IB & IGCSE in Mathabhanga

A Cooch Behar subdivision town, far from where Bengal's international schools are

Mathabhanga is a subdivision town in Cooch Behar district, on the Mansai river, in the plains of North Bengal near the Bangladesh border. Paddy, jute and tobacco fields surround it, the Rajbanshi and Bengali traditions of the old Koch kingdom colour daily life, and Bhawaiya songs still carry across the countryside. Schools in the town follow the West Bengal boards or CBSE. We found no school here, or elsewhere in the district, that we could confirm offers the IB or Cambridge IGCSE.

Enquiries about these courses do still come. A family whose son or daughter studied in Kolkata or Bengaluru and returned. A parent in the railways, the forest service or the bank who expects a transfer abroad. A household with relatives in Canada or Australia that wants a recognised qualification. IB and IGCSE tutors in Mathabhanga, teaching online, give those students expert help without a move to Siliguri, Guwahati or Kolkata.

Most parents here type the words home tuition into a search box, so let us be exact. IB Gram tutors do not come to houses in Mathabhanga. In-home teaching is limited to Gurugram and parts of Delhi NCR. What your child receives instead is private tuition from home: a live lesson over video, at a fixed time each week, with a tutor based in India.

We are a small independent service. There is no tie to the IB, Cambridge, Pearson or any school mentioned below. Tutors teach and give feedback, but every Internal Assessment, Extended Essay, TOK essay and piece of coursework is written by the student alone.

At a glance

  • No IB or IGCSE school confirmed in Cooch Behar district
  • Siliguri, Guwahati and Kolkata are the closest cities with international schools
  • Private lessons online, taught from home; no tutor visits to Mathabhanga

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to Mathabhanga school years

In a subdivision where nearly every school year is organised around Madhyamik and Higher Secondary, the IB's terms can feel remote. This is what each programme involves and how we make it practical for Mathabhanga homes.

PYPClass 1-5, ages 6-11

IB Primary Years Programme

Units built around central ideas and questions, closing with a student-led Exhibition.

For a child back from an international school in Kolkata or abroad, tutors keep the inquiry habit going while bridging to Bengali-medium neighbours.

MYPClass 6-10, ages 11-16

IB Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups graded against criteria, with a Personal Project in the last year.

Criteria-based marking is the unfamiliar part; tutors show a Mathabhanga student how each descriptor turns into a mark.

DPClass 11-12, ages 16-19

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects, an Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS, assessed by exams and coursework.

Maths, the sciences, Economics and English are the usual requests from North Bengal; humanities students ask about Geography and History too.

CPClass 11-12, ages 16-19

IB Career-related Programme

A smaller set of Diploma courses with career-related study and a reflective project.

An uncommon request in this district; its academic courses are still teachable online.

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Mathabhanga

01

Why are IB and IGCSE schools so far from Mathabhanga?

  • No confirmed IB or IGCSE school in Cooch Behar district
  • Kolkata is the main hub, with Guwahati and Siliguri as nearer options
  • Demand is small and mostly from returning or relocating families
  • Online tutoring suits boarders, private candidates and board-school students alike

International schools go where international families are: corporate hubs, diplomatic and expatriate enclaves, and cities with a returning-NRI population. In West Bengal that means Kolkata and, thinly, Siliguri. North Bengal's plains districts, with an economy of farming, small trade and government service, have not generated the demand to support an IB school.

Mathabhanga is typical. The subdivision has respected schools with long traditions, many attached to the state boards and a few to CBSE. Teachers here are often outstanding at what they teach, and generations of local students have gone to Calcutta University, Jadavpur, Presidency or the engineering and medical colleges through the state system.

The result is that a family interested in the IB or IGCSE finds nothing at the end of the road. The usual workaround is to board a child in Kolkata, Darjeeling or Dehradun, which is costly and emotionally hard. The alternative is to combine whichever school the child attends with IB and IGCSE tutors in Mathabhanga, working online.

That does not equal a school. Tutoring covers content, practice and technique, not laboratories, group projects or a school's pastoral life. A family seeking the whole Diploma experience should enrol in a registered school.

We think it better to say so at the start than to over-promise.

02

Madhyamik, Higher Secondary, CBSE, IGCSE or IB: what shifts for a Mathabhanga student?

In West Bengal, Class 10 means Madhyamik, run by the state board, and Classes 11 and 12 lead to the Higher Secondary examination of the state council. Bengali is the usual medium, English a language subject, and marks come from thorough, accurate answers to textbook-based questions.

CBSE schools use NCERT and ask more application-style questions. ISC schools, mostly in larger cities, demand more writing and wider reading.

IGCSE and IB change the style in a more fundamental way. Papers are in English, command words such as discuss, justify and evaluate define the answer, and the mark scheme credits reasoning as well as correct results. IB adds an internal assessment in most subjects and the Extended Essay. A Mathabhanga student with excellent state-board marks may find the first IB paper a shock for this reason alone.

Tutors prepare students for that shift, working through real past questions from the correct syllabus. The table compares the routes.

03

What do IB and IGCSE tutors cost for a student in Mathabhanga?

  • Programme and level taught
  • Subject specialism required
  • Tutor's record on the exact syllabus
  • Weekly hours and plan length

No price list appears on this page because the sum varies with the student. After the free trial lesson we send the rate in writing, and you can decline without explanation.

Four factors move it. The level matters, with Diploma Higher Level usually priced above IGCSE. The subject matters, because Maths and the sciences need specialists. The tutor's experience with the syllabus counts, and so do weekly hours and the length of the plan.

Set against the other ways to get the same help, online tutoring is modest. It spares a Mathabhanga family the rent for a child in Siliguri or Kolkata, the overnight train fares and the loss of family routine.

Ask for details in writing: session length, what the written note includes, how a missed class is handled and how a tutor can be replaced. Those terms matter as much as the number.

04

Online home tuition, a Siliguri coaching class, a local teacher or self-study?

North Bengal families have four routes when they want to support an IB or IGCSE student, and each suits a different child.

Coaching in Siliguri or Cooch Behar town teaches a batch, mostly for state boards, JEE and NEET. A local teacher is convenient and affectionate but may not know the IB mark scheme. Self-study with past papers is workable for a disciplined learner, but weaknesses stay hidden without a marker.

Online one-to-one tuition puts a tutor who has taught the course in front of the student, and marks work against the actual scheme. Its limit is the connection, so we plan around load-shedding and weak signal.

The table sets the choices side by side.

05

How do Durga Puja, the floods and exam series shape the year in Mathabhanga?

In West Bengal the calendar bends around Durga Puja. Classes slow in the weeks before, and the festival week itself, along with Lakshmi Puja and Kali Puja, takes evenings. For IB and IGCSE students, the November exam series arrives soon afterwards, so revision cannot wait for the festival to finish.

Monsoon months bring heavy rain and swollen rivers across Cooch Behar. Power cuts and flooded roads are a normal risk, and we leave slack in the monsoon timetable, with a recording of each board session sent afterwards.

Winter fog can disrupt travel but rarely online lessons, which makes January and February a good time for internal assessment drafts and mock papers. Saraswati Puja in February is a light day.

A rough annual plan appears below.

A Mathabhanga study year against exam series
PeriodLocal conditionsStudy focus
June to SeptemberMonsoon, river rise, school termNew content with slack for outages
October to NovemberDurga and Kali Puja, November examsRevision for November candidates, short festival breaks
December to FebruaryCool, dry, Saraswati PujaMocks, internal assessment drafts

06

Where can an IB or IGCSE student from Mathabhanga go for university?

  • AIU equivalence for the IB Diploma and Cambridge qualifications
  • CUET-UG for central and many other universities
  • JEE and NEET depend on subject combinations
  • Direct entry abroad on IB points or A Level grades

The Association of Indian Universities treats the IB Diploma as equal to Class 12 and the IGCSE as equal to Class 10. A Mathabhanga student completing the Diploma can apply through CUET-UG to central universities and many state and private ones, and to colleges that set their own tests.

Many local families still think first of Calcutta University, Presidency, Jadavpur or North Bengal University. Admission rules for each differ, and some state institutions have their own treatment of non-state-board qualifications, so we advise confirming eligibility early.

JEE Main requires Physics, Chemistry and Maths in the qualifying exam, and NEET requires Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology and English. Subject choices at Class 11 must reflect that if either route is on the cards.

Abroad, Diploma points and Cambridge A Level grades are read directly by universities in the UK, Canada, Australia and the US, and many students from Bengal go on to study in those countries. Tutors help match Higher Level subjects to target courses.

07

IB Maths AA or AI, and the sciences: where students from North Bengal trip up

Bengal has a long tradition of strong Mathematics teaching, and students from state-board schools arrive with excellent algebra and calculus. In AA that is a real head start. The trap is that IB marks reward written justification, and an answer jumped to in the head can lose marks that a full line of working would have earned.

Applications and Interpretation draws on a different set of habits: reading a problem set in context, choosing a statistical test and commenting on the result. Students who find the arithmetic easy often find the commentary harder.

In the sciences the gap is usually in investigation and data analysis. Students know the content but are unused to designing an experiment, handling uncertainty or evaluating a method in the Internal Assessment. Tutors teach those skills through worked examples and then step back, since the work is the student's own.

08

IGCSE Core or Extended: choosing tier and subjects

Core entries stop at grade C, Extended reaches A* and prepares a student for Cambridge A Level or the IB Diploma at Higher Level. A Mathabhanga student with engineering or medicine in mind should normally choose Extended Maths and the separate sciences.

Subject choice should reflect where the student goes after Class 10. A student returning to WBCHSE needs a different mix from one heading to the IB Diploma overseas, and a short planning conversation in Class 9 saves a wasted year.

Students sitting as private candidates register through an authorised centre. For subjects with practical components, either a laboratory is arranged or the alternative-to-practical paper is used, and we train the student for that. IB Gram does not run registration or exams.

09

What does the first month of online tuition look like in Mathabhanga?

The first week is diagnostic. After the free trial, the tutor looks at the student's latest marked paper and school scheme of work and sorts topics into three piles: secure, shaky and missing. A short plan follows.

From week two the lessons settle. A typical hour begins with a quick review of the last homework, moves to one weak topic taught on the shared board, and ends with exam-style questions under mild time pressure. The student works on paper and sends a photograph so that the tutor sees real working.

At the end of the month comes a written review: what has improved, which command words still cause trouble and what the next four weeks should do. Parents in Mathabhanga often appreciate this document because it can be read in the evening and shown to the school.

If the pace feels wrong, say so early. Tutors can change speed, add practice or explain more, and we replace the tutor without charge when the personality does not suit the student.

Where we tutor

Mathabhanga and the towns of Cooch Behar district

Students here live along a handful of roads and rail lines. These are the places we hear from, with the practical points that affect lesson timing.

Mathabhanga town

Market, courts and subdivision offices; families typically want one or two short weekday evenings.

Mansai river bank areas

Low-lying neighbourhoods where the monsoon can affect power and roads; we keep a recorded backup for missed hours.

Cooch Behar

The district headquarters, with the old palace and the Rash Mela; the first place many parents compare schools.

Dinhata

A subdivision town to the east where specialist tutors are hard to find locally.

Tufanganj

A town towards Alipurduar side where relatives often live in other districts and cities.

Sitai and Sitalkuchi side

Border-adjacent villages with variable signal; a second data connection helps.

Haldibari

A railway town on the North Bengal line, home to railway employee families who move cities regularly.

Mekhliganj

A remote subdivision in the north-east; online lessons remove a very long trip for any specialist help.

    Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Mathabhanga: your questions answered

Is there an IB or IGCSE school in Mathabhanga?+

We could not confirm one. Mathabhanga and Cooch Behar district have schools under the West Bengal boards, CBSE and ISC. The nearest cities with confirmed IB or Cambridge schools are Guwahati and Kolkata. If a local school has recently started an international course, let us know.

Will a tutor come to my house in Mathabhanga?+

No. Visits to students' homes happen only in Gurugram and parts of Delhi NCR. In Mathabhanga your child has a private lesson from home, online, with a tutor on live video who uses a shared digital board and sends a short written note afterwards.

How does an online lesson run for a Mathabhanga student?+

The student joins a video call at a fixed weekly hour. The tutor teaches on a shared board, sets questions and marks them live. Use headphones, keep a phone hotspot ready for load-shedding and tell us if the connection is poor so we can adjust timing or format.

What does IB or IGCSE tuition cost in Mathabhanga?+

We quote the rate in writing after the free trial. It depends on level, subject, tutor experience and weekly hours, and there is no public price list. Online lessons save the rent, train fare and travel that a move to Siliguri or Kolkata would involve.

Which IB subjects do North Bengal students ask for most?+

Maths (AA and AI), Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Economics lead, followed by Geography and Business Management. Each is matched to a tutor who has taught that subject and level, never to a general teacher covering everything.

Can a Mathabhanga student take IGCSE as a private candidate?+

Yes, through an authorised exam centre, possibly in another city. Subjects with practicals need a centre with laboratory access or the written alternative paper. We teach content and technique; the centre handles registration and fees, so ask about dates well ahead.

How different is the IB from Madhyamik or Higher Secondary?+

The IB assesses reasoning and communication in English, includes coursework and an essay, and grades against published criteria. West Bengal board exams reward accurate recall from textbooks. Students moving across need practice with command words and extended answers.

    Can lessons run in Bengali?+

Lessons run in English because IB and IGCSE papers are in English, but tutors can clarify a difficult idea simply and build subject vocabulary patiently. Bengali is available as an IB language subject and as IGCSE Bengali as a Second Language.

Do tutors write the Internal Assessment or Extended Essay?+

No. The IB requires that the work be the student's own. Tutors explain the criteria, question the method, comment on drafts and show how to structure an argument. The research, writing and conclusions belong to the student.

When are IB and IGCSE exams held?+

IB Diploma exams run in May and November. Cambridge IGCSE has May-June and October-November sessions, while Pearson Edexcel offers January, May-June and October-November series. The session available to a Mathabhanga candidate depends on the school or exam centre.

How quickly can a trial lesson be arranged?+

Typically inside a week, depending on the subject and tutor availability. Email support@ibgram.com or message +91 7439 368 115 on WhatsApp giving subject, level, exam month and the evenings you can spare.

What equipment does my child need?+

A working laptop or tablet, camera, headphones and a dependable connection, along with paper and pens. Maths and the sciences also need a suitable calculator. Where signal is poor, as in some border-adjacent villages, a second data connection is sensible.

Is it sensible to start IGCSE during Class 9 alongside the state board?+

It can be, but the workload is heavy. Many families begin with Maths and one science, where the overlap with the state syllabus is greatest. A planning call can show whether the extra load fits with school and any tuition already in place.

Is IB Gram affiliated with a school or exam board?+

No. We are independent of the IB, Cambridge, Pearson and every school named here. Tutors are based in India and teach in IST, and every family gets a free trial, written notes and a free tutor change if the match is wrong.

What if my child does not get on with the first tutor?+

Say so, and we will find a different tutor who knows the same course, free of charge. Styles differ, and a quick swap early on saves the student weeks of frustration.
