Mathematics, the sciences and some languages split into Core and Extended tiers, and the tier a student is entered for caps the grade available to her. A student sitting Core Mathematics cannot reach the top grades however well she performs, so a family deciding where to spend a narrow budget in Year 10 should ask the department whether an Extended entry is still realistic before funding anything else. That one conversation costs nothing and it changes which subject is worth the money.

Across all IB and IGCSE subjects a tutor in Mumbai is asked to cover, the pattern holds: the subjects that repay a short intervention are the ones with a single identifiable mechanism underneath them. Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry have mechanisms. Economics and Business Management have a small number of diagrams and definitions that carry much of the paper. English Literature, History and the languages reward sustained practice rather than a short block, which is exactly why the school's own marking and feedback is the better route there.

  • Ask which subject's weakness is also showing up inside two other subjects.
  • Ask whether the low mark is understanding or unpractised technique.
  • Check the IGCSE tier entry before funding any IGCSE subject at all.
  • Count the internal assessments still unsubmitted in each subject.
  • Pick the subject whose next deadline is closest and still fixable.

Where do a few paid hours actually move an IB or IGCSE subject?

Four moments repay paid hours more than any others: choosing an Internal Assessment question before a month is spent on an unworkable one, closing a mathematics gap that sits underneath three topics, drilling paper technique in the fortnight before mocks, and settling an Extended Essay research question. Most other problems are better fixed with school feedback and a stack of past papers.

The Internal Assessment question is the highest-leverage hour on the whole Diploma Programme. A Physics student who picks an investigation with one controllable variable and a measurable uncertainty can write a strong report in a fortnight. A student who picks a question needing equipment her school does not own, or whose data will never produce a gradient worth analysing, will spend six weeks and then rewrite from scratch. A tutor who has marked that subject's IA against the criteria for personal engagement, exploration, analysis, evaluation and communication can tell the difference in one session, before the time is spent. That is a single paid hour standing in front of a month of wasted ones.

The mathematics gap is the second. A DP student who cannot rearrange an equation confidently will look weak in Physics, in Chemistry calculations and in the quantitative parts of Economics, and the school will report three separate problems. Fix the algebra, the index laws and the logarithm rules and three subjects improve at once. The same is true at IGCSE, where a shaky grasp of ratio and proportion damages Chemistry moles, Physics density questions and Mathematics Paper 4 simultaneously. This is the strongest argument for funding Mathematics first even when Mathematics is not the lowest grade on the report.

Technique before mocks is the third. Mathematics Analysis and Approaches Paper 1 is sat without a calculator and punishes students who have only ever worked with one within reach. English Language and Literature Paper 1 is a guided analysis of an unseen text under time pressure, and most of the marks lost there go to structure rather than reading ability. A short block of timed practice with a marker who knows the band descriptors moves those papers. The fourth moment is the Extended Essay question: one that is too broad produces four thousand words of description, and no amount of later help rescues it. Across all IB and IGCSE subjects home classes in Mumbai are booked for, these four moments are where a narrow number of hours tends to change the outcome.

  • Settle the IA research question before any data is collected.
  • Test algebra and rearrangement before blaming Physics or Chemistry.
  • Book timed paper practice for the fortnight before mocks, not after.
  • Narrow the Extended Essay question until it fits four thousand words.
  • Use school marking for essay subjects and paid hours for mechanisms.

Mumbai home tuition across six zones when travel time decides the schedule

The search for an affordable IB tutor in Mumbai is partly a search about distance. A tutor who spends ninety minutes reaching you is not available for the short-notice session you will want in the week before a deadline, and travel distance is one of the things any tutor's rate depends on. So IB Gram matches within zones and along transport lines rather than across the city.

In South Mumbai the distances are short and the clock is not. A tutor crossing from Worli to Colaba or Cuffe Parade covers a few kilometres and can still lose forty minutes at the Peddar Road and Haji Ali signals, so tutors here are matched inside the island rather than brought down the Western Line from the suburbs. Walkeshwar, Tardeo, Babulnath and Fort families are generally served by tutors already living between Churchgate and Mumbai Central, with Metro Line 3 and the Coastal Road making a Cuffe Parade to Bandra Kurla Complex run possible on a weekday evening for the first time.

The Western Suburbs run north to south along the Western Express Highway, the Link Road and the Western Line, which means Khar West to Santacruz or Malad to Kandivali is an easy standing slot and Juhu to Dahisar is not. Bandra, Andheri, Goregaon East and Borivali each hold enough IB and IGCSE families to support local tutors, so an IB home tutor in Mumbai is almost always found within two or three stations of the student. Metro Line 1 across Versova to Ghatkopar and Metro Lines 2A and 7 along the highway have made some east-west matches workable that were not before.

The Central Suburbs sit on the Central Line and the Eastern Express Highway, with Powai and Chandivali hanging off JVLR in between. Powai is the exception worth knowing: it is physically central but has no station of its own, so tutors arrive by road from Andheri East, Kanjurmarg or Ghatkopar and the JVLR evening crawl sets the earliest honest start time. Kurla sits on the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road, which is the one reliable east-west crossing in this part of the city.

The Eastern Suburbs stretch from Chembur and Govandi through Vikhroli and Bhandup to Mulund, on the Central and Harbour lines and the Eastern Express Highway, and the Eastern Freeway makes Wadala and Chembur far closer to South Mumbai than the map suggests. Navi Mumbai is planned in nodes, so Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar and Panvel are matched node to node along Palm Beach Road and the Sion-Panvel Highway; the Atal Setu has shortened the crossing, but pulling a tutor over the creek for a weekday evening lesson still rarely holds for a full term. Thane spreads from the station across Pokhran Road, Majiwada and Ghodbunder Road, and Ghodbunder sets the schedule: Kasarvadavali is twenty minutes from the station off-peak and close to an hour in the evening peak. This is Mumbai, Maharashtra at its most literal, where the timetable rather than the tutor is usually what breaks.

One practical consequence for a family on a firm budget: the shorter the travel, the easier it is to buy a concentrated block. A tutor who lives in Chembur can run four sessions in the week before a Chemistry mock for a Chembur student. The same tutor cannot do that for a student in Borivali, and will put the travel into her rate. If you want intensity rather than a weekly habit, start by asking for a home tutor for all IB and IGCSE subjects in Mumbai who is already based in your own zone.

  • South Mumbai: Colaba, Cuffe Parade, Worli, Walkeshwar, Tardeo and Fort, matched within the island.
  • Western Suburbs: Bandra, Khar West, Santacruz, Juhu, Andheri, Goregaon East, Malad, Kandivali, Borivali, Dahisar.
  • Central Suburbs: Powai, Chandivali, Kurla, Ghatkopar and Andheri East, reached by JVLR and the SCLR.
  • Eastern Suburbs: Chembur, Govandi, Vikhroli, Bhandup, Mulund and Wadala, on the Eastern Freeway.
  • Navi Mumbai nodes Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar, Panvel; Thane from Majiwada to Kasarvadavali.

When does the Mumbai school calendar make a paid hour worth most?

The months that repay paid hours are September to November in the first Diploma year and January to March in the second. That is when Internal Assessment drafts cluster, when mocks land, and when the Extended Essay has to move from a vague interest to a researchable question. Hours bought in June, before the student holds any assessed work at all, mostly buy revision of last year.

Most Mumbai IB and IGCSE schools run an April to March or June to April year with the May examination session as the default, and their internal deadlines sit weeks ahead of the official ones so that teachers have marking time. Families at Dhirubhai Ambani International School in Bandra Kurla Complex, Cathedral and John Connon School in Fort, Ecole Mondiale World School in Juhu and Hiranandani Foundation School in Powai will all recognise the same squeeze: a Physics IA draft, a TOK essay outline and a Mathematics test in the same fortnight, usually just before a Diwali or Christmas break that was supposed to be a rest.

The November session changes the shape of the year. Students at schools entering candidates in November, and IGCSE candidates sitting the October to November series, hit their mock period mid-year instead. That is useful for a family working to a budget, because the quiet months are different from everyone else's and experienced tutors have real availability then. Oberoi International School in Goregaon East, NES International School in Mulund West, Smt. Sulochanadevi Singhania School in Thane and D.Y. Patil International School in Nerul in Navi Mumbai between them cover most of the calendar variations you will meet in this city.

Use this deliberately. If the school's own mock timetable falls in February, book your concentrated block for January and the first half of February and leave March alone; by March the student needs sleep and past papers more than a new voice. If the Extended Essay supervisor meeting is in August, spend one paid hour in July getting the question right and then let the supervisor do the job the school already employs her to do. IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with any of the schools named here. We name them only because their calendars are the clock your family is actually running on.

  • September to November in DP1: IA planning and the Extended Essay question.
  • January to February in DP2: mocks, paper technique and IA final drafts.
  • Plan around your school's internal deadline, not the official IB deadline.
  • November session families get mid-year mocks and quieter tutor availability.
  • Leave the fortnight before real exams for past papers, not new material.

Home tuition, online or a short hybrid block in Mumbai?

Home tuition is the default for a reason: a tutor sitting at your dining table sees the notebook, the unmarked past paper and the phone, and a Mumbai student in Years 1 to 12 who will not switch on a camera will still sit down at a table. Online makes sense when the job is narrow and specific. Hybrid is usually the most efficient use of a small number of hours.

Families who want an affordable IB tutor in Mumbai often assume home tuition is the expensive option because travel sits inside it. Sometimes it is. But home tuition also removes the thing that wastes the most paid time: the first ten minutes of an online session spent finding the file, scanning the question and discovering the student has not attempted the work. A home tuition slot with the folder already open and a parent within earshot tends to use the whole session. When you are funding few sessions, waste matters more than rate.

Online is right when the subject is scarce and the tutor is not local. If you need someone who has marked Higher Level Economics IAs, or who teaches Mathematics Applications and Interpretation at Higher Level, the right person may be in Pune or Chennai, and an IB online tutor in Mumbai is quite often a tutor who is not in Mumbai at all. Online also lets you buy one short conversation about an IA question, which nobody will travel to Kharghar to deliver. Screen-shared past papers work well; a shared whiteboard for long mathematics working is slower than paper.

Hybrid is what most budget-conscious families should actually ask for. One home session to set the plan and see the work, then short online check-ins to hold the student to it, then one more home session before the deadline. The travel appears twice instead of weekly, and a check-in can be shorter than a full session. An IB private tutor in Mumbai working this way will usually also agree to a shared slot: two students from the same society or the same class, same subject, same level, one session. Pairing works when both students are genuinely at the same point and fails badly when one is a grade ahead, because the tutor drifts towards the weaker one while both families pay. Ask the tutor to tell you honestly whether the pair fits.

  • Home tuition: best when the student will not start work unsupervised.
  • Online: best for scarce subjects and single short conversations about an IA.
  • Hybrid: one home session, short online check-ins, one home session before the deadline.
  • Shared slot: only when both students are genuinely at the same point.
  • Ask for travel time, not only availability, before agreeing a standing slot.

What to check yourself before you fund a single session

IB Gram checks identity, qualifications, teaching history and whether a tutor has genuinely taught the component you need. You should check one more thing yourself, and it is the one that decides whether a low rate is a saving at all: ask the tutor which assessment model they teach to, and listen for whether they describe the current one.

A tutor who does not know the current assessment model is not a saving at any rate. The Diploma Programme has changed in ways that matter. Theory of Knowledge is assessed through an exhibition and an essay rather than the old presentation. Mathematics is now Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation rather than Studies, Standard Level and Higher Level. Several sciences have revised internal assessment criteria, and subject guides are revised on a rolling cycle. A tutor still drilling a retired format will produce confident work that is marked against criteria it was never written for. The student loses the marks and you lose the hours, which is a worse outcome than not having hired anyone.

Four questions separate a current tutor from a merely cheap one. First: which syllabus version are you teaching, and when does it next change? Second: can you mark this answer of my daughter's against the published criteria and tell me the band and why? Third: what do examiner reports say students lose marks on in this paper? Fourth: what will the first session produce that I can actually see? A tutor who has taught the subject recently answers all four without hesitating. One who has not will talk about experience and confidence instead. Hunting for an affordable IB tutor in Mumbai should never mean skipping those questions, because asking them costs nothing.

Check your own side too. Ask for identity verification and then look at it. Ask whether the tutor has taught your child's board rather than only the subject, because IGCSE Extended Mathematics and Diploma Programme Mathematics are different animals. If you found someone by searching IB tutors near me in Mumbai and the only evidence is a listing, ask for one reference from a family whose child sat the same paper. And set the review point before the first session rather than after the fourth: say out loud that you will both reassess after session two.

  • Ask which syllabus version the tutor teaches and when it last changed.
  • Ask the tutor to mark one answer against the published criteria, aloud.
  • Confirm they have taught your child's board, not only the subject.
  • Agree the review point before the first session, not after the fourth.
  • Treat an unverifiable listing as a reason to ask for a reference.

What parents mean by an affordable IB tutor in Mumbai

When a parent types affordable IB tutor in Mumbai into Google, the real question is almost never which tutor charges least. It is: how do I get more out of fewer hours than the family next door is buying? The answer has three parts. Spend the hours at the right moment, use the help you have already paid for, and buy the one skill that reduces future sessions.

Start with the second part, because most families never use it. Your school fee already includes a subject teacher with a consultation slot, and most departments run a clinic or subject surgery that is attended by almost nobody. The Extended Essay supervisor is contracted to give your child supervision meetings and a reflection conversation, and a student who arrives with a written draft question gets far more from them than one who arrives with nothing. The school librarian can usually obtain journal access that would otherwise sit behind a paywall. Past papers, mark schemes, examiner reports, the published subject guides and the assessment criteria for every subject are available through the school's coordinator. A student who has read the criteria for her own IA has done something most students never do, and it costs nothing.

Now the first part. A weekly session all year is the default because it is easy to arrange, and it is often the least efficient thing a budget-constrained family can buy. Spread thin, it becomes homework supervision: the tutor arrives, asks what was set, and the hour goes on this week's worksheet. The same hours concentrated into the fortnight when the IA question is being chosen, or the three weeks before mocks, do something a weekly drip cannot. They change a decision or build a technique while there is still time to use it. Most families asking about IB home tuition in Mumbai should be asking about when, not how often.

The third part is the only investment that genuinely reduces future sessions. Ask the tutor explicitly to teach your child to self-mark. That means sitting with the published band descriptors or criteria, marking her own work before she hears the tutor's verdict, and defending the band she gave herself. A student who can predict her own mark within a band has stopped needing somebody to tell her whether the work is good, and that is the point at which tuition becomes optional rather than ongoing. It is uncomfortable for the first few sessions, which is why most tutors do not offer it unless you ask.

On money, the honest version: IB tuition fees in Mumbai depend on the board, the level, how scarce the subject is, how far the tutor travels and how long the session runs, which is why nobody can quote you anything sensible without those facts. IB Gram does not claim to be the cheapest option in this city, and we will not tell you we are better value than someone you have not met. What we will do is tell you when the hours you are considering are unlikely to be worth buying, and what to use instead.

  • Use the subject teacher's consultation slot before you buy any tuition.
  • Attend the department clinic; most of them run half empty.
  • Bring a written draft question to the Extended Essay supervisor meeting.
  • Get past papers, mark schemes and subject guides from the coordinator.
  • Ask the tutor to teach self-marking against the published criteria.
  • Concentrate hours around a decision or a deadline, not across a year.

What four weeks, one term and one exam cycle should show in Mumbai

At four weeks you should see a change in what the student can do unprompted, not a change in grade. At one term you should see marks moving on the kind of assessment you funded help for. At one exam cycle you should see a predicted grade the school is willing to defend. IB Gram does not guarantee grades, and nobody honest will.

Be specific about four weeks, because this is where families working to a budget either stop wasting money or keep going out of politeness. After roughly four sessions a student should be able to tell you what the criteria for her next assessed piece are, in her own words. She should be attempting past paper questions without being told to open the book. She should be able to say which band her last answer sat in and why. If none of that has happened, the hours are buying company rather than teaching, and the right move is a direct conversation with the tutor, not another month.

At a term, look at the assessment you targeted. If you funded help with a Chemistry IA, the draft should have come back with better criterion marks and the student should be able to explain the evaluation she wrote. If you funded Mathematics because it was undermining Physics, the Physics calculation marks should have moved too, and that is the real test of whether you picked the right subject to fund. If a tutor is not working out, say so and ask IB Gram for a replacement. We do not require a reason beyond fit, there is no notice period to work through, and the replacement is matched with the same shortlist discipline as the first.

The limits are worth saying plainly. A narrow number of hours cannot repair two years of missed foundations in the term before examinations, and a tutor who tells you otherwise is selling. A student who does nothing between sessions will not improve however good the tutor is, and that is the most common reason tuition fails here, not tutor quality. Spending less on tuition says nothing whatever about how much a family cares; some of the most carefully run Diploma Programme years we see are managed on very few paid hours and a great deal of attention to timing.

  • Four weeks: the student can state the criteria for her next assessed piece.
  • Four weeks: past paper attempts happen without being asked.
  • One term: marks move on the assessment you actually funded.
  • One exam cycle: a predicted grade the school is willing to defend.
  • Any point: ask for a replacement tutor, with no reason needed beyond fit.

Telling a tutor your constraint plainly before the first home tuition session in Mumbai

Say it in one sentence. We can fund a limited number of sessions, we want them spent on the Physics IA before the February draft deadline, and we need to know after the second session whether this is working. A reasonable tutor hears that as useful information rather than as a haggle, and plans backwards from your deadline instead of proposing a term.

Here is what a reasonable tutor does with that information. She asks for the assignment brief and the criteria before the first session so that no paid time goes on reading them. She proposes a sequence with an end rather than a standing slot. She tells you which parts of the job the school can do for nothing and declines to be paid for those. She suggests a longer first session and shorter follow-ups, because diagnosis needs time and checking does not. And she tells you if the honest answer is that the student needs two sessions and a week of past papers rather than eight weeks of her company.

Prepare four things before the first home tuition session anywhere in Mumbai: the last report or progress sheet, the brief and criteria for whatever is due next, one piece of marked work with the teacher's comments still on it, and a quiet table with a plug point. Tell the tutor which gate your society uses and who to ask for, and give your building desk the tutor's name before the slot so the first ten minutes are not spent at the barrier. If the student has a school clinic she is not attending, mention that too, because a good tutor will send her there.

The first session itself should produce something you can look at. Usually that is a short written diagnosis: what the student can do, what she cannot, which of her next three deadlines is at risk, and what the plan for the funded sessions is. If you reach the end of the first session with nothing written down, ask for it. A family funding few hours is entitled to know exactly what each one bought, and a tutor who cannot say is not the right tutor whatever the rate.

  • State how many sessions you can fund and which deadline they serve.
  • Ask for a sequence with an end rather than a standing weekly slot.
  • Send the assignment brief and criteria before the first session, not during.
  • Clear the tutor's name with your society gate desk the day before.
  • Expect a written diagnosis at the end of the first session.
FAQs

Mumbai tutoring — questions parents ask

We can only fund one subject. Which one should it be?+

Fund the subject where a small amount of help unblocks the most, which is usually not the subject with the lowest mark. Look for the weakness that is showing up inside other subjects: a Mathematics gap costing marks in Physics calculations, Chemistry moles and Economics diagrams is one purchase that improves three grades. A low History mark caused by unpractised essay structure will often respond to the department's own feedback and a pile of past papers. Ask each subject teacher one question: is this understanding or is this practice? Fund the understanding problems and let the school handle the practice ones.

Is a weekly session all year better than a short block at the right moment?+

Usually the block is better. A weekly session spread across a year tends to drift into homework supervision, where the hour goes on whatever worksheet was set that week and nothing structural changes. The same hours concentrated into the fortnight when an Internal Assessment question is chosen, or the three weeks before mocks, land while the student can still act on them. The exception is a student who genuinely will not work without a standing appointment. For her, the weekly slot buys discipline rather than teaching, which is a legitimate thing to buy as long as you know that is what you are paying for.

What help are we already paying for that we are probably not using?+

More than most families realise. Your school fee includes the subject teacher's consultation slot, a departmental clinic that usually runs half empty, the Extended Essay supervisor's contracted supervision meetings, and a librarian who can often obtain journal access that is otherwise behind a paywall. The school's Diploma Programme coordinator can supply past papers, mark schemes, examiner reports, the published subject guides and the assessment criteria for every subject your child takes. None of that costs anything extra. A student who reads the criteria for her own assessment before writing it has done the highest-value thing available, and no tutor is needed for it.

Can a tutor teach my child to mark her own work so that we need fewer sessions later?+

Yes, and you should ask for it explicitly, because most tutors will not offer. Self-marking means the student grades her own answer against the published band descriptors before the tutor says anything, then defends the band she chose. It is uncomfortable for the first few sessions and then it changes everything: a student who can predict her own mark within a band no longer needs somebody to tell her whether the work is good. That is the one skill that genuinely reduces future tuition, so if you are funding a narrow number of sessions, make it the stated goal of the last two.

Is the cheapest tutor we can find a saving?+

Not if the tutor does not know the current assessment model. The Diploma Programme has moved: Theory of Knowledge is assessed through an exhibition and an essay rather than the old presentation, Mathematics is now Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, and subject guides are revised on a rolling cycle. A tutor still teaching a retired format produces confident work that is marked against criteria it was never written for, and the student loses marks she would otherwise have had. Ask any tutor which syllabus version they teach and when it last changed. If the answer is vague, the rate is beside the point.

Can two families share a tutor and split one session?+

Yes, and it works well when both students are genuinely at the same point. Same subject, same board, same level, same assessment coming up, and ideally the same class, so that the tutor is not teaching two syllabi in one hour. It fails when one student is a grade ahead: the tutor drifts to the weaker one, the stronger one is bored, and both families pay for an hour that served one child. Two students in the same Powai or Kharghar society with the same Physics IA deadline is close to the ideal case. Ask the tutor to say honestly whether the pair fits before you commit.

Our society in Powai asks for a gate pass for every visitor. How does a weekly home tuition slot work?+

Register the tutor once as a recurring visitor rather than clearing her at the gate every week. Most Mumbai societies, including the larger Powai and Hiranandani Gardens complexes, will add a tutor to a standing-visitor or service-provider list once a resident submits the name, a photo identity reference and the slot timing to the managing committee or the facility app. Do this before the first session, not during it, or the opening ten minutes of a paid hour go at the barrier. Tell the tutor which gate to use and who to ask for; in large layouts the wrong gate means a long walk between towers.

Does a parent need to be at home during a home tuition session?+

Someone responsible should be in the flat, but they should not be in the room. Younger MYP and IGCSE students work better with a parent within earshot and out of sight. A parent sitting in corrects, prompts and answers for the child, which hides exactly the weakness you are paying to find. For a Diploma Programme student, a closed door and a check-in at the end is better. What a parent should do is read the written diagnosis after the first session and ask the tutor one question at the end of each visit: what could she not do today?

We live off Ghodbunder Road in Thane and the evening traffic is unpredictable. Which slot actually holds?+

Match a tutor who already lives on your side of Ghodbunder Road, and take an earlier slot than feels natural. A tutor coming from near Thane station reaches Kasarvadavali in about twenty minutes off-peak and close to an hour in the evening peak, so an evening slot that depends on that run will slip most weeks and then quietly stop. A tutor based in Majiwada, Pokhran Road or Hiranandani Estate holds the same slot all term. If no local tutor teaches the subject, take a Saturday morning home session with online check-ins midweek rather than fighting the Ghodbunder stretch.

What happens if the tutor is not working out after two sessions?+

Tell us and we match a replacement from the same shortlist; you do not need a reason beyond fit. There is no notice period and no obligation to complete a block. Say what specifically is not working, because it changes who we send. A tutor who explains well but cannot hold a distracted student is a different problem from one who is current on the syllabus but arrives unprepared. If the real issue is that your child has not done the work between sessions, a new tutor will not fix it, and we will say so rather than send you another one.

Is online tuition enough if we are only funding a few sessions?+

For a narrow, well-defined job, yes. One conversation to settle an Internal Assessment question, a walkthrough of a single marked past paper, or a check-in on Extended Essay progress all work online and cost no travel time. For diagnosis, home tuition is better, because the tutor sees the notebook, the unmarked worksheets and how the student actually sits down to work. The pattern that suits a tight budget is hybrid: one home session in Mumbai to diagnose and plan, short online check-ins to hold the plan in place, and one home session shortly before the deadline.

When in the Mumbai school year should we spend the hours we have?+

September to November in the first Diploma year and January to February in the second, for May session candidates. That is when Internal Assessment questions are chosen, the Extended Essay question has to be settled and mocks arrive, which are the moments paid help changes an outcome. Avoid the fortnight immediately before real examinations: the student needs past papers and sleep rather than a new voice. November session families, and IGCSE candidates sitting the October to November series, should shift the whole pattern by roughly half a year, and will often find good tutors far more available.

Send us the subject, the board, the level and the one deadline that worries you, plus how many sessions you can realistically fund. You will get a short list of tutors who have taught that exact component, with their base locality and honest travel time to your address.
